A MARITIME COMMUNITY IN WHICH ALL INDIVIDUALS, REGARDLESS OF GENDER, ARE EMPOWERED TO PURSUE THEIR CAREER AMBITIONS.

The Women Offshore Foundation, also known as Women Offshore, is an online organization and resource center established in 2017 to support a diverse workforce on the water. As a 501(c)(3), non-profit private operating foundation, our mission is to propel women+ into meaningful careers through access to a worldwide community and professional development resources, while raising awareness amongst industry leaders and decision makers about issues affecting women on the water.

As a community centered on the lived experiences of women+ working on the water, we are deeply committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion – both within our own community as well as within the broader industry. Our mission includes eliminating gender-based discrimination through an intersectional approach, and our membership includes women and members of marginalized gender identities and expressions.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Women Offshore’s impact was tremendous in 2022, and we expanded our programs to empower our community!

As a direct result of supporters like you, we hired more staff to expand our programs. The team grew our Sexual Assault & Violence Eradication (SAVE) Program to align with the USCG and CGIS to report sexual misconduct on the water. Our organization spoke with maritime groups to highlight the challenges victims face and provided feedback on the Safer Seas Act to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct on US-flagged vessels

Our Career Services Program was launched in the latter half of the year. The program coordinator, Christine MacMillan, assisted 12 candidates, coaching them and providing scholarships to cover necessary training Working alongside companies, large and small, Christine has strived to place women+ in roles that will begin or further their careers on the water.

Whether it was our Benefit Gala, Career Day, or Annual Conference, we used our platform to raise voices in our community and provide resources to propel careers forward. We also introduced a new event,

ALYSSA RAY FINDS A NEW CAREER THROUGH WOMEN OFFSHORE

I was scrolling Facebook and ran across a post by Women Offshore. I always enjoyed reading the write ups that the women did about themselves and their jobs and I decided to see if I could speak to someone at the organization. Within a matter of hours had a zoom call set up with the Director of Career Services at Women Offshore, Christine MacMillan.

Our first chat was eye opening. Christine asked me questions that I had not yet asked myself. She wanted to know what I liked about boating and my likes and dislikes about my experiences on the yachts. During our conversation, I realized that I wanted my day-to-day life at sea to make more of a positive impact on the environment and/or society.

Christine put me in touch with captains at SpaceX and I had a great chat with them and look forward to maybe working with them in the future. She also spoke highly of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who happened to have a job opening that I applied for and accepted. I am thrilled to be invited to speak about my experiences at the Women Offshore gala in February. I cannot wait to network at this event and meet all the amazing people who support this organization.

Not only has Women Offshore provided me with concrete career development, but they have offered advice and mentorship when things got hairy at sea. I feel so much more confident being a woman out here in this environment knowing I have this organization to guide me. I look forward to being a lifelong member and future mentor with Women Offshore."

STORIES FROM THE COMMUNITY

MEAGHAN HERDINA HARNESSES WOMEN OFFSHORE OPPORTUNITIES

I have always loved being on the water, but I had never considered it to be a career. It wasn’t until the summer of 2021 that I accepted a deckhand position on a sightseeing boat in Alaska. My first day on the job, I saw humpback whales bubble-net feeding and knew this is what I wanted to do. I researched what it would take to get my captain’s license and decided to follow the humpbacks to Hawaii to keep gaining more boating experience and sea days.

This past fall, I also took the AB courses and in my first class, another female mariner introduced me to Christine MacMillan from Women Offshore Foundation. I shared my story and goals with Christine, and she has been extremely supportive of my new career journey. She helped me apply for a scholarship, re-write my resume, and connect me to a few research vessels.

I’m grateful an organization like Women Offshore Foundation is available and has been supportive in this transition through new territory. I have looked up to my fellow female captains, and one day I hope to be an example and leader for future female captains. I’m excited to apply my new skills as an AB and Captain in my next adventures, as I hope to explore unique places around the world like the Artic, Antarctica, and everywhere else!" aptain

PROPEL WOMEN INTO MEANINGFUL CAREERS

WOMEN OFFSHORE'S CAREER SERVICES

In June 2022, we launched the Career Development Program. Our Director of Career Services, Christine MacMillan, led the way to reduce the gender gap and made real waves in many lives!

Christine followed through on the initiative, expanding it from an entry-level development program to offer multiple career services that includes academy outreach and resources for the job application process (e.g. resume writing and interview preparation).

Christine has done a tremendous job to turn one initative into a department at Women Offshore that we now refer to as Career Services! Her vision is to provide customized career counseling to program participants with sea-going careers and those looking to dive into the industry!

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

At Women Offshore, we believe that in order to reduce the gender gap, we must connect women seeking mentoring with experienced seafarers in this community. Our mentor program, the Women Offshore MentorSHIP, virtually connects both mentors and mentees. This program is open to women anywhere in the world who have previously worked or currently work on the water in the maritime or offshore oil and gas industries

4.25/5 MENTORING QUALITY SCORE

75 GOALS SET

"I wish a program like this existed when I was a young 3rd mate starting my career!"

"My mentorship experience has been rewarding in many ways. The enthusiasm shown by my mentees and their drive to keep learning has been motivating for me personally."

76 MENTORS IN THE PROGRAM

124 MENTEES IN THE PROGRAM

"I've learned a lot from the men I work with, but it is nuanced when it comes to a woman handling the same situations. We think differently and sometimes need a bit more leverage to do the same job. Having a female mentor's perspective has been crucial in making changes to make me a better shipmate and mariner."

SEXUAL ASSAULT & VIOLENCE ERADICATION

S.A.V.E. PROGRAM

Women working in offshore environments have experienced interpersonal violence encompassing a spectrum of psychological, physical, and sexual harm including but not limited to gaslighting, stalking, bullying, physical assault, and sexual assault. A climate and culture where these adverse behaviors from harassment to assault occur contributes to an increase in sexual violence. There are short and long-term impacts of sexual violence on overall health and well-being. Each survivor reacts to sexual violence in their own unique way and an assault may impact daily life whether it occurred recently or many years ago

2022 S.A.V.E. PROGRAM IMPACT

S.A.V.E. Program initiatives focus on systemic changes for both prevention and response to eradicate sexual misconduct. In 2022, the program affected changes in the following areas: reporting, education, awareness, and legislation.

Guided Victims in Reporting to Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS)

Social Media Content on How and When to Report

Sexual Misconduct

Educated Industry through Response Training
