Van Dyke Reflects on 23 Years
After 23 years as an employee and member of WIPB Public Television, general manager Alice Van Dyke announced her retirement at the end of June. She recently sat down with WIPB student marketing assistant Zach Groth and reflected on her years at WIPB.
A
lice Van Dyke began her career at WIPB as underwriting representative, then was sales manager before being promoted to general manager in 1996. In that time, she saw many accomplishments at the station. “When I started at WIPB, we were still producing the internationallyacclaimed The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross,” Van Dyke said. “Getting to know Bob and working with The Joy of Painting will forever be a highlight of my career.” The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a station focus on early childhood education and outreach under Van Dyke’s guidance with the implementation of WIPB’s PBS Ready To Learn Service. “We still believe that local outreach and service to the community is our most important point of differentiation in this highly competitive media landscape,” Van Dyke said. One memory that will resonate with Van Dyke for years to come is when WIPB made the transition from analog to digital in 2009. Through months of hard-work and preparation, Van Dyke and the WIPB team went from a 500-foot tower to an 800-foot tower, expanding the station’s coverage area greatly and giving a better
quality product to more people than ever. “I got to actually flip the switch,” Van Dyke said. “It was very exciting realizing we were able to reach so many more people in Indiana with our television programs.” Another major change Van Dyke was responsible for was incorporating online bidding to the station’s long-running television auction, Telesale. “Watching the growth of online bidding in Telesale has been very exciting. I can’t wait to see what’s next as this community favorite event evolves even more in the future,” said Van Dyke. Change has been the common theme of Van Dyke’s time at WIPB. The technology has changed, the talented staff has changed and some of the programs have changed. But one thing remains constant: Van Dyke’s passion for the WIPB mission to educate, inform and inspire people is as strong today as it was when she started her career. “I am excited for this new chapter in my life and incredibly thankful for 23 wonderful years at WIPB.” Van Dyke went on to say that she would miss the daily routine, the people and everything for which WIPB stands. But she’s not outing herself completely; you can depend on Van Dyke’s continued support of the station as a member and now, a station volunteer.
To send Alice a note of congratulations on her retirement, email avandyke@bsu.edu.
