After successfully staging the first Wedding Spectacular in February 2012, our biggest challenge was how to improve the event for patrons and exhibitors. For the inaugural staging, we invited international designer and Bride Magazine's Best Dress winner Nandi Chin to the island and gave away a US$5000 couture gown. We brought Trash the Dress to Kingston, and invited Black Entertainment Television (BET) featured photographer Marcia. E. Roberts to do a live demonstration at the Wyndham pool. For Wedding Spectacular 2013, we chose to meet with our exhibitors and patrons; and sat with real married couples to gain insight into what was needed to improve the event experience. This year, we will be introducing fashion shows and main stage seminars. We decided to introduce consumerism, encouraging a market place that allows for buying and selling. We increased the number of giveaways, and gave each day a theme that promoted different activities. We anticipate that these changes will make for a better experience for both our patrons and exhibitors. Thank you for making it Wedding Spectacular! See you next at Kingston Bridal Week, September 2013. INTUIT Concepts Event Management & Execution Intuitconcepts@gmail.com 876.278-6807

Wedding Dress Styles: What you need to know The style of your dress is the single most important factor in creating your overall look on your wedding day. Wedding dresses can range from sleek and simple to grand and elaborate, depending on your personal taste and the statement you want to make on your big day. The silhouette of your wedding dress is the first image that your groom will see when you begin your walk down the aisle, and you want to make sure that your first impression is a memorable one. There are primarily 5 shapes/styles of wedding dresses: A-line, Empire, Mermaid, Ball Gown, and Sheath. The A-line silhouette is a more traditional shape and suits most body types. It will usually hug your upper body, then begin to flair off a little bit below your natural waist into an A like shape. The empire silhouette has a higher waistline that starts under the bust line; this is a great shape for the mommy-to-be bride. The Mermaid shaped gown is the sexier of the styles and is definitely the most popular style now. It is the perfect shape for the lady who is proud of her curves and wants to show them off on her big day. This shape will hug the waistline thorough to the hips and flair of slightly above the knee.

The ball gown shape is the very traditional princess looks with the large skirt and lots of volume. This shape is perfect for the bride that wants to feel like a princess on her wedding day. And finally the sheath gown. This gown will usually be floor length, will fit snugly and most often flow softly away from the knee or mid-calf. This shape is for that tall and slender bride who is looking for comfort and sexy on her day. A sheath gown will usually be made of silk, chiffon or charmeuse fabric. By walking into a bridal store with a clear idea of what you want, you will be saving yourself a lot of headache. However, there is no golden rule in wedding dress designs, and you owe it to yourself, and your future husband, to be adventurous when trying on gowns. You will never know what you look like in certain styles if you never try them on. Who knows, the style you think would look the worst on your body type might just be the one you end up choosing. Are you sure you want to

DIY? One of the biggest decisions a couple can make is how to plan their wedding: DIY (do-it-yourself) or hire a wedding planner? No one needs a wedding planner, but in certain cases the service makes very good sense. DIY brides are determined to save money by taking on much of the work themselves. Although these brides save money, they do not save themselves on stress; executing all aspects of the wedding takes time, attention to detail, and patience. Yes‌ hiring a Wedding Planner, is an added expense, though wedding planners add to your wedding costs, they save you time and stress. You don’t want to pass on the heavy burden to friends, relatives -- or yourselves. While your wedding is as important to them as it is to you, they may not be able to afford spending many dozens of hours on wedding-related projects.

18

The most practical approach for a DIY is to only take on projects that can be finished well ahead of time. Consider handing over the heavy lifting to a fullservice wedding planner that will ease your workload and save you money. Don’t take on unnecessary stress! Our best advice: Do only what you can afford in terms of both money AND time. Shikima Hinds Island Bride Jamaica “Jamaica’s Destination Wedding Specialist”

