A memorable industry experience awaits
We’re thrilled that you were able to make time to attend Wire Expo 2024. We believe that you’ve made a good choice on multiple levels to be part of WAI’s traveling event.
The return to Connecticut and the host site, the Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort, will present a full program that includes presentations by industry veterans that includes Keynote speaker Paul Furtado, chief operating officer of Prysmian North America, a company that made quite a splash recently when it announced that it was acquiring Encore Wire. The other Keynote speaker is H.O. Woltz III, chairman, president and CEO of Insteel, who has long been a strong supporter of the ferrous wire industry. The WAI will be honoring him with the presentation of the Champion’s Award.
We hope you came early, because the program starts off with an Association first: the annual Clockwinding tradition. It will be carried out at 9 am on Tuesday, when Dave Lane of Northampton Machinery, Co./MGS Group, becomes the first British Clockwinder to physically perform the ceremony outside WAI headquarters since it was presented to the Association in 1948.
There will be many other memorable speakers and presentations but do set aside time for the show floor as it will include representatives from some of the industry’s best-known OEMs as well as more than 20 first-time ever Wire Expo exhibitors. It is an ideal venue to discuss possibilities, while Tuesday’s Welcome Reception continues to be be the place to meet up with everyone.
Wire Expo has been well planned, and we are convinced that it all falls into place just right because much of it was designed by WAI’s industry volunteers. You should feel quite at home as this Made in the USA event because it produced by the industry for the industry.

Event Highlights
TUESDAY KEYNOTE ADDRESS
H.O. Woltz III, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Insteel Industries
The talk by Woltz, who goes by “H,” is “Success Based on Committing to Continuous Improvement and a Passion for Manufacturing.” He will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the ferrous wire industry. He will draw from his 45 years in the industry, including 30 years as CEO, guiding a company during both up and down business cycles. Of note, H is also the 2024 recipient of the WAI Champion’s Award. He is just the second recipient of this award, which recognizes an industry executive for his support of the wire and cable industry.
EXHIBITS
The industry thrives on technology, and more than a hundred slots have been taken by suppliers ready to discuss their latest solutions. If you have a project or want to consider alternatives, this is the place to flush out possibilities. Also, with 21 new exhibitors, attendees would be well served to look through the Product Directory and see whether there may be some new potential suppliers worth spending some time with.
CLOCKWINDING
This event was a mere 76 years in the making WAI’s annual Clockwinding Ceremony will be held Tuesday at 9 am on Tuesday, June 11, at Wire Expo 2024. This will be the first such event “appearance” for the clock since it was presented to the Association in 1948. It will be wound by U.K. Clockwinder Dave Lane—plant floor supervisor, Northampton Machinery Co. (NMC), part of the MGS Group. Lane exemplifies the tradition of U.K./U.S. cooperation and partnership. He has spent his career producing and commissioning NMC machinery, first in the U.K., as part of the production team, then in customer plants around the world as a commissioning technician/service tech. Since 2003 when The MGS Group took over NMC operations, he has continued to support products, primarily in the USA market.
MORDICA LECTURE
William T. Bigbee
The Mordica Lecture by William T. Bigbee will discuss the role that Encore Wire’s leadership and boldness has had in its amazing success story. The company’s single campus in McKinney, Texas, has grown to more than three million covered sq ft. Bigbee has been a key R&D force in driving that growth, with his name on dozens of patents.
It was a unique experience for U.K. Clockwinder Martin Thacker, who remotely wound the clock in 2020 and 2021, before doing it in person in 2022.

