India’s Government has just imposed stringent new controls on the nation’s gensets. As from October 1st, 2023, diesel generator sets producing more than 19kW will only be allowed to operate in the National Capital Region (NCR) if they have been retrofitted with emission control devices (ECDs) or with dual fuel kits, according to regulations announced by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Environmentalists have largely welcomed the move, but residents of Gurugram and Noida - two cities which face frequent power outages - said the decision will cause hardship, and pointed to the high cost of converting DG sets to a dual fuel setup. Under new regulations industries, commercial buildings, and residential setups have a time limit on retrofitting their diesel gensets. The rules state that there will be no exceptions under Graded Response Action Plan (Grap) - a set of emergency measures to tackle air pollution - which currently apply. Previously, diesel gensets with relatively few emission controls were allowed to be used. These INDIA HAS INTRODUCED often provided power backup for essential and emergency services NEW LEGISLATION TO such as lifts, transport hubs, healthcare facilities, Metro stations, CURB EMISSIONS FROM sewage treatment plants or telecommunication and data DIESEL GENERATOR SETS.” service facilities. The CAQM regulations state that diesel gensets below 19 kW in power, or any generator sets running on LPG, natural gas, biogas, propane or butane, do not require retrofitting, and will also not be restricted during India’s Grap period. Diesel gensets between 19-125 kW will be required to run on a dual fuel mode of natural gas and diesel. CAQM said for such DG sets, there will be no restrictions on their use, except during Grap, when they will be permitted to run for a maximum of two hours. For diesel gensets with a power capacity of 125-800 kW, CAQM said they will be required to be run both on a dual fuel mode and will have to be retrofitted with ECDs. However, there will be no restrictions on such sets, even during Grap. For gensets with a capacity of over 800kW, operators will either have to retrofit them with dual fuel kits or with ECDs, with these sets again facing restrictions only during Grap, where they will be allowed to run for a maximum of two hours. Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director, research and advocacy at the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said the move to phase out diesel sets is important to improve air quality across NCR. “Emissions from DG sets are a sustained source, which over time leads to toxic exposure, particularly to those working around or near them. In addition to comprehensive guidelines for the retrofitting of ECDs and monitoring, we also need to ensure uninterrupted power supply through NCR and for that, CAQM needs to work with electricity distribution companies [discoms],” she said.

A LONG TERM CARE FACILITY IN MISSISSAUGA, USA, INSTALLS THREE 1000 KW DIESEL GENSETS PARAMOUNT POWER SYSTEMS has supplied a longterm Care Facility (LTCF): Facilities providing a spectrum of medical and non-medical supports and services to frail or older adults unable to reside independently in the community. Paramount Power says it has now completed the commissioning for these 3x 1000kW T4 compliant paralleled generators for a large LTCF in Mississauga. All the generators were designed, built and tested by Paramount Power Systems. The gensets feature an automatic transfer switch (ATS) - this is a component which allows a power system to “sense” when commercial power fails, will start the generators and switch to emergency power sources automatically. Having a well-maintained automatic transfer switch (ATS) is as critical as having a well-maintained generator, says Paramount. A critical factor is maintaining a “hands-free” automated system to help ensure the safety of facilities personnel and community. A spokesman commented: “Paramount Power provides a comprehensive scheduled maintenance program consisting of monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections. This program is custom tailored to your individual needs to ensure rapid and trustworthy response of our clients’ systems at the most critical times of need. “We provide emergency field service, fuel, oil, coolant & DEF testing, fuel polishing, fuel tank cleaning, switchgear repair, and LP gas systems repair. “Additional services available are emergency standby power, triple shift rentals for continuous power, event rentals and power distribution cabling, panels, automatic transfer switches (ATS) rentals, delivery & pick up, event evaluation, and set up. “ www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE 2023 EVENT *THE RT. HON DR ALAN WHITEHEAD MP Dr. Alan Whitehead MP is a British politician who has served as Member of Parliament for Southampton Test since 1997. A member of the Labour Party, he has been Shadow Minister for Energy Security, previously Green New Deal and Energy, since 2015. He served as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions from 2001 to 2002. Dr Whitehead has lobbied for the increased use of sustainable energy sources, particularly microgeneration. He criticised the results of the Energy Review, and was the co-author of EDM 2204 which states ‘the case for nuclear has not yet been made’ and urged the government to ‘recognise the enormous potential for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by energy efficiency and conservation, greater use of combined heat and power, and rapid investment in the full range of renewable technologies, including microgeneration. As leader of Southampton City Council in 1986, Mr Whitehead proposed that the city council take measures to become a ‘self sustaining city’ with regard to energy generation. One such measure was the conversion of Southampton Civic Centre to being heated by local reservoirs of geothermal energy. Mr Whitehead sits as a nonexecutive director of the non-profit making SSEL Ltd formed to deliver a CHP project, which was partially funded by the Government as part of the regeneration of outer Shirley. The system recycles the byproduct ‘low grade heat’ made during the electricity generation process.

