Publisher’s Notes

Home Sweet Home I am sitting at my computer, writing this column and smiling, thinking about how spring is just around the corner. This winter has been as mild as last winter was brutal. I’ve had to put my winter coat on many times, but I’ve also gone out with a warm vest and no coat. Hey…it’s Nebraska! I have lived here my entire life. There’s a part of me that feels like that’s kind of weird. My sister Pam lives in Portland, Oregon. My sister Patte has lived in lots of different places. She is now residing in Florida. Me? Omaha. My three brothers (Tom, Steve, and Greg) all stayed right here—Omaha. It’s great because I have three great sisters-in-law nearby, plus nieces and nephews that I get to share my life with. My daughter, Carissa, her husband, Ken, and my two granddaughters, Savannah and McKenna, are here. My son, Adam, followed his heart, and he and his wife, Sam, now live in Denver. They love the mountains and the great outdoors. Their dog, Doug, loves hiking in the mountains with them. I have traveled all over this country. I will admit that there are places out there that are more beautiful. For example, I love the ocean. Don’t have any of that here! I have spent a week or two in warmer climates during the tough months. No matter how cold it is when I get back to Omaha, it always feels good to come back home. My husband, Manny, came from Los Angeles. He loves it here. He came to Omaha as a Navy recruiter in 1999 and came back when he retired. It’s fascinating to me that a man who has been around the world 14 times chose Omaha as his home. Over the 20 years of Manny’s career in the Navy, he lived in Italy, Japan, Hawaii, and San Diego, just to name a few, and he chose Omaha. Why? The people, he says. Well, we all know it wasn’t the weather! My granddaughter, Savannah, has plans to attend college in Colorado. She is only 15 years old, but she knows what university she wants to attend and what degrees she will be going for. Wow! She is one very bright young woman who knows what she wants. (My secret wish is that she will eventually work her way back home.) Nebraskans are special people. We care about others. We are generally friendly, outgoing, caring, loving people. Yes, we can be set in our ways. Yes, we can be stubborn. Hey…look how long we’ve supported the Huskers! The bottom line is, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. There is no place like Nebraska. Come on, spring! We’ll talk next month.

Warmer Weather is on the Way! Let Spring Inspire Your Fashion By Holly Bell

Winter woes will shortly be behind us as we look forward to spring break! Nothing could be more welcome during cold weather than a little warm sunshine, green trees, and blooming flowers. Designers have wisely taken the hint in their vacation apparel. This season’s shows also celebrated inclusion and diversity. Spring runways were filled with models of every age, size, and ethnicity. Hooray! It’s about time designers designed for real people! A fun and retro focus in this spring’s clothing and accessories will be detailing such as crochet, patchworks, and raffia. Shine is still in season (way past the holidays!), with plenty of sequins and shimmery fabrics making their way into sundresses, summer tops, and swimwear. We can also expect to welcome longer shorts. Last year, short-shorts were everywhere, but this year’s fashionistas will be sporting a longer, more Bermuda-length short. These will feature everything from fun-patterned, loose styles for the beach to tailored suit looks for the office. Still big news this season will be the focus on jumpsuits. Brought back a couple of seasons ago, this force is still with us for summer. The romper’s big sister is ultra-comfy and creates an easy one-step trendy look that doesn’t even require shaving your legs! You can dress it down with flip-flops to throw over a bathing suit or dress it up with this season’s hot belt trend: the chain belt. Add some wedge sandals and dangly earrings, and you are ready for a night out. It just isn’t spring without some bold, beautiful florals. Big blooms on a dark background are very flattering, whether they’re worn on a sundress or a bathing suit. Bathing suits will reflect all the trends this year. You will see leopard prints and polka dots, along with those dark-background florals. A less-pleasant fashion chore for many women is trying on swimwear in front of those unforgiving dressing room mirrors. It’s a trial, ladies, but it has to be done! Let’s take a look at a few hints to help you find the right suit for your body. Small-chested women look good in a deep v-cut suit. Keep it chic and simple, and keep the focus on the neckline for perfect flattery. A low-cut back would also be a good choice for those who are smaller up top. To bring attention to a small waist, consider a one-piece suit with waist definition such as ruching or cutouts. A lower neckline is perfect for you, also. Pear-shaped bodies (when the hips are the widest part) look best with a higher-cut leg style. This cut makes the legs seem longer and narrows the hips. Choose a style that has some upper body focus, such as a one-shoulder look or pattern on the top, to deflect attention from the hip area. The most common swimsuit problem for a lot of women is tummy bulge. How can we camouflage it and still be comfortable? First, realize that you are going to have to buy a good quality swimsuit with soft stretch and control. This means that it will be a little more expensive, but it’s worth it. I find that the most flattering shape is the mock crossover panel front. This creates a v-shaped neckline and a diagonal line over the tummy, which is very slimming and also looks glamorous.

Stop in today! Many people tend to shy away from prints when it comes to swimwear, as they think it adds pounds. In fact, just the opposite is true. An eye-catching print will do just that—catch the eye and draw it away from whatever you believe to be your problem areas. Animal prints are great for camouflage and are very trendy this year. A one-shoulder look is very hot also, especially for women who prefer a one-piece suit but want a shot of style to add interest to the top half of the body. Crisscross or lace-up neckline looks are a big trend for bathing suits, along with crisscross and lace-up tank tops. The great thing about a crisscross tank top is that you can wear the same top so many ways. It looks great under anything that is a little too low in the front, and it adds interest in the back when the crisscross is worn on the back. You can layer it or wear it by itself, topped with a jacket. My advice is to purchase one in every color! Now that we are in a spring state of mind, let’s go visit the stores and get inspired for the first warm getaway of the season! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

When Magic Comes Knocking, Open the Door! The Next Millennium Books and Gifts

By Jackie Byers

Cindy and Charlie Odorizzi, the husband-and-wife team that co-owns Magical Omaha and The Next Millennium Books and Gifts, know that they were meant to meet. Cindy recalls a decades-old palm reading that showed she should expect a major life disruption at age 28. At the time, she did not take it seriously. She was 23 years old and single, flying to Philadelphia for a great new job. Charlie, a total stranger, was headed to Philadelphia after serving his country. Are you thinking they met in Philadelphia? Nope. At the last minute, Cindy’s job fell through. She stayed in Omaha with family. At the last minute, Charlie reenlisted. He later came to Omaha hoping to make his passion his career. One Christmas Eve, they were flying on the same plane into Eppley. Charlie was in the front, having fun and singing carols. Cindy, in the back, ignored the celebration. Are you thinking they met at baggage claim? Wrong again. They deplaned at Eppley without making contact. Later, Cindy joined her sister’s softball team, but spring rain cancelled most of the games. For one game, For one game, Cindy was the only one to show up at the park. Now that there was no game, she decided to visit a nearby shop. She stood in the doorway as a noisy crowd rushed toward her, hoping to be out of the way. As it turns out, Charlie was leading that crowd, and Cindy was standing in the doorway of a shop where Charlie was reading palms. They met then and there, and they got married soon after. Together, they opened The Next Millennium Books and Gifts, and later the webstore www.MagicalOmaha.com. “Charlie and I discovered so many missed meetings after we married,” Cindy says. “Charlie reads palms, but never his own. We have to agree that magic happens.” They know their meeting was magical, and their commitment to their business is stronger because of it. They’ve been in business since 1996, Cindy notes, “and now we have a store, several websites, and lots of fun.” From scented candles, fashion accessories, and books to works of art, jewelry, and tarot decks, they offer many great gifts for yourself or someone you love. They also sell Renaissance costumes and have a huge rock room, loaded with polished stones and crystals. Each stone in the rock room has different properties, Cindy explains. “Blue lapis lazuli is a popular stone with watery energy. It is particularly good for us in the Midwest, since we are located so far away from the oceans. Amethyst in all shades of purple releases blockage and helps control over-indulgence.” Both

12

March 2020

of these stones are popular and difficult to keep in stock. “Carnelian is little known but Owner Cindy Odorizzi marvelous,” Cindy continues. “It varies from soft peach to dark brown. It is associated with joy and poise. Black tourmaline is a cleansing stone. Crystal quartz amplifies the powers of other stones.” Exploring the rock room is only the beginning of an adventure at Magical Omaha. If you’ve never had your palm read, now is your chance. Cindy smiles. “Look what palmistry promised me! It came joyfully true.” Their decorated tarot decks are works of art, and the shop also offers professional tarot readings. “Tarot decks have cards in four suits: wands, cups, swords, and pentacles,” Cindy explains. “The client shuffles the deck, cuts it, and hands it to the reader, who deals only the top 10 cards.” The cards gain significance from the order in which they are dealt. “The last card is some sort of final outcome. Tarot deck symbols are often misunderstood. The ominous-sounding Hanged Man, for example, has positive meanings.” Cindy handles the website and ordering for their businesses; Charlie takes care of the day-today operation of the stores. Twice a year, they hold a festival, named Mystic Fest, at the Mid-America Center. Their next spring festival is scheduled for May 16th and 17th. It will feature palm and tarot readings, as well as aura photography. “The aura camera resembles an old Polaroid. The colors of the aura indicate the subject’s mood and more,” Cindy explains. “Last year, a pregnant woman’s photograph showed her baby’s aura.” “Our festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday,” Cindy concludes. “There is so much to see and do, with merchandise galore. Browsers are always welcome at these family-friendly events.” Come on out and learn something new! A Woman’s Work

The Beauty of Ordinary Everyday Memories By Sharon Knierim

Have you ever noticed that when something really important is happening to you or in your life, that it feels like a silent and unseen photographer is snapping photos and placing them in your memory? You know that you will remember these moments for the rest of your life. These precious seconds become part of who you are. You know even when the event is happening that this will be with you forever and there won’t be any need to refresh your memory with pictures. It’s the ordinary days, though, that fill in lots of memory chips. Life must really be about those ordinary days. Life might be a little too hectic if we met our new husband every day, we won the lottery every Saturday night, vacations lasted for no less than six months, and we had to look at newborns all the time. The poetry of life is its normalcy. There’s a rhythm to the ordinary. I like those quiet days. No guests are standing at my front door peering through the glass. No pot roasts are over-done. We don’t have to be anywhere if we don’t want to be. This is living. These are memories. The best days are ordinary Sundays. If we take the kids to church, they like to complain about wearing clothes that actually fit. They look extremely uncomfortable in clothing that is not seven or eight sizes too big and doesn’t have any messages or

advertisements on the front. Their shoes actually have a back on them, and shoestrings! Oh, my gosh—shoestrings, tied in neat little bows. I love that. During the children’s sermon, our son explains to the entire parish how his daddy helps him fly his “Bug Off” kite and what words his daddy uses when the kite nosedives into a mud puddle. We offer up special prayers that the little guy will forget where we are sitting and maybe join some other family who is desperately praying for another child. If you’re a parent, you know this is just another ordinary day… but ordinary is good. People who are comfortable with each other or who have perhaps lived together for a long time embrace the ordinary. They welcome it. After church, we treat the entire family to lunch in an ethnic restaurant. Naturally, the children pass up the Wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, and dumplings to order hot

dogs and French fries. They ask for the ketchup. I know they are going to do this. It’s so ordinary. When we arrive at home again, everyone shucks their dressy clothes before I can take a photo. That’s okay because I can’t find my phone to take a photo anyway. None of the children can remember how to put their clothing on hangers or where their closets are. Their fancy shoes are returned to their “wrongful” spot just inside the front door, and there’s a path of sweaty socks from the living room to the refrigerator. Just as always, they attack the refrigerator. There was nothing edible there before church and nobody has been grocery shopping this morning but still...there’s the possibility that the food fairy might have dropped in while we were gone for a couple of hours and filled our empty refrigerator. It’s a long shot, but you never know. Sound ordinary? You bet it is, and that’s what most of us like. Who among us hasn’t stood outdoors wrapped in blankets to watch the twilight with our loved ones? Don’t we all have “popcorn night” when what we really want is a steak in a fancy restaurant? We might not climb the Eiffel Tower every day, but most of us take time to run up the hill and fly a kite or attack the playground equipment like there’s no tomorrow. Maybe the ordinary happens in the middle of our lives when there’s nothing monumental happening. Age doesn’t have anything to do with it. All generations have the ordinary, and grandparents and parents and even the kiddos participate together in building memories—those precious moments of just plain old everyday living that mean so much and stay with us forever. It’s those beautiful moments and days—those ordinary days that are somehow set apart and made special by their quality of appreciation. We know when we crawl into bed at night that we’ve had a wonderfully ordinary day. The day was experienced in the heart just as it happened. It was lived beautifully and simply and absolutely fully. Agendas, deadlines, and stress have no place in the ordinary. No photo or video can record the beauty of ordinary. These normal days are recorded in the book of memories we all carry in our hearts and minds—days and moments we never forget. Enjoy your ordinary days! WE

