NOTE

"To dream anything that you want to dream, that’s the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do, that’s the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits, that is the courage to succeed." ~ Bernard Edmonds

T

his quote by Bernard Edmonds is one of my all-time favourites. As I reflect on the journey of this publication and our achievements to date, it’s always a feeling of pride, the joy of great achievement, the vision of what’s possible, to be the best we can be, to dream, to do, to trust ourselves and test our limits that propels us to do greater things.

It’s certainly not hard to grasp why we are an extraordinary publication. We have become the brides-to-be, wedding vendors’ and wedding enthusiasts’ resource guide to informative and relevant articles and listings of some of Jamaica’s most professional wedding vendors. We are grateful for the release of another issue. We acknowledge your feedback and thank you for your overwhelming support. We invite you to continue on the journey with us… it really gets better from here on. We have upped the ante and are bringing you more articles to assist you along your journey – “to I do and beyond’ In this issue, we share tips on destination wedding; wedding dress shopping; knowing your husband; raising step-children; investing wisely and much more. We explored Jamaica and picked 10 fun attractions to visit while on vacation. Be sure to try the DIY projects and the healthy recipes included and let us know how well they worked for you. Get social with us and send pictures of your version or take on our suggestions. As always we encourage you to refer WE Magazine to a friend, talk about us and give us your feedback. So as you ‘flip’ through these pages we hope you will find WE Magazine extremely useful and the next event you plan will be ‘with ease.’ One love! xoxo

Readers' Views The magazine is amazing, it serves as a wedding map for couples. I love the magazine's detailed layout and the article on “Merging your Money in Marriage.” Finance is a major part of this journey and 'WE' surely made it easier with those tips. "I honestly learn so much from your Facebook page on a daily basis. Keep up the awesome job!" NAS HALL LEWIS

"The article on 'Wedding Themes' was my favourite. Many persons may not recognise how helpful selecting a theme for their special day can be. It sure helped my wife and I with the planning and execution of our wedding. Kudos to the 'WE' Team in their efforts to help persons understand the importance of proper planning. This will not only save them time and money but also any unnecessary 'disagreements'."

KERRYANN THOMAS

The article on “Managing the in-laws” was an interesting read. Every couple should read this article. The tips given are concise and extremely helpful as it highlights the type of relationship you want to develop with your in-laws. Even unmarried couples should give it a read." MATTHEW SIMMONDS

KORY SOLOMON Send your comments, suggestions and questions to: contact@witheasemagazineja.com

"What I liked most about the last issue is the topic 'Building your Future as a Couple.' The article highlighted issues such as controlling your spending, understanding your money habits and budgeting. This article has certainly taught my partner and I how to manage our finances.”

E

very bride wants her wedding to be one-of-akind. Having a wedding at a fabulous resort is one way to make your event more memorable and this is becoming more and more popular with couples planning a wedding.

A wedding is a wonderful celebration that brings family and friends together. These days, however, weddings often require travel for many of the guests because people are spread out across the country. If many guests have long distances to travel to begin with, why not choose an exotic location and turn your wedding into a more memorable event for everyone? Location, Location, Location Choosing the right place for your wedding should be first on your ‘to do’ list. This day should be perfect from start to finish - that is why finding the right place should be first on your 'to do' list. The place where you and your fiancée will exchange vows will set the mood for your whole wedding celebration. Whether you choose to have your first kiss as a married couple on the beach, or dancing in a ballroom like Cinderella, there are many beautiful locations here in Jamaica to choose for a destination wedding. One of the drawbacks of a destination wedding is the expense of flights and the added expense of accommodations that guests would need to pay for. Keep in mind that many of your guests may decide not to attend based on these factors. If you have problems with a guest list that is getting out of control, a destination wedding may be the answer to your problems. According to one recent survey of brides, more than 20% of couples planning a wedding are choosing a destination wedding. One reason destination wedding has become so popular is that combining your wedding and honeymoon can save money. Destination weddings may also cost less per guest than having your wedding in an elegant ballroom. Be sure to ask about complete wedding packages which are offered by many of the big resorts.

Tip: Send invitations early so your guests will have enough time to make travel plans

f possible, hire a wedding coordinator at your location (check references) and visit if possible beforehand. You would also want to choose a location that photographs well and shows off the beauty of the location or the look and feel you are going for.

Before you go, be sure to check on the local marriage license laws and any paperwork you will need to bring - visa, birth certificate etc. If you are getting married outside on the beach, have a back-up plan if the weather is not cooperating.

Tip - Keep in mind other costs such as hotel taxes and/or exchange rates for the country you are visiting.

Most brides choose an informal style wedding dress for destination weddings because they are easier to pack and wear. Many designers are offering bridal gowns made from light, easy to wear fabric like chiffon and silk crêpe that are perfect for an island wedding. Ask your local bridal salon for additional ideas and get suggestons on how to pack your gown for travel. Many of the resorts may have ironing services or they may be able to recommend a pressing service. The Groom's Attire For the groom, a popular option is the all-ivory or all-white tuxedo. Some of today's hottest tuxedo styles are designed in non-traditional styles and shades or you could ditch the tux and go for something more casual and comfortable. Whichever location you choose for your wedding, remember to take time to enjoy the day!

10 FUN

ATTRACTIONS TO VISIT WHILE ON VACAY

SOMERSET FALLS

1

RIO GRANDE

Serenity and relaxation are two words that come to mind when one thinks of rafting on the Rio Grande. When in Jamaica it’s an experience not to be missed. Located in Portland the “cradle” of tourism with its lush vegetation and rain forest, the Rio Grande originates in the Blue Mountains where the air is fresh and clean. Hop on to a hand-made bamboo raft at Berrydale and meander down eight miles of therapeutic waters and scenery. Look out for the birds which call the banks of the Rio Grande home, they’ll call out to you. Stop at “Jumbie Crossing” and for those in love kiss and make a wish when you get to “Lovers Lane.” It is said your wish will come true. When you get to the “big rock” the adventurous can take the opportunity to dive in for a swim in the cool clear waters. Unwind and release the cares of the day. Delve into a tradition that the villagers say was started over a hundred years ago and was made popular by actor Errol Flynn who enjoyed this getaway as many times as seven days per week. Catch a glimpse of the kaleidoscope of life in the valley and allow trained rafts-men to skillfully take you down to the Caribbean Sea which awaits you with open arms. And remember you can be as creative as you want to be.

