Kindergarten is the New 1st Grade: Is your Preschooler Ready?
W
hen you think back to your own kindergarten experience, it probably involved a half-day program and plenty of fun activities - finger painting, sand play and nap time. Likely the hardest parts were learning the alphabet and counting to 100. Fast forward to today. While kindergarten still offers a fun learning environment, it’s certainly more focused on academic achievement. Kindergartners often know the alphabet and have solid counting skills prior to the first day of school. If students aren’t reading at the beginning of the school year, they’re certainly expected to be doing so by the end. “Kindergarten is the new first grade” isn’t just an anecdote, it’s a fact. New research from the University of Virginia compares kindergarten and first-grade classrooms between 1998 and 2010, finding that kindergarten classes have become increasingly like first grade, with more time spent on academic instruction and, ultimately, higher educational expectations. Each year an estimated 4 million children enter kindergarten. To help pre-K kids improve core learning skills and get them excited about school, it’s important to find fun, age-appropriate ways to help them learn. Consider these expert ideas for preparing kids ages 3-6 for kindergarten.
Educational apps Children today have a natural knack for technology. While it’s important to monitor and balance screen time, the right technology can help educate kids. Preschool Academy by IntellectoKids is an ideal example. With over 50 educational activities in one app, kids will learn the alphabet and develop important skills like counting, sorting, logic and critical thinking - the foundations for math and reading. Best yet, the learning is rooted in amusing animated puzzles about musical instruments, fun train adventures or whimsical letter/number games. This educational app allows parents to customize for multiple children and select between three levels, increasing in difficulty as they play and learn. Like Preschool Academy, the best learning games are constantly adding fresh new learning activities and are always free of ads or hidden in-app purchases. Fine motor skills Fine motor skills, also known as dexterity, involve the coordination and control of muscles to create small movements. This usually requires hand-eye coordination as well. Being prepared for kindergarten means having a basic ability to complete fine motor actions like holding a pencil correctly, tying shoes and sorting small objects. One of the easiest ways to support your child’s fine motor development is by providing lots of opportunities to color and write. Make crayons and paper readily available and let kids’ imagina-
tions take off. As they try to draw a bird, write a story or create patterns, they are really preparing themselves for the classroom. Reading and conversation Language is a heavy focus throughout the kindergarten curriculum. One way to prepare your child is to make reading a daily activity, including classics like “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” “Harold & the Purple Crayon” or “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.” Fostering a love of books can set the stage for learning important reading skills. Visit your local library, stock your bookshelf and download digital books. Additionally, make time for genuine conversation with your child. Both reading and speaking help children expand their knowledge of the English language. They’ll also learn important social skills, and you’ll also find yourself developing a deeper bond with your little one. Preschool Want kids to be prepared for kindergarten? Enroll in preschool a few days a week. This experience gives children the perfect foundation to prepare them for their educational journey. Preschools provide introductory education in writing and math, but it’s a lot of fun, too. What’s more, kids learn proper social etiquette and how to follow classroom rules. Being able to sit still, listen to the teacher, raise a hand to ask a question and interact respectably among peers are all important skills that kids will need in order to thrive in an academic environment. If preschool isn’t possible, consider joining a playgroup or visiting the library for story time, and encourage social interaction with new kids at the playground. Knowing that kindergarten is more challenging than ever, smart parents are taking charge by introducing age-appropriate educational activities now. From smart apps like IntellectoKids Preschool Academy to reading every day, you’re helping build the brain power that leads to success in kindergarten and beyond.■ Frederick Corder, MD FAAP

