Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the subsequent war which has now rumbled on for over two years has had a profound effect on global energy markets. Price volatility, supply shortages, security issues and economic uncertainty have contributed to what the International Energy Agency (IEA) has called “the first truly global energy crisis, with an impact which will be felt for years to come.” Poorer countries - many still recovering from the effects of the global pandemic - bear the brunt of the negative consequences of the energy crisis. As the International Energy Agency (IEA) notes, “many of the contours of this new world are not yet fully defined, but there is no going back to the way things were”. According to a CNN International report, more than 80,000 diesel & gas generators were imported into Ukraine in late 2022. The report also states that 3,075 power transformers were brought into the country. Additionally, a further 266,596 power banks and accumulators were imported. Ukriform states that since then 269,500 power generators were brought to Ukraine, while another THE WAR HAS HAD A 20,000 were imported by individuals since 2022. PROFOUND EFFECT ON The UK government has donated a total of 856 mobile generators to ENERGY MARKETS & Ukraine, with a further 287 generators being donated. SUPPLY CHAINS.” However, import figures for 2023 are unavailable. Manufacturers have faced a sharp rise in costs as the conflict undermines global supply chains. Mike Thornton, the head of manufacturing at the accountancy firm RSM, said publicly: “As the Russia-Ukraine conflict unfolds, UK manufacturers should brace for some additional headwinds. The surge in energy prices is the most obvious for heavy industry.” Russia was formerly the world’s largest exporter of natural gas and among the top suppliers of crude oil and metals including palladium, platinum, gold and aluminium. The nation is also a major producer of metals such as titanium, nickel, cobalt and lithium - all used in electronic circuitry. “Shortages of components, such as microchips, could continue and expand into other areas as sanctions and export restrictions limit supply that feed into the wider supply chain,” Thornton added. Soaring energy costs and supply chain disruptions and western sanctions have certainly add to inflationary pressures. Perhaps the most noticeable change for most people is the rise in energy prices. The IEA says high fuel costs account for 90% of the rise in average costs for electricity generation worldwide. One potentially positive aspect of higher fossil fuel prices is they have provided an incentive to move towards sustainable alternatives. However , the need for energy security has meant further investment in ‘dirty’ fossil fuel projects. Russia cut gas flows to the EU by around 80% in 2022, leaving the bloc with a significant shortfall in its energy mix, triggering the need for energy alternatives.

POWERING THE WORLD’S LONGEST IMMERSED TUNNEL PROJECT BETWEEN GERMANY & DENMARK FPT Industrial is actively involved in building the Fehmarnbelt tunnel between Denmark and Germany, the world’s longest immersed tunnel with a length of 11 miles, which will be the fastest route between Scandinavia and Central Europe. Through its distributor rBimotor, FPT Industrial, the Iveco Group brand dedicated to the design, production, and sale of low-environmental impact powertrains, provided its F36 Stage V engines for power generation to CGM, a leading producer of gensets. CGM gensets powered by FPT Industrial engines are currently operating at the immense worksite that also includes the largest concrete factory in the world. Due for completion by 2029 and co-financed by the European Commission, the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is composed of 79 standard and 10 special elements. Each standard element is 217 m long, weighs 73,500 tonnes, and contains two tubes for motorway, two for railway, and a service passage. When an element is ready for shipment, it gets waterproof bulkheads fitted at both ends and is towed into place using tugs. The elements are then lowered into the 12m-deep tunnel trench dredged on the seabed and are carefully coupled together. This high-precision work requires a large amount of always ready, reliable energy, and that’s where the CGM gensets powered by FPT Industrial engines come in. The F36 engine for CGM’s gensets meets Stage V / Tier 4F emissions requirements and features high performance (up to 100 kVA PRP at 50 Hz) and high efficiency. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

IN BRIEF 80MW DATA CENTRE PROJECTS WITH FUEL CELL BACK UP Bloom Energy SK ecoplant will be using Bloom’s innovative fuel cell technology when it builds a new data centre in Singapore for GDS, China’s largest data centre developer. The Singapore Economic Development Board and the Infocomm Media Development Authority selected GDS as part of a group of four data centre operators that will share in what could eventually be about 80 megawatts of new capacity for Singapore’s information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. “Bloom Energy is excited to be a partner with SK and provide our Energy Servers to power a GDS data center in Singapore,” says Bloom Energy Founder, Chairman and CEO, KR Sridhar. “The grid constraint in Singapore is similar to the lack of power availability in most data center hubs around the world today.”

