2010 SEASON PREVIEW After finishing second in the Great West Conference a year ago, the Utah Valley University women’s volleyball team has its sights set on winning its first conference title in 2010 and earning its first NCAA bid. Head coach Sam Atoa is back for his 12th season at the helm of UVU and hopes that his experienced roster can get the job done in 2010. “Last year was a huge disappointment that we didn’t attain our goal to win the conference championship,” Atoa said. “This year, the girls are motivated to put in the time and effort to try to be better throughout the season and conference tournament. Hopefully we can do the right things to get us there and give us another opportunity to play for that.

OUTSIDE HITTERS Even though Camie Manwill is gone, the Wolverines still have their best depth in this position with Broadbent Doxey, Garfield Heaps, Kuresa and Barker. Broadbent Doxey (6-0) led the entire GWC in kills last year as she finished with 494, and an average of 4.30 kills per set. Garfield Heaps (5-11) is the next top returner in that category as she averaged 1.82 kills per set as well, while Kuresa (6-0) had 110 kills a year ago. Redshirt-freshman Barker (6-1) will also vie for playing time as well. MIDDLES With Orem-native Robison entering her senior year as a Wolverine and her running mates Clement and Nish in the middle as well, UVU should be very solid in this position. Clement (6-2) led the squad in blocks a year ago with 104, while Robison (6-1) was right behind her with 81. Nish (6-2) will also see key playing time in the middle as she had 46 blocks last season.

“We all are also shooting towards making the NCAA tournament as well. It will be very, very difficult to do that but there is always a chance. If we are fortunate enough to do well in the month of September, it will be key to help determine if that is going to be a possibility or not. We are going to work towards it and if it happens great but if not we will keep working hard to help make that a reality in the years to come.”

RIGHT SIDE Atoa will turn to a number of his middle blockers to play right side as well. He will most likely he will turn to Clement and Nish to play there.

Atoa welcomes back four starters and nine letterwinniners from a year ago. One of those includes the newly married reigning Great West Conference Player of the Year Kayli Broadbent Doxey.

SETTERS With Chelsey Fa’alogo a talented setter that is no longer on the team in 2010, Atoa will look to Anderson and the incoming freshman Campbell in this department. Anderson (5-8) was third on the team in assists in 2009 with 75 and had a solid assist per set ratio with 4.17. Campbell (6-0) who was a very good setter at Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Ariz., will challenge Anderson for the starting spot.

UVU also returns four seniors and four juniors in 2010. Leading the way for the seniors is the aforementioned OH Broadbent Doxey, DS Lanni O’Reilly, MB Dani Robison and DS Kathleen Stevens. The four returning juniors are S Rachel Anderson, MB/RS Sarah Clement, recently married OH Chelsey Garfield Heaps and OH Jaicee Kuresa. The lone sophomore and final returning letterwinner from a year ago is MB/RS Erica Nish. The Wolverines also welcome back two redshirtfreshmen, in OH Lindsay Barker and DS Patti Flagg. Two newcomers will also join the Wolverine volleyball squad this season and will look to help solidify the roster. Brookelyn Campbell a S from Gilbert, Ariz., and Tawny Hughes a DS from Keller, Texas, round out the roster. The Wolverines officially begin the year Friday, Aug. 27, in Columbia, Mo., at the Tiger Invitational when they take on Nevada at 3 p.m. MT. On Saturday, the early-season schedule gets even more challenging when UVU will play two matches; one against Maryland of the ACC and the other against host Mizzou of the Big 12.

4

DEFENSE With no more Allyce Jones at libero in a UVU uniform, the Wolverines will turn to a couple of seniors to fill the void, Stevens and O’Reilly. Stevens (5-8) was fourth in digs a year ago with 238 and also led the team in service aces with 51. O’Reilly (5-9) will challenge for the starting spot as she was seventh with 26 digs. Flagg, a 5-6 freshman from Las Vegas, will bring depth to the position. “I’m encouraged for the upcoming season,” Atoa added. “We’ve had some challenges already with some individuals that decided not to come back but the girls have been able to step up and accept new roles and responsibilities that will definitely help us.”

Head SAM ATOA Coach ~ 12th Season

to its second title in three seasons.

Career Record: 251-115 ~ NCAA Division I Record: 113-84 Alma Mater: Brigham Young University, 1988

The 2010 season marks Sam Atoa’s 12th year as the head coach at Utah Valley University. During his tenure, the Wolver ines have posted a 251-115 overall record, including a 113-84 mark in seven NCAA Division I seasons.

In 2009, Atoa led his club to its best Division I season to date as his team won a school-record 22 games and finished 22-10 overall. He also led UVU to a second place finish in its inaugural year of Great West Conference play, as his team finished second in both regular season with a 10-2 record and at the GWC Tournament. Not only did his Wolverines excel in conference but also against Division I powerhouses as Atoa led his team to its first-ever win over a nationally- ranked opponent as UVU defeated the #17 ranked Utah Utes, for the first time, at home by a score of 3-1.