As ever, this is the perfect time and place to catch up with what’s going on in the wire and cable industry.
WAI Clockwinding tradition: 1st road trip since 1948
>>> Tuesday, June 11 | 9:00 am
A long-standing U.K./U.S. ceremony will be held during Opening Session on June 11
It may seem extreme to move an eight-ft-tall grandfather clock some 35 miles for a ceremony that may only last about five minutes. Yet the gesture harkens back to the spirit of the 32 U.K. wire companies that presented the clock to the Association in 1948 in appreciation of the support provided by the U.S. wire industry during World War II. Each year, a U.K. representative comes to the U.S. to commemorate the friendship and communication between the two nations. This year, the U.K. clockwinder is Dave Lane, plant floor supervisor, Northampton Machinery Co., part of the MGS Group.
What makes this clock special? Its clock’s massive mahogany case, made about the year 1770, stands out for reasons beyond its eight-ft-tall height. The brickwork ornamentation of the plinth and clusters of fluted columns to the head are noteworthy features, the latter being quite unusual.
The Corinthian capitals and other metal ornamentation are picked out with gold. The case was originally made for a three

The allure of the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino extends beyond the doors of the gaming/hotel mecca. The Sun Patio, the perfect backdrop for Wire Expo’s highly anticipated Opening Reception. Located off the Casino of the Earth, the doors leading outside to the Sun Patio are in the walkway between the Riverview and Indian Summer parking garages, to the right of Krispy Kreme. It was formerly known as the Summer Entrance.
Embracing the essence of summertime, the spacious outdoor event setting invites attendees to immerse themselves in a blend of industry networking and laid-back luxury. The venue boasts a 50-foot bar with six high-definition screens and six bartender stations, plus an open-air covered pavilion, making it the ultimate hub for both business and pleasure to end the day. As the evening unfolds, guests can gather around cozy fire pits scattered throughout the patio, fostering connections and sparking conversations against the backdrop of the warm summer night.
The Sun Patio serves as the home of Mohegan Sun’s popular summer concert series, Party on the Sun Patio, starting June 30th, and every Friday night through September 1st.
month or longer period clock. To open the door, the two pegs at each side are withdrawn and the door frame lifted down. There are no hinges. The movement and dial were remade to be “true,” able to run for 400 days without rewinding.
The clock was considered a luxury as it took much skill to make, especially for the aesthetic and practical value of an “anniversary clock.” Older examples often needed an 80-lb weight to drive them. The WAI’s clock embodies the general principles of the old craftsmen but it also has later advances, such as Geo. Graham’s dead-beat escapement and Skefko ball-bearings on the heavily loaded barrel arbor. Using a 40 lb weight, its efficiency is 13 times that of a common eight-day long case clock. The falling of the weight about .008 in. keeps the clock going one minute during which time the pendulum travels about 135 inches.
In an era where nothing in society can happen fast enough for most people, a step back to a tradition based on brotherhood and partnership seems like a well-placed step forward, one well worth five minutes.

Mordica Memorial Award goes to Bigbee
W.T. Bigbee, vice president of operations for Encore Wire, was named the 2024 Mordica Memorial Award recipient by the WAI Board of Directors. The award recognizes an individual’s contributions through research, development and innovation. The Award is named after John Mordica, who was the founding president of WAI.
Encore Wire was launched in 1989 and Bigbee joined the company in 1998. He was listed as an inventor on dozens of patents that he and his colleagues have been granted during his tenure at Encore Wire. He previously was a process engineer for General Cable for nine years. The importance of his achievements was seen in the comments from the industry veterans on the award nomination committee. One advocate cited the numerous advances that Bigbee contributed to for both processes and products, singling out the patent for the company’s Reel Payoff as the most impactful to Encore’s expansive customer base. A second advocate observed that while Bigbee was instrumental in Encore’s amazing growth story at its campus in McKinney, Texas, it also had a posi-
tive impact on the regional community.
To appreciate the scope of Bigbee’s research that led to his name being on dozens of patents, below is a list of some of those achievements: Apparatus and Method for Extruding Stripes onto an Extruded Product; Wire Pulling Head Apparatus with Crimp Zone Indicators and Method of Using Same; System, Composition and Method of Application of Same for Reducing the Coefficient of Friction and Required Pulling force During Installation of Wire or Cable; Apparatus and Method for a Free-Spinning Wire Dispensing Reel; System and Apparatus for Applying Labels to Cable or Conduit; and System, Apparatus, and Method for Effectively Applying Proper Sequential Alphanumeric to Extruded Wire and Cable.
Bigbee will present his Mordica Lecture at 11:30 am on Tuesday, June 11, and be recognized at the Awards presentations on Wednesday.

