Aloha! Life is Great! Hello, all. I am very excited to announce that
I am now married to Manny Chavez! I have never been happier. Manny and I took our vows at Hanalei Bay, on the North Shore of Kaua’i, at sunset. It was absolutely spectacular. My brother, Tom, and his wife, Kristi, were there to celebrate with us. I promised details to all of you this month, so here goes! We flew into Kaua’i on Tuesday. Manny had arranged to have leis presented to all of us at the airport. (He told me he got the idea from the Brady Bunch!) From there, we made it to the South Shore, where we were staying. On Wednesday, Manny and I went to get our marriage license, meet our wedding planner, and pick our beach. The choice? Hanalei Bay. It is absolutely incredible. Fast forward to the wedding day. (We were married seven years—to the day—from when we first met.) Everyone had told us that, in Kaua’i, it is considered good luck to have rain. We drove up the coast with Tom and Kristi about an hour before our ceremony to show them the beach. As we were walking back from the beach, a very gentle sprinkle was coming down. Manny said it was his grandmother, blessing our wedding. The actual ceremony was a combination of Hawaiian traditions and vows that Manny and I had written for one another. The entire ceremony was so spiritual and so very special. At the end of the ceremony, the wedding planner, photographer, and videographer all started pointing to the sky behind us. We turned around, and behind us was an incredible double rainbow that had appeared at the completion of our ceremony. Wow. Manny told me it was my mom and dad, giving us their blessing. Yes, it was. The rest of the trip was amazing. We took a Jurassic Park helicopter tour, which let us see parts of Kaua’i that even locals do not see. We went to a traditional luau hosted by a family who has been doing it for more than 50 years. We took a sunset cruise of the Nã Pali Coast. I have to tell you, it is the most incredible place I have ever been to…though the joyous reason I was there may have played a big part in that feeling. I wish you all could have been there! Put Kaua’i on your bucket list!

Fashion Worthy PLAID
Fall Trends for 2019 Comfort and Easy Dressing By Holly Bell
The leaves are starting to fall already, and there is a certain scent, feel, and sensation in the air. What I love most about the Midwest is the beauty of the changing seasons. It always feels like a new beginning, and there is nothing like that first crisp fall day. An additional bonus to living in a climate with four seasons per year is that we get to change up our wardrobes to suit every season! Time to bring out those soft cozy fabrics we love to feel against our skin. Fall makes me think of faded blue jeans, washed to a super-soft finish, topped with a plaid shirt and a vest or blazer. It’s the perfect fall outfit for an easy-going day. If you haven’t indulged in the plaid trend yet, this fall is a great time to jump in! Designers are mad for plaid this season. You will find plaids and checks everywhere this fall, from classic patterns to brightly colored tartan to black and white houndstooth. Another great pattern for fall 2019 is camouflage. It is more than shades of olive green! Camouflage is more versatile and creative than ever this year and is being done in many colors. Top contemporary designers have included it in their new fall collections. It is just about impossible to get tired of the denim trend, as designers have served up every possible way to wear jeans. Love the skinny jean? They’re in! Love boyfriend styles? They’re in! Feel like you look best in a straight leg? They’re in! Even a VESTS flare that covers your shoe is in! The fabrications are also very diverse. From solid fall colors like rust and brown to faded and destructed, there is a style for everyone. My preference is a darker solid color made from cotton, with some stretch and a high waist. This style was once known as the “Mom jean,” and people thought they were unflattering. CAMOUFLAGE These days, the highwaisted style has a more flattering cut, and people just love them. Add a cool plaid shirt, half-tucked into your jeans, with a medium-width leather belt, and you are in style for fall. Vests and blazers are also important this fall. Adding the third piece to any outfit elevates it to a put-together look. Blazers are the perfect casual-to-work addition to any wardrobe. Designers love the tailored look this season, with a defined padded shoulder and a belt. Some blazers come with a matching belt; if not, just add one of your own to get in on the trend. The belted look is hot for fall! Another cool look is to wear a blazer with your favorite jeans and a ruffled, high-necked blouse. For

