2009-10 SEASON OUTLOOK
WEIGHT CLASS BREAKDOWN
Utah Valley University’s wrestling program is coming off of its best season in its short seven year history as fourth-year head coach Greg Williams led his Wolverines to a school record 11-3 overall record and a 4-1 clip in the Western Wrestling Conference. This year Williams’ is looking for big things from his returning starters as his goal is to help prepare his grapplers for the opportunity to wrestle at the NCAA Championships and he has put together a tough schedule that will help them get ready for it.
125 - Benjamin Kjar is back for only his junior season wrestling and is the man at 125-lbs., for UVU. The Wolverine-Star has already become UVU’s All-Time Record holder for most victories in School History, with 68 (39 in 07-08 and 29 in 08-09). Williams and Kjar couldn’t be happier that UVU is officially eligible for the NCAA Championships for the first time as Kjar is beginning his quest at to be crowned UVU’s first National Champion. Behind Kjar Utah Valley will have a couple of true freshman backing him up in Jake Fredrickson and Trae Bennett.
“We are in a good place right now,” Williams said. “Last year was a good test for us to see where we are and now it’s time to see where we can go. As long as we can fight through early injuries, our schedule will help mentally and physically prepare us to get some guys to nationals this year.” It will be a record-breaking season, as it will mark the first year in Utah Valley University’s history that the Wolverines will be fully NCAA Div. I Certified and eligible for post-season tournaments and awards. Williams also welcomes eight of his 10 starters back from a year ago in 2009-10. Williams also welcomes a large highly touted recruiting class of 18 freshmen to the table that will immediately add much-needed depth to the roster. This year UVU will welcome the defending National Champions in the University of Iowa to Utah on Feb. 6 as the two squads will lock-heads on neutral ground in Vernal. Pre-season No. 8-ranked Boise State, will be in Orem the day before on Feb. 5 as well. The Wolverines have also requested to wrestle against top-25 teams Oklahoma and Arizona State at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas on Jan. 16. Utah Valley will begin its season Nov. 14 at the Wyoming Invitational hosted by the University of Wyoming. The Wolverines will then have a busy weekend the following week on the East Coast, as they will begin their dual slate. On Nov. 19, UVU will wrestle at UNC-Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C., and with Gardner-Webb. The next two nights the Wolverines will have a dual with NC State in Raleigh, N.C. and then they will finish by competing at the NC State Open. In December the Wolverines will head to two prestigious early-season tournaments in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Midlands Championships. The Wolverines will then look to build on their successes that they had in the Western Wrestling Conference a year ago. UVU will kick-off conference action at Air Force on Jan. 28. A big WWC date on the schedule will be two days later, Jan. 30, in Laramie, Wyo., as UVU will go head-to-head with Wyoming and Northern Iowa. It will mark the first time UVU and UNI will compete as the Panthers and Cowboys will likely be top-25 teams also. UVU will also host South Dakota State and compete at Northern Colorado in conference action before heading to the NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships in Brookings, S.D., on March 6. There the Wolverines will be looking to get as many wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Omaha, Neb., on March 18-20. “The whole team is excited for the opportunity to be able to compete in the postseason,” Williams added. “It will be great to be able to go to conference and prove ourselves there and also to get some guys to nationals.” UVU returns nine letterwinners, which includes eight of the 10 starters. Leading the way again for Utah Valley again will be junior Benjamin Kjar who is ranked No. 9 in the preseason polls at 125-pounds. Jeffrey Newby is the lone Wolverine senior this season, as the Wolverines also have five juniors and five sophomores to go along with the 18 incoming freshmen.
