The first phase of the project will be complete by spring 2023 and will integrate solar photovoltaic panels, a 500 kVA grid connection, electric vehicle (EV) charging points and electricity demand from an office building, as well as heating from an air source heat pump Capacity has been set aside for the project’s Phase 2 (subject to funding), which will enable the depot to produce more energy than it uses by integrating a battery energy storage system, as well as combined heat and power (CHP) units fed by hydrogen gas from biomass gasification units

The research was commissioned by waste to pellet company WKE, which turns materials such as wood, paper, card and non chlori nated plastics that are destined for landfill into alternative fuel for power plants, cement kilns and steel manufacturers

The site is one of dozens of similar locations in the UK where this approach could be successfully deployed While the project was initially conceived as an island microgrid, the project scope changed due to reallocation of funding during the pandemic, which shifted the battery system and CHP units to a later phase As a result, ABB’s engineering team worked with Tetra Tech to deliver a scheme that would meet the requirements of Phase 1 alone, as well as Phase 2 in the future David Lowen, ABB’s Lead Business Manager in the UK for Electrification said: “The beauty of our circuit breakers is that they come with additional features built in, such as accurate metering, as well as digital communication and algorithms for smart decision making

“Not only does that save space and reduce installation time, but it gives them the flexibility to control low voltage distribution, as well as more sophisticated roles such as power management, load shedding and generator control when clients require these That creates exciting opportunities for a site like this in Greater Manchester ”

Now in its 10th year, the prestigious event celebrates innovation, progress and success in the clean energy industry across both banks of the Humber A true leader in the sector, the judges were impressed by Jordan’s pivotal role in driving the rapid growth of myenergi, alongside her commitment to leading the transition to electrification As one of the UK’s fastest growing renewable tech businesses, myenergi is renowned for its industry defining portfolio of eco smart solutions that help users to reduce reliance on mains energy supply

According to the findings, there are substantial benefits to using SIRF pellets, including that they perform two times better on CO2 emissions than natural gas, and three and a half times better than coal Ian Jones, CEO at WKE, said:

Greater Manchester to be blueprint for carbon negative microgrids

Commenting on the news, Jordan said: “When we founded myenergi, the vision was simple create a positive impact, push the boundaries of possibility and change the world through pioneering green technologies In the few years since, we’ve built a global brand, created hundreds of green jobs and helped to put the Humber firmly on the map as a hub for sustainability

The electrical control scheme is based on smart ABB Ability™ circuit breakers These have the capabi lity and flexibility to control power generation, distribution and consumption, as well as providing advanced features such as power management, metering and communication

“We’ve worked closely with ABB to develop an innovative electrical system that anticipates potential future developments that are proposed for Part 8 of the IET Wiring Regulations,” said Lindsay Moody, Director of Engineering, Tetra Tech “The result is a sophisticated control system that provides a similar level of control to an industrial control system but at a fraction of the cost It has huge potential to help operators of small scale commercial and industrial sites make th e most of renewable energy and reduce their own carbon emissions ”

Oldham Council’s long term goal is for a future eco park (based at its Environmental Services’ depot) to become carbon negative by completely covering its own electrical and heat requirements, as well as supplying excess power to the grid

Solid improved recovered fuel (SIRF) pellets perform significantly better than coal and natural gas on carbon emissions, according to a new report by management consultant and waste specialist Monksleigh

ABB (is a leading global technology company which energizes the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future By connecting software to its electrification, robotics, automation and motion portfolio, ABB pushes the boundaries of technology to drive performance to new levels ABB’s Electrification Business Area is a global leader in electrical products and solutions, operating in more than 100 countries, with over 200 manufactu ring sites Its 50,000+ employees are dedicated to transforming how people live, connect and work

