Posters review Author Sofka Ketamine

Michael Tkalich

Let’s start the review topic with Michael Tkalich’s work, who has been back to deal with SFM after having a long break. This time he’s introduced a new poster about aliens in the lead-up to the new thematic Team Fortress 2 update, “Invasion”. On the surgical table, we see a black humaniform alien and some doctors gathered around, who don’t look like people who offer mercy. There are some details such as lots of cuts on the alien’s face and prosected breast, which reveal the topic perfectly. It seems that for medical workers, science is the first thing going ahead the life itself and other “unneeded” stuff. On the table there are various documents and secret objects painted by highlighter. Possibly, these are the taken things when the alien was captured. On the photo there is the time, where this is taken place, and the scientific 3

base location. Although, we only know that the action is taken place in Mexico. Looking on technique of performance, the poster is done amazingly. Brilliant lighting, wonderful posing and excellent editing are the parts of a good poster. Tkalich is quite a precise person, who spends lots of time doing one thing. But, regrettably, that poster isn’t ideal. Written words look dislikeable, curve and inaccurate. Nevertheless, the author has given another version of the picture without signs and cancels. Also, the alien’s injuries and cuts seem weakly and unclear. And it is a mystery how and why they have appeared there. In spite of these, the poster is perfectly done, which is pleasant to look upon.

Unlike Tkalich, Sergey Myasnikov created more “everyday” CS posters. The plot is about Counter-Terrorists, who are resting and preparing a tasty chicken while the Terrorists do their evil things. Perfect and unusual story realization using non-existent geometric figures make us to praise the author. However, the lighting is a bit wrong as it is very hard to do accurate lighting. On the one side the sun is shining like at 7 o’clock and at 11 o’clock on the top, which is quite confusing.

But I repeat that this is more than forgivable. The author’s work will be marked as “Best work of the week”, which means that the artwork is done professionally.

Alexander Plutenko

Next poster by Alexander Plutenko is a copy of a frame in the popular film called “Terminator”. At first sight, the picture is very realistic and unique. And when we look at it attentively, specifically at the terminator, we can mark that textures are not perfect just as the number of polygons. But only nerds look on posters attentively, so these are not disadvantages. The real mistake is on the poster’s background. In spite of all efforts spent, Terminators depicted there seem static as they’ve been the copies of each other. Nevertheless, this is well-done. And it got as much respect as it deserved.

Skynet is watching you.

DillyDong

DillyDong’s work is the preview of recently produced workshop items, but the poster is interesting and well-done. We see pyro gathered by a huge number of cats, which are everywhere on the artwork. Among other previews, this poster is notable for its pleasant, warm, and cold lighting, balanced colors and highquality work. With every poster, come disadvantages. There are some sharp angles and cut hats. But in its turn, these are not very disagreeable for previews.

Mew!

Doritos Pope

Then we pay attention to Doritos Pope’s Storm Trooper walking around a forest. This poster is done in calm greenybrown colors. It looks like screenshot but not completely. Looking on it attentively, we mark chromatic aberration on Storm Trooper. And there is a bright light on him, which is real mystery for us. The thing is that the background is too cloudy to have such the lighting. But in general, the work put into it is quite good.

Aberration a little bit closer 7

Uberchain

And the last reviewed poster is sweet Heavy wearing girl cheerleader’s clothes done by Uberchain. The picture is the workshop’s items preview just as DillyDong’s poster. The bright and fun atmosphere of the image makes us smile. At first glace, we understand who the main character is on the poster, as they are placed in the focus of the image. Also, not excessively elaborating the background makes the picture pleasant to look at, while the well-done lighting completes the work perfectly.

Mommy always will support her child, unlike her boyfriend 8

Feedback

Rummy.SM That is some awesome presentation this is. it would feel so nice to actually read it psychically. It really oozes a warm feeling from the fonts, to the way it looks.

Dat Lobo While you guys did a good job, I was biting my lip on a few things, cause this is the kind of thing I’ve been doing for the last few years as a career. But for a first go at it, you did fine. And I really could nitpick the living hell out of it, but eh, I’ll let ya learn the hard way :P.

Metaru What a fantastic thing. Hope you people get the exposure and could keep working on this, i’d be sure to read this fully in the next days.

9

Frying Dutchman The frontcover you have there was quite offputting but I was surprised to find some cool content inside. Might be worth putting an artist or two at work to spice everything up

Dr. Ocsid Pretty damn neat idea, and pulled off pretty decently. If I could have any complaint, it would be the sometimes poor English in places. Also, your descriptions of DotA and Dota 2 were pretty barebones.

kos8bit I just looked through it and going to read it later, but here is what i think now...So, where and when can i buy one that is on paper?