performance fabrics, consider fleece. Last year, it was all about the puffer jacket, but fleece is on trend this fall. Sleeves have become a focus for fashion over the last few seasons. This trend will continue with cutouts, ruffles, and Renaissance looks. Try a blouse adorned with puffy sleeves and ruffles tucked into a slim jean with booties for another knockout look. SLEEVES Now, let’s talk about dresses. What’s not to love about onepiece dressing? One and done! It’s easy, comfy, and brings a total look with little time and effort. The prairie dress has been haunting

us since spring and will continue its momentum. It usually features a stretchy waist, a cropped sleeve, and a long, billowy skirt. You’ll find these very easy to wear and as comfortable as a nightgown. They are beautiful this fall in florals with darker backgrounds. For cooler days, add a jean jacket or a leather bomber and booties to be on trend. This may become your go-to outfit. Two more great styles worth considering this fall are animal print and gold accessories. Wearing real fur may have fallen out of favor, but wearing animal prints certainly has not. Designers have not only loved the natural black, white, taupe, and brown of animal prints, they have gone wild with colors less true to life. You can use these items to bring color to your wardrobe and enjoy the bold feeling of rocking an animal print. Let fall fashion lead you to a new appreciation for the gorgeous upcoming season and the delightful changes it will bring to your wardrobe. Take a walk and feel the crisp air. Notice the how the sky is bluer than usual! Does anyone else smell cider and apple pie? sweet onion in 2 Tablespoons of olive oil. Add the tomatoes, mash them a bit, and let them cook for 10 minutes. Add 1 clove of minced garlic and 3 cups of vegetable or chicken stock. Break up the tomatoes and let simmer for 20–30 minutes. Add whatever seasonings you like: salt, pepper, bay leaf, basil, Old Bay. Stir in 1 cup of cream or half-and-half—do not boil. Leave it chunky or use an immersion blender to smooth it out. Adjust seasonings as needed. Serve with grated cheddar and garlic toasts. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers. Chicken and Apple Gravy Put 4 Tablespoons of flour and 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch into a zip-top bag, along with several dashes each of salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Add 4 chicken breasts (flatten them a bit). Shake the chicken and flour together. In a large skillet, heat 2 Tablespoons of oil and add the chicken pieces (shake off excess flour). Sauté for 3–4 minutes on both sides to brown. Remove chicken from skillet. Add a sliced onion to the skillet and sauté for several minutes—you may need to add another Tablespoon of oil. Add 2 peeled and sliced apples, and stir them around for a few minutes. Return the chicken to the skillet. Add 1 cup of apple cider. Cover and simmer for 5–10 minutes, until the chicken tests done. No-Peek Oven Football Stew Sauté 1–2 pounds of cubed stew beef in 1 Tablespoon of oil for 5–10 minutes, until browned. Set aside. In a lightly greased stew pot or deep casserole dish, layer 4 cubed potatoes, 4 sliced carrots, 1 sliced onion, and 2 chopped celery stalks. Place the beef on top. Mix 3 cups of tomato juice with 1 Tablespoon of sugar, 3 Tablespoons of tapioca, and salt and pepper as desired. Pour the juice mixture over

the meat mixture. Cover and bake in a 250-degree oven for 4 hours (or put everything in a slow cooker on low for 6–8 hours). Serve with baking powder biscuits or garlic bread. Zucchini Bars For the bars: Mix together 3 large eggs, 1 cup of canola oil, and 2 cups of sugar. In a bowl, whisk 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture, along with 2 cups of grated zucchini and 3 teaspoons of vanilla. If desired, add 1 cup of chopped nuts or 3/4 cup of raisins or chopped dates. Spread into a lightly greased sheet cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes. For the frosting: Mix 1/4 cup of soft butter with 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 pound (about 3 and 3/4 cups) of powdered sugar, and 3 ounces of softened cream cheese. Spread on cooled bars. If you prefer, skip the frosting and dust the bars lightly with powdered sugar. Dutch Crumb Apple Pie Bake a prepared pie crust for 5 minutes at 400 degrees and remove from oven. In a large bowl, toss together 5 cups of peeled and chopped apples, 3/4 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Pour the apples into the pastry crust. With your fingers or a pastry cutter, crumble together 3/4 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of butter, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/3 cup of sugar. Pour the crumb mixture on top of the apples. Place the pie pan on a cookie sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake for another 45–50 minutes or until brown and bubbly. WE

