TERMS AND CONDITIONS of AUCTION The following, as amended by any posted notices, specific bills of sale or similar instruments relating to a transaction or oral announcements during the sale, constitutes the entire terms and conditions on which property listed in the catalogue shall be offered for sale or sold by Murad Auctions, the auctioneer conducting the sale on behalf of any consignor for whom we act as agent. DDFAA (as subsequently defined) is not an auctioneer and is not conducting the auction or arranging any resulting transaction. In these Conditions of Sale, “We” and “Our” refer to Murad Auctions. 1. As used herein the term “bid price” means the price at which a lot is sold to the purchaser and the term “purchase price” means The aggregate of (a) the bid price, (b) A PREMIUM PAYABLE BY THE PURCHASER OF 17.5% of the hammer price (or 20.5% if bidding via LiveAuctioneers.com online) and (c) unless the purchaser is exempt by law from the payment thereof, any Texas or local sales tax (or compensating use tax of another state) and applicable taxes. Murad Auctions has been authorized by the consignor to retain, as part of our remuneration, the premium payable by the purchaser. 2. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot, and title to the lot shall pass to the purchaser, in accordance with all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon the purchaser (a) assumes full risk and responsibility therefore (b) if requested will sign a confirmation of purchase, and (c) will pay the purchase price in full in cash for all lots purchased. To prevent misdelivery and inconvenience in settlement of a purchase, no lot may be transferred. All property shall be removed from our premises at the purchaser’s expense immediately following the sale. If not so removed we may, as an accommodation to the purchaser, transfer the property to a public warehouse or other premises under our control or the control of DDFAA at the purchaser’s sole risk and expense. Each sale made pursuant to these Conditions of Sale will be deemed to constitute a grant of security interest by the purchaser to us in, and we may retain as collateral security for the purchaser’s obligations to us or our assignee, any of the purchaser’s property in our possession, and we may apply against such obligations all monies held or received by us for the account of, or owing to, the purchaser. Each purchaser consents to the filing of public notices or our lien. Whenever the purchaser pays only a part of the total purchase price for one or more lots purchased, we may apply such payments, in our sole discretion, to the lot or lots we choose. Payment will not be deemed made in full until we have collected all amounts due in cash or good funds represented by cleared checks or cashier checks. If the foregoing conditions or any other applicable conditions herein are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to us and the consignor by law, including but without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the purchase price, we at our option may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or b) resell the property with a three day notice to the original defaulting purchaser, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for the payment of any deficiency plus all costs and expenses of both sales, our commission at our standard rates, all other charges due hereunder, attorney’s fees and incidental damages; or (c) take any measures it deems necessary. If Murad Auctions must resell the property, the original defaulting purchaser will be held responsible for any deficiencies in the purchase price, including any and all associated expenses including reasonable attorney’s fees, warehousing, commissions or any other costs associated with the default. No actions by us or any third party before or after the auction shall be deemed a waiver of any of the foregoing. 3. We reserve the right to withdraw any property at any time before the actual sale. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue and no lot shall be divided for sale. 4. The auction will be conducted by Louis Murad TXS 13362. We reserve the right to reject any bid

from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event the auctioneer doubts the validity of any bid, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sales records shall be conclusive in all respects. 5. If we are prevented by fire, theft or any reason whatsoever from delivering any property to the purchaser, our liability shall be limited to the sum actually paid therefore by the purchaser and shall in no event include any incidental or consequential damages. 6. Some lots are offered subject to a “reserve,” which is an undisclosed minimum price below which the lot will not be sold. If a lot is offered subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of the consignor, whether by opening bidding or continuing bidding in response to other bidders until reaching the reserve. 7. Unless prior arrangements have been made with Murad Auctions, there may be a seven day waiting period if purchasing artwork with a personal or company check. FOLIO: Edition of 66/500, 1986. Fort Worth, TX natives and twin brother duo of painters created this folio in 1986 depicting landscapes and birds

of Texas. The folio contains 137 sheets, 50 of which are images of the birds and landscapes. Commentary by the twins precedes each of the plates. The forward in the folio is by Harry Tennison, followed by a written introduction by Stuart Gentling and an essay titled A Collection of a Texas Bird Glimpser, by Texas author John Graves. Excellent condition.

