On the demand side, electricity consumption in Southeast Asia is projected to double by 2040; the annual growth rate of nearly 4% is twice as fast as the rest of the world. The share of electricity in final energy consumption is 18% today but this rises rapidly to 26% in 2040 and reaches the global average. Standing fourth in terms of electricity consumption within Asia, South Korea’s power usage averaged 17.70 billion kWh, according to figures updated monthly between January 1979 and September 2019. An estimated 45 million people in South East Asia are still without power today and many more continue to rely on solid biomass as a cooking fuel. China tops the electricity consumption list both in Asia and globally — using more than 6.3 trillion kilowatts of energy per hour (kWh). China’s two wide-area synchronous grids are the China Southern Power Grid and the State Grid. In 2005, the northern power grids were synchronized and later, in 2011, all the Chinese provinces were interlinked. According to the China Electricity THE DEMAND FOR Council, in the first four months of 2019 consumption of electricity in POWER IN SOUTH EAST China surpassed 2.23 trillion kWh, reflecting a 5.6% year-on-year ASIA CONTINUES TO increase. Electricity consumption for the month of April 2019 INCREASE amounted to 553.4 billion kWh EXPONENTIALLY. a year-on-year increase of 5.8%, as per the National Energy Administration figures. With the world’s second-largest population, India’s yearly consumption of 1.54 trillion kWh makes it the planet’s third-highest consumer of electricity behind China and the USA, and the second-biggest user in Asia. By 2030, this consumption is predicted to touch four trillion kWh. With an electricity sector dominated by fossil fuels such as coal, the Indian Government has started exploring investment opportunities in renewable energy sources — which include small hydro projects, biomass gasifiers, biomass power, urban and industrial waste power, solar and wind energy. By 2022, India plans to attain a capacity of 175 million kilowatts (kW), with its power consumption estimated to reach 1895 terawatt-hours (TWh). As of December 2019, the installed capacity of India’s national electric grid showed 368.69 gigawatts. Japan is the world’s fourth-largest coal consumer and the third-largest oil user. It is also the third-largest consumer of electricity in Asia — responsible for the annual consumption of 0.93 trillion kWh. Unlike the usual single national grid commonly associated with most industrialised countries, Japan distributes electricity by way of two separate grids — eastern and western.

SEAFLOAT POWER PLANT COULD BE THE ANSWER TO ASIA’S ENERGY SHORTAGES Following the successful delivery of four floating power plants to New York in 2019, it has been suggested that Asian-Pacific nations could invest in the technology to alleviate hard-pressed energy grids. Siemens’ SeaFloat power plants can be used as base load or emergency backup for existing power plants during peak loads or outages and to provide a fast power supply in the event of a humanitarian disaster. SeaFloat power plants can even be supplemented with a desalination plant to provide clean potable water that helps prevent disease. A wide range of gas turbine frames and combined cycle configurations are available so that an appropriate solution that meets specific requirements can be developed with customers. SeaFloat power plants can be moved to any site accessible by sea or major rivers and require almost no investment for land acquisition, reports Siemens. SeaFloat has been designed to be as small as possible, and it’s defined a new standard in power density. Because the plants’ construction and a large portion of commissioning are performed using standardised equipment under strictly controlled conditions in the world’s leading shipyards, a short lead time can be realized.

