Event Updates for Wire Expo 2022 With WAI’s Operations Summit & Wire Expo 2022 just a month away, this section serves both as an update and as a reminder of just what will await attendees in Texas at the Dallas Hyatt Regency. The event includes the trade show, thoughtful speakers, management presentations that support the “rising to the challenges” theme and a return to sorely missed interaction, but it’s more than that. It’s a starting point to once again be an active participant, to rediscover why this is an industry where in-person meetings really matter. The Wire Expo preview in the April issue remains largely accurate, but as with any event there are some minor changes. For the show floor, there is information for some recently added exhibitors—Domeks, Booth 514; Extrusion Control & Supply, Inc., Booth 316; Kabmak Muhendislik Ve Makina San. Tic. Ltd. STI, Booth 315; Micro Weld/ Micro Products Company, Booth 317; PSC LLC, Booth 130; and SuperSeal in Booth 213. First-time exhibitor Slabaugh is now in Booths 124-125; Eurowire is now in Booth 314; and WAI is now in Booth 122. Also, some listings have either changed or had updates. Another update is that there is a new speaker. Steve Burgess, HR vice president for Insteel Industries, has

replaced Joe Barrett on the panel discussion; three more Platinum Sponsor statements; and a re-introduction of key program elements in a reader-friendly style. Two other topics. If you haven’t finalized your plans for lodging, the WAI has a limited block of rooms at the host hotel, that is good from one day before to one day after the event. That’s especially practical as the Welcome Reception will be held at the Monduel Atrium, which is located inside the host hotel. The rate for a room (two queen size beds) is $239, $259 with an atrium view. All reservations require a first night room deposit or guarantee with a major credit card. However, time is short as reservations must be received on or before May 17. Go to www.wireexpo22.com, and click on “reserve hotel.” Enter the group code G-WIRE. A reservation can also be made at tel. 214-651-1234, using the same group code. Finally, the WAI will stage the first-ever Wild West Drawing on Tuesday and Wednesday at the WAI booth. This high-caliber giveaway comes courtesy of Platinum Sponsor Dave Fisher, James Monroe Wire & Cable. See p. 51.

WHY ATTE ND WIRE E XPO? REASON # 2 OF 13

The stage is set: the show floor will be well-stocked with technology a nd services, while the Operations Summit offer s sound, timely prese ntations fro m industry veterans tha t support th e event theme, “Rising to th e Challenges.” It’s time for an industry reset.

Schedule subject to change. Go to the event website— www.wireexpo22.com—for the latest details.

2022 PREVIEW

WIRE DÜSSELDORF 2022

WIRE DÜSSELDORF PREVIEW Indeed, it has been a long time, but come the week of June 20th, the Fairgrounds at Messe Düsseldorf will once again host the world’s largest such meeting for the wire and cable industry. As of press time, nearly a thousand exhibitors had reserved space to share their latest technology and concepts. The focus, as always, will be on ways to advance manufacturing, and in any backdrop, that is a worthwhile pursuit.

The long wait is nearly over: wire Düsseldorf will be held June 20-24 in Halls 9 to 15, while Tube exhibitors will be in Halls 1 to 7a. A guest event, METAV, International Trade Fair for metal-working technologies— organized by VDW, German Machine Tool Builders’ Association—will be held in Halls 16-17. The industry desire for the event’s return is reflected in attendee survey statistics from the organizers, Messe Düsseldorf. It notes that, “Those who make decisions” will be at wire 2022. They say that approximately 75% of attendees are either upper or middle management. Of those who responded, 97%

56

recommend being present at the event, and more than two-thirds of all trade visitors report that they found new business partners. A new feature in 2022 will be a wire and Tube Expert Meeting on June 20 from 2:00 to 5:30 pm in Hall 1 (room 15). With a green focus, it will include lectures and company reports about machinery, systems and the latest production methods. It is organized by the Stahl-Kommunikation agency, and early registration (advised) can be made by e-mail at hgd@stahl-kommunikation.de. A second program of note is ecoMetals Trails. These are daily guided tours to sustainability experts in both the wire and

