EDITORIAL LETTER
Coronavirus upends wire 2020 This issue was due to go to press on Friday, Feb. 28, but before that happened Messe Düsseldorf announced that—due to concerns about the Coronavirus—it would “re-evaluate the situation” for six upcoming events at the Fairground, two of which were wire Düsseldorf and Tube Düsseldorf. The next day, it announced postponements, the dates of which were not known at the time this issue had to be sent. It is horrible news on many levels, but the organizers reported that they had no other choice. “We take the concerns about the Coronavirus that are being brought to our attention very seriously,” said Werner M. Dornscheidt, chairman of the Board of Management of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. “The safety of our customers, partners, employees and neighbours is our top priority. We are in direct contact with the responsible health authorities and trust in their recommendation.” The Coronavirus is an unknown entity whose future presence nobody can feel confident about. What is known is that wire Düsseldorf is important to many companies and people as well as the local economy, from the exhibitors that make substantial investments to all the attendees who fill local hotels and spend freely at night in the Alstadt. There are exhibitors that long ago plotted out what new technology they would introduce, and there are the thousands and thousands of key wire and cable representatives seeking new solutions. What is the value of lost opportunity? There likely are hundreds of stories, but one that stands out is Italy’s Sampsistemi. The stakes are high for the company, as it has weathered some indirect challenges, and no doubt envisioned being busy discussing their improved machinery on display, meeting with attendees to let them know that they are fully ready to be their industry partner. See p. 44. It is a story that should be told. In the past, wire Düsseldorf attendees have dealt with a structural airport fire that killed 17 people (1996) and an ash-spewing volcano at the end of the fair (2010) that grounded air travel. And now we have a virus, the ultimate “x factor” that nobody can plan for. Logistical considerations aside, when a new date hopefully is announced, per the preview that starts on p. 40 in this issue, there are a lot of reasons to opt in.

wire Düsseldorf preview Attendees seeking new, better and more cost-effective ways to make wire and cable will soon swarm the world’s largest display of such technology at the Fairgrounds of organizer Messe Düsseldorf. This preview includes booth listings, an alpha list of exhibitors, and a range of news that includes some new elements at the biennial event. Some 1,400 exhibitors are expected to present their latest innovations that span all facets of the wire and cable manufacturing process on March 30 to April 3. Combined with sister event Tube 2020, there will be some 2,600 exhibitors over 120,000 sq m on 16 halls. The technology serves the industry on multiple levels. Friedrich-Georg Kehrer, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH’s global portfolio director for metal trade fairs, observed in a press release that wire and Tube serve an important industry role. The Messe is aware of regional interests through its shows in China, India, Russia, Thailand and Brazil, and the range of evolving needs of sectors—such as automotive, Industry 4.0 and energy—but also of increasing advances in artificial intelligence. Further, there are political realities, all of which matters, “especially in these times of heightened uncertainty caused by trade tensions between the U.S., China and Europe and the U.K. due to Brexit.”

Germany’s “Eisendraht- und Stahldraht-Vereinigung” (German Iron and Steel Wire Association) reports that economic unpredictability in the wake of increasing protectionist tendencies put a burden on the industry, Kehrer said. Accordingly, the challenges are high for the wire and cable industry. “However, more cables, more lines and more wires are the positive consequence of the constant and rapid changes affecting mobility. The demands ... in terms of innovations and flexibility are rising, new drive technologies, autonomous driving or e-mobility determine the thinking and decisions made in boardrooms.” Beyond the technology, wire 2020 will offer several new elements. One is that Halls 16 and 17 will premiere the complete value chain for fasteners and springs. For the first time, the displays will include finished products in the form of fasteners, connectors and technical springs. “This means that from 2020 wire will be the new information and order W W W. platform for the producers, marketers and buyers of screws, fasteners, construction elements and fitting parts, all types of springs and bent wire parts.” The second one is the introduction of ecoMetals Trails, which is being offered for the first time for both the wire and tube events. It is part of EcoMetals, a three-part Messe program. See p. 48. A third addition will be seen at the North entrance, arranged for by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy. The idea is to help support small, young German companies that are innovative by making it more affordable to be in a pavilion. The goal is to support a “new generation of entrepreneurs (that can) decisively impact” the future of wire and cable, the announcement said. Companies must be less than 10 years old, have fewer than 50 staffers and annual revenues under 10 million euros. They will be able to exhibit at subsidized rates of up to 60%. Kehrer said that exhibitors primarily come from Italy, Great Britain, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Poland and Germany. Companies traveling to Düsseldorf from overseas come from the U.S., India, Taiwan, South Korea and China. The event will again feature country sites that include the North American Pavilion, organized by Messe Düsseldorf North America together with the Wire and Cable Industry Suppliers Association (WCISA). Attendees can buy tickets either at the show or online, with multi-day discounts available. One unknown element that could affect the plans for some exhibitors and attendees is the Coronavirus.