Chastain Otis Insurance Professionals Protecting Your Tomorrows By Vicki Jo Walsh
As the product of two local industry leaders joining forces, Chastain Otis Insurance Agency has been serving the Omaha area for generations. When the Chastain Insurance Agency (founded in 1953 by Dick Chastain) and the Otis Insurance Agency (founded in the 1930s by Rol Otis) teamed up, families and business owners in the area got a lucky break— an independent insurance agency with more than 100 years of combined experience working to provide protection for families and businesses. What does it mean to be an independent insurance agency? It means that their agents are not salespeople for any particular insurance company. They represent a variety of top-rated companies and can identify which one will best meet each client’s insurance needs. Being able to choose the best fit for each client often means they can find comparable coverage for less money. Another way that the agents at Chastain Otis save their clients money is with bundling. Many clients need more than one type of insurance. For example, you might need homeowners insurance, auto or motorcycle insurance, watercraft insurance, life insurance, personal liability insurance, or an umbrella policy. If you had to go through different insurance companies for each policy, you’d probably end up with a higher sticker price. When different types of policies can be bundled, more discounts are applied, and the total payment decreases. Chastain Otis is qualified to handle all of these needs, making it easier and cheaper for their clients to get the appropriate insurance. Chastain Otis also provides commercial coverage. Commercial insurance includes business properties, bonds, motor vehicles, business equipment, workers compensation insurance, and umbrella policies. Chastain Otis is able to provide these widely varying policies because of the vast industry education and certifications of their employees. Chastain Otis has 22 employees to serve your protection needs, and they’re already serving 4,500 clients in the Omaha area. Credentials are earned by each agent individually, after study and testing. The credentials you’ll find at Chastain Otis include Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI), Life Underwriting Training Counsel Fellow (LUTCF), and Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR). Having an insurance claim filed against you can be an upsetting event. It’s reassuring, at times like those, to have someone on your side, answering your questions and advocating for you. When you sign on as a client with Chastain Otis, you are assigned a customer service representative who you can contact with questions

or needs. If a claim is filed against you, a Chastain-Otis representative follows the claim and works with you and your insurance company to quickly resolve any issues, acting as an additional representative for your interests. Sean Chastain is the current president at Chastain Otis, following in the footsteps of his father, Dave Chastain, and his grandfather, Dick Chastain. Sean has been active in the business since earning his business degree from the University of Nebraska in 1998. He is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC). Sean also served as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Omaha and was awarded the Young Agent of the Year by the Independent Insurance Agents of Nebraska. Sean’s wife, Michelle, is also an employee at this family business. She places personal lines of insurance, issues policies, services accounts, and responds to billing questions. When they’re not working together, they take time out for Friday family movie nights with their children. They also enjoy sports—Sean gets away to golf, and Michelle is a runner who participates in the Market to Market Relay race between Omaha and Lincoln. As a business formed by community members to serve community needs, the family and employees at Chastain Otis are naturally active in giving back to the community. For 20 years, they have donated to the United Way with payroll deductions, and the whole company gets involved in an annual charity project. Other company-sponsored charities have included the Heartland Hope Mission, the Salvation Army, and the Ronald McDonald House. If you need insurance or are considering switching to a different insurance provider, you can count on the people at Chastain Otis to protect your needs. Their commitment to insurance education and community involvement help them maintain their status as the top family-owned insurance agency in Omaha. Consultations are provided at no charge—simply call 402-397-2500 to set up an appointment. All consultations are confidential and obligation-free. Let the professionals at Chastain Otis protect your tomorrows! Chastain Otis Insurance Agency is located at 10822 Old Mill Road, Suite 2, in Omaha. A Woman’s Work
