TERMS AND CONDITIONS of AUCTION The following, as amended by any posted notices, specific bills of sale or similar instruments relating to a transaction or oral announcements during the sale, constitutes the entire terms and conditions on which property listed in the catalogue shall be offered for sale or sold by Murad Auctions, the auctioneer conducting the sale on behalf of any consignor for whom we act as agent. DDFAA (as subsequently defined) is not an auctioneer and is not conducting the auction or arranging any resulting transaction. In these Conditions of Sale, “We” and “Our” refer to Murad Auctions. 1. As used herein the term “bid price” means the price at which a lot is sold to the purchaser and the term “purchase price” means The aggregate of (a) the bid price, (b) A PREMIUM PAYABLE BY THE PURCHASER OF 17.5% of the hammer price (or 20.5% if bidding via LiveAuctioneers.com online, or 22.5% if bidding via Invaluable.com online) and (c) unless the purchaser is exempt by law from the payment thereof, any Texas or local sales tax (or compensating use tax of another state) and applicable taxes. Murad Auctions has been authorized by the consignor to retain, as part of our remuneration, the premium payable by the purchaser. 2. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot, and title to the lot shall pass to the purchaser, in accordance with all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon the purchaser (a) assumes full risk and responsibility therefore (b) if requested will sign a confirmation of purchase, and (c) will pay the purchase price in full in cash for all lots purchased. To prevent misdelivery and inconvenience in settlement of a purchase, no lot may be transferred. All property shall be removed from our premises at the purchaser’s expense immediately following the sale. If not so removed we may, as an accommodation to the purchaser, transfer the property to a public warehouse or other premises under our control or the control of DDFAA at the purchaser’s sole risk and expense. Each sale made pursuant to these Conditions of Sale will be deemed to constitute a grant of security interest by the purchaser to us in, and we may retain as collateral security for the purchaser’s obligations to us or our assignee, any of the purchaser’s property in our possession, and we may apply against such obligations all monies held or received by us for the account of, or owing to, the purchaser. Each purchaser consents to the filing of public notices or our lien. Whenever the purchaser pays only a part of the total purchase price for one or more lots purchased, we may apply such payments, in our sole discretion, to the lot or lots we choose. Payment will not be deemed made in full until we have collected all amounts due in cash or good funds represented by cleared checks or cashier checks. If the foregoing conditions or any other applicable conditions herein are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to us and the consignor by law, including but without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the purchase price, we at our option may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or b) resell the property with a three day notice to the original defaulting purchaser, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for the payment of any deficiency plus all costs and expenses of both sales, our commission at our standard rates, all other charges due hereunder, attorney’s fees and incidental damages; or (c) take any measures it deems necessary. If Murad Auctions must resell the property, the original defaulting purchaser will be held responsible for any deficiencies in the purchase price, including any and all associated expenses including reasonable attorney’s fees, warehousing, commissions or any other costs associated with the default. No actions by us or any third party before or after the auction shall be deemed a waiver of any of the foregoing. 3. We reserve the right to withdraw any property at any time before the actual sale. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue and no lot shall be divided for sale. 4. The auction will be conducted by Louis Murad TXS 13362. We reserve the right to reject any bid

from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event the auctioneer doubts the validity of any bid, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sales records shall be conclusive in all respects. 5. If we are prevented by fire, theft or any reason whatsoever from delivering any property to the purchaser, our liability shall be limited to the sum actually paid therefore by the purchaser and shall in no event include any incidental or consequential damages. 6. Some lots are offered subject to a “reserve,” which is an undisclosed minimum price below which the lot will not be sold. If a lot is offered subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of the consignor, whether by opening bidding or continuing bidding in response to other bidders until reaching the reserve. 7. Born in Toronto, Canada, Collins lived in Germany as a child before moving to Austin in 1901. She studied under Robert Jerome Hill and attended the University of Texas, Austin. She also attended Sophie Newcomb College, New Orleans, where she received instruction from Ellsworth Woodward. Moving to New York, Collins became a student of Kenneth Hayes Miller, Dimitri Romanowsky and Allen Tucker at the Art Students League of New York. She spent two years in Europe. Collins returned to Austin where she worked thereafter, save for a short period when she maintained a studio in Dallas (1925-26).

