Founded in 1911, the Community House is a non-profit organization promoting sports, educational, and arts programming for children and adults. The historic building features a fitness center, theater, rental space and garden. As an independent 501(c)(3) we receive no tax dollars and rely on donations, memberships and program fees to sustain our organization. The Community House is proud to have served generations of Winnetka residents and North Shore families.
Members and Non-Members from Winnetka and surrounding communities are welcome to participate in any of our classes, programs, lectures, and events.

The mission of the Community House is to enrich the lives of North Shore residents, their families and friends by providing diverse educational, cultural, social and recreational opportunities for people of all ages. Bob Davis
Bob has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 2001. Bob enjoys working with seniors and teens as well as those with special needs including rehabilitation. Helping those in the gym complements Bob’s career in sports media that has taken him to multiple NFL Superbowls, and the NCAA Basketball Final Four. Bob is certified through the International Sports Science Association.
Dolores Ohlwein
Dolores has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 1991. She enjoys helping clients maintain a healthy lifestyle by using the following methods: functional training, core/balance exercises, weight training, weight bearing exercises, and stretching. She is certified through the Idea International Association of Fitness Professionals with an emphasis in exercise and aging.
Patryk Ruta
Patryk joined the Community House Fitness Center team in February of 2020. With experience training serious athletes, weekend warriors, and everyone in between, Patryk has a passion for helping his clients achieve their goals. His expertise makes him an ideal trainer for athletes looking to build strength and boost their performance. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Studies and is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (Performance Enhancement Specialization). Patryk is also a Certified Functional Strength Coach.
Chris Treiber
Chris has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 1996. His specializations are training for strength, functional movement, balance and older adult populations. Chris’s experience makes him one of the most sought out trainers on the North Shore. Chris is certified through the American Council on Exercise, the Functional Aging Institute (Functional Aging Specialist) and the Gray Institute (Applied Functional Science).

This gentle chair yoga practice is for adults of all ages, including those with mobility limitations due to aging, injury, or recent recovery from a surgery. Learn to create flexibility and space in your body, use effective breathing techniques, and work on stability and balance. Make Health Your Hobby: 3-Session Series NEW!
This 3-part series will introduce the main components of leading a healthy lifestyle. Each week will be an interactive discussion with strategies and practical tips to get you thinking and putting new habits into practice. Workshop 1: Just Eat Real Foods will examine how eating better foods makes us feel better. We will discuss what foods we should choose more of and what to avoid.

Circle NEW!
Join our Songwriter’s Circle and make connections with other writers. Share your talents, perform your songs acoustically and give/receive feedback. All songs (music/lyrics or both) must be performed live by you or with an accompanist (piano will be provided). Multiple lyric/lead sheets must also be provided by you for other songwriters. MARTIAL ARTS
Traditional Karate emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of body dynamics and mental discipline. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree Black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the White belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill requirements under practice conditions and in a test environment for promotion up to and including the Black belt (dan). NOTE: Uniforms, belts, tests, and tournaments are optional at an additional cost.

Taekwondo is a 2,000-year - old martial art that is accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities. Stu dents can improve concentration , and achieve lifelong physical fitness learn ing self-defense skills through Taekwondo NOTE: A $50 uniform fee is required at the first class. Belt testing is offered through KH Kim Taekwondo at an additional fee and is held twice a year. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gear.

BIG SKY DOG TRAINING Dog Obedience Puppy
This class is designed as a positive and reward based Puppy Head Start Program. Your puppy will learn: focus and attention, sit, down, wait and stay, walking on a loose leash, walking through a door correctly and recall (come) to name a few. Each of the 6-week lessons will also focus on your concerns, like housebreaking, chewing and barking. This class will teach you the reasoning behind a puppy’s thought process as well as the prevention of and response to unwanted behaviors.

Big Sky Dog Training Classes
BIG SKY DOG TRAINING Dog Obedience Basic/Adult
This class is designed to review commands and increases the difficulty of exercises by extending the time and distance for each command. At each lesson you will be able to focus on your concerns, like housebreaking, chewing, barking and pulling on the leash, to name a few. This class will teach you how to effectively train your dog while getting your dog to merge into your schedule and lifestyle. People interested in obtaining their dog’s Canine Good Citizen Certification will be able to test at the end of the class.

Bring soft treats, 6’ leash (no retractable/expandable leashes), and clean-up bags to each class. Please do not wear sandals without a back strap. On the first day of class please bring: your dog’s vaccination papers (need to see only, you can keep), completed registration form which will be e-mailed to you prior to class, and $10 materials fee paid directly to the instructor (covers equipment and documents provided throughout the six week program). All recommended training methods will use positive reinforcement techniques. Dog training hand signals, voice command and a marker word will be used throughout the class along with the five basic rewards; touch, voice, loose leash, play, and treats. These programs are not appropriate for dogs which are reactive to people or other dogs.

Dog Obedience Puppy
Puppy Class provides a positive environment for socialization of puppies and people alike! Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both humandirected aggression and dog-on-dog aggression, as well as anxiety and fear-based behavior problems. Additional topics covered are house training, mouthing, barking, and preventing behavior problems. Obedience behaviors of sit, coming when called, and walking on a leash will be introduced. This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2-4 months old. All dogs must have at least 2 rounds of vaccinations prior to class.

Dog
Obedience Rally
Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and the handler! Rally is a sport in which ALL dogs are encouraged to participate. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to take this class. Obedience skills of sit, down, stand, stay, heeling, and coming when called will be worked on in the context of an obstacle course of obedience exercises.

HOW TO REGISTER
Registration received through the mail, or in person will be processed by 5 pm the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by registering online at mycommunityhouse.org.
PRORATED POLICY
Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.
CANCELLATION OF CLASSES
Register early! Prior to the start of any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Do not wait until the day of the first class to register or you may find the class has been canceled due to low enrollment.
REFUND POLICY
Full refunds will be issued for classes that are cancelled due to insufficient registration. Should COVID-19 require a return to virtual programming or a combination of virtual and in-person programming, we will issue pro-rated refunds for any programs that can not be completed through a virtual or combination platform. Other refunds, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS
The Community House intends to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
If School District 36 cancels classes for the entire day, all of the Community House children’s programs (including Childcare) starting before noon will be canceled. Decisions on all adult programs and children’s programs starting after noon will be made on a case-by-case basis. Please check mycommunityhouse.org for complete details on class cancellations.
RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS
The Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times. The Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see a staff member. The Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fundraising events, our annual campaign, and donations.