Urban Beauty Urbanator speaks about his artwork and life

Hello, Urbanator! First, we would like to know what kind of person you are? Tell about yourself Hello! Thank you for inviting me to partake in an interview for your source magazine, its great to be given this opportunity! Well if I was to briefly describe myself, I would consider myself witty, well mannered and modest. I’d certainly label myself as an introvert - I throughly enjoy my own company and rarely ever find myself in states of boredom, so composing images is the perfect time to relax and chillout with my own thoughts. Though I still try to maintain a relatively healthy social circle of close friends, overall I’m rather content to shut the world out for an afternoon and get the creative juices flowing, if only for a few hours. I could try and list off any other characteristics to describe myself further, but I think the artwork is the real reason why I’m here! All your works are very grand and include lot’s of detail. How do you imagine all these fantastic compositions? Thanks, this question I have a lot of time for! When I first started getting into creating scenes, back when I was using Garry’s Mod, I couldn’t have ever imagined being in the position where I am now. Incomparison to my artworks today, my images were rushed. I was more focused on the quantity and less on the quality...well actually that isn’t entirely accurate, but I certainly didn’t spend as much effort on details, even minor one that I should have done. Over time I learnt to practice a great deal of patience when posing and editing art. Seemingly this has paid off as I have a sizable following of supporters from sites such as Deviantart and tumblr. Seeing 15

peoples responses is really encouraging! Futhermore, much of my artworks, both in terms of compositions and themes are greatly inspired from other sources, which leads rather nicely into the next question! What inspires you? Do you have a muse? I’ve been inspired in so many different ways over the years, so naturally I have varying sources of inspiration, but I would deem them as the typical sources you’d imagine. I am something of a film buff; watching and observing films influences my ideas on both image themes and various techniques, such as lighting and camera work. Likewise music can stir and inspire me, though unsurprisingly, videogames encompass my largest chunk of inspiration. The vast majority of my art is fanart of characters, originating and inspired from their respective games. The sheer volume of artistic talent on sites like Deviantart, has greatly influenced my work. I have also been moved by a number of Facepunch individuals when I began using Gmod, people I looked up to when I first started posing; Chestymcgee, Vman, Joazzz, MrWhitefolks and Uberslug, to name a few. They had all inspired me in the beginning with their unique artworks (and some of them still do today). Other notable users include Agilor, Cpt., DPfilms, lonefirewarrior, p0nystark, Squiddy and themask, all of whom continue to serve as a source of creativity for me! Please tell us, how did you get involved in poster-making? Rather unexcitidly, truth be told. I was going through a very low phase in my life after I left a job working behind a bar,

which I just wasn’t suited to. Unbeknownst to me at just how severe the situation was going to get, a period of recession took grip on the country and finding work was horrendous. I was out of a job for months, during which I was searching for work wherever I could. With a lot of free time on my hands, I decided to try and find some kind of hobby. A friend had mentioned about Garrys Mod and the numerous things you could do in it, so for kicks I downloaded it. I later learnt about the more creative aspects of it and after finding Facepunch, began posing images. I was greatly inspired by peoples works on FP. That was about six years ago and even though I’m now using a different programme, I like to think I’ve made considerable leaps and bounds! The transition from Gmod to SFM was fairly smooth. Which program do you prefer – SFM or Garry’s Mod?

Oh without a doubt SFM. The Source Filmmaker feels more like a tool while Gmod felt more like a toy. Creating art has been far less stressful since swapping over and I’ve not regretted it. Having said that, Garrysmod has changed from when I stopped using it, so I don’t know how it would fare today. However, SFM has so many options to play with when creating a scene and from a technical standpoint, theres still much for me to explore in the programme. Don’t get me wrong, Gmod was fun to use and I created some neat stuff with it, but I had a lot of stress while working with it. I just pray that SFM continues to receive updates and is not forgotten about, though I’m not too hopeful. What were your first posters in SFM and GMod? Unfortunately, i’ve lost a lot of my early Gmod images I’ve lost, but I do still have the very first image I posed, back in mid-2009.

