“Rare INdiana Finds” exhibit opens By Michelle Kinsey, Community Engagement Coordinator

More than 90 photos were entered in the “Rare INdiana Finds” Instagram Photo Contest. Fifteen of those photos have been chosen for an exhibit that will open in January at Kennedy Library in Muncie. Participants were asked to snap a photo of something in nature they don’t see every day. The results were nothing short of breathtaking, from tiny frogs to large longhorns, delicate dewdrops to vibrant flowers. Artists chosen for the exhibition include Stephen Weddle, Sarah Weiss, Pam Barger, Joyce Miller, Brandon Wysong, Scott Neal, Kelly Denny, Marilyn Kaicy, Kelly Doumacos and Vicki Vardaman. Judges were Carl Schafer of Gordy’s Fine Art and Framing, award-winning nature photographer Marvin Groves, and Ball State University biology professor Tim Carter. “I was so impressed with the large number of amazing photos submitted,” Carter said. “Even some of the photos that were not technically perfect, the amazing places and creatures that people got to experience was fantastic. It was also great to see how people found beauty in some relatively normal places.” The public is invited to meet the photographers during a reception 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 13 at the library, 1700 W. McGalliard Road. Exhibit partners are Gordy’s Fine Art and Framing and Muncie Public Library. “Rare INdiana Finds” is part of WIPB’s Rare INdiana project, which

focused on rare, endangered and threatened species in Indiana. The project was made possible with a grant from WGBH, in conjunction with the PBS program “RARE – Creatures of the Photo Ark,” which premiered in July on WIPB. WIPB and its partners also created a 30-minute special, RARE INDIANA: PROTECTING OUR SMALLEST HOOSIERS, that aired on WIPB in December, and offered digital content, nature walks and much more. Be sure to visit Kennedy Library throughout the month of January to see the “Rare INdiana Finds” exhibit. For more information, contact Community Engagement Coordinator Michelle Kinsey at (765) 285-5887. For more “Rare” opportunities, go to www. wipb.org/rare-indiana

PBS Announces New Late-Night Programming Two new programs have joined the WIPB late night weekday schedule: AMANPOUR ON PBS at 11 p.m. (debuted in Dec.) and BEYOND 100 DAYS / BBC WORLD NEWS begins Jan. 2 at 11:30 p.m. Featuring conversations with global leaders and decision makers on the issues affecting the world today, “AMANPOUR ON PBS adds to the long tradition of public affairs programming that has been a hallmark of public media for decades,” says PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger. CNN Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour has earned every major television journalism award, including eleven News and Documentary Emmy Awards, four Peabody Awards, two George Polk Awards, three duPont-Columbia Awards and the Courage in Journalism Award. She has received nine honorary degrees, has been named a CBE and was this year inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. She is an honorary citizen of Sarajevo and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Freedom of the Press and the Safety of Journalists. BEYOND 100 DAYS, the acclaimed BBC World News nightly public affairs will air weeknights Monday-Thursday, with BBC WORLD NEWS, a half hour of the top global news stories of the day, filling the time slot on Fridays. BEYOND 100 DAYS is hosted by Katty Kay in the United States and Christian Fraser in the UK. With President Trump making headlines each

day in the White House, the UK rapidly moving towards its exit from the EU and nearly daily tensions as North Korea tests its long-range missiles, BEYOND 100 DAYS cuts to the heart of the seismic stories changing the global political landscape. Katty Kay, presenter of BEYOND 100 DAYS, said: “The past year has been a time of upheaval in the western world, unparalleled in my career. I’ve been extremely proud to cover it all on BEYOND 100 DAYS, and now I’m excited to bring the program to American viewers on PBS. This program provides a unique global take on President Trump, Brexit and U.S. leadership around the world. I anchor from Washington, and my colleague Christian Fraser has the view from London. There is just too much happening — on both sides of the Atlantic — not to dedicate a whole program to this extraordinary time we are living in.” Editor’s Note: As of presstime, there still was not a replacement announced for the weekday midnight timeslot.

Gershwin’s Magic Key is an entertaining theatrical symphony concert about the extraordinary life and musical masterpieces of one of the greatest American composers of all time! The story tells of a chance meeting on the streets of New York City between a poor newspaper boy and the great American composer, George Gershwin. The orchestra magically weaves Gershwin’s greatest hits into the drama as the master composer shares historical anecdotes about his life and musical passion. MUNCIE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