WKE fuel pellets are cleaner and greener than coal and gas in coal fired power stations and steel manufacturing As a substitute for natural gas, for example in brickmaking, there are also significant benefits “The report also shows that the carbon emissions produced in the manufacture of our pellets are considerably lower than sending waste directly to landfill ” Global energy costs are rising, and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed them up even more Coupled with Britain’s net zero ambitions and concerns around our reliance on foreign fossil fuels, there has been a redoubling of efforts to find homegrown greener and cheaper sources

ABB is delivering the electrical distribution and control systems for a 300 kW future microgrid that Tetra Tech, the engineering and management consultancy, is deploying for Oldham Council in Greater Manchester. The system provides similar electrical control as an industrial-scale system but at a fraction of the cost. The project is a blueprint for small-scale microgrids and has potential for deployment at thousands of commercial and industrial sites around the UK.

Drax says it remains committed to coal closure and development of BECCS, with no change to its expected timetable In 2010, the Drax station was co firing biomass In 2012, the company announced plans to convert three generating units to solely biomass, burning 7 5 million tonnes imported from the United States and Canada This work was completed in 2016 and a f urther fourth unit was converted in 2018 The company now plans to convert its remaining two coal units to Combined Cycle Gas Turbine units and 200 MW battery storage In June 2014 Drax engaged in a joint venture with Alstom and BOC to build a 626 MW oxygen fuelled combustion power station adjacent to the existing Drax site The idea was that the National Grid would simultaneously construct a pipeline to transport CO2 40 miles (64 km) to the Yorkshire coast for sequestration In July 2014 the project was awarded €300 million funding from the European Commission

Drax says it is continuing to push forward with its plans for Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology in order to become a global leader in negative emissions It adds that its portfolio generated 5% of the UK’s electricity between April 2021 and April 2022 (the most recent period for which data is available) and 11% of the UK’s renewable electricity over the same period Will Gardiner, CEO, said: “We are accelerating our investment in renewable generation, having recently submitted planning applications for the development of BECCS at Drax Power Station and for the expansion of Cruachan Pumped Storage Power Station “As a leading producer of sustainable wood pellets we continue to invest in expanding our pellet production in order to supply the rising global demand for renewable power generated from biomass “We have commissioned new biomass pellet production p lants in the US South and expect to take a final investment decision on up to 500,000 tonnes of additional capacity before the end of the year “In the UK and US we have plans to invest £3bn in renewables that would create thousands of green jobs in communities that need them ”

More vehicle to grid tech needed to support renewable Renergy enewable energy drive at Drax power station site problem has always been numer ous and obvious, if difficult to implement at large; battery storage, efficient grid manage ment, supply side control, demand side response, and pumped hydroelectric storage are all essential ” According to Virta Global, there will be 140 240 million electric vehicles globally by 2030, which means there will be at least 140 million batteries with an aggregated storage capacit y of 7TWh, or 7,000GWh

The group’s customers business performed well with Adjusted EBITDA of £24m (H1 2021: £5m loss) This is a significant improveme nt on 2021, which was affected by Covid 19 principally in the SME business In January 2022, Drax’s two legacy coal units were called into the Balancing Mechanism by the system operator for limited operations to support security of energy supply

The business notes these short term measures helped stabilise the power system during periods of system stress and did not result in any significant increas e in the Group’s total carbon emissions

Electric vehicles (EVs) could provide crucial power storage to support the generation of renewable energy, using vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology A renewable powered grid needs a backup energy source for when the sun isn’t shining or the wind blowing Traditionally, this may have been gas, but this is now less feasible due to a reduction in Russian gas supplies EVs could help achieve this flexible, cheap, and independent on demand energy grid Aidan McClean, CEO of UFODRIVE, said: “The answers to this North Yorkshire based energy supplier, Drax Group, has recorded adjusted EBITDA of £225m in its half year results for the six months ended 30 June 2022 (H1 2021: £186m). The business also recorded pre tax profits of £200m (H1 2021: £52m) and a total operating profit from continuing operations of £207m (H1 2021: £84m).