Atoa also led his team to a very successful NCAA season in 2007 as the Wolverines put up 21 wins (which was a school record at that time) while winning their second consecutive Division I Independent Championship. For the success, Atoa was named the Independent Coach of the Year for the second time as UVU swept all four major year-end Independent awards.

Utah Valley breezed through the 2007 Independent Championship under Atoa, sweeping each of its three opponents en route

The 2007 campaign marked the third consecutive season that an Atoa-coached player was named the Independent Setter of the Year. Kristi Lindley received that honor after current assistant Lacee Koelliker won the award in both 2005 and 2006. Atoa’s spikers finished 17-11 in 2006, following up a then school-record 18-11 season and a Division I Independent Championship in 2005. During that Independent Championship season, UVU won 10 of its last 11 matches and Atoa was named the Division I Independent Coach of the Year. In their second season as a Division I program in 2004 the Wolverines finished with an 11-16 record that included wins over Memphis, Central Florida, Montana, Portland State, and Boise State. As well as two wins each over fellow Div. I Independent teams: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas Pan-American. In the first year of Division I competition in 2003, Atoa led the Wolverine volleyball program to a 10-14 record, including wins over Div. I opponents Boise State and Pac-10 power Washington State. Atoa took over the reins of the UV volleyball program in 1999 after six years as an assistant to former head coach Lori Richards. In his first season at the helm of the UV volleyball program Atoa led the Wolverines to a 32-12 record. UV just missed a trip to the national tournament with a tight, five-set loss in the district championship. Then, in just his second season at the helm, Atoa led UV to the NJCAA National Tournament and a third-place finish in the nation. The third-place finish equaled UV’s best showing ever at nationals. Atoa was named Tachikara/AVCA Junior College National Coach of the Year and Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2002, Atoa led the Wolverines to a sixth-place finish at nationals. In May 2010, Atoa was able to take his volleyball team on a venture to his homeland of Samoa and also New Zealand. The idea came to Atoa after a devastating tsunami struck his home country in the fall of 2009 and Atoa knew that he had to do something to help. Prior to the trip, Atoa and his team collected thousands of items like medical supplies, hygiene kits, furniture, sporting goods and clothing in Utah and had them shipped to Samoa. When the team arrived they were able to deliver those items to help the people in need. On the trip, Atoa led his team on a journey filled with service where they visited schools, hospitals, elderly care centers and focused to help aid the hardest hit areas of the tsunami. While on the trip, Atoa also took his team on a tour of New Zealand for seven days. There his Wolverines taught camps to up-and-coming volleyball goers as well as played a number of exhibition matches. Atoa played volleyball for Brigham Young University from 1984 to 1988, and helped led the Cougars to three consecutive National Collegiate Club Championships. In 1989, Atoa started his coaching career at BYU assisting Coach Carl McGown when the program was officially sanctioned as an NCAA sport. In 1990, Atoa accepted a supervisor position in the Intramural program at Utah Valley and travelled back and forth between both schools for a year to fulfill his obligations. In 1991 Atoa accepted the position to be an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Utah Valley. In 1993 he accepted the position to be the Intramural Director and remained in that position until 2001 while still coaching. Atoa was born and raised in Pesega, Samoa, and has a rich cultural and athletic background. He is highly honored and respected in his country, having received the Papalii or “Son of the King” title from the late Head of State of Samoa, His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II. Atoa went to high school at the Church College of Western Samoa and graduated with high honors. After graduating from high school, Atoa went to BYU-Hawaii and played volleyball for two years. He earned his way through school by entertaining and dancing at the Polynesian Cultural Center. In 1982 he served an LDS Church Mission in the California San Jose Mission. Following his mission, he moved to Provo and attended BYU where and earned a spot on the club team that went on to attain national prominence. Atoa and his wife, Lori, reside in Orem and are the parents of six children: Sam, Bradley, Devri, Andrew, Darci and Saini.

UVU’s Trip to New Zealand & Samoa - May 2010 UVU’s volleyball team left to New Zealand on May 3 and then traveled on to Samoa on May 11, where they then spent six days. While the first leg of the trip was focused mostly on volleyball, the team’s stop in Samoa was more of a humanitarian visit. The trip started with seven days in New Zealand. The Wolverines played three exhibition matches and had a chance to tour the country. Then it was off to Samoa where Atoa was able to use his ties to his home country to give back to a group of people who are still trying to recover from a devastating tsunami. Prior to their trip, UVU collected items like medical supplies, hygiene kits, furniture, sporting goods and clothing in Utah and had them shipped to Samoa. When they arrived they were able to deliver many of those items to people in need. Head Coach Sam Atoa, who was born in Samoa and lived there until he graduated from high school, had numerous connections to help make the trip possible. “I think the girls were overwhelmed by how they were received by the community,” Atoa said. “The greatest days of the trip were when we were able to deliver the things we had collected; that was an incredible feeling. One of the girls called it ‘Santa Claus’ day when we delivered the items.” “I can’t help but feel like we’ve come closer together as a team,” Atoa said. “I think the girls got an understanding of what life is all about and they had the chance to give service to others.”