FUEL CELL-POWERED DATA CENTRE PLANNED IN IRELAND SK Ecoplant and Lumcloon Energy are planning a new data centre in Ireland which will rely on gas-powered fuel cells rather than a grid connections. The agreement was signed between the Irish development company and SK Group’s construction subsidiaryin November 2023 during an Irish trade mission to South Korea. The fuel cells will apparently be powered by natural gas initially “Together they’re going to build Europe’s first fuel cell powered data center in Ireland, which I think is strategically very important because, of course, the energy that data centers use and the pressure that puts on the grid and the carbon footprint of data centers has been a source of a lot of political debate in the last number of years,” said Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Simon Coveney. The Minister explained:: “If we can build data centres that are powered by fuel cell technology, initially gas, but in the future hydrogen, then that really does change the dynamic in that area, which I think is very exciting. And they’re very anxious to make this work and to show that Europe’s first fuel cell power data centre can effectively become a template for many other data centers in the future.” Founded in 2008, Offaly-based Lumcloon is a developer of energy infrastructure. Projects listed on the company’s website include two Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – one 100MW live project and a future planned 63MW project.

MARKET REPORT

JAN/FEB 2024

GENERATOR SET MARKET ANALYSIS 2023 - 2027

A

ccording to Grand View Research the global generator sets market size was valued at US$23.9 billion in 2019 and is projected to progress at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1% up to 2027. Growing demand for reliable and uninterrupted power supply from end-use sectors such as power generation, telecom, manufacturing and construction, marine, oil and gas, residential, healthcare, and the chemical is expected to drive the market in the coming years. Worldwide the genset market size exceeded US$ 38.5 billion in 2022, reports Global Market Insights. Rapid industrialization and increasing infrastructure investments will further spur industry expansion, says GMI. Rapid industrialization, infrastructure development, and continuous population growth are among the key factors pacing power demand globally. The rising penetration of electronic load requires generator sets to provide electricity supply during power outages and prevent the disruption of daily business activities. In U.S., the market is expected to witness significant growth on account of rising consumer awareness towards reliable emergency power backup and growing costs of power outages at data centres and other IT enable service firms. In addition, the industry is primarily driven by the increasing vulnerability of grid power infrastructure to weather caused disasters across the region. Even though diesel generator sets have low initial investment and low operating costs, the gas generator sets are expected to witness a higher penetration rate over the coming years. Stringent regulations regarding control of the high level of carbon emissions are projected to restrict the demand for diesel generator sets across all the end-use sectors. Industry solution providers in the market are generally responsible for the manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of the generator system. Residential areas, commercial places, and small companies using generator sets for emergency power backup establish maintenance contracts with electrical contractors or generator dealers. Large companies which own several generator units need an in house monitoring engineer to overlook and supervise their generator sets. Fuel Type Insights The diesel segment occupied a dominant market share of 68.6% in 2019 owing to its better fuel efficiency and low operating costs. Longer engine lifespan, reliable performance, high flexibility, and enhanced scalability are www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

NORTH AMERICA HAS THE 2ND LARGEST MARKET SHARE - IT IS PROJECTED TO GROW AT A SIGNIFICANT CAGR DURING THE FORECAST PERIOD, BEING THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO REGIONAL GROWTH. are among the key factors sustaining the competitiveness of diesel generator sets across the market. The gas segment is projected to witness substantial market growth with a CAGR of 8.9 % over the forecast period. The growth can be credited to stringent regulations regarding emission control along with increasing concerns over energy security and the consumption of fossil fuels. For instance, natural gas emits a lower amount of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulphur emissions compared to oil or coal. Moreover, the growing availability of natural gas substantiated by the shale gas boom will propel market expansion. The low power generator segment accounted for the largest market share of 43.7% in 2019 in terms of revenue and was valued at US$10.4 billion in 2019. Low power generators find the majority of applications in residential and commercial sectors. Generator sets with not more than 80 kW capacity are used as a backup power solution in households to power devices such as AC units, geysers, water purifiers, and water pumps. Moreover, the low price of small generator sets is expected to boost the demand for generator sets over the coming years. The medium power generator segment occupied the second largest

market revenue share of 43.7% in 2019 and is projected to grow at the fastest CAGR over the forecast period. Rising demand for medium power generator sets from developing economies such as Brazil, China, and India for clean fuel in emergency backup power systems in industrial and commercial applications is expected to propel segment growth in the next seven years. The dominant position of medium power generators is attributed to its use in small-scale industries, commercial complexes, petrol stations, and telecom sector, as a primary source of power in off grid areas and as an emergency power supply in grid connected areas. High power generators find the majority of applications in sectors where there is a requirement for continuous power supply such as manufacturing, marine, and power sector. As the direct power supply is not possible at several remote places, the high power generator sets are installed for the generation and distribution of power across the remote area. The commercial segment accounted for the largest revenue share of 44.7% in 2019 and is anticipated to register a significant growth rate providing power for healthcare, telecom, aquaculture, agriculture, government centres, data centres and hospitality sectors.