I do still have the very first image I posed, back in mid-2009 17

Clearly I had been playing a lot of Gears of War at the time. For my first real pose, even now I don’t think its too shoddy. I mean the lighting is pretty poor (too dark for one thing), the posing is lackluster (Fenix isn’t even gripping his gun) and the composition isn’t great, but what can you expect for your first time! Obviously there was no editing done to this, apart from adding black bars to the top and bottom of the image. For some reason there was a phase around that time when adding black bars was cool... On the flip side we have my first image posed in SFM, which I uploaded in September 2012. Quite a turn around, from Locust to Nurses! At this point I had a good understanding of how to use Photoshop and I was just getting to grips on the posing in SFM. Overall, this remains a favourite of mine, though of course its not without its flaws. Mostly the lighting could do with some work. Incidentally, Silent Hill is one of my favourite horror series, so I had a

lot of fun with this! This was inspired by a particular scene from the film series. What would you advise to beginner poster-makers? What did you want to know when you were a beginner too? When I first started composing images, I was naturally incredibly rusty. I recall asking individuals on Facepunch, who could edit, to assist me with the post processing on my images. Today, it seems almost absurd to think I had to ask for help editing whole scenes! Admitidly, I now put a great amount of effort into editing using Photoshop to try and set myself apart, but the posing aspect, when you create the scenes in either Gmod or SFM, is far more crucial. Posing, camera work, lighting and setting up the scene generally is like the main slice of the cake; editing is the icing on top. Basically, for people looking to start making posters, I would advise that they need to nail the posing side first. Once you’re comfortable

We have my first image I posed in SFM, which I uploaded in September 2012 18

in that regard, then editing can come into play if you so choose. Editing is optional. Furthermore, I would seriously hammer the point home to practice patience. I can spend hours working on images and usually the time invested pays off. Over time I’ve continued to invest more and more time into individual scenes, and it shows when compared to my earlier artworks. Quality over quantity is a phrase I almost religiously practice! Learning and understanding other aspects such as proper use of lighting (the three-point lighting setup for example) and the correct use of depth of field when utilizing the camera are again, also important! It 19

also doesn’t hurt to use reference images for assistance when posing. Tell us about your experience in porting models. What exactly did you export? Actually, I don’t know the first thing about porting models! The models I released over on SFMlab were not ported by me, they are assets that I commissioned a long while back from friends. However, when I asked their permission if could release them publically, permission if could release them publically, the porters didn’t want any recognition, preferring for the most part to remain incognito. Either that or they just weren’t particularly

sure much of it could be transitioned over into animation, I’m currently reluctant to make that change. Though I’m positive some of my followers would want me to! When and how did you gain such popularity? Obviously because of your excellent posters, but was there something else?

Have you ever created any videos?

Did no one mention to you about my good looks and charm? No you are indeed correct in making the obvious assumption about my artwork as the catalyst for my fanbase. I think it was around early 2011 that my artwork really started to draw attention, though I had already been recieving some excellent critique and comments from people before then. As my time with Gmod came to an end around mid 2012, I had created some of my more memorable artworks which again, gained some great response. Since switching to SFM though, my fanbase has really skyrocketed. This can be easily attributed to my developed skills with posing and editing. My work in post processing is arguably the biggest weapon I have in my arsenel, setting myself apart from other users, and the same can be said for them too. However, as I generally stick to fanart, creating artworks of some of my favourite characters in gaming, that tends to help with getting noticed. My Batman themed artwork inparticular went down a storm on sites like Deviantart. The ‘mature’ artwork that I’ve created recently has also been well received.

No, I’ve never really delved into animation. Its taken me so long to developthe skills I have now with still images, using photoshop and such during post processing, that switching over would require me dropping a lot of what I’ve already learnt. Although I’m

Your work consists of lots of different elements and details, but they never merge together and perfectly fit in composition. You often use different techniques, so that your posters always transfuse the atmosphere. All these things are suggesting that you have a

fussed! I simply threw some release images together and made the models freely available for use. Figured they could serve better use with the SFM community. Incidentally, I have more models I’ve previously commissioned which I’ll be uploading in time, so stay tuned!

“My artwork for a long time now, even back when using Gmod was often blatently suggestive. I enjoy teasing the viewer, but never went into anything that was vulger or lewd. It was only until recently that I shifted gears and jumped into the more erotic side of posing.” designer’s education, do you? Or are you self taught? Thank you very much! No, all self taught. I had some guidance when I started from a few willing users on Facepunch as well. Truth be told I took art in school but failed; my tutors were looking for more abstract artworks and wanted them pumped out regularly. Abstract art is something that I can’t do, or more specifically, don’t want to do. So its somewhat ironic that I’m involved in art now and over time,

