W
elcome to the 2023 PowerEx Live Conference being held at on December 7th, 2023, at the prestigious Park Plaza Hotel ,Westminster, London. PowerEx offers a unique opportunity for today’s power professionals at a difficult time for energy management issues in Europe. . The GEN-SET, CHP & ENERGY LIVE Conferences will run parallel with exhibitor presentations available in adjoining rooms. The venue has been arranged with care so that products can be safely introduced directly to customers. There’s also the opportunity - of course - for a prime networking experience with experts in all fields of CHP, Data Centres, Renewables, Storage, Consultancy and Gensets, to name just a few. A key speaker at this event is the Right Honourable Dr.Alan Whithead MP, who will be presenting a paper entitled “Labour’s Plan to Deliver Britain’s Low-Carbon Energy System”. This presentation will discuss Labour’s commitments on the UK’s power sector and will also touch upon areas like hydrogen and CCS infrastructure. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) encompasses technologies for capturing carbon dioxide which would otherwise be emitted to the atmosphere, transporting and storing it deep underground in geological formations where it will be permanently contained. The deployment of CCS will be crucial to meeting the challenge of climate change in the most cost-effective way. It will also create new business opportunities. In the UK alone these could be worth in excess of £3bn a year by 2030. While there is widespread acceptance that CCS is technically viable, there is still much to be learned about the application of the suite of technologies (capture, transport and storage) on a commercial basis. Decisions also have to be made on how to implement EU requirements for third party access to carbon-dioxide pipelines and storage sites in a way which balances the interests of the owners and potential users of those facilities. The second key area under discussion is that of hydrogen. The growth in the use of hydrogen presents a significant growth opportunity across all regions of the UK, supporting decarbonisation and improving energy security, while system balancing our renewable power generation. It is also the primary route for a significant portion of our existing energy intensive industry to decarbonise. Dave Andrews, Chairman of the Claverton Energy ‘Think Tank’, and a current conference organiser for PowerEx Live 2023, commented: “Once again PowerEx Live 2023 will prove itself to be a key event for the power sector. “Something very special is on offer at PowerEx Live. This year we are offering a TRAINING & ENGINEERING HUB in a selected area of the exhibition space. Offering advice will be Ashley Bookman, CEO of Momentum Incorporated. He is a systemic thinker whose primary focus is to understand and provide viable, practical advice to personal and organisational problems.” Dave Andrews continues: “Also available for consultation will be John Booth, chair of the Data Centre Alliance’s (DCA) Energy Efficiency & member of the Sustainability steering group, shaping the DCA’s policy on these topics as well as providing support to the DCA in other steering groups and the Alliance’s wider activities. He is the Vice Chair of the British Computer Society, Chartered Institute for IT, Green IT specialist group. Also onsite will be representatives from Mecc Alte and Finning who will be talking about the importance of quality training for industry.” The UK and European energy sectors have had to become extra resilient in recent years. The UK has weathered last year’s energy situation and government efforts have focussed on topping up storage reserves as much as possible to avoid a repeat of last winter. The UK energy sector is more focused than ever on planning ahead and buying in supplies for future demand. However, storage can only do so much and isn’t a longterm solution. To become energy independent, decarbonisation must lay at the heart of our longterm national strategy. Only by using cleaner energy sources, moving away from fossil fuels and putting the right infrastructure in place can energy security become a reality. We do hope you find your day with in London extremely useful, profitable and informative. Come along, join with us and show that you too are committed to Europe’s expanding energy future. Don’t forget to tmake a note of December 12th, 2024 - the date set for the next POWEREX LIVE event after this one. We also have our regional event and Golf Day in 2024: this is PowerEx Live MIDLANDS held on 27th June 2024 at The Belfry Hotel & Country Club.

These sectors are facing an unprecedented shift and rapidly looking to innovation to achieve net zero. Carnot offers the most suitable powertrain to decarbonise these markets. Modern engines, typically operate around 35% thermal efficiency. Using advanced technical materials & innovative engine design, we achieve 70% break thermal efficiency. No cooling required. Cooling systems are required to maintain the integrity of metal components in traditional engines and remove 30% of the energy generated by the fuel. In 1824, Monsieur Carnot worked out that the maximum efficiency engines can achieve is 85%. Fast forward 200 years and the average efficiencies engines are achieving is around 35%. Utilising advanced technical ceramics & innovative engine design, we can achieve efficiencies of 70%. The off-grid energy and long-haul transport sectors, unregulated until the last decade, must be net zero by 2050. Carnot power units will be developed to run on hydrogen and biofuels for net zero operation.

