Happy September, Everyone!
Before we know it, the days and nights will be cooling down, and it will be sweater weather!
I am hoping that by the time this issue comes out, the CRAZY weather we have been experiencing since the beginning of spring will have calmed down. I have lived in Omaha my entire life, and I’ve never seen a year like this. I was here for the 1975 terrible tornado…but even that year, it was a “one and done.” This year seems to keep going and going. Let’s hope we have a mild fall.
I am writing this column from home, the day after the wind storm that hit Omaha on July 31st. Our neighborhood looks like a war zone. Trees down all over the place. Lots of the neighbors have no power. For some odd reason, we do have power. We ended up having a very large tree crash into our yard from our neighbors’ yard, and we lost our favorite tree. Manny and I love this neighborhood because of the beautiful trees. I guess when you have wind gusts over 90 miles an hour, you are bound to have a lot of them come down.
Our neighborhood has really come together, and I am guessing that this is happening all over Omaha. Last night, after the storm had passed, everyone came out to assess damage that had been done to their homes and their neighbors’ homes. We all supported one another, as we always do. It’s one of the reasons that I love living in Omaha.
Today, you can hear the chainsaws buzzing from all directions. Manny is taking cold Gatorade to share with the workmen around the neighborhood. It is 91 degrees, and that’s just who Manny is.
My husband is originally from Los Angeles. He discovered Omaha when the Navy brought him here to be a recruiter in 1999. When he retired in 2004, he tried going back to L.A. He soon realized it just didn’t work for him anymore. So, even though he has been around the world 14 times in his 20-year Navy career, he chose Omaha as his home. Manny came from a huge city, but he has the heart of a Nebraskan.
We’ll talk next month! Until then, stay safe and be happy!

Positive Thought of the Month
“Do you believe that a place can have its own distinct rhythm? I do. Just as surely as the pulling of the tides. Just as meaningful as a beating heart. And just as mysterious as the throaty purr of a well-stroked cat. I believe every place has its own unique rhythm. And I believe we are either in or out of sync with it.” —Marti Healy

Gradually drizzle in 1/4 to 1/2 cup of ice water until dough forms. Roll out onto floured parchment paper until you have a large circle or rectangle of dough. In a large bowl, mix 2 cups of blueberries and 1 or 2 peeled and sliced fresh peaches—or any mixture of fruits you have on hand. Mix in 1 Tablespoon of sugar. Pour the prepared fruit into the middle of the crust and dot with a few pieces of butter. Draw the edges toward the center, covering some of the fruit but leaving the center of the fruit exposed. Brush the crust with an egg wash and sprinkle the edges with sugar. Place the galette (still on the parchment paper) onto a cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Serve with ice cream.

Fall Trends to Wear Now!
Versatile, Comfortable, Personal
By Holly Bell
Over the years of perusing the latest fashion videos, runway shows, and magazines, I have come to one conclusion about successful style: Before you buy any of a new season’s fashions, you must know your personal style. You can then work with the latest fall trends and pick out pieces that you will love, that will make you feel confident, and that say something about you and your personal style.
We’ve all been there, standing in front of our closet, thinking, “I have nothing to wear!” Finding your personal style will solve this. If you stay true to your style, you will love everything you own. Your clothing will easily mix and match and will feel comfortable and versatile for many occasions. There are a couple of easy steps to finding your personal signature style.
The first task is to pull out all of your favorite items and look them over. What words describe those pieces? Are they classic? Sporty? Feminine? Tailored? Casual? Find a word that describes the style of those pieces.
Now ask yourself another question. How do you want to feel when you wear your clothing? Do you want to feel elegant? Comfortable? Traditional? Edgy? What do you want your clothing to do for you?
When I ask myself these questions, I find that the words to describe my personal style are Classic and Elegant. What words describe your personal style? Keep them in mind as you apply them to your fall shopping.
When you know your signature style, it will be easier to choose your looks for each new season. For example, if you know that your signature style is Sporty, you might regret purchasing a lovely, ruffled blouse. It may be fun to buy, but clothing items that do not reflect your personal style are often the ones that still have tags on them a year later.
Now, you’re ready to shop this fall’s trends with confidence. Quiet luxury is trending this fall, and it starts with blazers of different cuts. Cropped blazers are a little harder to style than relaxed blazers, but they can look great when layered with longer pieces showing under them. If trailing tails is not for you, a tucked-in top is always a good choice.
Wide leg, high-waisted trousers are currently the rage but need to be selected wisely. If you are tall, you’re in luck. You can wear as wide a leg as you please without looking boxy. The more petite among us will look more stylish in a pared-down version of the wide leg trouser.
Another hot trend for fall is known as British Country style. Think of Ralph Lauren—plaids, vests, tailored jackets, polo shirts, and straight-leg dark wash jeans. These items will always be stylish and are easy to incorporate into different wardrobes.
Skirts are back in a big way for fall, from slim, ankle-skimming skirts to calf-grazing full skirts. These are versatile and can be worn with sandals, kitten heels, tall boots, or even sneakers. The rule of thumb is to pair a fitted piece with a voluminous piece. For example, if you are wearing a slim skirt, it would be perfect to wear a relaxed fit blazer or cropped puffer coat with it. If you are choosing a fuller skirt, a simple solid fitted top or tailored jacket would be a better choice for a contrasting fit.
The predominant color palette this year has a high concentration in brown. Brown belts, handbags, and shoes or boots look particularly rich and bring an high-end sophistication to any fall outfit. Brown continues in coats, faux fur, and leather. Wearing brown accessories with black looks particularly modern for fall.
Another fun trend for fall is leopard print, in both clothing and accessories. It is considered a neutral and looks stunning worn with other neutrals. Many fall runways suggested wearing leopard and red together. This will turn heads! Make sure this fits your personal style.
A neutral color story in your closet is a great way to start and gives you the opportunity to create multiple looks from your wardrobe. Find your style and then add pieces that will work with everything. Of course, all rules are made to be broken. If something really speaks to you, find a way to work it in, even if it’s not what you would typically wear. Personal growth is good, too.
We always look forward to the next season, and fall is particularly special. While we enjoyed hot days and embraced the colors, fabrics, and silhouettes of summer, we always enjoy the first crisp day that snaps our mindset into fall fashions. Let’s be ready to express our personal style when it gets here!
Bolte Construction Complete Customer Satisfaction
Bill Bolte and his son-in-law, Geoff Amstutz, represent two generations of Omaha North High graduates who have loved woodworking and construction their whole lives. Bill founded Bolte Construction in 2003. Geoff discovered his passion for renovating homes while working with Bill on a Habitat for Humanity project more than a decade ago, and he joined the Bolte Construction family in 2013. Geoff became a literal part of the Bolte family when he married Bill’s oldest daughter, Aly.
Geoff is now partner and lead foreman at Bolte Construction. In his current role, Geoff is responsible for the day-today planning of remodeling projects, including design and plan direction, as well as managing job site duties and crews. His management duties don’t stop him from getting his hands dirty—he loves the opportunities he has to do some of the hands-on work!
Bolte Construction specializes in full design services and remodeling projects, including kitchen and bathroom remodels, room additions, lower-level finishes, decks, and other interior and exterior remodeling. The firm has three full-time employees and manages teams of contractors for each job. All of their workers are fully licensed and insured, and their remodeling projects include a two-year warranty. They charge by the job, not by the hour, so there are no surprises on the final bill.
The initial consultation meeting is free for potential clients, Geoff notes. “We work as a team with our clients to formulate the design and project plan, complete with cost estimates. We navigate the process from design to finish and pride ourselves on open communication throughout the journey.” Client satisfaction is paramount to the team at Bolte Construction, and that can only happen when everyone is on the same page.
In a typical year, the company does about 60 projects, which range from small remodels to large additions. The individualized attention that this firm can give to each job is one of the advantages of working with a smaller, family-owned and family-operated firm, Geoff notes. A couple of years ago, they did a particularly interesting project—an addition to a lake cabin. “It had two-story vaulted ceilings,” Geoff recalls. “We used tongue-and-groove construction, which made the exposed ceiling just beautiful.” They also added a pergola for outdoor entertaining, “complete with a Ford truck tailgate for a bench and a metal-faced bar. The client ended up with a spectacular space for entertaining.”

communication is even more important during a remodel. “For example, if we are remodeling a kitchen, usually the family wants to stay in the home,” Geoff points out. “We have to be cognizant of their needs while doing our job.” Also, there can be unforeseen issues with materials and products. “A special-order backsplash tile can take additional time, or a particular appliance may not be in stock. That is why we communicate during the entire process, making sure everyone knows what is happening. We treat every project as if it were in our own home.”
Many clients have expressed their appreciation for a job well done, and that is music to Geoff’s ears. “My favorite part of this job is to sit down at a table when we are making the final visit on a project,” he says. “The satisfaction you see is pretty special, and you know you have made a profound difference in someone’s life.”
Two such satisfied customers are Steve and Barbara, an Omaha couple who had Bolte Construction remodel their outdated bathroom. “We called, and Bill was a real person at the other end of the line—no leaving a message. That alone was worth a gold star! After discussing what we were interested in doing, an appointment was set up so that he could provide an estimate.” Bill’s second gold star? He was on time for that appointment. “He was not only prompt but also courteous, knowledgeable, and encouraging. Needless to say, he was hired for the job.” This pattern continued throughout the job. Bill shared every important detail and offered excellent advice. His crew was efficient and never left a mess. Steve and Barbara couldn’t have been more pleased with the final result, they say. “When we’re ready to undertake our next remodeling adventure, you can be sure that Bolte Construction will be the first call we make.”
If you want to work with a remodeling firm that is family-owned and -operated, brings energy and skill to each job, and will work with you every step of the way, the firm you want is Bolte Construction. You can reach them by phone at 402-706-0660. Check them out online at bolteconstruction.com.

Laughter
It Really Is Good Medicine
By Deborah Daley
A giggle, a belly laugh, even a snort—the sounds of laughter always make me smile. If I am having a bad day, hearing laughter can turn it right around. I cherish the times when my family gets together because we spend so much time laughing. We tell funny stories about each other from the past, and we laugh and laugh. Sharing laughter makes daily struggles easier to bear.
Did you know that laughter can help you both medically and spiritually? As children, we used to laugh hundreds of times a day. As adults, life tends to be more serious and laughter less frequent. But by seeking out more opportunities for humor and laughter, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happiness, and even add years to your life.
The saying “laughter is the best medicine” may have originated from Proverbs 17:22 of the King James Bible. The reading is “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” I have to admit, I like the snappier, more recognizable form. Either way, it rings true! Whether you’re cracking up at a sitcom on TV, giggling at a comic strip, or guffawing your way through a cat video, laughing does you good. Laughter is a great form of stress relief, and that’s no joke.
A good laugh has great short-term effects. It actually makes physical changes in your body. It enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles,
and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain. It also activates and relieves your stress response. A laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response, and it can also increase and then decrease your heart rate and blood pressure. It basically relaxes you. Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid in muscle relaxation.
Finally, laughter lightens anger’s heavy load. Nothing diffuses anger and conflict faster than a shared laugh. Looking at the funny side of life can help you put problems into perspective and enable you to move on from confrontations without holding on to bitterness or resentment.
Laughter is also good for you over the long term. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing the protective power of your immune system. Laughter can combat stress chemicals in the body with the endorphins it releases. These endorphins, known as the body’s natural painkillers, also help relieve physical pain.

