Brent Brow n B a l lp a rk On June 13, 2007, Utah Valley’s baseball stadium was officially named Brent Brown Ballpark. In support of higher education in Utah County, Brent and Kim Brown and Ira and Mary Lou Fulton generously donated to Utah Valley to help pay the bond for the stadium. The stadium made its debut on March 24, 2005 against Southern Utah, a 5-3 Utah Valley win. The 2,500 seat stadium also has room for 2,500 more fans on the grass berm down the third base line and in left field. It boasts both home and visitor clubhouses and batting cages, a Gold’s Gym inside the stadium and a state of the art scoreboard that make it one of the top college baseball facilities in the nation. Beyond the left field wall, the Utah Valley University campus and the Wasatch Mountains provide the park with a beautiful backdrop.

2010 SEAS O N P R E V I E W Eric Madsen’s 2010 squad returns eight of 10 starters from last year, including its top seven hitters off of a team that batted a school-record .329 a season ago. Over the final 30 games of 2009, a decent sample size, UVU hit .371 as club. “The track record shows us there is reason to be excited. That’s something we know that’s returning,” said Madsen of the offense. “We’ll definitely have more power. That’s one of the areas our offense that has to improve. We’re going to be better at the other parts of the game as well. Bunting the baseball, stealing bases, going from first to third.” Of the eight starters, Jace Brinkerhoff returns off of a remarkable 2009 campaign in which he hit .433 and shattered the school record with 94 hits. The First Team Division I All-Independent performer became the school’s career hit leader and career average leader during his junior season as well. “We know he’ll hit. Having him everyday in your lineup is awesome to have. He can do so many things. He’s got all

the tools,” said Madsen. “Jace is our cornerstone and he’s proven that over the past four years.” Billy Burgess is back after a freshman season that saw him finish second on the team with a .381 average, eight home runs and 42 batted in just 38 games. Burgess, who was named the Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year, was a perfect 4-for-4 with three grand slams and 14 RBI with the bases loaded during his rookie campaign. He is also carrying with him a 14-game hitting streak into the beginning of the season. Other returners include junior Chris Benson, who capped an impressive secondhalf by hitting for the cycle at Hawai’i, seniors Kevin Arendse and Sage Thorpe, junior Jake Rickenbach and sophomores Kirk Doxey and Goose Kallunki. Benson raised his average 90 points over the final month-and-a-half of the season and finished at .336. Arendse hit a career-high .313 and Thorpe batted a quiet .370 splitting his time between serving as Arendse’s back up behind the

plate, at first base and DH. Rickenbach showed flashes of pop with seven home runs while batting .322 and driving in a team-high 43 runs. Doxey led the team with 10 home runs and hit three in one game in a series against Air Force and Kallunki entrenched himself in the lineup after a 10-for-15 series at Northern Colorado in early May. Three possible impact bats that could find their names on daily lineup card include Austin Heaps, Jason Zundel and Cole McWhorter. All three will see their first action since returning from LDS missions. Heaps hit .348 with seven home runs and 54 batted in as a freshman in 2007 and can play in the outfield and at first base but will spend a lot of time as the team’s DH. Zundel and McWhorter were both back from missions prior to 2009 but both redshirted due to injuries. Zundel is the probably opening day left fielder while McWhorter will get the nod at second base.

2010 SEAS O N P R E V I E W “Those guys are all different. Heaps is a consistent run producer that’ll hit home runs and drive guys in,” said Madsen. “The other two do have pop but they’re more run scorers. They’ll get on and steal bases, take the extra bases. Having those guys back is a giant addition to our program. It makes our offense that much better.”

season’s opening weeks of the season to let the staff and each pitcher’s role sort itself out. Junior Kyle Beecher had one of his best two performances of 2009 come in his final appearance in what was his only start. He tossed 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits in a win at Hawai’i and will get the nod as the opening day starter at Arizona.

The team’s biggest question mark remains the pitching staff, which is at the forefront of nearly every college baseball’s to-do list. After losing staff ace Justin Smith to the MLB Draft after his stellar junior season, Madsen and pitching coach Dave Carter reloaded the staff with JC transfers, freshmen and a reliance on last year’s younger pitchers to step into new roles.

JC transfers Sam Armstrong (Southern Idaho) and Zane Gray (Salt Lake) will also get starts in the opening series at Arizona and Madsen may lean on Craig Brimhall to serve as the team’s closer, a role he had as a freshman in 2007 before embarking on an LDS mission.