CHP HELPS SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING SITE DELIVER A LOW CARBON BUSINESS
D
ynex, a world-leading designer and manufacturer of high-power semiconductors and assemblies, is benefiting from an Edina installed and maintained Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution as part of its sustainability measures. Key benefits: •Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant provides electricity on-site thus reducing grid imports •CHP plant protects Dynex Semiconductor from volatile energy market •CHP generates 75% of the sites hot water demand for heating •Hydrogen-ready asset Edina, a distributed energy solutions provider, was contracted to design, engineer, install, commission, and maintain the 1.56MW electrical output Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at Dynex Semiconductors’ Lincoln manufacturing facility. The move to accelerate on-site generation CHP was driven by the volatile energy market and the need to manage rising energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and improve energy-efficiency measures at the site by replacing old inefficient gas boilers. Dynex is one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the design, development and production of High-Power Semiconductor modules and Power Assemblies used within industrial, traction, renewable and power grid, electric vehicles, fusion energy, and hydrogen electrolysis applications. The CHP plant, powered by a single MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas genset, produces the site’s electrical requirement, thus offsetting grid imported power. The heat from the electrical generation process is captured and utilised on-site to provide 75% of the hot water demand for temperature and humidity control within the manufacturing areas. In doing so, CHP provision reduces the boiler house demand for hot water generation and energy costs onsite. Improving Energy Efficiency Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is the cogeneration of electricity and heat from a single fuel source. CHP forms part of Dynex’s sustainability and low-carbon measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon and water footprint. The CHP plant offers high-efficiency energy utilisation of 95%. Because electricity and heat are produced and used on-site, Dynex will avoid transmission and distribution losses – typically around 7.5% that occur in transporting electricity from the grid. Further sustainability measures include 200kW roof-mounted solar PV, which generates an average of 42,952kWh/year, site-wide LED lighting rollout, and improvements in waste recycling. These are just some of the measures enacted as part of Dynex’s commitment to the UK Government’s Climate Change Agreement (CCA) which sets energy reduction targets for the semiconductor industry.