As I’m sure you already know, laughter can improve your mood. Did you know that a study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor actually outlived those who don’t laugh as much? The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer. The sadness and depression that can accompany a chronic illness can be ameliorated with laughter. Laughter can help lower stress levels, lessen feelings of depression and anxiety, and may make you feel happier.
The social benefits of laughter have been well documented. Laughter strengthens relationships, attracts others to us, enhances teamwork, helps defuse conflict, and promotes group bonding. It can also improve your self-esteem.
So, how can you bring more laughter into your life? Smiling is the beginning of laughter, and, like laughter, it’s contagious. Practice smiling every time you look at someone or see something even mildly pleasant. Instead of looking down at your phone, look up and smile at the people you pass in the street, at the person serving you a morning coffee, at the coworkers you see in the elevator.
Another strategy is to stock your environment with things that amuse you. Post photos, greeting cards, comic strips, or other items that make you chuckle. Put funny movies, shows, or comedy specials on your streaming playlist and watch them when you need a pick-me-up. You can double the effect if you watch them with someone else and laugh together. You could even go to a live comedy club. When you hear laughter, seek it out and ask, “What’s funny?” Surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Find a few jokes you can share with friends.
As laughter, humor, and play become more integrated into your life again, your creativity will flourish. New opportunities for laughing with friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and loved ones will occur to you daily. With so much power to heal and renew, the tendency to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health. It really is great medicine! Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.

Clean Eatz Healthy Meals for Life
We all know that healthy eating leads to better health, but it can be a challenging goal for those with hectic schedules and lifestyles. Finding time to prepare regular meals for a busy family can be difficult. If you want to provide your family with the nutritious, healthy meals you wish you had time to make, consider Clean Eatz.
Susan Petri worked in corporate communications for 16 years before deciding to stay home and raise her children. As her children grew older, she thought about re-entering the corporate world. During the pandemic, she remembers sitting in a drive-thru for 45 minutes to buy smoothies for her kids. “I remember asking myself, is this the only smoothie drive-thru in Omaha?” She started to think about opening a business of her own.
Susan had a serendipitous moment when she ran into a family friend whose father was a franchise consultant. Susan’s friend encouraged her to contact him about franchise opportunities. “I was originally looking for a smoothie franchise, but he mentioned Clean Eatz. It was an intriguing concept. We are not just another food option. We are about helping people take the next step into a healthy lifestyle.”
Clean Eatz was founded in 2013 by Don and Evonne Varady. As competitive bodybuilders, they did not eat out because they did not know or trust the food being served. Their mission was simple: to provide people with a healthy place to eat. The company began franchising in 2015 and currently has 108 locations.
Susan opened Omaha’s first Clean Eatz location on June 8, 2023. She partnered with her sister, Alley Robinson, who serves as the general manager. Susan plans to expand and open additional locations in the future. “We don’t sell meals; we sell time,” Susan emphasizes. “It is a labor of love to offer healthy and affordable meals.”
Clean Eatz offers a variety of clean eating options, including a dine-in café, Grab ‘N’ Go frozen entrees, healthy snacks, and meal plans. The company defines “clean eating” as “Eating as many of the healthiest options in each of the food groups while also limiting the not-so-healthy options. This means embracing whole, natural eatz like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy proteins and fats. It also means cutting back on refined grains, added sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats.”
The café has an extensive menu, featuring low-fat, high-protein options, including Flatbreadz, Burgerz, Wrapz, Makin’ Muscle, Build Your Own Bowl, Sidez, Protein Smoothiez, and Protein Iced Coffeez. These made-to-order menu items provide healthier alternatives without sacrificing flavor.
By Angella Arndt
Grab ‘N’ Go frozen options include basic, low-carb, vegetarian, and extra protein meals. Popular selections include egg scrambles, breakfast sandwiches, mac n’ cheese, and “The Arnold Makin’ Muscle” wrap. Each meal contains macronutrient information for customers tracking their carbohydrate, protein, or fat consumption.
Meal Plans change every week and feature several entrees, as well as add-on items like salads, pizza, protein peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, Dessert Barz, spices, and their Shakez protein supplements. “Our meal plans do not require a subscription,” Susan explains. “There is no minimum, and they are customizable.” Customers can order the number of meals they want and can specify low carb, extra protein, or low carb + extra protein.
Clean Eatz uses fresh, simple ingredients, and all the meals are made on-site. “We provide much more than healthy meals,” Susan says. “We provide a community. Our frontof-house ambassadors are here to help our customers meet their nutritional goals.” Change is hard! Clean Eatz is here to make it easier for customers to continue their healthy lifestyle journey. Susan’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “We meet people where they are. We spend time with our customers to find out how we can help them on their personal journey.”
Susan loves being able to provide healthy food choices, especially to the younger generation. “Kids are so busy, and really active kids may not be taking the time for healthy food options,” she says. “So many of our customers thank us for giving them back their time because they used to spend a lot of time prepping meals. Many families with kids engaged in sports activities often eat drive-thru fast food on the run. Clean Eatz provides a fast, easy, and healthy alternative.”
Clean Eatz is located at 920 South 107th Avenue, Suite 110, in Omaha. Stop by and check out the menu! The café is open Monday through Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call 531-867-4909 for more information. Headache Pain
Causes and Remedies
By Janette Calabro
Have you had a “splitting headache” recently? Most of us have experienced that jarring pain that stabs like a jackhammer through the walls in your head, or the ever-tightening vice grip. Headaches can be unpredictable, wreaking havoc on how we feel and stealing precious time from our daily lives. There are many different types of headaches. Fortunately, there are also plenty of remedies.
According to the World Health Organization, headache disorders affect approximately 40 percent of the world’s population and are more common in females than in males. In the United States alone, approximately 45 million people report headaches more than any other medical ailment. Headaches are among the top three most common neurological conditions for most age groups.
Something you may or may not have noticed is that September often creates chaos for those who regularly suffer from headaches. Why? In a word: autumn. Barometric pressure increases, humidity falls, and the days get shorter, upsetting your sleep cycle. Lower temperatures might also trigger chemical and electrical shifts in the brain’s wiring. The end result is swelling that leads to headache pain.
Headaches are divided into primary or secondary classes. With a primary headache, the headache itself is the medical issue (though there may be contributing factors). Primary headaches includes migraines, cluster headaches, tension headaches, and hypnic headaches. Secondary headaches usually result from inflammation caused by an underlying condition like a sinus infection, a concussion, an infection, or even a stroke.
Most headaches are primary headaches, not caused by an underlying condition or injury. That means things like stress, certain foods, alcohol, and sleep habits are often the culprits. Pain starts in the nerves, blood vessels, and the neck or facial muscles.
Harvard Health notes that about 50 percent of people experience headaches at least once a month, 15 percent at least once a week, and 5 percent nearly every day. Only a small fraction of headache sufferers seek medical help. This is because most headaches are mild and disappear on their own or with the help of over-the-counter (OTC) pain meds. However, if headaches are chronic, the pain can drastically reduce a person’s quality of life.
When should you see a doctor about headache pain? Seek prompt medical attention if you get a sudden headache that feels like a blow to the head (or if you suffer a blow to the head!), pain with a high fever, convulsions, confusion or loss of consciousness, or pain in the eye or ear. These could be signs of a serious health problem like a stroke. If you’re experiencing “the worst headache of your life,” you should go to the emergency room immediately.
Lesser headaches may still merit a visit to your primary doctor or a neurologist for a proper diagnosis. The Mayo Clinic recommends contacting your primary physician if your headaches occur 15 days a month or more for longer than
three months, or if the pain lasts longer than 72 hours.
Severe throbbing and pulsing on one side of the head is one of the main symptoms of a migraine headache. Accompanying symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine pain can last for hours or days and can be debilitating.
In many cases, migraines go through stages. A few days before the headache starts, you might notice constipation, mood changes, food cravings, frequent urination, neck stiffness, and bloat. Frequent yawning can be a warning. Hours before migraine pain begins, some people experience a sensory disturbance known as an aura. This might be visual (blind spots, geometric patterns, shimmering spots, flashes of light) or physical (tingling or numbness in the face or body). After that, of course, comes the headache itself and its accompanying symptoms.
Sleep helps, but medications are often needed to mitigate the pain of a migraine headache. OTC pain meds like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can help stop a migraine or ease the pain if it has already set in. Prescription medications are numerous.
Triptans are sometimes the first treatment prescribed. They are vasoconstrictors that change how the blood circulates in your brain, so your doctor may not prescribe triptans if you have heart disease or unmanaged high blood pressure. A class of drugs known as CGRP receptor antagonists (also known as gepants) might stop a migraine in its tracks by blocking receptors in the brain. This class of medications is noteworthy because they are not vasoconstrictors.
There are other oral drugs, injections, and tools that help prevent migraine headaches before they start. Some blood pressure meds, like beta blockers and calcium channel blockers, are used as migraine prevention. Neuromuscular blockers like Botox prevent muscle contractions, blocking pain signals in the brain. Nerve stimulation devices and magnets can alter nerve activity in the brain to stop future attacks. All fascinating remedies! You and your physician may need to try more than one before you find what works best for you.
Cluster headaches typically appear as frequent headache attacks known as “cluster periods.” The pain is severe and is typically centered around the eye on one side of the head.
Other symptoms can include excessive tearing, droopy eyelid, and stuffy nose. During a cluster period, which can last for weeks or months, sufferers are often hit with headaches at the same time every day. The cause of cluster headaches is not known, though the hypothalamus is suspected to be involved.
Triggers for cluster headaches can include excessive alcohol use, street drugs like cocaine, bright light, higher
altitudes, overexertion, heat, and foods that contain nitrates (think bacon or lunch meat). Mental health conditions like depression can also trigger cluster headaches.
Treatments such as oxygen therapy through a face mask and triptans administered as an injection or nasal spray have been known to stop a headache that has already begun. In 2020, the FDA approved a non-invasive portable device called a vagal nerve stimulator to help headache pain. It stimulates the nerve by sending an electrical current through the skin and is now available without a prescription.
The most common type of headache is the tension headache. These headaches bring mild to moderate pain, often described as a tight clamp squeezing the skull. Stress, poor sleep hygiene, and bad posture are all triggers. The pain tends to creep in slowly and affect both sides of the head. Tension headaches might disappear in a few hours or linger for days, but they’re usually not severe enough to bring everyday activities to a halt.
Treat with ice, a cool washcloth over the forehead, and a gentle massage of the temples, scalp, neck, and shoulders. Naturalists swear by green, peppermint, or ginger teas for tension headaches. To avoid tension headaches in the future, drink plenty of water, limit time on your phone, and take frequent breaks at work. Sleep on your back or side to keep your neck in a neutral position. Don’t forget to make an appointment with your chiropractor!
Hypnic headaches are nicknamed “alarm clock headaches” because they often happen at the same inconvenient time— between one and three o’clock in the morning. Research connects these headaches to certain stages of sleep, though the
Need Some Space to Call Your Own?
exact cause is not known. Pain settles on one side of the head or all around the head and usually resolves within four hours. Nausea and light sensitivity are common symptoms.
A diagnosis of sleep habits is recommended to secure the best treatment for hypnic headaches. Do you have sleep apnea? Night-time high blood pressure or low blood sugar? Have you had a head injury or brain tumor? The overuse of certain medicines can contribute to hypnic headaches.
Aspirin is useful for treating hypnic headaches, and migraine pain meds might help. Some doctors recommend caffeine before bed. You heard that right! Get a diagnosis before trying any treatment. Ask a neurologist, hormone therapist, dietitian, allergist, or other practitioner for guidance.
Homeopathic medicine uses plants, minerals, and herbs for migraine prevention and headache treatment. These options can often be tried in combination with pharmaceuticals (but be sure to check with your doctor). Herb and mineral supplements like belladonna, feverfew, and lavender are often used. A cup of ginger, peppermint, chamomile, or valerian tea can also work wonders on a headache. Vitamin intervention includes magnesium, coenzyme Q-10, lipoic acid, B vitamins, and melatonin.
Self-care is important in the treatment and prevention of many types of headache pain. Rest. Try acupressure or hypnosis. Get a massage. Eat foods high in magnesium, like almonds, black beans, pumpkin seeds, and spinach. Manage stress levels with exercise, a healthy diet, and meditation. Talk to your doctor!

