We talk a lot about beginnings and endings, in fashion, in stories and in life. And it’s easy to understand why. They are simple to understand, and precise about what’s going on. There’s a satisfying clarity to declaring that while one trend, idea or moment is over, another has just arrived. New starts are exciting and, although reaching the end of something can EH SDLQIXO WKHUH LV DW OHDVW WKH GHÀQLWLYH IXOO VWRS WR OHW XV know where we are. We turn the page and the next chapter is there, waiting for us to dive in. But what about those times that don’t cleave to the narrative in that way? Those fuzzy, indistinct, in-between times that don’t feel like a beginning or an end, though they may hold the seeds of both? It feels like we’ve all been in such a place for almost two years – I can’t be the only one who, in spring 2020, was desperate to know when the pandemic would be ‘over’. But we all know now that, like so much in life, it’s been a case of sudden reversals and a snakes-and-ladders feeling of going right back to the beginning, just when you thought you were at the end. There’s something to be said for the times that come between one thing and another, though. They teach us about the value of patience, about how much we can take from one moment, and how we can always detect the echoes of the past in the future, no matter how far-off they seem. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, you can detect some of that in this issue. On p48, Charmaine Wilkerson explores how her family history reverberated in the present, changing the course of her OLIH $QG RQ S $ELJDLO %HUJVWURP UHÁHFWV RQ WKH YDOXH RI ÁDVK in-the-pan friendships – those people who weren’t there at the beginning, and won’t be there at the end, but cause ripples in our existence nonetheless. In our fashion shoots too, starting on p110, we can see how this season’s designers have taken inspiration from the past to create looks that seem to have been beamed in from the future. And I loved sitting down with our cover star Nicola Coughlan (p98) as and she was also in a period of anticipation, looking forward to Bridgerton series two making its feverishly awaited return to our screens. I’m in my own in-between time, holding the reins at ELLE before our new Editor-in-Chief, Kenya Hunt, joins us in a couple of issues’ time. While I’m doing so, the team and I will keep making a magazine for everyone who knows that sometimes true beauty isn’t what’s past or what’s to come, but in the moments in between.

COOKING NO ONE WOULD GUESS their value. A recipe scribbled in

pencil. A cow-shaped oven glove. A blue-glazed ceramic pie dish. Seemingly innocuous items from the kitchens of my mother and stepmother. My two mothers. The women who took turns raising me in different periods of my childhood in their blended households. My mothers’ upbringings could not have been more different, though sometimes they seemed similar in the telling. Small-town Jamaica versus small-city New England. 3DUHQWV ORVW GUHDPV JLYHQ XS VRPH ZLVKHV IXOÀOOHG %RWK formed families with men from other cultures. Both are gone now, but they live on, in part, through the workaday keepsakes whose value no one would guess. The ceramic dish makes me think of fruit pies, and summer barbecues, and autumn leaf-raking parties amid the burnished red of fallen leaves. The kitschy oven glove with its imitation-quilt cow makes me smile. The mother who gave it to me never liked it, but I did. It had belonged to a beloved

aunt and, by giving it to me, she kept it in the family. The recipe, written on lined notebook paper by my other mother, did more than bring back memories. It eventually stepped off the page and worked its way into the broad landscape of my imagination, inspiring the title of my debut novel, Black Cake. The recipe includes instructions for making a rum-soaked fruitcake, or black cake, as many Caribbeans would call it. When a younger relative texted me to ask for the recipe, I started thinking about inheritance and how we choose to keep some things closer to our hearts than others – especially in a multicultural family like mine. We know that food helps to build connections between people. But people migrate, marriages break up, people remarry, strangers move in together. Food can also play a role in anchoring individuals, families and entire cultures amid change. Sharing a family recipe can carry the same weight as sharing a piece of heirloom jewellery or an ancestral home. E L L E .C OM / U K M A RC H 2022

Writer Charmaine Wilkerson on how a family recipe inspired her debut novel, Black Cake

Elle MEMOIR

Especially if a recipe, a language all its own, is all a person has left to give. In my novel, the traditional Caribbean fruitcake symbolises family bonds and memories in the face of VLJQLÀFDQW ORVV EXW DOVR D PXOWLFXOWXUDO history. Black cake is a descendant of Christmas pudding, but has evolved over time into something unique and more tropical in the blend of its key ingredients. It is the quintessential Caribbean cake for celebrations. It makes me think of holidays and weddings. It is a source of joy. But it is also the offshoot of a less-than-sanguine past. The recipe for black cake serves as a reminder of the ways in which we gloss over the complicated stories behind E L L E .C OM / U K M A RC H 2022

certain foods, from the famed Mediterranean diet (which exalts the tomato that came from South America) to the sometimes-tortuous history of sugar and rum (whose presence in Western diets and economies were propelled, early on, by colonialism and forced labour). In families, too, nostalgia can give way to the kinds of stories that people would prefer not to tell, like my own mothers’ memories of abandonment, miscarriage or the true cause of a loved one’s death. Many families have stories like WKHVH DQG ZKHQ WKH\ ÀQDOO\ HPHUJH WKH\ RIWHQ GR VR LQ WKH kitchen, at the table, over a meal, or with a glass in hand. Sometimes, enough years have gone by that such stories become a source of mirth, like my long-sober uncle’s occasional ‘when I was drinking’ stories. He always had us in stitches. Or, as in the case of the matriarch in Black Cake, some people reveal nothing until after they have gone. My novel is not autobiographical, but the emotional currents that run WKURXJK DQ\ ZRUN RI ÀFWLRQ RIWHQ OLQN EDFN WR UHDO OLIH emotions we have experienced, or heard about, or read of. I have no recollection of my mother and father living together before their divorce. I only recall them arguing later, over longdistance telephone lines, year after year. But I almost always remember my stepparents being part of my life. It is part of my shape-shifting sense of family and home. Together, the two couples who called themselves my parents formed a loose clan of ruptures and alliances. Together, and despite everything, they were part of a greater, though somewhat bruised, whole. Those old kitchen items aren’t the only things I’ve inherited from my parents. But it may very well be their domestic, ordinary nature that has wedged them so solidly into my emotional genome. They keep me anchored to a sense of having come from somewhere and belonged to someone. One’s sense of family and home may shift over time, but it remains embedded in our hearts and our sense of self wherever we go. Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson is out now