5 Unit 5, Brookfield Works Elland, West Yorkshire HX5 9AN, UK www.capstonepowersolutions.com Capstone’s green energy solutions align perfectly with the needs of the oil and gas industry and are currently used in all phases of oil production including upstream, midstream, and downstream operations in both onshore and offshore applications. Capstone’s technology provide the low operational cost, high availability, and high reliability oil producers need. These green energy solutions can be easily integrated to capture thermal energy produced from the exhaust to provide a significant economic advantage to end users. Capstone’s microturbines can achieve overall efficiency levels of up to 80 percent in combined heat and power (CHP) applications and up to 90 percent in combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) applications. Capstone’s energy solutions also align perfectly with the needs of mission-critical businesses. Because of the potentially catastrophic consequences of system failure, momentary or otherwise, certain high demand power users, including high technology, healthcare and information

POWEREX LIVE – EXHIBITORS systems facilities require higher levels of reliability in their power generation service. The majority of microturbine based distributed generation installations have powered through hurricanes with little or no downtime. To meet these customer requirements, traditional solutions utilise Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to protect critical loads from power disturbances along with back-up diesel generators for extended outages. We offer an alternative solution that can both meet customer reliability requirements and reduce operating costs. With the use of an anaerobic digester, Capstone’s renewable power solutions are able to cleanly and effectively run on methane gas from landfills, wastewater treatment facilities and food processing facilities, as well as agriculture waste, which is often referred to as “green waste.” Rather than simply venting or flaring the methane gas, Capstone microturbines can convert this free fuel to clean and reliable electricity for use at the site or surrounding areas.
CHEESECAKE ENERGY LTD (CEL) 45 Sir Colin Campbell Building, Triumph Rd, Nottingham NG7 2TU cheesecakeenergy.com At CEL, we believe that future-proofing our energy systems requires longer-duration, long-term solutions that don’t cost the earth. Our flagship eTanker storage system is built around a commitment to sustainability, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint from design through manufacturing and recycling. By repurposing off-the-shelf hardware from the automotive and compressed natural gas industries, our technology ensures longer cycle-life, capital cost reductions, financial savings and, most of all, long-term sustainability. Underpinned by a customer-first approach and a continued commitment to innovation, we are dedicated to helping clients to optimise their energy use and achieve their decarbonisation goals for a greener, cleaner planet. Cheesecake Energy Ltd (CEL), a developer of sustainable thermal and compressed air energy storage, has been awarded £9.4m funded through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) by the UK Government’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero to install a set of pilot energy storage systems in Colchester. The funding was awarded by the government’s Longer Duration Energy Storage competition, part of its commitment to investing in clean energy technology and reducing the country’s carbon footprint. With the funding, CEL plans to install energy storage systems in a new mixed-use development in Colchester, which is being set up as a microgrid to manage the grid constraints in the local area. The site will have a solar farm of up to 8MW and a central heat pump that supplies a district heating network for nearby residents and businesses. The energy storage systems will store excess energy generated by solar power, which can then be used when demand is high, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and the grid, and lowering carbon emissions.

POWEREX LIVE – EXHIBITORS Transmission System Operators and Distribution companies to maintain and improve the quality of their power systems. In the past synchronous condensers were once the primary means of transmission level compensation and voltage regulation. Today advanced power electronic systems falling under the definition of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) have replaced the older primary moving plant. Specifically equipment such as Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) provide the necessary functions with faster operating times, additional operating features, are more reliable and can be provided at lower capital and life time operating costs than the older technology. Providing these systems creates a tremendous improvement in the overall stability and performance of the transmission and distribution system. Mitsubishi Electric gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas circuit breakers (GCB) represent the best of modern technologies. Since commercialising Japan’s first GCB in 1968, we have supplied a variety of circuit breakers and GIS rated from 72~1100kV. Mitsubishi Electric began its industry leadership in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) by building its first product in 1968. In 1973, it installed the first 500kV hybrid gas-insulated substation. Three years later Mitsubishi Electric constructed the world’s first 550kV fully gas-insulated switchyard at the Ohi Nuclear Power Station, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Japan. Since then more than 12,000 GIS bays over the range of voltages manufactured have been installed in substations worldwide. As Mitsubishi Electric Europe we combine the Japanese strengths of equipment development, manufacturing and quality control with the traditional British skills of innovative engineering design, project management and construction to maintain our lead in the provision of turnkey services with a strong customer focus.