Jay Moore Landscaping Making Outdoor Dreams a Reality
It’s impossible to resist the curb appeal of landscaping.
Walk or drive down any street and look at houses or commercial buildings that have done an excellent job of landscaping—it’s easy to see that they have improved the quality of the neighborhood. Thoughtful landscaping has many other benefits, including water conservation, improving soil health, reducing maintenance labor, and creating natural habitats. Parks and tree canopies improve air quality and reduce noise. Studies have shown that just looking at plants and trees can reduce stress levels.
When designed and executed properly, landscaping helps preserve nature and conserve natural resources. It’s good for everyone! Sadly, not all of us have the time and talent to do this ourselves. Happily, an experienced landscaper can get the job done on our behalf. If you think your outdoor spaces could benefit from some professional advice, call Jay Moore Landscaping. Jay and his team of experienced and certified landscape designers can make your outdoor dreams into reality.
Jay has been in the landscaping business for close to 45 years, and he knows his stuff! He started out mowing lawns and doing small landscape installations. Over the years, this led to a thriving business. Today, his flourishing business can offer landscape design and installation for all types of custom outdoor spaces. They offer hardscaping like patios, pergolas, fire features, water features, kitchens, and artificial turf installation, as well as maintenance on any and all landscaping. Jay and his team regularly transform residential and commercial properties into inviting environments that reflect the owner’s style and can provide years of enjoyment.
One of Jay’s specialties is water issues, including wet areas in the landscape, wet basements, improper sloping to a house or building, and French drain installations. What is a French drain, you may ask? Basically, it is a trench filled with gravel and perforated pipe that redirects surface water and groundwater away from the problem area. The gravel helps filter out debris to keep the pipe clear. French drains can help prevent flooding, mold, water damage, and present or future foundation problems.
Jay can do so much to transform your space. Imagine a new patio with a water or fire feature and a living privacy screen made of plants! Water and fire features offer a focal point in the yard, whether you’re planning to entertain or seeking total solitude and relaxation. If privacy is what you are looking for in the yard, Jay can make your outdoor space more private by incorporating a variety of organic and hardscape materials.
Beautiful and thoughtful landscaping can make your

yard a more pleasant place to spend your time, and it can improve your property’s curb appeal immensely, Jay notes. Curb appeal is greatly appreciated by the neighbors who view your home and yard day in and day out. We’ve all been told that curb appeal is important when you’re trying to sell your home, but it’s also vital for home sales all over the neighborhood. No one wants to live next door to a yard that isn’t tended!
Whether or not Jay Moore Landscaping handled the original design of your landscaping, they’re happy to provide year-round maintenance for your landscape management. As they note on their website, spending time enjoying your yard and making time to maintain it are two different things. They can keep up the ongoing health and beauty of your property when you don’t have the time or inspiration.
Container gardens have been enjoying a recent resurgence among homeowners, and Jay is happy to design them. I love container gardens! They offer so many options. Container gardens are more manageable than in-ground gardens and require much less manual labor. In my opinion, decorating the landscape with container plants is a trend that we should all embrace.
When asked about his biggest professional challenges, Jay cites an obstacle that is also familiar to me: the wide temperature variances in the Midwest. “One day it can be 80 degrees, and the next day it can be 115 degrees, with the heat index,” he notes. “We really need tough plants here in the Midwest, since we can also get minus 30 windchills in the winter.” It’s worth the effort, though, Jay says. He loves seeing the results when his team finishes a project. “The customer’s joy and happiness with the end result is the best.”
We all need more beauty in our lives! If you’re ready to add more beauty to your yard, call Jay Moore Landscaping at 402981-7800 or send Jay a message at jay@jaymoorelandscaping. com. The office is located at 7607 D Street, in Omaha. Learn more and view case studies at jaymoorelandscaping.com.

Full-Body Treatments Look Your Best from Head to Toe
By Loretta McCollum
Many of us spend a great deal of time and money to maintain young-looking skin from the neck up, but what about the rest of the body? The skin is our largest organ, and we should give it the attention it deserves. Enter the full-body treatment.
What is a full-body treatment? It’s essentially a head-totoe facial. The idea is to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin, leaving your body softer and smoother than ever before. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways and may include the use of body polishes and scrubs, wraps, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, and massage. The procedure can last from 30 minutes up to two hours. Potential benefits of a full-body treatment include improved mood, increased collagen production, increased metabolism, and higher energy levels. It’s also an incredibly relaxing experience.
Immersion in a hydrotherapy tub helps detoxify and prepare the skin for your body treatment. A complete immersion in water that is infused with essential oils or detoxifying muds or clays allows the pores of the skin to open and absorb the beneficial ingredients.
Hydrotherapy reduces muscle tension and relieves pain; the feeling of weightlessness relieves tension in the limbs, supporting aching muscles and easing movement. Plus, hydrotherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, acting as a natural pain reliever, which will further reduce muscle soreness.
Cold water stimulates and invigorates, increasing the body’s internal activity, whereas warm water calms and soothes, slowing it down. Alternating hot and cold water treatments can help heal injuries, enhance certain bodily functions, and reduce inflammation.
Hydrotherapy may be followed by a body scrub or polish. Salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, or scrubs containing coffee grounds or coconut shells are common. Body scrubs exfoliate and leave the skin glowing and refreshed, removing dry skin cells and improving texture and cell renewal. This also increases circulation and eliminates clogged pores, which helps the body absorb nutrients.
Dry brushing is sometimes performed along with a scrub or polish. This involves rubbing a coarse, natural bristle brush over the body in a circular motion to help exfoliate dead skin cells and enhance the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins through the pores.
Body wraps are extremely popular treatments. There are many different types of wraps, and each one provides specific benefits. Seaweed is great for detoxification, as it is
very high in minerals. An algae wrap is used to detoxify and nourish the skin. Mud or clay wraps are for detoxification and reduction of cellulite. Shea butter or other rich creams included with a wrap work to soften and hydrate the skin.
Herbal wraps use cotton cloth, muslin, or elastic bandages soaked in an herb-infused solution. The body is firmly wrapped and then cocooned in plastic and blankets to seal in warmth. Herbal wraps are great for skin softening and temporary inch loss.
Aromatherapy in conjunction with massage is widely used as part of a fullbody treatment, and it is beneficial for both physical and emotional health. Different essential oils can calm, stimulate, rejuvenate, and detoxify the skin. They are used on hot towels, in lotions or oils applied on the body, or in a steam shower or bath. Lavender is one of the most commonly used essential oils; it significantly reduces stress and anxiety. Black pepper oil helps improve circulation and eases aching muscles. It can be blended with a carrier oil or lotion when used on the body.
Microcurrent can be a component of a full-body treatment package or performed on its own. We usually think of it as being used on the face, but it’s for all areas of the body. It is a low level of electrical current that mirrors the body’s own natural current. A benefit that has made microcurrent so popular is that it can shrink fat cells, which helps eliminate cellulite. It aids in the anti-aging battle by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving the texture and appearance of the skin.
A Vichy shower is a good final step in the process. This typically includes five to seven showerheads or a “rain bar.”The water cascades over you, removing all products applied during treatments. The temperature of the water can also benefit the skin. A warm Vichy shower balances, reinforces the immune system, and relaxes the body. The therapist can perform an alternate hot and cold therapy shower that oxygenates, detoxifies, and firms and tones the skin.
The full-body treatment is remarkable skin therapy and a wonderfully relaxing experience that will leave your skin softer, smoother, and healthier looking than ever before! Check with your local day spa, med spa, or massage therapist for your personalized treatment.

Accessorizing the Home
It’s All in the Details
By Robyn V. Powell
When it comes to refreshing the spaces of your home, the right details can make all the difference. Just as in fashion design, where accessories can make or break an outfit, interior design accessories can elevate spaces from the ordinary to the extraordinary! From statement accents to softly inviting accessories, these powerful details establish a home’s soulful spirit and its particular sense of place.
Your home’s design can have a significant impact on your overall happiness and well-being. The ancient Chinese practice of feng shui has been around for thousands of years and is based upon the organizational idea that the way energy flows through a space affects how people experience the space. In other words: a space that makes you feel good will reflect positively on your life.
If you’ve been living in your home for a while, you may have gotten very comfortable with the status quo. Sometimes we get so busy living that 10 years slip by and we haven’t updated our living spaces. Our surroundings have grown stale—our homes are stuck in a rut! Periodically rearranging your furnishings or adding new accessories is a simple way to refresh a space and infuse it with an entirely new energy. Changing things up adds a sense of joy and excitement about moving forward and embracing new possibilities. Accessories play an important role in creating or changing the overall feel and finish of a room by adding visual interest,
personality, and depth. As with fashion, styling with home accessories requires an understanding of both form and function, as well as an eye for when to stop.
Organizing and displaying accessories in a visually appealing manner may be one of the more challenging aspects of decorating. It’s about surrounding yourself with meaningful items. Sometimes, it’s about finding beauty in imperfection. A time-worn rug or a frame with a distressed finish tells an interesting story and brings a sense of depth. Adding the right touches creates a layering effect that is both pleasing and comforting, lending cohesion to a room.
Accent pillows are one of the easiest ways to transition a space into a new season while adding softness. The key with pillows is to not overdo it! Style maven Coco Chanel advised that, after getting dressed, we should stop to remove at least one item before we leave the house. This also applies to accessorizing the home (how many accent pillows does one sofa truly need?).
Our team of passionate professionals is ready to design, renovate, or repair your
or Commercial project.
“Scott has done multiple projects for my spouse and me and has always been personable and highly ethical and professional. He was excellent about updating us concerning progress and any potential problems and he kept the projects on schedule. His work and that of his subcontractors has been stellar. I highly recommend Custom Colors and Remodeling.”— Susan McAdam

A basic rule is quality over quantity. Select one pillow, in a bold pattern or color, to be the star of the show. Think of any additional pillows as the supporting cast. When crafted in elegant neutrals or subtly textured finishes, these pillows add interest while complementing rather than competing with the main attraction!
Never underestimate the importance of lighting in your home. Lighting should be layered to create depth, atmosphere, and functionality. Task lighting allows for focus and productivity, while accent lighting creates ambience and a cozy sense of calm. Hand-painted or terra cotta table lamps bring a subtle, classic accent to your living space, while a sculptural glass or wooden lamp base lends a casual and contemporary vibe. With so many styles available, table lamps provide an easy form of self-expression.
Invite family and friends to feel at home with nature-inspired elements and cozy textures. One of the best ways to bring the outdoors in is to accessorize with foliage. Live plants literally breathe fresh air into spaces. Artfully arranged airy branches are a delightful and sustainable low-maintenance accessory. Display your arrangements in classically inspired urns crafted in various shapes and sizes or in one-of-a-kind vases created from handblown glass or pottery. Embrace the changing seasons by filling vessels with fresh florals in natural hues. For a touch of holiday magic, add lush greenery and candlelight!
Mirrors are powerful design tools that can transform your space in surprising ways. Strategically placed mirrors create the illusion of more space while adding light and character. Placing mirrors near windows, for example, helps bounce light around the room, making the space suddenly feel bigger and brighter. Choose mirrors with shapes and frames that reflect your style.
Your home should be a reflection of who you are. As life changes and we gain new perspectives, our homes can change along with us. An interior designer or home stager can be a wonderful guide to help you achieve an interior that not only reflects your personal style but also brings a wow factor. The right accessories will welcome home the new you and let you leave your old self at the door!