ummer means long days, bountiful sunshine and fresh fare to tantalize the taste buds. Locally grown produce, grilled meats and seafood, and new takes on classic dishes like pizza and pasta make this the season to raise a glass and toast to family, friends and the sharing of delicious food. White wine is a classic summer drink that never goes out of style. However, you may want to look beyond the traditional chardonnays and sauvignon blancs when creating the perfect pairings for your summer menus. If you want alternative white wines for upcoming meal pairings, the following options are guaranteed to satisfy whether you’re making an intimate meal for two or are hosting a large outdoor event. Perfect pairing: Pinot gris and grilled poultry and seafood Wine to try: Wairau River Pinot Gris 2015 Marlborough Grilling poultry and seafood infuses amazing flavor, making it a popular main dish for summer dining. A pinot gris is a fantastic dry white wine that complements these types of dishes. With the rich fresh flavor of pear and green apple mingling with touches of spice, this wine adds weight to the palate and completes the dining experience. Perfect pairing: Chenin blanc with salads and fresh vegetables Wine to try: Protea Chenin Blanc 2016 Western Cape Whether you regularly visit the farmers market, subscribe to a CSA or grow your own produce in a home garden, fresh vegetables are abundant throughout the summer season. When enjoying a luscious salad, pour yourself a glass of chenin blanc. This lively wine with notes of stone fruit have a light body that enhances without overwhelming fresh fare. Perfect pairing: Garganega with shellfish, fish and white pizza Wine to try: Anselmi San Vincenzo 2016 Veneto Summer is the ideal time for new takes on favorite dishes. For example, try a white pizza for extraordinary, outside-the-box flavor. White pizza typically features a garlic sauce that is then topped with loads of vegetables. This light take on pizza calls for a crisp, medium-bodied wine made from garganega grapes. (This dry variety is also a great option for shellfish and fish dishes.) Perfect pairing: Carricante with pesto dishes and white fish ceviche Wine to try: Alta Mora Etna Bianco 2015 Wines made from the carricante grape are sure to please. Fresh and fruity, with touches of earthy minerality, this silky, full-bodied wine is a wonderful pair to the pesto dishes that are so popular during summertime. (Also ideal for seafood and shellfish, particularly fish ceviche.) Perfect pairing: Falanghina with pasta made with citrus- and cream-based sauces Wine to try: Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina 2015 Inspired by warm weather, chefs often create a citrus- or cream-based pasta dish on their summer menus. You too can enjoy this quintessential summer trend by cooking your own recipe from the comfort of your home and then enjoying it with a big glass of Falanghina. Fresh and well-balanced, this wine blends flavors of flowers and fruit, and has a clean finish.■June - July 2017

SWEET Peace
W
hen a death occurs, it brings with it a plethora of decisions that must be made and many, many tasks. Grief is most always accompanied by considerable angst and emotions that are often overpowering. I’m a big proponent of Pre-Planning. I witness first-hand, on a regular basis how planning for this particular family crisis can help to alleviate a great deal of the force that is often associated with grief. Here in the beautiful Prince Georges County we are comprised of mostly ordinary, working class families. Rarely do I serve families who just have $10,000.00 lying around ready to fund the expense of a funeral. The average cost of funeral services in this region is $7,500. This cost DOES NOT include the cost of earth burial aka cemetery cost. Cemetery cost should be factored in as an addition to funeral cost. Aside from those two major expenses, you may want to consider the cost of death certificates, flowers, clergy, and limousines, just to name a few. Many families are choosing cremation as an option. Although cremation holds less of an economic obligation, there is still a nominal cost associated with it. My day to day observations led me to believe many families are choosing cremation because you’ve failed to Pre-Plan. Case in Point: I am serving a family, as I write to you now, who is economically unprepared. Their initial request to me over the phone was that their mother be cremated after a traditional funeral service and wake/visitation. Once in arrangement conference, I discovered that the spouse of the deceased was a military veteran currently interred in a military cemetery. Because of the veteran’s privilege to a military interment, the spouse is afforded the right of burial alongside her husband, FREE of charge. The family was not aware of this right. Once I shared this information with the family the atmosphere in the room and the tone of the funeral arrangements quickly took on new life. The family was visibly significantly RELIEVED. They were relieved because they no longer had to compromise what their hearts wanted for their mom all along. A day after the arrangement conference the family supplied me with the veteran’s form DD-214. I am happy to report that mom is currently resting well with her spouse at Quantico National Cemetery and the family is enjoying sweet peace. It is to you and your family’s advantage that you set funds aside in a trust account, savings or employ the aid of a FINAL EXPENSE insurance policy. We must ALL prepare ourselves for this type of family crisis. It is like no other crisis that we will expe10

Rogue retirement account?