Between Hope Bay and Port Antonio, Somerset Falls sits behind a hedge of bright red ginger lilies and green bottlebrush plants. Once an old sugar plantation that extended from the mountains to the sea, today Somerset is a 97-acre property with a breathtaking garden, complete with ponds and waterfalls. Overflowing with crotons, bamboos, ferns, cocoa plants, indigo and moss-covered trees (to name only a few), the garden grows on the banks of the Daniel River. A concrete path leads up the gurgling river to the back of the property. Along the way, small waterfalls trickle down the bushy hillsides and shady benches, where visitors enjoy a moment of tranquillity. The path ends at a deep river pond that entices you to take a plunge into its invigorating clear, turquoise water. There, a guide is waiting to take you on a rowboat ride through a narrow tributary, encircled by limestone caverns to the spectacular main attraction - the "Hidden Falls." Here, you can cool off in the 20-foot-deep pool or snap away at the falls. Some advice for photographers: to best capture this cascading shower and luminous pool, turn off your flash. You won’t be disappointed!

PAINTBALL JAMACA

Nestled in the heart of the Jamaican parish of Trelawny, home of world-famous athlete Usain Bolt, Paintball Jamaica offers an exhilarating escape to paintball enthusiasts and the adventurous at heart. Two paintball fields surrounded by Jamaican countryside offer an exciting but not too difficult challenge to visitors who come from local towns and cities as well as from the nearby resorts on the coast. Paintball Jamaica meets all the established standards of the best paintball facilities around the world when it comes to the gear and equipment provided as well as safety. The game which involves players tagging each other with markers that fire gels (paintballs) consisting of a dye has seen remarkable success particularly among families seeking a few hours of good competitive fun. Another surprising use of the game has been for bachelor party activities before weddings by both local gentlemen and those staying at hotels on the island. Snacks and beverages are available on the property and those who come with friends but choose not to play can relax on park benches with tables while the kids have a tiny playground as well as a target shooting area. It's an adventurous setting which contrasts with the tranquil, breezy, green environment of the surrounding area and this allows guests to enjoy both the activities as well as a truly authentic Jamaican countryside experience. It’s well worth a trip by any visitor and its central location on the north coast makes it easily accessible. Thrill Level WWW.WITHEASEMAGAZINEJA.COM 23 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

DOLPHIN COVE

Dolphin Cove, the Caribbean’s #1 attraction with three locations in Jamaica, is home to beautiful bottlenose dolphins that play happily in their natural lagoon in the Caribbean Sea. Visitors to the parks are given the experience of a lifetime by participating in thrilling programmes with these wonderful mammals. In 2012, Dolphin Cove introduced the Dolphin Trek experience. Participants walk underwater while surrounded by dolphins in this unique interaction. Additionally, guests are afforded the opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of other creatures from the deep such as stingrays and sharks. The magnificent Ocho Rios property has a natural cove which is surrounded by five acres of lush tropical rain forest. Visitors there have the opportunity to interact with exotic land-based animals. Guests can feed the lovebirds from the palm of their hands as well as hold a variety of macaws and parrots. A visit to the iguana and snakes completes the tour of the Jungle Trail. Mini boat rides and glass-bottom kayaking are also included in your admission to the park and add to your day of adventure and excitement. At Dolphin Cove Negril, located in Lucea, Hanover, guests can also enjoy the same amazing interactive sessions with the dolphins. In addition, guests are able to pet and interact with the stingrays and watch the hilarious Shark Show. The surprise for many will undoubtedly be the camels. Petting these wonderful animals is a part of the package and riding is available at an additional cost. Dolphin Cove provides an awesome experience which will definitely make memories for a lifetime.

GREEN GROTTO

7

Ideally located on Jamaica’s scenic North Coast, Green Grotto Caves are linked to the island’s history and area major natural attraction for both local visitors and tourists who crave adventure.

Green Grotto Caves are said to have provided shelter for Jamaica’s first inhabitants, the Tainos, a haven for ‘runaway slaves’ in the 18th Century and were sought after as a hideout by the Spanish during the takeover of the island by the English in 1655. Between the two World Wars, the caves were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba and in more recent

times, sections of the Caves were used as a rum storehouse. A tour of the Green Grotto Caves will take you on an out of this world journey into the very heart of Jamaica’s “innerworld”. In just under an hour, your guide will take you through a maze of sturdy, majestic stalactites and stalagmites, and other exquisite dripstone formations. Continue through the interconnected passageways and chambers, some 37 metres down to the cave’s innermost cavern, where you will come upon the grotto – with water as translucent as nothing you have seen before. On your outward journey of this enchanting tour, stop at the “Wishing Well” and throw a coin – for luck, for love or all your heart desires.

Wedding Dress Shopping Tips by: Sara Stanford, Jamaica

or some brides-to-be, searching for a wedding dress can be utterly thrilling, while for others, it’s an utter nightmare. Regardless of which category you fall into, it is inevitable that you’ll have to shop for a dress. To help make the arduous (and often overblown) process a little easier, we’ve compiled 5 wedding dress shopping tips that every bride should know.

Are you a renter or a buyer - The decision to rent or buy your gown really comes down to 2 factors - Price and Personality

Price -With access to so many wedding sites and magazines it is very easy to get caught up

with all the gorgeous over the top wedding dresses out there. However, most of these dresses usually start at about US$2,000 and can go up as high as US$10,000 or more. It would be helpful to keep in mind that you can get some of the top designer gowns for a quarter of the price if you rent, after all it is only one day-right? Personality - Some brides-to-be cannot even fathom the thought of wearing a gown that has been worn before...and lets be honest, that's okay too. If you are that bride-to-be, then it would be best to set your budget a bit higher to ensure you find exactly what you want. Also when you purchase a gown you will have a lot more options where alterations and customizations are concerned.

Sara Stanford CEO, Bliss Bridal Boutique with client WWW.WITHEASEMAGAZINEJA.COM 27 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

WWW.WITHEASEMAGAZINEJA.COM ■ WE MAGAZINE ■ 27

Don't start too early - We know that shopping for the dress is an exciting time in your life and you can't wait to get started, but we do not want to see you disappointed and heartbroken. Too often women have come to the salon, fallen in love with a dress, even said ‘Yes’, but left without the gown because they either weren't financially ready, or the 'right' people weren't with her. What's the problem you ask? When the 'right' time does come, they discover the dress is no longer available or has been discontinued or sold. This is a recipe for heartbreak. Word to the wise, if you are renting your dress, 4 months before the big day is a good time to get started. If you plan to buy, then 6-8 months will be just fine. Be patient you will be grateful. Do your research - You should have an idea of what you are looking for in a gown. Whether you want something light and flowy because it’s a beach wedding or something a bit fitted that will flatter your shape. The internet is your friend; visit various wedding sites that will give you inspiration and insight into what is trending, what style and silhouette will fit your body type, wedding venue, budget and your personality.

