Charles W. Shabica, Ph.D., P.G. is an Emeritus Professor of Earth Science at Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Shabica is an authority on sustainable coastal management, including preservation of shores, beaches, ravines, and wetlands.

Chris Treiber Chris has been assisting members of the Commu nity House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 1996. His specializations are training for strength, functional movement, and balance, and working with older adult populations. Chris’s experi ence makes him one of the most sought out trainers on the North Shore. Chris is certified through the American Council on Exercise, the Functional Aging Institute (Functional Aging Specialist) and the Gray Institute (Applied Functional Science).

Bob Davis Bob has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 2001. Bob enjoys working with seniors and teens as well as those with special needs including rehabilitation. Helping those in the gym comple ments Bob’s career in sports media that has taken him to multiple NFL Superbowls, and the NCAA Basketball Final Four. Bob is certified through the International Sports Science Association.

Dolores Ohlwein Dolores has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 1991. She enjoys helping clients maintain a healthy lifestyle by using the following methods: functional training, core/balance exer cises, weight training, weight bearing exercises, and stretching. She is certified through the Idea International Association of Fitness Professionals with an emphasis in exercise and aging.

Patryk Ruta Patryk joined the Community House Fitness Center team in February of 2020. With experience training serious athletes, weekend warriors, and everyone in between, Patryk has a passion for helping his clients achieve their goals. His expertise makes him an ideal trainer for athletes looking to build strength and boost their performance. He holds a Bache lor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Studies and is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (Performance Enhancement Specializa tion). Patryk is also a Certified Functional Strength Coach.

Self-Defense Training Workshops for Adults Learn to anticipate and avoid potentially dangerous situations and how to defend yourself against a physical attack from a bigger and stronger attacker. Advanced Karate Class curriculum enables the beginner student through advanced to develop an effective form of self-defense. The beginner class in American Sign Language is a 4-week session with Justin Dougan-LeBlanc, a deaf professor who uses sign language as his first language. This workshop will focus on the introduction to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. You will learn numbers 1-100, practice fingerspelling, and begin to understand the use of basic vocabulary and phrases.

Traditional Karate emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of body dynamics and mental discipline. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree Black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the White belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill requirements under practice conditions and in a test environment for promotion up to and including the Black belt (dan). NOTE: Uniforms, belts, tests, and tournaments are optional at an additional cost.

ObedienceDog BIG SKY DOG TRAINING Dog Obedience Puppy This class is designed as a positive and reward based Puppy Head Start Program. Your puppy will learn: focus and attention, sit, down, wait and stay, walking on a loose leash, walking through a door correctly and recall (come) to name a few. Each of the 6-week lessons will also focus on your concerns, like housebreaking, chewing and barking. This class will teach you the rea soning behind a puppy’s thought process as well as the prevention of and response to unwanted behaviors.

NO CLASS: 9/3 BIG SKY DOG TRAINING Dog Obedience Basic/Adult This class is designed to review commands and increases the difficulty of exercises by extending the time and distance for each command. At each lesson you will be able to focus on your concerns, like housebreaking, chewing, barking and pulling on the leash, to name a few. This class will teach you how to effectively train your dog while getting your dog to merge into your schedule and lifestyle. People interested in obtaining their dog’s Canine Good Citizen Certification will be able to test at the end of the class.

CREATIVE PAWS DOG TRAINING COMMUNITY HOUSE DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINERS: Big Sky Dog Training Classes Bring soft treats, 6’ leash (no retractable/expandable leashes), and clean-up bags to each class. Please do not wear sandals without a back strap. On the first day of class please bring: your dog’s vaccination papers (need to see only, you can keep), completed registration form which will be e-mailed to you prior to class, and $10 materials fee paid directly to the instructor (covers equipment and documents provided throughout the six week program). All recommended training methods will use positive reinforcement techniques. Dog Training hand signals, voice command and a marker word will be used throughout the class along with the five basic rewards; touch, voice, loose leash, play, and treats. These programs are not appropriate for dogs which are reactive to people or other dogs.

CREATIVE PAWS Dog Obedience 101 Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedi ence: sit, down, stand, recall (coming when called), stay, and heel — everything your companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Posi tive reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards or a small toy with you to class.

CREATIVE PAWS Dog Obedience Puppy Puppy Class provides a positive environ ment for socialization of puppies and people alike! Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both humandirected aggression and dog-on-dog ag gression, as well as anxiety and fear-based behavior problems. Additional topics cov ered are house training, mouthing, barking, and preventing behavior problems. Obedi ence behaviors of sit, coming when called, and walking on a leash will be introduced. This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2-4 months old. All dogs must have at least 2 rounds of vaccinations prior to class.

HOW TO REGISTER Registration received through the mail, or in person will be processed by 5 pm the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by registering online at mycommunityhouse.org.

The Community House intends to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES Register early! Prior to the start of any class, reg istration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Do not wait until the day of the first class to register or you may find the class has been canceled due to low enrollment.

If School District 36 cancels classes for the entire day, all of the Community House children’s programs (including Childcare) starting before noon will be canceled. Decisions on all adult programs and children’s programs starting after noon will be made on a case-by-case basis. Please check mycommunityhouse.org for complete details on class cancellations.

The Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times. The Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see a staff member. The Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fundraising events, our annual campaign, and donations.

RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

The Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.

REFUND POLICY Full refunds will be issued for classes that are cancelled due to insufficient registration. Should COVID-19 require a return to virtual programming or a combination of virtual and in-person program ming, we will issue pro-rated refunds for any pro grams that can not be completed through a virtual or combination platform. Other refunds, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS

PRORATED POLICY Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instruc tor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.
