Our planet is changing. We are aware of the impact we have and the decisions we make which affect the world we hand over to our children and future generations. We need to show our commitment to true innovation for a better world, by not always putting profit first. Imagination is one of the greatest assets we have and, when we lead with it, we can solve problems which seem too great to overcome. Imagination is a force for good that should drive our direction in finding every possible way to reduce our consumption and impact. Innovation isn’t about being the best. It’s about us being better.

Between now and 2035 the French energy giant EDF has plans to invest $9.9bn in battery storage systems. “Africa is certainly a priority market for us,” explained a company spokesman. EDF is planning to develop an additional 10GW of energy storage projects around the world by 2035, on top of the 5GW already operated by the company. The French company has said the move represents an investment of $9.9bn over the 2020-2035 period. New facilities likely to be delivered over the next 12 months include at least three battery storage facilities and an extension to battery/solar initiatives in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. EDF said it is also increasing its research and development capabilities for energy storage, doubling investment to $86.5mn for the 2018-2020 period. The company’s EDF Nouveaux business will also allocate $18.5mn over the next two years – one third AFRICA IS KEY MARKET of its investments – to projects and start-ups linked to storage and FOR EDF WHEN IT COMES distribution flexibility. EDF chairman and chief TO BATTERY STORAGE executive Jean-Bernard Levy said: SYSTEMS.” “Electricity storage technologies have a potential to radically change the energy sector.” This month Shell has announced that it is backing one of the world’s biggest battery projects in support of renewable power. Shell Energy Europe Limited (SEEL) has agreed a multiyear power offtake deal that enables the installation of Europe’s biggest battery. The 100-megawatt (MW) Minety power storage project in south-west England, which is backed by China Huaneng Group and Chinese sovereign wealth fund CNIC, is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The two 50-MW batteries will enable SEEL and Shell subsidiary Limejump to optimise the use of renewable power in the area. “Projects like this will be vital for balancing a nation’s electricity demand and supply as wind and solar power play bigger roles in powering our lives,” David Wells, Vice President of SEEL, said. “Batteries are uniquely suited to optimising power supplies as countries move towards net-zero carbon systems.” Batteries are expected to play a key part in the transition to a low-carbon energy system, especially in Africa, by absorbing excess energy when supply exceeds demand in some areas, then supplying that power to the grid when needed.

IN BRIEF AZITO POWER PLANT IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE TO GET GE TURBINE ENGIE AND NAREVA CONSORTIUM TO BUILD 120MW POWER PLANT IN TUNISIA A consortium led by ENGIE and NAREVA has been declared preferred bidder for the construction of the Gafsa photovoltaic power plant, which was launched as an international tender by the Tunisian Ministry of Mines and Energy and STEG (Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz). Responsible for developing, designing, financing, building, operating and maintaining the 120 MWp Gafsa photovoltaic power plant over a period of 20 years from commissioning, the consortium has invested significantly in this construction plan. This major project is one of the first solar Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects in Tunisia and is part of the renewable energy sector’s development programme which is aiming to achieve 30 per cent of the country’s renewable energy production by 2030. The Gafsa plant is expected to supply more than 100,000 Tunisian homes per year and helps to avoid 150,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. This business venture is the first collaboration between ENGIE and NAREVA in Tunisia, after a joint experience in Morocco with the construction of the 300MW Tarfaya wind farm, one of the largest wind parks in Africa. The EU is already considering awarding priority status to an underwater cable linking Tunisia with Italy, and TuNur expects construction work on a €5bn plant to begin by late 2020 in southwest Tunisia.