within budget and is maintaining the plant over a 15-year life cycle. According to the latest 2022 plant availability performance data, the Dynex CHP is averaging a strong hourly availability at over 98% set against a 92.5% industry standard benchmark. As the authorised official distributor for MWM gas gensets, Dynex are benefitting from Edina’s in-market support leveraging its local field services engineers, 24/7 remote plant monitoring and conditioning, and access to genuine MWM parts to ensure the CHP plant remains operational and downtimes are at a minimum. Project Challenges Working with Dynex and their incumbent mechanical team, Edina were challenged with dovetailing the programme for civil works, CHP installation and commissioning, with Dynex’s own extensive programme to overhaul the full heating and power networks within the site. From civil works design and installation to lifting operations and final operational testing, both Dynex and
Edina worked in synergy to ensure minimum impact to ongoing operations. A further testament to both teams that the project delivery took place during the COVID Pandemic and the unique challenges this posed. Adam Bloom, Head of Sales, Edina, said “Working with Dynex we were able to deliver a support solution to reduce their dependency on the grid, allowing them to take control of their energy requirements and support their long-term sustainable measures.” The Dynex CHP plant is fuelled using low-carbon transitionary natural gas and can accommodate hydrogen admixtures of up to 10% without modification to the MWM gas genset. As the gas network greens up and greater concentrates of hydrogen are blended into the existing gas network, the MWM gas genset can accommodate 25% hydrogen blends with some technical modification to ensure the safety and best-possible performance and efficiency. www.mwm.net
Scope of Works As principal contractor, Edina designed and engineered the CHP engine within an acoustically treated weatherproof enclosure for ease of installation and ongoing asset-care access. A NEW 1250KVA GENSET INSTALLED AT ONE OF THE BIGGEST BAKERIES IN PORTUGAL
H
ANNAIK won the contract to supply a 1250kVA genset to one of the biggest bakeries in Portugal. This system has been equipped with a monoblock chassis as well as with a MTU V16 cylinder engine and a STAMFORD alternator. The genset was built by Hannaik based on a modular construction technology with ISO and soundproofed maritime containers. It also has features such as C5M painting and emergency doors with horizontal push bars, with internal lighting adjusted to the maintenance and work areas. This range also includes external signals, as well as a set of extras compatible with the clients’ application needs and requirements. The generator is considered a suitable solution for intensive use in areas such as industry, commerce, Telecom, data centres, transportation, construction, health, events, and others. The MTU 16V is a diesel engine manufactured by MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. It is designed for use in a variety of genset applications. The 16V is a high-performance engine with 16 cylinders arranged in a V-configuration. A spokesman for Hannaik comments: “To guarantee the correct functioning of any generator, it is essential that its components work properly and for this reason, there are some special key components: “The fuel pre-filter, for example, has the function of separating the water from the fuel and removing residues that are present in it, preventing them from being pumped into the engine where they can cause oxidation issues, corrosion and cavitation in the cylinders.” Hannaik sees the inclusion of the fuel pre-filter as a means to improve the performance of the engine and extend its lifetime, including the lifespan of all the components of the fuel circuit. The fuel pre-filter is recommended for generators which are inactive for a long period of time and for locations where the available fuel is of poor quality or has been mixed with other elements which may affect the correct operation of the equipment. In addition, Hannaik recommends that after using the the fuel pre-filter ithe operator must check its condition during regular maintenance periods in order to keep it performing its function. Hannaik’s generators allow the installation of the fuel pre-filter, whenever it is requested by its customers.
Generators from the Hannaik industrial range are solutions suitable for intensive use in areas such as industry, commerce, telecom, data centres, transport, construction, health, events, etc. This range integrates solutions with a power range from 11 kVA to 800 kVA, frequencies of 50 Hz and 60 Hz and different fuel types, such as: diesel, petrol or gas. The Industrial range is built under a modular construction principle, which allows easier maintenance and a longer lifetime of the equipment. This range can be customised with steel canopies, stainless steel or aluminium and with C5M painting. They can be configured for an automatic start or in parallel with any other power source. According to the manufacturer,
the industrial range of generators stands out because of the design of its air intake, which is a determinant for higher acoustic attenuation. Hannaik says it offers a large number of extras which can be provided for this type of equipment, always taking into account user requirements such as: pre-heating resistors, automatic transfer pumps, Ethernet control, among others. hannaik.com

POWER GENERATORS SETS HAVE A VITAL ROLE TO PLAY IN REGIONAL EMERGENCIES
I
t has been six years since Hurricane Maria devastated the northeastern Caribbean in September 2017. Even though electricity has long since been restored across the island, the demand for backup power sources remains high for businesses, schools, hospitals, utilities, government facilities and private homes. In this article we shine a spotlight on the vital role of off-grid power generation systems. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria struck the northeast Caribbean. The unrelenting storm destroyed the island of Puerto Rico’s power grid, leaving 95% of its residents without electricity and more than half with no tap water. “We live in the Caribbean, where, unfortunately, we are constantly exposed to the hurricane season,” said Rubén Aguilar, General Manager of Volvo Penta partner RK Power Generator, based in San Juan. “Hurricanes always strike this region, affecting us and our energy system.” Beyond being a mecca for travellers who appreciate its pristine beaches and magnificent natural beauty, Rubén says Puerto Rican locals take pride in the rich culture and strong sense of community on the island. He feels fortunate that his business helps protect residents during harsh weather emergencies. When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on September 20th, RK Power, the only manufacturer of generators in the Caribbean, had 200 Volvo Pentapowered generators operating throughout Puerto Rico. One of Rubén’s customers, the Aqueduct & Sewage Authority, owns about 10% of those generators. These machines provide backup power during outages, allowing sanitary water to keep flowing toward treatment plants and providing a safe drinking water supply. Aqueduct & Sewage Authority Supervisor Jose Santiago said he worked 10 to 12-hour days after the storm to ensure the standby gensets powering his wastewater and lift pump were working. “Not having an available generator could put us at risk of a sanitary sewer overflow in the event of a power failure,” says Jose. “In emergency situations we seek a reliable energy source. It’s been a really positive experience since we’ve had this generator.” Jose says he counts on portable generators powered by Volvo Penta D5 Tier 4 Final engines to provide more mobility, decreased diesel fuel usage and a team to offer expert support and service.