He also executed the Littlefield Fountain and associated sculptures located at U.T. Austin. He was the founder of the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts. Lillie and Lulu Kleberg were the daughters of Robert Kleberg, Jr. who managed and later owned the King Ranch in Burnett, Texas.

Paul Rodda Cook was a Borne, TX native and attended the University of Texas. He studied painting with Hugo David Pohl in San Antonio and later in Taos under Walter Ufer and Leon Gaspard. After that time he traveled to New England and studied with Hermann Dudley Murphy, Charles Rosen, Lowell Birge Harrison and Henry Lee McFee. He lived and worked in San Antonio until the 1940s and later lived in Taos, NM; Houston, TX and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Cook’s paintings can be found in the following collections: Stark Museum of Art, Orange, TX; Witte Museum, San Antonio; San Antonio Art League. This painting was acquired by Minnie Bryant and Britain Rice Webb of San Antonio in 1916 and has remained in the same family since that time; and is from Mr. and Mrs. Britain Webb’s grandson’s collection, current. Britain Rice Webb was a lawyer and wrote for the Fort Worth Star Telegram before moving the family to San Antonio in 1916. The Webbs purchased this painting, along with the Julian Onderdonk, Spanish Oaks, Medina Valley, Lot 164 in this auction while living in San Antonio’s Laurel Heights neigborhood. Audley Dean Nicols was a native of Pittsburgh, PA but his love of the desert landscape eventually drew him to settle later in El Paso, TX. Nicols studied at the Art Students League of New York and at the school of the Metropolitan Museum of Art under Edwin Howland Blashfield, Kenyon Cox and Henry Siddons Mowbray. He first traveled to the El Paso desert after suffering health problems. From there he painted the deserts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. After these visits, he returned to El Paso as a permanent resident. The following writing is from a piece written by the Guyens Printing Company of El Paso, TX: “From his El Paso base, Nicols launched a prolific production of desert landscapes which brought him world fame and fortune, which he never really sought. He came particularly well-known for the exact portrayal of the strong clear light peculiar to the desert southwest. Experts insist that no other artist has even approached him in this category. At the height of his career when his work was in great demand, he made a practice of working on three paintings at once in a given locale in order to catch the exact lighting he wanted for each. He claimed that the illumination he wanted for each of his paintings existed for perhaps no more than 15 minutes during the day. Therefore, he would work on an early morning scene, a mid-day scene and evening scene simultaneously. And he captured the myriad and detailed colors of the desert as no other artist has been able to, probably because his love made them more visible. Nicols once wrote: ‘The so-called gray of the desert is a mistake. The desert is everything but gray. There are clean fresh blues in the skies, pinks and yellows in the sunset, opalescent purple, rose and lavender in the distant mountains, dull greens of every shade in the vegetation, and reds and yellows in the rocks and earth… but never gray. And there is no flower more vivid in color than the gaudy, waxen blossom of the cactus… pale lemon, pink, bright yellow, violent magentas.’” This painting is an excellent example of Nicols great attention to the atmosphere, light and color of the natural earth, flora and the bright blue desert sky.

Lot 161 PORFIRIO SALINAS (Am. 1910-1973)

Bastrop, TX native Porfirio Salinas is one of Texas’ most prolific and renowned early Texas impressionist painters. He lived in San Antonio and painted the surrounding Texas hill country throughout his lifetime.

This particular painting is an excellent example of his early work, painted circa 1940. In the book The Life of Porfirio Salinas, written by: Mrs. Porfirio Salinas she states: “Porfirio was considered unconventional because he painted landscapes in their natural form and color, just as he saw and felt them.” Salinas does just that in this painting. The bluebonnets are painted in different blue and violet tones due to the dappled sunlight breaking through the trees and undulating hill shadows. There are also varying shades of green in the tree leaves from the natural light shining through. This painting shows Salinas’ early hand through the delicate brushwork.