OFF-GRID SOLAR MARKET IN AFRICA IS WORTH $24BN, SUGGESTS REPORT Kleos Advisory, an Nigeria-based business consultancy, has issued a report suggesting that Africa’s off-grid solar systems market has an annual potential of US$24bn. This is the direct result of long-term neglect resulting in insufficient electrification and access to the grid in Africa, it suggests. According to the study, around five million pay-as-you-go home solar systems have been sold to Africa since 1996 and the market is accelerating, with over one million systems sold over the first six months of 2019. According to Kleos Advisory’s data, households with grid access spend an average of US$200 per year on electricity, and with over 120

www.gmp.uk.com

million African households still without access to power, this adds up to $24bn in potential commercial value. The new study is called ‘The grid won’t connect Africa, but solar can’. The results feature some radical conclusions: “Given the ability of solar-fintech solutions to deliver power to African households along with the affordable financing to pay for it, solar could be the breakthrough technology that finally connects Africa’s vast off-grid communities,” - this is the thrust of the report. “The combination of solar and fintech is driving an economic transformation in Africa, making the ‘unbankable’ bankable and embedding African consumers in the digital economy.” Azuri CEO Simon Bransfield-Garth comments: “For African countries, energy is a critical need to support rapid economic development. Solar power has the ability to reach the most isolated households and deliver life-changing technology.”

Abidjan-based Azito Energie SA has selected GE to provide gas turbine technology and services for Azito phase IV power plant, located in the Yopougon district of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. Under the terms of the contract, GE will supply its GT13E2 gas turbine in combined-cycle configuration. Additionally, GE will supply one heat recovery steam generator, one steam turbine generator, condenser and associated systems and maintenance services for 20 years. GE’s GT13E2 gas turbine delivers power and performance while offering a flexible extended maintenance concept that reduces operating costs while saving fuel. Once the phase IV extension is complete, the power plant is expected to generate approximately 710MW.

RWANDA’S US$123M POWER SUBSTATION

A new high voltage 188 MVA substation and its related transmission network has been inaugurated in the Rwanda capital Kigali. The Shango substation is part of the NELSAP Regional Interconnection Project involving Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, DRC and Burundi. The Rwandan element involves the construction of 286 km of 220 kV lines, three substations and the upgrade of two substations at an estimated cost of US$123m. The African Development Fund, part of the African Development Bank Group, contributed US$42m of the total project cost. The largest substation in the country - the Shango substation - has been designed to play a key role in the management of electricity dispatching services in Rwanda and a routing node for electricity trading between the East African neighbours. Martha Phiri, the African Development Bank’s Rwanda manager, reports that the Shango substation and its network will provide the country’s with excess power estimated to be in the region of 1040 MW from the regional market, reducing its reliance on expensive fossil-fuel generated power. Rwanda is currently pursuing an ambitious target to achieve affordable, reliable and universal access to electricity by 2024 in line with its government’s National Strategy for Transformation. Ms Phiri says that the African Development Bank’s strategy for Rwanda has two pillars: to invest in energy and water infrastructure to enable inclusive and green growth, and to FUTURE-PROOF DIESEL ENGINES develop skills to promote high value-added economic activities and economic transformation. 15 MW FOR AFRICA PROJECTS

An alliance between Schneider Electric Solar Spain and Qbera Capital has meant that around 15MW in power projects will soon be rolled-out across Mali, Ghana and Burkina Faso. Additional deployments of over 60MW will further target six countries, reports Schneider Electric.

S

chneider Electric Solar Spain, the Spanish entity of the Schneider Electric solar business division, has entered into a strategic alliance with Qbera Capital, an asset management & independent advisory firm, to further support solar energy growth across selected frontier and emerging markets. The Qbera-Schneider Electric Solar alliance provides a distinctive technical and financial proposition – further facilitating transition to net-zero carbon and specific UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many of the 650 million people in Africa without access to electricity live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Often the biggest hurdle to deploying renewable energy in this region is the lack of a holistic approach including financing and technology. Following recent successes in the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) segment, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, the alliance provides corporates with a one-stop solution integrating technical, financing, digital and equipment solutions designed to support a clean energy transition. The first round of projects of 15 MW will be rolled-out across Mali, Ghana and Burkina Faso. Additional deployments of over 60 MW will further target six countries. The alliance also deepens both organization’s commitment to achieving the United Nations SDG’s.