These are serious times, but somehow that makes us more ready than ever to have a smile put on our faces. Fortunately, these women are here to do just that. On television, Nicôle Lecky brings her acclaimed one-woman-play Mood to BBC Three. Told in part through songs, Lecky plays 25-year-old wannabe singer and rapper Sasha, who dreams of becoming a major recording artist. She falls into sex work to make ends meet, but it’s as funny as it is profound. Plus, comedian Rose Matafeo’s Starstruck returns for a second series. Having decided WR SXUVXH D UHODWLRQVKLS ZLWK ÀOP VWDU 7RP -HVVLH PXVW GHDO ZLWK the real-world consequences of her grand gesture. On the big screen, The Lost City (out 25 March) sees Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum team up for a hilarious jungle adventure. Think Robert Zemeckis’ classic Romancing the Stone, as a reclusive romance novelist gets swept up in a kidnapping while on a book tour with her cover model. Feel good and fun, guaranteed.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that designer Lauren Perrin went from MEET THE DESIGNER MAKING HOSIERY HAUTE niche to need-to-know. Maybe it was when The Crown star Emma Corrin wore a pair of button-covered tights for her W magazine shoot. Or perhaps when Harry Styles wore not one but two pairs of her gloves? Or was it when Alva Claire wore Perrin’s 1970s wallpaper-inspired tights and gloves for her ELLE UK cover shoot in July last year? Whenever it happened, the 26-year-old has well and truly arrived. After growing up in Biarritz in France, and a three-year stint in Paris studying menswear, Perrin moved to London. Without speaking a word of English, she started working as a styling assistant, and it was during her time on sets that she came up with the idea for her business. ‘I saw what stylists really wanted all the time – funny tights and funny gloves.’ 6HHLQJ D JDS LQ WKH PDUNHW DQG ZDQWLQJ WR IXOÀO KHU RZQ FUHDWLYH DPELWLRQV 3HUULQ LQYHVWHG DOO KHU VDYLQJV LQWR KHU ÁHGJOLQJ EXVLQHVV hand-making bold hosiery for stylists. ‘At the beginning, I sent the samples to people I worked with, which was a bit awkward,’ she says. But her instincts were right, and she is now stocked by boutiques Ssense and 50m. ‘I hoped it would take longer for tights and gloves to get trendy so I’d have more time to prepare,’ she says, laughing. Made with a strong, soft jersey with high-stretch, the pieces are durable and comfortable – but what makes them stand out are the patterns. Many incorporate 1970s-inducing shades of browns, yellows and reds. ‘The inspiration was Bridget Riley’s Op Art,’ says Perrin. ‘She’s amazing.’ While growing the business is vital, Perrin insists she’ll make all her pieces in the UK, ensuring they are affordable and produced sustainably. ‘As it stands, you can create tights from recycled materials, but you can’t print on them. But my factory recently said they might be able to make this happen – I’ve ordered some prototypes in recycled nylon. I’m hopeful.’ Next, Perrin plans to expand. ‘I already have a cocktail dress, a skirt and a few tops – it’s between a couture and ready-to-wear collection.’ If her current trajectory is anything to go by, expect to see her expanded range everywhere – and soon.

FRIENDS? Long-term friendships enrich our lives, but what about the ones that blaze bright, then fizzle out? As Abigail Bergstrom contemplates the end of such a relationship, she finds joy in transience

Photography WE ARE THE RHOADS

Elle READS

A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE LEFT MY LIFE RECENTLY. She hasn’t died or anything,