Expert Advice to Reduce Rollover Stress
I
t’s happened to almost everyone: you leave a job and have a retirement account that you are no longer actively contributing to. It sits there for months - maybe years - because you’re not sure exactly where to move it or what the process is like to roll it over. You know that money could probably be better invested, but moving accounts is intimidating, so it sits. “It’s common for people to be nervous about transferring retirement accounts like IRAs and 401(k)s,” says Nick Holeman, a financial planning expert at Betterment.com. “Moving accounts shouldn’t be something you fear or put off because you think it’s too complicated.” Holeman says three main causes for concern are potential taxes, excessive fees and process complexity. However, these concerns are often based on misconceptions, and he wants to set the record straight to empower investors to take control of rogue retirement accounts. Potential taxes Many people worry about potential tax concerns when moving retirement accounts. They’ve heard about the high penalties for early withdrawal and figure the best way to avoid them is to let the account be. “A rollover is not equivalent to a withdrawal,” says Holeman. “When you transfer retirement accounts through the appropriate processes, you’re still keeping it in the same categorization. It just now lives in a different place.” A rollover can also help facilitate better control of your money. For example, if you roll over an old 401(k) into an IRA account, you are no longer limited to the investment options selected by your employer. This freedom of choice can help you make more customized investment decisions based on your personal goals. Of course, it’s important to remember that investing in securities always involves risk and there is the potential to lose money.
Possible fees A rollover means closing an old account and opening a new account. This process can incur fees that will be unique to each provider. Many people worry about the potential cost, which causes them to leave accounts untouched. “Research account closing fees but be sure to keep in mind the big picture,” Holeman says. “It’s like ripping off a bandage. For example, a one-time $20 closing fee is better than a $100 annual fee that could be reduced when you move your account.” Holeman’s advice: always know what fees you’re paying. Before selecting a new financial organization for your retirement savings, research fees and consider selecting a new account with no trading costs, commission fees, or rebalancing fees. For example, Betterment’s Digital plan charges just 0.25 percent per year and that covers goal-based financial advice, tax-efficient investing, automatic rebalancing, and other smart features that help you keep more of your money. Complexity “People tend to treat rolling over a retirement account like going to the dentist,” Holeman says. “It’s important but usually not urgent, so people tend to put it off.” What’s more, people are intimidated by all the paperwork, lengthy forms and seemingly complex steps, so they delay rollovers. Holeman says moving accounts is typically easier than most people think, and in fact, after the process is complete, many people regret not doing it sooner. “Often, moving retirement accounts can be done completely online thanks to advanced technology,” says Holeman. “Betterment offers a ‘60 second rollover’ for certain accounts from supported companies, and there’s someone available to help should you have any questions. Moving accounts is typically easier than people imagine.” You should carefully consider whether a rollover is right for your own personal situation, including the specific fees and services associated with your 401(k). Visit betterment.com/rollover to learn more about factors you should consider when deciding whether a rollover might be right for you. Renovation Resolutions for Your Home this Year
S
pring spruce-ups often focus on the outdoors, but when summer temperatures arrive, it’s time to move your home improvement efforts indoors. Keep cool and reinvent your home’s interior with stylish décor that adds the “wow factor” summer deserves. These five refreshing projects will help create a beautiful setting worthy of every season. • Address those kitchen cabinets. The cabinets are a major focal point in a kitchen, and even the smallest changes can have a major impact on its look and feel. Start with a subtle, functional update by replacing old hardware with modern metal accents. And, for a slightly bolder change, consider a fresh coat of paint to infuse a new design persona throughout the space. • Set the perfect scene. Take advantage of the spring weather and longer days with perfect natural lighting. Hunter Douglas’ PowerView Motorization is a sophisticated wireless operating system that allows homeowners to program their shades to automatically adjust throughout the day to make the most of natural light as it changes. Start by creating scenes - different combinations of shade positions in one room or throughout the house - to achieve perfect room lighting, window privacy and energy-efficiency. Then, schedule the scenes to activate at the times you choose, like opening to greet each morning’s sunrise, closing mid-day to deflect the heat of the afternoon sun, and closing each night to protect your privacy. PowerView motorized shades also seamlessly integrates with other sophisticated whole-home automation systems to add another level of convenience to everyday living and greater connectivity to your smart home.