Sørige to be honored with Donnellan Memorial Award
Jan Sørige, president of Enkotec Co., Inc., the U.S. business of Denmark’s Enkotec A/S, is the winner of the 2024 Donnellan Memorial Award that is given to an individual for their contributions to the Association,
A WAI member since 1992, Sørige served from 2009 to 2014 as chairman of the Association’s Exhibition Planning Committee, which is responsible for planning the Interwire and Wire Expo events. He was also a member of the Board of Directors. He served as WAI president in 2020, a tumultuous period due to Covid. He was noteworthy for his exemplary efforts to enable the holding of Interwire in 2021, which proved to be impossible, as it was for the vast majority of such events in that time span.
Sørige was cited by board members for the intensity of those efforts as well as by WAI Executive Director Steve Fetteroll, who spent considerable time with him. “Jan was an incredible presence during what was a very stressful and challenging time. He was part of many meetings where he tried to make it happen. You can tell a lot about a person

Raúl García Martínez the recipient of the 2024 President’s Award
Raúl García Martínez, director of technology and development at Viakable, was named by WAI President Daniel Blais as the winner of the 2024 President’s Award. It was a superb choice on multiple levels.
Blais said that García, the 15th recipient of the award, has had a special impact on the industry. “I understand how demanding your position is with Viakable and not only have you found time to serve on the Board of Directors, but you truly championed the 2023 Monterrey Technical Conference. Without your leadership, influence and hard work, the event would not have been the amazing success that was rated by all involved.”
Blais, a Prysmian executive, said that Garcia’s volunteer participation was both impressively smooth and effective. “I know that operating on an international level is a quality that is often hard earned. You are a genuine industry influencer and you have made the Association better with that perspective and background.”
García, who joined Viakable in 2016 after working in different roles for Whirlpool for 23 years, started out as director of the Viakable Tech Center and was promoted to his current position in 2018. He holds a master’s degree in science technology commercialization from the University of Texas Austin/Cimav.
Beyond his efforts on behalf of the Monterrey ITC, García has been a staunch supporter of employee training, including sending dozens of employees to WAI’s Fundamental’s program. The President’s Award is quite an honor, but it is not his first WAI recognition. In his editorial in the December 2023 issue, WAI Executive Director Steve Fetteroll cited the role of ITC volunteers, and singled out García, whose photo ran in the middle of the editorial. “Not for the first time, he generously gave of his time to help out. He was nothing less than an industry superstar.”

Fundamentals of Wire & Cable Manufacturing
>>> Monday, June 10
This very popular one-day, pre-conference course provides attendees a solid grounding in the essentials of wire and cable manufacturing. It includes four general topics in the morning, and following lunch there are four sessions each in separate ferrous and nonferrous/electrical tracks. The program is valuable to industry newcomers as well as for seasoned professionals seeking a refresher. Following the last sessions, there will be a manufacturing problem-solving session, followed by a social hour. For presenter bios, go to the mobile app, click on “education” then “speakers.”

