With winter on the way it is time to tidy up your gardens and allotments. Always best to get any canes or other bean sticks cleaned off and put in the dry for the winter. Also prune back your fruit bushes now and cut down autumn fruiting raspberries. You can plant garlic, onions and shallots ready for next year.

At Lovejoys we are planning for a very different Christmas to the one we had last year, which most of us will remember as a bit of a disaster, certainly for the hospitality trade. This lasted pretty much until spring when restaurants and hotels started re-opening. Since the start of summer we have been extremely busy and have even had to call on a few of our lovely retired staff to come back to help out! This is all good news.

The main things to talk about in November are squashes and pumpkins. As well as being fantastic Halloween props, pumpkins (though

not the carving kind) and their squash cousins are delicious in warming soups and stews. They are also particularly good in curries.

November also sees the start of the root veg season; why not throw some squash and root veg together in the oven for a lovely autumnal traybake? Add in some thickly sliced leeks, season well and roast for about 45 minutes at 200°C fan until well browned and caramelising around the edges. Delicious!

Quince are around for a short while with English apples and pears and even a few of the last crop of

raspberries and strawberries, these of course are grown in polytunnels but with new handier varieties that can tolerate cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours.