Fright Night Why We Scare Ourselves Silly
By Sharon Knierim
Things are getting scary—it must be Halloween. Do you jump when someone shouts, “BOO!”? Do you feel uneasy in the dark? How about those moving shadows at the edge of the yard or in the dark corners of rooms? What was that loud THUD upstairs? You thought you were alone in the house, didn’t you? BOO! Gotcha! For a very long time, Halloween was a holiday enjoyed (or dreaded) mainly by children, who dressed up as fictional characters and visited every house in the neighborhood, looking for treats. Many adults felt trapped when youngsters sang out, “Trick or Treat!” The only way to get those kids off the doorstep was to bribe them with candy or treats. For the most part, these little spooks were good-natured and would never play a trick on someone who was giving them candy and goodies. Children and adults alike enjoyed this oncea-year festivity while creating long-lasting and highly treasured memories. The focus of Halloween and the methods of celebrating it have changed over time. Many schools no longer encourage classroom parties during this season, so the thrill of dressing up, parading, and garnering treats at school has gone by the wayside. Instead, organizations, shopping malls, and churches often host Halloween parties featuring costumes and treats. Some of these highly organized functions even feature games and prizes. Of course, adults are welcome to participate…if you

watch closely, you’ll see these grown-up and overgrown kids having lots of fun right alongside the children. One of the mainstays of long-ago Halloween parties was bobbing for apples. Today’s healthcare workers shudder when they learn how this was done. A large tub was filled with cold water and apples were added. Two by two, children and adults attempted to “capture” an apple with their teeth while their hands were held behind their backs. Does that sound healthy? Because we are now much more sophisticated about germs, there probably isn’t an apple bobbing contest held in the civilized world these days. Can you imagine the germs and bacteria floating around in that water and on those apples? If an apple left in the water already had teeth marks in it, a contestant could still attempt to bite into it as it remained in the water. Now, that’s scary!

Today, Halloween is all about scaring ourselves enough to want to leave the lights on for a few nights. Movies certainly have the ability to make our hearts beat faster. Characterizations of absolutely revolting humans, animals, insects, and otherworldly creatures abound. Modern special effects leave nothing to the imagination; for some of us more squeamish folks, it is almost more than we can bear. Still, we are spellbound by images too horrible for most of us to imagine on our own. We seem to have evolved from scary to shock and revulsion. Really, though—why do we expose ourselves to such frightening images and ideas? Professionals who deal with this type of phenomenon tell us it’s part of our nature to do so. Intrinsically, we seem to need a little excitement in our lives and an opportunity to question reality’s boundaries. It’s a good thing most of us only do this once a year! Recently, we viewed the movie “The Exorcist.” By 2019 standards, this is a pretty mild movie, but it really frightened a lot of people when it was first released. That fright affected even people who were known to be logical and not given to suggesting otherworldly activity. But there is no reason to lose heart if you relish the entertainment value of fright. It can be fun, especially if you’re watching a movie with friends who are willing to leave the lights on. On the other hand, if you are faint-hearted (and many of us are), you should not place yourself in this situation. The Halloween costumes of yesterday were primarily cowboys and pirates for little boy spooks. Of course, little girls liked to dress up as princesses and angels. In addition, there were plenty of sheet-clad ghosts out on Halloween night. Occasionally, a witch would show up with a pointed black hat, or Frankenstein might come lumbering up the sidewalk, but there were surprisingly few monsters. Fast forward to 2019, and complicated costumes have become an integral part of the Halloween scene. Much planning is put into assembling outfits to scare the daylights out of us. What we would not accept on any other night of the year is apropos on Halloween. Luckily for many of us quieter souls, these scary images are usually attending a private party rather than haunting neighborhoods. Have fun on Halloween, but leave the lights on, just in case. BOO! Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration He’ll Fix What Ails Your Rug By Jackie Byers