Bridal Skin Care and Makeup Congratulations, you are getting married! This is such an exciting time in your life. You have been picturing yourself on the day, when the doors to the chapel open and you are a picture of perfection as you walk towards your future husband. To guarantee a healthy radiant skin and that elegant glow on your special day, you must prepare. We highly recommend that six months prior to the big day, you meet with a Skin Care Specialist who will advise you on the best treatment(s) for your skin. Schedule your monthly appointments. Skin treatments should focus on, deep cleansing and exfoliation to purge skin of impurities. Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse is a must for your daily routine as it efficiently lifts make-up, oil and debris from the skin. Your daily pre-cleanse should be followed by a prescribed Dermalogica Cleanser. You are the bride; everyone has come to see you! Your makeup should be timeless and flawless. Do not wait at last minute to book your makeup artist and ensure that you consult as early as six months prior to your wedding day. This gives you ample time to do research, trials and find the right person for the job. Some Makeup Artists are also Skin Care Specialist which will allow you to save on cost with the added benefit of working with one person who knows your skin. TIP Planning Ahead Spend time talking to your baker and looking through their wedding cakes album. Look at several cake designs then choose the one that best defines your style; or be adventurous and combine styles from different cakes into one cake. Ultimately, whatever design you choose – the tradition of sharing love, life, fertility and prosperity continues when you share your wedding cake with your guests. 32

INCLUDE THE KIDS When you get married, you are blending your entire lives, including your assets, family, friends and possibly 1.25 kids from a previous relationship. Traditionally, younger children participate in the wedding by being the flower girl or ring bearer. Increasingly the trend is towards older/teenaged children participating in the bridal party as Brides Maids or Groomsmen. One more way to include your children in your ceremony, is to have them participate in the symbolic blending of your families. For example, if you plan to do a sand ceremony, you may include different colored sand for the children to pour; or if you plan to do a unity candle, consider having your children light the individual candles or assist with lighting the center candle. Remember; if you have children, it may not be a great idea to have a ‘no kids allowed’ policy for your wedding. If children are isolated, they will become uncomfortable and require more attention. It is better to have other children around and create a space just for them: have a kids table with coloring sheets and other activities to keep them occupied. You may also consider using one of the companies that provide on-site nanny services for events. Charlene Chevannes-Chambers Š2013, NC3 Events Photo: Male Attire provided by Spokes Apparel

PRE-LIGHTING CANDLES If you’re going to use candles in your wedding ceremony and reception decorations, be sure to light them once before the wedding to break them in. Many a bride and groom have had trouble lighting candles that were brand new. 43

adpiece Bird Cage He

DIY A bird cage headpiece is made from netting and attached to clips, combs, headbands or delicate hats. The head piece is a great alternative to a fussy veil, and can also be used to play up the vintage vibe of a decade's dress or theme. Bird cage headpieces are simple to construct and require minimal crafting supplies and expertise.

are facing away from each other. There should be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of netting excess gathered on the underside of the comb. Apply hot glue to the underside bridge of the comb using the glue gun. Adhere the netting excess to the glued underside bridge of the comb. Let it dry completely. Slip the comb into the hair on one side of the head to place the bird cage headpiece. Manipulate the netting with your fingers to create desired look.

Cut a semicircle from the netting. The 4. straight edge of the semicircle will be gathered to give the headpiece a curved 3-D shape. A semicircle with a 10-inch straight edge will cover just one side of the face, so adjust sizing 5. accordingly for a more dramatic look. Gather the straight edge of the semicircle to give the piece some volume, matching the length of the gathered. Trash the Dress “Trash the Dress” or, “rock the frock” as it is known in some circles, is a style of wedding photography that abandons the expected elegance and preservation of the dress. Such photography often takes place at a beach or pool, but is by no means restricted to water, as other locations have become trendy such as streets, fields and even auto shops. The bride often wears her wedding dress and may effectively ruin it by getting it wet or dirty, and in some extreme cases the dress may be totally destroyed. Grooms are not usually excluded from the Trash the Dress event, in fact his presence adds the special element required for amazing shots, great stories and memories. It is claimed that Trash the Dress photography was first made popular in 2001 by Las Vegas’ Michael Cooper. Marcia E. Roberts, of JamaicaNphotography.com is known for her Trash the Dress shoots on the North Coast. Marcia, who has been featured on BET Networks, through Caribbean lifestyle series Splash, will be doing a special Trash the Dress Wedding Feature at Wedding Spectacular at the Wyndham Kingston poolside. INTERVIEWING YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER Asking questions is an important part of selecting a wedding photographer, and a way to ensure that the type of wedding pictures you want will be captured on your special day. Whether dealing with vendors, individual photographers or venues, ask to see albums of their wedding photography and request references from past clients.