Prostate Health
What Every Woman Needs to Know
By Leslie Bryne
We all want the men we love to grow old. Keeping an eye on their health can be as important as caring for ourselves. Men often put off going to the doctor, so the women in their lives need to know about prostate health and prostate cancer. When we know the risks and symptoms of prostate problems, we can encourage our loved ones to get the medical advice and screenings they need to stay healthy.
Things women should know about prostate health include what the prostate gland is, what it does, at what age a man should start having the prostate checked, and what symptoms indicate that it is time to see the doctor.
The prostate is a gland located below the bladder in men. It surrounds the area that drains urine from the bladder. The prostate gland typically increases in size as men age, so regular screenings are essential. The exact cause of prostate cancer is not known, although several things can increase a person’s risk of developing the condition, including age, ethnic group, family history, obesity, and diet. Many things, including cancer, can cause changes in the prostate.
Whether or not they are exhibiting symptoms of prostate problems, men with an average risk of developing prostate cancer should start being screened by age 50. Men at a higher risk should begin screening by age 45. The symptoms that men should pay attention to regarding their prostate health are not exclusive to prostate cancer; these symptoms can

appear with other prostate-related issues. Symptoms to watch for include a slow or weak urine flow, increased urge and frequency to urinate, pain or burning, blood in the urine, or sudden erectile dysfunction.
The first step is usually a physical exam in the doctor’s office. Many men avoid the doctor’s office because it can be an uncomfortable exam, but it is necessary. For men who are not exhibiting symptoms, a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is the first test ordered. It usually is part of an annual checkup for men over age 45. This test looks for a specific protein made by the cells in the prostate. If the PSA levels are high, further tests, including an MRI, are ordered. If those tests reveal high risk, a prostate needle biopsy will be recommended. This is an outpatient procedure, and recovery time is short.
Treatment options for prostate cancer depend on the location, spread, and type of the cancer, as well as the man’s age and general health. Surgical removal of the prostate is a standard treatment. Other options include radiation therapy and

hormone therapy. Hormone therapy involves using drugs that stop the body from producing testosterone. There is more than one type of prostate cancer, and the cancer cells tell doctors what type is present and influence which treatment is started.
For many men, a wait-and-see approach may be appropriate. This means that treatment is delayed until the cancer grows and the PSA number increases. Sometimes, it takes years for the numbers reach a level where treatment needs to start. If an older man with slow-moving prostate cancer is in otherwise ill health, treating the cancer may not be advised. If a younger man presents with aggressive prostate cancer, aggressive treatment may be recommended.
There are no known exact causes of prostate cancer, but there are known risk factors. It is most common in men over 50, and the average patient age is over 65. Black men have a greater risk than men in other ethnic groups, and a family history of prostate cancer can increase the likelihood of a prostate cancer diagnosis. As with breast cancer, specific genes increase someone’s risk for developing the disease. Another common factor is obesity.
To promote a healthy prostate, men can get regular exercise, maintain a healthy weight, find ways to reduce stress levels, and follow a hearthealthy, low-carbohydrate diet. Eating fruits and vegetables with antioxidants and more omega-3 fatty acids is recommended. One of the best things men over 50 can do to stay on top of their prostate health is to know their PSA number. That means they see their doctor annually to find out if they’re still in the low-risk range.
By understanding the risks and symptoms and by encouraging the men in our lives to take their health seriously, we can help prevent prostate cancer or catch it early, when it is most treatable. Your involvement can make a significant difference in the health and well-being of your loved ones. So, let’s take action today and ensure that the men we care about stay healthy. It can be a life-saving decision!

French River Cruise
#1 Destination for Wine Lovers
Wine lovers, rejoice! I have found the ultimate trip for you. It involves visits to picturesque historic villages, fine food and wine, a valley of vineyard after vineyard, fun and interesting tours, wine tasting, and more wine tasting. Did I mention wine? You can experience all of this as you float the Rhone River on a French river cruise. The next few months are the perfect time to go.
Lyon, Avignon, and Provence are typical starting or ending points of a Rhone River cruise. To be honest, I did not know much beforehand about the cities we visited on this cruise, only knowing the names of a few. Now, I know I prefer Lyon to Paris as a foodie destination. If you want to find your favorite Syrah, Burgundy, and Beaujolais wines, this is the trip for you.
For my artist friends, taking a painting class in Arles will help you channel your inner van Gogh and make for a very memorable experience—you can sit and paint some of the same scenes the famous painter did. Ancient Roman ruins and history can be found along the entire way, pleasing history and architecture buffs.
The summertime brings fields blanketed with lavender and sunflowers in the Provence region, but I really know you are there for the wine. You have nothing to worry about in that regard—these river cruises never run dry! My fellow cruisers agree that the experiences and stops along the Rhone are amazing. I advise you to book with a travel agent, as they can get you added bonuses like room upgrades, shipboard credit (you will use these for spa treatments and upgraded tours), and even a private guide if you are traveling with a group. Also, for sailing on the Rhone, I suggest you get a balcony room. The bridges are low, and you are not able to sit on the top deck as much as on other river cruises.
Now, let me tell you about some of the villages you might visit and what you can do on your upcoming French river cruise on the Rhone.
Lyon is France’s grand culinary capital. I recommend spending two or three more days here so you can take a foodie tour, a silk weavers’ tour, a cooking or pastry class, and a guided bike tour of the city. There is so much to explore, from old to new, from medieval to Renaissance. A whole day can be spent exploring the beautiful Parc de la Tete d’Or. Oh, and don’t worry about overindulging in the incredible food—I was clearly told that calories consumed in Lyon don’t count.
Tournon and Tain-l’Hermitage are twin villages connected by a bridge. The wine in this region is produced from the Syrah grapes that grow on steep slopes that require terracing. Take a scenic hike to one of these steep vineyards right above

Hermitage
and local viticulture, and get your daily fill of full-bodied reds.
With cobblestone streets so narrow you can touch houses on both sides while standing in the middle, Viviers is a window into the past. There are no major renovations or updating here so that they can keep everything historic, which makes for great photos. Get a tour of what a medieval house looks like inside while tasting more wine and local cheeses. Catch a game of pétanque (bocce ball) with the locals on your way back to the ship.
Avignon is known as the City of Popes because the Roman Catholic popes lived there instead of Rome during much of the 14th century. Here, you can tour the elaborate and historic Palace of the Popes, visit Old Town, and meander through the trails at Jardin des Doms. It was awesome to walk around Pont du Gard, the 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct, and then kayak under part of it on the Gardon River.
The city of Arles contains the inspiration for about 200 of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. You can actually go to specific locations in the city where he painted certain pieces and see how things looked from his viewpoint. Some of the views are still the same! The ancient Roman arena there still hosts concerts, plays, and bullfights.
These are just a few of the stops along the river cruise route on the Rhone. Tours include truffle hunting, olive tasting, wine and chocolate pairings, photography, and, of course, daily wine tasting! Being in Rhone Valley puts you in the center of some of the world’s finest wine producers. For those who love wine, history, and scenic beauty—you don’t even have to think twice about taking a Rhone cruise. Book it!

The Impact of Sleep Disorders
You Need a Good Night’s Sleep
By Linda Barnes
If you frequently have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or if you wake up feeling tired, you may have a sleep disorder. Women and older Americans are more apt to have sleep issues. Common sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome.
Health professionals are increasingly aware of how detrimental lack of sleep is to our health. When I recently underwent physical therapy after a fall, my therapist emphasized over and over the importance of getting enough sleep to aid in healing. Inadequate sleep impacts our ability to function well during the day. If it happens frequently, we risk negative effects on our cardiovascular, immune, and metabolic systems.
Even brain health is affected by inadequate sleep. Sleep allows our bodies to conserve energy, rest our brains, and repair cells. Cutting sleep by as little as 60 to 90 minutes affects our memory, alertness, and ability to do day-to-day tasks. We’ve all experienced moodiness, fatigue and mental fog after a restless night.
Two thirds of adults experience insomnia at least occasionally. If trouble falling or staying asleep is only occasional, self-treatment may be enough. When insomnia is chronic (that is, happening three or more times a week for three months), therapy, medication, or other strategies should be considered.
Excessive daytime sleepiness may also be a sign of a sleep disorder, even if we don’t know we’re having trouble sleeping.

Sleep apnea involves abnormal breathing problems during sleep. It may result when tissue in the mouth and throat relax and block the airway. This is obstructive sleep apnea. A second type, central sleep apnea, happens when the brain temporarily fails to send a signal to the muscles that control breathing.
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) involves uncomfortable sensations that cause an urge to move the legs, making it difficult to fall asleep. A serious but less common sleep disorder, characterized by extreme sleepiness during the day, is narcolepsy. People with this disorder can fall asleep unexpectedly, resulting in accidents or falls.
Diagnosis of a sleep disorder might involve a sleep study, which can be ordered, like any other diagnostic test, by your personal physician. If you normally sleep overnight, the study will be scheduled at night. A sleep center may be more conducive to normal sleep than a hospital setting. For some, a home study may be an option. A healthcare provider will take you to the room, where sensors will be attached to you and checked. Various functions like heart rate, breathing, eye movements, and oxygen levels will be tracked while you sleep.
Sleep specialists use the information gathered in a sleep study to identify a variety of sleep disorders. Once a sleep disorder is diagnosed, treatment can improve health, safety, and quality of life.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective initial treatment for chronic insomnia. Patients learn to handle anxiety and establish better sleep habits. Medications can be helpful but may have adverse effects. Lifestyle adjustments, such as improved diet and exercise, as well as avoiding caffeine, screen time, and tobacco, can make a real difference.
Sleep apnea often requires continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. This involves a face mask with positive air pressure flowing through it to keep the airway clear during sleep. Whether you breathe through your mouth or nose will determine if a nasal pillow type, nasal mask, or full-face mask is best. The latter is popular and allows breathing through either the nose or mouth.
Traditional CPAP machines offer a good solution. However, there are several newer options, as well, including BiPAP, nasal valves, or implanted devices. Dental specialists can help some patients with a custom-fitted oral appliance to prevent tissue from blocking the airway during sleep. ENT specialists have additional options. In some cases, surgery might be able to correct structural issues.
Restless leg syndrome usually can be diagnosed without a sleep study. The doctor may draw a blood sample to check for an iron deficiency, which can contribute to RLS. Lifestyle changes like massage, regular exercise, and good sleep hygiene may help. If not, several prescription medications can treat moderate to severe RLS.
Narcolepsy is likely to require a sleep specialist and usually entails an overnight stay at a sleep center for analysis. Medications may help but do not provide a cure. Stimulants may be needed during the day to prevent abrupt episodes of falling asleep. Newer meds are less habit-forming.
If you’re excessively tired during the day, you may not be sleeping well, even if you don’t have trouble falling asleep. Share your symptoms with your doctor and get the help you need for restful sleep.

