aboutus Founded in 1911, the Community House is a non-profit

organization offering sports, educational, and arts programming for children and adults. The historic building features a fitness center, theater, rental space, and garden. As an independent 501(c)(3) we receive no tax dollars and rely on donations, memberships, and program fees to sustain our organization. The Community House is proud to have served generations of Winnetka residents and North Shore families. Members and Non-Members from Winnetka and surrounding communities are welcome to participate in any of our classes, programs, lectures, and events.

Formed in 1976, The Woman’s Board supports our mission by contributing critical funds to our operating budget each year through its fundraising efforts. Our Winter Break Camp will hit on all facets of the game, including guard/post development, defense, plyometrics, hand-eye coordination, footwork, dribbling, basketball cuts, screen and roll situations, learning the art of the jumpshot, game situations, and building a basketball IQ so players can make quick, smart decisions on the court. The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. EARLY TAEKWONDO CLASS

KARATE

Karate emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of body dynamics and mental discipline. Participants learn alertness, self-control, and mental strategies. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree Black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the White belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill specific requirements in a test environment for promotion up to and including the Black belt (dan). Pee Wee Karate Students learn how to control their energy levels and concentration through study of fundamental Karate principles. Early Taekwondo

is a 2,000-year-old martial art that is accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities. Students can improve concentration, self-esteem, and achieve lifelong physical fitness while learning self-defense skills through Taekwondo. NOTE: A $50 uniform fee is required at the first class. Belt testing is offered through KH Kim Taekwondo at an additional fee and is held twice a year. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gear.

Meet Your Music Instructors! Celeste Cifala Roy Celeste is an early childhood movement, music, and yoga teacher at the Community House, and has taught throughout the North Shore for over 35 years. She has worked with the Old Town School of Folk Music, National-Louis University and Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. Celeste’s interactive Everybody Move Inc. classes cultivate play, imagination and fun!

Daniel Rosa, “Teacher Dan” A graduate of Loyola Academy, Dan is a talented multi-instrumentalist and popular teacher of piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, percussion, and voice at the Community House. Dan is the founder of Music ‘n’ Me and Top Note Music Academy. A firm believer that music should be fun, Dan enjoys sharing his love of music with his students. This class is designed to review commands and increases the difficulty of exercises by extending the time and distance for each command. Big Sky Classes Bring soft treats, 6’ leash (no retractable/expandable), and clean-up bags to each class. Please do not wear sandals without a back strap. On the first day of class please bring: your dog’s vaccination papers (need to see only, you can keep), completed registration form which will be e-mailed to you prior to class, and $15 materials fee paid directly to the instructor (covers equipment and documents provided throughout the six week program). All recommended training methods will use positive reinforcement techniques. Dog Training hand signals, voice command and a marker word will be used throughout the class along with the five basic rewards; touch, voice, loose leash, play, and treats. Meet Your Dance Instructors! Gwendolyn Britt Ballet and Fantasy Dance Gwendolyn has been teaching ballet and Fantasy Dance classes at the Community House for over 20 years. Her students learn proper ballet technique in an encouraging atmosphere. As a performer, Gwendolyn danced for the Lynda Martha Dance Company. She is a certified teacher with the Cecchetti Council of America. Gwendolyn is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Music with a BS in Ballet Education.

E. Marc Nevins Adult Ballet Marc is a dancer with nearly 20 years of performing experience including appearances with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West, and Evanston Concert Ballet. Marc studied at the University of Utah, Interlochen Arts Academy, School of American Ballet in New York, and with Maria Tallchief in Chicago.

Kateryna Suvorova Hip Hop Kateryna has been teaching Hip Hop since 2019 and has worked with all ages and levels! She loves helping her students to build confidence and enjoy the process of trying and learning new things.

Aaron is the Artistic Director of Children’s Theatre of Winnetka. His local theatre credits include productions with the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Northwestern University, Paramount Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, and Marriott Theatre. He has also toured North America in the Broadway companies of A Chorus Line, Disney’s Mary Poppins, and Anything Goes. Aaron holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Oklahoma, and a M.Ed. in Theatre Pedagogy from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Mallory Mulligan Wendt Irish Dance Mallory has had an active dance career while winning international dance competitions. She has a passion for teaching dance to children and is a registered T.C.R.G. through the An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha.

This hidden outdoor gem can accommodate 200 guests for a theater style ceremony and 150 for a seated dinner, with plenty of room for your first dance under the stars.

The Garden Room accommodates 250 people theater style or 200 with tables and chairs. This space can also be divided into two separate rooms. A summer juried art fair, Art in the Village, takes place in Hubbard Woods Park — right in the middle of the Hubbard Woods Design District and along bustling Green Bay Road in June. Located for over 90 years on the second floor of the Community House, classes are held in an historic, professional art studio featuring skylights and a large stone fireplace as well as a well-equipped print room facility. Classes in drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), pastels, etching, printmaking, figure study, encaustic and more are taught by a distinguished faculty–offering a unique, creative experience. League members may exhibit at the annual Members’ Show and throughout the year in NSAL gallery space within the Community House. Membership benefits also include generous discounts at various art supply stores in the area and an eblast/brochure subscription.

Women’s Exchange is a unique community of women (and sometimes men) committed to growth and authentic connection, be it through book discussions, building one’s financial skills, looking at life’s education, learning about health and wellness, writing together, creating together, walking together, learning and discerning, moving through transitions or simply making a change with a new thought or idea. Each year, for nearly four decades, Women’s Exchange hosts over 100 workshops and classes and special events, all where conversations matter. EMERGENCY CLOSINGS The Community House

intends to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions, or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.

36 cancels classes for the entire day, all of the Community House children’s programs (including Fitness Center childcare) starting before noon will be canceled. RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS The Community House makes

every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the fee for the date missed.

not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times. The Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see a staff member. The Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fundraising events, our annual campaign, and donations.