Cam Mayville’s career began with a carpet. It was not a magical flying carpet (though some of his clients may think he’s working magic on their rugs). It was a dirty area rug that needed cleaning. He took the job, cleaned the area rug, and went on to learn almost everything there is to know about the care and treatment of floor coverings. The name of his family business, Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration, says it all—they specialize in the cleaning and restoration of rugs. Cam’s daughter works with him and is learning carpet weaving. Cam shares, “Early this spring, I had to go to a water-damaged site to pick up 42 rugs for a rug dealer and save them. We were able to save most of them.” Cam enjoys facing challenges like that! Solving rug challenges has earned him an international reputation. “I’ve recently taken calls about rug problems from as far away as Australia and Mexico,” he relates. He loves swapping rug stories, particularly with his friend and mentor, Wade, who is in the same business. “Wade took me under his wing early and taught me a lot about rugs,” he shares. Cam also enjoys sharing the expertise he has gained over the decades. He teaches classes frequently. Recently, he traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, to teach a two-day seminar. He also keeps his eye on sites like Instagram and Facebook. Whenever he sees a question posted about rug care, he responds. He asks for a picture, gives his best insight on treatment, and offers his contact information. When asked why he is willing to give away his expertise, he shrugs. “I don’t want to think about a beautiful rug being damaged or destroyed by improper treatment,” he says. “My aim is to save them.” Cam’s interest is in caring for rugs, not buying or selling them, but he gets calls from all over the world from people offering him rugs. “I got a call not too long ago from the Archdiocese,” he says. “A priest had passed away, and they were disposing of his belongings. They offered me his 20-by-30–foot rug.” He told them he didn’t buy rugs, but they said they just wanted him to have it. “I was able to restore it to make it like new.” When you love rugs as much as Cam does, you don’t stop thinking about them, even when you’re on vacation. “My travels are busman’s holidays,” he says. “I have picked up exotic woven pieces from all over. The designs are truly beautiful. I have rugs as my decor here in the office. When people come in and see them, they know they are in the right place.” In addition to teaching classes to other industry

professionals, Cam also teaches consumers how to buy a rug, how to care for it, and— most importantly— what to do when something damages it. “Buying a good rug can be a major investment,” he points out. “Cleaning it yourself may damage it badly.” What is a good rug, then? Cam explains that the best rugs are made of natural fibers like wool or cotton. “Natural fibers wear like iron,” he explains. “They can be cleaned, repaired, and restored like new. Man-made fabrics cannot. They are made of viscose cotton by-products and wood pulp.” Because designer man-made rugs feel soft and look beautiful, Cam continues, they appeal to many carpet buyers. “They are often marketed as art or some kind of silk, but they just won’t hold up. They may show wear after just a few months and stain badly, even from water spills. Your pet’s accident may spell doom.” Clients love the personal attention and honest feedback they get from Cam and his team. On the website, arearugcleaningomaha.com, you can find testimonials like: “They took such good care of my pricey Persian rug,” “They are so professional and polite,” and “They brought new life to a rug that I was sure was beyond help.” In addition to troubleshooting for his clients, Cam works with his employees to build their skills when problems arise. “I want them to be able to do whatever it takes to keep wonderful rugs wonderful,” he concludes. To get in touch with Cam about a problem with your rug, you can visit the office at 10345 Chandler Circle in La Vista, 68128, call 402-2121275, or send a message through the contact page at arearugcleaningomaha.com. Fresh Concept
Medical Day Spas A New You Awaits! By Janette Calabro