Keeping Pets Safe at Home
Combating Curiosity
When you bring a new pet into your home, you can count on it to explore. It will check out every closet, cupboard, and cubby hole while it acclimates to its new home. It won’t ask you any questions about its surroundings; instead, it will explore by sniffing and tasting. Many of the items in your home are decidedly not pet-friendly and, in fact, should not be inhaled or tasted by anyone in your home. Before you bring a pet into your home, you need to take some steps to make this inevitable exploration pain-free for your new friend.
It’s not news that you should keep household chemicals and cleaners out of the reach of pets. That includes things like weed killer and anti-freeze that are more likely stored in the garage. Pets may also be inclined to swallow items that should not be swallowed, from batteries to dryer sheets, from tubes of superglue to pin cushions. The rule of thumb is that if pets can get to it, they might ingest it. Storage in high places will keep dogs safe. Cats may require locks on doors. They are excellent climbers and many love the challenge of clawing open cupboards.
Many common house plants are surprisingly dangerous if ingested. This is not a coincidence—toxicity, like thorns, can be part of a plant’s natural defense mechanisms. The list of plants that are toxic to curious dogs and cats is long and filled with beautiful flowers. Azaleas, tulips, daisies, ivy, eucalyptus, even the tomato plant (as well as unripe tomatoes) are just a few of the plants that can make your pet sick or worse. If you grow these plants indoors, keep them out of reach. In the yard, keep them fenced off or don’t let your pets near them unsupervised.
Many of the foods we humans enjoy are dangerous for our pets. If your furry friend sees you savoring a bit of chocolate or a handful of grapes or nuts, they will beg to share and maybe even grab a mouthful and run. The next run will be to the veterinarian for stomach pumping, which is a painful and costly procedure. Pets should eat pet food. Keep the human food out of reach. Likewise, medications that can help a human can be toxic for a dog or cat.
Pets need to be kept within a safe perimeter, whether or not they’re being directly supervised. Experts and pet owners have long understood the value of keeping pets away from danger while giving them freedom to play, and the technology has come right along with us. Invisible fences give you control of where your pet can be, both inside your home and out. Some fence companies provide training for your dog and will work with your pet to be sure the fence is doing its job.
One outdoor system involves a buried wire and a transmitter, establishing an exterior perimeter to keep your pet in your yard. The pet wears a collar outside. When the pet gets too close to the buried wire, the collar will warn the pet and then shock the pet to make it back away from any boundary you choose. What a relief!
By Jackie Byers
You can give your dog room to run in the yard but protect landscaped spots and keep your pet from digging up and eating your (toxic) daffodil bulbs.
A newer invisible system does not need buried cable. It relies on an app on your phone. You open the app and walk the boundary you want to set for your dog. When the dog gets too close to the boundary, it receives a shock. The advantage here is the flexibility of the boundary. Turn the app off, and the boundary goes away; it can be established elsewhere on another day. Invisible fencing has been around for 50 years, and it keeps improving. Some system offer camera access to your dog from your phone when you are away from home. You can watch your pet play 24/7.
Other systems block off small indoor areas. A friend of mine was tired of relegating his dog to a crate when he was not at home. Instead, he put an invisible fence around his sofa and his kitchen trash can and then gave his dog total access to the indoors. He no longer comes home to a trash-strewn kitchen, and his dog lost a few pounds of trash-augmented weight.
Fence out trouble for your pets by keeping harmful items out of reach, whether you’re using a locked cabinet or an invisible fence. If they could speak, they would thank you for it!

Stock Picking A Promising Premise?
By George Morgan
Every day, the Wall Street media—with a little help from their network friends—bombards the investing public with their“once in a lifetime”stock tips. Recently, articles touting stocks connected with the artificial intelligence revolution have flooded the internet. Many of these articles claim that getting in on the ground floor of this next tech phenomenon will allow you to retire well before your peers. And I don’t know how many times a week there’s an article on Yahoo Finance that proclaims that buying Warren Buffett’s latest acquisition will allow you to immediately move out of your parents’ basement and into your own Miami condo. The problem is, Buffett stopped managing the Berkshire portfolio 15 years ago…and you’re not a publicly traded conglomerate.
But there’s more to being a stock jockey than just picking stocks. Let me use a sports analogy to illustrate this point. I grew up in Southern California and devoted my days to playing golf and drinking beer (not necessarily in that order). One Sunday, we were playing the Bonita Valley course. On the seventh hole, which is a short par 3, my tee shot zoomed sharply to the right, striking a tree 10 yards off the green. Then, for what seemed an eternity, the ball rolled onto the green…and into the cup. A “once in a lifetime” hole in one! I went on to end the round with a miserable 138 total, something Tiger Woods could do blindfolded. The moral of the story? Every once in a while, a blind squirrel finds an acorn, and then dies from starvation.
Now, back to stock picking. Investing is not a one-sizefits-all proposition. Suppose you are a twenty-something living in your parents’ basement. Your total net worth is $2,000, in cash, which is sitting in an account at an online broker. In January, you read on social media that Nvidia is poised to become the next multi-trillion stock. You immediately rush to your cell phone, pull up your online account, and place all of your $2,000 net worth in Nvidia stock.
Over the next six months, the stock price doubles, and so does your net worth. Based upon another post on social media from an unknown source with unknown financial credentials, you sell your Nvidia and move your $4,000 into the next hot stock (put forth by the same unknown source). Anything could happen next!
Now, suppose you are a 65-year-old retiree with a $500,000 IRA rollover. In January, you listen to the talking heads on CNBC ramble on about the role that Nvidia will play in the unfolding AI revolution. Like your twenty-something counterpart, you decide you want to participate in this one-in-a-lifetime venture. Unlike your twenty-something counterpart, you are unwilling to bet the farm. So, rather than investing your total net worth in Nvidia, you only purchase $25,000 worth of Nvidia stock. We’re covering the same six months here, so the scenario is the same. Nvidia doubles, you pocket $25,000, and your net worth increases by 5 percent.
If, on the other hand, you understand that owning an S&P 500 index fund gives you partial exposure to all of CNBC’s “once-in-a-lifetime” stock picks, you might prudently purchase $500,000 of an S&P 500 index fund instead. And at
the end of the same six months, you would have increased your net worth by 20.4 percent.
To those readers in the first category described above: I operate under no illusion that my words will have any impact on your behavior. I bid you Godspeed.
For those of you in the second category: I respectfully offer the following for your consideration. Actively managed mutual funds provide broad exposure to selected sectors of the market. Their professional managers are well aware of the scenarios outlined above. However, their stock selection comes with a price. That price is the cost of their expertise and the cost of their trading activity. Their track record indicates that while their intentions are good, their costs tend to negate their efforts, leaving their clients no richer than they started. Over the long run, less than 1 percent of them have outperformed the market. Many of them underperform the market by an amount equal to their fees.
An alternative is an index fund that mimics the traditional market indexes. The companies who run these passively managed accounts recognize the folly of trying to use logic to outsmart an emotionally driven market. They will never hit home runs, but they do provide reasonable returns from a cost-efficient platform.
Prudent investing begins with understanding who you are and what you are trying to accomplish with your money. One-size-fits-all applies to socks, not stocks.

Bountiful, Beautiful Borders
Life at the Edge of the Garden
By Linda Sutherland
Is your garden feeling kind of dull and nondescript? Does everything run together, without any visual delineation of spaces? If you want show-stopping vistas and jaw-dropping impact, you need to create some bloom-filled borders. When you plan your border, remember that it needs to build slowly for maximum impact. Plan for different heights and colors to enhance your walkway, driveway, or secret path. A thoughtful, colorful border will jazz up your space in numerous ways.
It goes without saying that you should first think about your color scheme and how tall each plant will get when it is mature. You can go with a monochromatic color scheme throughout your border (that is, a series of blooms in different shades of the same color) or you can mix it up with different colors and textures.
You also want to think about the type of edging that will make, well, a border around your border. Wooden slats? Chunky stone? Rustic brick? Some kind of iron edging? The possibilities are pretty much endless.
So, starting at the back of your border, you want to plant your tallest favorites. Personally, I love panicle hydrangeas. They loom beautifully over the back of your border with their big, gorgeous clusters of white flowers that turn to shades of pink in the fall. They even hang on through most of the winter. They are truly timeless and very easy to care for. Keep in
mind that they spread! They can get four to 16 feet wide and three to 25 feet high. You’ll want to consult with your landscape designer or garden expert on which variety will work best in your space.
In front of the amazing hydrangeas, you could plant delphiniums. Their impressive spikes of flowers come in various shades of pink, blue, purple, or red. They will certainly get the attention of visitors and passersby with the drama that they create in a garden. This will give your border a truly timeless look that will pay off with big dividends.
Next, you might want to try some low-blooming dahlias in front of the delphiniums. Dahlias are unbelievably striking and come in such an array of colors that you can choose just about any palette to make a truly breathtaking statement.
I would also add some feathery plume-shaped grass such as Mexican feather grass into the mix to soften all the hard

edges and provide a lovely contrast to the high-definition foliage behind it. Siberian iris would provide a pleasant contrast because of their spiky leaf shape. Russian sage on the ends of the border will give it a softening look. I like to throw in some rugged boulders throughout to give it a natural look and yet another contrast. I usually also include a slow growing shrub or a dwarf conifer for contrast and definition.
Closer to the front of a border (and the edging), I always plant hostas. There are so many different species of hosta now, it is unreal. They’re not just leafy greens anymore! You can get white ones, blue-hued ones, variegated ones—they even have one now called “mouse ears” (for Mickey, I guess).
Once you get your hostas in place, consider planting some low-growing annuals to add some additional color and zing to your border. The color palette for annuals is so widely variable that you can pretty much paint any kind of picture that you want.
Depending on the size of your border bed or beds, you also want to think about the shape of your flowers. One dominant flower shape can set the stage for contrasting flower shapes. To conserve moisture and prevent erosion, you want to put down an inch or two of shredded bark mulch. And don’t forget groundcover plants. They can hide the bottoms of plants that have beautiful, soaring blooms but ho-hum foliage.
Garden borders are so useful for visually separating your garden beds and other plant life by creating crisp and clean lines in between. Borders give your garden a more finished look by defining a space and adding another layer of color and beauty to your home landscape. You can easily soften the hard boundaries of walks and driveways while adding structure to unify your garden’s design.
A few final notes: When planning your border, remember to check how much sunlight it will get. Keep in mind the width and density of the plants you choose so they won’t be overcrowded when mature. And remember that perennial garden border will take three years to establish itself. You need to have plenty of patience, but it will be so worth the wait!

