PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL COMING TO THE BROWARD CENTER

Trent Soyster

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and Broadway Across America will be presenting Pretty Woman: The Musical May 4-15. The show is based on one of Hollywood’s most iconic romantic comedy films. Pretty Woman: The Musical stars Broadway superstar and Tony Award®-nominee Adam Pascal as Edward Lewis and rising star Olivia Valli as the lovely Vivian Ward. This musical’s creative team is led by two-time Tony Award® winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde), and lead producer Paula Wagner. It features an original score by Grammy® winner Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance (“Summer of ’69” and “Heaven”), and Roy Orbison and Bill Dee’s international hit song “Oh, Pretty Woman,” which inspired one of the most famous silver screen romantic stories, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. You can relive this very popular love story for the ages by visiting browardcenter.org or calling 954-462-0222 to purchase your tickets.

Photos provided by Broadway Across America

We sat down with Pretty Woman: The Musical cast member Trent Soyster, who plays Giulio and is thrilled to be dancing across the U.S. on another national tour, to learn more about the show. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers why they should buy tickets to see Pretty Woman: The Musical at the Broward Center? Trent Soyster: Pretty Woman is the ultimate feel-good musical! Whether you’re a real Broadway buff, a huge fan of the movie, or just in need of a good laugh – there’s something in the show for everyone! Not only is the score rocking, but there’s a few big dance production numbers, and the vocals in this cast are absolutely incredible. Our show feels like one big champagne toast from start to finish. I just hit my 50th performance this past weekend, and it's still a big heaping dose of serotonin every night when I hit the stage! (Continued on Page 20) #4 2022 WIREMAG.COM 5

PUBLISHER’S CORNER WE CELEBRATED PROUDLY! In this week’s issue, we bring you our photo albums of the Miami Beach Pride VIP Beach Affair, Festival and Parade. Our LGBTQ community and allies came together during Miami Beach Pride to celebrate at several fun events and parties. Additionally, this year’s Parade had numerous entries, so it was really nice to see so many people proudly marching on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. Enjoy all the photos! Also in this issue, we interview gorgeous model Nick Topel and showcase his beautiful photos taken by Abel Cruz from Photo Studio Miami. Nick has some valuable fitness and nutrition tips for anyone looking to get in shape. For Arts Newsie, I sat down with Pretty Woman: The Musical cast member Trent Soyster to preview the show, coming to the Broward Center. Last month, we published an Arts Newsie feature about the Flamenco Festival Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, for which I interviewed dancer, choreographer and director Manuel Liñán to preview his performance ¡VIVA! I went to see this performance and it was truly extraordinary. Manuel is an extremely talented and brilliant artist who created a stunning show that I will never forget. For two hours, with no intermission, Manuel and his colleagues entertained us with vibrant Flamenco dancing and music, and a performance like nothing I have ever seen before. Bravo Manuel!, and thank you for allowing us to experience your outstanding performance, which most certainly deserved all the standing ovations the audience gave to you and your fellow dancers and musicians. I also want to share with you the news that Dr. Thomas Smith and Dr. Sheryl Zayas of Care Resource Community Health Centers Inc. will be honored by Mental Health America of Southeast Florida for their positive impact on the mental wellness of others in South Florida during their 26th Annual Epic Awards on Wednesday, May 25. According to Mental Health America of Southeast Florida, “Dr. Thomas Smith and Dr. Sheryl Zayas in their work with Care Resource, have championed the Special Purpose Outreach Team (SPOT) Mobile Clinic which is a proven harm reduction model. The SPOT team addresses the current opioid crisis by taking used needles off the streets and providing clean needles along with education and recovery support services available to people who are using. They have also provided over 140 Narcan reversals in the short time they have been in operation.” Care Resource’s SPOT mobile medical clinic is the only Syringe Services Program (SSP) approved by Broward County and authorized under the Florida Infectious Disease Elimination Act (IDEA). Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live now? Nick Topel: I grew up in a small town in midwest Ohio. I went to engineering school in Columbus at Ohio State University, and now I travel back and forth between New York and Miami.

NICK TOPEL 12 WIREMAG.COM #4 2022

RC: What do you do for a living? NT: That's always a tough one explaining to my parents! I work in the fitness space as a professional model, wellness coach and social media influencer. I run a successful fanpage, and I'm also an options trader which keeps my left-brained tendencies stimulated. RC: How do you stay in shape? NT: The key is with your consistency – staying at it when you're tired, traveling or just ‘busy.’ Typically, my program is six days a week for one hour, centered around four days of weightlifting and two days of functional fitness training. As I get a bit older, I've become exceedingly more focused on my lifestyle wellness. I try to keep myself more generally active throughout the day by scheduling 10-minute walks after every meal, standing up at my desk, and taking time to stretch each night.

RC: What are your best three exercise routines that have helped you achieve your fitness goals? NT: Undulating periodization which tracks a single training session day, followed by a double training session day, followed by an active rest day was the key to achieving my procard in 2017. It's great for both hypertrophy and strength gains. German volume training where you do 10 sets of 10 reps on a single exercise is a great alternative program. HIIT under load where you're doing conventional bodybuilder lifting,

RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? NT: The thing I enjoy most about my job as a model is creating inspiration for others to lead a healthier lifestyle. RC: What is the biggest dream you would like yet to achieve? NT: I'm still working on a major fitness campaign – it would be a dream to shoot something for a company like Nike or Equinox.