This painting was acquired by Minnie Bryant and Britain Rice Webb of San Antonio in 1916. The Webbs were neighbors of Onderdonk in the Laurel Heights neighborhood and visited Onderdonk’s home and acquired this, and several other paintings by him. This painting has remained in the same family since that time; and is coming out of Mr. and Mrs. Britain Webb’s grandson’s collection, current. Britain Rice Webb was a lawyer and wrote for the Fort Worth Start Telegram in Fort Worth, TX before moving the family to San Antonio in 1916. The Webbs purchased this painting, along with the Paul Rodda Cook, Texas Landscape in this auction (Lot 143). Britain was a banker, oil man and rancher before he retired to Arizona and passed away. Minnie Webb retained the remaining collection and passed away in San Antonio in 1970. In 1915, when this painting was executed, Onderdonk was responsible for assisting in acquisitions for the Dallas Museum of Arts American Holdings, art chosen from the State Fair. This role was necessary for Onderdonk to support his family, he longed to paint: “I wish that I could have time to devote one month to doing nothing [but] work out of doors with a free mind…” This painting must represent a vital release for Onderdonk. Spending time in a different area, exercising himself to paint a refreshing landscape.

Iwonski was born in Germany in 1830 and moved to the Unites States via Galveston in 1845 with his family and became a naturalized citizen. He lived in New Braunfels and later San Antonio. During the Civil war he sketched troops in the south Texas area. From 1866-1970 Iwonski and artist, Herman Lungkwitz ran a photography studio in San Antonio. In 1871 he took a sabbatical and studied art at the Berlin Academy of Art. These two portraits, likely mother and daughter, are excellent examples of Iwonksiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adept skills as a painter.

Steel first started painting while attending classes with Samuel P. Zeigler at T.C.U. in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;30s. He continued producing paintings, sculpture and photography throughout his life while pursuing a career in advertising as a copywriter in N.Y.C., and after his retirement in Dallas. Lifelong friends with several of the Ft. Worth Circle artists including his wife Sara Shannon Steel. Largely unexhibited but won a 3rd place prize in the 1946 Ft. Worth Art Association local show.

William Wells “Bill” Bomar was born in Fort Worth in 1919, he died in Clovis, NM in 1990. This particular painting came out of a private collection in New Mexico. Bomar was a prominent Fort Worth School artist, known for his abstract, semi geometric compositions that incorporate natural elements in dramatic landscapes and surrealistic worlds. Bomar received instruction from Sallie Blythe Mummert and in watercolors from Joseph G. Bakos in Santa Fe. He studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and studied with John Sloan (1942) while he was there. He also received instruction from Amedee Ozenfant and Hanz Hofmann. Bomar has an impressive exhibition history including: Annual Fort Worth Local Artist Show in the 1940s; a solo show at the Dallas Museum of Art in 1948; Texas Contemporary Artists Show in 1952 at M. Knoedler & Co. in New York; a solo show at the Laguna Gloria, Austin in 1952; Whitney Museum of American Art, 1958; and a solo retrospective at the Old Jail Center, Albany, TX in 1999. His works are found in the following public collections: Dallas Museum of Art; Guggenheim Museum; Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and The University of Texas at Austin. Brownlow started creating art at the age of five in Fort Worth, TX. He studied art under Margaret Littlejohn and Patti East. He experimented with knives and wire as painting tools which lead to his thick textured and exacting lines. Henry B. Caldwell, former director of the Fort Worth Art Center commented: “Brownlow’s painting has vigor and a precious of touch that separates it sharply from the contemporary happenchance school. His work has strength with an underlying appeal for order; his concern with space and color holds fascination to both the traditional as well as abstract painting.”

Gordy studied at Louisiana State University. He was greatly influenced by Matisse; this painting lends itself to the Matisse cut-outs. This work executed in 1973 conveys the cutting edge pop-art style of the period.