It is said that a woman’s beauty grows as time passes. I’m not here to disagree with this, but a little time spent at a medical day spa can go a long way to help the real you shine through. What is a medical day spa? Imagine yourself walking out of a relaxing, luxurious spa with a younger look—a smoother silhouette, rejuvenated facial skin, and fewer wrinkles—all without the need for surgery. A medical spa (sometimes called a medi-spa) likely provides massages and pedicures, but they’re famed for their more advanced procedures. Medical spas often fuse the pampering of a day spa with specialized treatments like skin rejuvenation, anti-aging therapies, and services to tackle body fat. Procedures are usually performed by a medical doctor (often a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon) or, at minimum, under the doctor’s general supervision. The American Medical Spa Association describes a medical spa as “a hybrid between an aesthetic medical center and a day spa, with four elements: (1) the provision of non-invasive (i.e., non-surgical) aesthetic medical services; (2) under the general supervision of a licensed physician; (3) performed by trained, experienced, and qualified practitioners; (4) with on-site supervision by a licensed healthcare professional.” Medical spas adhere to strict safety and compliance regulations. Let’s take a look at some of the medical treatments offered to help the best you shine through. Moderate acne that appears on your face, back, or chest gets extra attention at a medical spa. Stubborn blemishes can be removed through excision. After a numbing agent is applied, a small incision is made in the skin to drain the acne papule. Minimal scarring is possible, but most blemishes heal completely without scarring. Microdermabrasion is another great option for mild acne and acne scars that cause pits in the skin. This procedure removes the outer layer of skin, revealing a smoother layer underneath. Microdermabrasion is often used to even out skin tone, remove sun damage, smooth out wrinkles, lessen age spots, and even minimize stretch marks. When the dead skin cells are removed, you’re left with skin that looks and feels younger and healthy. You might need up to 12 sessions, commonly performed one or two weeks apart. Expect the feeling of a gentle sander, though the highly pressurized crystals can be adjusted for comfort and desired effect. Mild to moderate acne might also do well under blue light therapy, a natural blue or violet light that reduces sebaceous hyperplasia or enlarged oil glands. This pain-free light therapy also treats sun damage and evens out skin texture. If you experience seasonal affective disorder or even just feel down on rainy days, blue light therapy may provide some relief. Blue light morphs into photodynamic therapy when combined with

light-sensitive topical treatments that are activated by the light source—this is often the procedure when skin cancer growths are treated. Expect to get comfortable in a darkened room, wearing goggles to protect your eyes. Patient sessions last from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on what is being treated. Even as technology evolves into new and better treatments, there are still some good old-fashioned services that aestheticians perform every day. Chemical peels are very popular. This procedure often provides the glow that we see on celebrities as they walk across the red carpet, but chemical peels are not just for the rich and famous! If you want to reduce fine lines under your eyes and mouth, erase age spots, and fade away scars or dark patches, a chemical peel is for you. Most peels use an acid solution to remove the top layer of skin, and they’re ideal for busy people who want a quick treatment over their lunch hour. Chemical peels treat everything from dry skin to acne, and they promote new skin cell growth. Some have dreamy names like “SilkPeel,” which combines microdermabrasion with a deep delivery of skin-specific solutions to treat a wide variety of skin conditions. Other exotic peels include Obagi Blue Radiance, which is a blend of acids for tighter and brighter skin. Expect a tingling sensation during the peel, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen after your treatment. For deeper wrinkles, women often turn to derma fillers. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Restylane and Juvederm can lift and contour cheeks, plump lips, and create volume essentially anywhere—think temples, acne scars, hands, and so much more. Hyaluronic acid is a type of sugar found naturally in the body. This filler is often used for marionette lines, smile lines, and nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the tips of the mouth). It hydrates skin from below the surface, triggering your body to produce more collagen. A newer version, Juvederm Voluma, can provide results that last up to 18 months— that’s longer than the expected 6–12 months for most hyaluronic acid fillers. Sculptra, a synthetic poly-L-lactic acid, remains one of the most popular fillers to fill in hollowed cheeks and reduce wrinkles. Sculptra works at an even deeper level and can use the patient’s own fat tissue (reducing the chance of an allergic reaction) in addition to boosting the skin’s own natural production of collagen. This low-