PEREGRINE electric heaters can be designed and manufactured to suit most heating requirements and the company prides itself on quick innovative design and problem solving. Recent bespoke products have included; circulatory oil heaters with pipework, a heating system for a chemical process, an oil sump heater for a vintage car used for hill-climbs and pre-race pumped coolant heaters for an Italian car racing company. POWER GENERATION DIRECTORY 2017
In recent years the models of PEREGRINE fuel tank heaters have increased to include a range of top-entry tank heaters with standard wattages of up to 6000. This need has arisen due to the increasing number of bunded tank systems, in turn due to Health & Safety considerations. The thermostats for these models can be specified at any required depth within the tank, the heating elements themselves then running about 25mm above the tank floor. The range of tank heaters has further increased with the need for even lower surface-watts-density heaters to accommodate the various types of bio-fuel and their varying requirements. With a team of skilled engineers on hand for advice and support, our aim is to offer our customers the exact product to meet their needs and to modify our heaters where necessary in order to meet their requirements. www.preheat.co.uk www.yourguides.net

regional conference & exhibition. This event was designed to give enhanced access for the power generation sector to companies with a primary focus in the region. This proved a major success as over 120+ delegates and exhibition personnel were registered. The 2023 event was described by one attendee as “business, education and excellent golfing all rolled into one.”. Adam Thomas, CTO, also commented on the 2023 PowerEx Live event in Cheshire: “Thanks for running the event, it was a good place to network with other people in the generator industry. The talks were informative and helped to give a good summary of the issues and opportunities in the market.” For more details on the 2024 Powerex Live Midlands Conference, the Call For Papers and Exhibiting please visit: www.powerexlive.co.uk/ midlands

2023 & 2024 GENSET MARKETS
T
his year - 2023 - appears to be a transition year for generators below 750 kVA, writes Romain Mocaer of Powergen Statistics. After more than 2 years of post-COVID recovery, and double-digit growth (+22% in 2021, +15% in 2022), 2023’s fingures should indicate growth at a lower rate (+6%), with a much weaker second half of the year, and a slight decrease expected in 2024. Indeed, the main drivers of growth are currently at a standstill, even if large disparities exist depending on the region and segment. One of the big differences between 2022 and 2023 is the stock levels at distributors. In just a few months, we went from a situation where demand was much higher than supply (long lead times, shortage of components) to a situation where supply is now higher than demand. The local Chinese market being very affected by the real estate and construction crisis, and Europe (which was boosted in 2022 by Ukrainian imports and fears of an energy crisis) are having a significant negative impact on the market in this end of 2023 and 2024. Outlook by application On a global scale, the main market drivers for sub 750 kVA generator sets are the industrial and construction sector, the Telecom market, agriculture, rental and residential generators. Here are their trends for 2024. - Mobile and rental groups: The market is expected to take a break in Europe, after 2 years of post-COVID recovery where rental companies have invested massively in new fleets, and the outlook for the construction market calls for great caution. In North America, the mobile market seems to be holding steady at very high levels. - Industry and construction: In general, the residential construction sector should decline in most regions, and the non-residential construction sector should show very contrasting growth depending on the region: sustained in Southeast Asia and to a lesser extent North America, it should suffer in China, Europe
44
POWEREX LIVE 2023
[Diagram courtesy of Powergen Statistics]. The global market for diesel generator sets (sub 750KVA) represented for 2020-2024 and Latin America. - Telecom: Although the development of 5G still benefits this segment, growth will be very moderate in 2024 because certain markets (USA) have invested massively in past years, except in Asia where growth should be more sustained. Forecast by region - China: Local Chinese market will continue to suffer in 2024 as residential housing projects will continue to decline while growth in infrastructure projects may moderate. Businesses are suffering from the slowdown in the global economy and falling exports. On the other hand, Chinese exports of generator sets are booming and have doubled in 2 years. - South East Asia: It is one of the regions that should do well in 2024, thanks to the growth of construction infrastructure projects in the key countries (Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines). Roads, railways projects as well as the relocation of the capital in Indonesia are some of the key examples. - India: 2023 is a transition year for generators below 800 kW with the implementation of the CPCB IV+ emissions standard. Government spending on infrastructure and the country’s economic outlook provide optimism for sustaining the growth of the Indian market. - Europe: This is the region that is expected to suffer the most at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024. After 2 years of very strong growth, driven
recently by the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine and the energy crisis, the main vectors of growth are at a standstill. (Ukrainian imports, fears of an energy crisis, decline in construction) and product stocks are high at distributors. The market is expected to record a double-digit decline in most countries in 2024. - Africa & Middle East: growth prospects are subject to significant downside risks due to, persistently tight global financial conditions and elevated geopolitical risk especially in Africa. However two countries should be the pillars of growth in these regions: Saudi Arabia thanks to the giant construction and infrastructure programs that have started, and South Africa which still suffers from blackouts and whose emergency generator market still very strong. - North America: growth has been mainly driven by the mobile segment and investments in new fleets. Although fears exist in the residential market, the nonresidential construction sector is expected to continue its growth thanks to the positive impact of government-related infrastructure investments. - South America: After a year of strong growth in 2022, the South American market is expected to take a break in 2023-2024. Inventory levels are high among distributors and the construction sector is slowing down despite substantial infrastructure programs. For more information, please visit: www.powergen-statistics.com