In May 2018, Drax announced a new carbon capture and storage pilot scheme undertaken with the Leeds based firm, C Capture The focus of this pilot will was on capturing carbon post combustion from the biomass burners as opposed to the coal b urners Drax will invest £400,000 into the project The company, C Capture, is a side company of the Department of Chemistry established at the University of Leeds This would yield about 1 tonne (1 1 ton) of CO2 stored per day from the process, which could be sold on for use in the drinks industry The pilot scheme was launched in February 2019 The capture of carbon from biomas burners is officially kno wn as Bio Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)

Lithium ion batteries are currently used in everything from smartphones to medium sized power storage systems however the cost of producing them makes them unsuitable for large scale backup systems for wind and solar power installations With a growing need for such systems to store and provide power when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing, an international team of researchers set about creating a low cost battery made from inexpensive and abundant materials “I wanted to invent something that was better, much better, than lithium ion batteries for small scale stationary storage, and ultimately for automotive [uses],” commented Donald Sadoway, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Together with scientists from institutions in Canada, China and across the US, Professor Sadoway set about trying to make a suitable battery made of aluminium, the second most abundant material on the marketplace, and sulphur, the cheapest of all the non metals

The completion of the drive represents a key moment for the £1 billion project to rewire London and prepare it for future electricity demands as the city continues to grow LPT will also help provide crucial infrastructure for helping the UK energy sector to reach net zero targets Members of the LPT project team gathered at the Eltham site to witness this major milestone and celebrate their achievement National Grid’s three other TBMs, “Edith”, “Grace”, and “Caroline” continue their tunnelling work deep underground across sites in South London Gareth Burden, Project Director, said: “The completion of Christine’s journey from Hurst to Eltham represents a significant milesto ne for all of us working on London Power Tunnels ” is cheaper than a lithium-ion batteries? ones

National Grid team members have celebrated a landmark moment for the London Power Tunnels (LPT) project as the first of five drives by four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) was completed at Eltham

The 140 tonne TBM, named ‘Christine’ after Christine Townley, the former Executive Director of the Construction Youth Trust, known for her championing of diversity and STEM careers, began its journey at the LPT site in Hurst in July of last year In total, it has travelled 6 7km underneath London, reaching depths of up to 50m underground in the process

This chemistry is distinguished from other aluminium batteries in the choice of a positive elemental chalcogen electrode as opposed to various low capacity compound formulations3,4,5,6, and in the choice of a molten salt electrolyte as opposed to room temperature ionic liquids which induce high polarization Laboratory work shows that the multi step conversion pathway between aluminium and chalcogen allows rapid charging at up to 200C, and the battery endures hundreds of cycles at very high charging rates without aluminium dendrite formation Importantly for scalability, the cell level cost of the aluminium sulfur battery is projected to be less than one sixth that of current lithium ion technologies Composed of earth abundant elements that can be ethically sourced and operated at moderately elevated temperatures just above the boiling point of water, this chemistry has all the requisites of a low cost, rechargeable, fire resistant, recyclable battery, say researchers

Through the acquisition, Baker Hughes also plans to optimise its supply chain by using the BRUSH manufacturing base and expanding its scope on customer projects in both the industrial and energy sectors

Using those two materials as electrodes, the researchers used a molten salt electrolyte that was easy to produce and has a low melting point to avoid overheating “The ingredients are cheap, and the thing is safe it cannot burn,” Professor Sadoway said Small scale versions of the battery could be used at charging stations, storing power and releasing it quickly when needed rather than installing expensive new power lines to serve the chargers A new startup called Avanti has already been set up in order to commercialise the technology “The first order of business for the company is to demonstrate that it works at scale,” Professor Adoway said The research was detailed in a study, entitled ‘Fast charging aluminium chalcogen batteries resistent to dendritic shorting’, published in the scientific journal Nature According to the publiashed abstract: “Although batteries fitted with a metal negative electrode are attractive for their higher energy density and lower complexity, the latter making them more easily recyclable, the threat of cell shorting by dendrites has stalled deployment of the technology ”

Every aspect of fuel management demands extensive industry knowledge and experience, strict heal th and safety procedures and ad herence to al l the relevant legislat ion. When hydrocarbon fuel such as d iesel and kerosene is bul k stored without treatment for longer than 6 12 months it can become contaminated, reports LCM Environmental.