Amba will introduce its new, all-inone machine for the production of 10-mm-diameter full-thread screws in lengths of up to 420 mm. It is the first machine in the world able to produce screws of this length and diameter from the coiled wire to the finished product in a continuous cycle. With a throughput of up to 80 screws per minute, it sets a new industry benchmark. It works according to the Amba-developed all-in-one principle, i.e. all process steps— from paying off, cutting to length and straightening of the wire to head forming and thread rolling— are performed on just one machine. And this at a rate of 80 pieces per minute. The first 420-mm screw making machine will be delivered shortly to a customer in Germany. Further orders for this new type of machine have already been booked. amba.de.

WIRE DÜSSELDORF 2022

New industry association to be at wire 2022 When the industry gathers again at the Messe’s Fairgrounds on June 20-24, the ranks of exhibitors will include a newly founded entity: SCC, the Swiss Competence Cluster (SCC), an association founded to further Swiss manufacturers. Below are excerpts from a press release and WJI questions posed to AESA V.P. Jean-Luc Allemann, the president of SCC, about the goals and expectations. WJI: Tell us about the Swiss Competence Center (SCC). Allemann: As of April 22, SCC was still in the stages of registration, but the association will be fully established, active and ready to discuss its capabilities with attendees at wire Düsseldorf. The association gathers different Swiss companies, all of which have their own wire and cable specificities but share the same values. They have obvious cultural, commercial and technical synergies. WJI: What is the basis for this new body? Allemann: We live in a small country, but one that has a lot of technological knowledge and a great capacity for disruptive innovations. It is therefore not surprising that many of the high performance and quality products that other foreign companies are inspired by are developed here. Unfortunately, when it comes to price, some customers give up before considering the multiple benefits of our solutions. The use of a Swiss product is a major asset that allows users to reduce waste, optimize production costs and strengthen their corporate image. The price-performance ratio we offer is impressive, and the operational gains are such that the investment in our Swiss quality products is quickly amortized and therefore generates profits. WJI: Can you give us a more concrete example? Allemann: Today, the price of raw materials is skyrocketing, especially those of copper and aluminum. With a controlled production process and an accurate measurement of the electrical cross-section directly on the rope machine, the safety margin can be reduced. A consumption of raw material is therefore both a significant financial saving and a contribution to a sustainable future. WJI: Why now? Allemann: The world is changing. Some things are no longer obvious and we have to change our habits. Our future depends on our ability to innovate, but not only in terms of products. SCC will allow us to pool our skills and develop new ways to communicate and satisfy our customers. We are convinced that together we can develop synergies and better address these two main challenges.

60

W I R E J O U R N A L I N T E R N AT I O N A L M AY 2 0 2 2

WJI: What companies are part of it now? Allemann: SCC now includes seven companies: AESA Cortaillod, Erocarb SA, Hivotec AG, Microdia SA, Raytech AG, Sensoptic SA and Zumbach Electronic AG. The steering committee includes myself as president; Rainer Zumbach of Zumbach as vice president and Patrick Zacchia of Microdia as secretary.

SCC President Jean-Luc Allemann

WJI: Do you see SCC as being akin to Italy’s ACIMAF? Allemann: I have already met Bellina Ferruccio, the president of the Italian association (ACIMAF), and we have similar objectives. I expect to also meet the presidents of VDKM (Germany), VODKM (Austria) and IWCEA (France) during wire Düsseldorf to discuss objectives and potential synergies. You can also add Don Neville (IWMA) to that list. To clarify our objectives, we would like to do the following: organize Swiss pavilions at selected exhibitions; organize webinars on topical industry-specific issues; organize national live seminars in emerging countries; think about modernizing our means of communication; and collaborate with similar associations. WJI: What advantages will SCC offer members? Allemann: In addition to the business development aspects already mentioned, one main advantage will be the increased knowledge shared between each member. We will organize internal meetings on specific topics. When a cable manufacturer presents his concerns to a raw material supplier, or a metrologist discusses with a machine manufacturer, this allows technology and knowledge to evolve. This is even more true in an association, when the commercial interest (supplier-customer projects) is not the priority. WJI: Where can attendees find out more about SCC? Allemann: A Swiss pavilion is envisioned for future exhibitions, but at Düsseldorf you can visit the booths of individual SCC members: AESA, 10 A-38; Erocarb, 10 C-60; Hivotec, 11-C05; Microdia, 11 D-25; and Zumbach, 11 D-41. I can be contacted at jlallemann@aesa-cortaillod, and attendees will soon be able to visit us online at www.scc.swiss. The association intends to grow. Swiss companies wishing to join us can contact me there or at jlallemann@aesa-cortaillod.com.