“We have some good arms and pitching coach Dave (Carter) has done a great job with them but they have to show us what they can do in games,” Madsen said. “We’ve been pleased with their progress but that’s one of the biggest unknowns.” Senior Brock Sargent is the lone returning starting pitcher and Madsen will use the

2010 also marks the beginning of the new Great West Conference. The conference includes affiliate members New York Tech (NYIT) and Northern Colorado as well as six other Great West schools. The conference schedule will comprise half of the season schedule with Utah Valley traveling to NYIT and UNC as well as series at Houston Baptist and Chicago State. The Wolverines host NJIT, Texas-Pan American and North Dakota in conference play.

“For the most part the conference is unknown but our goal is to win the conference. It’s a good goal to have and its something that we’ve never had to opportunity to do before,” said Madsen. `We want to know where our club is at by the time we get into conference play. If that means we give guys more opportunities early on to see who’s going to be there for us then that’s what we’ll do.” The 28-game non-conference schedule includes the opening series at Arizona and a trip to the Coca Cola Classic in Surprise, Arizona with games against Florida International, No. 14 (USA Today/ ESPN) Oregon State, UC Riverside and Cal Poly. West Coast Conference programs Portland and Gonzaga will both be in Orem in late March for three-game series. The Wolverines also play 13 in-state games with eight coming against Southern Utah, three vs. Utah and two against BYU. The season culminates with the inaugural GWC Tournament May 26-29 at TexasPan American in Edinburg, Texas.

HEAD COAC H E R I C M A DS E N Eric Madsen is entering his second season as the head coach of the Utah Valley baseball program. Madsen served for five seasons as an assistant coach under Steve Gardner. Madsen has been a part of the program since the school’s first season of NCAA Division I competition in 2003 and now will be the first head coach under the school’s official new title, Utah Valley University. As an assistant at Utah Valley, Madsen tutored Kam Mickolio, who was drafted in the 18th round by the Seattle Mariners in 2006 and who became Utah Valley’s first MLB player when he made his Major League debut on August 20, 2008. Madsen spent seven years (1996-2003) as the head coach at the College of Eastern Utah, in Price, Utah, amassing a 146-160 record. While there he coached current Texas Rangers pitcher Willie Eyre, who was a junior college All-American while playing for Madsen. He also coached at CEU with current UVU assistant Dave Carter from 1996-99.

His Eastern Utah teams competed every year in what is considered to be one of the best Junior College conferences in the nation. Madsen spent two years (1994-1996) as an assistant at Eastern Utah before taking over the helm in 1996. Madsen was also an assistant coach for the Zion Pioneerz, a former professional independent baseball club in St. George, Utah. Madsen’s played collegiately at both Eastern Utah, from 1990-92, and at Southern Utah University, from 1993-95. He later received his Bachelor’s degree from Bellevue University. Madsen had an outstanding playing career at both Eastern Utah from 1990-92 and at Southern Utah University from 1993-95. At Eastern Utah he was named the Golden Eagle Player of the Year in 1992. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Bellevue. A graduate of Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Madsen lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. As a standout pitcher and infielder he was a three-year starter, two-time All-City selection and was named Athlete of the Year as a senior. Madsen and his wife Jessica have five sons, Mick, Maddux, McGwire, Mays and Murphy and one daughter, Macee.

While at Eastern Utah, he directed the Golden Eagles to a 146-160 overall record.

JUNIOR COLLEGE HISTORY Prior to making the jump to Division-I athletics, Utah Valley State spent 32 seasons at the junior college level. Gary Pullins was the first coach in Utah Valley history, starting the program in 1971 and coaching five seasons in Orem. Dave Nelson succeeded Pullins in 1976 and coached the Wolverines for 14 successful seasons that included nine regular season conference championships. Steve Gardner took over for Nelson in 1991, leading Utah Valley to three regular season Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships and two Region XVIII Championships.

Utah Valley The Utah Valley combined the quaintness of small town life and the conveniences of a metropolitan area to create an enticing community. From the majestic Wasatch Mountains in the east to glistening Utah Lake in the west, there are countless activities from which to choose. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are a number of scenic trails, including the Squaw Peak Trail, Alpine Scenic Backway and Stewart Falls Trail, for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Deer Creek Reservor, snuggled in the heart of Provo Canyon, is a favorite spot for many water lovers.

Utah is known for its natural beauty. Several National Parks, including Zion National Park and Arches National Park in Moab, are popular spots for tourists. Lake Powell, in southeast Utah and into Arizona, is a boaters paradise. During the cold winter months you can take to the slopes to ski or snowboard on some of the world’s greatest powder. Home of the 2002 Olympics, Utah has some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned ski resorts. Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort is just a short 15-minute drive up Provo Canyon and there are also numerous resorts in Park City, just 45 through the same canyon. Those who shy away from Mother Nature can find shelter at comedy clubs, dance clubs and over 100 restaurants. The University Mall, in Orem, along with the Shops at Riverwoods and Provo Towne Center Mall offer Utahns a complete shopping, restaurant and movie-going experience. Honored as one of America’s most livable cities, Orem is a strong family and community environment.

head coach Todd Fairbourne led the Wolverines to the NJCAA title.

