Keeping Our Community Safe

In these challenging times, we know everyone is thinking about safety – and we want to share our plans for keeping this community as safe as possible. One thing we’ve learned is that when it comes to this pandemic, things can change! Please know that the Community House is committed to following guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health, and you can always visit our website for the latest information about our safety protocols.

Masks & Distancing • Face coverings that fully cover the nose and mouth are required in all areas of the Community House. • Physical distancing is also required. Classes are structured to maintain at least 6’ of distance between participants, and everyone in the Community House is asked to be diligent in maintaining at least 6’ between themselves and others.

Personal Responsibility • Participants who have been in close contact with anyone who has COVID-19, are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, or are awaiting COVID-19 test results should stay home. • Everyone is encouraged to wash their hands frequently and make use of the hand sanitizer available throughout the building.

Cleaning & Sanitizing • All high-touch areas and any shared objects are frequently cleaned and sanitized using products that have been approved by the EPA as effective. • Instructors have cleaning caddies available to them, stocked with EPA-approved supplies, to facilitate frequent cleaning. • Thorough cleaning is conducted throughout the building each night with EPA-approved products.

Air Exchange • All of our rooms in the new wing, where the majority of our classes are held, have forced air HVAC, with the exchange rate maximized to push more of our inside air out and bring more fresh outside air in as it cycles.

Food & Drink • Water fountains have been decommissioned throughout the building, and vending machines are closed. • No food may be eaten in Community House common areas.

Fitness Center safety protocols can be found on page 42.

Update!

TheWinnetkaShow.com Dear Antiques + Modernism Show and Community House supporters, The Community House Woman’s Board would like to update you on the status of the beloved Antiques + Modernism (A+M) Show. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 A+M Show. We did months of due diligence and research on in-person and virtual options, and none of them were feasible. The overriding consideration was ensuring the well-being and safety of our attendees, dealers, and the wider North Shore community. With heavy hearts we made the call to take a hiatus from the Show until November 2021. We very much hope the Show can be in person by then! In addition to missing this spectacular style and design event, the Community House will also be missing critical fundraising revenue. The A+M Show is the largest fundraising event for the Community House. The lack of proceeds this year will negatively impact the Community House operating budget, which is already substantially decreased due to COVID-19 safety measures that limit capacity and greatly reduce revenue. For that reason, whether you are a fan of the A+M Show…a Community House supporter…a user of Community House programs or the Fitness Center…we ask that you please consider making a gift to the Community House to help offset the shortfall caused by the cancellation of the Show. Please go to www.mycommunityhouse.org/support-us to donate, or call the Community House at 847-446-0537. The Woman’s Board sincerely appreciates your generosity to sustain this vital community organization in a challenging time. We know many will be disappointed that we are not able to produce a Show this year. Please know the Community House Woman’s Board shares a heartfelt THANK YOU to past Show attendees, dealers, sponsors, and all who are involved in coordinating this large fundraising event. We cannot wait to see you all in November 2021, which will be a grand celebration of the 50th anniversary of the A+M Show! Please visit www.mycommunityhouse.org/support-us to support the Community House today, and be on the lookout for future communications about the November 2021 Antiques + Modernism Show! With our gratitude and best wishes, The Community House Woman’s Board Kate Kligora, Woman’s Board President Kim Ronan and Elyse Hahner, A+M Show Co-Chairs. For more information about the A+M Show, please visit the Show website at www.thewinnetkashow.com.

THE COMMUNITY HOUSE WOMAN’S BOARD

The Woman’s Board was formed in 1976 by an enterprising group of women to support the Community House, an entity they considered vital to the unique quality of their community. The Community House has evolved since then, but the fundraising efforts of the Woman’s Board have always stayed constant. The Woman’s Board, which also includes a Junior Board for high school students, is the fundraising arm of the Community House, contributing critical funds to the operating budget each year. Fundraising efforts currently focus on event fundraising, including the esteemed Antiques+Modernism Show, a NEW COVID-19 friendly family holiday event called Winter Wanderland, Wine & Beer Tasting, Fashion For The House and a FunRun. Our members are a talented and energetic group of women, who want to support and promote the Community House – and have fun together while doing so. Interested in getting involved? Karate

Participants are carefully initiated into karate, which focuses on alertness of mind, self-control, and mental strategies to meet life challenges. Traditional karate is a martial art that emphasizes the principles and applications of weaponless self-defense through the use of total body dynamics and mental discipline. Students will constantly strive for technical excellence and enhancement of one’s character. The following items are optional and will incur additional costs: uniforms, belt tests, and tournaments. Belt Ranking System: There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test environment to secure progressive promotions up to and including the black belt (dan) levels. When a student has acquired a strong foundation in the fundamentals of karate, he or she can be promoted to the rank of first-degree black belt.

The specific services and support provided by the Club have changed with the demands of the times, but we continue our tradition of “giving back” by connecting our community through friendship, learning and service. Current circumstances have created significant challenges for us all as we have had to re-imagine ourselves and learn to reach out to one another in a socially distanced world. Thanks to our member’s participation and financial contributions, we have been able to: deliver numerous meals to front-line hospital workers in North Shore Hospitals; provide PPE to support the Winnetka Police Department; organize a food drive to support the New Trier Township Food Pantry; and financially support the educational and rebuilding efforts of My Block, My Hood, My City. High school members from our Youth Service Board work with residents at North Shore Place to make intergenerational friendships and the Club continues to award college scholarships to outstanding student leaders from New Trier Township high schools. We host a monthly Book Group and offer many other social and cultural events for our membership, including museum tours, engaging lectures and other events to enrich and empower.

Classes in drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), pastels, etching, printmaking, figure study, encaustic and more are taught by a distinguished faculty–offering a unique, creative experience.
