FIVE HEALTHY HABITS TO HELP REDUCE STRESS Meditate Incorporate meditation and mindfulness practices into your day to give yourself a few minutes to create some distance from daily stress. Some studies show meditation can reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, support the immune system and increase your ability to process information.

Between work, family obligations and a constantly changing world, people in the United States are stressed. In fact, U.S. workers are among the most stressed in the world, according to a State of the Global Workplace study. While some stress is unavoidable and can be good for you, constant or chronic stress can have real consequences for your mental and physical health. Chronic stress can increase your lifetime risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also lead to unhealthy habits like overeating, physical inactivity and smoking, while also increasing risk factors, including high blood pressure, depression and anxiety. However, a scientific statement from the American Heart Association shows reducing stress and cultivating a positive mindset can improve health and well-being. To help people understand the connection between stress and physical health, the American Heart Association offers these science-backed insights to help reduce chronic stress. Stay Active Exercise is one of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy and release stress. Physical activity is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function, and lower risk of depression. It can also help increase energy and improve quality of sleep. The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or a combination.

Practice Positivity A positive mindset can improve overall health. Studies show a positive mindset can help you live longer, and happy individuals tend to sleep better, exercise more, eat better and not smoke. Practice positive self-talk to help you stay calm. Instead of saying, “everything is going wrong,” re-frame the situation and remind yourself “I can handle this if I take it one step at a time.” Show Gratitude Gratitude – or thankfulness – is a powerful tool that can reduce levels of depression and anxiety and improve sleep. Start by simply writing down three things you’re grateful for each day. Find a Furry Friend Having a pet may help you get more fit; lower stress, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar; and boost overall happiness and well-being. When you see, touch, hear or talk to companion animals, you may feel a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing and happiness. At the same time, stress hormones are suppressed. Dog ownership is also associated with a lower risk of depression, according to research published by the American Heart Association. Stress 101 Understanding stress is an important step in managing and reducing it. Consider these things to know about stress and how it could affect your life: • Today, one in three adults in the U.S. report being worried or depressed. • Higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol are linked to increased risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular events like heart disease and stroke. • The top sources of stress are money, work, family responsibilities and health concerns. • Work-related stress is associated with a 40% increased risk of cardiovascular disease like heart attack and stroke. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that may have been hidden in your body. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY. Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY. Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%).

Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months, and may give you HBV medicine.

ABOUT BIKTARVY BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements. BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine that contains: dofetilide rifampin any other medicines to treat HIV-1

BEFORE TAKING BIKTARVY Tell your healthcare provider if you: Have or have had any kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis infection. Have any other health problems. Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if BIKTARVY can harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking BIKTARVY. Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take: Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-thecounter medicines, antacids, laxatives, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist. BIKTARVY and other medicines may affect each other. Ask your healthcare provider and pharmacist about medicines that interact with BIKTARVY, and ask if it is safe to take BIKTARVY with all your other medicines.

These are not all the possible side effects of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY. PUBLISHER’S CORNER WE MUST FIGHT AND REMAIN VIGILANT! The recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, and the subsequent comments by Clarence Thomas, are a stark reminder that the fight for our LGBTQ rights will never end because there are people in this nation who will always discriminate against us – even from the bench of the highest court of the land. Some of these same people are not afraid to demonstrate a remarkable level of hypocrisy with very obvious double standards. Associate Justice Thomas’ wife openly encouraged and supported insurrectionists loyal to Donald Trump who wanted to steal the election in an attempted coup d’état that included a violent attack by a crazed mob on our Congress. Thomas has refused to recuse himself from Supreme Court matters related to this attack against our democracy, despite his wife's actions. Let’s never forget that the anarchists who stormed the Capitol loudly called for the hanging of the Vice President of the United States, and Virginia Thomas kept pushing the loony conspiracies that led to the disgusting violence we all witnessed on January 6, 2021. As Pride Month comes to an end, I want to remind everyone in our community and our allies that we must always remain very vigilant and active in our daily lives and in every single election. Get out and vote, and encourage everyone you know to do the same because elections have consequences that can lead to the violation and reversal of our very hard fought LGBTQ rights. Extremists are now sitting on the Supreme Court ready to act, so we must enact change as soon as possible. DT: I’m a medical rep and clinical trainer in laser aesthetics. RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? DT: I love the end results. I’ve worked with some amazing photographers and each experience has been different. Seeing the finished product is the payoff from the hard work you put in. Everyone thinks stepping in front of a camera is easy, but trust me, it’s hard work. But I love it! RC: What are your top three exercises to stay in shape? DT: Cardio, abs and drop sets.

RC: Tell our readers about the anti-bullying initiative you are involved with? DT: Bully Zero is an organization that offers support and guidance to bully victims along with educating people. Online bullying in particular has increased alarmingly over the years, and it’s concerning how this topic doesn’t get talked about more. No one should ever have to feel less than they are because of the words or actions of others. The negative things said to others have consequences and it's time that bullies are held accountable for their actions. Everyone deserves to feel safe and loved. RC: What are your favorite things to do in your free time? DT: I love baking because it’s my total stress relief. I also like watching movies and catching up with friends.