“WITH THIS ALLIANCE, WE ARE REMOVING ONE OF THE BIGGEST ROADBLOCKS IN GREEN ENERGY DEPLOYMENT, ALIGNING CUSTOMER NEEDS, ADVISORY, TECHNOLOGY AND FINANCING.” - ROBERT IMMELÉ, CEO, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC SOLAR

12

AFRICA POWER NEWS

Both parties have successfully focused on financing and developing solar energy and energy efficiency projects in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA), with the aim of converting as much of SSA as possible to clean energy sources. “I am very excited about this new business model that has already materialized into the first success,” said Robert Immelé, CEO and chairman of Schneider Electric Solar. He concludes: “With this alliance, we are removing one of the biggest roadblocks in green energy deployment, aligning customer needs, advisory, technology and financing.” The developing nations of Africa are key markets for the application of renewable energy technology.

Currently, many nations already have small-scale solarprojects in operation providing energy to urban and rural populations. This type of energy production is especially useful in remote locations because of the cost of transporting electricity from power plants. Access to energy is essential for the reduction of poverty and promotion of economic growth. Communication technologies, education, industrialisation, agricultural improvement and expansion of municipal water systems all require abundant, reliable, & cost-effective energy access. solar.schneider-electric.com

RELIABLE PARTS AND PARTNERS FOR DC GEN SETS THE PERFECT SOLUTION IS ALWAYS THE PRODUCT OF MORE FACTORS: GOOD DESIGN, QUALITY PRODUCTS, SKILLED PARTNERS. For each sector whose goal is to offer solutions to its customers, there is a special formula to ensure the success of the own products to be introduced into the market. The good design of the generator set may not be enough whenever this is not combined with the choice for reliable components and qualified suppliers. Indeed, the experience of the supplier can be crucial once it becomes necessary to share opinions with a partner, before giving a physical shape to the original ideas. This is the case, for example, of DC generator sets specially designed for telecommunication applications. It has been a long time since SINCRO, a brand of Soga Energy Team group focused on energy solutions, has been paying particular attention to the evolution of the generating sets market and to the many application variants, on which manufacturers are called upon to provide their support. In the world scenario, Sincro was one of the first in offering a complete range of alternators ranging 60A to 800A, equipped with integrated rectifiers and digital AVRs to perform at fixed or variable speed. Since 2012, Sincro has been working to keep improving the technology by reaching 28 completely Made in Italy models, in 2 or 4 pole configuration, providing 24 VDC or 48 VDC in the telecommunications. Due to their reliability, the same products have also found acceptance in sectors such as military, railways, construction and in particular applications like auxiliary power units on vehicles, LED lighting towers, battery chargers, emergency backup units, power supplies for the monitoring of safety warnings, alarms and control devices: practically, wherever a reliable supply of DC output is deemed necessary. Sincro DC alternators are equipped with DBC1 Digital AVR, specially designed to protect the generator sets from any current overload, while maintaining a constant output voltage of 24 VDC or 48 VDC within a wide operating speed range. Voltage is adjustable over a wide scale every time the alternator operates at variable speed.

sogaenergyteam.com/sincro

The 2-poles units have an operating speed range from 2,900 to 4,200 rpm, while the 4-poles ones from 1,400 to 2,300 rpm. Sincro DC alternators, with rectified 9-phase voltage winding, ensure very low ripple, in compliance with the standards requiring low line disturbance on the equipment. The same alternator fan also cools the integrated rectifier. This solution highly guarantees a very compact design to the alternator, contributing to a simpler and faster installation into the generating sets.