He said: “Volvo Penta is one of those strategic partners that aid us with new solutions, new tendencies, new engineering, and allow us to have a high-quality team. In this moment I feel a lot more prepared to face situations such as Hurricane Maria.” RK Power had 200 Volvo Penta-powered generators operating throughout Puerto Rico during Hurricane Maria Efficient and powerful D5 Volvo Penta’s D5 Tier 4 Final industrial engine delivers maximum horsepower and torque at low speed, with minimal noise levels. Efficient injection and a robust engine design and technology contribute to excellent combustion performance and low fuel consumption. Standby power engines from Volvo Penta give customers the assurance that they have a backup energy supply in place to maximize uptime and keep vital functions running. A
complete line of industrial power generation engines from Volvo Penta is made with unmatched load support and the reliability our partners need in all sorts of uncertain climates. Reliability when it matters most While fuel-efficient Tier 4 Final engines produce emissions low enough to qualify them to run constantly, RK Power customers in Puerto Rico like Aqueduct & Sewage Authority rely on generators fitted with these engines to provide predictable standby power, especially during weather disasters like Hurricane Maria. Joel Contreras, Regional Sales Manager for Volvo Penta and account manager for RK Power, says that if the power were to go out at Jose Santiago’s substation, there would be a severe issue with wastewater accumulating and not being pumped out. This would cause a health emergency for many residents of

Puerto Rico. “For an application like this, when there are health concerns, you need a reliable engine that’s going to perform when it needs to, especially considering the weather,” says Joel. “The power grid in Puerto Rico is not the greatest, so having an engine that’s reliable and that will start up and be able to perform as needed is crucial for both RK Power and Volvo Penta.” Volvo Penta has a complete line of industrial power generation engines to support customer needs Global support When a Volvo Penta D5 engine needs routine maintenance, service points are easy to access, and optional equipment makes it possible to remote mount filters. Volvo Penta offers customers the support of more than 900 dealers in more than 130 markets, as well as close cooperation with other Volvo Group companies. This translates into a global dealer network, characterized by local expertise and a world-class parts distribution network. The Volvo Penta Action Service 24/7 support is available in 28 different languages, meaning someone is always prepared to assist. Rubén says all the perks of a Volvo Penta and RK Power partnership make it easy to do business in a community that he loves to see flourish, despite challenges. “We feel deeply proud to be able to deliver these solutions, providing reliability to the customers,” says Rubén, who now supplies 650 generators throughout Puerto Rico. “We trust that Volvo Penta as a strategic partner will continue to provide us with professional solutions to all the requirements of our progress.” Features of the Volvo Penta D5 industrial engine The Volvo Penta D5 industrial engine is an in-line 4cylinder, 5.1-litre engine. It features low cost of ownership and world-class fuel efficiency. This is also combined with a reliable Exhaust Aftertreatment System (EATS) which gives high uptime as well as low cost of ownership. System concepts lower the amount of cooling capacity needed hence minimising the radiator size. Hardware interfaces are compatible with engines of earlier legislations and installation guidelines as well as drawings and CAD models are easy to access. Material needed in order to install the engine can be ordered as optional equipment from Volvo Penta. The result is an engine and EATS that is easy to install and operate. Durability & low noise Long experience with DPF/SCR systems in combination with great knowledge of base engine development reduces risk of downtime. The in-line four cylinder

BESS UNITS PROVIDED TO A KEY MICROSOFT DATA CENTRE BUILT IN SWEDEN
S