www.womensedition.com
maintenance filler produces long-lasting results—up to two years. To get a smooth look without lumps or nodules, it’s important to have a skilled surgeon perform Sculptra injections. Radiesse (made from synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel), a filler similar to Juvederm, treats deep lines and furrows, plumps up skin around the nose and mouth, and fills in hollow cheeks and nasolabial folds for a more youthful look. The results from Radiesse tend to last a little longer than what you’d expect from Juvederm. Request a consultation with your medical professional to weigh the pros and cons of each filler for your desired outcome. Injectable fillers have definitely evolved in 2019. They are no longer reserved for wrinkles and under-eye hollows. The more sophisticated fillers and techniques can create natural effects and make small adjustments. Some doctors treat with smaller injections over a longer length of time. The materials injected are less risky and are absorbed by the body over time. You’ve surely heard of Botox for freezing the frown lines between your eyebrows. These days, it is also used for other creative tweaks. For example, a touch of the neurotoxin at the base of the divider between your nostrils can lift the tip of the nose, or a baby dose just beneath the eyes can make them look bigger and more awake. Versatile Botox treats other medical conditions, too, like a drooping brow, eye squinting, even migraine headaches. Botox alternatives like Dysport are less expensive, and results may show up sooner (in 48 hours as opposed to 10–14 days). The “liquid face lift” is so called because it provides some lift to the face with injectables instead of surgical procedures. It typically combines injectable dermal fillers with Botox or Dysport to relax
facial lines and more. This procedure restores facial volume, reduces wrinkles, and brightens and lifts the face with a youthful glow. Women often indulge in the liquid face lift in their 30s and 40s to delay the traditional surgical face lift. Skin isn’t all that’s getting attention at medical spas. Many patients are looking for a flatter tummy and tighter thighs without invasive surgery. Most of the non-invasive body sculpting treatments break down fat cells with cold or heat, and most are FDA-approved. CoolSculpting blasts away fat with a suction vacuum applied directly to treatment areas, freezing fat cells until they crystallize. There are heat treatments, too, like SculpSure, which lasers away fat cells that the body subsequently eliminates. Ultrasound destroys fat using mechanical vibration, and TruSculpt creates an even heat with radiofrequency, targeting fat for a slimmer silhouette. Most hot or cold treatments last about 25 minutes per session and usually require two to four sessions. There’s minimal discomfort and no downtime. Vanquish, the newest radiofrequency therapy to banish fat cells, is similar to truSculpt, targeting love handles, belly bulges, and thighs without harming nearby cells. Some patients describe their experience as similar to a hot stone massage or lying under a warm blanket. If you’re looking to eliminate fat, rejuvenate skin, or oust away acne, seek advice from a medical spa to check out your options. Remember that treatment results vary from patient to patient, so consult with your doctor to find the best option for you. Let yourself shine! Home Cleaning Centers of America Saving Your Time for Holiday Fun By Marge Shoemaker
The holidays are fast approaching. Let’s be realistic: There are so many things going on this time of year that we have to set priorities. If cleaning the house is getting bumped farther and farther down your list, call Home Cleaning Centers of America (HCCA), a family-owned and -operated franchise. HCCA was founded in 1984 and is based in Kansas City. There are currently 43 franchises around the country. June Mourgis started the HCCA franchise in Omaha in 2014. “My kids were young, and I was working full time,” she recalls. “Trying to maintain a home and accomplish everything else was wearing me out. Something had to give.” Most of the home cleaning companies she checked out didn’t meet her expectations…then, she found HCCA. She currently serves as owner and administrator. Shirley Tingley, the administrative director, has been with the company for nearly three years. June appreciates the fact that the company is still run by the founding family. “Our district manager is a son of the founder,” June relates. “He also has a franchise, so

Suspicious Sniffles Are Allergens to Blame?