Dirty fuel ultimately is a threat to your critical systems loss of standby power, business continuity and could cost thousands in damages if left untreated, reports LCM Environmental Contaminants in your stored fuel are incredibly harmful to emergency generators and their ageing infrastructures as it can damage clog filters, fuel injectors If your tank has layers of buildup it can cause detrimental oil pollution spills from tank/pipe failure and overfills The key to avoiding diesel bug from growing and enduring high quality fuel in your tanks is simply good housekeeping

In May 2022 a major client of LCM Environmental contacted the company to uplift and transfer over 600,000 litres of kerosene from an 18 million litre storage tank

The client has always kept on top of fuel and tank maintenance, and the LCM Environmental team is regularly called upon for fuel or tank environment servicing Due to the significant size of the tank this involved a 6 day project and the LCM Environmental team arrived onsite to p erform a site audit and outline the scope of work required At this terminal site, due to the significant security and health and safety measures present, LCM Environmental obtained a special permit to conduct a case study and take photographs The LCM Environmental team uplifted 600,000 litres of kerosene from a single tank at the fuel terminal via ADR rated vacuum tankers and transferred this to another ta nk for safe storage All pipework was drained, yielding approximately 15,000 litres of additional kerosene per pipework run A man entry tank clean was performed on the 36 metres diameter tank, then it was jet washed and rag dried Whilst onsite, the technical team was asked to complete another man entry clean of a smaller gas oil holding tank Thanks to the efficiency of LCM’s operatives, they were able t o safely complete the main scope of works ahead of schedule and also undertake this additional task for the clientThe challenge of the job came from the sheer volume of fuel which required transferring, the remarkable dimensions of the kerosene tank, the tightened security measures at the fuel terminal and the tight timescale the team had to perform under, as well as the extensive health and safety measure s taken to ensure everyone’s wellbeingLCMEnvironmental’s client was left with a dry, clean and contaminate free 18 million litre storage tank ready to be refuelled

The company has scheduled in another tank clean for the additional kerosene tank for later in the summer and will complete a similar job to the same excellent standards

Included within this project the engineering team from LCM Environmental also undertook a man entry tank clean to remove all traces of sludge and contaminates before jet washing, ragging dry and draining back all the associated pipework All waste was disposed of appropriately via a licensed facilityKerosene is a combustible hydrocarbon fuel oil known by many names, such as Heating oil, boiler oil, kerosene, lamp oil and paraffin all of which refer to the same product It’s f requently used for heating, cooking, transportation, and a higher grade of it serves the aviation as jet fuel When left unchecked for long periods of time, kerosene can become contaminated with water particles and microbial growth, just like other types of liquid fuel stored in large tanks Spoiled kerosene can cause damage to your heating system, which can lead to an increase in expenses due to boiler re pairs or replacing your entire system You will burn less fuel with a cleaner system and massively decrease the chance of carbon monoxide poisoningFortunately, the client put trust in LCM Environmental’s years of expertise with maintaining its kerosene tank and ensuring it is kept safely within specification Regular tank maintenance is essential at terminal sites due to the sheer volume of product store d If a storage vessel, with tens of thousands of litres fuel, is contaminated it could result in significant financial damages

The activation of Energy Superhub Oxford’s cutting edge hybrid battery system, developed by Pivot Power, has been a significant event and underpins local and national clean power systems It also support the UK’s transition towards a zero carbon energy system

