The Challenge and the Hope IPR/WIPB programs highlight responses to cancer By John Strauss, interim general manager
A
bout 8 million Americans have a history of cancer, a diagnosis so frightening that the disease has earned its own grim shorthand—“the Big C.” But if one antidote to fear is knowledge, a pair of Ball State public media programs may offer both comfort and encouragement. WIPB-TV and Indiana Public Radio are planning local programs, community engagement, online resources and social media all focused on the landmark film, Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The Emperor of all Maladies. The six-hour film airs on WIPB March 30, 31 and April 1 at 9 p.m. Locally, the campaign begins with an eight-part radio series, Stan’s Journey, featuring the experiences of IPR newsman Stan Sollars, who shares his five-month successful battle against esophageal cancer. Stan uses his trademark humor and straightforward storytelling approach to carry listeners from the examining room through the highs and lows of treatment. Even those without a previous interest in the disease may find themselves drawn to the story of a man, his friends and family summoning the strength to confront a lifechanging event. Grim faces at the hospital It all began last July when Stan started having acid reflux symptoms. “I tried one of the acid-reducing
medicines you can get over the counter, but nothing seemed to help, so I went back and my doctor said, ‘Let’s get you ‘scoped.’” A mass was discovered in his esophagus and was determined to be malignant. “At that point there was a bunch of grim faces in the ER. When you get something like that it’s not a pretty sight, and usually the outcome is not good,” he recalled. But in December, Stan was pronounced free from cancer—after months of fear, chemo and radiation treatments and support from his wife and friends. The story of those weeks of tension and hope make up Stan’s Journey. Campaign includes broadcasts, other media Stan’s Journey runs on IPR each Tuesday and Thursday at the end of Morning Edition, beginning Jan. 27 at 8:49 a.m. and ending Feb. 19. Also during the community engagement campaign: • IPR’s Community Connection will spotlight Little Red Door, a local resource center for cancer patients, in March. • WIPB’s Wellness Matters will air live a cancer call-in program in April. • WIPB will air short television segments telling the stories of local cancer patients and survivors. • WIPB & Little Red Door will host workshops to educate teens about breast and testicular cancer screening. • A companion website with additional information and resources is available at wipb.org/cancer.