THE PATH TO ENERGY SECURITY
L
ast year, the UK was hit with one of its harshest winters yet, facing an energy crisis on a scale unseen since the 1970s, explains Simon Tucker, Global Head of Energy, Utilities & Resources at Infosys Consulting. Eased by the warmer weather and governments’ increased focus on shoring up supply, the cost of wholesale oil and gas has finally started to decrease. But we’re not out of the woods yet. With winter on the horizon, the UK’s energy situation remains volatile, and things could dramatically change depending on the cold snaps over winter and the current geopolitical situation. That’s not to say the energy sector hasn’t become more resilient. It weathered last year’s storm and government efforts have pivoted to topping up storage reserves as much as possible to avoid a repeat of last winter. The UK energy sector is more focused than ever on planning ahead and buying in supplies for future demand. However, storage can only do so much and isn’t a long-term solution. To become energy independent, decarbonisation must lay at the heart of our long-term national strategy. Only by using cleaner energy sources, moving away from fossil fuels and putting the right infrastructure in place can energy security become a reality. So, how can the UK maximise clean investments to ensure energy independence for the foreseeable future? Putting connectivity at the heart of investment To achieve energy security, maximising the potential of renewables is key. The UK is unique in terms of having access to renewables like hydro, wind, solar, even tidal. Many countries don’t have this variety of green energy inputs, and the UK should be capitalising on this advantage. Such inputs make for an ideal community renewables system - a relatively cheap, plentiful, and environmentally-friendly alternative.
“The UK energy sector is more focused than ever on planning ahead and buying in supplies for future demand. However, storage can only do so much and isn’t a long-term solution.” - Simon Tucker

However, community renewables require local communities up and down the country to be plugged in, which is a big challenge. Right now, the potential of green power is being missed, with new solar and wind sites waiting up to 10 to 15 years to be connected, because of a lack of capacity and connectivity in the system. Currently, homes in certain regions of the UK don’t have any real option of clean energy because of these connectivity issues. It is imperative that the UK finds a way of taking the renewable energy we’re producing from more remote locations, typically in the north, to towns and cities throughout the UK. This requires higher investment in the National Grid, which currently faces a considerable backlog to connect renewable energy projects. Without this connectivity, renewables programmes will have stunted impact. We need more cables and storage across the country, so that every region can access low carbon electricity, putting the UK on the right path to net zero. Unlocking the potential of mini nuclear Another solution lies in the potential for mini nuclear reactors. When combined with community renewables, mini nuclear can significantly reduce carbon emissions. These can be deployed close to population centres, and are an agile and speedy alternative to massive power plant sites like Hinkley Point and Sizewell, which can take as many as fifteen years to construct. We need to be moving to net zero at a
much faster rate. Investing in initiatives like these means the government can make considerable strides to increase access to more sustainable sources. Once mini nuclear takes off, the UK will then have the facilities to kickstart small modular reactor (SMRs) initiatives - this is another cheaper, quicker model compared with traditional plant designs. In the battle for sustainable energy, lower costs are the crucial element in justifying the nuclear push and make this an energy source well-placed to work as the ideal partner alongside community renewables. Enhancing ethical standards with oil & gas In reality, the transition to clean energy won’t happen overnight and we’re not at a point where we can completely decarbonise the industry. With the majority of energy used in 2022 coming from coal, oil and gas (78%) there will still be a mass amount of oil and gas production while we transition to cleaner energy sources. This transition will take time and it is likely that fossil fuel use will continue on a considerable scale until the mid2030s. However, whilst fossil fuels are necessary reality for the near future, we can combat their effects by reducing waste. Investment into oil and gas shouldn’t be written off completely, at least for now. With the right strategy, it can be used to funnel investment towards cleaning up many bad industry practices that are causing more environmental damage in the long run. SIMON TUCKER