28 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

Skip the entourage - Indeed, we’re aware that many brides consider dress shopping the ultimate time to bond with their mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, BFFs, college roommates, neighbours, colleagues, second cousins, and mother-in-laws, but it comes down to this: Too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup. Between differing tastes, generations, opinions, and levels of knowledge about your personal style, you’ll only end up confused and in desperate need of some painkillers (or a strong cocktail.) Plus, when it comes down to it, the final decision is yours. Instead, we suggest bringing one or two persons who knows you and your style well, who are calm, honest, and modern. Have an open mind - Yes, it’s important to know your own style and not compromise but you might be surprised how good you look and feel in a style, cut, or length you normally wouldn’t have expected. Likewise, dress styles you filled your Pinterest boards with, might look terribly unflattering, so there’s nothing to lose by trying on as many dresses as you can.

C OMMANDMENT S OF

LIPSTICK Rules for a Flawless Pout

Start with clean lips Gently exfoliate any dry skin by lightly rubbing your lips with a damp wash cloth.

Know your formulas Matte can be long-lasting, but may dry your lips out. Creamy formulas are hydrating, but may not last as long, and longwearing formulas are more comfortable than they used to be... Experiment! Wear a lip pencil to intensify a lip colour Lining your lips neutralizes their natural look so the lipstick will be more opaque and closer to the colour in the tube

Apply lipstick with a lip bruch for a lasting effect Take the extra time to apply the lipstick with a brush in the morning or before a night on the town for a lasting effect.

Top with gloss The shine will help make your pout look even plumper. If you dont like the sticky feeling, just use a small drop in the middle of the bottom lip for a similar effect. Dont be afraid to go nude The most flattering nude lipstick is one shade deeper than your skin tone. Fair-skinned ladies should try a hue with a hint of pink and those with olive or dark skin will want to reach for sandy beige. There really is a red for everyone To find the best hue for you, follow these guidelines: Fair skin looks best with a blue-red hue, olive skin is flattered by an orange-red and dark skin looks best with a burgundy red.

Blot the right way Blot in between applications by gently pressing a tissue to your lips. Dont put the tissue in between lips and press down as that will make your lipstick wear off unevenly.

Dont get lipstick on your teeth Put your index finger in your mouth and gently close your lips around it then pull it out. This will take off the lipstick from the inside of your lips so it wont wind up on your teeth.

Enhance your cupid's bow with a dab of highlighter The light reflecting particles will help draw attention to this pretty part of your mouth. You could also use a creamy concealer in the same spot to help define your lips. Source: www.goodhousekeeping.com

The Prenuptial Agreement 'To sign or not to sign' by Jeffrey Broobin , United States

30 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

Y

ou can look at the idea as very cold and unromantic or a considerate and practical way to decide before the marriage certain issues having to do with your money. When you're sitting down to create yours, it's often best to do so with your spouse. Prenups aren't just about protecting yourselves in the unfortunate event you end up separated or divorced; they can also be about deciding whether certain debts are personal or shared, what to do with pre-owned property, and more. It is interesting to note that the custom of creating prenuptial agreements is not the modern invention that it seems to be. During the 19th century, before the Married Women's Property Act of 1848, prenuptial agreements were necessary for women in the United States. Until the Act became law, everything a woman owned or inherited was transferred to her husband. If he died or divorced her, she was just out of luck. Nowadays it is not so uncommon to execute prenuptial agreements and these are not just for the famous rich couples we read about, where one spouse is much richer than the other. These are

couples who want to be upfront about financial issues and get that out of the way before the wedding. A prenuptial agreement is a signed and notarized contract that describes how a couple will handle the financial aspects of their marriage. The prenuptial agreement has many positive benefits that are not related to divorce, and although it is not very romantic, it has many positive elements: § If a future spouse won't sign a prenuptial agreement, it may be best to discover this before the wedding. § The financial well-being of children from a previous marriage can be protected. § Personal and business assets accumulated before the marriage are protected by a prenuptial agreement. § A prenuptial agreement reveals financial expectations before the wedding.

Wedding Rings Should a Man Wear One or Not? by: Peter Cross, United States

35 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

S

trange as it may seem the wearing of a wedding band by a male was not common until recently. Whereas women have worn wedding rings for eons, men have not. The use of rings as a symbol of everlasting love enshrined in marriage can be traced back thousands of years. However, not so much for the men.

Secondly whilst the wearing of jewelry by women is so common as to go unremarked that is not necessarily the case for men. For most men the wearing of a wedding band is just a case of being asked to wear jewelry. Whilst some men see their wedding band as different to wearing ordinary jewelry, others feel just the same as if they were being asked to wear earrings.

In fact, it was during the Second World War that the use of wedding rings by men became more common. It became the custom for US soldiers going to war to publicise their marital status by the wearing of a wedding band. They were happy to make public their commitment to their wife by the wearing of a public symbol that declared that commitment to all. Given that this habit of wearing a wedding band was reasonably new it was all the more creditable that these men were willing to forego the marital obscurity available to them from not wearing a ring and actively chose to make a public statement about their choice.

For those men who have never worn any form of jewelry before may have no idea what it will feel like to have something permanently on their finger. Is it heavy? Does it rub? Silly as it may seem to women this can be of concern for some men.

The male’s wedding band has become increasingly common since that time. Today, it is probably more likely for a married male to wear a ring than not. This may be due to several factors. The modern man may consider it his duty to choose to make the same public marital statement as his wife will. His wife may well consider it a condition of the marriage that he does. After all, in these days of equality, if she is prepared to make a statement then should he not do so as well? Despite the fact that the wearing of a ring by a woman is a matter of choice, it is in fact almost obligatory due to the fact that it is so common. Many women do not even consider the possibility of not wearing one. Often, however, a man usually considers the wearing of a wedding band very carefully. There are a number of issues to consider. Firstly, is he concerned about a public display of his marital status? Some men, whether rightly or wrongly, are threatened by this. Others are not in the least concerned.

36 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

Culture is also a consideration. In many cultures the wearing of wedding bands by men would never be considered. Men must think about how their particular culture, and also their religion, would view the wearing of a wedding band. Ultimately though, the wearing of a wedding band is just one of the many choices the man will have to make once he makes the commitment to marry. It is often a choice made by the couple, maybe one of the first they make together about their wedding. Which finger is the ring worn on, and why? Generally a man’s wedding band is worn on the ‘ring’ finger, the same as for women. The ring finger is the fourth finger of the left hand. This is considered to be the finger closest to the heart. This notion came originally from the ancient Greeks who believed that this finger had an artery which flowed straight to the heart.

Once the couple has made the decision to purchase a

wedding band there are still other choices to make. Do they want to wear a matching set? Or does he prefer that his ring looks quite different to his wife’s. It is perfectly possible for a couple to buy a ring set where the styles of the rings match perfectly, or even with matching engraved messages of love.