133 - Senior Jeffrey Newby has dropped down to 133-lbs., this season to battle with two-time letterwinner junior Flint Ray for the Wolverines starting spot. Newby has dropped a weight class as he hoping he’ll have an easier time earning a spot at nationals at the West Regional. Both will most likely see time at 133-lbs., as well as maybe even at 141-lbs., too. Ray’s younger brother Tucker will back them up as well as freshman Connor Morgan and the sophomore-transfer Glenn Terrano. 141 - In a weight class that could see multiple starters, redshirt-freshman Wyatt Ray will strive to be the guy at 141-lbs., this year. Currently it looks as though Ray might be sidelined with an injury for a couple of weeks as freshmen Ikeru Abe, Marty Carlson, and Sean Porter, all might see some action at 141-lbs., too. 149 - Junior Justin Morrill has the most experience under his belt at 149lbs., as he has 35 career victories in two seasons of action at UVU. Morrill had a good 2008-09 year as he went 23-13. He will be challenged for his starting spot though when redshirt-freshman Josh Wilson gets back from a knee injury in Feb. Freshmen Clay Frost, Sylvan Johnson and Bryar Saddoris round out a large 149-lbs., group. 157 - Sophomore Jamison Moss will be the starter at 157 when he gets healthy but for now UVU will look for redshirt-freshman Richard Winger to step up and fill in while he’s out. Freshman Abner Cook, an Idaho state standout high school wrestler will most likely redshirt this season. 165 - Junior Jeb Clark will be the Wolverines go-to guy at 165 we he gets healthy this season. He put up a 10-2 clip in duals last year while battling through injuries almost all season long. For now true-freshman Monte Schmalhaus, from Tooele, Utah, will get the opportunity to show Williams as well as his teammates what he can do. 174 - Sophomore Brad Darrington had a successful season for the Wolverines at 174 in 2008-09 as he went 18-12 during his freshman year. With a year under his belt Williams hopes Darrington will only get better. He will be pushed by freshman Colton Kiernan who will back him up at 174. 184 - Casen Eldredge, the two-time letter-winner for UVU, will enter his junior campaign at 184-lbs., in 2009-10. Eldredge had a very successful season last year where he wrestled his way to a 20-win season for Williams’ Wolverines. Behind Eldredge will also be freshman Colton Kiernan. 197 - With last year’s single-season wins leader gone on an LDS Church mission, Adam Fager, UVU will look to true-freshman Josh Wood to step in and try to fill Fager’s large shoes. Behind Wood will be sophomore Eric McAllister who himself recently returned from serving an LDS Church mission. Hwt. - The Wolverines were very thin at heavyweight last season, but this year they recruited a couple of true-freshmen, in Dylan Stadel and Zac Jensen to fill that void. Stadel looks to have the early advantage and baring injury will be the starter 2009-10.

The Western Wrestling Conference (WWC), an NCAA Division I wrestling-only alliance, will begin its fourth season of competition in 2009-10. The WWC sent 14 wrestlers to the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis and saw the league’s second and third All-Americans crowned when Wyoming’s Joe LeBlanc earned All-American honors by placing fifth at 184-pounds and Northern Iowa’s Moza Fay captured sixth-place honors in the 165-pound weight class. The 2009 NCAA West Regional, which was held at the Butler-Hancock Hall on the campus of Northern Colorado, served as the conference tournament for the third straight season. UNI was crowned the team champion, while Wyoming’s Mark Branch was named the league’s Coach of the Year. The goal of the league is to replace the West Regional with the conference tournament, which would then serve as the NCAA qualifier. The WWC enjoyed plenty of success in its inaugural year of competition, which included sending 19 wrestlers to the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The first WWC tournament took place under the title of NCAA West Regional on March 3 in the McLeod Center on UNI’s campus. The 2009 NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference tournament will be hosted by the University of Northern Colorado and will take place in Butler-Hancock Hall. The 2007 West Regional served as the first national qualifier for three schools making the move from Division II to Division I. North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Northern Colorado all sent wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the first time since reclassifying to Division I. Utah Valley is also a reclassifying institution and for the first time in school history is now fully eligible for the postseason. With league members spread out over six states and two time zones, schools will only be required to compete against four league schools in dual action to be eligible for the regular season conference championship. Schools will be encouraged to schedule as many conference schools as possible. The WWC recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis. Individual awards include Wrestler of the Week; All-Conference teams; an Academic All-Conference team; and Wrestler, Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards. The league also crowns a team champion following the conclusion of the regular season conference competition and the postseason tournament. The governance of the Western Wrestling Conference will remain primarily with the member institutions. Scheduling of contests, assignment of officials and certain media relations functions will remain with member institutions. One of the major benefits of having a league spread out so far is the added exposure – both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations. The conference affiliation is also expected to generate much interest within the seven schools’ substantial alumni base, which numbers nearly 800,000 combined. Charter members of the Western Wrestling Conference include: the United States Air Force Academy, North Dakota State University, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming.