THE ASIA RENEWABLE ENERGY HUB LOCATED IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA The Asian Renewable Energy Hub will generate 26,000 MW of renewable energy in Western Australia. Up to 3,000 MW of generation capacity will be dedicated to large energy users in the Pilbara region, which could include new and expanded mines and downstream mineral processing. The bulk of the energy will be used for large scale production of green hydrogen products for domestic and export markets. From a 14,000-square kilometre initial land package, 6,500 square kilometres of land in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia were selected to accommodate 26,000 MW of wind turbines and solar photovoltaic panels. Outstanding wind and solar resource and large project scale will result in competitively priced renewable energy with a high capacity factor. Project development commenced in 2014 with a study of the entire north-west coast of Western Australia. Project land has been secured through the WA Department of Lands, the Traditional Owners are actively engaged and supportive, onshore and offshore development studies have been completed and a consortium of global renewable energy leaders has been assembled. The West Australian Government acknowledged the project’s potential and progress with Lead Agency Status in July 2018, and in October 2020 the first 15,000 MW stage of the project received environmental approval from the Western Australian Government. “The most important step in developing a project is finding the best site,” commented Alexander Tancock, Managing Director of InterContinental Energy. “We spent two years investigating the entire northwest coast of Australia, and found this incredible location.

FUEL CELLS

OCTOBER 2021

100 KW OF SOLID-OXIDE FUEL CELLS POWERED SOLELY BY HYDROGEN SENT TO ULSAN, KOREA

B

loom Energy, in collaboration with its Korean partner, SK Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., an affiliate of SK Group, has successfully deployed 100 kilowatts of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC) powered solely by hydrogen in Ulsan, South Korea, generating zero-carbon onsite electricity. Hydrogen fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electricity through a non-combustion electrochemical process, are increasingly recognized by climate experts and governments across the globe as an essential tool for full decarbonisation. Bloom Energy first announced its plans to enter the commercial hydrogen market in July 2020, which includes an intended 1 megawatt hydrogen-powered Energy Server installation with SK E&C by 2022. “This deployment in May 2021, marks a significant milestone not only for Bloom, but for the future of hydrogen-based power generation,” said KR Sridhar, founder, chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy. “While Bloom’s hydrogen story started more than two decades ago, it’s now the right market timing to introduce hydrogen-powered solutions and help countries meet their net-zero emissions goals. We’re proud of our partnership with SK E&C. Together, we are well-positioned to play an important role in the global hydrogen economy.” The SOFCs use hydrogen byproduct generated by SK Advanced to create power without CO2 emissions. The hydrogen-powered fuel cells are supplied, operated and maintained by Bloom Energy. Upon completion of the pilot project, Bloom Energy’s hydrogen SOFCs will support South Korea’s Changwon RE100 initiative, as well as many other projects. The RE100 is a global renewable energy initiative led by the Climate Group to accelerate the move toward zero-carbon electricity grids. In November 2020, Bloom Energy and SK E&C won a

12

INDEPENDENT POWER ASIA

competitive bid for the Changwon RE100 to supply Bloom Energy’s hydrogen-powered SOFCs and hydrogen electrolysers to an industrial complex also in Korea. “Bloom’s state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cell, which represents the pinnacle of power generation efficiency and safety, will allow us to provide clean electricity that will help Korea reach carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Jason Ahn, CEO of SK E&C. “We look forward to playing a leading role in the SK Group’s eco-friendly business expansion, as well as the Korean government’s Green New Deal and carbon neutrality policy.” In addition, Bloom Energy intends to supply its solid-oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC), which are designed to produce green hydrogen via solar and battery, to South Korea in 2022 as part of the RE100 project. The green hydrogen produced by the SOEC, which is created through electrolysis by converting water and renewable electricity into hydrogen without carbon emissions, will be used to power the hydrogen SOFC. Green hydrogen produced by the SOEC can be processed into eMethanol, green ammonia, and a host of other green chemicals and fuels. Green hydrogen relies on new sources of renewable energy, such as wind or solar power, to split water into oxygen and hydrogen using electrolysis. Scale up of green hydrogen production will increase the role of electricity in hard to decarbonise areas, including transport, heating, and chemical industries, where it plays a small role today.