Once complete, the network could provide almost 10% of the energy storage that the UK is predicted to require by 2035 As the flagship Superhub city, Oxford is leading by example to show how ambitious local councils can accelerate their net zero plans The city recen tly set out its plans to reach net zero by 2040 and reduce emissions by 40% by 2030 Energy Superhub Oxford has also supported the installation of over 60 ground source heat pumps for social housing properties in Oxford, helping to alleviate the reliance on fossil fuel based heating that has pushed energy prices to record levels and placed increased strain on working families

Residents who have already r eceived ground source heat pumps in Oxford have reported running cost savings of over 50%

The project is also demonstrating the use of remote control to target times when renewable energy is most plentiful and lowest carbon This approach will reduce future electricity bills as heat pump installations scale from thousands to millions over the next decade

Councillor Imogen Thomas, Cabinet Member for Zero Carbon Oxford and Climate Justice, Oxford City Council, said: “Oxford has a history of being ambitious as we look to adopt new and exciting transport approaches in our city Redbridge was the location of the country’s first full running Park & Ride in 1973, and now almost 50 years later, we are home to Europe’s most powerful electric vehicle charging hub

Developing Power Technologies: Real World Operational Experience

Respondents to ACE’s most recent benchmarking study, show that all respondents with more than 500 staff have a dedicated ED&I strategy, with nearly nine out of ten (88%) stating that this approach has helped them to recruit a more diverse workforce, and three quarters’ (75%) retain it

Chris Friedler, Energy Efficiency Policy Manager at the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), said: “While doubling ECO should never have come at the expense of other energy efficiency schemes, recent media reports paint a gloomy picture for a policy that could have boosted protection for the most vulnerable households this winter. “Between the fires of this summer and a colder winter due to ever higher gas prices, there has never been a more obvious year to boost energy efficiency to tackle climate change and keep households safe”

There has never been a more obvious year to boost energy efficiency efforts, reports

The UK Government has awarded more than £54 million to innovative heat network projects in England, in a move the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) suggests will shield nearly 28,000 homes and businesses from costly fossil fuels

This one day Seminar is aimed at examining these records to see if the proposed rapid expansion of such technologies inspires confidence and to identify improvements necessary to achieve success as their deployment is rolled out IPowerE has organised speakers with considerable experience in each of these technologies for this one day Seminar which covers a wide range of relevant technologies and the day will be an excellent opportunity to meet others closely engaged in the various technologies and gain first hand experience of their progress With the added opportunities for networking and discussions in smaller groups during the day and the excellent venue, this should be both an informative and enjoyable day *****

Energy efficiency in buildings reduces demand for the heating and power of the indoor space through a combination of measures, such as insulation, draught proofing, and LED lighting The cheapest, safest and most secure form of energy is the energy we do not use That is why energy efficiency must be allowed to compete on equal terms with new supply capacity Energy efficiency means the construction of fewer new generating plants and reduced network infrastructure investment combined with greater resilience and lower carbon emissions £54 million to innovative heat network projects in England

Kieran Sinclair, Heat Policy Manager at the ADE, said: “We are delighted with the latest announcement from BEIS these projects represent thousands of homes and businesses that have moved from high carbon heating to the low carbon heat networks that will heat the UK for the decades to come This is the tip of the iceberg for the UK's heat networks and is vital to protecting UK consumers from high prices

Commenting on the completion of the Construction Innovation Hub’s Value Toolkit, Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) CEO Stephen Marcos Jones said: “The completion of the Value Toolkit is key to unlocking our industry’s huge potential and delivering the social, environmental and economic outcomes championed by government through the Net Zero and Levelling Up agendas. It will ensure we look beyond simplistic measures to deliver the healthy, green and productive built environment we all want to see “ACE and its members have been strong supporters throughout its development, and we will continue to work collaboratively with all stakeholders as the Toolkit moves to its implementation phase Now its impact has been demonstrated, we will need widespread adoption led by public sector clients to ensure the full transformative potential of the Toolkit is realised