Laughter for a Lifetime

Because I Said So Expectations of A Parent By Sharon Knierim

As we were growing up in the 1950s and the 1960s, manners were still considered very important. Our own mother could have written a newspaper column much like Emily Post did. While it is true that we lived on a farm out in the middle of nowhere, we did enjoy plenty of social contact. To ensure that our social skills did not wither, nearly everyone we knew practiced good manners and decorum. Those who did not exhibit good behavior were considered unruly. Children with good manners were admired and often invited back into the homes and the company of others with the same precious beliefs in social savvy. Manners seemed important to the survival of culture as we knew it! With five children to raise, our mother enrolled us all in her informal charm school. Don’t get me wrong—we were never challenged to balance books on our heads or practice elocution with marbles in our mouths. Instead, we were constantly but gently schooled in socially acceptable behaviors. You know the ones I’m talking about. Like most parents, my mother wanted us to be pleasing to the adults around us and to be tolerable to the dozens of children we played with. At an early age, the five of us nestlings began to learn what kinds of habits were shocking to the people around us, which behaviors were merely acceptable, and what pleasantries would earn us the title of “good kids.” My mother was no dummy. In her litter of five children, she managed to give birth to three perfect kids. More astounding was the fact that these models of behavior were alternately placed before the “not-so-perfect” kiddos. I will never know if this was luck or some crazy kind of family planning, but it worked. Long before mentoring was in style, the black sheep could depend on the white sheep among us for examples of good deportment. Of course, that didn’t always work, but the odds were pretty good that we would emulate that terrific older sibling. There were no written rules to follow. There was no behavior chart tacked up on the pantry wall and, thankfully, there was no corporal punishment for social faux pas. We lived by the examples observed in others and by hoping to make our parents proud of us. Although there were no specific rules, we did follow a certain mantra. One of my mother’s favorite gentle reminders to us when we were preparing to meet people was, “Act like you know something.” Although I never understood what she meant (she often spoke cryptically), that little phrase kept me busy during all social outings. I’ve never asked my siblings what they thought she meant by “acting like we knew something,” but I’d be willing to bet the farm that they were mystified, too. Whatever she meant by it, that little warning seemed to rein me in when in public. Most of the time, I tried to make people think that I did know something. For the most part, I pretended to know something that they didn’t. It’s not always easy to make friends when you’re going about acting like you know state secrets, however.

18

March 2020

Some people might have thought I was a bit strange, but at least I didn’t create too many problems. “Don’t gawk,” my mother would remind us. We liked watching people and their idiosyncrasies, but it would send my mother into a tailspin if she caught us staring unblinkingly at other people with our mouths hanging wide open. Over the years, I developed a pattern of staring at people that involved lots of blinking while holding my breath or at least not breathing through my mouth. Because it made it hard to breathe, this was not a foolproof plan, but it did work for occasional bursts of people-watching. Other rules of decorum included, “No running in town,” and “No hollering in public.” Running in town was considered barbaric, and it then brought unwanted attention to children who were better off not bringing attention to themselves. Bare legs were always covered in public. Unbelievably, in the not-too-distant past, young girls wore dresses all the time. Shorts were not the standard uniform for young girls, so, we sweat it down during those long and hot summer months when we were seen in public wearing a dress, a petticoat, shoes, and socks. What was the outcome of all of these social rules? I think we fared pretty well. My mother was always pleased when she received a compliment on our deportment. I always thought she resembled a mother hen proud of her brood. She took on a peculiar glow when someone took the time to tell her how nice her children were. Years later, I felt the same way when someone praised my own children. It is rewarding to learn that your work at parenting has garnered some good results. Of course, there’s a second harvest to all of these rules and compliments. Children enjoy being praised for good behavior and that good feeling often promotes more good behavior. For the most part, our parents wanted us to act with some sense of dignity when we appeared in public. They wanted to be proud of us. They were aware that their children’s behavior was a direct reflection of their value system and skills as parents. But naturally, any rule handed down from parents to their offspring brings with it some questions. There is a sense of curiosity among children regarding why things must be done a certain way. These questions often arise when they notice other children not behaving in the same manner. Being children, we simply had to ask. “Why?” Being a parent, my mother simply had to reply, “Because I said so.” WE

Fresh Concept

Custom Home Building Creating Your Dream Home By Angella A. Arndt

I’m sure there are many things you love about your current home, but wouldn’t it be amazing to have a home designed to meet the specific needs of your family and your lifestyle? If you’re considering a brand-new home, custom home building may be worth a look. Custom-built homes are unique and represent your personal style. You’ll have flexibility with the design, architecture, and location. You’ll get to choose amenities that suit your lifestyle—things like entertaining spaces, fitness rooms, theater rooms, sunrooms, and outdoor living. Multigenerational living is becoming more common, and you can design a home to comfortably accommodate extended family living. Create a home for your own future with universal design features such as wider doors, lower countertops, and fewer stairs. Choose technological systems to remotely control features such as home security, home audio systems, lighting, and heating and cooling. A custom-built home gives you the flexibility to decide what’s most important to you in a home. Once you’ve decided to build a custom home, you’ll need to establish a budget. Your budget will determine the size of the home you can build, possible locations, and what design elements you can incorporate. When selecting your location, factor in property taxes and any local fees. A custom-built home may include fees for architects, engineers, home builders and contractors, landscapers, and interior designers. Home construction costs are the most significant expenditure, and a budget is crucial to avoid cost overruns. Include the cost of new furnishings in your budget. Lastly, add a contingency budget for unexpected expenses during the construction process. There are many options available to finance a custom home. Essential items to consider when selecting a mortgage include the down payment, mortgage length, interest rate, insurance requirements, and other terms. Mortgage loans to consider include conventional loans, FHA loans, and VA loans. Many conventional loans require larger down payments; some loans may accept less but will require mortgage insurance. FHA loans are backed by the federal government and require a lower minimum down payment and credit score. This type of loan has loan limits and restrictions, as well as mortgage insurance premiums. Veterans may apply for a VA loan, which does not require a down payment. (For more information on mortgages, turn to page 60.) New construction loans are short-term loans used during the construction process, which are then converted to a long-term loan of 15 to 30 years. If you haven’t sold your current home, you may want a bridge loan. This type of loan uses the equity in your current home to obtain a short-term loan; proceeds from the sale of your house are used to pay off the bridge loan. Some builders may offer financing packages through relationships with mortgage companies. What’s true in all of real estate is true of custom

homes, too: location, location, location! Aside from the cost of the land, your site will determine what you’re able to do with your house. Learn about the housing development, zoning restrictions, utility availability, maintenance, and school district associated with any lots you like. If you’re building in a subdivision, find out if your home’s design and landscaping need to be approved and whether there are covenants, restrictions, or fees to consider. Zoning may affect items such as your home’s size, height, and setback from the street. Find out how utilities such as power, water, waste, gas, phone, and internet services are provided. You’ll want to know who handles maintenance items such as snow removal and trash removal. Get information on the neighborhood’s demographics— are there younger families with children, or is it an older, quieter neighborhood? If you have children, learn about the school district. Is the location convenient for you to get to work? Lastly, think about what your chosen location might look like in five or 10 years. If your property is located near undeveloped land or adjacent to a main street, the possibility of commercial development and street-widening should be factored into your decision. Doing your research will help you avoid unexpected issues down the road. Don’t forget that there are professionals who can help you navigate this process. You’re not in this alone! Architects are trained to help you through the custom home building process. They see the overall picture and will help you design a home that meets your needs and budget. You and your architect will work together to create a personalized floor plan. Making changes to your floor plan during the design phase is more cost-efficient than changing your mind during construction. Once you decide on your final floor plan, your architect will provide you with detailed drawings and specifications to obtain bids from contractors. Your architect can also help you during the construction process by making site visits, reviewing and approving payments to the contractor, and keeping you informed.

www.womensedition.com

While designing your home, you’ll also need to make decisions about materials and finishes, such as flooring, wall coverings, countertops, lighting, and window treatments. Interior designers have expertise in both design and aesthetics and can visualize the completed project. They understand how lighting, textures, furniture, and flow impact the mood of a space. These professionals can also guide you in selecting reliable vendors for many of the components in your home. An interior designer can be a valuable partner in creating a space that represents your style. How do you choose the builder for your custom home? Ask your architect or interior designer for contractors to interview. Building a home is one of the most significant investments you will make, and there are several questions you should ask when interviewing builders. For example, how many years has the builder been in business, and how many homes has the company built during that time? Can you tour one of them (or a model home)? Will they provide references from previous clients? Are they licensed? Do they have insurance? What is their new home warranty? You’ll also want to ask questions about the services they offer. Do you have to use plans they have, or will they accept a custom set of plans? What standard features do they offer? What about upgrade options? Do they provide energy-saving features? Questions about the logistics of construction are important, too. How is the change process handled during construction? What access will you have to the home during the construction process, and how are inspections handled? Who is your contact person? How is the final price of the home determined, and when will you receive your bid? Questions such as these will help you select the right builder for your home. Ask your builder for specifics, but you can expect it to take up

to 24 months to build your custom home. This timeframe includes pre-construction items such as hiring your team (architect, interior designer, builder), selecting a site, designing the home, obtaining a loan, and getting the appropriate permits. The pre-construction process can take nine to 12 months. The construction process can take up to 12 months and depends on variables such as the size and complexity of the project, site preparation, availability of supplies, design changes, and weather delays. Hiring a good team and bringing a willingness to collaborate to the table will help set expectations and minimize the timeframe needed to build your home. Need some design ideas to get you started? Architectural Digest has identified some of the top design trends for 2020. Warm neutrals in off-whites, tinted grays, earthy ochers, and beiges that are reminiscent of connecting with nature are making a comeback. “Soothing minimalism,” inspired by Japanese aesthetics such as simple forms with natural materials, will be popular. Sustainable materials in furniture and fabrics are in demand. The sleek designs and natural tones of European-inspired furniture continue to trend. Home accents with botanical prints, wood grain, and stone veining replications represent a desire to get back to nature. For those who prefer brights over neutrals, modernism represented by bold colors, clean-cut lines, and geometric shapes will have a presence. If you’re in the market for a new home, consider the advantages of custom building. You can get everything you want, just how you want it. You can design and build a home to meet your needs well into the future. Your home will be unique and reflect your personality. Doesn’t that sound fabulous? Walnut Grove Dental Creating Beautiful Smiles By Angella A. Arndt