GENSETS FOR THE CENTRAL AFRICA REPUBLIC

C

larke Energy has provided four highly robust Kohler-SDMO KD3500-F diesel generator sets to Tunisian-based TRAGEDEL to power the Central African Republic electricity network. This project is an important milestone for Clarke Energy as it will be the first reference in Central African Republic and its largest diesel power plant in Africa outside hundreds of units of Jenbacher power generator sets already installed and running across the continent on gas. The project will add 10MW to the country’s capital city electricity network, hence improve the living conditions of the population as Bangui suffers several hours of interrupted power on a daily basis. and the new units will also offer the necessary flexibility to implement heavy overhaul maintenance on an existing obsolete hydroelectric generating plant. The generator sets are built in 40-foot weatherproof containers which meet the strictest criteria in terms of performance, soundproofing, robustness and ease of maintenance. The base of the container is designed to have internal retention, able to retain a possible fuel, oil or coolant leak. The Kohler-SDMO’s ‘Contenergy’ container concept will offer a special adaptation for the customer’s needs. Thanks to their standard size, Contenergy containers are easily transportable and, once on site, installation is simplified on an external concrete slab with a relatively small footprint. Kohler-SDMO premium performance engine KD3500-F produces 2.5MW nominal electric power and runs very smoothly thanks to the engine’s conception and integral vibrator isolation mounted between components and skid. The engine is also characterised by low fuel consumption thanks to a high common rail injection technology and also a smaller footprint as a result of high power density.

The power plant will run as baseload or peaking and the electrical energy generated shall be injected into the public utility grid, owned and managed by ENERCA. Clarke Energy’s ability to manage the project turnkey while meeting project specifications and the installation footprint of the package were important selection criteria for TRAGEDEL. Clarke Energy’s SDMO package was also selected as a result of best compromise power/footprint, installation constraints, long maintenance intervals, availability, reliability, simplified maintenance, competitive price and best lead time. TRAGADEL has acted as as the EPC contractor for the project which has been funded by the Saudi Fund for Development (FSD), under the umbrella of the CAR Ministry of

Economy, Planning and Co-operation. The KD3500-F genset is equipped with a KOHLER KD Series engine type KD83V16-5CFS. Performance class: G3 Frequency: 50 Hz Voltage: 400/230 V Standard Control Panel: M80-D The generator sets are designed in accordance to ISO8528-5. The units are smooth running thanks to engine conception and integral vibration isolation mounts between components and skid. Low fuel consumption is due to a high technology common rail injection engine. The genset also features a smaller footprint thanks to a high power density, a low temperature starting capability and long maintenance intervals. www.clarke-energy.com

DIESEL-HYBRID POWER PLANT

Q1 2020

NIGER’S HYBRID POWER PLANT A consortium composed of three companies - Vergnet of France and Indian companies Sterling and Wilson and SNS Solar Power Engineering & Technology - has won the contract to build a 6 MW power plant in Niger, a nation with one of the lowest power access rates in Africa.

N

iger, a country with one of the lowest power access rates in Africa, has plans to build a 6 MW solar-diesel hybrid power plant. The government of the Republic of Niger awarded a consortium - consisting of French company Vergnet and Indian companies Sterling and Wilson and SNS Solar Power Engineering & Technology - to develop the plant. The power plant will be located in the country’s largest city Agadez. The facility will consist of solar panels linked together by inverters capable of producing 13 MWp along with diesel generators. The project will also include an upgrade for the city of Agadez’s electrical network which suffers from power transmission issues. Furthermore, the improvements includes the electrification of a neighbouring town, Tibinitene. Niger currently has one of the lowest rates of access to power in Africa. Among its population of around 20 million people only around 15% of them have access to electricity. Still relying mainly on power imports from neighbouring Nigeria, the country has an installed power generation capacity of just 140 MW. This means that once its solar projects are finalised, they will represent almost half of the national power generation assets. According to the agreement, Vergnet, Sterling and Wilson and SNS will operate and maintain the plant for a period of two years. The consortium is also expected to provide project management assistance and institutional support to accompany and train engineers and technicians from Niger’s electricity company, Nigelec. The training will focus on photovoltaic technologies to enable engineers to operate large-scale solar power plants in the short term. The project is being funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union who are each investing US$18m. Once completed, the hybrid power plant is expected to meet the country’s electricity demand - currently largely unsatisfied - and also reduce the carbon content of electricity in the northern zone. Niger is using renewable energy technologies to solve its energy needs. It set up the National Solar Energy Centre (Centre National d’Énergie Solaire – CNES), which was originally founded to undertake applied research in various aspects of renewable energies.