The business case for green hydrogen requires very large amounts of cheap renewable electricity because a fair amount is lost in electrolysis. Electrolyser efficiencies range from around 60 percent to 80 percent, according to Shell. Bloom Energy says its mission is to make clean, reliable energy affordable for everyone in the world. Bloom Energy’s product, the Bloom Energy Server, delivers highly reliable and resilient, always-on electric power that is clean, cost-effective, and ideal for microgrid applications. In July 2021 Bloom Energy announced its plan to convert its entire global natural gas fleet to certified low-leak natural gas to prevent the release of harmful methane emissions stemming from upstream gas production. In addition, Bloom Energy and MiQ, a non-profit partnership between RMI and SYSTEMIQ, said it will collaborate to test and refine elements of the certified gas marketplace and educate Bloom Energy customers and other industry stakeholders on the importance of reducing the environmental impacts of natural gas production. Achieving reductions in methane emissions is the CO2 equivalent of replacing 60 percent of the world’s coalfired power plants with zero-emissions generation.Bloom Energy’s customers include many Fortune 100 companies and leaders in manufacturing, data centres, healthcare, retail, higher education, utilities, and other industries. NEW GAS-FIRED GENSETS SUPPLIED TO PANASONIC IN INDONESIA

J

apan-based Panasonic Corporation is a worldclass and well-known manufacturer of electronics for businesses and retail. Headquartered in Osaka, the Panasonic brand name first established its market in the Asia Pacific region in 1961 in Thailand. In the years that followed, Panasonic’s operation expanded into what is now six regional areas covering over eighty countries including Indonesia. PT. Panasonic Industrial Devices Batam (PID-BT) is part of Panasonic Group in Indonesia and provides services to retail and businesses that involve electronic components. Since 2011 PID-BT relies on two MWM gas engine sets (TCG 2020 V16K) as their main power source with exemplary performance. PT. Kaltimex Energy, an authorized distributor of MWM gas engine sets, and its continued valued after-sales services provided PID-BT an additional 2 MWM gensets in 2018. The customer feedback from PID-BT supports Kaltimex Energy’s commendable performance in providing high-quality after-sales services including spare parts and tools support. The very positive co-operation over many years, the excellent service of Kaltimex and the very good performance of the MWM generator sets led PID-BT to continue to rely on MWM gensets. This resulted in the replacement of old engines in 2020 and more orders for TCG 2020 V16K gensets in early 2021. Panasonic says its mission statement is as follows: “To enhance customer growth by providing reliable, efficient, competitive and environmentally friendly power solutions” continues to reach its customers with the outstanding and dependable support from Kaltimex Energy and the MWM gensets manufactured in Mannheim.” In a second Kaltimex project in Indonesia, MWM gas gensets are also demonstrating the great advantage they have in decentralised power generation. Summarecon Group, a leading property management company in Indonesia has traditionally benefitted from running four units of MWM gas generator sets in their shopping malls in the Serpong-Tangerang area. Additionally, waste heat from the engine exhaust is also used for air conditioning the mall using absorption chillers. In early 2019, Summarecon Group decided to replace two out of their four ageing engines with new gas generator sets. However, this decision was not easy

16

as they could have chosen to purchase another brand of gas engines as they have in their other facilities. However, due to their confidence in MWM engine performance, they proceeded to purchase more units via Kaltimex Energy. Their continued faith in Kaltimex Energy’s after-sales services and the knowledge of obtaining only genuine spare parts was a key factor in their decision. Although the competition with other brands of gas engines was tight, the management at Summarecon were convinced that achieving their long-term goals with reliable support from Kaltimex Energy and MWM gas engines was the right fit for their company. They promptly purchased two units of MWM TCG 2020 V20 believing that reasonable maintenance cost with high quality and dependable support from Kaltimex Energy was best for their Serpong Mall. In early 2020, the two units of German-made MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas generator sets were also successfully commissioned in their powerhouse with mechanical and electrical installation provided by Kaltimex Energy. Summarecon Group continues to be one of Kaltimex Energy’s satisfied customers for quality installation and after-sales services. Long-term successful customer relations and first choice provider of energy solutions is Kaltimex Energy’s enduring hallmark. The MWM gas engines of the TCG 2020 series are perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment. The models in the output range of 1,000 – 2,000 kWel meet the high requirements of a broad

