life as A GAMER Ever wondered how and why people get addicted to games 0r have you ever felt singled out because you once had a dream about you living in the gaming world? Luckily for you, INTO speak to Tom Kelly, a hardcore gamer who speaks for his love of gaming, and also tries to exercise some of his demons from the pressure of working. Q: Hello Tom. Thank you for joining us for INTO’s Life as a game interview. First question I must ask, when was the last time you played a console? Tom: “(Chuckles), precisely 45 minutes ago. Played Call of Duty zombies in case you’re interested. Just to help me relax and get in the gaming zone before this interview” (Cheekily smirks)

Q: Going back to that, do you find gaming helps you take your mind off things from reality? Tom: “Absolutely! It comforts the pressure of the whole working lifestyle. That for me is the beauty of a passion, when you’re in the situation of been stressed or some sorts, and the one thing you love can help you pull through that predicament and completely ease the pressure. Sounds stupid, but that’s what gaming does for me”

Q: As a hardcore gamer yourself, what does it take to start being established as a hardcore gamer? It’s not all completely about just playing games is it? Tom: “Being a

hardcore gamer does have many minor consequences, but it’s all worth it (Laughs with a tint of guilt). Skipping school to go rock out in the gaming world with your friends. Spending nearly all your money on games and gaming equipment. Going sleepless at night due to hectic battles online with people all around the world. Me and my friends have a motto – Eat, Sleep, Game, Repeat (Chuckles, and nods his head in embarrassment) which says it all”

Q: When did you realise you actually were a hardcore gamer? Tom: “This is a funny story actually. I had a dream where I actually replicated one of the levels on the old Grand Theft Auto games. But rather than playing the level, I was literally in the game and it was as if somebody was controlling me with an Xbox controller. I was experience the very dangerous world of Grand Theft Auto (Laughs hysterically) and from that point onwards, I knew I have a gaming addiction”

Q: What is your favourite game genre?

Tom: “(looks up in deep thought) Mine varies roughly every month. One month I’ll go crazy on action games, another month I’ll go crazy on sports games, and another month I’ll go bonkers on driving games. Overall I’d say my favourite genre is action games because of the graphics, the storyline, and the distinct style of all action games. Any game made by Rockstar will amuse me”

Q: Despite your great love of gaming, I can imagine it can be very frustrating on occasions?

Tom: “There’s nothing more frustrating than being stuck on a level for ages because you simply cannot do it. I’m not over exaggerating either when I say it stresses you out. The gaming demons really do come into play then (puts his head in his hands). In the end, you just have to show great resistance and tenacity in order to complete the level. It

Q: Is there more than just gaming to you Tom?

Tom: “Of course. Massive fan of Arsenal Football Club, I love watching TV sitcoms and sport in general. Going to the cinema and chilling with friends is another interest of mine. I am renowned for my love of gaming, but I think some people go over the top with my love of gaming (faintly laughs) I do have a lot more to my life than gaming which people don’t tend to believe. And of course, I have a Full-Time job, so there’s still a lot that goes on in my life”

Thank you for joining us Tom. It has been very intriguing to hear about your love of gaming and what it means to be a gamer. Tom: “(Winks and shakes my hand). My pleasure. Thank you for conducting this interview with me. It’s been great fun and a pleasure”

goes unnoticed how much of gaming is in the head!

Q: Is gaming a big hobby within your family or household?

Tom: “All of us fellow siblings love playing PS3 and Xbox. They’re not perhaps as much of a gaming addict as me, but my brothers in particular are always up for playing and they eventually go through a phase where they get very addicted to a game. Believe it or not, gaming isn’t all that goes in our household” (giggles)

Previewing England’s World Cup Chances

Will it be yet another case of England “building you up to let you down?” My verdict here.