Cummins Inc. has introduced the first units in a new range of generator sets targeting standby and prime power duties in mission critical, commercial and industrial applications. The new Centum Series generators are engineered to meet customers’ precise power needs with high efficiency engines that fit in a smaller footprint “Centum Series generators represent a significant shift in the Cummins approach to power system design, offering next level flexibility, efficiency and sustainability,” said Kunj Sheth, Global Marketing Director Mission Critical, Cummins

“The C1250D6E and C1500D6E are equipped with Cummins QSK38 engine, boasting over 2200 hp in an impressive 38 L platform,” Sheth said “The QSK38 engine has been used extensively in marine, military and other applications, where it has proven its durability and capability to perform for thousands of hours without intervention “It’s a higher efficiency engine, engineered to ensure you get the exact performance you need without having to pay more to install and maintain a larger generator set ”

Siemens Energy and Duke Energy’s gas power plant achieves UK GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ t itle MAN Engines’MAN E3872 series has been designed as a four stroke spark ignition gas engine with a displacement of 29 6 litres, a bore of 138 mm and a stroke of 165 mm With the 735 kWmech it produces, MAN Engines is now able to supply gas engines with a significantly higher power output. The MAN E3872 series is based on the proven and compact platform of the 25 8 litre MAN E3262 “MAN Engines is synonymous with robust engines that take up very little space The impressive output of 735 kWmech from a 12 cylinder engine is a customer oriented solution with undeniable added value in terms of serviceability, maintenance and operation costs,” says Reiner Roessner, Head of Sales at MAN Engines To achieve the significantly increased output of 735 kW, the engineers at MAN Engines have incorporated numerous conceptual innovations The basis for this is the existing crankcase of the MAN E3262, which has been in use since 2010 This means that empirical data from many millions of operating hours are available Given the fact that the bore has been increased from 132 mm to 138 mm and the stroke from 157 mm to 165 mm, steps were taken at the same time to increase the robustness of the crankcase Other fundamental differences relate primarily to the changes made to the turbo charger concept, the combustion process and the cylinder heads The upshot of this extensive development work is that the mechanical effective efficiency rate in the natural gas variant at 50 Hz has been increased to 44 0% “With such a high degree of efficiency, the profitability of a unit can be significantly increased,” says Roessner, enthusiastically Its high degree of efficiency makes the engine particularly suitable for applications where the focus is on the production of electricity and additional generation of heat Its high degree of mechanical efficiency and thus in electricity production has a correspondingly positive effect on the operator's energy balance The E3872 is using a hydraulic valve lash adjuster, which makes regular checking and adjustment of the valve train unnecessary Machine operators will benefit from the elimination of routine maintenance intervals and the resulting costs A variant which operates at a speed of 1800 rpm (60 Hz) is also in the pipeline for certain markets. As part of the process of converting the stationary natural gas engine portfolio to a state of “hydrogen readiness”, the new E3872 engine will also be designed to run with hydrogen admixture (H2) www man eu

The engines drive brushless, four pole single bearing Stamford S Series alternators with Class H Insulation and PMG (permanent magnet generator) excitation “across the board,” Sheth noted “Temperature rise offerings range from 80º to 150º C, offering robust solutions for applications requiring enhanced motor starting requirements or significant amounts of non linear loads ” Engine and generator functions are monitored and operated through the Cummins PowerCommand 3 3, an integrated microprocessor based control system that provides voltage regulation, engine and alternator protection and power management/paralleling functions in a single unit The system includes integral Cummins AmpSentry protection which provides a full range of alternator protection functions matched to the specific alternator, such as overcurrent warning and shutdown www.cummins.com Don’t miss the powerful MAN E3872 gas engine with 44 0% efficiency and 735 kW power output from just 12 cylinders

The first Centum units are the C1250D6E and C1500D6E gen sets Rated 1250 and 1500 kW standby and 1136 kW and 1364 kW prime/data center continuous, all at 60 Hz, both gen sets are powered by the Cummins QSK38 engine, a 12 cylinder vee configuration diesel with bore and stroke dimensions of 159 x 159 mm for an overall displacement of 37 8 L