If your smile needs some work but you’re apprehensive about visiting a dentist, Dr. Heather Wilson and her experienced staff at Walnut Grove Dental can help you. Dr. Wilson takes pride in providing high-quality dental care in a soothing, comfortable atmosphere. She and her team will meet with you and work to develop a personalized dental treatment plan that meets your needs and budget. Their top priority is “creating and maintaining healthy smiles that inspire confidence.” Dr. Wilson always wanted a career in medicine. While in high school, she worked as a certified nursing assistant at a county hospital. Not sure what direction to pursue, she met with a guidance counselor who suggested dentistry. She did some research, shadowed some dentists, and discovered her passion. Dr. Wilson graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 2006. She has been in practice for 14 years and purchased Walnut Grove Dental at the end of 2015. In addition to running her practice, Dr. Wilson teaches part-time in the

They also perform restorative procedures such as dental fillings, root canals, crowns and caps, bridges, implants, and dentures. Dr. Wilson welcomes pediatric patients

and believes in the importance of establishing good oral hygiene at an early age to promote a healthy future. Dr. Wilson is also an artist who has won numerous awards for her paintings and drawings. She has found that cosmetic dentistry is a way that she can incorporate her artistic talents into her dental practice. She offers cosmetic services such as teeth whitening, veneers, ceramic crowns, and bonding. If you’ve thought about whitening your teeth but are prone to sensitivity, there is an option available for you—in 10–20 days, you can have a brighter, whiter smile. Dr. Wilson is also certified to administer Botox and fillers, which help patients achieve a more youthful appearance. One of the most significant rewards of Dr. Wilson’s work is “helping people find their smile again. If we can get them in the door and start a conversation, they will often find that the fix is simpler than they think.” She understands that dental anxiety is an issue for many potential patients and that building trust is essential to alleviating that anxiety. “Come in and meet with us,” she invites. “We’ll listen to you and provide you with options. We’ll proceed slowly and explain everything. There will not be any surprises. Many patients have said it was easier than they thought it would be and that it cost less than they thought it would.” Still anxious? They also offer simple sedation to calm patients with severe anxiety. There are a lot of dentists to choose from in the Omaha community, and Dr. Wilson recommends that we ask several questions of any dentists we’re considering. What type of training do they have? How much experience do they have? What is the scope of their practice? Do they offer basic or comprehensive services? What is their specialty? Do they have a conservative

or aggressive approach? Do they have office hours that work for your schedule? The answers to questions like these will help determine whether a particular dentist is a good fit for you. The office staff plays an integral role in a patient’s experience, and Dr. Wilson is pleased to have “trustworthy staff who take pride in providing excellent patient care.” Her patient care philosophy is simple: “Be upfront, honest, and direct. Patients appreciate my candid style. We take a restorative, conservative approach that is the least invasive for our patients.” Walnut Grove Dental accepts most major insurance plans. However, for patients who do not have dental insurance, the office has its own Dental Discount Plan. Unlike most insurance plans, Walnut Grove Dental’s discount plan does not have an annual maximum benefit, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorization requirements, or pre-existing condition limitations. For a simple annual fee, patients receive two dental exams, two dental cleanings, x-rays, and discounts on other services and procedures. Dr. Wilson developed this plan to help patients without insurance coverage ease the financial worry of obtaining dental care. Walnut Grove Dental is a family practice, and Dr. Wilson enjoys providing dental services to multiple generations of families. “That’s a compliment and a matter of trust,” she concludes, “and I’m proud to see it. Building relationships is just as important as providing high-quality patient care.” Give the office a call, and you’ll be on your way to a beautiful smile. Walnut Grove Dental is located at 5005 South 153rd Street, Suite 206, in Omaha. Call 402-933-7100 to make an appointment. For more information, find them online at walnutgrovesmiles.com. WE

The lounge is a peaceful setting with a large bar, fireplace, and plenty of seating room. The overflow room provides extra space for large crowds from either the lounge or ballroom. Caterers enjoy the venue because they have direct access to the kitchen area and an elevator to deliver their food to the reception area. The second floor serving area provides plenty of room to prepare for that special meal presentation. Decorations are only needed on the tables, as the character of the building lends a stunning atmosphere to the evening. The lounge area is second to none, with its marble-topped bar and fireplace to make conversation leisurely and fun. Lighting throughout the reception and ballroom area can be set to fit the occasion. Aislinn Medical Spa Dream, Believe, Achieve

By Cynthia Jeffrey

You’ve known them for years as Devenu Medical Rejuvenation Center. You’ve loved their services and referred your friends. You’ve given them your trust and wouldn’t have asked them to change a thing. Well, change is inevitable, and the people at Devenu are excited to tell you about some of the changes they’re making, including new ownership, a new name, a new location, and new services! What you can expect to stay the same is, well, everything else—their skills, their compassion, and their dedication to helping their clients look and feel their very best. Introducing Aislinn Medical Spa! They’re delighted to be providing primary health care options together with your aesthetic choices. You can have your medical and cosmetic needs met within one stop. It also means that your care providers will be working together to optimize your health from the inside out. According to Don Darst, Midwest Regional Health Services CEO, they understand that “unconscious choices impact overall health issues.” Sometimes, a

choice you’ve made in one area of your life or health can greatly affect other areas, whether you expected it or not! By bringing providers together, they plan to address all aspects of your health together— physical, emotional, and aesthetic. The practice is making the move to Gretna and will offer primary care, therapists, and of course, aesthetic services to all current and new clients. Shelly Henderson (CIO) and Jennifer Rohwer (marketing) are vital parts of the team. Dr. Julie Waddell will continue to serve as medical director. Her relationship-building philosophy includes the

idea of meeting people where they are. She works to educate every client about the available options but never tries to sell a service to someone who doesn’t want it. She integrates quality services that produce reliable outcomes, and she’s great at it— just ask the client base she built as medical director at Devenu! “Amazing treatment, amazing staff!” raves client Sheila. “Dr. Julie Waddell was so attentive, making sure I was a priority. Excellent service.” Client Kaitlinn adds that she is “so impressed with how knowledgeable the staff are! Originally planned on getting a facial. However, after talking with the aesthetician Mikaila, I switched to dermaplaning. Best decision ever. My skin feels so soft and smooth now!” We all know that there are aesthetic services that will help us look and feel better as we age, but many of us are just not sure where to start. We’ve heard of things like Botox and fillers, but we’re not sure what is the best fit for us. Aislinn Medical Spa offers a complimentary consultation, during which your provider will guide you through affordable options that fit your aesthetic needs and lifestyle. These caring professionals understand that if you’re not happy with your results, you won’t come back. They’ve built their business on happy clients and their referrals. You can also undergo a detailed skin test that outlines multiple layers of skin damage that aren’t noticeable to the naked eye. This test provides an objective level of assessment based upon your own unique needs. We all know that when we

look better, we feel better…and feeling better leads to increased confidence, energy, and longevity! Aislinn Medical Spa sends special thanks to their current customers by offering a referral program. For every person you refer to the medical spa, they will credit your account with $25 toward any service. Don’t forget their monthly aesthetics membership! Make sure to inquire about that during your next visit. Ladies, it’s okay to put yourselves first. You cannot pour from an empty cup! Taking time for yourself allows you to reenergize and be restored from the inside out. What a gift for yourself! Services at Aislinn Medical Spa can also be a thoughtful gift for a woman (or man) in your life who understands the importance of selfcare. If you aren’t sure what services your loved ones would choose, simply give gift certificates and let them decide what’s best for them. Aging, hormonal changes, chemical imbalances, and stress all play their parts in our daily lives, but you don’t need to be living less than optimally. Allow the full entourage at Aislinn Medical Spa to help you feel better— it’s what they do! If you are feeling the effects of the tougher parts of life, give them a call at 402-397-2300 to make an appointment. They will soon be the newest members of Gretna’s Chamber of Commerce and look forward to offering their services to you! Look for them at 818 Village Square, in Gretna, starting this month. WE

Good Looks

From Flab to Fab Eliminating Body Fat

By Loretta McCollum

Do you feel that your shape is looking a little shabby? Do you have portly pooches or bulges that just won’t budge? Perhaps you feel as if your weight is out of control and it’s affecting your health? No matter what your situation, there’s never been a better time to consider body fat reduction. There are more options available now than ever before! From minimally invasive injections to general surgery, there’s a weight loss tool for everyone. “Tool” is the key word here. All of the procedures discussed in this article are just that—tools to help you achieve a healthier, shapelier you. It’s important to remember that lifestyle changes, including good nutrition and adequate exercise, will go a long way to ensure long-term results. Let’s begin with liposuction, one of the best-known choices for area-specific body contouring and definition. This is an optimal selection if you want to trim just a few inches. It’s commonly used on the abdomen, back, legs, and buttocks. Local anesthetic is administered before a surgeon inserts a hollow tube into the target area, suctioning out excess fat cells. Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance (VASER) liposuction is a relatively new development that utilizes ultrasonic frequency waves to break down fat cells before they’re removed. A metal rod emitting ultrasonic energy is inserted under the skin, rup-

turing the fat cells for easier removal. Another option is laser-assisted liposuction. This involves applying high-intensity laser light via a laser fiber that is inserted into the skin through a small incision. Liposuction involves minimal damage to surrounding tissue, but you should still expect a recovery period. No matter which liposuction procedure is performed, patients can anticipate bruising and swelling for several days after the procedure and should restrict their activity as needed. The results of liposuction are permanent— that is, the removed fat cells are gone forever. However, there’s no guarantee that you won’t gain weight again after your procedure. For long-term success after liposuction, you’ll need to maintain a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and physical activity. A vagal blockade (VBLOC) is one of the latest innovations in body fat reduction. The vagus nerve helps regulate stomach function. A VBLOC procedure involves the surgeon implanting a ›››

pacemaker-like device along the vagus. This device sends electronic impulses to signal the brain that the stomach is full. It is controlled by an adjustable remote located outside the body. The surgery is minimally invasive and has produced favorable results with a low risk of complications. Restrictive weight loss surgeries are more aggressive options for those with a significant amount of weight to lose. These surgeries change how you take in food and drastically reduce the amount of food that you are physically able to consume. Gastric banding is one of these procedures. The surgeon uses an inflatable band to divide the stomach into two connected sections—upper and lower. The process of the upper section emptying into the lower section is slowed down, resulting in a feeling of being full. Patients typically ingest a maximum of one cup of food at a time. The size of the band can be adjusted as needed, and the band can be removed entirely, reversing the procedure. In a sleeve gastrectomy, 75 percent of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow sleeve for food to pass through. Unlike gastric banding, this procedure is irreversible, and it is designed for patients who are significantly obese. As with gastric banding, patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy have a reduced stomach area, which means they feel full after eating a much smaller amount of food. A full gastric bypass is one of the most invasive and complicated weight loss surgeries. Like gastric banding, a gastric bypass divides the stomach into upper and lower sections. However, with gastric bypass, the two sections are sealed off from one another. This creates a shortcut for food, bypassing part of the stomach and the small intestine. When food avoids passing through the small intestine, the body absorbs fewer calories. In the beginning, patients may consume as little as one or two ounces of food at a time, resulting in rapid weight loss. Nutrient absorption can also be reduced, meaning that patients need to consult with their physician about supplements that may be required to ensure a healthy diet. Common post-surgery complications include stomach pain and nausea. Close monitoring, and even lifestyle therapy, can help ensure continued success after gastric bypass surgery. No matter which option you choose, make sure to seek out board-certified physicians who are experienced in body-shaping and weight-loss procedures. Shifting Karma Don’t Absorb Others’ Anger Have you ever had the experience of meeting up with someone who is just…shall we say…angry? It might be someone you meet in a business situation. It might be your server at lunch. It might be your child’s elementary school teacher. A person like this may not even say anything directly to you…but you still find yourself recoiling. The energy that these people emanate can feel physically painful.

manifesting itself into anger; at times, I matched it and responded in kind. By reacting to others’ anger with my own anger, I was hurting myself and others around me. “How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.”—Wayne Dyer This reality came full circle for me when, years ago, I read an article that gave me a totally different slant on angry people. I do not remember who wrote it, but it really opened my eyes. It said that, if we saw someone fall down in the street and break a leg, most of us would run out to help. We would be kind, as gentle as we could possibly be, to help that person. What the article recommended was to view someone who is angry, mean, or spiteful as someone with a compound fracture of the leg. Instead of having the knee-jerk reaction of giving it right back to angry people, I should instead treat them with the utmost care and respect. Since I have started this practice, I have found that I am a happier person. I have found that I am a calmer person. I have also found that, at times, it not only helps me, it also helps them. Try it!