S

o England are set to make their 14th World Cup appearance in Brazil this summer after coming through what I will label as“a very easy group” and can Roy Hodgson replicate the success of 1966 where England tasted World Cup glory for the first and only time? I wouldn’t get my hopes up. England’s last outing at the World Cup saw them annihilated by an impressive Germany 4-1, and despite Frank Lampard’s controversial disallowed goal, Germany deservedly proceeded to the Quarter-Finals. But do England really stand a chance in Brazil? What does Roy Hodgson need to do to go far in Brazil? One thing that strikes me about the likes of Spain, Germany and Brazil, is the fact that they are so ruthless and not frightened by the option of playing youngsters. I believe England have been too guilty of choosing more experienced players rather than giving what I class as “the new breed” a go. Most of the English players who have had a good season are young and have a lot of hunger, but the likelihood is they won’t play regularly in Brazil. Prime examples – Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling, Luke Shaw, Jordan Henderson, and in patches Andros Townsend are youngsters who have all been a bright spark this season and deservedly should

make Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad. Steven Gerrard has rekindled his form and has actually displayed some brilliant versatility and professionalism in adapting to the new role. Daniel Sturridge has been immense for Liverpool this season alongside the magical Uruguayan Luis Suarez. Going back to the youngsters, I would have no hesitation in playing them often in Brazil and putting them in the starting 11, especially Barkley, Lallana, and Shaw. But is that likely to happen? No. Hodgson will probably stick with the old guard such as Frank Lampard, James Milner, and Ashley Cole – in which neither of them have been regular starters for their clubs this season. Out with the old, in with the new I say, especially when you consider that not many English players possess the mercurial talent of Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana, and Luke Shaw. Why choose the youngsters? Let’s further analyse the diverse playing styles of the 3 main youngster I referred too. Adam Lallana is 25, but I class him as a youngster as he is inexperienced at an International level and has only really burst onto the scene in the last 18 months. A player who demonstrates great technical ability and movement off the ball, Lallana is one of the rare creative English players who also possesses good skill and calmness on the ball.

He’s not like your typical gritty, hardworking English player, he would certainly add something different to the England team, and I also think the same about Ross Barkley. For me, Ross Barkley is the biggest young English talent by quite a substantial margin, and he can literally create magic out of absolutely nowhere. His explosiveness, his ability to beat players, his ability to use both his left and right foot fluently, his technical ability, and his flair are a joy to behold. He is regarded by many pundits too to be a future England captain, he has the lot for me. Luke Shaw is an energetic, powerful fullback who has been linked with many of the top Premier League clubs, which is a testament to his resurgence this season.

Out with the old, in with the new I say, especially when you consider that not many English players possess the mercurial talent of Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana, and Luke Shaw.

Radamel Falcao – who in my opinion is one of the best strikers in the world. In what is certainly a winnable fixture, the humid conditions may play a big factor in England’s downfall, and I personally believe England will go on to lose narrowly to Colombia, who have never made it past the group stages of the World Cup. I will be satisfied with a Quarter-Final showing at the World Cup, further would be a bonus and it would really give England a new dimension in the future. Talent wise, there isn’t a country close to Spain or Germany’s calibre, but with the home advantage, and the experience with dealing with the conditions, you can’t count out Brazil. I wouldn’t put a bet on a team to win this World Cup, but if you were to put me on the spot now – I’d say Germany will beat Spain in the final to claim their 4th World Cup.

These youngsters play with no fear, and that also includes the likes of Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Townsend, this new approach could perhaps be the change in philosophy England need.

Do England have a chance? And what will happen in Brazil? In sport, I believe you have to be a realist, and I’d be a liar to say that I have faith in England to repeat their success from 1966, because I’m 95% sure that won’t happen. I do believe we’ll go further if Hodgson opts to plays some of the youngsters as I think it’ll add a new breed of chemistry and confidence. But even if that method is implemented, I can’t see us overcoming the likes of Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and a few others to win the World Cup. Spain and Germany’s second string team will probably beat England’s first team, as they are two countries have an incredible amount of talent in both their senior and U21 squads, unlike England. Coming through the group phase will be an achievement of its own, considering we have Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica in our group. Italy have a knack of grinding results out in the big occasions, and Uruguay have a formidable strikeforce of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, who could both give England a very tough time on June 19th in Sao Paulo. So England have a real banana skin of a group for the 2014 World Cup, and I believe we will come through as runners-up of group D and proceed to the Last 16. That could potentially set up a tough fixture with a rejuvenated Colombia, who have made a rapid rise up the FIFA world rankings in the last 6 months, and their star man is the prolific

