Jesus Teaches in Parables Jesus, who is God, came to the world in order to save humankind. He was born as an ordinary man and lived several dozen years until He died on the cross, rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, where He lives with God the Father, the Holy Spirit and the angels and saints. While Jesus was still living on earth, one day He left His family home in Nazareth and traveled around Palestine. He wanted as many people as possible to hear His teachings. During the time of Jesus, newspapers, radio, TV and Internet were not available, He became a wandering Teacher. He moved from one place to another and spoke to the great crowds that gathered to hear Him speak. He also performed a great number of miracles and in doing so, He confirmed that what He was teaching was true. Jesus spoke about God the Father and about His great love for every person. He explained the meaning of Kingdom of Heaven and taught the people to live properly in order to be saved and to go to heaven. He often told parables to the people, because they enabled the hearers to understand His teachings. So what are the parables? They are various examples and comparisons that Jesus willingly told as simple stories, so that one could easily imagine the situation. They touched upon particular situations taken from real life, such as house building, working in the fields or paying off debts. However, they had always an additional meaning which taught about very important matters, such as listening to the Word of God, and the importance of perseverance and of forgiveness. W hen properly understood, the parables enabled the hearers to receive and fulfill Jesus’ words.

Jesus Meets the Children When going to listen to Jesus, parents often took their children with them. The apostles thought that the children were too young to understand what Jesus was speaking about, so they forbaded the children to approach Him. But Jesus rebuked the apostles for doing this, because He wanted to meet the children, too. Once He even gave to His listeners the model of children to imitate. He said: “Unless you become like little children you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Then He took the children in His arms and blessed them. Surely, children were listening to Jesus’ parables with interest, imagining them willingly and guessing their meaning. We too will experience a great adventure of discovering what Jesus’ parables are about. You will find twenty of them in this book. Each one of the parables is treated in four points. I ASK. I ask the question that highlights the most important parts of the stories. The question will help us to guess the parable’s meaning. I READ. In this part you can read the parable that was told by Jesus. I UNDERSTAND. A short commentary containing information that enables us to understand the parable’s meaning. The parable’s aim is to teach us something important and which still applies to the modern reader. I PRAY. When we have understood the parable, we thank Jesus for it. We also ask Him for those things for which we need to live according to His teachings and as contained in the Word of God. “Anyone who has ears for listening should listen.” Jesus often encouraged people to listen carefully to His words in this way. We can add: Anyone who has eyes for watching should carefully read and look at the illustrations. In the parables there are many invaluable treasures hidden inside. Everybody can search and discover them!

Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of God belongs.

1111The Parable of the Happy Shepherd Luke 15:4-7

I ASK God likes it when we are good and do not commit sins. But if someone is bad and does something wrong, does God not want to know them at all? Read the parable told by Jesus.

I READ When one of you has a hundred sheep, and loses one, what would that person do? He would leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the missing one until he finds it. And when he finds it, he joyfully takes it on his shoulder and carries it home. Then he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them: “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.” Jesus said also: “I tell you, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner repenting than over ninety-nine upright people who have no need of repentance.”

99

The good shepherd goes after the missing sheep until he finds it.

I UNDERSTAND God takes care of all His people. He also loves those who act badly and do not observe His commandments. We say about these people that they wander about like the sheep in this parable. God, who is the Good Shepherd, keeps worrying about the lost sheep, but He very much wants to regain it, so it does not perish. He goes after it until He finds it. Then He is truly happy, and there is a feast in heaven. The sinner who repents, as well as the people who are good, are both important to Jesus. But the sinner needs to take a little more care, like children who are ill; to them their parents show another kind of care than to the healthy children.

I PRAY Dear Jesus, thank You for being the Good Shepherd. I do not want to get lost but when it happens to me, I know You will go after me until You find me. Find also all those who are wandering and in danger. I want You to be the most happy Shepherd. Amen.

Now translate and remember the meaning of the following words or phrases: a hundred sheep desert until rejoice in heaven