range of applications and guarantee efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability. The MWM TCG 3020, successor model of the TCG 2020 generator set effectively balances efficiency and reliability. The genset delivers up to 18 percent more output than its predecessor, though its dimensions are almost the same. Additionally, the new model features long service intervals with up to 80,000 operating hours until the next general overhaul (if the gas quality is high) and a total efficiency of more than 87 percent (with natural gas). Owing to their high reliability and profitability, the TCG 3020 generator sets with an output of 1,380 to 2,300 kWel are ready for the challenges of Industry 4.0. Thanks to the use of the digital power plant control TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management), the gas engines are able to reach their full performance for maximum plant availability, capacity, and usability. www.mwm.net

EIGHT 2,000KW DYNAMIC UPS UNITS FOR A DATA CENTRE IN SINGAPORE

S

ingapore is a secure regional data centre hub with a stable government, a modern infrastructure, and global connectivity. The country operates some of the most modern data centres in the world to offer class-leading telecommunications, cloud-based applications, and data services. Strategically located in the western part of Singapore, a new mission-critical facility has been designed to meet the increased security and reliability demands of the next generation of power-intensive IT deployments. It recently installed UPS equipment from HITEC Power Protection. The new data centre joins a network of eight existing data centers in Singapore. Its geographical separation, coupled with the company’s internal fibreoptic network, is ideally positioned the site for disaster recovery and business continuity services. Operational efficiency was of primary importance to the engineering team at this location. Within the UPS market there are conflicting messages about the efficiency of static and dynamic UPS systems: vendors of Project challenge both technologies were touting efficiencies in the high 90’s at 100% load. After extensive discussions with both static and dynamic UPS system providers, it was apparent that while static UPS systems initially seemed more efficient, many of the potential operational losses were removed from their calculations, i.e. air-conditioning, battery charging, and connection losses. The client also identified additional equipment needed to offer a comparable level of harmonic filtration to that of dynamic systems.

STRATEGICALLY LOCATED IN THE WESTERN PART OF SINGAPORE, A NEW MISSION-CRITICAL FACILITY HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO MEET THE INCREASED SECURITY AND RELIABILITY DEMANDS OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF POWERINTENSIVE IT DEPLOYMENTS.

INDEPENDENT POWER ASIA

After a detailed study to assess the true total cost of ownership, the client opted for the solution with the lowest operational cost: dynamic UPS equipment from HITEC Power Protection. The analysis pointed to several hidden costs for static UPS. First, high efficiencies come when the unit is operating in a near-bypass mode that provides very little power conditioning. Next, the Static UPS system could only be installed in a dust free, air-conditioned environment to protect the power electronics. Also, the losses attributed to the increased number of connections, recharging and ventilation of the batteries tipped the scales. When these were factored back into the equation, the efficiency of the entire static UPS solution was more like 91%, versus the 97% on-line efficiency of the HITEC dynamic system, reports the manufacturer. There are about 60 data centres in Singapore, according to a tally by research firm Structure Research. The past five years has since a “rapid

increase” in the number of data centres being approved for construction on industrial state land. In Singapore, data centres accounted for about 7% of the country’s total electricity consumption last year, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) in a recent written answer to a parliamentary question. Exactly fourteen data centres with a total IT capacity of 768 megawatts were given the green light during the 2016-21 period, compared to 12 data centres carrying 307 megawatts in the preceding five years. “Singapore is a relatively small city-country, when compared to the other tier-1 markets such as Tokyo, Sydney and Hong Kong. Yet we come in second in terms of IT capacity,” said Ms Lim ChinYee, senior director of Asia-Pacific data centre solutions at CBRE. “It is therefore important that Singapore ensures that the overall data centre ecosystem is environmentally sustainable, while balancing the need for growth.” hitec-ups.com www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