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” —Mark Twain Years ago, I would find myself having a knee-jerk reaction to other people’s anger. Before I knew what had happened, I was caught up in their negative energy, sucking it into my soul and pushing it out to the next person I came into contact with. Ouch. “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”—Philo As I matured, I began to gain an understanding that, more often than not, the person who was angry was in serious personal pain. For some, it was physical pain that I could not see. For others, it was emotional pain…which I also could not see. This pain was

“A Rose by Any Other Name…” What Name Do You Use? We often paraphrase Shakespeare’s “That which we call a rose/By any other name would smell as sweet.” Juliet was trying to say that the name doesn’t make the man, but we all know that our names are important to us. How do we choose them? Some kids get family names. In my family, Clifford the Second was named for his paternal grandfather, Clifford the First. Cliff was not “Junior” because of the generation between them. My brother was named after our father, Walter Bryan. Mom and Dad called him Bryan (and sometimes Bub or Bubby) because they didn’t want him called Junior, either. Bryan’s oldest son, also Dad’s namesake, goes by Walt. I’m Margaret. Grandma’s middle name was Margaret; I’ve always thought I was named after her. My Aunt Marguerite might also have been an influence. The family calls me Margie. Friends know me as Marge. Our brother is Douglas Robert. Neither is a family name. Dad served in the Pacific in World War II, so it’s possible that Douglas MacArthur’s popularity at the time influenced their choice. I regret never asking Mom how she and Dad chose our names. We didn’t name any of our kids after relatives. Pre-birth, we called the kids Ralph or Baby Shoe. After trying several names for the oldest, we decided on Jeffrey Miles. Geoffrey, while literary, hinted at the nickname Goof, we thought. Why Miles? He was born the day after Thanksgiving (Miles Standish), and one of Cliff’s favorite musicians was Miles Davis. He goes by Jeff.

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

We named our second son Scott for no reason except that we liked the name. We considered Victor as a middle name, but Grandpa said he’d never liked his middle name and didn’t want his grandson saddled with it. We ultimately ended up with Scott David because we liked the way they sounded together. Our daughter is Lori. We considered naming her after her grandmothers. Angela May (their middle names) had possibilities. I had a good friend named Sarah Lee in college, but Cliff vetoed that, saying she’d be called Cupcake. Lori Annette was turned down because it sounded like opera glasses. We ended up with Lori Michelle. It suits her! Some kids go by their initials. A cousin is a Junior who goes by JR. A friend is JR simply because there’s another Jerry in the group. A former student told me, “I go by ‘CF’ like my Gramps. That’s what he’s called.” (I can only guess Gramps’ given name.) Some parents start or end names with the same letter or strive for identical family monograms. Kids are often named after famous people, places, or things. Parents, beware! What kids are called has an impact, and their nicknames are often chosen by their peers. Some names may evoke bad memories or breed teasing. How did (or will) you name yours? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

The Ultimate Staycation Create an Outdoor Retreat

By Robyn V. Powell

Finding the time to pull together a summer vacation can be a challenge. It’s no surprise that a growing number of homeowners are opting out of a traditional vacation and are instead choosing a staycation. The growing desire to spend more quality time at home, coupled with advances in home technology, have led to the rapid growth of the outdoor living industries. There are more options than ever for transforming your backyard into an outdoor oasis. Adding a pool, spa, or kitchen enhances your outdoor living space and promotes a healthy lifestyle built around relaxing with family and entertaining friends. A well-designed outdoor space can boost the value of your home, as well. Get ready to take the plunge and transform your backyard into the staycation location of your dreams! Many areas require a certain distance between a home and a pool, so it’s vital to work with a professional pool installer in your area who knows the local building codes and regulations. Once you know how much space you have, you can design a pool with features that fit your lifestyle. The growing demand for pools means more styles and features than ever before. Pools can be built in all shapes and sizes—lap pools, diving pools, even cocktail pools! One of the leading pool trends is darker interior finishes. Deeper tones are naturally evocative of a lagoon and pair well with rock features and waterfalls. Beautiful decorative tiling around the waterline

is another popular trend. Luxury finishes open up endless possibilities to transform pool decks, patio areas, and landscape features. Built-in bars have become the ultimate pool accessory. You don’t have to fly to Mexico or Hawaii to enjoy a refreshing poolside drink. Whether you desire a swim-up bar with submerged seating or a bar directly adjacent to the pool, built-in bars can be customized to your exact preferences. For an inviting ambience, the combination of fire and water creates an element of drama that is hard to beat. Fire bowls located near water features make for stunning focal points. LED lighting is another great way to enhance outdoor living. Advances in technology allow color and brightness to change or dim on demand, making it easy to transform your area into a different mood for different occasions. Technology is also making it easier to maintain pools. Every- ›››

thing from temperature control to lighting is seamlessly controlled with a smartphone app. Automated systems work to better control the filtering and cleaning of your pool, reducing energy costs while protecting the environment. When it comes to heating your pool, water heat pumps are efficient and environmentally friendly, with lower operating costs than gas heaters. Gas heaters, on the other hand, have the advantage of heating water more quickly. If you use your pool only on weekends versus every day, gas heating operating costs can be less expensive in the long run. When creating your backyard oasis, consider a hot tub or spa. Spas provide a relaxing vibe while helping to reduce stress and relieve joint pain. When temperatures dip, spas extend the time you can enjoy your outdoor space. If massage is important to you, look for spas with adjustable back and leg jets. Portable spas are typically made of molded fiberglass and can be positioned almost anywhere on a concrete surface or a reinforced wooden deck. Concrete spas are often built into in-ground pools, creating a sleekly integrated and stylish aesthetic. Entertainment systems can be integrated, setting the scene for complete relaxation. For many homeowners, a pool represents the cornerstone to outdoor fun and healthy outdoor living, but the pool is only one part of the equation. Your outdoor space is not complete without amenities like seating and dining areas. Outdoor kitchens expand your living space and are ideal for entertaining, creating an area where guests can hang out with the cook. There’s a trend toward more tailored outdoor kitchens, with sophisticated features like smokers, wine fridges, ice makers, pizza ovens, and grills equipped with rotisseries. Building an outdoor kitchen requires special knowledge and skills. Landscape architects, kitchen designers, and contractors can all build outdoor kitchens. It’s important to choose a company that has completed many projects. Request references and visit past projects so you can judge the workmanship and ask former clients how the work has held up. As with any home project, be sure to get everything in writing. Cooking, entertaining, and enjoying each other’s company in the comfort of your own backyard provides a fun, healthy, and stress-free getaway. Turn your backyard into a summer paradise, and you can sit back and enjoy the staycation of your dreams. BodyWise Therapy Get More Than Temporary Pain Relief By Linda Sutherland

Imagine, if you will, suffering for years with recurring pain that just keeps coming, even after treatment. Of course, some of us don’t need to imagine it—we’re living it. If this sounds like you or someone you love, I have great news! The road to recovery is within reach, thanks to BodyWise Therapy. If you are suffering from recurring inflammation, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, headaches, nerve pain, or lingering symptoms from a past trauma, physical therapist Shanna Paopao may be just who you have been looking for. Shanna is a beacon of hope and healing for many people who have been disappointed with traditional forms of therapy. Shanna practices myofascial release. This is a safe and gentle mind/body therapy that is effective in providing lasting relief for people with chronic pain. Myofascial release involves the process of applying gentle, sustained pressure into areas of pain, tightness, or restriction. This technique should not be confused with deep tissue massage—it is never forceful, and there is no poking or rubbing. Myofascial release manipulates the fascia—the tough connective tissue that we all have in our bodies. This tissue is present throughout the body, creating a three-dimensional web from head to foot, without any interruption. Poor posture, physical trauma, and even simple inflammation can result in the binding down and tightening of the fascia, which can then cause excessive pressure on nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and organs. This pressure can lead to chronic pain. In many cases, the causes of this pain go undiagnosed and continue to plague people for years. Gentle pressure, applied slowly, allows the fascia to elongate again, resulting in relief for patients. John F. Barnes, PT, LMT, perfected and has taught the myofascial release technique since the 1970s, incorporating a series of three major techniques: structural release, rebounding, and unwinding. Shanna has studied his approach, which led her to the path she is on today. Shanna was born in Nebraska and spent most of her early years living in Oregon. She was a patient herself at BodyWise Therapy before she took over the practice. She was being treated for recurring pain that was associated with past sports injuries. She became intrigued by the process of myofascial release and pursued the training courses, which led her to use the technique with some of her traditional physical therapy patients. As she began to see improvement in her patients, she realized that her passion lay in healing with this technique. When the previous owner of BodyWise Therapy was ready to move on in 2014, Shanna took the reins of the business.

40

March 2020

Shanna operates on the theory that pain is your body trying to send you a message. Many people spend time and energy ignoring painful symptoms, thinking that pain is something that they must Owner Shanna Paopao simply come to live with. Many of Shanna’s clients come to her after years of suffering, even despite previous treatments. She treats each patient as an individual and notes that no single treatment formula fits everyone. Her practice philosophy is to “treat people the way you want to be treated, and build a foundation with each person.” Her kind spirit and warmth are immediately evident when she welcomes you to her office. Since she has experienced chronic pain herself, it’s easy for her to empathize with her patients and be willing to explore the many treatment possibilities. Spring Landscaping Planting, Irrigation, and Lighting

By Anne Yankus

Last month, we covered planning elements of hardscaping in your yard, but no yard is truly complete without a little softscaping to provide that finishing touch. Softscaping encompasses planting gardens, trees, and shrubs, as well as installing water and lighting systems. Landscaping is an excellent way to invest in the curb appeal of your home. Working with a professional may seem like an unnecessary expense, but the right expertise can actually save you time and money, both now and in the future. Well-educated and certified landscape designers already know what trees and plants are likely to thrive in your yard and how much care each one will require to properly maintain. They are familiar with the mature sizes of trees and shrubs, which can help you avoid having your yard look overgrown in a few short years. In short, they can save you the trouble of having to tear out the plants that didn’t work out and re-install ones that will. Landscape designers can also help you keep up on the latest trends. Many people still love the look of a lush, green lawn, but modern homeowners prefer to accomplish the aesthetic with lower-maintenance alternatives like drought-tolerant grasses or even artificial grass. Outdoor living spaces, organic and regenerative gardening, and rooftop and vertical gardens are all trending, and wildlife enhancements like birdbaths and animal feeders are making a comeback, as well.

