iThink, therefore iPhone.

On January 9th, 2007, it could be said that good things come to those who wait. The whispered rumors and predictions that for nearly two years languished unfulfilled culminated in a clamorous atmosphere of geek euphoria at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, California. A thin, silver-haired 50-something in his trademark jeans, black turtleneck, and just the slightest hint of a self-aggrandizing (and decidedly well-earned) swagger, took the stage. What followed was the keynote speech that would fundamentally change the way we use mobile devices. When Steve Jobs announced Apple’s newest product, he said it was one that would “reinvent the phone.” Since that day, iPhone has become a household name to smartphone users. The iPhone brings together music, video, photos, internet, gaming, and connectivity in one single device. With just over two years after its first unveiling, Apple has released three versions of the iPhone: the original, the 3G and now the 3GS. The latest model has a faster processor, more memory, an auto-focusing 3 megapixel camera, a digital compass, and the ability to (finally) record video. To say the iPhone’s App Store is a success would be a gigantic understatement. One of the largest additions to the iPhone, the App Store was launched in July of 2008. To date the App Store has over one hundred thousand unique applications available to download. When they say “there’s an app for that” there probably is. iPhone users have downloaded over two million applications for their phones. People use apps to read medical imaging, find a friend’s new house, or laugh out loud (LOL).

01 TWITTELATOR

Website - http://www.stone.com/Twittelator/index.html Here at WINK we love social media and therefore we love twitter. Twitter is a place where you and your friends can post short messages along with pictures or videos. It runs the gamut between personal updating and global reporting. Some folks may share what they had for dinner, others may offer a unique perspective on events like the Iranian elections this past summer. If you don’t think any of your friends “tweet” just start asking around, you might be surprised. Twittelator is the premier twitter application for the iPhone. It allows the user to have the complete twitter experience on the go. Twittelator allows you to post pictures, videos, audio, re-tweet, have subgroups, drafts, offline-tweeting, “automatic send queue,” an auto refresh feature, constant trend updating, log file, stock portfolio, advanced search, and on and on and on!!! For the Twitter user on the go, Twitterlator is an absolute must have.

07 GPS DRIVE Website link- http://news.motionx.com/category/motionx-gps-drive/ One of the best things about the iPhone and the App store is the ability to have a full functioning turn by turn GPS navigation with you at all times. The problem is that most of these programs cost about as much as a stand-alone GPS device. Tom-Tom has an app for the iPhone but it will set you back $99! MotionX is a full featured turn by turn GPS program for a fraction of the cost. It comes with a 30 day trial and after that you can choose a 30 day subscription for $2.99 or one year of navigation for $24.99! I have been using it for the past three weeks and it always has taken me right to my destination. GPS is never perfect, but the MotionX App is just as good as my stand-alone Garmin Nuvi.

NEW YOU RESOLUTIONS

BY KRISTA ANDERSON-DENK

IN A WORLD THAT HAS GOTTEN TOO BUSY, TOO EXPENSIVE, AND TOO DEMANDING, HOW DO YOU FIND A WAY TO KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS AND MAKE THOSE POSITIVE CHANGES WITHOUT BURNING OUT? EVERY NEW YEAR’S MILLIONS OF PEOPLE COMMIT TO MAKING CHANGES IN THEIR LIVES TO BENEFIT THEIR HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND GENERAL LIVES. UNFORTUNATELY, MOST HAVE GIVEN UP ON THOSE SAME RESOLUTIONS BY FEBRUARY. AFTER SPEAKING TO COLUMBIA BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS, I THINK I CAN HELP YOU STREAMLINE YOUR RESOLUTIONS SO THAT YOU CAN STILL BE COMMITTED TO THEM COME NEXT NEW YEARS. THERE ARE TEN COMMON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT ANYONE CAN IDENTIFY - LOSE WEIGHT, GET FIT, SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY, GET ORGANIZED, STOP SMOKING, STOP DRINKING, FIND A NEW JOB, LEARN SOMETHING NEW, VOLUNTEER, GET OUT OF DEBT. I’VE COME UP WITH GROUPINGS OF THOSE RESOLUTIONS AND FOUND WAYS THAT YOU CAN MAKE SIMPLE CHANGES TO YOUR LIFESTYLE AND STILL AFFECT THE CHANGES YOU WANT.

25

NEW YOU RESOLUTIONS Resolution #1 GET FIT · LOSE WEIGHT · LEARN SOMETHING NEW SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY Richland County is rich in low- or no-cost recreation opportunities that families can take advantage of. By finding ways to get out of the house and get your family more active, you can see not only yourself but your entire family become healthier while spending time together. Enjoy our beautiful landscape by taking up hiking or nature walks. Do some research online before hand and print out pictures of local flora and fauna to see how many different species you can identify. If your kids are competitive, turn it into a game to see who can identify the most. Another option is to take up a new sport. If your family has never played racquetball or soccer, research the rules and go over them as a family. Then visit www.richlandcountyrecreation.com to see if you can join in on any of their activities to get started. Northsprings Recreation Center, for example, has racquetball courts that you can reserve and use for only $5 per half hour. You’ll meet other enthusiasts and your family will have fun learning something new. To further your weight loss goals, involve your entire family in meal planning and grocery shopping. Yes, it might take a little longer to get accomplished if everyone is involved, but it will give you a chance to teach them about healthy food choices and preparation.