AFRICA POWER NEWS

In 2017 Niger’s cabinet ratified an agreement with the International Development Association (IDA), which is part of the World Bank, for a €42.7 million (US$50.3 million) finance package. This has financed the Niger Solar Electricity Access Project (NESPA), an initiative aimed at bringing solar power to rural communities. The project consists of four components: market development of stand-alone PV installations; rural electrification through service-based solar hybrid mini-grids; PV hybridization of isolated thermal mini-grids operated by the country’s utility Nigerien Electricity Society (NIGELEC); and implementation support and technical assistance. The project is being implemented by NIGELEC and Niger’s Rural Electrification Agency (ANPER). According to the World Bank, electricity access in Niger is below 1% in rural areas, while in urban areas its rate ranges between 20% and 40% in smaller cities and reaches approximately 50% in Niamey, the capital city.

In 2016, the country’s peak demand reached only 260 MW, although its population was estimated at 20.7 million. Niger’s power system is made up of four grids which are interconnected with Nigeria and several diesel-based isolated grids, operated by NIGELEC. According to CNES the installed capacity of off-grid solar systems grew from only 416 kW in 2000 to around 5.2 MW (located in 2,311 sites) in 2014. CNES estimates that 39% of this capacity is serving telecommunications, while 15% is for households. NIGELEC had a monopoly on Niger’s power supply until May 2016, when the government decided to liberalize the energy market with the Electricity Act. The new law has allowed the involvement of the private sector and the creation of ANPER, as well as an energy regulator. www.vergnet.com www.sterlingwilson.ae www.snssolarpower.com

THREE GAS TURBINE GENERATOR PACKAGES FOR BPL IN NIGERIA, WEST AFRICA MAN Energy Solutions recently delivered three gas turbine generator packages to BelemaOil Producing Limited (BPL) in Nigeria, West Africa. These incorporate the single-shaft MGT6000 gas turbine technology and have been designed to provide around 20MW to a power plant which supplies heat and power to BPL oil & gas facilities 30 miles southwest of Port Harcourt in Nigeria.

B

elemaoil Producing Ltd (BPL was registered in 2012 to explore, develop and produce hydrocarbons in Nigeria’s competitive energy sector where the oil and gas industry has been the mainstay of the national economy. Belemaoil operates OML 55 which currently has five oil fields: Robertkiri, Idama, Jokka, Inda, and the Belema/Belema Field (unitized with Shell). The company primarily operates in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria and has a number of strong partners across the globe. The BPL power plant which is located 30 miles (48 km) south west of Port Harcourt in Nigeria now relies on three MAN Energy packages - with the proven single-shaft MGT6000 gas turbine technology - which have been designed to provide around 20 MW. The MGT6000 series is one of the world´s most modern industrial gas turbine in its power class. Based on experience and design skills gathered over decades MAN Energy Solutions developed in-house a modern gas turbine series which combines the advantages of heavy duty and aeroderivate gas turbines. The twin shaft design (MGT6000-2S) has primarily been developed for mechanical drive applications while the single shaft turbine (MGT6000-1S) is employed purely in the power generation industry.