she just doesn’t want to be friends anymore. I can’t say why for sure. Perhaps lockdowns pushed us apart, or we outgrew one another – or maybe the friendship was exactly how it was meant to be: intense and inevitably WUDQVLHQW $V WKH DQFLHQW &KLQHVH SKLORVRSKHU /DR 7]X ZURWH ¶7KH ÁDPH WKDW EXUQV WZLFH DV EULJKW EXUQV KDOI DV ORQJ · $P\ DQG , VXUH ZHUH RQ ÀUH 7KLV IULHQGVKLS ÁLQJ ZDV DQ XQULYDOOHG FRFNWDLO RI DGUHQDOLQH ZH SROLVKHG one another’s sentences as we discussed the book we’d just read, laced with dopamine hits of frantically messaging back and forth late into the night, and ÀQLVKHG ZLWK D NLFN RI R[\WRFLQ ZKHQ VKH·G VKRZ XS DW P\ SODFH WRWH EDJ ÀOOHG ZLWK JURFHULHV LQVLVWLQJ VKH FRRN PH SDVWD DIWHU D SDUWLFXODUO\ WRXJK day. But on some level, perhaps I always knew the relationship would be – OLNH PDQ\ WKLQJV LQ OLIH ² ÁHHWLQJ <HW LW·V OHIW PH IHHOLQJ VWXQJ Julia Samuel is a leading psychotherapist and author who focuses a lot of her work on change and transience. Her forthcoming book is called Every Family has a Story: How we Inherit Love and Loss. She tells me, ‘There is a lot of pain, sorrow and distress from female friendships that come to an end.’ She suggests this links directly to narratives constructed by the media and the way it’s projected on screens. ‘The culture is informed by TV shows DQG ÀOPV ZKHUH D JURXS RI ZRPHQ DUH DPD]LQJO\ FORVH WKH\ VXSSRUW HDFK other through all life’s phases and they have all the fun. But of course, where you have people, you have complexity.’ Dr Sophie Mort, clinical psychologist and bestselling author of A Manual for Being Human, says these narratives speak to ‘they lived happily ever after’ scripts: ‘Think of the lobsters and the penguins of the world who mate for life, and the elderly couple, who were childhood sweethearts, holding hands – they have been the poster children for romance. The romantic notion of permanence is what most of us grew up with and is the idea many of us believe we should strive for. These ideas come from society. They shape what we think we need, but in reality transience is not a bad thing.’ The reality is that we have different types of friendships with different types of women in different times of our lives. But if longevity is most prized in platonic relationships, then anything other than a decade’s worth of nights out, late-night phone calls, in-jokes, drunken confessions and expensive city breaks seems, well, pointless. My short-lived intense time with Amy taught me that passing friendships should be celebrated for what they are, rather than seen as some kind of IDLOXUH ZKHQ WKH\ À]]OH RXW 7KHVH DUH WKH IULHQGV you make when you become a new parent and want to latch on to an NCT mum who will also moan DERXW WKHLU EDE\ DQG WKHLU VHOÀVK UHVLVWDQFH WR VOHHS or that colleague who has learnt to monitor the subtle ÁXFWXDWLRQV RI \RXU PRRG DQG NQRZV H[DFWO\ ZKHQ \RX QHHG D .LW.DW RU SHUKDSV LW·V WKH ZRPDQ \RX PHW RQ DQ ,QWHQVLYH 6SDQLVK HYHQLQJ FRXUVH ZLWK ZKRP \RX ÀQG \RXUVHOI drinking red wine late into the evening and planning a month in Madrid together that you both know is never really going to happen. These relationships can get deep, niche or codependent very quickly. There’s an inbuilt unsustainability to them – but isn’t that part of the charm? The French poet Charles Baudelaire wrote, ‘Modernity is the transient, WKH ÁHHWLQJ WKH FRQWLQJHQW LW LV RQH KDOI RI DUW WKH RWKHU EHLQJ WKH HWHUQDO and the immovable.’ If we embrace them, transient friendships are an important half of our social lives. But this is easier said than done because,

“There’s an INBUILT unsustainability to these relationships – but isn’t that part of the charm?”

as we opened another bottle of red, laughing at Holly’s latest escapade, like the dog she’d rescued that day using her dressing-gown belt. And yet, when I moved out, it came to a natural end and none of us had any expectations for it to continue. ‘I don’t think I ever really thought about how long the friendship was going to last, but you never really do, I suppose. It moved on naturally, because you moved out. I think the relationship would’ve been a completely different one if we weren’t living next door to each other.’ Rebecca is very positive about transient friendships. She says, ‘I think we should be more accepting. Things can be perfect for a certain time and then it’s healthy to let go.’ I seek out more women who’ve had positive experiences of temporary friendships and I stumble across Margot, a 40-year-old graphic designer, at a party. She says, ‘Over lockdown, my neighbourhood WhatsApp group became a real lifeline. Someone I’d never met before asked the group if anyone could print something for them and I offered. As soon as I opened the door to this person, I felt the thrill of a connection. Immediately, I realised he was a fabulous individual who worked in fashion and, having been starved of seeing my friends for so long, we ended up having a meaningful conversation on my doorstep. We would go for weekly walks – I am almost twice his age, but it didn’t matter – and we shared our life stories. It felt like I was E L L E .C OM / U K M A RC H 2022