Generally, even where the couple is to wear a matching ring set, the two rings are different. It is more common for the man’s wedding ring to be wider than the woman’s. This is because the male and female hands are different. A woman usually has narrower finer fingers, and so a narrower band suits her hand. A man on the other hand has wider chunkier fingers and so a wider man wedding band is more suited. This often results in the man’s ring costing more than the woman’s ring even with matching styles, as the man’s ring uses more, often expensive, material. There are many innovative styles available now. Some men may prefer a simple unadorned band, however others enjoy highly decorated styles which make a loud statement. The wearing of, for example, very wide and highly adorned Celtic rings is becoming much more common. When considering the styles of men’s wedding band it is well worth thinking about the personality of the individual. While different men have very different personalities different rings will suit different personalities as well. There are many different ring materials which also reflect

37 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

the personality of the individual. Titanium or Platinum are both becoming much more popular. Whilst diamonds are not, of course, as popular with men as with women, they do make a clear statement which pleases some men who choose them. But it can be a brave man who chooses to wear a large diamond band. Ultimately, there are no rules about choosing a man's wedding band. It is up to either the man or the couple to make a decision. Will he or won’t he? There are a variety of considerations. Once that decision is made in the affirmative then there is a whole world of choice about styles, widths, materials and the type of statement the ring makes, both for the man and the woman. Take your time when selecting the rings. Remember, long after the tuxedos have been returned and the limo ride has ended, your wedding rings will be with you each moment to remind you of your lasting commitment. Once he has his ring on, it is rare that he decides that he doesn’t like it. Even if he doesn’t, it is rare that the woman will let him take it off!

the more important elements such as compatibility and the components for lasting, romantic love. Three key ingredients in a happy and lasting romantic relationship are intimacy, passion and commitment. Most couples want to have a long-term relationship where the sex is phenomenal. However we often confuse sex with love. There are couples who have amazing sex yet do not experience true love. There are also couples who love each other but do not have great sex. Sex and love are two completely different things. So how do we find out what it takes to make a romantic relationship last during marriage? Intimacy No, intimacy is not sex. For most lay people when we say intimacy we are thinking about sex. Many intimate relationships do not include sex and there are sexual relationships that are not intimate. When two people have a fling they may have sex but do not share the intimate details of their lives. Intimacy really means “into me you see”. It is letting the other person into your private thoughts, ideas and emotions. In some instances one partner is willing to share their ideas while the other one is not. This is sometimes pseudo-intimacy a trained and experienced psychologist will be able to tell the difference between the two. Companions frequently believe they are experiencing deep and abiding romantic love then they add sex, simply because of the strength of the friendship.

M

arriage is a big decision for most couples and can place a great deal of stress on both parties. Even when two people believe they truly love each other, the decision to get married is sometimes full of uncertainty. Is this the right person? Is this the right time? Are we ready? These are questions that we ask ourselves as we pick out the dresses, tuxedos and venue. But the wedding is not the marriage. One vital factor why marriages don’t work is because we choose the wrong person. Sometimes we are so caught up in the physical attraction that we fail to consider 41 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

For example Sally and Jim were madly in love with each other and hung onto each other’s every word, they cuddled and were affectionate in public, they had known each other since high school and started dating at the end of college. When Sally was asked by the marriage counsellor what kinds of interests, books, ideas, training, she and Jim shared she couldn’t find very many things that were Jim’s interests. Just about everything she thought of was something that she enjoyed doing and Jim seemed to be tagging along. After the wedding how will they achieve the fairy tale romance if they have little in common except going to the same schools? Their pseudo-intimacy is based on demographic information, not intellectual, sexual or psychological similarities. Passion Sexual passion is important in all romantic relationships. Where there is no sex, there is no romantic relationship. When couples come together in a committed relationship where there is no intimacy adding sex is not likely to change the relationship to a romantic one.

I

n fact it could be what we call fleeting love. It does not include intimacy and therefore there is little sharing of details about yourself or your partner.

It contains commitment to the passion only, but the sharing of ideas is missing. Let’s go back to Sally and Jim…they enjoy sex together and in the first two years they had fireworks all the time. Now that they are in their second year of the relationship the sexual attraction is strong but they complain that they do not feel close except when they have sex. Sally and Jim never took the time to find out if they could trust each other and grow in intimacy. What often happens is the great sexual chemistry that brought them together soon dies. Commitment When we make a decision to be in a relationship with someone, this is the first stage of the commitment. The second stage is the making of plans with that person. In the past couples were advised that if you have commitment to the relationship you are guaranteed some degree of lasting success. Many years ago marriage was more about duty, right fit for the family, and raising children in a stable environment. Today’s couple wants to experience erotic love along with commitment. It takes discernment to find the partner who will satisfy both of those needs and still crave intimacy with you. Sally and Jim can now say “I’ve ticked the married box” but they have very different dreams for the future. She complains that he doesn’t want to do the things she is interested in. He in turn feels he cannot discuss his hopes and dreams with her. They want to stay together because of the commitment they share for being married but they lack both intimacy and passion at this point. They have fallen into a pattern of empty love.

Counselling can help you to clarify your own needs and fears; this is an important part of deciding who is the right partner for you. If there are areas of disagreement then the sessions can help you to communicate better and resolve the problems that exist. In choosing the right partner it is important to know if you can share in each other’s dreams and goals.

Q

"The problems that may arise in your marriage aren’t a test on how strong your marriage is; they are a test on how strong your marriage can become."- Unkown

Compatibility Compatibility does not mean you are alike in every way. It means two people have similar intellectual, sexual and psychological similarities to be able to challenge each other without creating unnecessary conflicts. Compatible couples find it easy to engage in stimulating conversation, sex and problem-solving. Seeing a Marriage Counsellor or Therapist A good therapist will help the couple to clarify what areas of compatibility they share as well as the areas they need to address. Many of us simply don’t know what questions to ask. Sometimes we are afraid of the answers we might get.

The Mastery of Touch

M

by Stacy Reid Nelson, Jamaica

y husband and I bought The 5 Love Languages: the Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman and read it over some pizza and a pitcher of Pepsi! Now one of the thought-provoking questions in Mr. Chapman’s book is “How do we sustain love in relationships?” He posits that we must discover our partner’s love language and ensure we adore them that way. Your partner's love language its most basic is what you need to do to make him or her feel special, valued and cherished. I believe a key component to lasting, soul-burning, and gut-wrenching love is to observe the Master of all love languages. Before I delve into my analysis of the MASTER love language let me tell you a little about myself. A caveat first if you please. First I am in no way professionally qualified to speak about the secrets of love and how to make it lasting. I wish I were. What I can do is share my experiences, hoping that it may give you that “aahhhh” moment, a little bit of clarity of how to love your partner and even some chuckles.

