TODD FAIRBOURNE

Todd Fairbourne’s love and passion for the game of softball has brought success to the Wolverine softball program. Before the Wolverines made the jump to Division I competition, Fairbourne helped guide the Utah Valley to the schools only national championship while competing in the junior college ranks. His teams also finished second and ninth at the NJCAA national tournament. Now Fairbourne, who just completed his 11th year as head coach, is guiding the Wolverines into NCAA Division I competition. He has an overall record 326-256-1 and has coached the Wolverines to Division I wins over schools like BYU, Utah, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, St. Mary’s, Brown, SUU, Harvard, Utah State, and San Diego. Fairbourne’s 2009 squad finished the season with a school-record .320 batting average, which was tied for sixth in the nation. The Wolverines were second in the nation in walks received and 18th in scoring. Next season Fairbourne will embark a new journey as his Wolverines will be fully NCAA Division I certified and will begin play in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference’s Mountain Division. Before his second stint as coach of the Wolverine softball team began, Fairbourne stepped away from coaching to try his hand in athletic administration at Utah Valley. For two years he served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs and the Sports Information Director.

In 2000, Fairbourne’s squad broke through and earned a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament. His No. 6-ranked squad made the most of its trip. The Fairbourne-led Wolverines went 5-0 in the tournament, including wins over top-ranked and highly touted Central Arizona, to claim UV’s firstever national title in any sport. The 2000 squad completed the season with a record 46 victories. In 2001, UV made it back-to back trips to the national tournament after winning both the conference and region titles. The squad finished eighth at the national tourney. Fairbourne capped his initial stint as coach in 2002 by guiding UV to its third consecutive trip to the national tourney. At nationals the No.3-ranked Wolverines dropped its first game 1-0. But undaunted, the Wolverines ran off six straight wins to earn a place opposite Indian River Community College in the championship game where the Wolverines fell 5-2 to finish second in the nation. During Fairbourne’s six years coaching UV in the junior college ranks, his teams finished the season ranked in the top-six in the nation for four consecutive seasons. He also coached 23 NJCAA All-Americans (12 academic) and 53 NFCA Scholar-Athletes. Fairbourne is a former Lehi High School baseball player, and played on two state championship teams with the Pioneers. He was coached at Lehi by Lloyd Jacobsen, the brother of UV Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. Fairbourne is a former UV student. He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Brigham Young University in 1994 and a master’s degree in heath, p.e., and recreation from Utah State University in 2003. Todd was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has children: daughters, Ashley (18) and Danielle (11), Morgan (2) and a son, C.J. (5). He resides in Orem with his wife Tiffany.

UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY Wolverines

Todd Fairbourne Head Coach 11th Season BYU (1994), Utah State (2003) Overall Record: 310-229-1

Prior to his administrative stint, Fairbourne led the UV softball program to national prominence in its final years as a junior college. From 1997 through 2002 Fairbourne’s teams compiled a 242-94 (.720) record; making him the winningest coach in UV history. During his leadership UV won three conference titles, three region titles and a national title (the school’s only national title in any sport). His teams never finished below second place in the conference and played for the region title in all but his first season. Two years after winning it all, his squad just missed a second title losing in the national championship game. In his first year as head coach, Fairbourne guided UV back to the Region 18 Tournament by virtue of a second place finish in the conference. The Wolverines finished last in the conference and missed the region tournament the year prior to Fairbourne taking over as head coach. The Wolverines were 32-20 overall. The 32 victories established a new school record for wins in a season. His second year, 1998, UV finished the season at 3117 and again finished second in the conference. The Wolverines missed out on a trip to the national tournament by losing in the Region 18 championship game. In 1999, Fairbourne’s team dominated the conference with a 17-2 mark to claim the SWAC title. However, the No.3 ranked Wolverines once again missed out on the national tournament with a disappointing and surprising second-place finish in the region tourney. UV finished with a 43-10 overall record to establish another single-season win record.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW

2010 SEASON PREVIEW OREM, Utah – For the last six seasons, the possibility of playing in the NCAA Tournament was not an option for the Utah Valley University softball team with the University was making the unprecedented move up from junior college athletics to NCAA Div. I.

lege transfer Megan Zimmerman Gardner, who led the NJCAA in homers last year with 24 and was third in RBIs with 85. “She has all the tools,” Fairbourne said of Gardner. “If she can do what she did at the JC level I

Jessica Martin, who threw the most innings for the Wolverines last year, will be coming out of the bullpen this year. Amanda Perez and Amber Sackett, who both pitched last year, will not pitch this season. Perez will be the team’s designated player. Defensively, Fairbourne said his team has made great strides.