reminding myself of who I was when we spoke. ‘Once the world opened up again, our walks stopped and we rarely messaged. We still live opposite each other and pass each other in the street with a quick hello. We served a purpose for each other at the time and there is an unspoken agreement that neither of us need that kind of intimate relationship now we can connect with our real friends again.’ Julia Samuel says, ‘We know from UHVHDUFK WKDW HYHQ D ÀYH PLQXWH FKDW ZLWK the person you buy your coffee from can be an important connection. A relationship that lasts a number of days, weeks or months can be meaningful and feed your sense of self and your sense of belonging, as well as expanding and changing your view. Longevity isn’t the be all and end all.’ Throughout my adult life, I’ve shared PDQ\ VLJQLÀFDQW PRPHQWV ZLWK SHRSOH who ended up being minor characters: FROOHDJXHV ZKR ZHUH P\ FORVHVW FRQÀGDQWHV wrapping arms tightly around me as I grieved; ZRPHQ LQ ÁDWVKDUHV ZKR NQHZ HYHU\ intimate detail about my sex life and now probably couldn’t remember my middle name. I’ve been giving these connections the back bench, treating them as substitute players who were just warming the seats for the real thing, but I’ve been wrong about them, restricting myself from accepting the real depth of that encounter and what it offered, because it eventually ended. Dr Mort tells me that some humans deal in transience more than others, but ‘these sorts of relationships can be profound, even life-changing. The ending of the connection does not negate the importance of it. We hate to admit it, but it’s true. When we are able to recognise that almost everything is transient, we can appreciate each moment in our life for what it actually is. We can enjoy the bloom of each temporary bud and be delighted should someone stick around longer than we expected.’ I think about reaching out to Amy, but in the end I don’t, because our ending is simple. Not everyone is meant to stay in our lives forever and this doesn’t degrade the friendship, LWV UHOHYDQFH RU LWV VLJQLÀFDQFH 6RPHWLPHV VSHFLDO SHRSOH are only meant to have cameo roles, so instead it’s time to bed in with the most loyal and steadfast chum of all: I choose to befriend transience. Floating in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Item number three: open one of the most acclaimed hotels of the decade. Within four months, she had succeeded on all fronts. This should give you some idea about exactly who Marie-Louise Sciò is. If you look beyond the warm smile, and the old The Rolling Stones T-shirt she wears to our interview (admittedly beneath a much-loved orange Gabriela Hearst jumper), this is an individual who makes magic happen. Although you may not know her name, you will almost certainly be familiar with her brand of sorcery. If you’ve ever wondered why stripey towels felt like the must-have accessory of last summer, or why Ischia suddenly seemed like the hottest place to be, then you can thank this 44-year-old Italian. On paper, she is a hotelier, overseeing the Pellicano Group of hotels, which include Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole, La Posta Vecchia in Ladispoli and The Mezzatorre in Ischia. Then he sort of left it.’ Il Pellicano had always attracted a beautiful crowd: models, movie producers, as well as some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Charlie Chaplin. The family would spend summers at the hotel, where Sciò remembers watching scenes of unadulterated glamour from the wings. ‘It was very much a grown-up’s world, so I saw the whole thing from behind a rosemary bush. I was sneaking out in my pyjamas at night. On Friday evenings, there would be a gala around the pool, with candles everywhere and a band.’ E L L E .C OM / U K M A RC H 2022

By the early 2000s, Sciò had graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied architecture, and did a stint working in real estate and interior design. When her father asked her to try her hand at redoing one of the rooms at Il Pellicano, she reluctantly agreed. ‘I did a bathroom, then, I suggested the whole place needed some freshening up.’ He asked her to take on the job. I knew the essence of the place, and I knew I wanted to protect it.’ Sciò also knew Slim Aarons, the lauded US photographer who chronicled the immaculate lives of the jet set in the late 20th century. She remembers him staying in Il Pellicano when she was a child, snapping away from the sidelines. ‘I was a little girl, around eight years old, and I remember him running around and having dinner with my father and he used to pay my dad in cameras. He came every year because it was the place in the 1980s. So, I got his number from my dad and I called him and told him I needed to remember what it was like. He told me he had sold his archive to Getty. So, I went to London and I found boxes and boxes of his images of Il Pellicano.’ PARADISE FOUND LEFT: THE DELUXE SUITE BATHROOM AT HOTEL IL PELLICANO. BODY and soul Yes, sex sells, but the SS22 runways offered up something far more subtle By MARLOWE GRANADOS WHEN OSCAR ISAAC KISSED HIS WAY UP Jessica Chastain’s arm

at the Venice Film Festival in September 2021, he awakened a sea of starved onlookers. Those few seconds on the red carpet roused the public’s thirst, and they now knew what they’d been missing. The moment tapped into a larger conversation about the dearth of true sensuality in popular media – you’d be hard-pressed to come up with anything from the last few decades that resounds with a true sensual nature. ignites the senses. When I look to my closet for answers, the one piece that stands out is a vintage DVF wrap dress. Simple in its shape and made of slinky silk-jersey, its legacy is owed to the effortless way it gently holds the body’s curves. Whenever I wear it, I feel attuned to my form. With no zippers or buttons, there’s a freedom to it that gives me the ability to be bold or gregarious in the face of whatever the night holds. Then there is the simple knot at the waist that ties the dress together, that with one pull could unravel the whole thing. That is what sensuality is. It should invite the imagination – suggest what could happen. For spring/summer 2022, designers were keen to bring that vibrant pulse back. There were hints of the body everywhere at Prada, from the boned waists of the dresses to the tails of miniskirts billowing out behind the models, mimicking the movement of their hips. The most effectively seductive pieces in the collection were sweaters with the outline of the breasts built in, reminding us of what it feels like to wear knits over bare skin on a cool day. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’ show notes referenced the tension between the clothes and their wearer, pointing out that ‘their architecture is inherently tied to the body, and therefore to seduction’. Jonathan Anderson experimented with draping at Loewe, citing Renaissance painter Pontormo as inspiration. There were dresses held up by the smallest strap that looked like no machine had passed through the fabric for something as crude

as a seam – they appeared, instead, as though they’d landed on the body by divine chance. The dance of push and pull was present in the translucent breastplates of his closing looks, offering cheeky nudity offset by a high neck and cape-like sleeves that transformed the pieces into sophisticated objects, analogous to sculpture (the most intimate of mediums, as it has so much to do with touch). And at Versace, the foulard safety pin held together dresses and jackets, all at risk of coming undone. As we’re all overwhelmed with an excess of information, it’s natural that our heads turn for only the most outrageous and salacious things. Over time and through overexposure, this numbs our senses. ‘Ostentation is not the way to maximise sex appeal or humour or even entertainment. We’ve forgotten about the way clothing feels on our body, the practicality, the personal touches,’ 6KDKLGL VD\V 7KH ÀQHU GLVWLQFWLRQV are often what make life worth living ² DQG GHÀQLWHO\ ZKDW PDNH ZHDULQJ clothes so pleasurable. When we are used to everything being served on a platter, we lose our curiosity. Our culture is focused only on what is revealed, when all the intrigue is in what’s hiding. The spring/summer collections were an exercise in reinvigorating our nuanced senses. And fashion lovers are ready. Liane Wiggins, head of womenswear at Matchesfashion, notes that we saw designers ‘understanding that people want to be in touch with themselves and feel joy once again’. After all, we must get dressed to undress. Why not take our time?

