SHARED EXPERIENCES

B Y A N Y M E A S U R E Wolf Trap Foundation’s 2015 season was a tremendous success, filled with record-breaking milestones and accomplishments. It’s an exciting time to be associated with Wolf Trap, and through the unwavering support of Wolf Trap Foundation’s donors and patrons, we are able to continue to refresh the institution while connecting with our audiences and patrons. Thank you. Your willingness and passion for the arts help make the Wolf Trap experience more rich and more sought after with each passing year.

Last year we saw successes across the spectrum of the Foundation’s activities, all furthering our goals of celebrating music in all its varied forms, while cultivating the next generation through the arts. Our performance series at the Filene Center was our strongest in years, with more than 20 sold-out shows and 40 artists making their Wolf Trap debuts, and The Barns at Wolf Trap continues to be a premier destination for uniquely intimate concerts. Wolf Trap Opera mounted its most ambitious season ever, and our renowned education programs went from strength to strength, developing new national and international partnerships while deepening our commitment to the Metro area and throughout Virginia.

Please know that this passionate work would not be possible without you and your generous contributions. We look forward to continued shared experiences with you at Wolf Trap.

In January, the Foundation announced the results of a four-year, independent study showing that as a result of Wolf Trap’s Early STEM/Arts education programs, children are performing better in math. Funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the research confirms that Wolf Trap’s arts-integrated model is an effective teaching and learning method. Further

Held at the Center for Education, Wolf Trap Opera’s First Look brought together some of the Foundation’s most devoted opera fans for a behind-the-scenes look at the 2015 opera season. Kim Witman, Senior Director of Wolf Trap Opera and Classical Programming, shared stories from the company’s nationwide audition tour, the lineup of summer operas, and the roster of singers who would be performing in them.

February

The Barns welcomed an array of inspiring artists for its 2014–2015 season. Among the 78 performances, several acts made their Barns debuts including Lee Ann Womack, Black Violin, and Art Garfunkel.

Under the strategic leadership of Akua Kouyate-Tate, Wolf Trap’s Senior Director of Education, the Foundation’s arts-integrated STEM programs have been incorporated in select schools in communities nationwide. For her contributions to early childhood education and her leadership in developing Wolf Trap’s arts-integrated science, technology, engineering, and math programs, Akua was honored with the K-12 Promotion of Education Award at the 2015 Black Engineer of the Year Award STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C. Nominated by U.S. Air Force General (Ret.) Lester Lyles, a Wolf Trap Foundation Board member and BEYA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Akua was presented the award by General Lyles at BEYA STEM’s gala award ceremony. March Record Membership: Wolf Trap Foundation membership grew 11% this year, setting a record of more than 8,600 individual members, of which 28% were first-time members. World-class artists in every genre, along with Wolf Trap’s one-of-a-kind experience and exclusive benefits, encourage fans to become members and support the power of the arts in their community. 2015’s spring presale set another record for the Foundation, with members purchasing nearly 27,000 tickets before the general public.

April Wolf Trap’s 2015 Legacy Circle Dinner welcomed more than 100 members who have committed to securing the Foundation’s arts and education programs through future estate gifts. The evening included a performance by the Washington-Lee High School Jazz Ensemble, under the leadership of Director of Bands Alex Robinson. Robinson was among six local public school educators who received a 2014–2015 Wolf Trap Grant for High School Performing Arts Teachers. These grants enable local teachers to develop new and innovative performing arts programs at local high schools, which would not be possible without Wolf Trap’s financial support. Grant recipients attending the Legacy Circle Dinner included (left to right) My-Van Nguyen of Dominion High School in Loudoun County, VA, Alex Robinson, and Thomasena Allen and Gregory Lewis of School Without Walls in Washington, D.C.

2015 Leadership Dinner Wolf Trap Foundation honored its most generous individual philanthropists from the past year at a magnificent seated dinner held at The Barns at Wolf Trap on April 7. The intimate and exclusive Leadership Dinner brought together individual donors who help bring Wolf Trap’s mission to life, and to whom the Foundation is deeply thankful.

Wolf Trap members ventured to the City of Brotherly Love during the Foundation’s first-ever opera weekend excursion. Twenty-five members, along with President and CEO Arvind Manocha and Senior Director of Wolf Trap Opera and Classical Programming Kim Witman, explored Philadelphia’s classical music and cultural scene. In addition to receiving a private, specialized tour of the Barnes Foundation before it opened to the public, the group saw Opera Philadelphia’s Don Carlo at the Academy of Music. Following the performance, the group met backstage with cast members and Wolf Trap Opera alumni Eric Owens and Michelle DeYoung.

May

Indian megastar A.R. Rahman arrived at Wolf Trap at the start of the Summer 2015 Filene Center season. His sold-out debut ranks as the highest grossing show in Wolf Trap history and was preceded by a special pre-performance dinner on the Associates Deck. Attended by 150 guests—including His Excellency Arun Kumar Singh, the Ambassador of India, A.R. Rahman, Arvind Manocha, and His Excellency Arun Kumar Singh.

and Mrs. Maina C. Singh—the event included a surprise appearance by A.R. Rahman. The dinner raised $140,000 in support of the Foundation’s arts and education programs.