21

have gained such a large following! Most of your best arts are very suggestive. How do you manage to create them? ‘Suggestive’ could imply a few meanings, but I will assume that this is a reference to the more ‘adult’ art I’ve been involved in lately. My artwork for a long time now, even back when using Gmod was often blatently suggestive. I enjoy teasing the viewer, but never went into anything that was vulger or lewd. It was only until

recently that I shifted gears and jumped into the more erotic side of posing. If nothing else, its a different avenue to explore down and one that is just as challenging and more importantly, fun to do. Composing them is no different to just working on a regular piece of fanart really, except your naturally tailoring it to a different audience. That is assuming the question was hinting towards any of this! What do you do apart from your artist’s job? You should probably have a profession I do, though its not a career I particularly revel in. I work as a customer assistant at a superstore in the town I reside in. Though my badge says customer assistant, I rarely deal with the general public. This is due to working the night shifts and my store closes at night. Night work isn’t too bad, I’ve been doing it for years so it suits me okay. The job however, is not fulfilling which is a stark contrast to the art I do here for people. In an ideal world I’d love to do artworks for people all the time as

a career, but that reaction should come as no surprise really I suppose! Do you want to say anything to our audience in conclusion? Well if anyone reading this has been following my art on Deviantart or tumblr or anywhere really, thanks for supporting me! Every comment is really encouraging so I appreciate it! Again, I also appreciate being given this interview slot in SourceSTUFF; not often I do something like this so its been quite fun!

Documents: Payback Author Patrick Hunt

It was the June of 2013. Midnight. I was sitting in front of the monitor and tried to imagine an idea for a video, which I can do in SFM. This was time-consuming and full of the wildest absurd as at that time I had a grand creative crisis, which could be retraced among my 2013’s works. Finally, before I gave up, an idea came to my mind: “Let’s make a video about the guy I had a fight with on the Net!” The idea seemed totally absurd. I wanted to exaggerate things I’ve seen on the Net and transform them into a thriller. But when I started doing the video, absurdity flowed into satire and something provocative. And at that time I had no intention to create a series of videos out of this. The concept was simple. Recreate an incident I had on the Net, when some of my friends and I had a strong fight and we were ready to flood up all forums

23

and communities with our anger, and exaggerate that scandal. Then I created the characters, based on those people. Just some simple blank models out of Half-Life 2 citizens. Later I downloaded various skins from garrysmod.org and disassemble them to various “parts”, so I can form the characters of my own. The main antagonist for that nameless chaos was Brian Kim. Obesity, sweaty face, greasy hair and beloved shorts were the components of his incredible success. And the main thing was to recreate all that in SFM frames. Sadly, in 2013 my imagination was working hardly at quarter power. That’s why I did simple reskin of Grigori from Half-Life 2 giving him Male_02 head. Although that wasn’t enough and i put a Male_05 texture on him, as well as increasing it’s resolution and saturation. Head was decorated with

In a few words the plot is: “Patrick Hunt decides to settle the score with his old enemy and tracks him down with the help of his Coordinator Andrew Dugan. Which obviously lead to classic car chase gun fight. Strangers detonate Brain’s car and Patric use that chance to exterminate enemy and went away from police with the coordinator”. a simple hairstyle and glasses, that were imported from Saints Row: The Third. I didn’t had to choose my character’s appearance, cause my ooc has been developing since 2009, frequently changing clothes like some fashion Barbie doll. Then I has chosen ttt_plaza map from Garry’s Mod workshop, modified it in Hammer a bit, as there was lots of stuff, which wouldn’t worked in SFM. Spawn points for various weapons, some portals and other map’s things were brutally cut, barriers were deleted and the lighting was redone. That time I haven’t even dared to think of such a thing as “global lighting”. The map itself and various view angles were doing most of the work, hiding the lack of shadows. After loading a map in SFM, I started to imagine the plot, which I was writing down in my notebook. In a few hours I invented itinerary, prehistory, characters’ positions and some dialogues, which were modified later. Laziness is the progress’ power. So instead of a large-scale introduction in the Source Filmmaker, which foreshadowed the development of a whole new square on a ttt_plaza, I had to jump into Abobe After Effects and schematically depict images from the satellite system. It was some sort of a non-budgetary version of Watch_

Dogs. Shots smoothly transist into SFM animation, and the story continued. And we’re keeping watch over my character running through the crowd. At that time I didn’t have enough experience of work with SFM, so the crowd was unvaried. Every second person was using the same movements as the previous one. And the route was made that I wouldn’t animated pushing people aside. Some animations were filmed trough using Kinect system. They are the fight