The Inbetweeners- The Series vs The Movie

I

n what was undoubtedly one of the funniest sitcoms I have ever watched, The Inbetweeners also had great success in the release of their first movie. In this article, we give our verdict on what we believe was more successful out of the three series or the movie, and whether they should release a fourth series or a movie sequel. The Inbetweeners has really stamped it’s authority on British TV, establishing itself as one of the most gutbustlingly funny sitcoms in the history of comedy if you like. The audacity of some of the quotes is second to none, the unpredictability that is highly anticipated heading in to every new scene, let alone episode! The assortment of predicaments that they got themselves into were quite incredible, and it just seemed that every glimmer of an opportunity they had with a girl, resulted in an absolute disastrous ending. Looking deeply into the three series, I cannot think of any weaknesses that consisted within the show, and all four of the boys had their own styles and traits that made them funny. We have Will – the stubborn, nerdy, committed

newcomer to the group, who surprisingly actually had the most success with girls in terms of quantity. He was often the one who was a victim of supreme humiliation, being renowned for having a number 2 in his first day of school, crawling into dog poo whilst trying to gate-crash a party, being dumped publicly in front of the whole school by his first girlfriend, the list is endless. Secondly we have Jay- a dirty minded, lazy, untrustworthy sexpest who probably had me in tears more than the smell of an onion.

Even the deluded, sex pest that is Jay Cartwright managed to get a girlfriend!

99% of the time, Jay was either lying or talking about sex, but his trademark lies and dirty quotes made him an absolute asset to the show. I previously eluded to Will contagious quote, but Jay’s famous thumbs up and “Friend” in a squeaky voice has certainly become contagious amongst Inbetweeners fans. We also have Neil – a gullible, unintelligent, but loyal member of the

group who often believes Jay’s compulsive lies and looks to him for guidance. However, it these exact reasons to why Neil is such a popular character, and it’s his lack of common sense that lead to him punching a fish to death – which was voted the best moment of The Inbetweeners. He often doesn’t seem to acknowledge his own mistakes, but credit where it is due to Neil, he was the first out of the four to lose his virginity, which the boys see as a big accomplishment. Lastly we have Simon – an irritable, needy, short-tempered character who is prone to spells of hysterical swearing and erratic tantrums, but is well known for his obsession with old friend Carli. Simon’s temperament and at times indecisive choices in situations make him on occasions an incredibly funny character, and these 3 series have seemingly brought the best out of these four boys from Suburbia. Some of the antics of the boys were jaw dropping, and no matter what they did, it would always end up in the same outcome – trouble! The series had everything if you ask me, and the show’s versatility where it could literally create all different types of scenarios and emotions was incredible. So in the build up to the movie, I was incredibly excited and eagerly anticipating what I thought would be the final send-off for the four boys, but I was also a tad edgy to whether the movie could replicate the high standards of the three series. So after watching the movie in a cloudy day in Milton Keynes, I immediately looked to the positives and questioned what major successes were there to the movie. The boys for once actually had somewhat of a fairy-tale ending, where a holiday of constant ups and downs for them ended up in all four of them getting a girlfriend. Even the deluded, sex pest that is Jay Cartwright managed to get a girlfriend! The movie had glimpses where comedy was demonstrated at it’s very best, most memorably the famous dance to Barbra Streisand, conducted mainly by Neil, and was accompanied by Will and Simon. The directors had replicated the unpredictability from the three series into the movie, which I was incredibly impressed by, but I do however have a fair share of criticisms directed towards The Inbetweeners movie. The movie undeniably destroyed Simon’s original persona of being a flamboyant, short-tempered man, and turned into an obsessive, cringe worthy, annoying lover boy where his fascination for Carli went to a whole new level. He perhaps had a couple of funny moments, but I criticise the writers of the movie for focusing too heavily on his love for Carli. His role in the movie was unpopular amongst The Inbetweeners fans, and I believe in that movie we had lost the old Simon, and replaced him with a bit of a loser. The movie for me also failed to replicate the same humour consistently as what the three series

demonstrated, which for me was a big disappointment. The whacky quotes, the outrageously funny antics, they had all gone a bit cold and lost that bit of comical flair which had made it such a successful show. I did really enjoy the movie and I do in fact have it on DVD, but do I believe it replicated the success of the series? No. Which brings me to my final question, should they release a fourth series or a movie sequel? It has however been confirmed that a movie sequel will be released in the summer where the boys go out to Australia, but I think they should have opted for a fourth series. A movie often focuses on one main storyline, which I don’t believe is beneficial for a show such as The Inbetweeners. A series would allow the boys to find that spark back, where they could once again fall victim to all different types of shenanigans, and perhaps revitalize the unique humour that consisted within the show.