Now with that journey complete in becoming a full NCAA Div. I member last year, the Wolverines now have a shot at an automatic bid to the softball tournament through their membership in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.

Jessica Anderson has become automatic at third, while Samantha Telarroja has stepped up her game at short. Gardner will play second, and Fairbourne calls Cherylyn McGraw the best defensive first baseman he has ever coached.

“We are incredibly excited about it. There is no other way to put it,” he said. “We are in a conference that is a good fit for us and we have the chance to make it to the postseason. Will we step in and knock off the powers? I don’t know. But we are in a situation right now where we can find out the areas in which we need to improve to get to the NCAA Tournament.”

Shaylyn Jenkins Varney, a senior transfer from BYU, and Maggie Christianson, who saw a lot of time last year as a freshman, will share the catching responsibilities. In the outfield, junior Meghan Woodworth will patrol center and lead off for the Wolverines. Woodworth hit .364 last year with 13 doubles, two triples, a homer and 21 RBIs. She also scored a team-high 36 runs scored.

In the PCSC preseason poll, the Wolverines were selected by the coaches to finish fourth in the Mountain Division.

“It’s an overused cliché in softball, but Meghan is our little engine. She makes us go,” Fairbourne said. “If she get on base we score.”

The Wolverines are entering the conference on a high note, and have continued to make improvements in the fall in pitching, hitting and defense.

Sackett, who pitched and played a little second and right field last year, has moved to left field and she is settling in nicely. The Wolverines will be counting on her offensively as well. She hit .371 last year with 10 doubles, two homers and 21 RBIs.

Utah Valley ranked sixth in the nation last year with a .320 batting average. The Wolverines lost their top hitter and best infielder in Magan Niemann and second-best hitter Kylee Steadman, but the rest of the team has made great strides in filling vacancies. “We have a lot of kids back. We did lose our top two hitters and even though we lost those two we feel like we have plugged in a couple of other kids that can make us just as solid offensively,” Fairbourne said. Most notably, the Wolverines added junior col-

Utah Valley The Utah Valley combined the quaintness of small town life and the conveniences of a metropolitan area to create an enticing community. From the majestic Wasatch Mountains in the east to glistening Utah Lake in the west, there are countless activities from which to choose. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are a number of scenic trails, including the Squaw Peak Trail, Alpine Scenic Backway and Stewart Falls Trail, for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Deer Creek Reservor, snuggled in the heart of Provo Canyon, is a favorite spot for many water lovers.

Utah is known for its natural beauty. Several National Parks, including Zion National Park and Arches National Park in Moab, are popular spots for tourists. Lake Powell, in southeast Utah and into Arizona, is a boaters paradise. During the cold winter months you can take to the slopes to ski or snowboard on some of the world’s greatest powder. Home of the 2002 Olympics, Utah has some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned ski resorts. Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort is just a short 15-minute drive up Provo Canyon and there are also numerous resorts in Park City, just 45 through the same canyon. Those who shy away from Mother Nature can find shelter at comedy clubs, dance clubs and over 100 restaurants. The University Mall, in Orem, along with the Shops at Riverwoods and Provo Towne Center Mall offer Utahns a complete shopping, restaurant and movie-going experience. Honored as one of America’s most livable cities, Orem is a strong family and community environment.

head coach Todd Fairbourne led the Wolverines to the NJCAA title.

Brent Brown Ballpark made its debut on March 24, 2005 when the Wolverines knocked off in-state foe Southern Utah 5-3. The 2,500 seat stadium also has room for 2,500 more fans on the grass berm down the third base line and in left field. It boasts both home and visitor clubhouses and batting cages, a Gold’s Gym inside the stadium and a state of the art scoreboard that make it one of the top college baseball facilities in the nation. Clyde Field is the home for Utah Valley women’s soccer. An added walkway and new bleachers were installed in 2005 to accommodate fans. During the summer of 2007, the Utah Valley athletic department began upgrading its facility. The field now has increased seating, a level playing field with new sod and an improved drainage system.

