This section asks OEMs to explain why what they have to offer for customers is “the best of.” That claim could be for a better strander or nail-making system that either offers the lowest operating cost or the newest advanced technology, but part of the equation has to be what else a company has to offer customers. What makes it a good potential partner. Also, some companies present more technical details in entries in the Products section.

Spain’s Flymca, represented in the U.S. by QMS America, supplies rotating machinery for manufacturing all types of cable. It offers a wide range of stranders that can meet the needs for any sector, from energy and control/data cables to submarine and tube/umbilical cables. Flymca’s highly trained engineering and design department uses modern 3D design methods as well as calculation programs based on finite element analysis. The company is meticulous in assembling equipment in-house, controlling the entire process, using local suppliers. Machine commissioning and after-sales service are key company strengths. While Flymca’s most advanced models are used for producing marine cables (submarine and umbilical), the company also offers dependable traditional lines—such as for making power cables and special customized cables—that provide cost-effective production. The company’s models include rigid stranders, planetary stranders, tubular stranders, Lira stranders, drum-twister stranders, SZ stranders, double-twist stranders and greenhouse cable stranders. The planetary model can process wire from 500 to 3000 mm, including coils. The varied tension control systems include a mechanical brake with feeler arm, electromagnetic brakes, motorized cradles and dancer systems. An optional loading element has special systems for closing/opening pins, while another optional feature can add fillings from coils or rolls. There is a 100% detorsion system or common or independent variable for each coil. For details on a rigid strander, see p. 64. Flymca sells its machinery all over the world, with sales support agents. The “best of” for The MGS Group falls into three categories: handling equipment, automation and rotational equipment. The MGS Group is well known for its wide range of product handling and automation solutions including payoffs, take-ups, dancers, accumulators, capstans and more. The MGS Group acquired a firm place in the stranding technology in 2003, when it acquired Northampton Machinery. The U.K.-based company, founded in 1902, has been a highly regarded international supplier of high-speed wire and cable stranding equipment since the 1950s. Northampton today continues to supply a complete range of fine wire bunching/cable twinning machinery for the data and communications, automotive, house wiring and power cable sectors. The MGS Group will celebrate 20 years of ownership of the Northampton Machinery Company in 2023. The success the company has had with this product line is directly attributed to the robust machine designs the industry continues to value. Northampton bunchers and cablers continue to be in high demand for manufacturers producing power infrastructure; low, medium and high-voltage cable; renewable power; electric vehicles, and others. Its machines are rugged and reliable workhorses. While some other OEMs offer lighter and lighter machines, Northampton has never cut back on the rugged, dependable machine designs that customers know and rely upon for their production, which is why they get repeat orders. See p. 68 for details on one of the most versatile systems offered by Northampton Machinery: the SLB800 double-twist strander. Northampton Machinery can be contacted at tel. +44 (0) 1604 78222.

Maschinenfabrik Niehoff, represented in the U.S. by Niehoff Endex North America Inc. (NENA), has been developing and building machines for the cable industry for nearly 60 years. One example is the D series of double-twist bunching and stranding machines that include eight differently sized models for cross sections from 0.013 to 500 mm². The largest model is the type D 2002 strander, already in industrial operation, that strands insulated wires, conductor constructions for power cables, overhead lines, underground and submarine cables, flexible control, connection and motor cables as well as steel ropes. In combination with an external rotating payoff, type PTD 1000, the strander is able to strand up to 61 conductors with one another. It accepts spools with a flange diameter of 2 m and a weight of up to 12 t. The machine is designed to process wires from 1.5 to 4.8 mm into strands with a cross section of 16 to 400 mm² (Cu) or 500 mm² (Al). The lay length is steplessly variable from 50 to 500 mm, the maximum number of twists is 1000 twists/min and the maximum line speed 150 m/min. The stranded conductors can be compacted, a compacting degree of up to 13% is possible. The D 2002 (pictured) is characterized by the proven energy-saving, one-bow design; the contactless transmission of machine data within the machine; an energy-saving rotor drive of energy efficiency, class IE3; a controllable fan drive in the soundproof cabin; and the automatic opto-electronic laying system, NBAT, which allows spools to be perfectly spooled. The machine is equipped with sensors so that machine data can be recorded and analyzed according to Industry 4.0.