Even though borax has traditionally been used in wire drawing soaps, this substance has been controversial for over 15 years for the potential Reprotoxic danger it represents. A new step is reached, as the European regulation on BORAX classification, labeling and packaging will change on Dec. 17, 2022. Products containing ≥ 0.3% borax and/or boric acid will be classified as Reprotoxic Category 1B. In many countries of the EU consequences will be huge. If the REACH procedure is confirmed, all users of products containing borax or boric acid will be obliged to substitute these products, or there will be very restrictive use measures that will involve factory investments to control the risks, or disposal cost is likely to increase. Beside this regulation, we can question the fact of continuing to use potentially dangerous products. Condat considers it has an important role to play and makes it a priority to monitor the substances used. Condat has always proposed a complete range of borax free wire drawing

FLYMCA is a world renown engineering and manufacturing company of rotating equipment for the cable industry. Through the past and present year, it continues to focus on large stranding, cabling and armoring machinery. Many of the developments in the recent years have been incorporated into machinery like tubular stranders and bow cablers. These improvements have reduced stopping and change-over time as well as reducing operator intervention to improve safety. These improvements include accumulators to allow for continuous operation, automatic loading and unloading systems to load and unload multiple reels simultaneously, and automatic cutting and taping of cable ends with automatic change-over from one take-up to another. Recent months have seen high demand for large stranding and armoring machinery to produce submarine cables. Armoring is being

achieved in two different configurations. One is large tubular stranders with bullhead configuration, mainly used for fiber optic submarine cables. The other is planetary armoring lines for heavy power transmission cables. These are produced on large and heavy machines for a high number of wires (144 wires); they are applied by a single or dual cage in tandem operation. These machines also include automated loading systems to reduce the change-over time. In addition to the increased demand for submarine cables, there has also been a demand for large cross section cables (127 wires) produced on rigid stranders. These stranders have included automatic loading systems, shaped wire stranding heads, heavy compaction systems, water-blocking application systems for yarn and powder. All these features also needed to include machines that provide consistent and smooth tension across all wires. FLYMCA designs and manufactures the machinery in Spain. WIRE DÜSSELDORF 2022