RC: What is the most important fitness or nutrition tip you can share with our readers? NT: Good nutrition can seem daunting – and on the world championship stage, it is complex – but for most people it doesn't need to be that way. You want to focus on the big picture stuff. That's calories, macros and hydration. Your body is a thermodynamic system and it needs a specific number of calories each day to function properly. Understand those numbers and don't stray too far in either direction (read: don't starve yourself to lose weight, and don't eat like a glutton to ‘bulk up’). A consistent stream of protein throughout the day helps to build muscle, support your appetite, and prevent tissue breakdown (versus consuming all your daily protein in one or two huge meals). There's this myth that the more protein you eat, the

14 WIREMAG.COM #4 2022

more muscle you build. About 0.8 grams per pound of lean body mass is the optimal protein intake. So, if you weigh 200 lbs. at 15% bodyfat, then you need about 135 g. of protein per day (200 lbs.*85%*0.8 g./lb. = 135g.). Further, water supports nearly every process in the body and the composition of your muscle tissue is roughly 70% water. You need to be focused on staying well hydrated. The feeling of dehydration is often mistaken for hunger (think of how hungry you are when you're hungover...). Most of my clients aim for 1 gallon+ per day or 128 ounces. Don't starve yourself. Protein at every meal. Drink water all day.

RC: Who is the person that inspires you the most? Why? NT: I've had so many influential mentors in my life, each of them lending new perspectives on personal growth, relationships and business. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a huge source of inspiration for me since I was a little kid, both personally and professionally. I've met the guy twice and the one thing I admire the most about Arnold is that he never accepts anything less than excellence. I try to model my life that way, too. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? NT: Please follow me on Instagram @NickTopel, and check me out for inspiration, wellness advice and my crazy trips modeling around the world. Thanks for giving me a chance to speak with you here about my passions!

Giulio, and dancing Jerry Mitchell’s fantastic choreography has also been a dream of mine from the very start. I’m all around thrilled to be dancing all across the U.S. as Giulio! RC: What is the best part of performing in Pretty Woman: The Musical? TS: The best part of this whole experience for me is the opportunity to see so many different places around the U.S. The fact that the tour goes to so many locations is just such an awesome experience, and a great part of that is watching how different audiences react and respond to our show depending on what city/state we are in. Not only am I living my dream as an actor/dancer, but I’m a total travel-junkie too, so this type of job is right up my alley and something that I would love to continue to do in my career! From Los Angeles, CA to Denver, CO to right here in Fort Lauderdale, FL, we are definitely getting the experience of a lifetime.

Photo provided by Broadway Across America

RC: What is it like being a cast member of a Broadway show based on such an iconic motion picture? TS: This entire process has been a total dream-come-true for me. I’ve wanted to be a performer for as long as I can remember, so to have been cast in the first national tour of this musical is the biggest honor! Because the movie is such a fan-favorite, there are tons of iconic moments from the movie that will be in the musical, but perhaps my favorite part about this musical are the fun elements that we have added to the story and characters that you know and love for the musical version of Pretty Woman. When the audience applauds for the red dress entrance or is waiting for the classic polka-dot dress polo scene, it makes our job that much more fun. Look out for the tango number in the first act danced by yours truly – my personal fav! RC: Tell our readers about the character you play in Pretty Woman: The Musical and what you enjoy the most about your role? TS: I play Giulio, the bellhop at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. He’s a goofy, always in the wrong place at the wrong time, lovable type of guy, and I am truly so grateful to be cast in this role and bringing this show all over the country. Giulio works hand-in-hand with the hotel manager, Mr. Thompson (played by the flawless Kyle Taylor Parker), and getting to create our characters’ relationship dynamic on stage has been a true joy! There are a few feature dance moments that I get to do as 20 WIREMAG.COM #4 2022

RC: What is the biggest challenge audiences may not know you experience as a cast member on a Broadway musical? TS: People tend to be pretty shocked when I tell them that we perform this show eight times a week! For someone who has been in theater his whole life, this has become sort of second-nature to me, but a lot of people don’t realize that this is our full-time job, and we do the show six days in a week with only one day off – and that often ends up being our travel day to the next city. Finding the stamina and maintaining the energy required to put on each show and give each audience our 100% can be taxing on the mind and body. I try to find some quiet space in each city, whether that be a coffee shop or an afternoon on a beach (hi Deerfield Beach!) to relax and get away from the craziness that comes with being in what we call the ‘tour bubble.’ Touring companies become a family and, through thick and thin, we are always there to support each other because at the end of the day my coworkers are also my friends – the folks I travel with and spend my free time with. RC: What else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers about yourself or Pretty Woman: The Musical? TS: A few fun facts about me and the show: 1) I’ve been to 38 out of the 50 states – a lot of them thanks to touring! 2) I was previously seen in the National Tour of Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville which played at the Broward Center in November of 2019. 3) I went to school for musical theatre with a minor in commercial dance at Pace University in New York City. I also have a passion for choreography and teaching, so you can see more at www.trentsoyster.com! 4) I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA, but have been living in New York City for about six years now. 5) My favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate peanut butter, and my go-to coffee is an iced oat milk latte. 6) Follow my adventures on tour @trent.soyster on Instagram!