Features and Benefits * High efficiency * Excellent part-load behaviour * Heavy duty gas turbine, i.e. very robust * Low emission combustion chambers with extreme low emission values: NOx 30 mg/Nm³ * Long major overhaul interval (40 000 EOH) * Modular design ensuring good accessibility for maintenance measures (e.g. 3 days standstill for gas turbine exchange). The turbine technology uses Dry Low Emission technology and natural gas as a low-emission fuel. The system also features specifically modified intake air-cooling in order to guarantee a flawless operation despite the high temperatures on site. The set-up comprising three gas turbines trains enables a flexible load profile for the operator. All trains are equipped with an ATU Box (Analytics Telemetrie Unit), which is connected to the new digital platform MAN CEON. The system collects and evaluates operating and sensor data and enables the customer to monitor the machine’s operation around the clock and easily request advice for remote support. “We were honoured to collaborate with CAI on this important power generation project in Nigeria. recently commissioned MGT gas turbines trains in China prove that the benefits of MAN’s technology solution are being recognized by the market,” says Sebastian Könning, project manager sales for gas turbines at MAN Energy Solutions. The order for MAN had been placed by American EPC and equipment exporter Combustion Associates Inc. (CAI). Together with Exterran Corporation, the company is responsible for the engineering, manufacturing and installation of the overall project. “We have seen the exceptional quality and performance of MAN MGT6000 gas turbines and were confident in placing our first order for them. This is the beginning of a long-term partnership between CAI and MAN and we plan to work together on other power projects in Africa, which is CAI’s key market,” said Mukund Kavia, CAI chairman. Dr. Sven-Hendrik Wiers, vice president gas turbines at MAN Energy Solutions, states: “Both low emissions and high efficiency are becoming increasingly important for gas turbines in the market. With the state-of-the-art MGT technology, our company is able to fulfill these demands and provide a gas turbine family optimized for decentral, flexible and at the same time highly-efficient power generation solution with minimum emissions.” The gensets were delivered on November 2019. All gas turbines are manufactured in Oberhausen (Germany) and the packaging was completed at MAN’s Chinese workshop in Changzhou. Power Generation Many industrial processes are energy intensive. Thus often leads to an independent on-site power plant. To increase the efficiency of these power plants, processes can be combined to recover and utilize the heat energy in hot exhaust gases. Furthermore awareness of the need to save resources and reduce the greenhouse effect are the main drivers for cogeneration as wellknown as Combined Heat and Power (CHP). MAN gas turbines are the heart of such power plants. Mechanical Drive Robust and reliable industrial gas turbines from MAN Energy Systems are driving compressors and pumps in many countries around the world. They are installed across a variety of upstream and midstream operations in the oil and gas industry, for instance, in pipeline compressor stations or on offshore oil production units.

IMPROVING ALTERNATOR ELECTRICAL PERFORMANCE Leroy-Somer has released its latest technology innovation - AREP+ which is said to be an improvement on its auxiliary winding technology for the TAL alternator range, reports APN.

A

REP+ significantly improves the electrical performance of equipped alternators, including gains in motor starting capacity of up to 30%. AREP+ will be progressively offered on the Leroy-Somer TAL industrial alternator range from November 2019. The new AREP+ system uses the output voltage of the main stator as H1 and a single auxiliary winding H3 inserted in selected slots of the main stator. The combination of these inputs is then used to power the controller, combining the power of a traditional Shunt system with the reliability and control level of an AREP system. Under the same conditions, more power is taken to supply the regulator, which increases the excitation capacity. This excitation system is made possible by the improvements brought by Leroy-Somer to its range of regulators such as the R180 or the D350. The new regulatrors are able to process much higher voltage than with a standard AREP system without any risk for the excitation chain. The AREP+ system improves the electrical performance of equipped machines, especially during transient short circuit, load shedding or load impact phases, reports Leory Somer. As a result, the starting kVA performances are improved by up to 30% depending on the generator models. This level of performance is decisive in situations where generators are used in an industrial context where electric motors must be started. Because of its optimized design, the AREP+ technology also allows other performance improvements, says the manufacturer. The first of these is the accelerated response time of the excitation chain, with an observed decrease of 20 to 30%. The second development is a quicker startup of the excitation system, up to twice as fast, with a theoretical start possible from 20 Hz. TAL 044 200kVA.

“We are extremely satisfied with the performance of the AREP+ system,” said Wenbin Ding, Low Voltage Product Manager. “This new innovation is part of our commitment to offer reliable and efficient products with the TAL range, taking advantage of latest electric power generation technologies. It also proves that our strategy to grow our internal expertise around excitation systems is paying off.” During its development, the AREP+ system has been tested and subjected to a number of deforming loads. Under these conditions, the AREP + offers a remarkable level of performance, comparable to that which can be observed on a conventional AREP system. The AREP+ technology has been tested and used by some Leroy-Somer OEM customers for several months, and the first feedback from the field demonstrated satisfactory levels of performance and reliability. AREP + technology will be rolled out over the entire TAL range before the end of the year, and on the LSA range from the beginning of 2020. It replaces the current AREP technology, which will eventually be completely replaced.
