This section asks OEMs to explain why what they have to offer for customers is “the best of.” That claim could be for technology that offers the lowest operating cost or the newest advanced technology, but part of the equation has to be what else a company has to offer customers. What makes it a good potential partner. Also, some companies present more technical details in entries in the Products section.
Established as a small German company in 1982 and active for the first few years exclusively in the then-flourishing magnet wire industry, Boockmann Engineering has 40 years of experience in combining the utmost precision and environmental protection standards to provide customer-specific solutions for the highest quality requirements. It is best known for its Helicord technology. In the early years, it was our focus on outside-the-box problem-solving (instead of just selling) and our unconditional ambition to see things through, working with customers until their requirements were fulfilled and their production lines ran reliably, that not only allowed the company to grow at a steady pace, but also gave us a reputation as one of the best suppliers to partner with in magnet wire surface treatment. Since then we have gathered invaluable knowledge in many fields and widened our scope of products and services to cater to a much larger part of the wire and cable industry with the same ambition and reliability. We still focus on delivering solutions rather than products, providing premium after-sales service and access to our wide knowledge base, and still aim at 100% performance while keeping our “ecological footprint” as small as possible. It is not only our firm belief that productivity, quality, sustainability and profitability are not incompatible with each other. Actually, we are convinced that in the long run, you can’t have either one without the others. This approach in combination with our high degree of in-house production depth allowing for an equally high degree of control over quality, and good ol’ German engineering are what makes us your best choice in wire and cable surface treatment.

