‘I am London Based Architect and Interior Designer with 20 years experience in the trade. I am a founder of STUDIOAida Architecture and Interior Design Company. I was always interested in creating something. By Aida Bratović
What are the steps in the design process, and how are they organized? Read, listen, see, go to exhibitions go to movies, expose yourself to many influences and have an open mind, inspiration comes from unlikely sources. Then consider carefully the practical and technical side of every project; it is not enough just to be beautiful it must work. Architecture is real and practical, somebody will live there, there are many rules and regulation to consider, that is what sets it apart from other design fractions and that is why one must study many years to become an architect.
What do you need to consider when designing? How do you keep up with industry changes? You need to think who will be using your building, house, room. Imagine yourself in their shoes. We read many professional magazines, go to talks, seminars, CPDs, and visit new building. One must be informed and keep up with new trends, technologies and regulations. It opens a world for you, learning about the history of art and design and going through a process of creating something to make somebody life better and easier. For example, Children perform better in well designed classrooms etc.
Would you recommend interior and architecture to young people? If yes, how would you encourage young students or younger generation to consider architecture and interior design? And would work experience or any kind of job related, be useful for young students to do before applying for the course? Always, despite long hours and pay less than we think we deserve, it is very rewarding beautiful profession, seeing your design rise from a paper drawing to a building is priceless. It opens a world for you, learning about the history of art and design and going through a process of creating something to make somebody life better and easier. For example, Children perform better in well designed classrooms etc. It is very important to have insight into real office life and see how it works and what is involved, before and during one’s study What are the best possible techniques and materials to design your own room? Imagine what happens when you wake up, what do you see first, what do you touch first, where is the window, can you see it from the bed, how to maximize the space, how to optimize the light, how to organize the storage …. IKEA has very good affordable design, even Ilsa Crawford has a line in IKEA, mix it with scrap yard finds and second hand pieces, experiment with colours, white is not the only option, sometime small room look better if you paint one wall dark, look at eBay for cheap finds, swap things with friends.