Utah is known for its natural beauty. Several National Parks, including Zion National Park and Arches National Park in Moab, are popular spots for tourists. Lake Powell, in southeast Utah and into Arizona, is a boaters paradise. During the cold winter months you can take to the slopes to ski or snowboard on some of the world’s greatest powder. Home of the 2002 Olympics, Utah has some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned ski resorts. Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort is just a short 15-minute drive up Provo Canyon and there are also numerous resorts in Park City, just 45 through the same canyon. Those who shy away from Mother Nature can find shelter at comedy clubs, dance clubs and over 100 restaurants. The University Mall, in Orem, along with the Shops at Riverwoods and Provo Towne Center Mall offer Utahns a complete shopping, restaurant and movie-going experience. Honored as one of America’s most livable cities, Orem is a strong family and community environment.

It’s Official!!! The Utah Valley University athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school’s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University’s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics. Full membership now permits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events. “The lightning speed by which UVU moved from junior college to become an official member of NCAA Division I is a magnificent tribute to the entire university,” said Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland. “We are especially proud of the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have worked so hard and with such excellence to make this happen.” “This is another great day for Utah Valley University and Wolverine Athletics. This has literally been a nine-year process with the final seven being mandated by the NCAA,” said UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. “I could not be happier for our coaches and student-athletes. They have been the heroes throughout this provisional period. We look forward to what the future will bring.” UVU’s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in 2002-03, its final season in junior college athletics. In 2003-04, teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU’s teams were competing with full Div. I slates. In November of 2007, an NCAA Peer Review team made up of other NCAA Div. I member administrators, made an on-campus visit to assess the progress of the school’s transition. The group’s response was overwhelmingly positive. On May 29, 2008, UVU received notification from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification that the school successfully completed its first NCAA certification peer review. That notification coincided with the school’s official switch to university status on July 1, 2008.

In July of 2008, Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced the school’s new affiliation with the Great West Conference. Expanding from a football-only conference, the Great West consists of seven all-sport schools in UVU. The conference held championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and men’s and women’s golf in 2008-09 and the full slate of conference schedules and championships begins this fall. The schools joining UV as members of the all-sports league are Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas-Pan American. During the inaugural championship season, Utah Valley took home three Great West titles including the women’s cross country (pictured below) and both the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Professional Success
In just its first six years as an NCAA Division I program, Utah Valley University Athletics has had tremendous success in seeing its athletes move on to play or compete at the highest levels in the world. Former Wolverines Ronnie Price (men’s basketball), Kam Mickolio (baseball) and Noelle Pikus-Pace (track & field) are three of those former Utah Valley student athletes that competed at the D-I level that have found athletics success at a professional and international level. In August of 2008, Mickolio made his Major League debut for the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first Utah Valley baseball player to play Major League Baseball.
Community Involvement On March 29th, 2008, Utah Valley Athletics teamed up with the Utah Valley University Student Association for the 1st Annual Green Fever 5k Fun Run and Walk on the campus of UVU. The event, held to raise money for local charities, was a huge success and this past spring, the second annual Green Fever 5k held with $6,000 going to the Orem Rotary charities. Over 400 participants either ran or walk the course while over 200 volunteers, headed by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), help make the event a success.
Mitch Jones
Ronnie Price
Pikus-Pace became the first American woman to win a gold medal at the world championship level when she placed first at the 2007 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. NBA point guard Ronnie Price is entering his fifth year playing in professional basketball’s highest league. After spending his first two season with the Sacramento Kings, Price came to his adopted home to play for the Utah Jazz. After the past two seasons in Utah, Price entered the summer as a free agent before opting to re-sign with the Jazz for 2009. On June 17, former Wolverine Mitch Jones made his debut after nine years in the minors. Jones played at Utah Valley from 1997-98 prior to the school’s transition from junior college to NCAA D-I. Jones was an NJCAA All-American during his time in Orem and then moved on to Arizona State, where he was also an All-American and where he broke the Sun Devils’ single-season run record of 27, a record that still stands.
