ALL WIRED UP
BY THOMAS BARKER
LABOR DAY SPARKS SOCIAL SEASON As we gear up for another fabulous holiday weekend in South Florida, I can’t help but revel in the fact that summer is inching closer and closer to an end! Now I don’t know about you, but even though I love living in South Florida, I do not enjoy running from one air-conditioned oasis to another.
items, including trips to foreign lands, amazing art pieces, dining certificates, spa treatments, and so much more.
So every year, when Labor Day Weekend arrives, I immediately feel the need to celebrate, which is why for the past few years, we have dedicated this annual issue to the incredible events taking place over Labor Day Weekend.
Next up is the annual SAVE Dade Halloween party, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 29th, right before Halloween. This is definitely THE Halloween party to attend, as it always attracts thousands of ghouls and goblins, looking to let loose and take part in all the Halloween festivities.
In our Local’s Guide to Labor Day Weekend, you’ll find the inside scoop on the hottest events, parties, and soirees taking place over the next few days. And speaking of fantastic events, now is the time to start gearing up for the fall social season and all the wonderful things taking place over the next few months! First up is one of the biggest social events of the gay social season, The Task Force’s Annual Recognition Dinner. Every year, fashionistas, local politicians, celebrities, the gay mafia, and everything in between come together to not only raise some much-needed funds for the Task Force, but to also celebrate our local heroes. The event will begin with a VIP cocktail reception, where partygoers will sip on champagne and cocktails, while perusing a silent auction that has been known to feature some over-the-top
This year, the Task Force will be honoring Georg Ketelhohn and the super gorgeous Ben Cohen – a straight rugby star who dedicated his philanthropic efforts to the LGBT community. Let’s just say it’s not just the thought of the delicious nibbles that has me drooling already!
This year, SAVE Dade has selected the theme, Hellrotika: Seed of the Beast, which features an assortment of deadly brides, hell bent DJs, and tons free flowing cocktails! Of course, no gay social season would be complete without the return of White Party Weekend. This will be the first year that White Party will take place at a new location. The folks at Care Resource have not only moved White Party from its previous location to The Miami Seaquarium, but they have also changed the day of the event. Now, White Party will take place on a Friday, November 25th, as opposed to its usual Saturday slot. One of the major highlights of the new location is that White Party will now go until 4 a.m. instead of its usual midnight cut off time! You can bet these boys will be enjoying every single minute, partying under the stars!
Immediately after White Party, it will be time to trade in your glow sticks for your spectacles, as we prepare for the largest art festival in the Western Hemisphere, Art Basel. Every year, this festival attracts tens of thousands of art lovers and partygoers from around the globe, who want to indulge in all that makes South Florida so fantastically glamorous. Of all the festivals, Art Basel continues to be the most extravagant event in South Florida. One of my favorite events takes place at the end of February – The South Beach Wine and Food Festival. You may be thinking that you have plenty of time to get your tickets, but don’t be fooled. These tickets always sell out way in advance. Last year, it was impossible to get a ticket to the Grand Tasting by the middle of January! Of course, everyone loves a good dance party on the sand, and every March Winter Party delivers just that. Winter Party just seems to get bigger and bigger every year, and I have no doubt it will only get larger this year! To round out the gay social season, we have our very own Miami Beach Gay Pride. This year, the Miami Beach Gay Pride Board of Directors have promised A-list headlining talent and an expected attendance of close to 60,000 people! I can’t wait! Over the next few months, it will surely be a busy time in South Florida, so stay tuned to Wire Magazine for all the details on where to go and what to do!

They are our family, partners, friends, business associates, co-workers, confidants, service providers, and total strangers that we live and interact with on a regular basis. The people around us have a tremendous influence in our lives, our happiness, our success, our failures, and definitely have a lot to do with shaping our past and our future. That’s why it is so important to surround ourselves with great people that can help us grow personally and professionally and make us better. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done sometimes. I have also found from personal experience that, as much as I love living in Miami, our American Riviera is a transient city where it is sometimes very difficult to find and keep good friends and employees that can fit into the category of great people that can truly enhance our personal and professional lives.

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH THERE’S NO NEED TO PANIC! Every human feels anxiety on occasion; it is a part of life. We all know what it is like to feel worry, nervousness, fear, and concern. But millions of people (an estimated 15 percent of the population) suffer from devastating and constant anxiety that severely affects, and sometimes highly restricts, their lives. They experience panic attacks, phobias, extreme shyness, obsessive thoughts, and compulsive behaviors. The feeling of anxiety is a constant dominating force that disrupts their lives. Some become prisoners in their own homes, unable to leave to work, drive, or go to the grocery store. For people with panic attacks, phobias, and agoraphobia, anxiety is more than just an occasional wave of apprehension. WHAT IS PANIC DISORDER? Panic Disorder is a condition in which a person has panic attacks without warning. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), about five percent of the adult population in the US suffers from panic attacks. Some experts say that this number is actually higher, since many people experience panic attacks but never receive treatment. A panic attack is extremely upsetting and frightening. It typically lasts several minutes, but in some cases, it lasts longer or strikes several times in a short time period. Often, a panic attack is followed by feelings of depression and helplessness. Most people who have experienced a panic attack say that their greatest fear is that the attack will happen again. Many times, a person who has experienced a panic attack doesn’t know its cause. WHAT IS A PHOBIA? While most adults know that their fears are extreme and irrational, they are sometimes unable to control them. As a result, they dread and attempt to avoid the thing or situation that they fear. Sometimes, a person’s fear is so strong that it interferes with his or her daily life, job, and social relationships. The person’s life may be affected in a variety of ways, such as missing out on a promotion because of a fear of flying, or being unable to go to crowded places. The fear may also cause extreme distress. Such fears are considered a Phobia if they are not reasonable. Phobias often begin in childhood and may coincide with a traumatic event. A fear of birds, for example, may begin when a child is frightened by a bird flying into his or her house. Often, phobias that begin in childhood fade by adulthood. WHAT IS AGORAPHOBIA? Agoraphobia is the disabling fear that prevents one from leaving home or other safe place. This disorder usually stems from the fear of having a panic attack in a specific situation. When in that situation, a person with agoraphobia may experience a panic attack if getting away or getting help seems difficult or embarrassing. The term, agoraphobia, refers to a fear of open spaces or the marketplace. People with agoraphobia avoid settings where there are crowds of people, such as stores, and bus, train, or auto travel. They may also avoid tall places, such as buildings and bridges. People who suffer from agoraphobia often become extremely anxious, avoiding all but a few situations that seem safe. Some are unable to leave their homes for years at a time. TREATMENT OF ANXIETY Most people who suffer from anxiety disorders begin to feel better when they receive the proper treatment. Cognitive Therapy. The person learns how to identify and change unproductive thought patterns by observing his or her feelings and learning to separate realistic from unrealistic thoughts. Behavior Therapy. This treatment helps the person alter and control unwanted behavior. Systematic Desensitization is a type of behavior therapy often used to help people with phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and agoraphobia. The patient is exposed to anxiety-producing stimuli one small step at a time, which gradually increases his or her tolerance to situations that have produced disabling anxiety. Relaxation Training. Many people with anxiety disorders benefit from self-hypnosis, guided visualization, and biofeedback. Relaxation Training is often included in psychotherapy. Medication. Antidepressant and antianxiety medications can help restore chemical imbalances that cause symptoms of anxiety. The use of medication, especially in combination with psychotherapy, is an effective treatment for many people. Dr. Gregg A.