Perspective: IWMA Chairman Don Neville Don Neville, managing director of RichardsApex Europe, Ltd., is the new IWMA chairman. The U.K.based body is the world’s largest and most influential international corporate association for the wire and cable industry. Below, he discusses IWMA and wire 2022. For more on IWMA, go to www.iwma.org. WJI: First, congratulations on being named chairman of the IWMA. How does it feel to be in that position? Neville: It’s motivating to be recognized by our membership and to have the opportunity to guide the growth and development of IWMA for the next three years. 2020 was our 50th anniversary and we had made considerable plans to share this milestone with our members and the industry as a whole. Then the pandemic interfered. We’re now 52, and have extensive history, tradition and a phenomenal amount of expertise in the body of our membership. We are using that foundation to build programs for the future. In a nutshell, it’s taking the essence of our first 50 years of IWMA and blending it with the opportunities and challenges now in front of us to meet our ambitions for the next 50. That first step is now at wire Düsseldorf WJI: How important are trade shows, and especially wire Düsseldorf? How has it kept its top position? Neville: At its simplest, trade shows allow members to exhibit their products and keep abreast of industry and market trends. Düsseldorf is the premier event. People come from all over the world because it’s the place you can be sure to see everything that needs to be seen. We are in regular communication with Messe since we have been supportive partners for decades. We are also active at their satellite exhibitions, but Düsseldorf is the Messe’s home city, and they have continued to put enormous resources into creating the state-of-the-art exhibition center we know today. It is an outstanding networking platform, a great place for friends and colleagues to meet and do business. WJI: How disruptive was the 2020 event cancellation? Neville: It had a direct economic impact on organizers and exhibitors, but I’m a glass-half-full guy, as it also led us to explore new ways of working and keeping connected. What was lost in 2020, simply, was the opportunity to assemble. An enormous amount of business is conducted there, and many of those opportunities were missed. WJI: Will many IWMA members be there, and what are your IWMA expectations for the event? Neville: Our membership covers more than 230 companies, and more than 50% (and rising) plan to exhibit. We also have some members visiting the show who will use the IWMA stand and the benefits it provides, including our “meeting pods,” a new introduction for 2022. The pods allow our visiting and exhibiting members to invite clients

IWMA Chairman Don Neville and customers to the stand for meetings while taking advantage of IWMA stand hospitality. I plan to talk to as many members as possible, and hopefully enlist a few new ones! I’m also keen to introduce our IWMA education awardees to the breadth and scope of their new industry. WJI: What are your industry expectations? Neville: I think, overall, that we’ll see solid and enthusiastic participation. There will be some geographical limits on the show. Some countries are still shut down, and that will limit who can come, but as we get closer to June, the number of exhibitors and visitors who plan to attend has steadily risen. Already there is a lot of discussion as to what people are looking forward to: a return to what’s familiar and anticipation about what will be new. There obviously is pent-up demand, and I think the numbers will be a strong indicator of how things will be in 2024, when hopefully we are closer to normal. Considering how important wire Düsseldorf is, just the fact that in 2022 it’s back can’t help but make you feel good for the future. WJI: Any thoughts on how Russia’s war with Ukraine will play out for the wire and cable industry? Neville: Politics and the awful humanitarian cost aside, from a purely business viewpoint it’s difficult to predict the effect, except to say there will be one. Sanctions on the Russian economy will affect companies doing business there. It probably won’t affect wire Düsseldorf, but things could be very different in a few months. This war is beyond the scope of what industry can or cannot do, so as ever, we have to be flexible enough to adapt to changing conditions.

trade fairs, where the SMS Group will look at how digitalization is changing the whole value-added chain and enabling greater efficiency, higher quality, and more flexibility from a number of different angles. The first impetus arising from digitalization and Industry 4.0 concerns the design and manufacture of machines and components for the production of tube and wire itself. The aim of the “smart mill” is to use data and the corresponding parameters as a basis for business and process control related decisions. This type of measuring system for tube, pipe, bar, and section mills is to be displayed. smsgroup.com.

of cables for the global cable market. One highlight is the X-ray measuring system X-RAY 6000 PRO that is used for the measurement of wall thickness, eccentricity, the diameter and ovality of cables with up to three different material layers, for example in insulating and jacketing lines. The combination of the X-RAY 6000 PRO with the processor system ECOCONTROL 6000 allows for an automatic control of the wall thickness. By reducing the wall thickness by, for instance, 5%, not only raw material consumption is reduced, and plastic material savings in the six-figure range are also achieved. Thus, Sikora also offers online and offline inspection, sorting and analysis systems for plastic pellets. By using inspection and sorting systems, contamination can be detected and automatically sorted out, breakdowns eliminated and material costs saved. With the premiere of the FIBER TENSION 6003, Sikora A widens its product family for quality control of optical fibers. The gauge head offers an extremely fast, reliable and precise tension measurement and control. Due to the high measuring rate of up to 10 kHz and the application of the birefringence principle, the stand-alone gauge head is particularly attractive for manufacturers of high-end solutions. It can be used for hot as well as cold measurement of