aft has commissioned four battery energy storage system (BESS) units at a Microsoft data centre in Sweden,. The BESS units from Saft, part of oil and gas major TotalEnergies, went into operation in June 2023 at Microsoft’s sustainable data centre in Sweden, as part of the tech giant’s path to remove diesel from the energy mix at its data centres by 2030. Saft provided four groups of systems totalling 4MWh each, providing 1 hour and 20 minutes of energy storage discharge duration. Cedric Duclos, Saft’s CEO said: “Saft deployed the BESS over 16 months following Microsoft’s approach to data centre architecture. “This focuses on safety and reliability by creating backup systems in groups that work independently to ensure a high level of redundancy. As well as displacing the diesel generator, the BESS supports grid stability and provides black start capability to ensure rapid recovery of the power grid in the case of an outage.” A senior manager at Microsoft said it wants to roll out battery storage at its data centres worldwide while at the Energy Storage Summit EU in London earlier this year. In 2022 Saft won a turnkey contract for a 7MWh battery energy storage system in a Norwegian archipelago which it claims is the largest in the Arctic. Saft delivered the 6MW/7MWh system to the Longyearbyen community on the island of Svalbard in late 2022. The bulk of Svalbard’s population of slightly under 3,000 people live there. The lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) BESS is housed in six containers based on Saft’s Intensium Max High Energy technology and feature a fully integrated solution including power conversion and control systems. The installation means Longyearbyen effectively cut its emissions by 100% over time. Joachim Karlsen, Longyearbyen Council’s project manager, tcomments: “The city has ambitions to achieve a zero-emission energy system in 2030, and this will inevitably include other renewable energy sources than solar alone.”

The BESS unit is housed next to a coal-fired power station to provide reserve capacity and overcome fluctuations, as well as backup power. The coal station has closed and the BESS provides voltage and frequency control to integrate diesel generators and growing amounts of renewable energy. Joachim Karlsen, Longyearbyen Council’s project manager, comments: “We selected Saft after a competitive bidding process that evaluated price, quality and capability to deliver. “One aspect we particularly liked about Saft is its experience and proven high reliability with similar systems for remote communities in northern Canada and Alaska. That has given us extra reassurance that their team has what it takes to deliver this complex project in harsh Arctic conditions and that their technology will provide us with reliability and
security of supply.” The Saft BESS is said to offer excellent cycling capability both in shallow and deep cycling, which is very well suited for use cases like Longyearbean, where storage operation patterns change over time as power generation and consumption mix evolve. LFP is said to be operating well at low temperatures, and is easier to manage with regards to safety. The Saft ESS comes with full remote monitoring capabilities. Its systems allow real-time monitoring of all operational data, alarm management, maintenance optimisation and other value-adding functionalities. Saft carried out its final commissioning during the 2022 winter to demonstrate the system’s tolerance for the intense Arctic winter. www.saft.com

NEW HIGH HORSEPOWER ENGINE REBUILD FACILITY OPENS IN KRAKOW, POLAND
C
ummins has unveiled its brand-new European Master Rebuild Centre for high horsepower engines in Krakow, Poland – the first of its kind in Europe. The company has invested $10 million in the development of the Centre, which remanufactures Cummins high horsepower engines with displacements of 19 to 78 litres, and in the 450 to 3500 horsepower range. This includes Cummins’ renowned QSK19, QSK38 and QSK60 engines. The new 4,600m2 facility has been developed to increase Cummins’ capacity to meet growing demand across several sectors for high horsepower engines, rebuilt and tested to the highest quality standards in a factory environment. This strategic move will enhance Cummins’ services in Europe, meeting the needs of new and existing customers across the region. Cummins rebuilt engines are increasingly becoming the first option for customers who want reduced costs and greater engine uptime. Cummins engine rebuilds go through a six-stage remanufacturing process that sees the engine disassembled, cleaned, inspected, re-machined, reassembled with Genuine Cummins parts and tested. As a result, the engine’s life is extended, and its performance is enhanced. A Cummins rebuilt engine has a much shorter lead time than a factory ordered engine and performs to the same specification as a new engine with a typical cycle time of 35 working days. A remanufactured engine provides up-front savings for customers when compared with a new, first-fit engine, increasing revenue and efficiency. Cummins will offer a range of rebuild and remanufacture options at the Centre. Its Ultimate Remanufacture solution sees the full dismantling and reassembling of the engine, with the replacement of all worn components with Cummins Genuine parts, including wear and tear components. Ultimate Remanufacture engines have a full factory warranty equivalent to a new engine. The company chose to locate the Centre in Krakow for several reasons. It is close to an international airport and major highway, centrally located within Cummins’ European network, and near to several large-scale industrial operations which are reliant on top-end Cummins power, as well as new customers. It also benefits from the highly skilled team that were based at Cummins’ already existing Krakow site.