In May, four new members were elected to the Wolf Trap Foundation Board of Directors (left to right): Virginia McGehee Friend, Anne R. Kline, David H. Langstaff, and Mark G. Mykityshyn.

June The National Symphony Orchestra season was a huge success, with repertoire spanning Tchaikovsky to Broadway to Pokémon. Renowned pianist Emanuel Ax made his Wolf Trap debut, and Sarah Chang, recognized as one of the world’s great violinists, brought an astonishing number of new patrons to Wolf Trap.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the time-travel classic Back to the Future, the National Symphony Orchestra performed the score live with an HD showing of the film at the Filene Center. Packed with an additional 15 minutes of new music from composer Alan Silvestri, the event featured DeLoreans on site, as well as several special guests; Silvestri joined actress Lea Thompson and conductor Emil de Cou for a near-capacity

Wolf Trap’s summer interns met with U.S. Senators and members of Congress in Washington, D.C. for Intern Day on the Hill. The young professionals spoke with the lead staffer for the Congressional Arts Caucus, visited historic sites, and attended meetings with representatives from all around the country. During this visit, interns practiced their arts advocacy and communication skills, while promoting a wider awareness of the Foundation’s many programs. June Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods welcomed more than 18,000 patrons to its family-friendly performances. In a season spanning 32 shows, 12 acts made their Wolf Trap debuts, including Story Pirates—the hugely popular sketch comedy troupe that transforms children’s original stories into hilarious musicals. The Alphabet Rockers were another smash hit, performing energetic hip-hop music and showing young dancers how to recreate their fun dance moves after the show. For the first time in nearly 30 years, The Marriage of Figaro returned to The Barns. The new production featured eight Filene Young Artists and three Studio Artists who garnered rave reviews during its sold-out run: “Mozart can take some credit for the rapt audience attention and the guffaws that peppered the three hours of the Wolf Trap Opera’s opening-night performance of The Marriage of Figaro at The Barns on Friday but just some. The production itself floated on just the right balance of energy and delicacy, slapstick and pathos, and on the intimacy of a small stage and a chamber-size hall.” — The Washington Post

July

Showcasing and promoting diverse artistry and culture, Wolf Trap welcomed National Ballet of China to the Filene Center. The premier Chinese ballet company, accompanied by the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, performed a contemporary version of The Peony Pavilion—one of the most famous love stories in Chinese literature.

On the occasion of her 30th year with Wolf Trap Opera, The Washington Post celebrated Kim Witman—Senior Director of Wolf Trap Opera and Classical Programming—in a feature story. From beginning her opera career at Wolf Trap in the 1980s to now leading the company, the Post described her impact as a “secret weapon” in the classical world. Her passion and expertise have shaped Wolf Trap Opera into the renowned, one-of-a-kind company and training program that it is today.

Wolf Trap patrons ventured into ancient Egypt for Aida in Concert at the Filene Center, featuring Wolf Trap Opera alumni who have flourishing, international careers. Marjorie Owens, Michelle DeYoung, Carl Tanner, and Scott Hendricks were accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington Chorus. This concert was the first complete opera performed by WTO alumni in the company’s history.

July Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts returned to Singapore in July. Collaborating with the National Arts Council and Early Childhood Development Agency, Wolf Trap staff and Teaching Artists trained local artists and educators on how to incorporate the arts into their instructional curriculum. Using music, dance, and drama, these trainings aligned with specific learning areas from the Singapore Curriculum Framework. As a thank you for their generous support and dedication to the Foundation, members from Wolf Trap’s Board of Directors and Associates Board, as well as Board alumni, were invited to enjoy a special dinner on the Associates Deck. The annual Joint Board and Alumni Dinner was followed by a dazzling concert featuring Broadway star Audra McDonald with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Madama Butterfly, Puccini’s heartbreaking masterpiece, hit the Filene Center stage in a new, single-night production. Fully staged and costumed, the opera featured Filene Young Artists and Studio Artists accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra and Choral Arts. Featuring new scenic and video projection designs, this was the most extensive Operascape production Wolf Trap Opera has created. November December Wolf Trap announced its intention to commit more than $1 million to early childhood education in 2016, joining a coalition of national corporations, nonprofits, policymakers, and business leaders dedicated to strengthening young children’s education and social and economic outcomes. The Invest in US event marked the one-year anniversary of the White House Summit on Early Childhood Education. The Foundation’s commitment supports the expansion of Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, ensuring that more children in more communities have access to Wolf Trap’s proven arts-integrated teaching methods. Wolf Trap’s Arvind Manocha joined Valerie Jarrett (Senior Advisor to the President), Roberto J. Rodriguez (White House Deputy Assistant for Education), John B. King, Jr. (Acting Secretary of Education), and others at the Invest in US event.

Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty hit the Filene Center stage with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band and 11 local vocal groups for Wolf Trap’s Annual Holiday Sing-A-Long. A tradition that began in 1968 by Wolf Trap Founder Catherine Filene Shouse, the free community event included a Toys for Tots collection and thousands of joyful patrons getting into the holiday spirit with festive music.

Performances weren’t the only events selling out this year. Wolf Trap members traveled to the Empire City to enjoy a weekend full of arts and culture, including Tony Awardwinning Broadway performances of An American in Paris and Something Rotten, as well as a private walking tour of Tribeca and fine dining in the Big Apple.