Brent Brown Ballpark made its debut on March 24, 2005 when the Wolverines knocked off in-state foe Southern Utah 5-3. Clyde Field is the home for Utah Valley women’s soccer. An added walkway and new bleachers were installed in 2005 to accommodate fans. During the summer of 2007, the Utah Valley athletic department began upgrading its facility. The field now has increased seating, a level playing field with new sod and an improved drainage system.

In the fall of 2007, the newly remodeled 24,000 square foot Wolverine Service Center opened giving UVU athletics a new facility including a 6,000 square foot academic center and computer lab with a lounge, kitchen and offices for compliance, academic advising and financial aid. The Wolverine Service Center also houses new marketing offices, classrooms and additional space for equipment, athletic training and doctor offices. Cross country, track & field, soccer and wrestling all have coaches offices and locker rooms in the new facility. The wrestling program also boasts an 8,000 square foot practice facility, locker room and coaches offices.

The new $1.2 million Hal Wing Track & Field will be feature seating available for 1,500 people in bleachers and numerous grass berms will be landscaped on which spectators can also sit. A press box will also be part of the project.

It’s Official!!! The Utah Valley University athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school’s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University’s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics. Full membership now permits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events. “The lightning speed by which UVU moved from junior college to become an official member of NCAA Division I is a magnificent tribute to the entire university,” said Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland. “We are especially proud of the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have worked so hard and with such excellence to make this happen.” “This is another great day for Utah Valley University and Wolverine Athletics. This has literally been a nine-year process with the final seven being mandated by the NCAA,” said UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. “I could not be happier for our coaches and student-athletes. They have been the heroes throughout this provisional period. We look forward to what the future will bring.” UVU’s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in 2002-03, its final season in junior college athletics. In 2003-04, teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU’s teams were competing with full Div. I slates. In November of 2007, an NCAA Peer Review team made up of other NCAA Div. I member administrators, made an on-campus visit to assess the progress of the school’s transition. The group’s response was overwhelmingly positive. On May 29, 2008, UVU received notification from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification that the school successfully completed its first NCAA certification peer review. That notification coincided with the school’s official switch to university status on July 1, 2008.

In July of 2008, Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced the school’s new affiliation with the Great West Conference. Expanding from a football-only conference, the Great West consists of seven all-sport schools in UVU. The conference held championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and men’s and women’s golf in 2008-09 and the full slate of conference schedules and championships begins this fall. The schools joining UV as members of the all-sports league are Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas-Pan American. During the inaugural championship season, Utah Valley took home three Great West titles including the women’s cross country (pictured below) and both the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Professional Success

In just its first six years as an NCAA Division I program, Utah Valley University Athletics has had tremendous success in seeing its athletes move on to play or compete at the highest levels in the world. Former Wolverines Ronnie Price (men’s basketball), Kam Mickolio (baseball) and Noelle Pikus-Pace (track & field) are three of those former Utah Valley student athletes that competed at the D-I level that have found athletics success at a professional and international level. In August of 2008, Mickolio made his Major League debut for the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first Utah Valley baseball player to play Major League Baseball.

Community Involvement On March 29th, 2008, Utah Valley Athletics teamed up with the Utah Valley University Student Association for the 1st Annual Green Fever 5k Fun Run and Walk on the campus of UVU. The event, held to raise money for local charities, was a huge success and this past spring, the second annual Green Fever 5k held with $6,000 going to the Orem Rotary charities. Over 400 participants either ran or walk the course while over 200 volunteers, headed by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), help make the event a success.

Mitch Jones

Ronnie Price

Pikus-Pace became the first American woman to win a gold medal at the world championship level when she placed first at the 2007 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. NBA point guard Ronnie Price is entering his fifth year playing in professional basketball’s highest league. After spending his first two season with the Sacramento Kings, Price came to his adopted home to play for the Utah Jazz. After the past two seasons in Utah, Price entered the summer as a free agent before opting to re-sign with the Jazz for 2009. On June 17, former Wolverine Mitch Jones made his debut after nine years in the minors. Jones played at Utah Valley from 1997-98 prior to the school’s transition from junior college to NCAA D-I. Jones was an NJCAA All-American during his time in Orem and then moved on to Arizona State, where he was also an All-American and where he broke the Sun Devils’ single-season run record of 27, a record that still stands.
