Inclusion has been a guiding principle of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts from the beginning. We are mindful of our responsibility to the hundreds of thousands of patrons we welcome every year to this national treasure that is Wolf Trap. The spectacular array of artists this year at the Filene Center, Children’s Theatre-in-theWoods, and The Barns included important debuts and returning Wolf Trap favorites. We proudly introduced new patron amenities, including state-of-the-art video screens at the Filene Center and a new atrium and upgraded facilities at The Barns. Along the way our education programs continued to expand, both locally and across the country, while Wolf Trap Opera tackled one of its most ambitious seasons ever. 2018 was a year to remember. Philanthropy has been the backbone of Wolf Trap since its inception. Founder Catherine Filene Shouse’s original gifts have been enhanced by the more than 9,000 members and partners who contribute every year to the success of Wolf Trap. Support from our community and more than 400,000 visitors, combined with the hard work of the Foundation staff, National Park Service, and Wolf Trap Foundation Board of Directors,
fueled the success of our artistic and education programs in 2018. The work we do at Wolf Trap Foundation could not be done without the community, and we continually strive to bring to it our very best. Please enjoy this 2018 Annual Report knowing how much we appreciate our community of friends and stakeholders. Without you, these milestone moments and accomplishments would not have been possible.

1 Celebration performance full of icons from the worlds of musical theater, dance, and music. On a magical Friday night, the National Symphony Orchestra and Wolf Trap Opera artists were joined by superstars Misty Copeland, George Takei, Tony Yazbeck, The Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, Paquito D’Rivera, and Erin Morley, who performed selections from Bernstein’s most famous works. The evening was conducted by Bernstein protégé Michael Barrett and narrated by Bernstein’s youngest daughter Nina Bernstein-Simmons. A special treat this year, a quartet of Wolf Trap Opera alumni—now internationally renowned singers—joined the National Symphony Orchestra for an exhilarating performance of The Best of Wagner’s Ring. Former Filene Artists, Christine Goerke, Simon O’Neill, Alan Held, and Eric Owens wowed the crowd with an evening they created just for Wolf Trap. Goerke, 2018 Filene Artist in Residence, also returned to offer a public master class and work with Wolf Trap Opera artists on artistic and career preparation. In the fall, Wolf Trap welcomed pianist, educator, and cultural entrepreneur Wu Han as the 2018-2020 Artistic Advisor for Chamber Music at The Barns. Along with renowned cellist David Finckel, Wu Han kicked off a spectacular 2018-2019 season in November with a stunning soldout concert of Beethoven’s complete cello sonatas as part of the Founder’s Day Celebration.

1 REACHING FAR WITH CREATIVITY CONNECTS In 2018, Wolf Trap completed its two-year Creativity Connects: Arts in Early Learning project. The project aimed to engage communities in meaningful conversations about the effectiveness of early childhood arts integration and create actionable plans to incorporate the arts into classrooms. Over a two-year period, Wolf Trap traveled to Seattle, Milwaukee, Charleston, Denver, and Los Angeles, to accomplish key project initiatives in each city including: • Host free one-day symposia for community educators, artists, administrators, business and government leaders, and other arts and early education professionals, to spark dialogue about the power of the arts in early childhood education. • Conduct in-classroom residencies with Wolf Trap Teaching Artists, where community stakeholders could see the work in action. • Develop issue briefs that dive into key issues identified in each community, including STEM, inclusion, language development and literacy, and social/emotional development. • Award artist fellowships to local community artists to produce an original piece focused on the spirit of arts and early learning.