‘Being famous is like being a dog on the Tube,’ she says. ‘It’s exactly the same energy. When you get on, everyone looks at you. Some people are so smiley, while some are afraid of you and don’t want to go near. Some people touch you without asking. And I remember one time I was taking my Invisalign [brace] out, and this person was staring me right in the eyes, which was quite weird. But, honestly, most people are so, so lovely.’ If that seems like an almost ludicrously well-balanced answer for someone who has gone from relative obscurity to sky-high recognisability, with a short-pit stop at medium-sized British sitcom levels of fame, that seems to be how Coughlan rolls. At 34, she’s older than the characters she plays, has experience of ups and downs, including a period working part-time in an optician back at home in Galway while still trying to make it as an actor and, probably most importantly, knows why she does the job she does. ‘I do think it feels like real-life magic,’ she says. ‘I used to be obsessed with The Wizard of Oz. You can see why she attracts people – why she’s DM buddies with Kim Kardashian, and how she achieved what so many of us dream of: becoming actual best friends with Jonathan Van Ness. ‘Queer Eye had just come out and I had a hoodie made with his face on it,’ she says. ‘I put it on Instagram, and he saw it and sent me a message. Even then, he was still working in a salon in LA and they didn’t know [if the show was going to be a success]. He said that seeing someone on the other side of the world with his face on something made it feel real. And then we met up in New York in 2018 and just hit it off. We’re very similar. We exist on the same plane.’ As a good person who likes good people, it’s not surprising that Coughlan’s plans for the future focus most on good experiences. ‘I just want to work with people who are considerate and open and just love what they do and want to make great things,’ she says. ‘I have an allergy to GLIÀFXOW SHRSOH ,·YH OLWHUDOO\ KDG VWUHVV UDVK IURP WKHP %XW I think a lot of it comes from real toxic masculinity. “Being famous is like being a dog on the TUBE. It’s the same ENERGY, everyone looks at you” And that feeling is clearly still in her. ‘On set there’s the moment when they call for quiet just before rolling. And everyone there is silent. There’s something about that I just love. And then on Bridgerton, walking into a ballroom, with hundreds of extras, all in custom-made clothes and the wigs and hair, it does feel like being transported back in time. It gives me joy, genuinely. ‘Whenever people say they want to get into this industry, I’m like, you’ve got to want it so badly. Because if you don’t, you’d be mad to do it, absolutely mad. She’s more than ready for things to change: ‘I think television – not just television, the world – has been so male-centric for so long. And, like with anything, we just want something refreshing and new – let’s just try that. But I get so much of, “Oh, my wife likes that.”’ But 82 million people is an awful lot of wives, and Bridgerton, with its centring of female pleasure and perspective, is certainly not old-school. id farewell to the scraped-back ponytail, wave goodbye to grown-out braids and leave the messy buns at home, because SS22 just took ‘done’ hair and turned it up to 11. Look to Moschino, where Mars Attacks!-esque bouffants and beehives dominated backstage; Giambattista Valli, where exuberant, OTT ribbons reigned; and Versace, which hailed the return of XXL poker-straight lengths. Taking the situation to new heights (quite literally) was Emilia Wickstead, where gravity-defying cylinders and hovering doughnut buns summed up the hair mantra of the season: loud, proud and seriously sculptural. If you’re looking for ‘I woke up like this’ nonchalance, keep moving. It’s time to make some shapes. ‘Go big! If clothes can be geometric, why can’t your hair be geometric, too?’ says pro hairstylist, industry trendsetter and Dyson global ambassador Larry King. No stranger to hair that’s bigger, bolder and better, King is all about the new season’s larger-than-life looks. ‘It’s about making a statement – from \RXU KDLU WR WKH FORWKHV \RX·UH ZHDULQJ ² EHLQJ FRQÀGHQW EHLQJ out-there, being more individual and embracing all of that. ,W·V DERXW ZHDULQJ \RXU KDLU WR WKH PD[LPXP DQG IXOÀOOLQJ its potential,’ he says. So if there was ever a moment for an avant-garde hair reinvention, it’s now. Here, King’s interpretation of SS22’s architectural swerves and curves were a matter of smoothing, sculpting, pinning, plaiting and, in a few cases, carving, his way to hair art. Think a cubist take on the classic backcomb, a ceiling-skimming bowl cut, bundles of blunt-cut braids and a quiff so oversized Gwen Stefani could never. The message? Go big, or go home.

AMAZING GRACE AN ODE TO THE ONE AND ONLY GRACE JONES: LARRY BRINGS THE BUZZ CUT INTO 2022 WITH A CLEVER SPIN ON THE FLAT TOP. ‘FROM THE FRONT IT LOOKS LIKE A CUT, BUT IT’S AN ILLUSION,’ SAYS LARRY. ‘I PINNED THE HAIR INTO A BUN AT THE BACK AND SHAPED THE REST INTO A FAUX FLAT TOP USING THE DYSON SUPERSONIC HAIR DRYER’S STYLING CONCENTRATOR, £30, TO GET THAT REAL TIGHTNESS AND DEFINITION IN THE SIDES.’ ZERO COMMITMENT, MAXIMUM REWARD.