Le Taureau au Rodeo, 1926 is reproduced in a full color, fold-out page, on page 80, plate number 6 of the book, Mary Bonner: Impressions of A Printmaker, by Mary Carolyn Hollers George. Mary Anita “Polly” Bonner was born in 1887 at the Bayou Bartholomew Plantation near Bastrop, Louisiana. The artist was skilled in several mediums: painting, watercolor, pastel, mural painting, sculpting, illustration, and best known, with international acclaim, as a print maker. She traveled and maintained studios in San Antonio and Paris, France. She studied and trained as an artist under Robert Onderdonk; at UT Austin; Stickney College in Pasadena, CA; Woodstock Art Colony. She exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francias, in Paris from 1923-1931; at the Salon d’Automne, Paris; Simonson’s Gallery in Paris; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; and the Southern States Art League to name a few. Her art can be found in the collections of the New York Public Library, McNay Art Museum, the British Museum, London; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; San Antonio Museum of Art to name a few.

On reverse of this painting is a sticker from the Country Store Gallery in Austin, TX, hand written on the sticker is: “Laguna Gloria by Bird Jones.” Laguna Gloria in Austin was built by the late, Clara Driscoll. Ms. Driscoll was a beloved patron of Austin, she was also known as the “Savior of the Alamo.” In 1903 Driscoll was enlisted to join the Daughters of the Republic and was responsible for raising funds to purchase and save the property. Laguna Gloria is now part of, and on the property of the Texas Fine Arts Association. Furthermore, Birdie Jones is remembered as a painter and ceramic artist and one of the most successful art teachers in Austin.

John Douglas moved to Dallas from Oklahoma in 1914, he trained as an artist under whom some would call the “father of Texas art,” Frank Reaugh. During the 1920’s and 30’s he accompanied Reaugh and his students on his many sketching trips in the Texas panhandle, which is likely when this painting was executed. Douglas went on in later decades to paint in Santa Fe and then at the Art Students League of New York where he was a student of Thomas Hart Benton and Boardman Robinson. Upon his return to Dallas, he worked as a muralist and sculptor for the TX Centennial at Fair Park in 1936. In the 1940’s he opened a gallery and frame shop, where he supported local artists and made custom frames that are a legend in their own right today.

Olin Travis created an untitled maquette (oil on board) in the year 1936, and entered the proposed artwork into a mural competition shortly thereafter. Travisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposal was rejected, but this gave rise for Travis to expand the ideas expressed in the composition. The updated version titled, War Lords was submitted for a proposed mural in Texas. Unfortunately, sponsorship was never found, and Travis was despondent over the unrealized mural commission. Another unique variation of War Lords is currently in an important collection of Texas Art. The ideas in these paintings were radical expressions of Social-Realism, an important art movement that used art as a life force and sought to change public opinion through a social critique of societal ills. Although this movement was promoted by the likes of important American artists Ben Shahn, William Gropper, and Louis Lozowick its popularity was prevalent in the Northeast and Midwest. Examples of this style of painting were rarely seen in Texas. War Lords is thus very rare and one of the earliest examples of Social-Realism in Texas Art. A Dallas native, Travis began painting at an early age, studying under Frank Reaugh and Vivien Aunspaugh. The artist moved to Chicago where he studied for five years and became an associate instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago. Travis then became an instructor at the Chicago Commercial Art School and was a commercial artist before returning to Dallas in 1924. Travis and his wife, Kathryne Hail Travis, moved back to Dallas and founded the Dallas Art Institute. Later they setup the Ozark Summer School in Cass, Arkansas. Travis continued to teach for over 30 years. His exhibitions spanned the country, including Dallas Museum of Art, Southern States Art League, Denver Art Museum, Roswell Museum and Art Center, Corcoran Gallery of Art and National Museum of American Art. In the accompanying exhibition catalogue published by the Georgia Museum of Art: Coming Home: America Paintings 1930-1950, from The Schoen Collection, Travisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter narrates details on War Lords, these descriptions were in a letter written in 1988 by a prior owner of this