24

It was some sort of a non-budgetary version of Watch_Dogs. with policemen and the final speech. Everything else was found among free online libraries, postponed to the characters skeletons, calibrated and taken to the stage. Unfortunately, the world hadn’t seen this video. This had been planned at the time, when I would get three thousand subscribers on my channel (it needed about six hundred people). But the statistics said 70% of them were spambots. And maintaining my channel has become problematic after some events.. The video was ready, but I delayed the release for indefinite time. And finally, I forgot of it. I titled the film in a laconic way: “3k” (“Three thousand”). Some time later, in 2014, I wanted to remake this video changing conception and increasing action at frame. Watching my craft again, I felt unpleasant. There were cut animations, noticeable mistakes, weak sound and another person’s music. I’ve taken roadway instead of a square and done Prague’s rebels instead of spiritless reskins of the citizens. The model of Bryan has been remade again. Instead of 25

Gregori’s body I took model of some fat guy wearing shorts from garrysmod.org. And once again I have been working for hours with textures, increasing resolution and getting other stuff done. In summary, the new plot looked like: “Bryan’s escort limousine was moving in posh streets of the city N, when the crushed van appeared in the way. Security tried to deal with the problem: it was resolved with a two holes in their heads, machine-gun fire on the front car and dealing with the rest of security. A massive firefight ends with the country’s engagement of special forces, and the further pursuit of Brian, during which he was killed, and Hunt’s team valiantly hiding from the crime scene.» However, “what was beautiful on the paper, later crashed like a skyscraper”. Pretty much a new movie was animated under the name “Payback”. Outline of the soundtrack was written and even a few antagonists’ phrases were voiced. The problem showed up quietly. Choreography of a fight in a public

implies an impressive sniping or rambo style action. I’ve chosen the second path, which is automatically cut any opportunity for me to introduce new characters in realistic way. A heavily armored man and the driver of the crashed van were on the stage. They went ahead against rescue security, using heavy machine gun and the stock shotgun. At this point it was hard to introduce anyone but a sniper. He began to extinguish the candles in the crowd on the roof of the opposite house. While whistling bullets were flying over his head, Brian floundered in his luxurious limousine covering his head from the broken glass. That’s it. The show won’t happen. The motivation ran out. At the culminating moment I lost motivation and faith in the project.

Realizing that pulling this mess of plot holes was mildly difficult, I had to freeze the project until better times. 2015 came in. My channel moved because of my desire to start all over again. Along with the new channel, new ideas started to come into my head. I wanted to completely redo what I started in 2013. I decided to re-create the movie named «3k», using all the knowledge and experience in cinematics i obtained in over two years. I chose a time and started to delve into material, outlining details for my movie again. I redid the models which were supposed to be in, digged up source files of ttt_plaza and completely changed the lighting. The plot remained the same, with minor changes only. «Running and shooting guys.» Now this joke from a far 2012 has become

If my creation used of this movie failed when three security the classical methods of shooting and guards ran into protagonists face and all the whole plot didn’t made much sense, just die from a bullet instead of attacking. then there wouldn’t be anything wrong However, such thing was in some with constant facepalms and shouts, action movies before. After a strenuous speech accompanied by intense music, with a cynical joke about laziness, the protagonist goes into the car of the «revived» metro station and leaves the antagonist to suffer from injuries received. Curtain. No, not yet. Now all you need is to process, add titles, make the sound and

The voice acting was done at the planning stage, so it was easier to animate faces and gestures and we can only sync it at the stage of sound design. New video was named “Documents: the Reckoning” and it was agreed that this will be the first episode of the trilogy, “Documents”, which tells the story of my character, decided to deal with his old contacts.

It is impossible to create a perfect product that will appeal to everyone. Therefore, after the release of this movie, there were comments about many aspects, from the animation and ending with a Russian accent of a Russian protagonist with a foreign name. However, any criticism is useful, of course, if it’s objective. Yes, it was my mistake to jump right into the plot of action instead of adequately introduce the characters and explain the essence of the conflict, the strange pronunciation of the protagonist, who is the operator Dugan, and what kind of snipers sat on the roof and in the house. But I chose this method ragged narration, and all I have to do is only to hope that the viewer will adequately perceive “the story backwards and from the middle.

Saxxy 2015 Quick overview on the applicants

30

Secret Lives (SAXXY 2015 Edition) by FlyToRainbowRay Once we already have seen this movie. Then it pleased the relatively good animation and an interesting story. However, before he has sent the video to Saxxy, the author wanted to put it in the department «finalization». Only when the time of the competition has came, we haven’t seen any improvements as well. As a result, we have what we have. The story is simple, but clearly is not finished, and meant a relatively slow animation does not fit into the five-minute running time. The animation is good animation, but the rides as much. Somewhere everything looks good, and somewhere need a strong improvement. With lighting fared almost as well, but in general it doesn’t cause any complaints. A fun idea and a couple of funny jokes help this video go to the section «Comedy.»