THE DIRECTORS’ CUT

TikTok trends Two beauty journalists, two very different approaches. ELLE’s beauty directors George Driver and Jennifer George give us the lowdown

THE TREND HOPPER George Driver

Cynics may argue that I’m too old to be trawling through TikTok videos for beauty tips from teenagers, but, among the make-up madness, every now and then there’s a new tip or product that’s genuinely useful. I promise! Jenn is totally on the money when it comes to 99 per cent of ‘tutorials’ being, at best, blatantly photoshopped and, at worst, dangerous, but scroll for long HQRXJK DQG \RX·OO ÀQG WKH RGG JHP RI JHQLXV While I won’t be applying my foundation with a jade roller, I’ll happily go to TikTok for blusher techniques. Past me might have suggested the classic ‘apple of the cheek’ application. Now? I’m all about the ‘higher the better’ TikTok method – dab it on the tops of your cheekbones and up to your temples. The look is all lift, lift and more lift. Having spent hours on the app, I’m now convinced my blusher, bronzer and highlighter all need to be applied up to my eyebrows – brows that are currently feathered to the gods, by the way, thanks to the platform’s new hype product, got2b’s brow wand, which glues hair in any way you please. The demand for TikTok content to be attentiongrabbing means that the simple-but-good can be overlooked, EXW ÀOWHU RXW WKH LQWHQWLRQDO H\H EDJV DQG OLS ZLQJV DQG LW·V there. When Dr Jart+ launched its Cicapair cream, rosacea sufferers everywhere (including me) rejoiced. Based on sound colour-correcting logic and skin-soothing tiger grass, it really works. It’s laughable that I’m writing about TikTok considering I don’t have a particularly active account. I do, however, occasionally take a nosy glance at the app to see what the ¶NLGV· DW PRVW LQÁXHQFHUV FRXOG actually be my children) are up to when it comes to make-up. There’s no denying the impact of this platform. Even if you’ve never downloaded it, you can bet that the brands you love have – and are watching it closely. However, due to my age or scepticism, I’ve come to the conclusion that most of the trends are trash. The burnt tip of an almond is being used as an eye-liner and fake tan as FRQWRXU $Q LQÁXHQFHU ZDV KRVSLWDOLVHG IROORZLQJ D ¶',< freckle’ trick that involved a needle and ink. And forgive me for shouting, but lube is being used as a primer?! In case you haven’t guessed, I’m not down for a ‘hack’. I’m here for easy application and saving money, sure, but today’s products are so good, so clever, that most TikTok tricks are unnecessary click-bait. But what I do enjoy are the snippet-length product UHYLHZV 5HYLHZV RI PDNH XS WKDW DUWLVWV LQÁXHQFHUV DQG high-street-shopping beauty fans are genuinely loving; that go ‘viral’ because they do what they say on the tin so well. The sweetest smell of ALL A new wave of subtle yet evocative fragrances aims to emulate the intimate warmth of human skin

Elle BEAUTY WE ALL HAVE A UNIQUE SCENT – that natural cocktail made up

of our body chemistry mixed with the products we use on our skin, hair, laundry and more. It’s the subtle but distinctively ‘you’ smell left behind on a T-shirt, or on your bed sheets. If you think RI D WUDGLWLRQDO IUDJUDQFH DV \RXU ¶RXWÀW· WKHQ D SHUVRQDO VFHQW LV more like lingerie: detectable only during intimate contact. To catch a whiff, you must come near. Recognising the potential appeal of bottling a scent so inherently alluring, beauty brands have begun experimenting with fragrances that either attempt to mimic the natural smell of human skin or use ingredients that take your individual elixir and amplify it. The result: a burgeoning category of eau de parfums and toilettes referred to as ‘skin scents’. Not unlike a tinted moisturiser or lip balm, or a styling product that plays up your hair’s natural texture, these understated fragrances aim to make the most of what you have naturally. Most skin scents are soft, lightweight formulas that cling close to the body, similar to how our own natural aromas behave. Tania Sanchez, co-author of Perfumes: The A-Z Guide, describes them as something, ‘light enough for people to think of not as perfumes – separate entities travelling along with you – but as somehow part of you, emanating from you… I suspect most rely heavily on slow, dry-down materials like musks, woods and ambers and less on very IRUZDUG LGHQWLÀDEOH PDWHULDOV OLNH EHUU\ QRWHV KHDY\ ÁRUDOV RU JUDSHIUXLW · Skin scents are also typically gender-neutral, and most could be described as warm, inviting, sexy (but not heavy) and clean (but not sterile). Some fragrance experts suggest one reason skin scents are currently so appealing is because they pay homage to intimacy, something many of us lacked thanks to social distancing. ‘[The pandemic] put restrictions on being with other people and limited our ability to get very close to someone,’ says Dr Rachel Herz, a neuroscientist and an expert in the psychological science of smell. ‘So getting this secret hint of somebody’s presence provides an added layer of intimacy that has a psychologically meaningful dimension at