“At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet.” Plato

am twenty nine years old and I met my husband at fifteen. I fell in love with him a week after meeting him, professed my love and he ran! He came back a few days later, declared his love and fourteen years later we are still together. We got married in June 2009 and today we are blissfully happy.

To say we are blissfully happy is a powerful statement. We have argued, I have cried, I have been upset with him for a full day already! And we have made up and the cycle repeats. There are many things that have kept us together, and the main reason I believe is the grace and blessings of God. The second reason we are still together is the master love language. Dr. Chapman identifies five love languages that each person in a relationship may need one or combination of two or three to feel cherished. They are: §

Words of Affirmation—if this is you or your partner’s love language, compliments and hearing the words such as, “I love you,” are very important.

§

Quality time—spending quality uninterrupted time with

your partner. Being there for your partner is crucial and failure to listen and be available in times of need can cause damage. §

Receiving Gifts—Receiving thoughtful gifts on occasions such as birthday and anniversary, and also the non occasion gifts that say “I am thinking about you.”

§

Acts of service—this is where your partner willingly helps you in every day tasks to ease the burden.

§ Physical touch—Dr. Chapman says this language isn’t all about the bedroom. He posit that a person whose primary language is physical touch loves hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder, or face they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Absence of such touching can be destructive. I appreciate these five love languages, and I propose we need to have a little bit of everything, and that there is a master love language we all need, one that is more dominant than all the other languages to keep love burning in our souls and that is TOUCH.

T

he mastery of touch is shown in the range of emotions we can communicate through it such as anger, fear, love, sympathy, happiness and even sadness. Of course my focus is on how touch shows itself to be a safe haven, a blanket of security, fulfilment, peace and happiness for your partner. I truly believe touch is the one love language no relationship can survive without, which is why I call it the master language. I do not discount the other love languages. I adore when my husband compliments me, spends quality time with me, cooks with me and cleans! I absolutely swoon over gifts. However, I believe and have lived it, that physical touch is the most beautiful and intriguing aspect of keeping the hunger burning.

touch is evocative, it sizzles along nerve endings, it draws forth hunger into the body. The most beautiful thing about touch that I have experienced and all of us can, is that it communicates sharing, need and love. Imagine you are exhausted from a hard day’s work and your partner draws you into his or her arms and hugs you, or gives you a massage. The love and comfort that are communicated in that touch are powerful and can create a deeper bond. It communicates caring, and transference of burdens. There are so many places to touch your partner and to be touched in return that communicate a different set of desires.

A light touch on the lips communicates comfort and that he or she wants to kiss you. Using finger tips to touch your partner’s ear or nose lightly, even a quick kiss communicates playfulness. I speak from my experiences, but I believe you can assess and Kissing your partner on the forehead can communicate such love and security, a blanket of protection. A kiss apply it to your own awesome love affair. I can say or touch on the shoulder can be your way the language of touch has made us closer and of indicating you are ready for deeper have contributed to our blissful happiness intimacy. Dr. Chapman’s book even (the one with the arguing, crying and illustrates that without the deeper making up). The power of touch is so touch of sliding skin to skin with explicit in my relationship and must LOVE LANGUAGES your partner sex would just be be for all. As humans, we are susceptible to pleasure, and a simple touch is one of the greatest delights to give our partner. Being a sensual person, I have said this to many persons and have received scoffs, some have looked thoughtful, and some gave me a smile of pure heated sensuality that hints at the delight they received from their partners through touch. I want you today to imagine how powerful touch is, and make it a part of your lover’s love language. A glance is powerful…it communicates lust and desire. But a touch….a

When we are intimate, if he does not communicate with his lips and finger tips, hugging me and holding me, it would just be wham bam thank you…even if we are married. Without touching you can be in a relationship but so painfully alone. Even if your partner’s love language is not touch…touching is an element that is integral for the long term success of a happy marriage.

Outdoor Weddings Sun & Heat Protection by Samantha Taylor, Jamaica

S

o, you decided to opt for an outdoor wedding under the sun amidst the ocean, beach or garden. The thought of the venues breathtaking view consumes your thoughts and nothing else matters. Are you sure you have considered all the aspects of an outdoor wedding? Did you consider the fact that you and your guests are going to be outside for many hours throughout the day in the beating hot sun? Some people often worry about whether it will rain that they completely forget to prepare themselves for the sun and the heat. The last thing you want is for you or your guests to be

burnt for pictures and leave the wedding early because they are sun-fried. So here are some sun protection tips to keep in mind whether you're the bride, groom or guest at an outdoor wedding: Make sure you apply sunscreen numerous times throughout the day. Encourage your guests to do so as well. Indicate on the invitation that the wedding is outdoors and remind them to bring sunscreen. Here's an idea - hand out small decorative bottles of sunscreen as an early wedding favor for your guests.

Pack (and tell your guests to pack) cover-ups, shawls, wraps and hats for protection against the heat of the sun. Shawls are perfect for covering up your shoulders since they are a prime area for burns. The coordinator of the wedding should ensure there are tents and umbrellas for shade. This is very important because spending the entire day in the sun with no shade can cause heat exhaustion and be harmful to your health. Finally, make sure there is plenty of water for you and your guests. There's nothing worse than being hot and thirsty. Lack of water can cause dehydration which can be very dangerous for you and your guests. Have water coolers setup

Wedding cupcakes are certainly a great alternative to a wedding cake if you're looking to share a sweet treat with your guests that are portable, bite-size, and much more budgetfriendly than a wedding cake which now averages

Cupcakes are for everyone and this idea will not only save you money on the big day, but it will also give you a chance to feature many different flavours and add personality to your big day. There are some things you should take into consideration when choosing your wedding cupcakes: Cupcakes for every season - You should avoid purchasing certain types of cupcakes depending on the season (example: chocolate cupcakes will melt in the summertime, and fruit-filled ones could spoil). I would suggest you keep it light in the spring and summer and save your ganache or puddingfilled wedding cupcakes for a winter time wedding. Highly customized cupcakes with haute cuisine ingredients are currently all the rage. People want very special cupcakes tailored to their event and their personality. W

eddings are stressful. No matter how much planning and preparation you do the stress levels never seem to go down. There always seems to be that opportunity for things to go wrong. So why not reward yourself with a fantastic holiday at the end of it?