Mechanics of Wiredrawing
Matt Reinoehl, SDI LaFarga
COPPERWORKS
This course presents fundamental engineering principles and process calculations that are used to design, analyze, and improve metal rod and wiredrawing operations. Topics include a basic overview of wiredrawing mechanics with respect to material behavior and process parameters. Die angle and reduction will be addressed in light of the Deltaparameter and its practical application. Drawing limits, friction and lubrication, work-piece heating, and temperature effects are also discussed.
Drawing Dies
Tom Maxwell, Jr., Die Quip Corporation
This presentation focuses on the die, the most important part of the drawing process. Without it, the best drawing machines, lubricant, and treatment systems cannot reduce the wire diameter. However, with a die, vice pliers, and a hammer, wire can be drawn, albeit slowly, as it has been for over 2,000 years. The intention of this course is to provide an understanding of what makes a die work, how it is designed, causes of failure, and problems with drawing larger sizes.
Lubrication in the Wire Drawing Process
Bradley Andrews, Condat Corp. The wiredrawing process generates significant heat that affects the lubricants’ physical and chemical properties which in turn affects the lubricants’ ability to provide separation of the wire to the die. The amount of generated heat is influenced by complex interactions between metal composition, surface preparation, production equipment, and other factors. This presentation reviews basic lubrication principles, and typical lubricant compositions used in ferrous and nonferrous applications. Also included is a web link to WAI Hard Wire video’s reviewing ferrous and non-ferrous lubricant maintenance practices for maintaining good lubrication.
Wire Breaks and Surface Damage
HoracePops, Horace Pops Consulting, Inc.
This course classifies wire breaks from a perspective that compares material defects to process-related problems. Rod defects will include both casting and rolling issues such as internal voids, foreign contaminants, rolled-in scale, hot cracks, and surface porosity. The effects of wiredrawing speed and lubrication will be discussed with respect to generation of fines, shaving, galling, and other surface defects.

Investment banks, government agencies, business intelligence firms and national media outlets have entire teams dedicated to tracking the movements of copper. How do we make sense of this information and who are we to believe? Is there enough copper and manufacturing capacity available to support demand? How much of anticipated demand is predicated upon electrification and mass EV adoption? How do we meet demand in the most sustainable way possible? This presentation will address these questions and present a data-driven overview of current copper wire rod market conditions and provide an analysis of several future-state scenarios. Fact or fiction, you decide!

Now we are taking the next step, making our progress clearer through the Axjo Greenology Concept. Here we convey our vision of how we can help, educate and improve our customers’ sustainability work in both the short and long term. Four key areas – innovation, efficiency, sustainability and closed loop recycling – form the collective starting point for this work. We make the most of the knowledge we already have in each area and refine it to ensure an even smaller footprint. This can involve everything from techniques with weight reduc-
tion, mono material design and the use of 100% PCR (Post Consumer Recycling).

Why we’re looking forward to Wire Expo
Wire and cable is an industry, but it’s the people who are part of it that make it happen. Most of the time we are very busy, and there’s a lot of people we might want to meet but it’s hard to make that happen. That’s why we like to exhibit at Interwire and Wire Expo. We have a lot of good things to talk to attendees about, and we hope to make contact with people who could be future customers. It’s also fun to attend the reception, and even better, we don’t have to take a plane this year to get there. Finally, we appreciate the Association holding these events, and providing good programming, which is why we continue to be a sponsor. Peter and Tamar Kuipers, principals, Lloyd & Bouvier.

Izory HD’s wear resistance and pristine polished surface finish also make it an excellent material choice for guides, pulleys and eyelets. Stop by booth #603 so we can learn about

Stranding Wire & Cable with Large Cross Sections up to 500 mm²
The new machine types D 1252, D 1602 and D 2002 for the production of conductors and conductor ropes for energy cables with cross sections between 6 and 500 mm² like all machines of the D series contain all crucial features modern bunching and stranding machines have to offer. But we don’t just settle for that. In the D machines all machine data are transferred via telemetry. An automatic traverse unit enables perfect winding and paying-off from the spool. Sensors monitor the production process without interruption. Additionally, the wires can be compacted. And the list could be continued. The new larger machines of the D series can produce class 2 conductors (round standard and compacted) as well as sector-shaped conductors with 90° and 120° (Cu and Al). They are capable of producing class 5 & 6 flexible conductors as well as automotive/battery cables according to IEC 60228 and insulated conductors of diameters up to 25 mm, even in layer construction.
Benefit from all advantages the machines offer: a perfectly reproducible product quality, minimum materials usage and energy consumption as well as outstanding efficiency –for your fast return on investment.