Italy’s TOSCA Srl, founded in 1967, and Germany’s EJP Maschinen GmbH, founded in 1981, started cooperating in 1982 to build wire shot-blasting machines, and in 1994 EJP-TOSCA Strahlanlagen GmbH was formed for the global sales and services of all shotblasting machines manufactured by TOSCA Srl. Today, it is represented in North America by Wire Machine Systems. Per owner and CEO Jacques Paraskevas, wire drawing, the company provides systems for descaling, mechanical pickling of bars and wire rods or bundles (off line), or of wire, extrusions and bars (in line). The shot blasting eliminates oxides and welding scale to obtain bare and completely clean metal, ready to be extruded. Coiled wire productions are carried in intermittent loads through a revolving door that rotates around its longitudinal axis, equipped with two arms for coils. The company’s “TS-CV” type shot-blasting machine (pictured) for in-line mechanical pickling of wire. The surface cleaning of the wire (removal of calamine and oxide) takes place by centrifugal projection of metal abrasive carried out by one or more series of turbines positioned around it. The wire, to be treated in one pass, receives the quantity of abrasive necessary for pickling, while two prechambers/vestibules before and after shot blasting prevent the accidental abrasive exit. The metal abrasive, after the impact on the surface of the wire, is recovered together with the powder (oxide and crushed calamine) in the abrasive circulation system that also provides for the reconditioning through a counter-current washing machine. See p. 77 for more details. For more details, contact Jay Griffith. president, Wire Machine Systems, tel. 260-483-9269, jay.griffith@wire-machine.com.
Advanced Swedish descaling equipment for perfectly prepared wire. Lämneå Bruk AB’s state-of-the-art descaling system consists of a four- or six-sheave scale breaker, a four-pair brushing unit, a sandpaper descaling machine, a waterjet and the Candocoat cleaning and coating machine. This technology facilitates efficient, space-saving in-line rod cleaning for perfectly prepared wire for the next production steps. The new descaling sandpaper machine (pictured), comes with one or two 300 mm-wide sanding belts. It has rod wire guide rollers and an integrated line speed feedback to avoid over-sanding if the line stops. Advanced features include belt-tracking control, synchronized line speed and individual drives for each flyer and sand belt for full rpm flexibility. It is meant for low to high carbon and stainless-steel wire. The company’s reversed bending descaler for low-high carbon rods comes in two sizes for wire from 5.5 mm to 12 mm. Its economical design has bending rollers with solid carbide steel at the center, eliminating the need to change the entire roll. The mechanical brushing system has an intelligent brush pressure detection system for excellent cleaning results and extended brush lifetime, making it a cost-saving and enduring machine. The high-pressure waterjet is a high-quality and compact descaling system that only uses water—no chemicals— in the cleaning process. No wearing occurs while cleaning the rod, so the result is consistent and superior wire quality. The machine removes residing scales effectively from carbon steel and stainless-steel wires in a three-step process: first, loose particles are removed from the surface with hot water, the lubricant carrier applies wet coating and the rod is dried. Italy’s OM Frigerio Srl—represented in North America by HOWAR Equipment Inc.—supplies orbital and rotating brushing systems for the wire drawing and processing industry. In recent years, more applications have needed improved wire surface finishes with a more ecological solution. Below are two specific successful machine installations. Also, see p. 76 for another example. Copper wire cleaning/degreasing. The wire brushing system was originally developed for descaling and cleaning steel wires. A company manufacturing magnet wire wanted to remove a wax coating off their 10-mm copper rod that was to be roll formed. It needed a system that could contain the air-borne copper dust created during the brushing process. OM Frigerio’s new model, with a sealed safety enclosure coupled with a vacuum dust extraction system, did just that. Trials ran well, and the customer bought it. It later was upgraded with the latest generation dust extraction and filtering system with a carbon cartridge filter that provide even better dust-capturing performance. Steel wire pre zinc coating. A customer coating steel wire with zinc wanted a better substrate surface. An OM Frigerio double-head brushing system was chosen to clean the wire prior to zinc coating. The cleaning brushes removed any residual debris and lubricants, and also left a textured surface able to accept more zinc on the wire. The final result was a clean bright wire. The wire brushing system allows for higher processing speeds up to 5 m/sec (1,000 ft/min). It can process wire up to 15 mm, and is a great alternative to shot-blasting as it is much more economical as the brushes are the only wear part.
Germany’s Staku Anlagenbau GmbH—represented in North America by Wire Machine Systems—has been an industry leader since 1998 at providing technology for wire surface preparation for cold forming. Staku offers different types of cleaning technology. One is a continuous cleaning device for wire and strip with ultrasound called Ultraclean, which is used for chrome/nickel alloys and nonferrous metals. It provides crucial cleaning that is gentle to the product and desirable. For this purpose, especially, it is advisable to carry out surface cleaning using ultrasound, since this process does not attack the basic material. This procedure allows you in particular to remove stearates and rolling and drawing oils from the surface with mis of about 1 second. Before carrying out heat treatment, it is possible to achieve extremely high levels of cleanliness at a relatively low speed in a tight space using ultrasonic degreasing systems. Small scale pressure and such on waves are introduced into a liquid. This is done via vibrating elements that are attached to one of the sidewalls of a chamber or to its base. When the vibrating elements are actuated electrically, they expand and retract. In the pressure phase, the liquid is displaced. At contraction, the liquid tries to follow but does not manage to do so due to inertia, which means that a cavitation bubble forms. At reversal to the pressure phase, the bubble collapses suddenly and drags everything close to it towards its center point, away from the workpiece. Millions of cavitation bubbles work in this way until everything that is adhering on the material to be cleaned has been removed. For more details, see p. 76. Formed in 1968 by Stan Stalson, Wire Lab Company’s purpose was the technical development of the steel wire rod mechanical descaling process and therefore mechanical descaling machinery. His efforts made steady progress and by the late 1970s, WILCO mechanical descaling machinery was recognized as a commercially viable alternative to acid picking for steel rod preparation. Mechanical descaling gained acceptance as a way to significantly reduce rod processing costs as well as to reduce and eliminate environmental problems associated with chemical cleaning. Our exclusive focus on mechanical descaling technology has allowed us to continually improve the process while simultaneously increasing our product line offered to steel wire manufacturers. Today, customers may select from six standard models of WILCO descaling systems with additional configurations available for more specialized applications. Changing market conditions and the need for wire producers to focus on higher value-added (non-commodity) wire products led Wire Lab to develop our widely used Model 1250 wire brush descaling system (pictured) with automatic regulation of wire brush pressure. This aggressive descaling system produces an especially clean descaled rod product that can be made into much higher quality wire products versus simpler descaling technology. Its proven ability to consistently produce exceptionally clean descaled rod at today’s operating speeds, and to process up to 300 tons of descaled rod per set of commercially available wire brushes makes WILCO aggressive descaling machinery the choice now and into the future.