Otis Dozier played a major roal in the Dallas art scene in the 1930â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to his death. He studied and later taught painting and drawing at Southern Methodist University. He also taught at the Dallas School of Creative Arts and at Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. He was a prolific artist; he painted the Texas landscape, most prominently the West Texas landscape. This could be attributed to the influence of his early art studies under Frank Reaugh who often took his students on sketching trip to paint plein air landscapes in the plains of West Texas. His subject matter also includs the critters of Texas, be it the goat, turkey or owl. He also frequently traveled to New Mexico to paint landscape and culture. He was widely exhibited in his lifetime across the Southwest. Studying at Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris, Lockwood developed a talent for several forms of modernist painting. Moving to Taos in 1926, Lockwood, along with his friends Kenneth Adams, John Marin and Andrew Dasburg, began to take the painting of the region in a more modernist direction. Lockwood himself painted in Cubist, Expressionist, Surrealist and Constructivist style while in Taos.

Cecil Casebier was a Texas artist born March 22, 1922 in Fort Stockton, and died April 19, 1996 in San Antonio. He was known for portrait, still-life paintings and murals as well as mosaics and stain-glass designs including 18 stained glass windows for St. Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from the University of Southern California and did graduate work at the University of Texas. He served as Faculty Chairman of the Art Center, San Antonio, Texas.

Lot 240 PAUL R. SCHUMANN (Am. 1876-1946)

Schumann was born near Leipzig, Saxony, in the German Empire and immigrated with his family to the United States about 1879. After a brief stay in Indianola, which had been rebuilt on a smaller scale after its destruction in an 1875 hurricane, the family settled in Galveston in 1881. There he received instruction from Julius Stockfleth. According to a contemporary newspaper article, Schumann spent time in Boats at Harbor New York and the East studying and painting, a report corroborated by numerous surviving sketches of New York scenes. His Galveston studio was destroyed in the 1900 hurricane. On the same site, Schumann oil on canvasboard 12 x 16 signed lower right: Paul R Schumann rebuilt a studio in which he afterward taught privately and became a very productive painter, sometimes executing three paintings in one day amid his collection of ship models and statuary. He also worked in $6,000 - $8,000 the open air, once sketching a storm-driven sea until forced to retire by flying spray. Schumann is best known for marine and harbor scenes done in Galveston. He also produced a number of plein-air works in Louisiana, the Texas Hill Country, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and the East Coast on occasional excursions. He worked in crayon, pencil, and pen and ink as well as oils. In his oils he made extensive use of the palette knife with singular effect. Schumann died in Galveston. Had [Schumann] been an artist along the East Coast instead of the Gulf of Mexico, he would have been known all over the world. He is doing for the Gulf Coast what Winslow Homer did for Maine. Emeree was born in Wichita, Kansas, and moved with her family to El Paso in 1907. At age seventeen she studied in Philadelphia with Frank Benton Ashley Linton and afterward with Michael Jacobs. In Texas she was a student of Jose Arpa, Xavier Gonzalez, and Rolla Taylor. She painted and studied at various times in Paris, London, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. She specialized in landscapes and reportedly exhibited in France. In 1924 Emeree established the Emeree Scenic Drive Art School in El Paso, afterward named the Berla Ione Emeree School of Painting. Teel was born in Clarksville and reared in El Paso, where his family moved in 1899. He started his business career as an engineer in Mexico and was afterward superintendent of the mechanical department for a Detroit manufacturer. During this time, he received training in commercial art. After his return to El Paso, he entered the automobile business and in 1927 began to paint full time. He painted in and around El Paso, Santa Fe, Arizona and the Trans-Pecos region of Texas including the Big Bend area. He was a resident of San Antonio in 1934 and returned to El Paso in 1937. William Hogg, a wealthy Houston oilman, once purchased Teel’s entire collection of seventeen paintings, Teel specialized in desert landscapes and pastel portraits. A columnist for the El Paso Times called him a “master in his presentation of far distances, especially noticeable in the scene of lovely quietude, far away blue shadows on the mountain, and a soft light in the foreground.” Teel died in a Long Beach, California, hospital following a short illness. This hand painted oil on linen painting was executed in 2001. Cartmel uses a technique of painting in squares of color mimicking a pixelated look. The subject appears to dematerialize as you approach the painting, but at a distance or through a camera lens, her face becomes almost photorealistic (see reduction). Graduate of University of Texas, Arlington, Cartmel is currently exhibiting his work in New York, California and across Texas. He currently lives in Dallas, TX.