• Add comfort and style to hardwood floors. Hardwood floors are a popular style for any home, and adding comfort to the chic-but sometimes unforgiving-look is easy with the right accessories. Place comfortable, eye-catching rugs in key areas throughout the home, including the foyer or beneath the kitchen and dining room tables. These subtle accents will create a striking contrast, soften acoustics and add stylish comfort for your feet. • Keep cool as the weather warms. Window treatments can serve as great accessory or accent, and the right window dressings will provide beauty and function in one. With Duette Architella honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas, sophisticated fabric choices add a modern touch to any space, while its unique cell-within-a-cell design can significantly reduce the amount of solar heat transferred through windows to keep you cooler as the summer heat kicks in. This smart upgrade lends an elegant touch to kick off air conditioning season. • Build the bathroom of your dreams. The bathroom is supposed to be an oasis, and if it’s lacking in spa-like comforts, now is the perfect time to whip it into shape. Enjoy a luxurious massage without stepping out of the house by swapping out outdated shower heads with high-pressured and multi-setting ones that transform water into soft mists, relaxing pulses, or powerful cascade indoors. With these easy décor updates, making your home more comfortable and stylish is a bright idea sure to last all season and through the year. Add living space to your home with an easy patio makeover
E
veryone looks forward to a shift into summer mode, with its sun-soaked days, flower-scented breezes and velvety nights under the stars. Now’s the time to take advantage of a golden opportunity right outside your door. Celebrate summer and all it offers by recreating your outdoor space. Whether it’s a balcony, a patio or a deck, a few touches are all you need to turn it into a highly functional living space. When done right, a patio makeover is like a boost to your home’s square footage of living space without straining your wallet. Think of the patio as a summer room, and the possibilities really open up. One approach to making your summer room perfect is to start by thinking of your needs and what you love to do. If you could add any room to your home, what would it be, and what would you use it for? Then, turn to a resource like Big Lots, which offers everything you need to build that summer room, while keeping you within budget. Your summer living room Transform any outdoor space into a relaxing oasis that’s perfect for unwinding and summer daydreams. Your key piece is a comfortable outdoor couch you can really sink into. It’s always best to start with a neutral-colored cushion, then work the accessories and accent pieces, including side tables, brightly colored throw pillows and outdoor lanterns to make the space feel extra homey and just like an authentic living room. These decor pieces can be easily and affordably switched out year-over-year to make your outdoor space feel fresh and new. With an easy assembly gazebo, you can also keep the space cool and comfortable in the heat of the day. Finally, if your patio faces an open or public area, a row of evergreens planted in large colorful pots will transform it into an intimate space with a perfect touch of nature. Your summer party room With the right pieces, you can set the scene for any gathering of friends and family. Start with ample seating. Add to the traditional living room setup with an outdoor cushioned bench, and position some accent chairs and tables in a nook or two for conversation clusters. A patterned outdoor rug also helps to delineate spaces on a large patio or deck.

A fire pit always creates a natural centerpiece and gathering spot. Some designs take this up a notch and incorporate the soft glow of fire right into a tabletop, making it easy to talk long into the summer night. As a finishing touch, be sure to have a wireless speaker and playlist ready to set the mood with music. Your summer kitchen The downside of summer living is building up unwanted heat in the kitchen from cooking dinner. The best solution is to take it outside. Don’t limit the grill to weekends and burgers and brats. Explore the many grilling recipes out there to expand your repertoire. While you’re doing this, set up your patio as an outdoor cooking station that’s ready to go whenever you’re ready to start cooking. Set up a sturdy table for prepping veggies and meats and a selection of lightweight, outdoor serving dishes. The variety of colors and designs are endless and add to the space aesthetic. (Just as you would indoors, make sure the surface is clean before you get started.) Use colorful crates to keep grilling tools, potholders and outdoor dishes and glassware organized and handy. Finally, pick up some bright-colored pots that match your decor style and plant rosemary, parsley, basil and other herbs so they’re within easy reach to add fresh flavors to your grilled fish and chicken, as well as those tasty summer veggies. These potted plants also make for beautiful, easy centerpieces. Your summer dining room Dining outside is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy food as well as the company of your family and friends. When you choose a patio table, choose one with ample seating, and keep things comfortable and colorful with waterproof cushions. Umbrellas can throw shade on a sun-drenched deck or patio, making daytime dining (or your morning coffee time) more pleasant and easy on the eyes. If you’re looking for something different, a patio umbrella outfitted with lights on the underside will let you linger over dinner longer. Creating beautiful outdoor spaces can be easy, but it also doesn’t have to break the budget. Big Lots has a wide variety of affordable patio furniture and décor so you can create an outdoor scene with indoor style. Visit BigLots.com or a store near you for all your patio and outdoor accessory needs.■ June - July 2017