Pretty Tile, Ugly Grout? BEFORE

AFTER

Another problem that designers can help you avoid is planting too much. This over-enthusiastic problem is visually and functionally detrimental to your yard and your wallet. Just like filling your house with too much furniture, over-planting in the yard will detract from your curb appeal and resale value, as well as creating needless extra maintenance. One solution to help with avoiding high-maintenance plants and over-planting, as well as creating a nice variety in your landscape’s elevation, is to have a variety of trees. Trees can provide functional shading or be for purely ornamental purposes. When choosing shade trees, you’ll want to look for fast-growing varieties. Some great choices for this are river or paper birch, tulip poplar, bald cypress, weeping willow, pecan, southern live oak, American sycamore, quaking aspen, and eastern white pine. ›››

For both ornamental and functional trees, consider where you’re planting. For street or curb trees, you’ll want to find a species that is pollution-tolerant and won’t be damaged by road salt—consider sunburst honey locusts or beech trees. Sugar maples, autumn blaze maples, eastern white pines, and Canadian hemlocks are renowned for their great colors in the fall. If you get a lot of deer traffic, Japanese umbrella pines and Kwanzan cherry trees are great choices. Leyland cypress and hawthorns are good options if you live in an area prone to drought. With all this work going into making your yard look lovely, you’ll want it to be visible during more than just daylight hours. Invest in some landscape lighting! Not only will you be able to enjoy your yard well past sunset, you’ll increase home security and personal safety for you and your guests. Hiring lighting professionals is a must when installing your landscape lighting. Find out whether they have any lighting design credentials, consider whether lighting design is their primary focus, learn how personal an approach they’ll take with your wants and needs, and find out what other contractors they are planning to work with (such as electricians or architects). Sprinkler systems have long been a strategy for lowering the amount of maintenance you need to do in the yard. Automatic sprinkler systems can be a great way to save on your water bill, too, as more modern technology allows the systems to sense when it’s raining and to turn off when no watering is needed. Some specialty systems can help with your water needs in the yard. A rotor sprinkler comes up out of the ground and rotates streams of water over the yard. It’s good for larger areas. A soaker hose essentially leaks water through many tiny holes in the hose. This ensures that water gets to the roots of your plants instead of being lost to evaporation when it sprinkles down from the top. A soaker hose can be an efficient choice near shrubs or gardens. Drip systems, commonly used for raised garden beds, are designed to have a single hose on one side of your garden bed that constantly drips into rows within the bed. Drip systems are ideal for vegetable or herb gardens. Don’t let a boring yard be the first thing that your guests and neighbors see! Get started on some planting, irrigating, and lighting projects that will put your home’s best foot forward. Sources for this article included: bobvila. com, thespruce.com, and gardenerspath.com. WE

Colorectal Awareness Month Over 50? Time to Get Tested!

By Leslie Byrne

It’s entirely fair that we don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about getting a colonoscopy… but we should. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer for both men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be over 104,000 cases of colon cancer in the United States in 2020, as well as 43,000 diagnoses of rectal cancer. As with so many cancers, early detection is key to successful treatment…and that often means getting a colonoscopy! Doctors generally recommend that people start getting screened for colorectal cancer at age 50 years. However, there are some instances (like family history of the disease) when screening needs to occur at a younger age. Most colon cancer cases are not linked to a genetic cause, but five percent are indeed caused by inheriting a mutation from a parent. If you are one of those people who dreads being screened for colorectal cancer, there is some good news—it may be less invasive than you fear. For many, a home stool test is a safe and private way to test for problems. These kits require a person to obtain a stool sample and send it to a laboratory, where the sample is analyzed for the presence of hidden blood in the stool. These tests include the guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) and the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). There is also a test called the FIT-DNA test, which many of us

have seen advertised on television. For this test, a person collects a full stool sample and sends it to a lab, where it is checked for cancer cells. These tests catch about 79 percent of colon cancers and accurately confirm 90 percent of the time when people do not have colon cancer. These tests can also detect 40 percent of precancerous polyps. Polyps are growths on the inner lining of the colon. They are an indication that some cells have changed or are abnormal. If any of these home tests find blood, cancer cells, or polyps in the stool sample, a colonoscopy will be recommended. Doctors recommend screening by the age of 50 years even when someone does not have any signs, symptoms, or family history of colorectal cancer. However, there are some symptoms that mean you need to talk to your doctor. Such symptoms can include diarrhea, constipation, or other changes in bowel habits or in the consistency of the stool. Other common symptoms

include rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, abdominal cramps, gas, or pain. Other signs to watch for are fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or feeling like the bowel is not empty. Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms during the early stages of colon cancer, which is why screening is so important. If someone is diagnosed with colorectal cancer, the stage of the cancer will determine the treatment. Common treatments include surgery, ablation, radiation, or chemotherapy. Depending on the treatment needed, the patient may be treated by several different specialists, such as a gastroenterologist, a surgical oncologist, a colorectal surgeon, a radiation oncologist, or a medical oncologist. In addition to detecting colorectal cancer, a colonoscopy can also confirm other health problems, such as Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the digestive tract), colitis, chronic inflammation of the lining of the colon, and celiac disease (inflammation caused by eating gluten that damages the lining of the small intestine). If you are looking for lifestyle changes to keep your colon healthy, try eating less red meat and avoiding processed meats. Consider taking probiotics. Work to decrease your sugar consumption, be sure to get plenty of fiber in your diet, and always drink plenty of water. As we discussed above, some lowrisk patients can begin with a home screening test. However, for people with symptoms of colon issues, a family history of colorectal cancer, or concerning home screening test results, a colonoscopy simply cannot be avoided. It may be used for more specific screening, to remove polyps, or to aid in other treatment. This brings us to the main reason that so many people do not get screened early— embarrassment. It is important to remember that the people performing colonoscopies are trained medical professionals who do this procedure every day. They understand that their patients are likely nervous, embarrassed, and uncomfortable with the process, so they work hard to make patients feel at ease and understand that they will be cared for with dignity. Get all the benefits of the early detection of colorectal cancer (or the peace of mind that you’re in the clear). Go ahead and schedule your colonoscopy. Let the professional medical team get you through the process. Sources for this article included: cancer.org, mayoclinic.org, health.clevelandclinic.org, and rush.edu. WE

An Inside Look

VENUS Vein Clinic Where Varicose Veins Vanish By Janette Calabro

Kelly Schroeder, MD, wants your legs to be healthy—and the rest of you, too! At VENUS Vein Clinic, Dr. Schroeder starts you on the path to overall wellness with vein health. After all, the veins in the legs carry blood to the heart. When the valves stop working, blood tends to flow backward and can end up pooling in the lower legs. This leads to pressure inside the veins that can make your legs ache, swell, itch, and feel restless. When a patient reports painful, swollen legs, Dr. Schroeder jumps right in, ready to help. Her patients include both men and women, though varicose veins are twice as common in women. “Any kind of discomfort in your legs can diminish quality of life,” she notes. We may have become accustomed to our legs feeling tired by the end of the day, but Dr. Schroeder shares that our legs shouldn’t generally feel more tired than our arms. “Restless legs are often tied to vein disease. There are other causes, but vein disease is a big culprit, and a lot of it goes untreated.” Instead of taking pain relievers, water pills, and muscle relaxers to address symptoms, Dr. Schroeder recommends treating the vein disease itself. “People are often placed on water pills because of swelling in their ankles, but that’s not going to help swelling caused by vein disease. Several times a week, we get people off water pills given for leg swelling. I’ve even had a couple of patients who recently went off their depression medicine. I won’t say, ‘fix your veins and you’ll no longer be depressed,’ but it was their leg pain and chronic discomfort that kept them from doing the things they wanted to do in life.” Treating their physical discomfort helped these patients return to activities they enjoyed. “Everything is interconnected,” says Dr. Schroeder. “Vein surgery changes the quality of life—if you can finally sleep because your legs aren’t jumping or aching, then you have a better day. Once your veins are treated, you may feel better after work, and then you can get out and take that walk.” Most treatments are covered by health insurance, but your policy may dictate which specific procedures are covered. Different procedures give patients more opportunities for health insurance coverage, which is why Dr. Schroeder offers a whole gamut of options. “There are a variety of ways to reach the same end,” she points out. “We want you to be able to use your insurance benefits, so we offer the whole spectrum.” One of the newest methods to treat vein disease is a minimally invasive procedure called VenaSeal. This FDA-approved vein closure system permanently treats varicose veins by sealing them with an adhesive agent. After a numbing medicine is applied, a small IV injects the adhesive into the problem vein to close it,

all under the guidance of an ultrasound. Patients generally return to their normal activities as soon as the procedure is finished. Another way to treat painful vein disease is through heat; in this case, radiofrequency ablation. Through a tiny catheter, a radiofrequency fiber is threaded into the damaged vein. The heat then destroys and collapses the diseased vein. The procedure takes about an hour in the office, and patients see immediate results, with no downtime. “We use more VenaSeal because it’s nearly painless. It’s so comfortable to go through,” says Dr. Schroeder. “Glue doesn’t hurt. That said, the heat from radiofrequency doesn’t hurt much either, and the results are amazing.” Dr. Schroeder is all about comfort. It’s normal to sometimes be nervous during treatment, so the staff at VENUS are dedicated to making patients comfortable with anything from music to aromatherapy. They’re even known to tell a few “dad” jokes. “Everyone at VENUS Vein Clinic is very professional, and the treatments are an enjoyable experience,” shares patient Doug. “It’s like walking into this very fun atmosphere. Everyone is so welcoming and nice, and the follow-through is just amazing.” Dr. Schroeder is delighted to hear feedback like Doug’s because her goal is to improve her patient’s lives. She found her calling when she opened VENUS Vein Clinic. “I just want to make a difference. I want people to have a great experience,” she says. “I want an improvement in the quality of my patients’ lives— whatever that means to them. If that means exercising more, I want to help them. If they want to lose weight, I want to help them feel better so they can do that. I want people to feel motivated to do all the things we talk about tackling in January.” There’s no need to suffer with the symptoms of vein disease when simple treatments are at hand! Get in touch with the staff at VENUS Vein Clinic by calling 402-979-VEIN (8346). For more information, visit VENUSveinclinic.com. The Instruction Book Being Happy and Purposeful Takes Practice By Sharon Knierim

A man named H. Jackson Brown, Jr., once wrote a few suggestions down for his son, Adam. Here’s the story: The book began as a gift to Adam as he packed his belongings for a new life as a college freshman. Meanwhile, Mr. Brown jotted down a few observations and “words of counsel” that he thought would be useful to his son. Careful to remember that it was not the responsibility of parents to pave the road for their children but rather to provide a road map, he was hopeful that his son would use these reflections of the mind and heart that he had himself found sustaining. The project that he hoped would only take a few hours eventually was finished after several days. He gathered up his collection of handwritten notes and typed them. He put the finished notes into an inexpensive binder, walked to the garage, and slid the binder under the front seat of the family’s station wagon. A few days later, Mr. and Mrs. Brown helped their son move into his new dorm room. After unpacking and settling in, Mr. Brown asked his son to accompany him to the parking lot. It was, Mr. Brown remembers, a very special moment. He reached under the car seat, and with words to the effect that this was what he knew about living a happy and rewarding life, presented the bound pages to his son. Naturally, there were hugs and the shaking of hands and a general feeling of love. Amazingly, these 511 suggestions and observations eventually became a book. Like all writers who expose their hearts and thoughts, Mr. Brown knew that not everyone would agree with all of the entries. We all have different experiences and approach our lives and the decisions we make with varied wisdom and insight. If you’ve ever read “Life’s Little Instruction Book,” you can probably add at least four or five hundred more of these little instructions. What purpose do these little instructions serve? They add a certain degree of joy, meaning, and efficiency to our lives. Back to Mr. Brown and his son. A few days after Mr. Brown presented Adam with his personal copy, Adam called home from his dorm. “Dad,” he said,“I’ve been reading the Instruction Book, and I think it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. I’m going to add to it and someday give it to my son.” Even the most cynical heart cannot deny that both father and son had just experienced a precious moment. Isn’t this what life is all about? Those unexpected and unrehearsed expressions to each other are like little shining stars in our lives. If you are fortunate enough to own a copy of “Life’s Little Instruction Book,” get it out and dust it off. You might be surprised that you are already practicing Mr. Brown’s ideas on living a terrific life. Remember, it takes more than simply reading and nodding, “Ah. yes.” Being happy, joyful, and purposeful takes practice. That’s where the fun begins. Don’t be surprised if you find a few personal favorites. Here are some truly wonderful excerpts from the book:

Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day. It can be tough waiting for miracles, but giving up on someone is akin to losing faith. If you give up, there’s nothing to look forward to. Keep hoping for that miracle. Remember, miracles come in all sizes. Be brave. Even if you’re not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference. Life seems to require courage, and we sometimes tire of being told to be brave. You never know. You might be braver than you think. Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures. Enough small pleasures rolled up together can be pretty impressive. After all, it’s the little things that matter. Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks very softly. Pay close attention and use your keen sense of observation. Rarely are things just what they seem. Very often, there are things afoot, and we need to look and listen closely to observe them. More often than not, it’s worth the extra effort. Never deprive someone of hope, it may be all they have. When things get rough, most of us thrive on hope. Like faith, hope softens many blows and gives us the courage to move through life’s ups and downs. Avoid negative people. These folks can be a real drain on your energy and outlook. Who hasn’t tried to rehabilitate a negative coworker or neighbor? Usually, the effort is unsuccessful. Instead, your personal energy might be better used elsewhere. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. Go ahead. Give it a try. Thinking and acting positive is contagious. Before you know it, you’ll feel so much better and so will everyone around you. It’s fun! Don’t major in minor things. This advice is for those of us who are picky, picky, picky. Try to look at the big picture. Nothing in life is perfect, but, for the most part, life is sweet. Leave everything a little better than you found it. This is the wish of most of us. As parents and citizens, we hope to improve the quality of life for the next generation. Keep it simple. Lots of people today are capitalizing on this concept. It’s a good truth and an excellent idea to live by. As everything becomes more complicated, we all strive for the beauty of simplicity. H. Jackson Brown, Jr. and his family were generous in passing on their good thoughts for a good life. Take some time to invent a few “life instructions” for yourself. WE March 2020

Focus on Finance

Bulls and Bears Who Really Cares?