Resolution #2 GET OUT OF DEBT · LEARN SOMETHING NEW Speak to a financial counselor about building a budget and financial plan that you can live with. The biggest mistake people make in budgeting is creating a plan that is unlivable. Sure, you’ll get out of debt fastest if you live on nothing but Ramen noodles for the next two years, but is that really a plan you’re comfortable with? If you end up giving up on your budget in a few months, you’ll only make your situation worse. There are also many books available written by reputable financial whizzes. Consider picking up Dave Ramsey’s book Financial Peace and learn his strategies for becoming debt-free. Learning a new money management technique will not only help you achieve your New Year’s Resolutions, but will give you a better outlook on the future.

26

Resolution #3 GET ORGANIZED · REDUCE STRESS · GET OUT OF DEBT This probably seems like a pretty natural combination. Being more organized will help you stay on top of your finances which will naturally reduce your stress level. Since a new money management system is in your future, you could probably also include “Learn Something New” in your Resolutions this year! Use these cold winter days and nights to clear out your space. Be sure to get rid of clutter and items that you don’t really need. A cluttered space can be a big stressor. For the items you want to keep, clearly label boxes, envelopes, or any other storage containers and group what you’re keeping in ways that make sense to you (ie. bills, medical records, auto records, family keepsakes, etc.). Once your space is more organized, you’ll be able to find things you need more easily and you’ll feel proud of your progress. Being more organized will also help keep your finances on track, as you’ll be able to locate your paid and unpaid bills, making it easy to tell what is current and what needs to be addressed.

Resolution #4 QUIT SMOKING · LOSE WEIGHT · STOP DRINKING If you’re looking to be healthier in 2010, this probably isn’t the first year you’ve made these resolutions. Most people want to start the year off right and look to make big changes in their health habits. While the traditional approaches such as dieting and exercising are of course always viable, sometimes you need a new option. Frederic Mau of Watermark Hynosis in downtown Columbia took some time to sit down with me recently and discuss his business and how they help people with all three of these goals. He said, “The reason New Year’s Resolutions fail is this - you have some behavior that you know is intellectually bad for you but that is emotionally comforting for you.” Using hypnosis, he can help address the emotional attachment to bad habits, while helping to form positive emotional feelings towards more healthy habits, a process he calls “emotional reframing”. Since 95% of people can be hypnotized, he can “make new behaviors more comfortable”. Of his current weight loss clients, 86% express that they are happy with their success. If you are leery of trying hypnosis, first see what the University of Iowa said when they were conducting a study on stopping smoking. They found that hypnosis was the best method. Watermark also offers a free consultation, so you can meet with Frederic and discuss your plan before making any commitments.

27

NEW YOU RESOLUTIONS Resolution #5 VOLUNTEER · SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY REDUCE STRESS Encouraging your whole family to get involved in volunteer activities will benefit you and your family in many ways. You will be surprised how proud you are of your family’s contribution. Feeling that sense of pride and knowing that you are contributing in a real way towards the betterment of your community will ease your mind and give you a sense of accomplishment. Choose a volunteer activity that the whole family can get behind. If you’re animal lovers, then contact Project Pet and see when you can enroll in their volunteer training. If you like children, look into volunteering at EdVenture Children’s Museum or with Lexington/Saluda County GAL Program for abused and neglected children. If you’d like to help those less fortunate or in need of assistance, see the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. Most local churches also offer volunteer opportunities, so if you are already a member of a church, that is probably a good place to start. Additionally, consider getting your children involved in a youth development program such as 4-H, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Most youth development program include volunteering as part of their community service commitment, in addition to the many other benefits they can bring your children. You may even be able to become a leader and be more involved in their group. If you’d like more ideas, visit www.volunteermatch.com and enter your zip code for a list of organizations looking for volunteers.

Resolution #6 FIND A NEW JOB · GET ORGANIZED Becoming organized and keeping your business information accessible can be key in landing a new job. By organizing and streamlining your work space both at your job and in your home, you can feel confident in being able to find what you need when you need it. Additionally, your current employer will appreciate your effort and may be more willing to give you a good recommendation. If you are currently out of work (like so many Americans), don’t be afraid to get creative in your job hunt. Be sure to compile a list of all the professionals you know if your field and let them know that you’re on the hunt. They can be your best resource for opening positions, especially if they are willing to put in a good word for you. In the mean time, consider some unorthodox job-seeking methods. You could create your own website that highlights your career achievements or write a blog (as long as the blog is on-topic - animal and kid stories are cute, but they probably won’t get you hired). Finally, consider volunteering. It will keep you busy during your down time, and it will give you an opportunity to meet new people. Some volunteer positions can lead to paid positions, and at the very least it will put you in contact with even more people to add to your network. In a few weeks, when you’re ringing in 2010 and planning out the next year, be sure to make your goals attainable and durable. Your time is at a premium, now more than ever, so chose goals that can be acheived while contributing to other goals and your general well-being. Realizing what you are capable of doing and what might push you outside of your comfort-zone can be the difference between giving up and seeing 2010’s Resolutions through to 2011