It is the newest of 13 Cummins Master Rebuild Centres around the world, all providing rebuilds in factory environments. Ann-Kristin de Verdier, Executive Managing Director for Cummins’ Europe Distribution Business, said: “We’re thrilled that this state-of-theart facility has officially opened. It is the result of a significant and strategic investment to deliver more choice to our customers across Europe, ultimately helping them to reduce costs and boost productivity. “Cummins has been manufacturing diesel engines for over 100 years, and while we would always be happy to supply customers with a new engine, if there is a way to keep an existing engine working to peak performance then that should be the first option. That’s why we have built this new Centre.” The new European Master Rebuild Centre is an integral feature of a new base in Krakow, which is home to a warehouse, workshop and
administrative offices. The new Centre is expected to be key in Cummins’ wider growth strategy in Poland and across Europe. Cummins’ also developed the new facility to support its Destination Zero and Planet 2050 commitments to environmental sustainability. It features solar panels, charging points, a high-tech microbiological wash bay which reuses 100% of water used onsite and other state-of-the-art solutions. The engine remanufacturing process also requires 85% less energy than manufacturing new engines, and reduces the use of raw materials, packaging and the production of scrap metal. The European Master Rebuild Centre was officially opened at an event last month attended by several senior Cummins’ leaders, local dignitaries and international press. www.cummins.com

SUPPORTING SURE’S DATA CENTRES ON NET-ZERO PATH IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS
L
eading Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) supplier CENTIEL has completed a project to deploy its award-winning 4th generation, threephase, modular UPS system CumulusPowerTM in three of Sure’s Tier III data centres on Guernsey. Sure’s data centres on the Channel Islands keep some of Europe’s largest organisations’ critical data safe and secure in a location outside of mainland UK and Europe. Louis McGarry, Sales and Marketing Director, Centiel explains: “As an organisation, Sure requires the highest level of uptime and is also committed to reducing energy usage throughout its facilities. “CumulusPowerTM was selected to replace a number of legacy UPS, providing a more efficient solution now that Sure is on a zero-carbon path.” The upgrade to legacy equipment in data halls 4, 5 and 8 this year to CumulusPowerTM has seen the whole facility convert to the latest technology, which offers significantly higher resilience and availability (nine-nines 99.9999999% which equates to milliseconds per year) than previously, in addition to achieving significant energy savings, costs and reducing carbon footprint. Due to the true modular nature of CumulusPower it is highly efficient, meaning it runs at 97% efficiency compared with <80% for the previous UPS. Simon Roger, Facilities Manager, Sure commented: “We chose Centiel’s CumulusPower as the leading power protection technology on the market. “I am pleased to say that the UPS replacements in Data Centres 4 and 5 are now complete with no more switching events required and the change requests are both closed. “We have seen the predicted instant power savings equating to an estimated 20-30% approximately with the current IT load. The UPS are also uber reliable and take up less space and we have saved around seven racks on this installation which can be used for clients.” Due to the location of the Channel Islands, trained engineers usually need to fly to the Islands to complete necessary maintenance work. CumulusPower’s modules can be ‘hot/safe swapped’ in a running load therefore, Centiel has also trained Sure’s engineers in first level response. Sure’s team can now complete basic monitoring, diagnostics and maintenance of the UPS.
