Every time the curtain rises, the impact of the arts is made clear. In this exceptional year of milestones, the impact of our community took center stage. Together, we celebrated the 100th birthday of the National Park Service and set new standards for institutional support through recordbreaking philanthropy. On stage, legendary artists, explosive debuts, and thrilling premieres inspired us. And in classrooms across the country, more children in more communities are better prepared for success in school thanks to the expansion of our groundbreaking early childhood programs. The accomplishments of 2016 were made possible, in large part, through the collective contributions of a thriving community of artists, patrons, donors, partners, educators, and many others. We are united

Each year, Wolf Trap presents an incredibly diverse slate of artists, in genres ranging from rock to pop, classical to Broadway, country to hip-hop. In 2016, some of the biggest names in music graced the stages of the Filene Center and The Barns, and a multitude of legendary artists were added to the list of Wolf Trap debuts. Sufjan Stevens presented a kaleidoscopic feast for the senses. Donning fantastical feathered wings and flanked by vibrantly attired

backup singers, the neon-bedecked indie artist brought thousands of enthusiastic fans to their feet.

Patti LuPone made opening week at The Barns shine as bright as the Great White Way. Wolf Trap celebrated the Centennial of the National Park Service with concerts by debut artist Ricky Martin and longtime favorite Bonnie Raitt. The summer season welcomed a host of artists to the Filene Center stage for the first time, including Eagles front man Don Henley, global pop star Meghan Trainor, and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;90s hip-hop trailblazers Salt-N-Pepa. The new acts brought new visitors to the Park, like the legions of young fans who heard 27-year-old retro soul singer Leon Bridges throw down like the Motown and Stax stars of the 1960s. The two sold-out shows that marked the debut of Paul Simon were also potentially his Wolf Trap swan song, as he spoke to The New York Times of the possibility of retiring from show business. In the next week, the Filene Center hosted Indian megastar Asha Bhosle and Bob Dylan, who in the fall became the first musician to win the Nobel Prize in literature.

COMMITMENT TO CLASSICAL ARTS Since Wolf Trap’s opening day in 1971, opera, symphony, dance, and chamber music have been central to the Foundation’s mission. That tradition continues with Wolf Trap’s artistic partner of longest standing, the National Symphony Orchestra, as well as with Chamber Music at The Barns and Wolf Trap Opera’s ongoing commitment to identifying, developing, and showcasing the best young talent in the country. 4 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

American Ballet Theatre made a triumphant return to Wolf Trap after more than three decades. The three-night engagement of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet brought drama and pageantry to the Filene Center stage. Benjamin Britten’s thought-provoking The Rape of Lucretia opened the summer opera season. The Lucretia Project, a comprehensive slate of free community programs, allowed patrons to examine the production’s challenging themes through the lenses of drama, music, theology, and visual art. Through March 2017, view the Wolf Trap Opera production at wolftrap.org/streaming. Designed and directed by Janni Younge of the Handspring Puppet Company and War Horse fame, The Firebird reimagined Stravinsky’s masterpiece. For this ambitious co-commission, Wolf Trap Foundation partnered with a roster of colleagues that included the Ravinia Festival and the Hollywood Bowl. Wolf Trap Opera’s one-night-only Filene Center production of La bohème set Puccini’s tale of young artists and lovers amid the social and political chaos of the closing months of World War I. The acclaimed Emerson String Quartet are the Artistic Advisors for the 20th anniversary season of Chamber Music at The Barns. Featuring both internationally recognized artists and up-andcoming talent, the series takes full advantage of a venue that was tailor-made for chamber music. Nearly three decades after his Wolf Trap debut, renowned bass-baritone Alan Held returned as the 2016 Artist in Residence to mentor the next generation of singers. He and WTO artists appeared in an NSO concert celebrating the rich cultural heritage of America’s National Parks.

Arts for All: It’s a value that guides much of Wolf Trap’s work. Through accessibility initiatives and community programming, Wolf Trap served up top-tier arts experiences to a wider and more diverse audience than ever before. Young At Arts, a new accessibility initiative, provided thousands of free youth tickets to select Filene Center performances. American Ballet Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet, Riverdance, and a concert by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis were just

a few of the events that invited families to introduce their children to the performing arts. The program creates access points and affordable opportunities for families to connect with each other and with arts experiences.

With her historic rise to the top of her art form, Misty Copeland drew countless new fans to ballet. The American Ballet Theatre prima ballerina welcomed students from Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and Turnaround Arts to Wolf Trap for a Romeo and Juliet dress rehearsal and special meet-and-greet. Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods entertained and educated young children with a slate of offerings that included 14 Wolf Trap debuts, among them Seattle “kindie rock” group The Not-Its! and spirited streetdance crew FLY Dance Company. The season kicked off with a performance by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb, who encouraged youngsters to sing along with enthusiastic renditions of camp songs and nursery rhymes—and took their folks back 20 years with her hit song “Stay (I Missed You).” Throughout the season, Wolf Trap provided community-service tickets to nonprofits working with children with disabilities and children who are economically disadvantaged. Two free concerts by “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band bookend every Filene Center season. At Summer Blast Off! patriotic music is the order of the day, from John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” to this year’s world premiere of David DeBoor Canfield’s “Yankee Doodle Fanfareture.” Accessible familyfriendly programming continues in the winter, when thousands of singers bundle up against the cold for the Holiday Sing-A-Long, which features local vocal groups.

EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION

The arts move us, inspiring joy and sparking creativity. The arts also have the ability to teach, enabling learning and leaving impressions on young people that will last a lifetime. Through arts education and community outreach, Wolf Trap is introducing the next generation to the power of the performing arts.

In the fall, the Wolf Trap storefront opened at Junior Achievement Finance Park Fairfax County. The center hosts immersive budgeting simulations that introduce every eighth-grader in Fairfax County Public Schools (more than 14,000 per year) to real-life scenarios. “Many local students grow up coming to Wolf Trap, and as they learn to make smart financial decisions, we hope they see the arts as a vital part of our community landscape, and a good investment of their entertainment dollars,” said Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha. In an effort to address the crucial need for diversity within arts administration, Wolf Trap offers a Multicultural Diversity Initiative and an Economic Diversity Initiative. In 2016, over half of the 25 summer interns participated in at least one of these programs. The internship program is newly supported in part by the Rubenstein Next Generation Initiative. Wolf Trap Institute welcomed its latest affiliate, theArtsFund of San Antonio, in the spring. Dr. Libby Doggett, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Early Learning, U.S. Dept. of Education, and Rep. Lloyd Doggett (Texas) joined Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha in announcing the partnership with theArtsFund, a San Antonio nonprofit dedicated to using the arts to bridge achievement gaps.

IT’S WORKING wrote The Washington Post, reporting on new analysis by American Institutes for Research that showed that one Wolf Trap Institute model program significantly improved students’ math achievement. In fact, children in Wolf Trap classrooms gained 26–34 days, or up to 1.7 months, of additional math learning.

The Congressional Arts Caucus invited leaders from Wolf Trap Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids to a briefing and performance. Titled The Importance of the Arts in a Well-Rounded Education, the presentation emphasized the need to support arts education at the local, state, and federal levels.

Wolf Trap Foundation is strengthened by the collective and individual contributions of the organization’s leadership. Chairman Daniel D’Aniello and President and CEO Arvind Manocha hosted an elegant Leadership Dinner at The Barns to thank and honor the Foundation’s top individual philanthropists. Former Wolf Trap Foundation Board of Directors and Associates Board members reconnected at a Joint Board Alumni Gathering in the winter. In the summer, more

than 100 current and former Board leaders gathered for the Annual Joint Board and Alumni Dinner, celebrating Wolf Trap’s decadeslong tradition of engagement and support. The event included a shared expression of gratitude and remembrance for two exceptional Wolf Trap champions—former Foundation Board Chairs Mary H. Beggs and Earle C. Williams (also Director Emeritus)—whose

passion for the performing arts, commitment to education, and love of community endure through their many contributions and accomplishments.

Dr. Shashikant “Shashi” Gupta and Mrs. Margaret Gupta contributed $1 million to Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts. The largest individual philanthropic gift in the 35-year history of the Institute, it supports Wolf Trap’s nationally recognized program that delivers artsintegrated education opportunities to 60,000 teachers, parents, caregivers, and students annually. Through her philanthropy, Catherine Filene Shouse created the first and only National Park dedicated to the performing arts. Through its support of Wolf Trap’s programming, the Filene Foundation continues the vital legacy of Mrs. Shouse, who envisioned a unique place where the arts are enjoyed in harmony with nature. More than 20 Filene family members traveled from both coasts to tour the grounds and meet with Wolf Trap leadership. Washington Business Journal honored Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha as one of Washington’s Top Minority Business Leaders. The award recognizes the region’s leaders for their professional accomplishments, contributions to community, and philanthropy.

The success of Wolf Trap Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programs and outreach is made possible only by organizations and individuals whose philanthropic dedication propels the organization toward greater community impact. Under a glittering canopy of lights and surrounded by lush greenery and stunning imagery of national parklands, more than 800 guests celebrated the National Park Service Centennial at the Wolf Trap Ball.

Attracting a diverse guest list of philanthropic, business, political, and cultural leaders, the Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest annual fundraiser generated a record-breaking $1.6 million in support. The Honorable Sally Jewell

served as Honorary Chair, and Fred and Kim Humphries and Tim and Ann Keating were the co-chairs of the Ball. The evening kicked off with a stunning patriotic medley sung by Wolf Trap Opera alumna and star mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves.

Ball guest speaker Mrs. Laura Bush, Honorary Co-chair of the National Park Service’s Centennial Celebration and former Honorary Chair of Wolf Trap Foundation, emphasized the special role that Wolf Trap and the National Park Service play in America’s cultural heritage. Much to the surprise of delighted guests, former President George W. Bush appeared on stage to introduce his wife. The 2016 Wolf Trap Ball Lead Sponsors were Daniel and Gayle D’Aniello, with The Boeing Company and Microsoft as Presenting Sponsors. Margaret and Shashi Gupta and Suzy and Bob Pence served as Host Sponsors. Diamondlevel Sponsors included Hillary and Tom Baltimore, Christina and Gary Mather, KPMG, MicroStrategy, PwC, SunTrust, and USAA.

A springtime tradition, Wine at Wolf Trap dazzled guests with a five-course plated dinner with wine pairings and live entertainment that highlighted the upcoming 2016 summer season. Fall welcomed the first-ever Bourbon, Bowties, and Blues fundraiser. The event offered guests bourbon tastings, bourbon-inspired barbecue, and music by one of D.C.’s best blues bands, Moonshine Society. These two events at The Barns raised more than $200,000 for Wolf Trap Foundation’s arts and education programs. More than 120 donors and guests enjoyed the annual Legacy Circle Dinner, which honors those who have included Wolf Trap Foundation
