2009 Season Preview A new status, a new conference and a new expectation for Utah Valley soccer as the Wolverines look to build on their most successful season ever. Head coach Brent Anderson led his club to a school-record 11-7-1 mark in 2008 and enters his fourth year at the helm this fall. In addition to ditching provisional status, UVU will begin play in the Great West Conference with the first conference championship held in early November in Newark, New Jersey. “As people have asked how the team is going to be, I’m usually pretty guarded. But this year I’m really optimistic,” said Anderson. “The seniors have been here for four years and they know what is expected of them, they know how to push the underclassmen.” “I’m really excited to have them lead this team and to see what they can do. They know that this is a special season. We have full Division I status. We have a new conference to play in. The girls know what it takes to be conference champions and what it takes to be undefeated in conference. I think when they look at this season they know that it can be something special.” The Wolverines return 18 letterwinners and seven starters from last season’s squad that finished a perfect 5-0 during the United Soccer Conference regular season. Missing from the list of returners are keeper Mallory Schott, who started every game and played nearly every minute in goal, and four-year starter Jenni Clough, who holds nearly every offensive record at UVU. The Wolverines do return several key players on both sides of the ball including junior forward Katey Turner, who led the Wolverines with seven goals and finished with 19 points, and did it all on a torn ACL. Turner, a two-time Great West Conference Player of the Week, scored all seven of her goals during a seven-game late-season stretch.

“We lost some key players but we’re still pretty optimistic about the class we have returning. Katey has been a consistent goal-scorer during her first two years. She’s worked very hard this summer,” Anderson said. “Jaime Lyons will fit into the scoring picture as well. Kelly Vide, who we didn’t have at all last year, is going to be out there for us and she’s a great scoring threat. We’ve got some players that maybe didn’t play a major role last year but have put themselves in a good position to step on the field and be big contributors and add to our attack.” While the Wolverines had arguably one of their best offensive seasons in ‘08, there’s no question the team had its most success in six NCAA seasons defensively. The team had, by far, its best goals against average (1.08) to go along with seven shutouts. Utah Valley also outscored opponents 38-to-21 and held a 157to-87 edge in shots on goal. “We do lose Mallory, our starting keeper and leader on and off the field, but we do have our backline returning. If anything we added some great depth. Kendra Buchanan, Danielle Anderson and Brooke Salcido were a great combination together and played a ton of minutes last year. I think we’ll be pretty solid defensively.” In 2008, Utah Valley soccer set in motion the steps toward becoming the successful program that Anderson expects it to be. And as the successes have been realized the expectations and goals both the team and Anderson have set have undoubtedly become greater. “When we sat down and set goals for the team, we pulled out the goals we set last year and reviewed what we accomplished. And certainly there were some goals that we didn’t attain and we reviewed that. The girls have set some pretty high goals and expectations of themselves. It will certainly challenge them. At the same time they recognize the amount of work they have to put in is greater than they ever have.”

B R ENT ANDERSON

After leading Utah Valley University soccer to its most successful season ever, head coach Brent Anderson begins his fourth full season at UVU in 2009. Anderson enters the 2009 season with a career 24-30-4 record. The 2008 Anderson-coached Wolverines finished with the most wins, the highest winning percentage and got off to the best start in the school’s six NCAA seasons. UVU was 11-7-1 including a perfect 5-0 in the United Soccer Conference regular season. 2008 also saw the Wolverines go unbeaten in their first five games, going 4-0-1, for the best start in program history. The start of the season, combined with the last two matches of the 2007 season, set a school record with a seven-game unbeaten streak. The 2008 season was also highlighted by a five-game winning streak during October. The success of that season can be contributed in large part to the team’s defensive success and a philosophy that Anderson instilled in his club. UVU surrendered just 21 goals on the season for a 1.08 goals against average, far and away school records. Eight shutouts on the year also set a new school record. In 2007, the Wolverines fielded a young squad, returning just one regular starter from the previous season. With as many as seven true freshmen starting some games, Utah Valley finished with a 6-13-1 record. The Wolverines posted a 4-1 record in regular season United Soccer Conference action and peaked at the right time, winning their final two games to win the United Soccer Conference Tournament Championship for the first time in UVU’s three years in the tournament. An unbeaten 2-0-1 record against in-state opponents highlighted the 2006 season, with victories over Utah State and Southern Utah and a tie against Dixie State in a game that was suspended due to inclement weather. After beating Delaware State, 2-1 in the first round, UVU finished its season in the United Soccer Conference (USC) tournament semifinals losing to South Dakota State in a shootout.

In his first season leading Utah Valley, Anderson’s Wolverines posted a 7-10-2 record, which at the time was the team’s best winning percentage since its first Division I season (2003). Anderson stresses overall discipline on and off the field. He teaches the importance of practicing hard, being disciplined in all workouts and being a successful, disciplined student. Anderson comes to Utah Valley with solid credentials. Before coming to the Orem campus he was an assistant coach at Utah State for eight years. Anderson helped guide USU to its most successful season in 2003. That year, the Aggies finished 10-7-2. While coaching at Utah State, Anderson was the Director of Coaches for the Valencia Futbol Club, one of the state’s premier club teams located in Cache Valley. Anderson holds a United States Soccer Federation National “B” Coaching License. To gain the prestigious license, Anderson has worked out with the United States national team’s coaching staff in several rigorous sessions before passing certified coaching tests administered by the coaches. Since 2002, Anderson has worked with the Utah state Olympic Development Program (ODP). He trains with and coaches young soccer players who aspire to play for the United States National team. He has also worked with numerous other clubs throughout the state of Utah. Currently, Anderson is an assistant coach of two of Utah Valley’s Celtic Storm club teams. He coaches the U-18 and U-14. Recently, Anderson helped lead the U-18 team to a second-place finish in state competition and a quarterfinal appearance at Regionals in Las Vegas.