this particular time. People are emerging from deep social isolation and want to connect emotionally, socially and intimately. Skin scents can help give us all those things.’ How can a perfumer conjure something so personal? Some blends, such as Glossier’s You, £45 for 50ml EDP, or Le Labo’s AnOther 13, £141 for 50ml EDP, include notes like musk and pink pepper, which infuses the scent with a soft spiciness that’s surprisingly similar to the smell of human skin. Other skin scents XWLOLVH ÁRUDOV EXW WKH\ GR LW LQ D VXEWOHU ZD\ WKDQ \RX·G ÀQG LQ traditional fragrances. By/Rosie Jane’s Rosie, £42.50 for 50ml EDP, uses just a whispery hint of rose to give the fragrance a velvety plushness suggestive of warm, damp skin, while Glossier’s You complements its piquant pink pepper note with just a touch of iris to make the blend a bit cosier. The secret weapon in a skin scent like Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules, £72 for 100ml EDT, is an ingredient called Iso E Super, which PDJQLÀHV RWKHU QRWHV $ORQH ,VR ( 6XSHU smells slightly woody and is almost imperceptible. But spray it on bare skin and suddenly it can intensify your own natural scent. ‘We discovered that Iso E Super, the only [perfume note] ingredient in Molecule 01, creates an individual aura for each person who wears it,’ says Geza Schoen, master perfumer and founder of Escentric Molecules. Schoen suggests it was this unique characteristic that helped Molecule 01 become one of the brand’s best-sellers, as many people have been craving an opportunity WR H[SUHVV WKHLU LQGLYLGXDOLW\ DV ZHOO DV ÀQG D IUDJUDQFH WKDW·V DQ alternative to mass-market, generic scents. 6NLQ VFHQWV FDQ DOVR EH GHHSO\ VH[\ 6HFUHWLRQV 0DJQLÀTXHV by Etat Libre d’Orange, £85 for 50ml EDP, uses aldehydic notes (also a key component of Chanel N°5, which is responsible for the classic scent’s soapy, clean characteristic), mixed with musk and sandalwood, and marine ingredients such as salty seaweed. The effect is erotic and bold, but not overpowering. And the thing that links all skin scents? They’re best smelled up close.

Make friends with your SKIN Do you and your complexion need counselling? We’re here to help. No need to break up – just stop those breakouts

We live with it every day of our lives. We scrutinise it, insult it and can be fairly irresponsible in how we treat it. And often it will have a freak-out on us at the worst possible time. Is it any wonder that we aren’t always on the best of terms with our skin? Over the pandemic-addled months, we were parted from facialists, skin doctors, cosmetic counters and anyone else who may help our skin feel calm, happy and well-balanced. We threw a barrage of seemingly helpful cures at it, making time for weekly seven-step sessions and using every tool in the beauty box. But was it too much? Overloading our skin with new regimes and products, and following bad advice, can be a major source of irritation, but genetics and hormones also play a big part in the way it behaves. Meanwhile, stress, diet and pollution all play a role in exacerbating skin issues – so until someone devises psychotherapy for our skin, here are some easy ways to work on the relationship, whatever the issue.

Peel away the debris

Using a ‘skin-stripping’ peel to reset your skin may sound counterintuitive, but bear with us. Because, although the term suggests something sinister, a peel shouldn’t leave you red raw and exposed at all. Used correctly, it will remove debris, renew the surface, and reveal a glow. They can feel potent, but not painful – an important difference. ‘As they start working and causing SRVLWLYH LQÁDPPDWLRQ LW·V QRUPDO WR IHHO D WLQJOLQJ sensation and see some pinkness appear,’ says Paterson, ‘but if things get itchy, or burning, it’s best to err on the side of caution and remove the product straight away.’ Stronger at-home options often come with a ‘neutralising agent’ to calm and replenish the skin straight away. The results? ‘An instant and ongoing glow,’ says Paterson, who adds that with regular use they can also help to smooth scarring, blur pigmentation, and reduce wrinkles.

Sense at Rosewood Villa Magna MADRID

LOCATION In the snazzy Salamanca district of

Madrid (Louis Vuitton is tucked behind the hotel; Gucci next door), the newly refurbished Rosewood outpost is a polished and preened rebirth of this 1970s building. Although central in the city, the site has an oasis feel to it, with towering 30-metrehigh cedar trees in leafy grounds. True relaxation really starts, however, when you enter the venue’s recently built spa. THE CONCEPT This is not your clinical, stark white, austere kind of spa. Dark wood walls and Turkish marble cocoon you, and holistic wellness lurks around every neutral-toned corner. An authentic hammam takes central stage – a homage to Madrid’s Muslim past and a place to ‘purify the body and calm the mind’ with Moroccan rituals and orange-blossom-water-scented remedies. UNIQUE FEATURE One of the spa’s star offerings takes place mostly outside. The ‘El Retiro Journey’ – designed to reset, revive and reground – is a guided walk through the city’s historic park, topped off with a ‘foot-washing ritual’, and leg and foot massage. TREATMENT TO TRY You might think bay leaves are best for a slow-cooked ragu, but here they’ve inspired a signature treatment, the Bay Leaf Ritual, which utilises the indigenous plant and it’s wellness properties (it’s rich in Vitamins A and C, and detoxifying magnesium). The leaf is incorporated into an array of multisensory aspects, including a bay-infused foot soak, body scrub, massage and detoxifying tea. rosewoodhotels.com