WIRE EXPO 2022 WRAP-UP
Wire Expo 2022 wrap-up Any questions one might have heading into the WAI Operations Summit and Wire Expo 2022 were quickly resolved: attendees were thrilled to once again meet with their peers at the Dallas Hyatt Regency in Dallas, Texas. There was a positive buzz on the show floor, a sense that nobody was in a rush to leave. It was a time to reconnect ... and that is exactly what happened. It began Tuesday morning with the welcome from WAI President Jim York who had honed in on what everyone was thinking. “Good morning and welcome to the 2022 Operations Summit and Wire Expo. It is great to be in Dallas and even better to be together,” he declared to an audience that definitely agreed. “With the bang of this gavel, I declare the 92nd annual meeting to order.” “We have been through the most challenging of times and that is certainly not an exaggeration,” York said. “Like some of you, I have spent decades in the business and never could have imagined the business conditions that have defined the past two years. The world also gained an appreciation for manufacturing.” York said that the Board had assembled the program to address the three priorities: workforce, supply chain and operational challenges. “Spread your time between the exhibits and the sessions. You won’t be disappointed.” He noted that given the cancellations of Wire Expo 2020 and Interwire 2021, it was time to re-unite at Wire Expo 2022, from the show floor to the welcome reception. The opening session saw presentations of Association awards, and not just for the 2022 winners but also for

WIRE EXPO 2022 WRAP-UP
Italy’s SAMP Group: sharing its revitalized story at Dallas At Wire Expo 2022, SAMP Group CEO Teodoro Ceglia was at the company’s booth, where he and staff talked to attendees. With new owners that have provided a firm financial base, he notes that SAMP is the dependable partner that manufacturers can turn to to meet the opportunities driven by strong growth areas in wire and cable. Below, he discusses where SAMP is today. Italy’s SAMP Group was pleased to be part of Wire Expo 2022, held June 7-8 in Dallas. The event was well organized, and attendance was remarkable given the backdrop. It is a clear sign that the wire and cable market is back and growing. Companies and industry professionals are rapidly returning to a “new normal,” as has been seen at live events such as Wire Expo. This was the first opportunity for us to showcase the new SAMP Group. We had great conversations about the re-birth of our industry legacy that was made possible last year by our joining HVD Partners. With the resulting firm financial base it provided, we were able to both relaunch our prestigious brand and continue to serve customers across the globe. I am pleased to note that we completed our fiscal year with healthy profits. SAMP Group’s strategy is clear and simple. We will continue to provide state-of-the-art wire and cable machinery, while ensuring great customer service and environmental sustainability. To deliver on this promise, we have been building our international team of qualified industry experts in key areas that include technology and after-sales service. We are working hard to understand customers’ current and future needs to anticipate tomorrow’s value-added solutions. Besides performance and reliability, wire and cable manufacturers are increasingly interested in life-cycle management, total-cost-of-ownership and sustainability. We recognize this, and accordingly we offer solutions that will support our customers over the lifetime of the machine, including consultation and the retrofit/rebuild of existing machines when this is the best choice. SAMP Group’s restart has gone remarkably well. Thankfully, we are in a growing market. The energy transition, e-mobility and sustainability are all mega-trends that have helped us. Customers also clearly appreciate our new Group setup and value proposition.

SAMP Group CEO Teodoro Ceglia, r, with SAMP USA North America Sales Manager Brett Hamner and Project Manager David Graff at their booth at Wire Expo. Goals and pledges such as ours are important, but those are words, and we all know that results depend on having the right people in place to make them happen. We have made key hires to make our goals a reality. Those include Brett Hamner as North America sales manager. He has 30 years of experience in the cable industry in the engineering and sales position. Alain Blatti is our service manager. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the industry, having served in several service and technical positions both for OEMs as well as wire manufacturers. Alessandro Iannitto is our operations director. He is well versed in lean operations, having significant experience in automotive and the oil and gas industry, and can help take us to the next level in our machine manufacturing and project execution. At the same time, we have maintained some of our key people that have been crucial over the years to the company. One such person is Dominique Perroud, who currently is general manager of SAMP China, and is transitioning to senior sales director for Asia. We at SAMP know him well for his leadership skills, but so does the Wire Association International, as he served as your president in 2011 while heading our operations in China. He served very well on both those missions. I am proud to say that the SAMP team is focused on doing what it does best: designing and constructing the best machines in the world, and providing great service to satisfy the needs of our customers around the globe.* We look forward to meeting with many more industry colleagues and discussing our exciting new solutions to increase productivity and reduce TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Our story, appropriately, remains an ongoing one, with many goals and objectives, and we will present that same message at wire Düsseldorf on June 20-24.

