This Week on Proud Africa’s CONFIDENCE page...

We interviewed our special east African model

Laila Munamay:

What are your thoughts about racism and discrimination on east Africans? It’s terrible in general, of course. Seeing as I left Sudan only 4 years ago, I found it quite difficult to understand the ‘fashion’ in London. I had no idea what to wear, and when I thought I looked good, I would be laughed at and whispered about by many people. I became very insecure and cautious of what I was wearing because of this. But then one day, I thought what the hell! Why should I let people put me down and judge me because of my traditional Sudanese clothing? So I started taking everything on the chin, and then eventually, I stopped caring, because if you think about it...my clothing are what make me, well ME!

What country are you from? WOW, where do I start? Well my mother is Somalia but she was born and raised in Kenya, so I consider myself mixed with both. My father is from Sudan, but his granddad is quarter Eritrean! So I have quite a mix of East African countries L-O-L!

How and why did you become a model? Well...I have always loved the thought of modelling. I LOVE THE SPOTLIGHT! I was actually approached by friendly Ethiopian gentlemen, who worked for a modelling agency and was convinced that I could become an extremely successful model! At first I refused, but after giving it some thought, I considered it was a way to 1) Put myself out there and experience new things 2) Opportunity to get noticed and a way to meet new people & 3) To become independent!

When did you move to London?

I moved to London 4 years ago, although I wasn’t familiar with the country, I took myself out of my comfort zone and made it my goal to meet new people. This was hard at first, because I was very shy and had a strong Arabic accent. However, it worked out eventually, as I managed to make some friends, which slowly, but surely, expanded!

What advice would you give to young East Africans experiencing discrimination? Embrace where you are from! Show them how blessed you are to be from East Africa! As the background and history behind it is absolutely extraordinary. Hold your head up high, be proud of who are you, and where you come from! I stayed positive during being discriminated against at school and well...look at me now! Just believe in yourself kids and don’t listen to the haters!