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
Simon Roger continues: “CumulusPower is unique in the market because it enables UPS modules to be swapped safely by our trained team without switching the UPS off. This safe-hot-swap functionality means even if we need to replace a module and send it for repair, we do not experience any downtime, ensuring maximum availability for our clients.” Centiel’s team worked seamlessly with Sure to enable these works, delivering within budget, ahead of schedule and with zero downtime. Louis McGarry confirms: “From our experience, the energy savings when replacing old for new could result in a system paying for itself in three to five years. This is good news for the environment and clients alike. “This reduced total cost of ownership is supplemented by having industry leading availability and ease of maintenance. It is no wonder that CumulusPowerTM has now been installed in data centres and comms rooms in over 100 countries across 5 continents,
protecting more than 100 MW of critical power loads in locations including: the UK, Singapore, Australia, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and now the Channel Islands. “We are proud to have helped Sure to meet their objective of reducing energy and their carbon footprint, on this important project.” CENTIEL is a Swiss-based technology company designing, manufacturing and delivering industry-leading power protection solutions for critical facilities. The Company’s range of classleading, energy efficient, UPS systems offers the highest availability and reliability developed by the innovators of the industry’s first transformerless UPS and the world’s first three-phase modular UPS. IPowerE SUMMARY
HOMEFLEX CODE OF CONDUCT TO REVOLUTIONISE TRUST IN ENERGY A new Code of Conduct has launched to protect households & businesses participating in the flexibility market, which sees them buying and selling electricity to help manage supply and demand on the grid. The HOMEflex Code of Conduct (Household or Microbusiness Energy flexibility), created by Flex Assure under the leadership of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and funded by the Network Innovation Allowance (NIA), aims to help build trust and encourage engagement in flexibility services. As the UK continues its transition to a cleaner, more modern energy system, essential changes must be made to make it smarter, more responsive, and flexible; the launch of the HOMEflex Code is a critical step in this transition. It defines common standards of practice for companies delivering energy flexibility services, encourages good practice and accountability and will ultimately lead to the potential creation of a Compliance Scheme and increased communication between flexibility aggregators and consumers. Research conducted by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) formed the basis of the Code - it found that domestic and microbusiness energy customers are calling for improved industry standards, as well as better adherence to those standards. This move marks a milestone in increasing the transparency, inclusivity, and respect that the sector thrives on HOMEflex will deliver this by setting common standards of practice for those delivering energy flexibility services, ensuring service providers act with accountability, and allowing the sector to realise the full potential of domestic demand side response. Natasha Mills, Scheme Administrator at Flex Assure, said: “‘We launched the HOMEflex Code of Conduct for Household or Microbusiness energy flexibility users. With the publication of this Code, we hope to increase consumer confidence in energy flexibility services, with the aim of encouraging participation. Government policy is clear at showing the importance that domestic flexibility will have in reaching Net Zero in a secure and cost-effective way.“ www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
DISAPPOINTMENT AS NORTHERN LEG OF HS2 IS SCRAPPED Stephen Marcos Jones, chief executive of ACE Group, said: “There is a great deal of disappointment amongst our members. “There remains much uncertainty about the Prime Minister’s ‘Network North’ announcement and the detail behind it. Construction needs certainty of pipeline to deliver the Government’s infrastructure projects and this situation has not helped. “I urge the Government to ensure the highly skilled jobs that would have been created are not forgotten when it comes to delivering ‘Network North’ – no matter what form this takes.” He reports: “The emphasis must now be on ensuring the projects the Prime Minster announced in his speech are delivered on time and on budget, minimising the impact on the organisations currently working on HS2.”