31

A Dangerous Photoshoot [Saxxy 2015] by Callegos-Y One of the few representatives of the original universes. Beautiful animation, well-chosen models of the characters and operation of the engine Source 2 strongly distinguish this creature from the gray mass of rollers on Team Fortress 2. Due to its location, taken from the game Dota 2, the characters have a nice contrast with the outside world and thus focus all the attention on themselves. The only thing that can cause resentment – voice. Just one spoken phrase sounds incredibly monotonous and makes us feel complete indifference about the voice actress.

32

Dota 2 - Together We Stand [Saxxy 2015 SFM] by NoxStudio Videos about DotA haven’t caused strong emotions for a long time already and only a few are able to stick in the memory. This video definitely hit in this isolated case. The plot revolves around the eternal struggle between light and darkness, and it’s not finding itself. The beauty of this work is directly performed. A unique visual component makes the video incredibly entertaining and intense. It is worth noting an interesting study of the backgrounds and extras. In General, we would have written something, but it would be enough for one word – epic.

33

[SFM] Alley Brawl - Saxxy 2015) by Patrick Hunt Patrick Hunt has pleased us with a very dynamic video. Chase, kick, another kick, another one, another one a classic fight from the first person in the genre short. It should be noted that a Saxxy for this genre is rare, and, therefore, this is a distinguished video among the others. We see a wonderful and realistic animation, intense and perfectly fitting soundtrack. Moreover, the fight scene, obviously taken out of context and so makes us, the viewers, to demand the continuation from the author. How the destiny of our long-suffering hero will collapse? Will it be a new Hunt’s series? You’ll probably learn about it in the next series.

No Time to Waste - Pirates, Vikings & Knights II (Saxxy 2015) by Ferhod Do you know how to impress the audience if not a single character is animated yet? No? The author of this video knew and took advantage of the moment. Great posing combined with the facial expressions make something really beautiful and fun out of this frozen orgy of violence. A licensed classical composition is chocolate chips in this ice cream cake.

35

Artificial Feelings (Saxxy 2015 Extended) by Ardy The topic of the existence of feelings in artificial intelligence rose in film and literature an infinite number of times and has evolved in many different directions: from the awareness of a machine’s meaninglessness of existence to the destruction of mankind. The author of this work tells the story about a robot who escapes from a factory for processing broken human beings and faces are really artificial feelings. However, the accompanied soundtrack is very annoying by making the mood swings that are a bit off-putting from the message.

36

[SFM] Much Ado About Saxxies (2015 Saxxy Extended) by SamSpielberg Anyone who has ever thought about participating in the Saxxy contest, met the problem of lack of ideas. The main character of this movie also faced this. Epic action? Corny. Black-and-white drama? Boring. What if... no, No, we will not reveal the intent. Suffice to say that the animation of this movie is very good, and appropriate music is written perfectly. As for the plot, it flowed moderately and not with the feet in the face, though, sometimes it’s trash‌

37

A Spark Of Life [Saxxy Awards 2015] by cookbeforewatching There are a lot of commercials and movies in which 2D animation and footage work together. This is what we observe while watching “A SparkOfLife. The idea is implemented with a method of adding a drawn character in a 3D world. All of this is accompanied by beautifully executed animations in SFM and a drawn spark.

38

Rise and Shine [Saxxy Awards 2015] by Kostamoinen There’s a really good idea made in this video. But it failed to implement itself fully in terms of animation and in the composition in general. The sound brings great disappointment, as they throw us sliced or ridiculous or absolutely non-existing phrases.

39

It’s Play Time [Saxxy 2015 Extended] by SFMTales Who sent children to fight? Miss Pauling of course. And she was right in her choice! These children will handicap even the most dangerous platoon of heavily armed thugs. Very beautiful and harmonious colors and the animations are close to Valve style. Another enjoyable aspect is excellent and cohesive plot. The picture looks fine in general, and I would like to see similar full movies. And yet – one thing at a time.

40

Mechanical Mishap [Saxxy 2015 - Extended] by Andy Thybo It’s quite difficult now to make users genuinely laugh when watching comedies and online videos. You can find many videos that use the idea of the spy disguise as inanimate objects, but this is the first movie in which this plan fully develops. Gorgeous animation, gorgeous lighting combined with the music make this video a great nominee in the category “Comedy”.