By George Morgan

Just like any other industry, Wall Street has its own jargon. Brokers call betting against the market “short selling.” Believing that the market will go up means that you are “selling long.” When they say they are “elephant hunting,” they’re looking for a big company to purchase. Wall Street refers to market conditions as either “bullish” or “bearish,” and this is the part of their lingo that has most spilled over to the world outside the financial industry. It is not uncommon to hear references to bulls and bears on the nightly news. In fact, these terms have become so common that nobody stops to explain them anymore; they just assume that everybody already knows. Though many people have heard these terms, the truth is that not everyone knows what they mean. The simplest explanation is that a bull market is one in which stocks are rising, and a bear market is one in which stocks are falling. That said, let’s look a little closer at what these terms really mean. A bull market is not exactly describing the market itself. Rather, it is reporting on the psychology of investors in general. During a bull market, investors are optimistic and more interested in buying than they are in selling. When buying interest exceeds selling interest, the market goes up. Bull markets are most common when the economy is growing, unemployment is low, and inflation is low. A bull market can last weeks, months, or years; the average length of a bull market is approximately 97 months. When we say that we’re in a bear market, we expect that stocks are headed down. This means that sellers outnumber buyers. Historically, bear markets have been shorter in duration than bull markets, with an average length of 18 months. If stocks go down for just a few days or weeks, the movement is usually called a “pullback” or a “correction.” Once stocks drop 20 percent from their peak, commentators will begin to speculate that we are in a bear market and that prices may drop a lot farther before the market begins to climb back up again. The terms “bear” and “bull” are believed to have come from the way that each animal attacks its opponents. A bull thrusts its horns up, while a bear swipes down with its paws. The terminology is so ingrained in stock market culture that there is actually a statue of a charging bull situated near the New York Stock Exchange. The statue arrived in 1989, when it was (illegally) dropped off right outside the exchange building. The motivation behind it came from the 1987 Black Monday stock market crash. The intention was to inspire people who came into contact with it to carry on fighting through the hard times and look forward to a brighter future. In today’s market, the bull and bear terminology has less relevance than it did 40 years ago. Back

50

March 2020

then, investor optimism or pessimism had a greater impact on the markets than it does today. In those days, the markets’ buying and selling operations were made by humans with paper and pencil who stood together on the floor of an exchange. In today’s markets, an average of 80 percent of the trades are made between two computers, with no human involvement whatsoever. At last check, computers have no emotions and only minimal analytical powers. Markets continue to go up and down, but the computer-driven markets are more arbitrary and less predictable than those controlled by humans. The conventional wisdom is that investors enjoy bull markets and fear bear markets. This is probably not too far from the truth. If you have a 401(k), however, you have reason to enjoy both of them and dread neither. When the market is going up, you can enjoy the ride. When the market is going down, you are uniquely positioned to profit. Because 401(k) accounts are long-term investments, you can’t take money out just because the market is doing something unsettling. Thus, a temporary decline is irrelevant. Over the course of last 200 years, the long-term market trend has always been up. In addition, 401(k) owners and, in many cases, their employers add money to these accounts on a regular basis. When the market declines and they buy more mutual fund shares with the new money, the average cost of their portfolio declines. When the market returns to bull conditions (and it always has), the accounts will become profitable much sooner than they would have if investors had sold and hoped to return to the market when things got better. The bottom line is that people with 401(k) accounts (and there are a lot of us!) have no reason to fear either bulls or bears…at least, not when it comes to market forces. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Senior Care at Home Staying Safe, Healthy, and Active

By Linda Barnes

Many seniors, given the choice, would prefer to remain in their own homes as they age. The comfort of familiar surroundings is hard to beat. However, aging parents or loved ones may need assistance to maintain their independence. It could be as little as help with routine chores or as much as support managing medical conditions. Your loved one may only need temporary care following surgery or a medical event such as heart attack. Others may require long-term assistance in order to remain at home. No matter what type of care they need, in-home care can be a boon for seniors. In-home care might consist of non-medical support with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation. The assistance of certified personnel might be required for such things as wound care, administering medications, or monitoring vitals. In some cases, a combination of non-medical and skilled health care could be the ideal solution. It may be time to consider in-home care when you are concerned about safety or when personal hygiene seems to be in decline. Perhaps your senior is not willing or able to prepare nutritional meals. Concerns about remembering medication or driving safely are common, as well. After a hospital stay, seniors often need help at home during recovery. (In fact, some level of home recovery care may be needed after a hospital stay for people of any age.) There are a lot of considerations in home health care. If medical

care is needed, what degree of expertise will be required? How many hours per day or week? Will insurance or Medicare cover any of the expense? Consistency of caregivers is especially important with seniors. If you don’t have the time or the confidence to research the options and hire a private caregiver yourself, an advisory or referral service can help find or coordinate in-home care. Obtaining home health care through an agency is an efficient way to go. They will do a comprehensive initial assessment of your senior’s needs, as well as regular assessments over time. They will work with your loved one’s doctor regarding a care plan. For an agency’s services to be covered by Medicare, they must be Medicare-certified. An agency can likely provide various levels of care, such as skilled nursing care; physical, occupational, or speech therapy; medical social services; and home health aides. Skilled nursing is provided by an RN or LPN. When receiving skilled nursing care or

therapy, one may also be eligible for a home health aide to help with such things as bathing, dressing, and toileting. Agencies ensure that their professionals have the required training and certifications; requirements vary by state. CNAs might perform non-medical tasks plus some medical functions such as care of wounds or catheters. Federal law dictates a prescribed number of hours of training. Home health aides are paraprofessionals who have completed federal requirements. They might help with routine tasks such as laundry, cooking, or shopping. In addition, they may assist with toileting, bathing, and dressing. They can do limited medical tasks such as checking blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. They will monitor mental and physical status and respond to health emergencies. In larger cities, there may be several home health care agencies. A physician or health care provider can supply you with a list of agencies in your area. Some may be non-profit or religious agencies, while others are proprietary. When direct-hiring non-medical in-home care personnel, you’ll want recommendations from friends or colleagues. There may be a caregiver network that maintains listings of independent caregivers and assists in their placement. You’ll want to check credentials and ask for referrals. An advantage of hiring an agency is that they handle all the hiring and human resource functions, taking care of background checks, insurance, payroll, and taxes. They verify training requirements and credentials. If a caregiver is unable to work on a given day, the agency has contingency plans to cover the absence. Since most seniors receive Medicare, it is wise to familiarize yourself with its requirements for coverage of home health care. (Medicare.gov has all the information.) For example, a doctor must determine that home health care is medically necessary. Homemaker services are not covered; neither is 24/7 care. Help with personal care may only be covered if the patient is also receiving skilled nursing or therapy. How fortunate to have so many options for home care, allowing seniors to enjoy medical attention that is as effective as that provided in a hospital or skilled nursing facility. Those who just need a hand with everyday chores or personal care can also avoid the stress of separation from home and family while maintaining their independence. Your Little Corner of Paradise Fencing Options for Home or Business

By Maria Harding

The right fence can do so much for your home. It can keep your family and property safe, brighten and beautify your garden spaces, and add enduring value to your investment. Well-planned fences around businesses are crucial for maintaining security, protecting inventory, and controlling access. With the great variety of fencing options, an experienced fence company is essential to guide you through the process of selecting the best fence to fit your aesthetic vision, security needs, and budget. Some barriers are meant to keep animals from leaving the yard. Tethering your dog to a stationary object as a means of keeping the pet confined is not only cruel, it can actually create aggressive behavior. Some pet owners consider hidden fences, which use buried wire that carries a radio signal and alerts pets to the boundary through a receiver collar. Other owners prefer a physical barrier that can also keep children from leaving the yard. Pool fences should not provide footholds for climbing. Most city ordinances have minimum height requirements for a fence around a property that has a pool, and there may be requirements for additional fencing between the home and the pool. This is because the US Consumer Products Safety Commission has determined that fewer than two percent of drowning victims are trespassers. Local, reputable fencing professionals should be familiar with municipal safety requirements—be sure to ask.

Security fences can protect businesses, particularly those with large inventories of valuable materials and equipment. Open fencing is preferred for security because it leaves an intruder no place to hide. For this reason, tall vertical bars or a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire are good choices for fencing material. Gates offer the point of greatest vulnerability. Controlling access with a security gate is crucial. Modern gates can be operated remotely with an opener, or with a key, keypad code, or a magnetic key card. There are a variety of fencing materials from which to choose, and each has its advantages. Depending on the size of the project, thr material you choose can also greatly impact the overall cost. Vinyl fencing is extremely easy to care for. It provides durability at a relatively low cost. Most vinyl fencing is made with ultraviolet inhibitors that prevent colors from fading, and they tend to be made with “through color,” so scratches and nicks are not visible. Garden

enthusiasts do not recommend installing vinyl fencing adjacent to vegetable gardens because of the possibility of chemicals leaching into the soil. Ornamental aluminum and steel fences add interest and value to a home. The open design showcases a beautifully landscaped yard, while still conveying a sense of security. They offer the same prestigious appearance of wrought iron, without requiring a coat of rust-resistant paint every few years. Ornamental fencing is prefabricated from tubular bars, rather than hand-forged on site, which increases affordability. At the end of its life, ornamental fencing is totally recyclable. Most new aluminum fencing is made from recycled material, as well. We associate the natural look of wooden fences with the timeless ideal of a wellmaintained home and yard. Today, there are endless styles from which to choose. Make sure that the wood used is pressuretreated or is naturally resistant to pests and moisture. Around 80 percent of wood fences are made from cedar or pine, which can last 15–20 years with good maintenance. Fence posts are particularly vulnerable and should be set in gravel or cement to further reduce exposure to ground moisture and rot. Chain-link fencing is very popular, due to its low installation and maintenance costs. To reduce its industrial appearance and make it more decorative, wire mesh fencing material can be powder-coated, vinyl-coated, or woven with slats to change its color and appearance. When choosing a company to provide and install fencing, look for an established professional with a wide variety of styles and materials. Check to see if testimonials are available from past customers. Read what your neighbors have to say about a company’s ability to complete work on time, stay within estimated budgets, and clean up after installation. Be sure to ask sales representatives if their company offers removal and disposal of any old fencing. Do they take care of necessary building permits and land surveys that confirm property lines? Top companies will schedule ample time for a representative to come to your location to discuss options and offer you a free initial estimate. Many companies can also discuss financing options through reputable banks or credit unions. When you partner with the right fencing company, you can be confident in the choices you will make to secure and beautify your home or business. Pre-Owned Certified Vehicles Nearly New Cars at Nearly Used Prices

By Brennan Hallock

Brand new cars are beautiful. The new car smell, the “never been touched” look of the interior, the barely registered odometer. There are many things to love about a new car, though the high sticker price and the swift depreciation are not among them. If you want the beauty of a new car without the price, consider a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle. A CPO vehicle is technically a used vehicle, but it is usually a recent model with low mileage that has been inspected, refurbished, and certified by a manufacturer or other certifying authority. CPOs also usually include some of the other bonuses that often come with new cars, such as a manufacturer’s warranty or special financing. When you purchase a used vehicle, one of the biggest issues is that there is very little to protect you if something goes wrong. CPO vehicles, however, come with warranty coverage. This protects you if something breaks on the vehicle. Another benefit is the wider range of financing options, similar to what might be available if you were purchasing a new car. Many banks and credit unions treat CPO vehicles the same as new cars, so their loans don’t have the higher interest rates that usually come with used cars. There are many low-interest financing deals that would never be available for a used car loan, and these can save you money.

