Strauss returning to BSU journalism department IPR/WIPB Interim General Manager John Strauss is returning to Ball State’s Journalism Department effective June 1. “I want to thank John for graciously accepting a temporary assignment to assist IPR and WIPB through this time of transition,” said Dan Lutz, associate vice president for Information Technology at Ball State. Strauss will teach journalism and serve as faculty adviser to the Daily News student newspaper, and will continue producing Indiana Weekend for WIPB and IPR. “This was a fast, fun 10 months that left me with an even greater appreciation for the incredible dedication of the station staffs and the members,” Strauss said. “After this close-up, insider’s look at the stations I feel very good about the potential for public media in East-Central Indiana. Seeing how hard these folks work, I’m a more enthusiastic member than ever.” According to Lutz, the search committee has determined the finalists for the general manager position. Those finalists will visit campus to meet with the IPR/WIPB staff, as well as the public, before a new general manager is named.

FRONTLINE creator: PBS alone in supporting in-depth TV journalism Public television changed former FRONTLINE executive producer David Fanning’s life at least twice. The first time happened after a young Fanning, living in London at the time, bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles in 1972. He walked into a public TV station. “And that is where I began my education as a filmmaker, as a journalist,” he said. “It’s been an enormous privilege. I am a child of public television. I believe deeply in its mission and in the idea of it.” That opportunity led to his creation of the Frontline investigative documentary series in 1983. He served in that role until June 1, when he became executive producer at large. Raney Aronson, Fanning’s deputy executive producer, was named to succeed him. Fanning, whose efforts netted more than 50 Emmys and 15 Peabody Awards later, still marvels at the role of public television. He recalled some of the highlights in a speech to the Economic Club of Indiana on May 7 in Indianapolis as a guest of WFYI-TV. Fanning remembers the critical moment in his early career when public television executives stood up to enormous pressure to kill a documentary critical of a Saudi prince. The program was called “Death of a Princess” and told the story of a young Saudi couple executed – the woman shot in the head – after they were accused of adultery. The British ambassador to Saudi Arabia was kicked out of the country. Fanning

recalled how the U.S. government put pressure on public television not to run the film. Mobil Oil took out a full-page ad in The New York Times denouncing it. PBS and WGBH refused to back down, he said. The Boston station rented space on a satellite to distribute the show if necessary. “And in that moment I knew that I worked in the right place. The film went out, the sky did not fall,” Fanning told the audience. To him it was a defining moment personally and for public television. “It’s said we can do things under extraordinary pressure, the kind of pressure - commercial, political - that would normally make broadcasters crumble.” The quality comes at a cost: programs can take six to nine months to produce. “You spend a lot of time in research and you go out and film,” he said. “People come back with 30 or 40 interviews. They sit in a room with transcripts of all those interviews and try to weave a tale out of it.” Creating high-quality journalism on stories of major public interest is challenging, but it’s not enough. “You’ve got to also keep an audience and try to get them to watch it. This is a theatrical event, after all,” Fanning said. The result is a complicated balance that most viewers never notice. “You have to put all the pieces that matter in the right places that both serve the narrative and also serve the public interest,” Fanning said. “That’s the great art and craft of it.” By John Strauss, interim general manager

WIPB honors local young writers It was quite the literary event – literally. The winners of this year’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest gathered May 14 at Minnetrista for awards, big-screen debuts and plenty of cake. “It was a true experience that really happened to me,” said third-grader Jessica Littleford of her first place submission, “Five Days of Sanibel.” That would include the part of the poem that called out her dad for snoring – a lot. Second-grader Aubrey Couch, who wrote a winning story about an ogre who wanted to be a fairy godmother, said she chose that story because it portrayed someone differently than you would expect. “Ogres are kind of scary and you wouldn’t think they would want to be a fairy godmother and want to help other people out,” she said. “Their dream would probably be to hurt someone’s feelings.” More than 75 creative entries were received from local children and 11 winners were chosen for first place, second place and third place recognitions. Each was given a certificate and a PBS KIDS bag filled with goodies, including books, of course. Lyn Whitesell of MutualBank, the Writers Contest sponsor, also handed each first place winner an award of $50. First-grader Nicholas Wiley laughed and pointed as his story about moving to a new neighborhood unfolded on the big screen before the awards were handed out. All of the stories were displayed page-by-page on the screen, complete with narration. The first place winners were “The Monster Garden” by 6-year-old kindergarten student Maddie Autry of Marion; “A Tale of Two Friends” by 7-year-old first-grader Jayden Phelps of Yorktown; “Pugsly’s Dream” by 8-year-old second-grader Aubrey Couch of

Muncie, and “Five Days of Sanibel” by 9-yearold third-grader Jessica Littleford of Muncie. These first place winners will advance to the national level of the contest, an annual competition for children in kindergarten through third grade. Other winners: SECOND PLACE – “Ten Reasons I Know God Loves Me” by Allison Burge, kindergarten, Muncie; “A Kids Guide to a New Neighborhood” by Nicholas Wiley, first grade, Muncie; “The Sensitive Hunter” by Molly Piazza, second grade, Muncie, and “Everyday Adventures” by Xyza Keller, third grade, Muncie. THIRD PLACE – “Super Baby” by Ruth Sherck, first grade, Muncie; “Nature Poems” by Sophie Glueck, second grade, Muncie, and “Jacob’s Story Problems” by Jacob Wright, third grade, Farmland. — Michelle Kinsey, community engagement coordinator