2 INTRODUCING GREATER RICHMOND WOLF TRAP Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts welcomed its 19th affiliate Greater Richmond Wolf Trap. At an October press conference announcing the new partnership held at Martin Luther King Jr. Preschool Center in Richmond, Wolf Trap was joined by First Lady of Virginia Pamela Northam, city of Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney, Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools Jason Kamras, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. James Lane. Greater Richmond Wolf Trap will focus on enhancing literacy in schools and early childhood centers in Richmond and surrounding counties. In addition to the literacy-based work of Greater Richmond Wolf Trap, teaching artists from Wolf Trap’s national office will continue to provide services in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in Richmond through its Early STEM/Arts program. The newest Wolf Trap affiliate is operated out of the Richmond Performing Arts Alliance, a nonprofit organization whose performing arts and arts education programs serve children of all ages in the Richmond community.
PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC

Wolf Trap continues to work closely with PBS and its Boston member station WGBH to develop episodes of its hit show Pinkalicious & Peterrific, focusing on the performing arts. During the annual Television Critics Association Press Tour, Wolf Trap’s Vice President of Education Akua Kouyate-Tate joined producer Dorthea Gillim, blues artist Vaneese Thomas, and the voice of Pinkalicious Kayla Erickson, to provide insights into the show’s arts-based episodes.
INSPIRING HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS TEACHERS This year, Wolf Trap awarded seven $5,000 grants to high school performing arts teachers in Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun counties in Virginia; Prince George’s County in Maryland; and the District of Columbia—the most grant dollars awarded in the program’s history. These grants help teachers develop and create innovative projects with their students, many of which result in original productions and commissions. WOLF TRAP FOUNDATION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS 11

RE IMAGINE
WOLF TRAP REVITALIZED Kicking off the summer during opening weekend with The Washington Ballet’s debut of Giselle, patrons were ecstatic to get a look at the new dynamic IMAG screens at the Filene Center. For concertgoers watching from the lawn and balcony, the introduction of five new high-definition LED screens offered new perspectives and created a larger-than-life experience of performers on the stage. The Barns also received its own refresh over the summer—made possible by Dan and Gayle D’Aniello—complete with a glass enclosed atrium, a new convenient entrance, refreshed amenities, and even a coat of warm red paint on the exterior. Created by design firm Gensler and general contractor L.F. Jennings, the new atrium emphasizes a connection between modern features and The Barns’ historic essence.

Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods continued to be a much-loved community destination with 31 performances throughout the summer. More than 13,000 children, families, and caregivers traveled across the Meadow and over the stream to Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods this summer to watch the best children’s artists in folk, kindie-rock, storytelling, theater, puppetry, and dance. Wolf Trap’s Internship and Apprenticeship program thrived this year, with 27 interns and 11 apprentices from 23 universities, who learned new skills in education, development, communications, IT, production, and more. In October Wolf Trap was recognized with the 2018 Arts Impact Award during the ARTSFAIRFAX Awards luncheon. Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO, Arvind Manocha, accepted the award, which was presented to the Foundation in honor of its significant role as a leading arts presenter, bringing world-renowned artists to Northern Virginia for nearly 50 years, and for its extraordinary leadership in early childhood education.

Wolf Trap also stepped up its digital presence in 2018 and welcomed more than 1.6 million unique visitors to its website. On social media, Wolf Trap celebrated its 100,000th Facebook follower and reached more than 16,500 Instagram followers.
RELAX & REJUVENATE This year, Wolf Trap enhanced the pre-performance experience, thanks to a partnership with Michelin-starred Chef José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup. Wolf Trap and ThinkFoodGroup launched OVATIONS by America Eats at the start of the summer. Before a performance, patrons dined al fresco or on prepared picnics, enjoying Chef José’s take on American classics. With the finest ingredients, Chef José honored local and regional flavors inspired by some of the country’s most historic dishes and drinks. Many tasty treats found at Wolf Trap Concessions this year were locally sourced, such as soft-serve ice cream from Baltimore, MD, and small-batch tortilla chips from the familyowned Abuelita Mexican Foods in Manassas, VA. Concessions also introduced new original items like a USDA Prime Mac and Cheese Burger, Chicken & Belgian Waffle with Spicy Maple Syrup, Edamame & Cashew Noodle Bowl, and Colossal Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich. And of course, the Wolf Trap Summer Ale created by Vienna’s own Caboose Brewery made an appearance again alongside a newly designed Pavilion Cup. Always striving to improve audience experiences, patrons attending select National Symphony Orchestra performances received an extra treat. Coinciding with Discovery’s Shark Week, patrons were given shark fin hats to wear during Jaws in Concert. Even in a torrential downpour, audiences could not stop smiling for selfies with their shark hats. For Casino Royale in Concert, Aston Martin D.C. and Madame Tussauds joined in the fun by offering patrons a chance to take photos with an Aston Martin DB5 and a wax figure of James Bond.