JAN/FEB 2024

IMPRESSIVE ENERGY TRANSITION IN DUISBERG, GERMANY

A

bout a decade ago, the Duisburg Central power plant was a 100MW coal power plant. After the shutdown, municipal utility provider Stadtwerke Duisburg AG converted it into a modern gas power plant. The new power plant is driven by eight MWM gas generator sets. In the past, the flue gases from the coal-fired power generation were desulpurised in the 40m building in Duisburg’s Hochfeld district. Since mid-2023, heat and power are being generated there using a total of eight natural gas-fired cogeneration power plants for combined heat and power generation. It took just under three years from the award of the contract in 2020 to the commissioning in mid-2023. “Quite fast”, says Marco Weiß, Managing Director of ETW Energietechnik, the general contractor responsible for the construction work and installation. “Setting up the new power plant in the existing building was a major feat”, adds Mirko Kehren, deputy ETW project manager for the gas power plant. Before the seven new MWM gas generator sets (the first had already been installed in 2018) could be commissioned, intensive preparation was necessary, as many of the existing steel structures in the building had to be taken into consideration in the planning. As a result, it was not possible to install the seven CHP units in the same way. Instead, all of the sound enclosures had to be adapted to the available space. In addition, the original floor slab, some of which had a basement underneath, was not strong enough to support the CHP units. Therefore, it had to be elaborately supported with the help of 36 reinforced concrete piles, each 22m long, and then be replaced with a new, 70cm-thick floor slab. “We used 350 t of additional steel, plus several miles of piping and cables”, explains Mirko Kehren, providing some construction-related figures. The project is not yet finished. In 2024, an iCHP plant that is part of the Central power plant is to go live in Duisburg Huckingen. The municipal utility provider has invested some €40m in the large new hydrogen-capable cogeneration power plant in Duisburg. “With the new Central gas power plant, we can supply about 30,000 households in Duisburg with power and about 20,000 households with district heating”, says Manfred Lehman, project manager at Stadtwerke Duisburg. He goes on: “The development of the Central power plant into a flexible, hydrogen-capable CHP plant is one of our first major steps toward carbon-free energy generation by 2035.”

www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

Large cogeneration power plant with total output of 31.5 MWel Each of the seven new MWM TCG 2032B V16 gas generator sets is capable of delivering an electrical output of 4.5 MW and a heat output of 5.1 MW. The power plant has an electrical efficiency of 44.0 percent and a thermal efficiency of 49.4 percent. The plants are power-controlled in a flexible manner. Like all new MWM gas gensets, they are capable of running on hydrogen. The heat generation by the engines is especially efficient due to the downstream exhaust heat exchangers. They extract heat both at high temperatures and at low temperatures, which can be fed into Duisburg’s district heating network. Two additionally-installed heat pumps that use the temperature of

the mixture cooling in a second step make the overall system even more efficient. The MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas generator set installed back in 2018 supplies power for the power plant operation. In addition to the existing eight MWM generator sets, two more MWM TCG 2032B V16 generator sets have already been ordered and are set to be commissioned in 2024. They belong to the lineup of the Duisburg Central power plant and serve the operation of the new iCHP power plant in Duisburg Wanheim. Once the final development stage is reached in 2024, a total of 10 MWM gas generator sets will deliver 41.5 MW of electrical power for the energy transition in Duisburg. The equipment provided includes items such as generator sets, switchgear containers , transformers, synchronisation Container and NGRs. The NGR is the Neutral Grounding Resistor, which is used in the electrical system to protect the transformer and generator. As the name suggests, the neutral ground resistor connects the neutral point of a transformer or generator to the ground. A Neutral Ground Resistor (NGR) is made using materials such as Stainless Steel and Nickel Chromium Alloy (NiCr). These materials have a stable resistance which does not change with temperature. Porcelain and ceramic are used to support the resistor elements. The primary purpose of an NGR (neutral ground resistor) is to limit the ground fault current that can flow in the event of a fault in the system. This helps prevent excessive currents and associated damage to equipment during a ground fault. The main components in a typical generator container include the following items: -ENGINE: Perkins engine with tropical radiator, Engine Model: 4012 46 TAG3A - ALTERNATOR: Leroy Somer, Alternator Model: LSA 50.2 VL10, Low Voltage -NGR - Control panel (ComAp)

Future Energy Security

UK MUST MAKE SERIOUS MOVES AT HOME TO LEAD THE WORLD ON CLIMATE ACTION The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has called for the UK to support COP28’s global goals to triple renewable capacity and double the annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030. Chris Friedler, Senior Policy Manager at the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), said: “The CCC’s report is clear. If the UK wants to continue to lead the world in tackling the climate crisis, it must first make serious moves at home. It must build, not slide, on a history of wise and successful policy. The key to rolling out more renewable energy will be a more flexible, resilient grid of the future, and the ADE supports the CCC’s view that the Government needs to go much further in reducing energy use in the building sector.” He explains: “One of the UK’s next steps after COP28 should be to progress the next part of the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA), so industry can help shape and plan the renewable future we need. So too must the government further embrace innovative green finance for home retrofit, boosting energy efficiency and dealing with the cost-of-living crisis at the same time.” ******************************** The review of electricity market arrangements (REMA) consultation opened on 18 July 2022 and closed on 10 October 2022. REMA encompasses all electricity-related (non-retail) markets, and all technologies are within scope to the extent that they currently do, or potentially could, participate in these electricity markets. Government consulted on a range of issues and options related to electricity market reform across a number of market dimensions, including wholesale markets, mass low carbon power, flexibility, capacity adequacy and system operability.