41

Micro-Mann (Saxxy Awards 2015) by The Winglet We have not seen the movie «Ant-Man», but we almost understand the concept: shrinking a man and increasing his power. The Engineer shrinks the Spy, and he goes for the intelligence, dealing with the team along the way. Animation Valve’s level and similar musical accompaniment, and an interesting setting make this Comedy movie a great action movie.

42

Turbulence [Saxxy Awards 2015] by Dunkle Arrived at the end of the deadline for entries, the movie tells us about the confrontation... of airplanes! The author of this work managed to create unobtrusive story and to present characters in a whole new light. A great achievement of the Director is also constructing whole conversations using phrases from Team Fortress 2 and several additional recorded authentic copycats. Gorgeous animation, excellent staging and good humor. No more words, because you have to see it with your own eyes.

43

Dead 4 Life [Saxxy Awards 2015 - Short Category] by Goobermensch If “Left 4 Dead was in Detroit, it would look like this. Gangs, low-riders, basketball games while listening music - even after the death, real child of the harsh streets will continue to do their gang-things. This movie takes it by dark, like the streets of Northern Chertanovo, Moscow, at midnight. Rich atmosphere and good production. However, the author did not finish his creation, so in some places problems with the animations are noticeable, which is strongly distinguished from all those that were taken from the game.

SFM for newbies Answers for common questions Author: SFM_RU

How to adjust Depth of Field (DoF)? Cameras in SFM have FocalDistance and Aperture settings. Create an Animation Set of the camera in order to make these settings visible. Click the ‘arrow to down’ icon near the camera button (where you toggle between cameras) and choose Create Animation Set. If you want to see the current DoF settings in a viewport, turn on Progressive Refinement in render settings (Click Right Mouse button on the viewport) and open Clip Editor. Aperture — adjusts blur strength. If you set it to 0, blur will be soft (absent?), and if you set it to 1 – will be rather intense. Play with it a little to be acquainted with this slider. Focal Distance — distance, at which objects will be clearly seen. It looks like a rectangle if you look at it with a work camera. Place this Focal Plane at the centre of the object in order to focus on it. For convenience you can make FocalPlane visible all the time – click right mouse button at the viewport → Display → Show Focal Plane

UFO Fashion SourceSTUFF redaction made a little interactive for our readers. And SFM_RU group members made amazing UFO spies outfits after “Invasion update”. In this interactive people had to choose clothes for spy with “Graylien” hat, and dont forget to choose successful background. But there were too much good works, so we could choose three best of the best works. So this time we will see all works, that were in our interactive. Hope next time SPUF and Facepunch members will join us aswell.

49

Author - Yaroslav Gordienko On the picture we can see a wonderful fourarmed spy who is ready to conquer our land, starting from the cemetery, of course.

50

Author - Sergey Myasnikov The landing in Chelyabinsk took place as well, as in the Chelyabinsk meteorite. Luckily, this spy has warm clothes and he won’t freeze to death.

51

Author - Danil Gromenko What if the spies came to save us from the zombie infection? The author of this work provided us zombie-version.

Author - Pavel Opyshkin Distracted from eating baguettes and frog legs, spy decided to destroy everyone who lives in Paris. Excellent and elegant suit attached to this wonderful villain.

52

Author - Bogdan Skitenko That engineer should should’ve stayed out of places he wasn’t invited in. Maybe It could have ended differently, if he did not dig up on that spy for so long...

Author - Vlad Koltakov Mexican spy, probably, is going to take his property, which is in the custody of the US authorities in the area 51. In the background it is clear that it has all turned out as planned

53

Author - Ivan Nekhoroshkov Until some spies killing everybody who saw them, this spy disguised as humans, and quite successfully.

54

Author - Mikhael Ushakov Who knows what misdeed started spy, and only Gabe knows why he has this remote controller...

55

Author - Ivan Nekhoroshkov ÂŤDo you want to buy a pet?Âť This question is now concerned spy who try to sell a pup slug to strangers.

Author - Bogdan Bosenko Because of a small mistake, UFO-spy was in a wrong place. All is noticed this mistake, except himself.

56

57

Author - Nikolay Morozov Not everyone can perfectly hit it off society. For example, our spy. Alas, he fell into the hands of the enemy and it definitely bode ill.

58

Halloween Things we’d want to see in the game.

First thing in our little review is VoodooSpy by Sky. Sadly, this awesome cosmetic didn’t get in the game. Description by author: “I got Voodoo, I got Hoodoo, I got things I ain’t even tried! Revamped and reuploaded version of our «Shadow Sleeper» set from last year, with a new hat, snazzier coat and (hopefully) no material problems.” In the description of this cosmetics we can see reference to Disney cartoon “The Princess and the Frog”. Reference are words from Voodoo-man song – Ya’ Got what you wanted I got friends on the other side...

