This section asks industry suppliers to explain why what they have to offer for customers is “The best of.” That claim could be for a product that represents the best price or the best quality, but part of the equation has to be what else a company has to offer customers. What makes them a good potential partner. Here, suppliers of reels and spools discuss why they are an ideal choice for customers, as well as some comments on market conditions, which sad to say, have been anything but “the best of.”

Italy’s A. Appiani Srl (Appiani), represented in North America by Canada’s AITMAC Inc., is a global supplier of industrial steel reels with customers in every continent. It manufactures to international standards including DIN specifications and imperial standards. Appiani was founded in 1962 by Andreas Appiani, who previously was part of Mol-Bre in Italy, the first company in the country to manufacture industrial pressed steel reels. He further developed steel reels in the industry, and remodeled and improved the activity by developing new reel types. Today, Appiani’s plant in Manerbio, Brescia, covers some 8,000 sq m of manufacturing space, and carries ISO certification. Appiani has expanded and continues to upgrade to continue its standing as a leading supplier in this field. It has invested in modern CNC machinery and semi/fully automated welding equipment that ensures higher quality standards and containing costs. The result is that Appiani can provide the industry with: pressed steel reels for tire cord, hose wire and saw wire, B-type spools; steel pressed reels for process, shipping and drawing; plastic and steel composite reels; fabricated or structural steel reels and steel reels with finned flanges for cable; collapsible reels, with mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic release; fully and partially machined steel reels; and accessories such as pallets and baskets. 2021 brings Ace Metal Inc. to our 75th anniversary. We appreciate the support from all of our customers to allow us to succeed for this length of time, and look forward to another 75 years. Looking back, Ace Metal has worked hard to build an excellent manufacturing reputation, and that legacy of being a dependable supplier has carried over and continues to drive our operations. It’s why customers trust us to be their partner in a commodity field. Founded in 1946 by my father, Walter Medoff, Ace Metal continues as a family-owned and operated company. I started there in 1974, and spent seven years in the factory. I learned all the production phases, which was an informative experience, as my earning a business degree at Bryant University. I then was brought into the office to learn sales, purchasing and other duties. My father taught me the rest of the business: how to treat customers right. I say this because who I am and what I do for Ace Metal customers stems from that background. Today, Ace Metal manufactures high-quality, fine wire metal spools that are used in the ferrous, nonferrous, tire cord, fiber optic and aerospace industries as well as for many other applications. Our spools range in size from 6-in. to 14-in. flange diameters. They are designed with uniform quality and precision, and are also used in the batch annealing process. They are made from prime cold-rolled steel and are available in multiple colored finishes. Our tubular wire carriers, which come in square-base, star-base, clover-leaf base and circular-base designs, are used to ship large diameter wire and rod as well as internal wire carriers and payoffs. Wire manufacturers are welcome to contact Ace Metal to find out how we can help your company continue its legacy.

This section asks industry suppliers to explain why what they have to offer for customers is “the best of.” That claim could be for a product that represents the best price or the best quality, but part of the equation has to be what else a company has to offer customers. What makes them a good potential partner. Here, the focus is on cleaning equipment, for lines and for parts.

Candor Sweden AB, represented in the U.S. by Kinrei of America LLC, is a leading supplier of chemical processes and equipment for surface treatment technology. It provides plants for the continuous plating of wire and strip, conventional electroplating and water purification. The company offers a highly effective and environmentally conscious technique for high pressure cleaning of wire with hot water in line with a drawing machine or rolling mill. The company’s Candojet HW model—normally placed in line with other production equipment, such as a drawing machine or spooler, or prior to plating—is a compact, highly efficient hot water (90°C) cleaning unit for single wire applications at high speeds. It removes lubricants from the wire surface without using any aggressive chemicals. It works very well with different wire diameter and wire materials. The plant is completely built of stainless steel, and the tanks are well insulated to save energy. There are two versions: CJ HW2 is equipped with one pump feeding two Candojet-cells, while CJ HW 211 is divided into three sections: precleaning with one pump feeding two cleaning cells and two rinsing sections each with one pump feeding one cleaning cell. In each storage tank, electrical immersion heaters, a thermostat and a level guard are installed. After each treatment step, the wire is wiped off with compressed air. After treatment the liquid flows back to the tank. Fresh water is fed to the last tank and the water is used in counter flow, to save water and energy. The lubricant residue from the wire creates a foam or sludge that can easily be removed from the tank. North American companies interested in Candor Sweden can contact Dirghayu Joshi, Kinrei of America, tel. 973-677-9500, djoshi@kinreiusa.com, www.kinreiusa.com.

This year celebrating its founding in the U.S. a century ago, Magnus Engineered Equipment (MEE) is a world leader in the design and manufacture of industrial parts cleaning equipment using specialized immersion cleaning technology. We are experts at developing robust cleaning processes with consideration for material handling, automation, worker safety, environmental issues, and operating costs. Our Powersonic ™ radial tranducers—which operate at 20 kHz, and deliver the most concentrated ultrasonic cleaning power—are used by many wire manufacturers. Typical applications include: removing drawing compounds prior to plating or coating operations; cleaning wire at speeds to 1500 fpm and faster; cleaning copper and aluminum strip prior to forming and welding; cleaning wire and rod during forming operations; removing lubricants from alloy wire; removing lubricants and dirt prior to annealing; cleaning formed copper rod and wire prior to coating; and mixing liquids, both aqueous and non-aqueous. If one of our standard systems won’t completely fit your needs, we work with you to engineer a custom design that will be the very best option to maximize your cleaning efficiency. Custom services are a major part of our engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Our ability to adapt to your specific cleaning needs is unparalleled. Magnus can address special process applications that go beyond conventional cleaning and deliver exceptional results. Assistance in evaluating your specific situation is available through one of our wire specialists. Our systems are designed, manufactured and tested at our company headquarters in Willoughby, Ohio. The same experts who helped design your system are the people who service your system after the sale.

Metal Link, Inc., began manufacturing various wire and cable machines in South Korea since 1976. In 2002, we developed our very first electrolysis cleaning system in an effort to develop an environmentally safe system that could replace the acid using traditional pickling line. Our electrolysis cleaning system cleans the wire in two processes: the first is by means of mechanical descaling and the second is through the electrolysis cleaning. Since its inception, we have continued to improve the system so that it cleans not only low-carbon steel wire/rod, but also high-carbon steel wire/rod. The electrolysis system, in conjunction with the specialized belt grinding descaling process, effectively removes any oxides and smut from the surface of the wire. The oxidized Fe electron released from the positive anode electrically shaves a very thin surface in terms of micrometers. However, the smallest hydrogen atom produced during the gaseous forming process of hydrogen ion released from the negative cathode electro-mechanically removes any fine dust or lubricant residues hiding in the micro pinholes on the wire surface. The result is absolutely phenomenal. This cleaning system, which uses edible salt as the electrolyte, is environmentally very safe and is designed to be added in line with other machines, so users can maximize its cleaning efficiency in their applications and remove any safety concern that may arise from the acid using a traditional pickling line. In addition to the electrolysis cleaning machine, Metal Link also supplies various types of stranders (mini-tubular, tubular, rigid and planetary), drawing machines dry/wet, rod breakdown machine, bunchers, CCV lines and Conform lines.