piece. The letter explains the multi-layered iconography present in the painting, stating, “the far left and far right of the painting, in an altarpiece like space, stand the American worker and European worker… The militarism of the three saluting generals point to prostitution (blonde woman in the window), poverty (beggar with tin cups), and crime (fired gun rising out of smoke). At the center… looms the faceless ‘war god’, which the ‘war lords’ to the left and right hold a gun and a bomb… The politicians’ winged heads swam around the war god... the politicians wives play bridge, and a man in prison stripes looks out from behind his cell bars ‘ he stole to feed his family.’” War Lords is an important painting for Travis, in particular, utilizing stylized figures, animated motion and an intriguing layered iconography. It encapsulates practices of American Regionalism, with figurative imagery of a tumultuous war-torn time, and simultaneously captures a moment when the political flavor of the time influenced artists to paint compositions that had never been attempted before. Travis tightly renders each figure, in a style reminiscent of Thomas Hart Benton, yet whimsical clouds connect and move between the layered vignettes. Olin Travis was a teacher of many members in the Dallas Nine group of artists. A link that was expressed in a Texas Regional figurative style, displayed here in a rare and mature period from this oeuvre. War Lords fits into this a distinct time and place, unique in American Art, capturing a significant moment in Texas art. EXHIBITIONS:

Walker Gallery, New York, NY in 1940; Mortimer Levitt Gallery, New York, NY; Private Collection Austin, TX, current The Holand, Arkansas native, Everett Spruce came to Dallas after Olin Travis saw his drawings while in Arkansas. Travis awarded Spruce a scholarship to the Dallas Art Institute, where Spruce studied from 19261929. In 1931 he took a position at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts as a gallery assistant. In 1932 Spruce exhibited at the Dallas Public Art Gallery at Fair Park. It was at this show, that the Art Digest, America’s leading art magazine at the time, dubbed Spruce and eight other artists the “Dallas Nine” as noted visionary artists of the time.

Spruce went on to teach art at the University of Texas, Austin from 1940-1974, where he was chair of the department from 1949-51. This painting was executed in his first year teaching in the department. This marked a time when the department was taking shape from the modern art influences of those who created the cutting edge department: Loren Mozely and Ward Lockwood. The painting went on to be exhibited at the Hudson D. Walker Gallery in New York and later at Mortimer Levitt Gallery in New York.

New York City native, Seymour Fogel went on to study at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Art Students League under Leon Kroll and George Brandt Bridgeman where he mastered realism and executing the human form. Diego Rivera took him on as an assistant to complete a mural at Rockefeller Center. In the 1930’s Fogel traversed the country by train rendering imagery from the Great Depression. These works have landed in collections such as the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Ogden Collection in New Orleans, LA. The Works Progress Administration commissioned Fogel for several projects in New York, Washington D.C., Minnesota and Arizona. As a result, his figurative works from the 1930’s focused on social realism. In 1946 he was asked to join the art department at UT, Austin where he joined the ranks of forward thinking modernist painters. This first decade of modernist outpouring included 6 series: pastiche, mother and child, seraphic, limestone, flagellant and multi-style. This painting fits in the “pastiche” style, conveying styles of his greatest influences of this time both cubist Pablo Picasso and rectilinear, Piet Mondrian; however not a direct copy, Fogel draws on both to create his own style. This is his first foray into modernism, which Fogel mastered in this period and beyond. Dallas artist, Haddad received formal art training under William Palmer in New York; then under Otis Dozier for 6 years in the late 1940â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s while at SMU; she went on to study with Hans Hofmann from 1956-70. She studied at the Art Students League and in Woodstock, NY and in Paris, France. She exhibited across the country including at the National Columbia Painting Biennial in 1957; received the Houston Museum Award in 1957; exhibited at the Delgado Museum in 1959; the 65th Annual for Western Art in Denver, CO in 1961; and at the Denver Museum Invitational in 1969; and at the Dallas County Show at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts in 1958.

Dallas artist, John Ashley Bellamy received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Notre Dame and later his M.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon Institute in 1967. He then studied in an art program in Europe for 5 years. He received scholarships from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship, the Kante Neal Kinley Scholarship and the Greenshields Fellowship from Canada. While abroad he exhibited in one-man exhibitions in Rome, Paris and Berlin. He returned to Dallas in 1972. In 1974 he started serving as the Chairman of the Board to Peoples, Ideas and Elements, a visual arts program in Dallas. Bellamy acquired the Methodist Episcopal church in East Dallas in the 1970’s and turned it into his studio space he called, “Moon Mansion” which was also used to host storied elaborate performance art parties for a period of time.