59

Good, bad. I’m the guy with the gun Hail to the king, baby! Next cosmetic set is made by Constructor. This is Ash-Engineer. I guess, that our readers already noticed reference to “Evil Dead”. In this set we can see hand-gun like minigun, that can theoriticaly provide new gameplay elements to this class. Sad, but we haven’t got any of this. Description: “When a handgun just won’t do the trick, an armgun is what you need. (Firing this beaut for twelve seconds costs an arm and a leg.)”

60

Good bonk remaking by maniac™ Item Description: Drink to become invulnerable and spooky for 8 seconds. Scare the hell out of everybody just like Zepheniah does. Cannot attack during this time. If one day this item was added into the game, it is unlikely that anyone would question its origins. Attention to even slightest details, coupled with retaining the overall performance style, it can easily mislead almost anyone. But no, it’s not an official thing. Just a surprisingly well-made and remodeled item that will never hit the green light.

61

I am a hunter. A weapon. It’s what I do. It’s in my blood… Next on our list - a black vampire slayer set created by Colteh. If our hot black Scottish cyclops can be dressed up in a medieval armor, then i see no problem with a power one. It’s hardly a good addition to existing cosmetics items and doesn’t synergise with anything very well, but the whole set itself is a one hell of a masterpiece.

62

The Strange Case of Dr. Wolfenmann Half naked medic man created by Svdl. Description: All-around medical mystery. And the ladies love a little mystery. Doctors. At the end, it’s only for them to decide the fate of the world. Be it a total genocide or overall salvation. But even they sometimes want to escape from a global science and awaken their inner beast, tearing to shreds anyone who got in their way. Also, the subject is an excellent demonstration of how terrifying a man can be without a shirt.

63

And now, we want to bring your attention to a very original idea by CoBalt. A Sock-Head. Despite many crazy head replacements our pyromaniac have (such as lightbulb or a candle), this one looks really refreshing. But, like many others’ great ideas, it probably will never be implemented. After all, a flammable head is probably not the most successful

venture. Description: The return of a friend. - 2 LODs - Paintable - Improved model - Improved Texture - Even friendlier than before.

64

And it’s a toe! A very terrifying toe. And not just a regular one. This one grows inside of your very own neck. Well, at least now you have an opportunity to polish and manicure a giant nail. While the rest of mercenaries joyfully running around, waving their tutu, tarsus and bulgy brains, the only thing a soldier can show is his zipperface, which is kinda

65

horrifying on it’s own, but doesn’t look that special compared to other classes outfits. But it is time for a change. Suprisingly scary halloween item made by Spine-Chillin’ Psyke, Merczy и perrryz.

The last on our list, and quite scare as well - a heavy clown (it looks scarier than it sounds) made by donhonk, SpineChillin’ Psyke, Zwappa, Ryan. When you’re a clown. Nobody takes you seriously.

Авторы: - Zwappa: Concept/Promo - Rain: Model/Textures - Psyke: Textures - Donhonk: Flexes

Despite the ever-lasting tradition, the current Scream Fortress event passed without much fuss (stir). For once, the Halloween update has brought absolutely no gameplay changes whatsoever and even left us without hundreds of mind breaking (or just bizarre by design) cosmetic items. This stems from the developers increased attention to more important things, such as “Gun Mettle Update”, implementing the matchmaking system, second contract campaign promised to be released at the end of this year, and perhaps even the not-so-secret “Spy vs Engie Update”. There’s simply no way to work on something else in between. 69

Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide is now available on Steam. This is interesting coop with lots of positive reviews.

Named to be the game of the year, Fallout 4 was waiting for not the friendliest welcome, due to a pair of critical defects and changes in the gameplay. However, it didn’t stop it to become a sales leader in digital stores on all available platforms and take third place on the list of the three most popular games on Steam, even managing for a short period of time to push over cybersport Titans from Valve. Also, 12 million physical copies of game were sent all around the world, which is approximately 60% of the total sold Skyrim copies over three years of its existence. Of course this does

not mean that all of them will be sold, but the game is definitely originated unprecedented demand, as evidenced by the drop in PornHub traffic by 10%. “We’re extremely proud of Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, and his experienced team of developers for their talent and dedication in creating this extraordinary game,” said Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks. “Fallout 4 is a masterpiece in game development and storytelling, providing fans hundreds of hours of fun as they explore and are challenged by this fascinating, beautifully crafted world.” 70