There are many other benefits that come with CPO vehicles. These may include no-cost maintenance for a year, roadside assistance, trip interruption reimbursement, and replacement transportation while your car is being repaired. Some manufacturers even offer the ability to return the car within a certain time period if you change your mind. Finally, buying a CPO vehicle gives you peace of mind, knowing that your vehicle is backed by the manufacturer. The likelihood of something going wrong is much lower than with a typical used car because a vehicle has to pass rigorous testing to determine whether it can be sold as CPO. You will also get the benefits of having your vehicle serviced at the manufacturer’s shops. You should still consider potential disadvantages to buying a CPO vehicle, and there are a few. The first disadvantage is also

the most obvious—the higher price. Because they have been rigorously inspected and are being sold by a certified agency, CPO vehicles will be more expensive than a comparable used car that is not certified. The amount you have to pay for the peace of mind and added benefits varies, but you will have to decide for yourself how much they are worth to you. You should also always read the fine print. Not all CPO vehicles come with the same benefits and guarantees. For example, while most CPO vehicles are backed by their manufacturer, not all of them are. Some dealerships offer their own certified used car programs, and these should not be confused with the manufacturer’s programs. In some cases, these programs are really no more than an extended warranty. Some of them are good programs, but they may have other conditions, like requiring that you return to that particular dealership for service or support. Extended warranties are generally not a great investment for CPO vehicles. You usually end up spending more on the warranty than repairs would cost. By the time the manufacturer’s warranty runs out, your likelihood of even owning the car is fairly low. Read the contract thoroughly, though, to determine if yours is worth the extra expense.

Though a CPO vehicle is unlikely to be a lemon, you should still do your research and ask questions before you buy it. A CPO vehicle, just like any other vehicle, should be purchased carefully. Here are a few questions it is good to ask the dealer before you buy. First of all, find out if the vehicle is certified by the manufacturer or the factory. Ask to see proper documentation of this certification. Make you are getting what you think you are getting. You should also ask to see the certification checklist and history report of maintenance and repairs. This detailed record is one of the things you’re paying extra for when you purchase a CPO vehicle, and you have the right to see the information before you decide. As with any car, ask what the warranty covers. Different manufacturers offer different warranties. A good warranty should cover at least your basic needs, such as roadside assistance and a loaner car to use while yours is in the shop. If you want a nearly new car that comes with peace of mind but without a brand-new sticker price, a certified pre-owned vehicle might fit the bill. The Good Life

Buy or Refinance in 2020 Get the Facts Before You Borrow

By Janette Calabro

The American dream of home ownership is alive and well. Will 2020 be the year you buy your first home, upgrade your current home, or refinance? Whether you’re looking to purchase or refinance, it’s best to shop around a little, for the best rate, for a great lender, and for the best type of mortgage loan for your particular circumstances. Before stepping into this challenge, educate yourself on some important facts. Before we delve into interest rates and mortgages, let’s keep in mind that it’s important to assemble a good team to help you navigate the process. Even the simplest mortgage transactions are complicated, and the experience and advice of a great lender, a straightforward loan officer, and a detail-oriented closing team (including the title company) are worth their weight in gold. So, while everyone wants a great interest rate, don’t just sign up for the lowest one without considering the human part of the picture. Most banks and credit unions, even standalone mortgage lenders, offer similar interest rates. Some factors, like your credit score, directly drive your rate. The magic number to lock in the lowest rate is a 740 score, but lenders will often negotiate or even match what their competitors offer—that’s where the shopping around can come in handy. Interest rates also differ based on what type of loan you’re applying for (conventional, FHA, or VA). Other simple things can drive the rate, like if you’re getting cash back on a refinance. Closing costs are similar among lenders, but consider discount points carefully. These are extra fees that you can pay to buy down the interest rate, but those fees go directly into the lender’s pocket. Title insurance varies from state to state, but you can usually choose the title company you want to use. Title insurance is required, but it protects both buyers and lenders from a title dispute during the transfer of property ownership. Traditional home mortgages or conventional loans usually follow strict underwriting requirements set by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The minimum credit score for this type of financing hovers around 620, though a good credit score alone doesn’t mean automatic approval. The minimum down payment may be as low as 3 percent for those who qualify. Providing 20 percent, however, will mean you can avoid having to get mortgage insurance (a third-party insurance interest, in case you default on the loan). Skipping mortgage insurance means a lower monthly payment. Loans that are guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) require a minimum down payment of 3.5 percent. The aim of these loans is to make buying a home more affordable for families with lower incomes and credit scores. FHA interest rates are low, but that mortgage insurance we talked about? It stays for the life of the loan (not just until a certain amount of equity is built). VA financing, backed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, is for active duty military and veterans only. There is no down payment requirement and no

60

March 2020

mortgage insurance! However, there is a VA Funding Fee at a certain percentage of the loan amount; this is usually financed back into the loan. If you’re a first-time homebuyer, there are numerous programs available for down payment assistance. Some banks offer in-house programs that accommodate potential buyers with small down payments in hand. Talk with your loan officer, since each bank, credit union, or mortgage lender may have specialized programs. Reverse mortgages allow homeowners to use equity in the home to pay themselves supplemental retirement income every month (or in a lump sum). If you’re 62 or older, you can borrow from your home’s equity without having to make monthly mortgage payments, and the amount borrowed is generally not due until the borrower is no longer living in the house. You have to occupy your home as a primary residence, and you can’t be away for non-medical reasons for longer than six months. This type of mortgage should be considered with care. In many parts of the nation, property values are up and interest rates are down, which makes refinancing very attractive. If you need cash for consolidation, home improvements, or investments, now’s the time. The rule of thumb states that reducing your interest rate by 1 percent or more is usually a benefit, though the size of the loan balance does make a difference here. Factor in the closing costs to see how soon you’ll recoup them—your loan officer can help you with this. When refinancing, always consider lowering your rate and term, if the payment is comfortable. Going from a 30-year term to a 20- or 15-year term will save thousands in interest, and who doesn’t want to pay their mortgage off in a shorter amount of time? Happy shopping! Great Escapes

Vienna, Austria History and Beauty in One Place

By Jackie Williams

Mozart, Haydn, the Strausses, and many more composers had the right idea when they made Austria their home—Vienna, to be exact. After enjoying a U by Uniworld river cruise along the Danube, I decided that Vienna was my favorite stop. Let me tell you about what this city has to offer. The Schonbrunn Palace Park is extraordinary. I could have stayed there for days, walking every trail. You could bring a basket lunch and relax on a bench, enjoying the gardens and people-watching, or you could catch a concert or find your way out of a maze. Originally used as a hunting area, Schonbrunn Palace is one of the most popular and important cultural sites in Vienna. The grounds contain fountains, statues, monuments, gardens, and even a zoo. Schonbrunn Zoo is the oldest and best zoo in Europe, with more than 700 animal species, and the Palm House is one of Europe’s largest botanical glasshouses. Look at the Palace on Google maps or download a map online and you will get an idea of how huge this property is. They even have a running map! The Vienna Marathon, held every April, runs through the grounds. While I always enjoy the outdoors, the indoor tour of the Palace is very interesting and informative. Tour guides make history and culture come alive with off-beat stories. One guide told us that the origin of the term “flea market” was

62

when someone brought a monkey to an outdoor market and customers paid to have the monkey pick fleas off their heads! There is a wall-sized tapestry depicting that very scene. The Schonbrunn Palace is a must when visiting Vienna. In fact, save two full days to see it, if you can. Practice riding a comfort bike at home before you go to Vienna because you do not want to miss out on a traditional Danube River ride. Biking is huge in Vienna, and there are bikes and routes for every level of rider. What a great way to get around the trails in the large parks! Public transportation is cheap and easy in Vienna. Take the Metro to Innere Stadt, Vienna’s old town, where you can spend the day shopping. In the 7th district of Vienna, you will find the trendy shopping district of Spittelberg. Start at a coffee shop in the morning and wander the streets all day until you end up at a ›››

local brewery that night. Don’t forget to sample as many flavors of strudel as you can handle! Even risky-sounding flavors like cabbage are very tasty. Vienna is full of stunning things to see, and just walking around brings views of baroque streetscapes and artistic masterpieces. Historic churches and opera houses, museums, and gardens are waiting for you to admire them. Wander along Ringstrasse, which is known as “the most beautiful boulevard in the world.” It is home to many of the most popular spots in Vienna, like the Imperial Palace and Parliament. Imagine what it would be like to live in one of those elaborate palaces! End the day by going up Danube Tower for 360-degree views of the city—it’s the perfect place for sunset photos. What is a trip to Vienna without going to a classical music concert? This year is the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. It’s being celebrated as Beethoven Year all over the world but especially in Vienna, where Beethoven lived and worked. There will be a series of special concerts, opera performances, and exhibitions to take advantage of during your visit in 2020. Make sure to get a ticket specifically in the Golden Hall at Vienna’s Musikverein, one of the world’s best concert halls. You can also hear the Vienna Boys’ Choir, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in the world, with over 500 years under their belt. Last, but not least, is the world-famous white stallion ballet, coupled with classical Viennese music. Watch the beautiful horses dance and prance to music inside the Hofburg Palace. There’s so much more to see and do in and around Vienna. Consider booking a river cruise that starts or ends here so you have extra days to spend exploring and taking tours. Some cruise lines offer pre- and post-cruise tours that can get you special access and behind-thescenes tours you would not be able to get otherwise—ask your travel agent. Then you will also have time to take the train to Salzburg, which is just a few hours away and is home to “The Sound of Music.” You can see sites where the movie was filmed and where the real von Trapp family lived. There is plenty to enjoy in Vienna, and this is just the start. I didn’t even tell you about the wine yet! Sources for this article included: austria. info, wien.info, and schoenbrunn.at. CLC Landscapes Rooted in a Tradition of Excellence By Maria Harding

“Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.” This is the adage that came to mind when I recently sat down with Andrew Gangestad, President of CLC Landscapes, and learned more about what they stand for as a company. CLC Landscapes has been making the Omaha area vibrant for over two decades. Andrew gradually took the reins from his father, who started CLC Landscapes in 1992. Andrew studied horticulture at UNL, but he says his best training was received on the job, working side by side with his father. “I grew up working with him many a summer,” laughs Andrew. When the company first started, its focus was on commercial landscaping, maintenance, and irrigation. That is the origin of the “CLC” part of the company name—his father’s business was originally called Corporate Lawn Care. As the business grew, it developed a balance between residential and commercial work. “The commercial-to-residential work is about a 50/50 blend that ebbs and flows with the commercial real estate market,” says Andrew. In 2013, the company officially changed its name to CLC Landscapes to better reflect its comprehensive array of services. Today, residential and commercial clients alike can count on the experienced professionals at CLC Landscapes to guide them through every step of a project. A designer first sits down with the client to create a blueprint for the project. Andrew explains that it is a true partnership when choosing the types of plants in a design—it’s important to help clients get the yard they want, but not all plants are feasible to grow in all areas. “You have to be a little careful with that around here,” he says. “We’re not in Kansas; we’re not in Missouri.” Every year, new varieties are developed that may be more suitable to our climate. The designers at CLC Landscapes stay updated about new plants that will thrive in our area. Andrew and his team put a lot of thought into considering the mature size of the plants that will go into a finished landscape. In some cases, the initial finished look is a surprise to homeowners. “After the initial install, many people say it looks small,” says Andrew. This is a point in the landscaping process when having an expert in your corner really pays off! While CLC Landscapes is happy to add a little more to provide some quicker results, their designs are based on knowing how the selected plants will grow into the space. That way, your yard doesn’t end up looking overgrown when plants and trees mature. It would be easy to overfill a space, or temporarily mask it with the wrong variety of plant,

in order to earn more money on a landscape project. CLC Landscapes chooses an enduring approach. Their customers are happy years down the road. For the hardscape portion of the projects, Andrew maintains a good working relationship with area distributors, and they keep him abreast of the latest developments in the industry. “Products are changing,” explains Andrew. “I feel like 15, even just 10 years ago, it was the same color, the same style. Vendors are getting a lot more creative with different styles.” What does CLC Landscapes do to stay busy during the winter season? The company has expanded to include commercial ice control. Snow and ice removal and salt application are offered for commercial properties. The Omaha area is known for its unpredictable winters, so the company’s responsibilities vary from week to week. “In Nebraska, it’s difficult to plan whether you’re going to get a lot of snow or no snow,” Andrew points out. If snow is light, the team at CLC Landscapes can often get some hardscaping projects completed. “We’ll get to a point that we need to come back in the spring and finish planting and detail work,” Andrew notes. “We have all of those in-depth conversations prior to the cold season, so our clients aren’t surprised.” About 20 employees make up the dedicated team at CLC Landscapes. “We get a lot of employment referrals from our current employees, and those are often our best hires,” says Andrew. “There are some crews that have more or less built their own crew.” This gives Andrew strengthened assurance that his landscapers are honest and reliable, and that the members of the individual teams will work well together, creating an environment of easy cooperation. Whether you need residential or commercial landscaping service, CLC Landscapes ensures that you benefit from their longstanding tradition of teamwork, positivity, and dedication. The Green Thumb

A Garden in Progress Success Starts Slowly

By Sharon Knierim, Master Gardener

Doesn’t it seem odd to be cut off from nature during winter’s harsh and unrelenting months? The good news is that spring is just around the corner. You can feel it all around you. The air smells sweeter and the buds are swelling on the trees. Those tulips and crocus that were planted last fall and were nearly forgotten are beginning to stir. When they do, something stirs inside gardeners’ hearts. We’re ready for action. But wait—not so fast. In the Midwest, gardening typically begins in February or March and continues until October or November. There is much to be accomplished, but gardening should be (at least in part) a leisurely pursuit rather than something you hurry up and get done. Here are a few points to consider. It may seem like a lot to think about, but keeping these hints in mind will make gardening more enjoyable. Don’t uncover perennials too early in the season. Although perennials are stirring and beginning to show their new growth in March, be cautious. Oddly enough, snow offers protection like mulch. If you suspect that a snow or ice storm is in the near future, take time to heap a little extra protection around these plants. Do be gentle when finally uncovering perennials. Do so only after the threat of damaging snow and ice is no longer an issue. Don’t be overly concerned if new leaves appear to be yellow. They will turn green as the weather warms.

Don’t attempt to accomplish too much in one day. If you’re a weekend gardener or if your mother-in-law is coming for an extended visit in a few days, it’s easy to try to accomplish too much at once. If you find yourself in either of these scenarios, it’s best to do only what needs to be done at the moment. If your mother-inlaw is coming and you’ve fallen behind on your gardening chores, ask her to help you. She’ll love you for it! Do set limits and have a plan. Overwhelming yourself at the beginning of the gardening season may haunt you all summer if you become injured. Don’t try to be a hero. Remember that a garden is a work in progress. Do be careful when using chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in the garden or on the lawn. Don’t use more chemicals than recommended by the manufacturer. This is not a case of more is better. Do wash your face and hands or take a

www.womensedition.com

shower after using chemicals. In fact, taking a shower after gardening is always recommended to remove perspiration, chemicals, dust, and pollen. Try to make it a part of your gardening regimen. Do be cautious when pruning shrubs and trees. Prune and trim only when it is recommended by reputable nurseries. Remember the rule concerning trimming old wood versus new wood: Proper pruning allows air and light to stimulate new and proper growth. Before making a cut, consider what the plant will look like after it is pruned. Do use only the highest-quality pruners and trimmers to accomplish clean cuts that will not damage plant tissue. Don’t be overly enthusiastic when pruning. Keep in mind that a bad pruning job is worse than a bad haircut! Don’t assume that early spring sunshine cannot cause severe sunburn. Do remember to take good care of your skin. Be cautious and use sunscreen whenever you are in the sun. Wearing lightweight clothing to cover your arms and legs is always a good choice to avoid sunburn or windburn. Do your body a favor and drink plenty of water when gardening. Doing so will bring much-needed fluids to your system. Gardening is a form of exercise, so the body needs to be replenished on a regular basis. Do leave soda pop in the refrigerator when gardening. These soft drinks will not refresh you as well as water. Do wear proper shoes. Leave the flipflops inside. Good shoes and socks prevent fatigue while offering a good, solid base. To prevent injuries to the feet by sharp tools, don’t garden barefoot. Don’t give up. If something doesn’t work in the garden, take a little time to determine why it isn’t. Are growing conditions lacking? Is there too much or too little sun? Are plants receiving enough moisture? Maybe the soil does not percolate correctly. Do spend some time troubleshooting. Don’t plant anything in the garden that appears to be infested with insects or disease. Instead, destroy these problemmakers immediately. Do plant only highquality garden stock, seedlings, and seeds. Do share your talents and bounty with others. They’ll appreciate it. You just never know: You might help others begin their journey into gardening. Editor’s Note: Sharon has been a master gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in southwest Iowa, and she looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE March 2020

Cuddly Critters

Equestrian Sports for All Riders Love Your Horse, Build Your Skills By Brie Christensen

For more than 100 years, the equestrian sport has provided opportunities for athletes around the globe to compete and enjoy the act of riding. With various disciplines to choose from, such as combined driving, dressage, eventing, vaulting, show jumping, reining, English riding, and Western riding, there’s an option out there for every horse and rider. Since there are so many equestrian disciplines, it’s important to choose the one that best complements both the horse and the rider. There’s no need to rush this decision! It’s fun to try more than one before you find the best fit. Some things to consider when choosing a discipline include the rider’s personal preference, the type of horse, and the skill levels of both the horse and the rider. Dressage, a technique for showcasing all levels of training in a competitive format, is open to all breeds of horses and any level of rider. Currently, there are nine progressive levels of competition for this event. Dressage is one of the disciplines that is included in the Olympic Games. You may also recognize show jumping from the Olympics. Known as one of the most popular sports worldwide, show jumping involves a series of obstacles to jump over. Horses and ponies of all sizes and breeds compete in various levels of challenge. Combined driving is specifically designed to test the driver’s ability as well as the obedience, speed, and athleticism of the horse or horses. This event includes three phases with a carriage in tow: driven dressage, marathon, and a cones course. The carriage may be towed by one, two, or three horses. With this sport, there are no breed specifications, and all skill levels are welcome to compete. Another combination discipline is called eventing; it consists of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. This triathlon of sorts often takes place over three days. Vaulting, the oldest equestrian sport in history, is sometimes referred to as “gymnastics on horseback” because…well, because it’s essentially gymnastics on horseback. Competitors are judged on their ability to smoothly execute compulsory movements during their routines. Reining tests the skills and athletic abilities that would be expected of a working ranch horse. This is done through specific movements like slow circles; large, fast circles; and fast, 360-degree spins. American stock breeds are often used for these competitions. In Western reining and other displays of Western horsemanship, riders demonstrate control of the horse and adaptability. English riding focuses more on excellent obedience and smooth movements. Categories include hunter seat, saddle seat, and driving. Just as there are numerous sports to choose from, there are also many competitions available for riders, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In these

70

March 2020

international events, elite athletes compete on behalf of their respective nations. The three foundation sports of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI)— dressage, eventing, and jumping—are quite unique among Olympic competitions because they combine the athleticism and training of a human athlete and an animal. Since 1990, the FEI World Equestrian Games have been held every four years (halfway between each Olympic cycle), providing another chance for riders to compete. These competitions have gradually expanded to include the disciplines of jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting, reining, and para-dressage. Historically, these events have been held at European venues, and always at a new location. In 2010, however, the Games were held in Kentucky—outside of Europe for the first time. Another highly notable equestrian competition is the FEI World Cup, an indoor series that takes place throughout the world with qualifying leagues, leading to a final in each discipline. This event began with show jumping in 1978. It has since evolved to include the disciplines of dressage, driving, and vaulting. Every four years, in the year before the summer Olympic Games, thousands of athletes come from nations in the Americas to participate in a variety of competitive sports during the Pan American Games. Equestrian participants compete in the disciplines of dressage, eventing, and show jumping during this competition. Younger riders (ages 12–21 years) can compete in the Adequan/FEI North American Youth Championships. Young equestrians compete for team and individual medals in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines: show jumping, dressage, and eventing. Throughout the year, the US Equestrian Federation works with organizing committees to coordinate and stage major equestrian events across the United States. As the sport continues to evolve, it makes room for more competitions and disciplines for riders of all ages and all skill levels. While the first trot might seem daunting to a novice rider, that’s how mastery of the equestrian sport begins! With dedication, training, and a passion for riding, anyone can enjoy this sport. Positive Perspective

Let’s All Be Rainbows Awakened Doing, Every Day Do you feel that you are a positive person? An optimistic person? Do you bring a ray of sunshine into the lives of the people that you meet? When you wake up in the morning, is it with a smile, feeling excited to go forth into the day and see how many people you can have a positive connection with? “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” —Maya Angelou Years ago, when I started Women’s Edition, I decided to make the magazine a positive read. No politics, no religion, no news—no potentially feel-bad stuff at all, just an overall positive experience. We’ve been striving to meet that goal since 1986. This goal extends not only to our readers but also to the businesses that support us through their advertising. When I go out to meet with potential customers, my goal…almost always…is to leave them in a better place than when I walked through the door. I say “almost always” because there are times that I’m just a little worn out. Not at the top of my game. Then, I forget. I forget to set my intention before walking through the door. “Awakened doing is when you don’t create suffering anymore for others—or for yourself—by your own actions. It also implies that your primary intention, the focus of your

By Janet Van deWalle

attention, is on the ‘doing’ in the present moment, rather than the result that you want to achieve through it.”—Eckhart Tolle Setting our intentions every morning, before we even get out of bed, is a wonderful way to pre-pave the day. It is a great way to point our energies in the right direction. This approach ensures that we get a head start on a positive, fun, successful day. “Inspiration comes from within yourself. One has to be positive. When you’re positive, good things happen.” — Deep Roy The great thing about starting our days in this way is that like so often attracts like. When we make a decision to have a positive impact on others, they will usually have a positive impact on us, as well. When two positive people get together, something magical happens. Over the years, I have met literally thousands of business owners. I have never had the same appointment twice. I learn something every single time. I have grown. I am a better person. That’s what makes this all worthwhile. “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.”— Dr. Seuss