In the fall of 2007, the newly remodeled 24,000 square foot Wolverine Service Center opened giving UVU athletics a new facility including a 6,000 square foot academic center and computer lab with a lounge, kitchen and offices for compliance, academic advising and financial aid. The Wolverine Service Center also houses new marketing offices, classrooms and additional space for equipment, athletic training and doctor offices. Cross country, track & field, soccer and wrestling all have coaches offices and locker rooms in the new facility. The wrestling program also boasts an 8,000 square foot practice facility, locker room and coaches offices.

The new $1.2 million Hal Wing Track & Field will be feature seating available for 1,500 people in bleachers and numerous grass berms will be landscaped on which spectators can also sit. A press box will also be part of the project.

It’s Official!!! The Utah Valley University athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school’s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University’s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics. Full membership now permits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events. “The lightning speed by which UVU moved from junior college to become an official member of NCAA Division I is a magnificent tribute to the entire university,” said Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland. “We are especially proud of the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have worked so hard and with such excellence to make this happen.” “This is another great day for Utah Valley University and Wolverine Athletics. This has literally been a nine-year process with the final seven being mandated by the NCAA,” said UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. “I could not be happier for our coaches and student-athletes. They have been the heroes throughout this provisional period. We look forward to what the future will bring.” UVU’s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in 2002-03, its final season in junior college athletics. In 2003-04, teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU’s teams were competing with full Div. I slates. In November of 2007, an NCAA Peer Review team made up of other NCAA Div. I member administrators, made an on-campus visit to assess the progress of the school’s transition. The group’s response was overwhelmingly positive. On May 29, 2008, UVU received notification from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification that the school successfully completed its first NCAA certification peer review. That notification coincided with the school’s official switch to university status on July 1, 2008.

In July of 2008, Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced the school’s new affiliation with the Great West Conference. Expanding from a football-only conference, the Great West consists of seven all-sport schools in UVU. The conference held championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and men’s and women’s golf in 2008-09 and the full slate of conference schedules and championships begins this fall. The schools joining UV as members of the all-sports league are Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas-Pan American. During the inaugural championship season, Utah Valley took home three Great West titles including the women’s cross country (pictured below) and both the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Professional Success

In just its first six years as an NCAA Division I program, Utah Valley University Athletics has had tremendous success in seeing its athletes move on to play or compete at the highest levels in the world. Former Wolverines Ronnie Price (men’s basketball), Kam Mickolio (baseball) and Noelle Pikus-Pace (track & field) are three of those former Utah Valley student athletes that competed at the D-I level that have found athletics success at a professional and international level. In August of 2008, Mickolio made his Major League debut for the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first Utah Valley baseball player to play Major League Baseball.

Community Involvement On March 29th, 2008, Utah Valley Athletics teamed up with the Utah Valley University Student Association for the 1st Annual Green Fever 5k Fun Run and Walk on the campus of UVU. The event, held to raise money for local charities, was a huge success and this past spring, the second annual Green Fever 5k held with $6,000 going to the Orem Rotary charities. Over 400 participants either ran or walk the course while over 200 volunteers, headed by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), help make the event a success.

Mitch Jones

Ronnie Price

Pikus-Pace became the first American woman to win a gold medal at the world championship level when she placed first at the 2007 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. NBA point guard Ronnie Price is entering his fifth year playing in professional basketball’s highest league. After spending his first two season with the Sacramento Kings, Price came to his adopted home to play for the Utah Jazz. After the past two seasons in Utah, Price entered the summer as a free agent before opting to re-sign with the Jazz for 2009. On June 17, former Wolverine Mitch Jones made his debut after nine years in the minors. Jones played at Utah Valley from 1997-98 prior to the school’s transition from junior college to NCAA D-I. Jones was an NJCAA All-American during his time in Orem and then moved on to Arizona State, where he was also an All-American and where he broke the Sun Devils’ single-season run record of 27, a record that still stands.