(continued from p. 53) Finally, Wednesday also saw a tour of Encore Wire, which has continued to expand its mammoth campus in McKinney, Texas. The company had opened it site once again for attendees, and attendees were duly impressed. Prior to the official event on June 7-8, WAI held its Fundamentals of Wire Manufacturing course, which has continued to fare well, both in person and online. “Although I have been at Ulbrich Shaped Wire for almost five years now, I have always been more on the equipment side of things,” said Dan Rutkowski, process development engineer II. “I wanted to make sure I had a good understanding of all the fundamentals and it was a good tool to understand the principles Rutkowski of wire drawing that I had not known before. The course was very informative and the speakers did a great job to keep it stimulating. I was happy to leave with more knowledge and contacts than I arrived with. The digital copy of all the information was very helpful to allow us to go back and reference the course. I would recommend to anyone new or experienced in the wire manufacturing industry.”

“The WAI conference was good for me to meet other people in the wire and cable industry and to learn about industry leading tech,” said Garrett Wotring, process improvement engineer, Service Wire Co. “The Fundamentals course was informative across the board. Prior to attending, I could Wotring differentiate machines in our plant; but knowing their pros and limitations helped put things into perspective. The breakout sessions were relevant and worthwhile. Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to attend. An industry event brings people together, something that has not been simple for a long time. Covid may have forced itself into the industry, but it is no longer forcing people in it to remain passive. One accepts that there are risks in everyday life, and that this is one more to deal with.” A better sense of the Wire Expo experience can be seen from the collective photos in this wrapup, especially those from the show floor and the welcome reception, where the sense of spirit and positive mindset can be clearly seen. The report from SAMP (see p. 54) was also fitting as in it the company shared its resiliency under new owners. There were many stories at Dallas, only you had to be there to appreciate it.

Show exhibitor and attendee comments Well it was great to see people again, and I mean “real” people, not people projected from a computer screen. To be able to mingle amongst the crowd, talk and even shake hands (or fist pump in some cases) was a real treat Gregory Scher once again. The Wire Expo show provided this opportunity and what a wonderful feeling once again after the Pandemic shutdown we have all experienced over the last couple of years. In terms of the event from a general perspective, the location was great and I was pleased to see that it was very well attended. The visitors I talked with were all very busy and have strong backlogs. Most were generally positive about the path moving forward but also cautiously optimistic in light of the current economic challenges and conflicts worldwide. Gregory K. Scher, president, Weber & Scher Mfg. Co., Inc. It was interesting for our CEO, Eric Xirinachs, who came from Spain to the USA for the first time for a wire and cable show. We were both extremely pleased with the turnout, and some of the booth visits had viable new business opportunities. The venue was great and the attendance felt high. The location allowed many wire and cable plants to send principal engineers and material sourcing

You will see us in Atlanta in May 2023. Lori Parent, director of sales, U.S./Canada, Delta Tecnic. We were unsure of expectations for the show as it related to attendance and interest. Well, we were pleasantly surprised by both. The questions and concerns from attendees were focused on efficiencies in operations, yields, and uptime. Hoping that the attendees got the information they were looking for. I am excited about Atlanta where there will be an even larger crowd. Eugene E. Klein, president, Parkway-Kew Corporation (PKC). It was my first time participating at Wire Expo. I was very impressed with how well everything was organized. The program sessions were interesting and thoughtful. I had a chance to meet more customers and suppliers than I expected, and the event overall was perfect for networking. I can’t Yulia Leskovets compliment enough the tour of the Encore Wire campus. They have impressive operations! Finally, the Welcome Reception was outstanding, and food was delicious. I would like to thank WAI for all the effort in organizing and making this event happen. It was definitely a great experience for me, and I look forward to more in-person events like this! Yulia Leskovets, director of sales and marketing, International Wire Group. Wire Expo was much better than our expectations. We are very happy that we came all the way from India. The arrangements were very good, especially the boards that

After a long time between shows, it was great to go and exhibit at Wire Expo 2022 in Dallas. Despite some unexpected bumps and postponements, it was good to exhibit and see old and new customers again. The show had a very good turnout and the quality of leads was outstanding. Looking forward to Atlanta in 2023. Richard Medoff, general manager, Ace Metal Inc.

It was great to see so many established and new industry professionals at Wire Expo this year. After a long hiatus, everyone was excited to get back to face to face network-
Annaliese Sviokla with colleagues ing and problem solving. Between the show management and the attendees, it was truly a great week in Texas. I am already looking forward to the next one! Annaliese Sviokla, GEM Gravure. In the fall of 2021 we decided to get a booth at Wire Expo and see what kind of interest there was in our redesigned and innovate cooling process for wire and cable production. We went with an open mind and did not get our hopes up too high. We were absolutely not expecting the overwhelming response we got. We were humbled and amazed at the interest that was expressed. James Slabaugh, vice president, Slabaugh Metal Fab.
