In Yemen, less than half of the population has access to electricity. In 2010, the government launched an ambitious National Strategy for renewable energy and energy efficiency, which aims to develop grid and off-grid renewable energy and targets a 15% share of renewable electricity generation by 2025. But that was before unrelenting civil war unfolded.
Yemen’s civil war began in 2014 when Houthi insurgents - Shiite rebels with links to Iran and a history of rising up against the Sunni government - took control of Yemen’s capital and largest city, Sanaa, demanding lower fuel prices and a new government.
Yemen’s current electricity supply is heavily dependent on imported diesel and HFO. This is an enormous drain on the budget – yet these fuels are the most expensive (and most polluting) way to generate electricity. Yemen urgently needs to switch to cheaper fuels.
The power generation system in Yemen is extremely run down and urgently needs to be resuscitated.
Achieving this will require switching to cheaper and renewable energy sources like solar, making key repairs to the transmission and distribution system, restoring livelihoods to off-grid communities through decentralised renewable energy systems, and making fundamental governance changes to improve the autonomy, profitability, and security of the sector.
ONGOING CIVIL WAR HAS REDUCED YEMEN’S POWER GRID TO PROVIDING JUST 39W PER PERSON FOR A NATION OF 30 MILLION PEOPLE.”
Ten years of war (2014- 2024) have destroyed or severely damaged the National Grid, such that it now only serves Aden and nearby governorates that are located away from conflict areas. Available generation capacity has fallen from 1.5 GW before the war, to a little over 1 GW (including purchased energy). For a population of 30 million people – that is just 39W per person.
Yemen’s power system is old, poorly maintained, and now almost entirely dependent on imported diesel and heavy fuel oil (HFO). The areas in the North and West of the country – controlled by the AnsarAllah (AA) movement (commonly referred to as the Houthis) – suffer from unreliable fuel supply due to a de facto embargo, resulting in the population increasingly resorting to small-scale solar solutions. The Internationally Recognised Government (IRG) based in Aden in the South can only afford to continue its limited generation because of the fuel grant it receives from the Saudi Arabia government. The siutation is this. The Yemeni government has very few resources to invest; and foreign investors are reluctant to engage due to the ongoing conflict.

NEW RANGE OF REPAIR SLEEVES FOR THE 1100 SERIES ENGINES
Perkins has introduced a range of repair sleeves for its 1100 Series engines. These can enable end users to return cylinder bores to like-new performance while avoiding the downtime, expense, and waste of a full engine overhaul.
They also allow technicians to restore individual cylinders to their factory dimensions, allowing the original, standard-sized pistons to be retained and maintaining proper engine balance.
This process significantly reduces the amount of material removed from the block, helping to extend the life of the original casting while minimising shop time and waste. The repair sleeves are composed of the same material as the engine block to match the wear, thermal and machining characteristics.
The repair sleeves are suitable for 1100 Series engines configured on off-highway equipment and power solutions in the field since 2003.
Offering power output up to 205 kW (275 horsepower), Perkins 1100 Series engines are used on applications such as tractors, chippers, grinders and other off-highway equipment, small generator sets and small marine propulsion systems.
Richard Hemmings, Perkins aftermarket general manager, explains: “As the complexity and expense of engine overhauls have risen over time, equipment owners have requested a flexible, cost-effective solution that enables them to extend operational lifetimes with minimal downtime for service.”
This move provides an innovative solution for one of the most popular engine lines and illustrates Perkins’ philosophy of continuous collaboration.

2,250 KVA GENSET FOR THE NATIONAL WATER COMPANY IN THE KINDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA
A 2,250 kVA diesel generator with Cummins engine and Leroy Somer alternator has been purchased and installed by the National Water Company in Saudi Arabia.
The genset features a 250 KVA medium-voltage 4160 Volt generator powered by Cummins QSK60-G6 engine and Leroy Somer LSA52.3XL10 alternator and will be used to provide emergency power as required on infrastructure operated by the the National Water Company.
A spokesman commented: “This is a reliable and robust solution securing uninterrupted power for most critical applications. The featured generator passed the factory acceptance test conducted in Rabigh guaranteeing quality and performance for this application.”
Water companies require an source of independent power to energise electric water pumps. These provide an increase in water pressure.
The pump forces the water through the pipes at a higher pressure, enabling utilities to get more water out of any given pipe. Electric water pumps also help to reduce water usage by using the same amount of water in a shorter amount of time.
Yanbu, Saudi Arabia: the Saudi Diesel Equipment Company has supplied diesel generator sets, equipped with its alternators for the national petrochemical industry. Despite extreme weather conditions (50°C, 100% humidity, seismic zone and extreme dust), the Saudi Diesel Equipment Company has designed a medium voltage 4.16kV alternator with rated power of 4000kVA. A D550 digital regulator was also essential for parallel genset operation and online monitoring.
A spokesman comments: “To meet the highest standards, our alternators passed all rigorous tests conducted by Saudi Diesel and third-party inspectors assuring top-notch quality and compliance. With their compact dimensions and plug-n-play concept, these complete packaged units are easy to install, run, and maintain. They include everything from the engine, alternator, MV switchgear, control panels, to fire alarm etc. ensuring optimal performance and safety.”
DUBAI’S NEW AIRPORT FOR THE 2030 WILL NEED MORE ENERY
Currently a secondary airport, an expanded Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai could handle 250 million passengers per year. All it needs is more investment and - of course - more electrical power
With Dubai International Airport (DXB) nearing capacity, the UAE is already drawing up plans for its successor, to be built on the city’s outskirts and projected to open in the 2030s or earlier.
Dubai’s next major hub technically already existsAl Maktoum International Airport (DWC), located 23 miles southwest of the city and primarily serving freight planes.
Today, Al Maktoum has a
capacity of just 1.6 million passengers annually. But that could rise to 250 million by 2050, under plans to massively expand the hub and redirect DXB’s crowds there.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, which owns both airports, said designs are already being produced for the new mega-airport, which will become necessary in just a few years.
Airport infrastructure will need to be in place by 2025 when the first battery and hydrogen-powered passenger flights could start operating.
Ground infrastructure will be vital for battery-electric and hydrogen aircraft as they become available.
