WIPB announces 2013 PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest Local children in grades K-3 encouraged to submit original stories
P
BS KIDS GO! Writers Contest is designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through handson, active learning. The Contest, made possible in part by financial support from Easy Student Publishing encourages children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity by submitting their own original stories and illustrations. Beginning January 14, children in East Central Indiana can submit their entries to the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. WIPB will select local winners and award prizes in the spring of 2013. Local first place winners will advance
to the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries. National winners will be announced during the summer of 2013. Muncie’s own Edward Krzemienski, a first grader at East Washington Elementary School, was a 2012 PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest National Winner. His story, “Jim’s Crazy Bus Week,” along with more 2012 winning stories may be seen at pbskids.org/ writerscontest. For 2013 contest rules and entry forms, visit wipb.org or call 800-252-9472.

Season 3 Premiere Masterpiece “Downton Abbey” Season 3 The Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate. Shirley MacLaine joins the much-loved cast, which includes Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Penelope Wilton and many others. “No family is ever what it seems from the outside,” observes Smith’s shrewd character.

Sunday, January 6, 9pm Wedding guests descend on Downton Abbey, where disasters — large and small — threaten. One is Cora’s freewheeling American mother, who tries to loosen up her in-laws.

Part Two: 1838-1854
Tuesday, January 15, 9pm Watch how the five principals intersect and affect the anti-slavery movement. The divide between North and South deepens, touching off a crisis that is about to careen out of control.
Part Three: 1854-Emancipation and Victory
Tuesday, January 22, 9pm The battle between pro-slavery and free-soil contingents rises to fever pitch. In December 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment is ratified, banning slavery in all states — forever.

Thursday, January 17 at 9pm Upon hearing the tragic news of MLK, Jr.’s assassination, Robert F. Kennedy risked his own life to deliver one of the great political speeches of the 20th century. By keeping his promise to speak, Kennedy helped Indianapolis avert the violence that swept the rest of the country.

Friday, January 25 at 9pm Two episodes combine history, biography, iconic performances, new analysis and the personal passion of its celebrated hosts to tell the story behind the stories of Shakespeare’s greatest plays: “Macbeth,” “Twelfth Night” and “As You Like It.” Each episode combines interviews, film and television clips and illustrative excerpts.