Prior to his coaching career, Anderson played club soccer at Utah State for four years. He was a four-year starter and team captain in 1996 and 1997 as a goalkeeper. Anderson was named First-Team All-Region National College Soccer Association (NCSA) in 1997. In the NCSA, he played against teams such as Arizona, Michigan, Tennessee and Kansas State. As team captain, he led the Utah State club team to the NCSA Final Four in 1997. After finishing his playing career, Anderson started the Cadence Soccer Shop in Cache Valley. He ran clinics and held leagues with the business from 1996 to 2000. In 1998, Anderson opened Ultimate Sports, an Indoor Soccer Facility located in Hyde Park, Utah. He worked as the director of operations, the director of player development and the head coach of several club teams while running the business. The facility also included other recreational activities including a rock-climbing wall. Anderson is a native of Logan, Utah. He graduated from Mountain Crest High School in 1989. He played soccer all four years. In his senior year he was named to the All-Region team. When Anderson is not coaching soccer he enjoys spending time with his family, snowboarding, skateboarding and playing indoor soccer with his family and friends. Anderson and his wife Kathy have three kids: Tennessee, Easton and Kaiya.

Lake Powell, in southeast Utah and into Arizona, is a boaters paradise. During the cold winter months you can take to the slopes to ski or snowboard on some of the world’s greatest powder. Home of the 2002 Olympics, Utah has some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned ski resorts. Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort is just a short 15-minute drive up Provo Canyon and there are also numerous resorts in Park City, just 45 through the same canyon. Those who shy away from Mother Nature can find shelter at comedy clubs, dance clubs and over 100 restaurants. The University Mall, in Orem, along with the Shops at Riverwoods and Provo Towne Center Mall offer Utahns a complete shopping, restaurant and movie-going experience. It’s Official!!! The Utah Valley University athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school’s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University’s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics. Full membership now permits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events. “The lightning speed by which UVU moved from junior college to become an official member of NCAA Division I is a magnificent tribute to the entire university,” said Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland. “We are especially proud of the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have worked so hard and with such excellence to make this happen.” “This is another great day for Utah Valley University and Wolverine Athletics. This has literally been a nine-year process with the final seven being mandated by the NCAA,” said UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. “I could not be happier for our coaches and student-athletes. They have been the heroes throughout this provisional period. We look forward to what the future will bring.” UVU’s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in 2002-03, its final season in junior college athletics. In 2003-04, teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU’s teams were competing with full Div. I slates. In November of 2007, an NCAA Peer Review team made up of other NCAA Div. I member administrators, made an on-campus visit to assess the progress of the school’s transition. The group’s response was overwhelmingly positive. On May 29, 2008, UVU received notification from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification that the school successfully completed its first NCAA certification peer review. That notification coincided with the school’s official switch to university status on July 1, 2008.

In July of 2008, Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced the school’s new affiliation with the Great West Conference. Expanding from a football-only conference, the Great West consists of seven all-sport schools in UVU. The conference held championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and men’s and women’s golf in 2008-09 and the full slate of conference schedules and championships begins this fall. The schools joining UV as members of the all-sports league are Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas-Pan American. During the inaugural championship season, Utah Valley took home three Great West titles including the women’s cross country (pictured below) and both the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Professional Success

In just its first six years as an NCAA Division I program, Utah Valley University Athletics has had tremendous success in seeing its athletes move on to play or compete at the highest levels in the world. Former Wolverines Ronnie Price (men’s basketball), Kam Mickolio (baseball) and Noelle Pikus-Pace (track & field) are three of those former Utah Valley student athletes that competed at the D-I level that have found athletics success at a professional and international level. In August of 2008, Mickolio made his Major League debut for the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first Utah Valley baseball player to play Major League Baseball.

Community Involvement On March 29th, 2008, Utah Valley Athletics teamed up with the Utah Valley University Student Association for the 1st Annual Green Fever 5k Fun Run and Walk on the campus of UVU. The event, held to raise money for local charities, was a huge success and this past spring, the second annual Green Fever 5k held with $6,000 going to the Orem Rotary charities. Over 400 participants either ran or walk the course while over 200 volunteers, headed by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), help make the event a success.

Mitch Jones

Ronnie Price

Pikus-Pace became the first American woman to win a gold medal at the world championship level when she placed first at the 2007 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. NBA point guard Ronnie Price is entering his fifth year playing in professional basketball’s highest league. After spending his first two season with the Sacramento Kings, Price came to his adopted home to play for the Utah Jazz. After the past two seasons in Utah, Price entered the summer as a free agent before opting to re-sign with the Jazz for 2009. On June 17, former Wolverine Mitch Jones made his debut after nine years in the minors. Jones played at Utah Valley from 1997-98 prior to the school’s transition from junior college to NCAA D-I. Jones was an NJCAA All-American during his time in Orem and then moved on to Arizona State, where he was also an All-American and where he broke the Sun Devils’ single-season run record of 27, a record that still stands.