Fixing Misaligned Teeth
We all appreciate a good smile. When you smile, it creates a positive emotional connection by signaling to others that you are approachable and welcoming. If your teeth are crooked, you may feel self-conscious about your smile, which might lead to fewer smiles and fewer positive emotional connections. Crooked teeth are very common, but that doesn’t mean you have to simply endure a smile that doesn’t appeal to you.
Teeth can end up misaligned for a wide variety of reasons. Both baby teeth and permanent teeth can simply come in at an angle. If an adult tooth is significantly larger or smaller than the baby tooth it replaces, uneven spaces can form. Jaw size and alignment, behavior habits like thumb sucking, development of malocclusion when the top and bottom teeth do not meet properly, genetics, poor dental care, poor nutrition, injury, early loss of permanent teeth—all of these factors can contribute to misaligned teeth.
Feeling self-conscious is not the only issue that should concern a person with crooked teeth. It’s often difficult to get into the tight spaces between misaligned teeth with brushing and flossing. If teeth can’t be cleaned properly, you’re more likely to end up with dental decay or gum disease.
Poorly cleaned teeth can also lead to halitosis (that is, bad breath). This is not just a social problem! The bacteria building up in hard-to-reach places in and around your teeth may not stay in your mouth; they can travel through your bloodstream, as well. This can affect your heart valves and lead to heart-related complications.
Misaligned teeth can also result in uneven wear on enamel. If bottom teeth protrude because of overcrowding, they can rub against the upper teeth. This compromises the enamel, making cavities more likely to develop.
Jaw abnormalities, specifically temporomandibular disorders (TMD or TMJ), can result from misaligned teeth. These conditions are extremely painful, causing discomfort in the face, neck, and even shoulders. In some cases, surgical correction is required.
Finally, did you know that misaligned teeth could result in speech issues? Intelligible speech requires the use of the lips, tongue, palate, and teeth. Severe misalignment of the teeth can make it difficult to form certain sounds.
Fortunately, many cases of misaligned teeth can be rectified. An orthodontist can recommend the best course of action for misalignment based on your condition. Treatments can include metal bonded braces, braces with clear brackets, braces with self-ligating brackets, clear aligners, and retainers.
Braces are perhaps the most common orthodontic treatment. Braces include brackets, bands, wires, and other components fixed to the patient’s teeth. Patients report for regular
By Deborah Daley
check-ups at which the wires are tightened to bring about additional movement. Braces are not removed during treatment; patients must clean around them carefully.
Clear aligners have become a very popular option. The best known brand is Invisalign, which is a system of clear, removable trays that are custom-made to fit over the teeth. They gradually shift the teeth into place. Again, patients visit the orthodontist at regular intervals to receive a new batch of aligners that will move the teeth further into position. One advantage of clear aligners is that they can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing.
Retainers are custom-made devices that are worn after braces or other orthodontic treatments. Their purpose is to keep the teeth in their corrected position.
Between 50 and 70 percent of American children will wear braces before they become adults. The best age to get braces depends on the growth rate and stage of each child. The most efficient time to wear braces is during the rapid growth of puberty. A general rule of thumb is that children should look at getting braces between the ages of 9 and 14 years (girls often on the younger end of that range; boys on the older).
The length of time a patient needs to wear braces varies based on age, the type and extent of correction needed, and the type of braces used. Most mild cases of misalignment require braces for 12 to 18 months. More complicated conditions may require up to three years of treatment. The more shifting needed, the longer it’s likely to take.
The time it takes to realign teeth is the main difference between having braces as a child or as an adult. The younger you are, the more pliable your mouth and bones are. Generally speaking, the earlier someone has braces put on, the shorter the length of the treatment.
Misaligned teeth are quite common and can lead to many health problems. Luckily, the issue can often be easily rectified. Seek the advice of an orthodontist to correct the issue, and start loving your healthy smile.

Garage Living of Omaha Customized Garage Renovation
Most homeowners don’t really think of the garage as usable square footage. Imagine turning that 500-800 square feet of home space into a usable area, taking the stress out of storage and even increasing the value of your home. That’s what Garage Living of Omaha can do for you.
Nebraska natives Theresa Nelson and her husband, Chad, purchased the local franchise of this national company in May 2019. “We got in the business because my husband, who was a contractor at the time, was looking to do a makeover of our garage,” Theresa recalls. “He found Garage Living, but the nearest location was in Sioux Falls. We made a visit, saw their products and company quality, and decided to sign on.”
Theresa and Chad each bring their own expertise to the franchise. Theresa was a police officer for 24 years before becoming a consultant for Wine Shop at Home, where she managed a team with dozens of consultants. Chad has been a contractor for many years, launching Legacy Construction in 2006 and Legendary Tile in 2010. At Garage Living, Theresa handles the office and showroom while Chad manages the consultations, the estimates, and their crew.
The company provides custom garage interiors that blend form and function. “We turn ugly, unorganized garages into beautiful, organized spaces,” Theresa says. Services include durable flooring, stylish cabinetry, functional slat walls for hanging items, innovative overhead storage, and even car lifts.
“If you call or reach out to us on our website, we set up an appointment to meet with you, talk over your needs, look at your garage, take measurements, and get an overall feel for the space,” Theresa explains. “Then we design the area and create a 3-D model to demonstrate how the individualized garage space can function for you.” There are a number of garage flooring businesses in the area, Theresa notes, but only a few also offer storage options and organizational design. Many of those offer only standard-sized cabinets that aren’t customized for the individual homeowner’s needs. “What is unique about Garage Living of Omaha is that we offer cabinets built to your measurement needs.”
Theresa estimates they do about 180 jobs annually, and the time it takes to complete a job varies widely. A simple job like flooring can typically be completed in a single day. A complete makeover (once a design has been approve and products ordered and delivered) can, on average, take 5-7 days. A complete makeover could include flooring, slat walls, cabinets, and overhead storage. “Customer service is number one in all we do,” Theresa says. “We strive to communicate and act as if the job and products are our own. We like to say we provide white glove service.”
Much of their marketing comes by word of mouth. Customer Brandon says, “Chad and Theresa and their entire crew are simply awesome! Theresa came up with a design for my work bench and storage units. It all came out better than I could have imagined. Their products

Comments like Brandon’s are just what Theresa loves to hear. “I love seeing the expressions on our customers’ faces when they see the finished job. They go from being completely discouraged, stressed, and frustrated to being so happy! One of our customers hosted an open house for the neighborhood to show off their renovated garage.”
In addition to great service, Theresa says, customers can count on great value with Garage Living of Omaha. “Our pricing is competitive. When you trust us with your garage renovation, you’ll be given exceptional quality, a hassle-free installation, and great service, all at a fair price.”
Their showroom, which features five mock garages that showcase multiple cabinet lines and products, is located at 20115 Oak Street, in Omaha. The showroom is open Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m-5:00 p.m. Their website, garageliving.com/Omaha, features a consultation request form, details on services, photographs of completed projects, and other background information. “How About Them Huskers?”
Think, Then Speak
Do you ever feel that the world has gone a little crazy? The things that people say can be, at times, astounding. When did so many people decide that it was okay to express our opinions on just about everything? Even though no one has asked?

Hmm…who do we blame? Social media? The pandemic? Politics? Ourselves? Perhaps. The challenge is to resist the temptation to join in and spout out our own judgment of a situation without knowing all the facts.

Treating others with compassion, patience, respect, and kindness seems to have become a lost art. Giving others the benefit of the doubt can sound like a very old-fashioned value. Thinking before opening our mouths? Some may find it impossible.

I learned this terrible habit, but I have known for a very long time that it is simply malicious gossiping…with a new twist. How do we stop? The first step is to look inside and do a gut check. How do we feel when we head down this path? Does it feel good to butt our nose in where it doesn’t belong? Would we like someone else doing this to us?

This quote is a wonderful mantra that is so very true. If we can stop and think about it, coming up with the all the answers to your friends’ problems, the world’s problems, or your family’s problems is mentally unhealthy. After all, how often have we found ourselves dishing out our opinions and advice, only to be ignored? I know for me, in the past, it was extremely frustrating.