One of the biggest things the bride and groom have to look forward to is their honeymoon. Personally I would never recommend delaying the honeymoon particularly for work commitments. You will find you need this time to chill after an enjoyable but stressful period. The wedding day takes so much preparation and planning that the honeymoon is the ideal way for the bride and groom to relax, de-stress and enjoy their first few days or weeks of married life together. Where to go on your honeymoon can be as big a decision as any of the other wedding day decisions you have just spent weeks if not months making. Do you both like the same things when on holiday or are you going to have to find compromise with your honeymoon destination? Some of the more popular honeymoon choices are all-inclusive resorts where everything is paid for in advance. For a honeymoon this can be the ideal choice after the expense of the wedding. You can order snacks, meals and refreshments without worry of a final bill. Many people envisage themselves on honeymoon relaxing surf side with a cocktail in hand, the sun high in the sky and everything done for you. But if that's not your idea of a good time then why not honeymoon somewhere that’s a little bit different. You may also choose to experience several locations while on your honeymoon rather than just one location. The time of year your wedding takes place can have a bearing on where you choose for your honeymoon destination. You may want to continue the theme of your wedding whilst on honeymoon or maybe you want the complete opposite and are looking for some adventure or relaxation. Whatever it is that you are looking for on your honeymoon, spending time with your partner after the stress of the wedding is the most important thing. Use your honeymoon to unwind and relax and wherever you go.....have a ball!

10Indispensable

Tips for Packing

C

ongratulations! After months of planning for the wedding, it's finally time to start your new life together. What better way to ring in a new chapter than with an indulgent, fabulous honeymoon? Once you've picked a destination and booked that honeymoon suite, there's one big to-do left on your list, packing! Here are 10 indispensable tips for packing well while staying sane.

1

THE EARLY BIRD SPECIAL The key to honeymoon bliss is to start planning early, especially if you're leaving on the heels of your big day. Avoid last-minute stress by checking (far in advance if possible) on your airline carrier's baggage rules and health and travel advisories for your destination - (You may need a smaller suitcase or to get certain immunizations).

58 â– WE MAGAZINE â–

Tip: Call your credit card companies and cell phone providers to inform them of your plans so that you can avoid any surprise fees.

2

PLAY DOCTOR It may not be the most romantic thing to think about, but neither is getting sick on your honeymoon with nothing to help you feel better. Over-the-counter medications will help rescue your vacation should you become ill. Pain relievers, cold remedies, allergy medication, nausea relief, antidiarrhea medications, sunscreen, aloe, hand sanitizer, tissues, and insect repellent will get you through most disasters. And always keep your meds with you, never check these. Tip: If you're headed somewhere remote, you should consult a medical professional to get common prescriptions that may be difficult to find when you're abroad just in case. Always make sure to get any necessary shots well in advance of traveling. WWW.WITHEASEMAGAZINEJA.COM

3

YOURS, MINE, AND OURS Hedge your bets in case your baggage is lost by dividing both of your belongings between two suitcases. This way, if disaster strikes, at least you'll have some of your essentials! Tip: Another option is for each person to bring a large carry-on bag of your own essentials and then share one large, checked bag with each of your remaining belongings.

4

A COUPLE THAT WEIGHS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER When it comes to packing, less is more—as long as you have your necessities. It's all about balance: packing like a hoarder will bog you down, while leaving behind essentials will mean running to the store and overspending for little necessities. Lighten your load and avoid over-sized baggage fees with a great technique: pack by outfit. Choose one outfit for each day or occasion you have planned as well as a few versatile pieces that can be worn more than once. And when in doubt, remember that laundry is always available! Tip: When choosing what to bring, pick a color scheme and stick to it. This way, mixing and matching items will be a cinch.

5

THE RING'S THE THING We know you don't want to take it off for anything, but sometimes an activity or destination will mean removing your new ring(s) for safe keeping. Make sure to bring something to store them in at the hotel, so you're not worried about them or stuffing them in your bag as you go. Swimming in the ocean, physical activities (hiking, biking, or even water sports) are all good reasons to store your ring so that you actually have one to wear when you get back home. Tip: Bring the box they came in for safe storage and find a secret or hidden pocket in your luggage where only you would know to find them.

6

IN THE BAG To maximize your space and avoid wrinkling, roll each item tightly, then pack them snugly on top of each other. For particularly wrinkle-prone clothing, place tissue paper on top of items before you roll to prevent wrinkling. (Don't ask us why this works, but it does!) Stuff your socks inside of your shoes, not only will this save you space, but it will help your shoes retain their shape. Pack smaller items like underwear, bathing suits, and especially toiletries in clear plastic bags to save space (added bonus: they will be easier to find).

Tip: Pack an extra bag within your bag to bring on daytime excursions and for souvenirs so you can bring a piece of your getaway home with you.

7

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON Knowing what not to pack in your checked bags is important too. Minimize the chance for potential misadventures by carrying on essential travel documents like itineraries, visas, tickets, confirmations, important contact info, and copies of your passports. Also be sure to hold on to all essential outfits for the wedding if that's your first stop (your wedding dress qualifies). We also recommend you keep a change of clothes and a bathing suit just in case your bag is delayed, or dare we say, lost. Tip: It's also useful to email yourself a folder of all important documents just in case the originals get lost or destroyed. This way you can always regain access to these items no matter where you are.

8

PREPARE FOR DELAYS Keep your young marriage a happy one by preparing for unexpected delays. Bring some favorite snacks so you don't end up stuck searching for something to eat. Take (or download) a couple extra books, magazines, crossword puzzles, or movies to tide you over for a few extra hours. Tip: Be sure to bring extra batteries and chargers to keep you and your gadgets energized for the long trip.

9

CAMERA READY Your honeymoon is a milestone moment in your life that should be captured as such. If you don't have one, invest in a decent camera (or consider registering for one as a wedding gift). Exotic honeymoon locales and precious moments like these deserve better than smartphone photography or a selfie. And don't forget the chargers and accessories for your camera like extra batteries and memory cards.

10

OFF THE GRID Leave computers and tablets in the room. Your honeymoon is a rare moment in life when it's just the two of you. Unplug, turn off your cell, and savor every moment together. Tip: Of course, part of the fun of traveling these days is posting fun selfie photos while you're on the go. Our best tip is to keep your phone on airplane mode for the whole trip. That way you can only post and share photos while on the WiFi in your room. Source: www.fodors.com

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PLAN AN EVENT? by Terri Myrie, Jamaica

S

uccessful events are planned and executed every day, but what exactly determines the success of an event? Is it the feedback from patrons, the seamless execution of tasks or the accomplishments of goals and objectives? There are a multitude of activities and variables that determine the outcome of an event, but what exactly does it take to plan an event? We can acknowledge that there are various types of events; fundraisers, concerts and conferences, to name a few. Events also vary in size, duration and purpose however the approach to planning each is derived from the same basic principles. There are three major steps that will set the stage for success. The first step is visualizing your event, the second is creating a roadmap and the third, implementation. Visualizing your event is basically determining your event concept. You must determine the purpose, goals and objectives of your event. It is important to brainstorm and ask yourself questions such as, what would you like to accomplish? Where and when would the event be held? Who is your target audience?