Jonq-Jin Kuo Founder of Vivvant London Enchanté Communication - Taiwan

“It’s a gentleman’s world. Vivvant, the shoe brand everybody should be talking about” Inspired by the quintessentially British gentleman, Jonq-Jin Kuo swapped numbers out for a degree in Fashion Marketing and the tropical temperature of Taipei for the rainy streets of London. After gaining experience behind the scenes, working for Tom Ford at Selfridges, Jin took his knowledge to the streets and quickly gained notoriety with his successful fashion blog in mandarin. With one door closing - his fashion blog - another opened, leading to an exclusive book deal to publish ‘Just Like A Londoner’, a guide to achieve the stylish London-look, classic yet modern. After observing, altering, and teaching men how to dress, it was time to give them the basics to do it with and so, Vivvant was born. Moving to London was not as much of a culture shock, as it was a vestimentary one. London is known for its clash of historical and state-of-the-art architecture. Jin observed this juxtaposition EHWZHHQ ROG DQG QHZ DQG VDZ KRZ WKLV ZDV UHÀHFWHG LQ KRZ WKH way Londoner’s dress. “It’s wonderful and it became my muse,” says Founder Jin. “People in Taipei mainly dress for comfort, it’s hot and humid so somebody wearing a suit for pleasure, not for work, is something you barely see. It seemed like a whole new ZRUOG , VDZ VXLWV LQ VR PDQ\ GL൵HUHQW VW\OHV DQG IDEULFV HDFK SDLUHG ZLWK D GL൵HUHQW NLQG RI VKRHV RU ERRWV ,W ZDV VRPHWKLQJ I had never seen before, was completely fascinated by and desperately wanted to completely immerse myself in,” says Jin. Vivvant translates to living, shoes are meant to be worn and lived in. They stand for comfort, style and impeccable quality. “Originally, I wanted to open a tailoring shop, but from a practical point of view, this didn’t make much sense as a novice in the industry.”says Jin.

2. Brion Brown Patina Chelsea Boots

Luckily Jin’s love for suits was matched with his love for footwear. “No matter where in the world you go, men do and will keep buying GL൵HUHQW VW\OHV RI VKRHV QR PDWWHU WKHLU MRE IDVKLRQ VHQVH RU MRXUQH\ in life. We want Vivvant to be right there with them.” says Jin. “You have to pour all your passion into a project, otherwise, it’s not sustainable. Whenever I doubt myself or start overthinking, I tend to hold on to one of my proudest moments, which was the ¿UVW WLPH VRPHERG\ DVNHG PH ZKHUH , ERXJKW WKH VKRHV , ZDV wearing. It’s little moments like these, that keep me grounded and inspire me to keep pushing Vivvant forward,” adds the Founder Jin. For Vivvant, style is synonymous with quality, to ensure the shoes are produced to the highest grade of craftsmanship, they work with a small family-run business in the epicentre of leather goods: Italy. “Choosing the right shoemaker was one of the most tedious tasks, after visiting many places across Portugal, Spain and Italy, I found a highly-skilled family-run business in Florence. I’m very proud that as a young brand our shoes are enlaced with years of experience, says Jin” Vivvant creates shoes for any occasion, however, this doesn’t mean one shoe all occasions. “We currently sell four styles of boots and one trainer; these can all easily be dressed up or down. For LQVWDQFH E\ DGGLQJ UXEEHU VROHV WR ERRWV WKHVH FDQ HDVLO\ ¿W ZLWK both jeans and suits, making them versatile while ensuring you’re still dressed immaculately,” says Jin. 4. Alexis Blue Patina Jodhpur Boots

When designing - or looking for - the perfect shoes, Jin, tells us we need to look for a balance between comfort and beauty, and WR QHYHU VDFUL¿FH RQH RU WKH RWKHU ³)URP DQ DHVWKHWLF SRLQW RI view, there is no right or wrong but when you look at the quality, WKDW¶V ZKHUH \RX FDQ WHOO WKH GL൵HUHQFH DQG WKDW¶V ZKHUH D WUXH VKRH faux-pas lays. You can have the nicest design, but if the quality of leather or vegan leather is subpar, the entire shoe is ruined.” As for the future, Vivvant will be expanding its market East, introducing the classic gentleman design to an Asian clientele. His home audience in the UK can expect to see more styles of shoes hitting the racks as well as camera bags, the perfect accessory for any Londoner, and far beyond. Vivvant proves to be the British answer to the Italian craftsmanship and luxury of Cuccinelli, and we can wait to step in his shoes. My fashionable life

BELLA FREUD

The iconic British designer on the style lessons she learnt from her father and why fashion is always political

MY MOTHER’S UNCONVENTIONAL STYLE MADE ME COVET THE SIMPLE LIFE. She had a circle of cool friends who went against the mainstream in the Sixties hippy era. I was conscious that we stood out for dressing unusually, so ordinary clothing seemed exotic to me. I was obsessed with my school uniform.

I SPENT MY FIRST PAY CHEQUE ON A PAIR OF CHARLES JOURDAN BOOTS. They were burgundy leather and made me look like a soul girl. I paired them with grey school trousers , IRXQG LQ MXPEOH VDOHV ,·YH DOZD\V ORYHG GUHVVLQJ VOLJKWO\ like I was in a convent, but with a glamorous shoe.

WEARING BOYS’ SHIRTS MADE ME FEEL POWERFUL. It started aged eight when a friend lent me a gingham shirt. I refused to take it off for weeks because I felt it gave me PDJLFDO SRZHUV 7KHQ , WXUQHG WR MXPEOH VDOHV WR ÀQG FULVS ER\V· shirts; wearing them created a sense of togetherness for me.

I NEVER SEEK ATTENTION WITH MY STYLE, BUT I DON’T WANT TO BE ANONYMOUS EITHER. I wear my own stuff 99 per cent of the time; it helps me understand where I want to take my work next. Then I mix in pieces made by friends, like Susie &DYH·V 7KH 9DPSLUH·V :LIH GUHVVHV RU 3KRHEH 3KLOR HUD &pOLQH

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD TAUGHT ME THAT FASHION IS POLITICAL. I moved to London at 16 to work in her store and EHLQJ SDUW RI WKH SXQN VFHQH JDYH PH WKH ÀUVW UHDO VHQVH RI power through clothing.

I OWN HUNDREDS OF JUMPERS. I love opening my cupboard and seeing them all. Many made in my early career are full of holes, but I keep them anyway. I used to only wear them around the house, but now I enjoy the history they represent.