If your home doesn’t have a fireplace yet, you don’t need to miss out—there are many options for homes without an existing builtin fireplace. If you would like a fireplace or have one that needs a face lift, Claxton Fireplace Center is ready to serve you.
Dan Claxton, owner and operator of Claxton Fireplace Center, has spent more than 37 years in the fireplace services industry. He was introduced to the business when he went to work for his father-in-law, selling fireplace glass doors with blower systems. Next, he worked for a lighting company, at which he created a fireplace division. After several years with the company, he decided to strike out on his own and opened Claxton Fireplace Center in 1994.
Dan and his team of professionals, including seasoned craftsmen, have over 90 years of combined certified hearth experience. The company relocated to the Oakview Mall area last year with an expanded warehouse and a showroom that has over 70 fireplaces on display.
Claxton offers a wide variety of services, both inside and outside the home. They are best known for designing and installing new fireplaces, doing fireplace makeovers, and providing chimney sweep services. However, they also design and install outdoor kitchens and fireplaces, fire pits, and tables. They install and service retractable awnings as well as interior and exterior vertical drop solar shades.
Whether you want to install a new fireplace or remodel your current fireplace, there is an option to fit your style and budget. Choices include direct vent, vent-free, wood-burning, and wood or gas stoves. Fireplace fronts can be personalized with materials like brick, tile, slate, marble, granite, stone, stainless steel, or glass. Mantels may be customized using wood, stone, and marble. Custom cabinetry can be designed to provide storage and display space.
If creosote builds up in a chimney, it can cause a chimney fire, which can lead to a house fire. “Cleaning and inspecting chimneys is an extension of what we already do,” Dan explains. Chimneys are swept and then inspected by running a color camera up the chimney. The camera checks the integrity of the flue, looking for issues like cracks, missing mortar joints, holes, or excessive creosote. Identified issues are repaired. Dan reports that they often receive referrals from chimney sweeps who do not provide repair services. Claxton also addresses the structural integrity of brick and wood chimneys. Masonry caps, or crowns, are installed on top of chimneys for protection.
When it comes to fireplace projects, Dan says, “we don’t just sell someone a fireplace. We handle the entire project
By Angella Arndt
from start to finish.” He personally meets with customers to conduct a needs analysis and determine what they want in terms of form and function. “I show them products that will meet their needs and can usually provide a proposal on-site, complete with the price.” This allows the customer to make changes or look at alternatives to stay within a specified budget. “We want to provide excellent information and pricing immediately so they can make an educated decision.”
Dan provides customers with a detailed quote, which is unique in the industry. “Our proposal contains a line item for every single component used in the job, including labor.” The proposal also includes the lead time needed for the project.
“If it is a multi-day project, we specify daily work, so customers know what to expect each day. We want to provide accurate information.”
Claxton’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “The customer drives everything we do,” Dan asserts. “We have the best team in the area! We know our business inside and out and provide consistent service.” Dan believes in doing what is best for the customer. “Hiring a business is an exchange of trust,” he points out. “Customers work hard for their money. By hiring us, they say they trust Claxton Fireplace Center. It’s all about treating them properly and addressing their needs and concerns.”
Dan finds this process very rewarding. “I love to see a customer’s happy expression when they see the finished product. It means they are extremely satisfied with what we did for them. A fireplace is not just something to look at,” he concludes. “It is a place where family memories are often made.”
Claxton Fireplace Center is located at 3125 Oak View Drive, Suite 103, in Omaha. The showroom is open Monday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Call 402491-0800 for more information or to schedule an appointment. We All Have Choices
We Can Choose to Smile
When September takes us from summer into autumn, we have choices to make. Clothing choices change as the weather cools. Moods may also change with the shortening of days. For some people, these mood changes go so far as to be a clinical condition called seasonal affective disorder, appropriately abbreviated as SAD. Attitudes about the weather also change. Many people have a love/hate relationship with summer heat and winter cold. All of these changes—clothing, mood, and attitude—can be managed, but it’s up to the individual to choose how they deal with changes.
I have friends who have one set of clothing for warm weather and another for colder temperatures but others who choose to wear the same things year-round by varying the layers. People who suffer in increasing darkness can choose to bring in therapeutic lighting to ameliorate their low mood. They can also choose to visit with their doctor about treatment.
At this point, I want to say that mood and attitude are different states of mind, but both can be altered by making conscious decisions. Your mood is how you feel and may be positive or negative. Your attitude is how you deliberately approach a situation.
It’s possible to turn a bad mood (negative) into a good mood (positive) by changing your attitude. Think of songs that
By Marge Shoemaker
make you smile. A favorite of mine is “Put on a Happy Face,” which suggests that your facial expression (a smile?) makes you appear to be happy and can help you summon the courage to face a negative situation with a positive attitude. Other songs that make me smile are “Happy Talk” and “Whistle a Happy Tune.” Smiles can make others feel better and brighten their mood or lift their spirits by creating a positive interaction. Smiles are contagious.
When I watch the people around me, I take note of those who are constantly frowning, and I wonder why they don’t smile. Of course, we don’t always feel like smiling. Some occasions, like funerals, are more serious than others. I think children are welcomed at serious occasions because they take adults’ minds off the seriousness…if only for a little while. After all, who can accept a child’s hug without a smile?
Yes! Children belong at funerals, especially those of close relatives or friends, because they need to learn to accept adversity…like the circle of life. This is when we teach our kids about life. Feelings are real and can be very powerful. Help kids learn to recognize their own feelings and “read” the feelings of others. Show them, by example, how to behave at certain times of their life…let them watch you demonstrate what’s appropriate. Give them the tools to cope with adversity and summon courage by throwing back their shoulders and donning a smile.
Hail Damage Dent and Glass Repair
Lately, it feels like a lot more people are driving around in“dimpled darlings”because of all the inclement weather we have survived this season. Is this just a cosmetic issue? How important is it to repair hail damage on vehicles? And what can happen if we don’t?
Of course, I know that dents on a vehicle can affect its resale value. If you are planning to sell your car or truck in the foreseeable future, it is important to take into consideration what even the smallest dent can do to the price you can expect from a potential buyer. I did not know, however, that a dent in a door or hood can impede the normal movement of a car and lead to cracked hinges. A large dent near a wheel well can interfere with the tire and affect an vehicle’s mobility.
Dents in your vehicle can also cause rust damage if they are not repaired. When a dent occurs on your car, it causes the paint around the affected area to crack. The cracks allow moisture to seep in and reach the exposed metal underneath, which, of course, leads to rust. As it turns out, then, it’s best to have those dents repaired as soon as possible. Taking care of the issue early is the best way to avoid spending more money in the future.
Now that you’ve decided to repair your hail-damaged vehicle, what process should you use? There are basically two ways to repair a dent in a vehicle: traditional repair and paintless dent repair. Each process is worth your consideration.
With traditional repair, your auto body shop will use a three-step process of bonding, sanding, and repainting. This requires the use of fillers, primers, paints, and solvents. These hazardous chemicals are not great for the environment, and the more complicated traditional process is slower and more expensive than paintless dent repair. However, if the dent is sharp and the paint is already damaged, it’s really your only option.
If you don’t have any sharp dents, you might be able to get the job done with paintless dent repair. In this process, the technician removes the panel behind the dent and uses specialized manual tools to essentially massage the metal back to the surface level, removing the dent. This process is faster and cheaper than traditional repair, and it doesn’t require any toxic chemicals. But don’t try to do it yourself! Paintless dent repair sounds like a simple process, but you should leave it to the pros…you may void your car’s warranty if you don’t.
Whichever process you choose, it’s wise to patronize a business that is established in the community. Some paintless dent repair businesses are out-of-state storm chasers who set up shop after a big storm, fix dents, and then go after the
By Linda Sutherland
next storm. Of course, they can do perfectly good work, but if there does turn out to be a problem after the fact, you’re out of luck because they’re out of town.
When your car is out in a hailstorm, it’s not just the metal that gets damaged. Windows and windshields can suffer from a dent or chip that leads to cracked or busted glass. Does a damaged windshield need to be replaced? If a chip impedes the driver’s line of sight or a crack is six inches or longer, the answer is yes. Small chips that aren’t in the driver’s way might be possible to repair with resin; an auto glass repair shop can let you know what’s possible. However, do consider that even the tiniest chip or crack can get bigger fast the next time you hit a bump in the road.
Next, let’s talk about paying for all of this. In many cases, car insurance covers windshield damage. However, the cause and extent of the damage will determine which coverage and deductible, if any, would apply. Your car insurance may cover the cost of repairing dents and scratches if you carry comprehensive or collision coverage.
Comprehensive coverage usually covers the cost to repair or replace a windshield that is damaged because you have hit an animal or something has fallen on your car. Collision coverage typically covers windshield damage that results from a car accident. Some companies offer an auto glass coverage policy, which could have a smaller deductible or none at all. Full glass coverage is an optional policy that’s usually inexpensive to add and makes glass repair more affordable. Whatever you choose to do, and whatever type of coverage that you have on your vehicle, it definitely pays to take care of those pesky dents, chips, and cracks before they turn into something worse!

The Hills Montessori Learning Center
Child-Led Learning for Life
For those who don’t know: Montessori is a worldwide education system that was founded by Dr. Maria Montessori more than 100 years ago. Dr. Montessori created a new vision of education for children based on the theory of education for life. Her vision included carefully designed environments where children of different ages work together or independently. They learn to work with multi-sensory materials that encourage them to touch, to think, and to experience.
Children are able to move freely around the classroom and choose activities that interest them. They are allowed to continue working until they feel that they have accomplished that activity. Once they reach that point, they must put the materials back in place. During the child’s work period, they are supported by their teachers, who serve as facilitators to help guide and monitor the child’s work.
By Linda Sutherland
With the freedom to choose, the children develop self-confidence and self-discipline. Montessori teachers engage the students and serve as the link between the student and the environment that they are learning in. This enables the students to master a skill and feel accomplished.
The Montessori method is thriving in Omaha, and Becki Carter, Director of Enrollment and Marketing for both Hills locations, couldn’t be happier about it. The Hills Montessori Learning Centers are beautiful early childhood education centers located at 6210 N. 107th Street in Omaha and 660 S. 193rd Street in Elkhorn.
L-R Elkhorn Director Gabi Zongker and Director of Enrollment & Marketking Becki Carter, along with some Elkhorn pre-primary friends
The Hills Montessori Learning Centers are based on the premise that children flourish with guidance and the freedom to work at their own pace. At the young age of three to six years old, humans have a natural readiness to learn specific skills. In classrooms at The Hills, you will find many learning materials that encourage independent learning. There is great freedom, within limits, and it’s a safe place to learn and grow.
Walk back in history with me to 1907, when Dr. Montessori opened her first school after being invited to create a childcare center in a very poor district of inner-city Rome. She worked with the most disadvantaged and unschooled children. At the time, many people thought that these children were simply unable to learn, but Dr. Montessori was determined to create an environment in which they could do so.
At first, the children were quite unruly, but they soon showed great interest in the puzzles that the doctor created. They learned to prepare meals, clean their environment, and take part in hands-on learning projects. Soon, the children were experiencing calm periods of deep concentration, and peaceful behavior. Dr. Montessori observed that the children were absorbing knowledge from their surroundings and basically teaching themselves.
People around the globe started paying attention to the results that Dr. Montessori was having with this form of teaching. By 1910, Montessori schools could be found throughout Western Europe, and the first Montessori school opened in the United States in 1911. This movement caught on very quickly in the United States.
Becki is extremely passionate about the philosophy of Montessori and loves this independent way of learning. She was born and raised in Omaha and began her first experience with Montessori when she applied for a job at a Montessori school when she was only 17 years old. She fell in love with the techniques and how engaged the children were in the classroom. She could see that it was a way of life for the children and that it fostered learning and playing with a purpose.
She also loved the fact that it was not a traditional, universal classroom. The students could choose their own activities and stay engaged throughout the day. When Becki got married and raised four children (who all went to Montessori schools), she became a parent volunteer and later returned to Montessori professionally. The rest, as they say, is history.
“I love that this school sees each child as a unique individual and allows them to grow to their fullest potential. Montessori fosters independence and gives our children a sense of purpose and accomplishment,” Becki says. She isn’t the only one in her family who thinks of Montessori as a way of life. “I have loved watching my daughters grow from being students of Montessori and then emerging into teacher roles,” she says. “They have been molded by their love of children and their love of the Montessori philosophy.”
Montessori educators view children as naturally eager and capable of initiating and pursuing learning, if provided with a supportive educational environment. If this sounds like the learning environment you want for your child, please call The Hills Montessori of Omaha at 402-884-8715 or visit thehillsmontessoriomaha.com.