The Value of Professional Videography by: Annmarie Salmon, Jamaica

O

nly a trained and experienced wedding videographer is adequately prepared to capture all the details and memorable moments of your special day, from the rush of preparations at the beginning of the day, through the emotional moments of the ceremony and to the excitement of the reception.

Afterwards, a professional with creative editing skills will polish your tape artistically to produce a video (or DVD) that not only documents your day, but also is fun and entertaining to watch again and again! Choosing the right videographer is vital to the memories you will have even after your wedding day ends, so get an early start in the process of selecting your videographer and shop based on quality. Placing videography at the top of your priority list also ensures the best chance of securing your first choice, as today's top wedding videographers are booked far in advance. Just like professional photography, pricing for professional videography varies widely. Talent, technology and time are three key factors which will affect the pricing of your video. For example, you may find professional videographers using cameras and editing systems that are similar. However, it will be their skills, experience, style, and techniques in both shooting and editing that will immediately capture your attention and be the distinguishing differences you will notice in their work.

T

his is why it is virtually impossible to shop by price alone when selecting your videographer. Professional wedding videography is an artistic, not a mechanical medium as videographers shoot and edit video differently.

Video styles and quality can vary tremendously. In order to make an informed decision about a videographer - it will be the distinguishing differences of style, quality and end results that will excite you. Be sure that your videographer can match your preferences, and ask to see actual samples of work produced by the videographer who will be recording your event. When you stop by to see samples, you will also have an ideal opportunity to discuss your wedding details and style preferences before making your final decision.

Making a Healthy Start by Kerry N Weatherly MS RDN, Jamaica

D

etox has become somewhat of a buzz word in recent times. Usually when used it refers to some diet that is used to help the body get rid of toxins. The detox diet can take many forms, juicing and the elimination or inclusion of particular foods or entire food groups are some examples. What a detox may do is jump start weight loss if that is something you are trying to achieve but because of the very restrictive nature both in calories and nutrients they are not diets one should undertake for the long term. It should also be noted there is "no basis in human biology for a detox," says Frank Sacks, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health.

Eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits as part of an overall healthy diet may reduce risk for heart disease, including heart attack and stroke.

Making healthy eating and exercise a way of life will impact how you feel in mind and body. These lifestyle changes may be just what you need Up your intake of vegetables and fruits. Aim for 2 1/2- 3 cups of vegetables and 1 1/2 - 2 cups of fruits per day. One way to include fruit in your diet is to have them between meals as snacks. Include vegetables with a variety of colours - orange, green, red, purple, yellow and include them at every meal. Vegetables and fruits are excellent sources of vitamins A and C and minerals such as manganese, and potassium.

Make some meals plant based. I am a supporter and promoter of meatless Mondays. This movement encourages making Monday a meat-free day. It does not have to be a Monday. Chose any day of the week and make it completely plant based. So instead of meat, poultry or fish make legumes your source of protein at mealtimes e.g. peas, beans and or lentils. Legumes are excellent sources of protein and fibre. Legumes may also reduce the risk of some cancers. Aim to have three cups per week. Whole grains should be your grains of choice. Whole grains have the bran, germ and endosperm that is the 'whole grain' present. Consumption of these grains instead of the refined grains (white rice and white flour) may be good sources of protein, fibre, iron and B vitamins. Nutrients that are needed for cell repair, gastrointestinal health, energy and healthy skin and hair. Just a quick note on the ingredient list. The word ‘whole’ must be there for the food to contain a whole grain so it is whole wheat not just wheat. Include these whole grains; oatmeal in your breakfast smoothie, whole cornmeal as your hot breakfast cereal and brown rice as your lunch and/or dinner time starch. Healthful eating is within your reach. Make a commitment and stick to it. Your body will thank you.

Loving Cinderella

M

Tips for Step-Parents by Racquel Ellis, Jamaica

ost single people I know fear the thought of marrying someone with children. They panic at the thought of raising a child that they did not bear, especially if the children are teenagers or have already developed an awareness of who they are, what they want and don’t want. Now this is usually from the perspective of adults but the fear is no different for children – they usually dread the thought of becoming somebody’s “step-child”. Thinking about the issue, the age old fairytale of Cinderella came to mind. I believe that Cinderella has a few gems from which we can glean some tips for caring

for children who are not our own. The version of the Cinderella story I came across opened with Cinderella as an unhappy girl due to the death of her mother and her father remarrying a widow with two daughters. First lesson, if you are marrying someone who already has children, chances are that the children are also in an emotional turmoil because of what has happened between their parents, the fact that their mother/father is taking on a new woman/man or some other reason – even if the reason is not “logical”. This means that persons entering this situation should more often than not prepare themselves for an uphill struggle as both you and your spouse’s children adjust to knowing each other and being in the same space.

T

he Cinderella story continued to say that the stepmother “…didn't like her (Cinderella) one little bit” and all the stepmother’s “…kind thoughts and loving touches were for her own daughters”. Now this part struck me. It’s almost as if Cinderella’s stepmother already decided that she would dislike her! I mean Cinderella did not even occupy her thoughts except when there was work to be done. Herein lies the second gem from this story. If you’re going to marry someone who already has children, you must have the capacity to love them as your own children. It is impossible to love a man/woman without genuinely loving his/her children. In fact, don’t even view the children as “step” children – view and accept them as your own children. Going further, introduce them to others as your children. This is even more critical if you have children of your own. Begin to sensitise your children to the expected behaviour towards your spouse and his/her children and help them to learn that you are all going to be one family regardless of the biological parent to whom they belong. You need to be able to love your spouse’s children just as how you love and care for your own children! If you can’t, rethink getting married or being with your spouse, as doing so is the beginning of sorrow! Ladies and gentlemen, I reiterate, loving your spouse’s child/children as your own child/children is the first step in winning the heart(s) of your “step” child/children.

or spawn are no more important than the child/children borne or spawned by your spouse! Have a roster if you need to but all children need to realise and accept that you operate as a family; and in a family each person has a role to play to make it work. Step-children are not slaves or hired hands, they are the children of your spouse – you can’t hate them and love your spouse! If this happens, eventually you will lose your spouse or both of you will lose the child/children. Now those are tips from Cinderella and I know I have just skimmed the surface because there are a lot of things to consider regarding this issue. However, I believe that you can use this as a starting point if you have step-children. In general, I am not going to tell you that it will be an easy road – you and your spouse’s children will have to go through a period of adjustment. It is important that you remain patient, show similar interest in the lives of your spouse’s children as well as your own children (if you have any) and continuously find ways to improve the relationship between and among family members. However, if you do all you can and you still meet upon the brick wall of resistance from your spouse’s children, then talk to your spouse about all of you seeking professional help. Children tend to pick up on underlying feelings quicker than how adults do – make sure you give your spouse’s children a good true impression of how you will love and care for them as “your” children.