RE CONNECT
1 REJOICE & CELEBRATE 2018 was a banner year for Wolf Trap Foundation’s philanthropy program, with more than $12 million raised in support of arts and education activities. Wolf Trap thanks all of the donors and partners whose contributions make the Foundation’s programs thrive, year after year. The most successful fundraising event in Wolf Trap Foundation’s history, the 2018 Wolf Trap Ball was held in partnership with the British Embassy. Nearly 800 guests and 60 corporate partners came together to celebrate the close of a stellar summer season and raise $1.7 million in support of Wolf Trap’s programs. Held onstage at the Filene Center, the Ball honored the arts and culture of England. His Excellency Sir Kim Darroch KCMG, British Ambassador to the United States, and Lady Darroch served as Honorary Hosts for the evening. The Ball was co-chaired by Teresa Carlson and Don and Angela Irwin. Ball guests included philanthropic and business leaders, members of the U.S. Congress, and state and local governments: former Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe; U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA), U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-AK), as well as Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring and Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax; and several members of the Virginia General Assembly. In addition to Ambassador Darroch, guests included leadership from the Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Thailand. Upon entering the Ball, guests saw the Filene Center stage, one of the largest in the nation, transformed with magnificent décor and images of the Union Jack, bustling streetscapes, and the iconic London Eye. Guests were immersed in the sophistication and spirit of Great Britain through authentic fare by Design Cuisine including savory scones and biscuits, fish and chips, grilled lamb, and Yorkshire pudding. Entertainment for the evening began with performances by Wolf Trap Opera alumni Alexander McKissick and Alexandra Nowakowski. Following dinner, hundreds of guests took to the dance floor in “The Wolf and the Trap Pub” to enjoy new wave British music performed by The Legwarmers. 16 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

3 Fundraisers at The Barns also reached new heights in 2018, raising more than $300,000. More than 150 guests enjoyed the 10th annual Wine at Wolf Trap in March, a tasting of extraordinary wines perfectly paired with cuisine catered by José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup, and curated by Master Sommelier Andy Myers. The event raised more than $160,000 for Wolf Trap Foundation’s arts and education programs. Donors were treated to six rare wines expertly chosen to accompany the delicious Americana themed five-course meal, and poured tableside by the nation’s top Master Sommeliers. Dancing on The Barns’ stage with music spun by DJ Oz rounded out the festive evening. The third annual Bourbon and Bubbles in November marked the opening of the newly renovated Barns and its gorgeous, new atrium. More than 300 guests sampled 30 hand-picked bourbons and a dozen top sparkling wines and champagnes. Live music by Bobby Thompson and gourmet southern fare accompanied the evening, and a pop-up speakeasy and hand-rolled cigars were welcome event additions.
RECOGNIZING MEMBERS More than 120 members of the Catherine Filene Shouse Legacy Circle gathered in May to celebrate their shared commitment to the future of Wolf Trap Foundation at the Annual Legacy Circle Dinner at The Barns. Filene Artist alumnus Timothy Bruno and returning Filene Artist Madison Leonard, along with Coaching Fellow Christopher Koelzer, performed for guests. Lee Anne Myslewski, Director of Artistic Administration for Wolf Trap Opera and Classical Programming, shared highlights from the upcoming season.

In July, nearly 150 Wolf Trap members came together to celebrate a shared connection of longtime involvement. An Evening of Thanks was a special dinner uniting Wolf Trap’s loyal friends who are current members and were also members in 1989—nearly 30 years ago. Host Arvind Manocha, Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO, thanked members stating, “You have spent a generation being involved at Wolf Trap and participating in all the different activities of the Wolf Trap Foundation. Because of that, we are able to continue to grow, to be stronger, and to be ambitious.” He went on to say, “You represent the very ideals that Mrs. Shouse had in mind when founding Wolf Trap: community, philanthropy, dedication to arts, arts education, nature, and most importantly, to longevity.” Following dinner, guests attended a magnificent performance, Bernstein at 100: A Celebration.