Penner Bathing
The Leader in Walk-in Bathing Systems
You might be surprised to learn that one of the premier manufacturers of walk-in bathing systems in the world is in Aurora, Nebraska. It is called Penner Bathing. The company makes walk-in bathing systems for nursing homes, hospitals, rehab units, and private residences. In fact, says Gregg Holliday, Vice President of Residential Sales, Penner Bathing has tubs in every state, as well as in Canada, Mexico, and South Korea.
“I started with Penner’s in 2016 and worked with architects and corporate accounts,” Gregg shares. “In 2019, our firm expanded into the residential market, offering convenient, dependable, and easy-to-operate walk-in baths for in-home use.”
The Aurora native was in education administration for 21 years as a business teacher and the coach of several sports. He left education in 2013 and entered the insurance industry, which is where he first worked with the Penners. “I have known the Penner family for a long time, and they were insurance clients of mine,” Gregg recalls. “One day, they called me in to talk about coming to work with them. The rest is history.”
The Penner family has been providing quality bathing systems since 1980. Originally a home-based distributorship for Century Manufacturing, the company has become Penner Bathing, the national leader in the design and development of quality bathing systems. In 2015, Penner Bathing expanded their facilities with new offices and a national showroom that features many of the bathing spas. The showroom is open to the public by appointment.
Gregg takes care of those of us who need a walk-in bath at home. He guides customers through bathing options, helping them see how their bathroom can be remodeled to allow for a walk-in tub. Once the plans are made, Gregg works with installers to make sure customers are taken care of properly. “Purchasing a bathing spa from Penner is a unique experience,” Gregg says. “After an on-site evaluation, we help you choose from 38 different combinations of door swings, configurations, and colors. Then we build your spa to your exact specifications and needs.”
With many remodeling companies, installation is the last time you ever see them. That’s not the case with Penner Bathing. “We stand by your spa for life, providing training for your caregivers, 24/7 live support, and an amazing warranty.” The new 22,000-square foot facility in Aurora consolidates manufacturing and assembly operations to increase productivity and to meet the growing demand for bathing spas. Easy access to the manufacturing side of the business is a benefit for customers, Gregg points out. “We have had clients who purchased our product 20 years ago
By Deborah Daley
and now need a replacement part. Since we are a manufacturing plant, we can provide that part and walk the client through the installation.”
It’s not hard to fall when you’re getting in or out of the tub, especially as we age. Walk-in bathing systems have become increasingly popular precisely because they solve this problem. The variety of designs showcase various functionalities, from standard home models to sophisticated systems for nursing homes and hospitals.
“We have models used in health care settings, where the patient can be on a stretcher lift over a tub while the tub water is raised to submerge the patient. There are also ‘comfort’ versions, where you can recline in the tub. Given that this is our only business, we continue to make modifications tailored to our clients’ needs.”
One challenge particular to the residential market is that every bathroom is a little different. “We have had to think outside of the box in many situations to make a design that would work the best for our clients. While challenging, it is very rewarding to see the final results and hear from our customers as to how wonderful their tub is. To me, the best thing about this job is seeing how happy we can make a homeowner with their new bathing system. “
Larry and Janice, from central Nebraska, are delighted with their bathing system from Penner Bathing. “We really appreciated the fact that we knew the price up front,” Janice says. “It has been a godsend! Larry fell in the tub three times before, and we’re now able to bathe safely, avoiding home health care as long as possible. I can just take care of him at home, and Penner’s made it possible.”
If you are looking for safe, high-quality bathing solutions for long-term care facilities or in your own home, check out Penner Bathing. They are the nation’s leader and are located at 101 Grant Street, in Aurora. They are open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday 8:00 a.m. to noon, but you can call 1-800-732-0717 any time of day. Learn more at pennerbathing.com.

Fall Cleaning Hire Pros for the Deepest Clean
By Anne Yankus
With the weather finally starting to cool, it’s once again time to think about that dreaded series of chores: fall cleaning. Fortunately, deep cleaning your house every year is a breeze when you hire the right professionals to get the job done efficiently!
The first pro to hire is also the most versatile—a maid service! Maid services perform many different types of cleaning, such as semi-annual deep cleanings, regular routine services, one time moving-in or moving-out cleanings, pre-party or post-party cleanings, or even full-time housekeeping. If you feel like you need help more often than once or twice a year, picking up a service to do weekly or monthly routine cleaning may be a good idea. If “fall cleaning” is what you’re looking for, a seasonal deep cleaning job is what you need.
Regardless of the frequency you choose, maid services will typically include tasks like vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, mopping, wiping down all surfaces in the kitchen (including inside the microwave), tidying all bedrooms, and bathroom cleanings (including toilets, mirrors, showers, and floors).
It is, of course, possible to hire an individual to clean your home, and many people have great success with this route. If you choose to do your own hiring, you’ll need to handle things like interviewing and background-checking yourself, and always ask for proof that the individual is bonded and
Outdoor Living
insured. It’s wise to take precautions when you’re inviting an unfamiliar professional into your home. This is doubly true for a maid, who will be getting into all of the private areas of your home.
Another option is to go through a maid service company. In that case, they’ll take care of the hiring issues for you. If you go through a professional service, it’s still important to find out if they’re bonded and insured. Most services will be bonded to protect themselves, but you’ll want to verify whether they’re also bonded to protect you and your home from theft. Just like with building contractors, insurance makes sure that on-the-job injuries are covered and aren’t paid for out of the homeowner’s pocket. Checking up on any references the maid or service provides is also a great way to exercise caution.
You may have noticed that window cleaning is not mentioned on the typical maid services list. The reason for this is simple: Given the wide variety of window placement and accessibility, windows are not the easiest thing to clean

without the proper equipment or expertise. (This is the same reason, by the way, that you shouldn’t clean the windows yourself.) Hiring a professional window cleaner will let you reap the benefits of clean windows without the worry of injury. Most experts recommend having residential windows cleaned twice a year, so you can arrange to have them done at the same time as a semi-annual deep clean of your house.
Many window cleaning companies will do more than just clean your windows! Power-washing, gutter cleaning, window tinting, screen cleaning, and cleaning your outdoor light fixtures are just some of the services that professional window cleaners typically offer. Indoor services may also include chandelier and ceiling fan cleaning.
Another item only briefly mentioned in our section about maid services is carpets (and rugs). Maids will vacuum regularly, but that doesn’t cut it if you want your carpet or rug deep cleaned with the rest of your house. For that, you’ll need to hire a carpet cleaner.
While there are many different types of carpet cleaning on the market, for a true deep clean, you’ll want to stick with a company that does carpet shampooing or steam cleaning. Any other method will only scratch the surface and will miss deep-set stains. Rugs, especially antique rugs, are best sent out to a professional rug cleaning service. Rug cleaners will clean, rinse, dry, and repair your rugs before returning them to you.
Some carpet and rug cleaners offer a protection product that can be applied on top of your carpet or rug to help prevent future stains or wear. This may be worth the extra investment in areas that experience high traffic or heavy use, as the protectant will extend the life of your floor covering. If your carpet is less than five years old, it will probably still have the manufacturer’s protectant on it. After that, protectant can be added every 18 to 24 months (or every other time you have it deep cleaned).
There’s no arguing that deep cleaning your house is a chore, but with the right professionals on your side, it can be simple to cross off your list!

Window Treatment Trends
Functional Finishing Touches
When decorating our homes, we often focus on furniture, flooring, artwork, and paint colors, perhaps overlooking window treatments because they seem like just a finishing touch. That’s not all they are! In addition to bringing another dimension to a room’s overall look, window treatments offer practical benefits like filtering natural light, providing privacy, and helping regulate a home’s temperature. Let’s look at some ideas to help you select the best window treatment options for your home.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “about 30 percent of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows. In cooling seasons, about 76 percent of the sunlight that falls on standard double-pane windows enters to become heat. Window coverings can help with this energy loss by providing comfort, regulating temperatures, and lowering energy bills.” Of course, savings depend on the type of window treatment, season, climate, and how the window treatment is used.
The DOE study also found that 75 percent of residential window coverings are not being opened and closed daily, even though they work just fine. Being strategic about opening and closing window coverings throughout the day gives you a lot of control over the amount of light and heat gain or loss in the room.
Current window treatment trends include drapes, curtains, shades, blinds, and layered window treatments. Although the terms “drapes” and “curtains” are often used interchangeably, they possess unique features. Drapes are customarily made with thicker fabrics like silk, velvet, and damask, making a room feel more formal and luxurious. Drapes are frequently found in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms.
Curtains are usually made with sheer fabrics like gauze, linen, cotton, or polyester for a more relaxed and casual look. Drapes are typically floor-length, while curtains customarily cover the sill or extend slightly below. Drapes are commonly lined, providing better privacy, reducing noise, blocking light, and aiding insulation.
Although drapes are generally used in formal settings, they are being used these days in unexpected places to add a touch of luxury, softness, elegance, and coziness. Light fabrics are a good choice for small rooms, while heavier fabrics are better for larger spaces.
Café curtains are experiencing a moment and are a popular way to cover the bottom half or two thirds of a window. They are widely used in kitchens and bathrooms. Installing curtains with pops of color adds personality and interest to neutral walls.
Sheer curtains are an excellent option for utilizing natural light in rooms that do not require blocking out light. For natural textures, look for curtains made with linen or hemp
By Angella Arndt
in neutral or earthy colors. These options create a laid-back, natural vibe in a room.
Woven shades have been popular for over a decade, offering texture, interest, and light filtering, depending upon the materials chosen. Roman shades, particularly tulip-shaped shades, are once again gaining popularity because of their elegance and softer shape.
Blinds made with organic materials like bamboo or wood are stylish and environmentally friendly, adding to their popularity. These blinds add texture, coziness, and warmth to rooms. Faux wood blinds are better for bathrooms because of the typically high humidity in the space.
Layered window treatments utilize layers to add functionality and style to a room. Blending a sheer curtain with a heavier drape offers soft light and privacy during the day and blackout functionality at night for sleeping.
These days, of course, you can choose motorized smart shades or blinds. These products can be controlled remotely via an internet connection. A schedule can be programmed so each window covering goes up or down depending upon the time of day, desired light, or daily routine. These coverings offer convenience, privacy, energy efficiency, and customization.
With so many available options, where do you begin? Think about your goals. Do you want a formal or casual atmosphere? Think about how much light you want in the room. Do you need privacy? Consider window direction to select the best treatment to help regulate temperature.
Room proportions are an essential consideration. The right window treatment can highlight architectural features, provide balance, and change the perceived dimensions of a room. To create the illusion of a high ceiling, hang drapes or curtains as high as possible above the top of the window frame—the room will feel instantly taller.
Window treatments can enhance a room’s overall look and functionality. They add another dimension of style, texture, and visual interest. Additionally, the right window treatments can increase your home’s energy efficiency, provide more comfort, and allow you to enjoy your home even more.

Quick to Anger?
Empathy is the Solution
“It’s okay to be angry. It’s never okay to be cruel.” —Anonymous
We all get angry at times. Sometimes, our anger is directed at total strangers: the person who cuts you off on the highway, a customer service representative who failed to pass the class on kindness, or a cruel stranger treating another person with total disrespect. Other times, we find our anger rising toward a close friend, our spouse, our kids, or another family member. Let’s face it…the latter situation is a whole lot more personal!
“You can’t selectively numb your anger, any more than you can turn off all lights in a room and still expect to see the light.” — Shannon L. Alder
When I was growing up, I learned at a very young age that nobody really liked me when I got angry. I received “the look” from my mom, arguments from my siblings, and shunning from my friends. My gut told me that none of that felt good at all. It didn’t take me long to become a master at hiding those feelings and then burying them deep down inside. I’m guessing I’m not the only one who has felt this way.
“Where there is anger, there is always pain underneath.”
— Eckhart Tolle

In the last several years, I have had the time to reflect on my past, my feelings of anger, and how I had learned to deal with them. Through lots of reading, self-analysis, and conversation with my husband, Manny, I have realized that there is more to my feelings of anger than I ever knew. I have learned from Manny that when I didn’t deal with my feelings of anger, I would eventually explode…like a volcano.
“If you never heal from what hurt you, you’ll bleed on people who didn’t cut you.” — Tamara Kulish
I am the first to admit that I have a long way to go to becoming better at expressing my anger and resolving my past trauma. However, I now can feel when my volcano is beginning to rumble. And I have also learned this:
“The opposite of anger is not calmness, it’s empathy.” — Mehmet Oz
When I take the time to develop empathy for the person that I am angry at, my anger quickly moves toward caring and understanding. Now, I step back and breathe. If that is not enough, I sometimes have to remove myself from the conversation for a few minutes. This has taught me that if I take myself out of the action, I will be better off, the person I’m angry with will be better off, and life will be better overall. And that is what we all want!