The third and final gem from this story, which follows on from the second, comes from how Cinderella’s step-mother treated her compared to how she treated her own children. There was no rest or comfort for Cinderella. She had to work all day while her step-sisters flitted about doing nothing and preparing to land the next rich suitor/prince! You ask yourself, how can a woman be comfortable treating the child of someone she loves in such a despicable manner? Is the spouse aware of such treatment? Well the spouse’s awareness is for another article but let’s learn what we can from the step-mother’s attitude. Ladies and gentlemen, household chores should be equitably assigned to all children – whether they came from your loins or not! Preferential treatment will only bear resentment and hatred! Notice that the stepmother’s children mirrored her attitude towards Cinderella. Your children are going to model your attitude and behaviour. The children you bear

You Should KnowAbout Your Husband

He'll be happier, we promise.

W

hether you recently said "I do" or just celebrated a double-digit anniversary, you can probably spout off a lot of info about your husband — his middle name, where he was born, his favorite food. But surprisingly, there are some other things you should know that can help bring you even closer together. Try remembering these crucial tips the next time your husband becomes a complete mystery. 1. When he needs space Sharing office news, the kids' schedules and the latest neighborhood drama as soon as your husband walks in the door each night can backfire. Most women want to immediately connect at the end of the day. For a lot of men, they need their space more than ever then. Give your hubby a few minutes to unwind when he comes home. You're more likely to get his undivided attention if you wait. 2. When he's really listening If it seems like your husband constantly tunes you out, consider this: Men may look at other areas of the room while still paying attention. Rather than focus on where your husband's gaze lands during conversations, note how he responds to you. If your words are truly falling on deaf ears gently tell him you feel he isn't listening; then, let him respond. Don't accuse or blame him. 3. Which topics set him off? Maybe it's talking about his mom's flavorless cooking — or his late nights at work. It's important to know where the emotional landmines are. If you step on one, you can expect an explosion, but you can't avoid all ‘hot topics’. Find the right space and time to talk about these issues. Try to understand your husband's side, and then approach him in a nonthreatening way. You could say, "I'm not looking to upset you; I'm just looking for a solution to an issue that's causing me a lot of pain.” 4. When (and how) he needs support Couples who say they have strong spousal support and face daily stress have 50% higher rates of marriage satisfaction, according to a 2012 study. While wives equate affection and warmth with support, husbands feel supported when they’re appreciated. Tell him how much you appreciate him as a partner to give him a boost. 5. How he views his role as husband and father Whether it's just you two or you plus kids, you and your husband have equally important family roles. It’s vital that 77 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

you recognize how he views his part and respect it. Of course that’s a two-way street, but it's even more important for men. Respecting his role helps him feel close to you. Fight the urge to cast your husband into specific parts without his input. Keep in mind that you don't always have to be in sync with parenting. Differences in temperament and style are key to parents' success and the enjoyment of parenting. 6. What his dreams are It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of day-today life, but happy couples discuss each other's hopes and dreams to build and sustain intimacy. Make it a point to regularly talk to your husband about him. Find out his career goals for the next few years or just hear about his favorite book, TV show or food of the moment. Then, reciprocate by telling him more about you. Communication helps you grow with each other instead of apart. 7. When he isn’t loving your love life If your man isn't showing signs he wants to be intimate perhaps he usually kisses your neck or gives you a telltale look then it’s time to rekindle the fire. Couples reconnect when they try out-of-the-box activities together. Women experience intimacy through communication, so we often underplay sharing something novel. Plan a date that'll get you both in the mood or just do something fun that you both enjoy. Uhm, just turn up the heat. 8. When an argument is going nowhere For some disagreements, there's just no productive way to fight it out. To find out if you're gearing up for a purposeful fight, rate the importance of the topic. If it's a core value, like how to raise your children or where to live, rank it highly. If it's not, like the colour of a new bedspread or what to have for dinner, it may not be worth an argument. Next, determine if you and your husband are ready for the discussion. If either of you are tired, hungry or distracted, don't get into a conversation about something important. 9. That you don't know everything about him No matter how much you communicate with your husband, you can never completely know him, and that's OK. It's never good to believe you know everything about your partner for sure and therefore not ask. It's vital that you and your husband continually get to know each other. If you’re growing, you have to continue to catch up with each other. That means there’s at least one enjoyable thing you can do each week: get to know and fall in love with your husband all over again. Souce: www.goodhousekeeping.com

Invest Wisely... From 'I Do' and Beyond by Scotiabank, Jamaica

F

iguring out the best investment choices to make can sometimes feel a little intimidating for many people. With so many investing options available, you want to be certain that you are making appropriate decisions when it comes to your money.

The process of creating an investment plan can be even more complicated if you are working along with your spouse to decide on the best strategies. You can’t only think of your desires; you will also have to consider your partner’s requirements and concerns before taking any steps. Like any other major decision that you may need to make as a couple, it’s important to approach investing in a considerate way to ensure that you will both be satisfied with the end result. Here are some tips that can help you to get the best from investing as a couple: 1. Determine your money personalities Most challenges arise when couples have different approaches to spending and saving money. If one person wants to put away more disposable income for future needs while the other likes to receive immediate gratification with money, then you can expect that there will be conflicts. 2. Set common goals Even if you and your spouse have different money styles, you can still establish common ground for your shared benefit. Have a frank discussion about your dreams for the 78 ■ WE MAGAZINE ■

future, such as owning a home, planning for your children’s education and the kind of lifestyle you desire. 3. Pool funds for investments Once you are in agreement about your financial future, then it’s smart to create an account where you can both contribute some of your individual earnings for investing purposes. This might be an agreed percentage of your income, or a specific dollar amount per month. 4. Learn and share knowledge To smoothly navigate the investing waters, you both need to get educated about different types of investments and their associated risks and returns. If one party has less time to devote to this learning, then the other should make an effort to share the knowledge gleaned. 5. Decide on responsibilities In order not to burden one person with all the investing tasks, you should both decide who is best suited to take responsibility for different areas. For example, one person could keep a file of the monthly statements while the other may visit the financial institution to do transactions. With expert guidance from your Scotia Investment advisor and a commitment to work as a team, over time you will be able to create the right investing mix. Working together on your investing strategies may strengthen your relationship and help you to accomplish your shared objectives.