By Lindsay Thomsen
The sniffles often begin with suspicion. Is it the common cold, a fearsome flu, or annoying allergies? A runny nose could be a sign of any of these ailments. It’s important to understand the difference between the symptoms as well as when and who to call for help. What could your sniffles mean? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggest that the primary symptoms for allergies are a stuffy, runny nose and sneezing, though allergies sometimes present with fatigue, sore throat, or a cough. Fever, chest discomfort, and body aches or pains more likely indicate a cold or the flu. Viruses rarely last over two weeks. Seasonal allergies, however, can last up to 6 weeks during the relevant season. If you are allergic to something not based on the season, like pet dander or foods, your symptoms can last for as long as you are exposed to the allergen. People often self-diagnose their sniffles and wait them out. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 50 million people in the United States suffer from allergies, making it the sixth leading cause of chronic illness. If allergens are the culprit, waiting out your symptoms may not be the best choice. When an allergic reaction occurs, the immune system identifies an allergen as a foreign body and releases histamines and other chemicals to combat it. The most common types of allergic reactions are related to pollen, food, insect stings, animal dander, dust, mold,
medications, or latex. Allergic reactions can happen to anyone at any age. Young children are prone to skin allergies (dermatitis), which cause redness, itching, and small bumps. Infants and children are also highly susceptible to food allergies, though they sometimes outgrow them. Food allergies generally develop during childhood but can first occur in adulthood. The NIH says infants and children are most likely to develop allergies to eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and wheat. Adults are more likely to be allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Food allergies have become so prevalent in the United States that many restaurants post notices about the presence of food allergens in their menu items. Asthma is a long-term disease that impacts both children and adults. Many people who have asthma also have allergies, but they

are not the same condition. Asthma is specifically an inflammation of the airways that makes it difficult to breathe. Asthma attacks (increased inflammation) occur after people are exposed to a trigger. Some common asthma triggers include dust mites, pet dander, mold, and tobacco smoke. There are medications and treatments for ongoing asthma symptoms and emergency asthma attacks, which can be discussed with your physician. The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis. Symptoms include flushing, tingling in the palms or soles, lightheadedness, and chest tightness. Without treatment, these symptoms can progress to serious concerns like seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, shock, and even death. Anaphylaxis is not usually caused by common seasonal or pet allergies; the usual culprits are foods, medications, latex, and insect stings. An allergist can help diagnose and treat allergy symptoms. An allergist is a medical doctor who has completed two additional years of training in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies, asthma, and immunological disorders. According to The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), diagnosis often begins with a physical examination and allergy test, which offers precise information on what a person is and is not allergic to. Multiple types of tests are available, including skin,
challenge, and blood analysis. These tests are safe and effective for people of all ages. Once allergies are identified, allergic reactions can be treated or—even better—prevented. Avoidance of the allergen is a good place to start. For example, people allergic to pet dander can avoid having a pet or at least take some smaller steps like keeping pets out of the bedroom. Once they are aware of what foods trigger their symptoms, people with food allergies can avoid these foods when cooking or dining out. People with allergies to dust mites can take steps to eliminate dust mites in their homes, like specialized vacuum cleaners and mattress covers. If avoidance of allergens is impractical or insufficient, other options exist. Many people take over-the-counter or prescription medications to address their symptoms. Allergy immunotherapy (“allergy shots”) may also help. These injections work like vaccines—by repeatedly exposing the body to an allergen over time, the immune system can develop a tolerance to the allergen. If your sniffles won’t go away or keep coming back, consider that an allergen may be to blame. Once you understand your triggers, you can take control of treatment and prevention. Reclaim Yourself From Cancer Beauty Ideas During and After Treatment
By Loretta McCollum
There’s no denying that breast cancer can be a devasting disease, both physically and emotionally. It can rob a woman of the physical aspects that she believes define her femininity. A woman grieves those losses and wonders if she will ever feel like a “real woman” again. We all know that beauty comes from within, but it can be hard to stay positive about treatment when you barely recognize yourself in the mirror. Thankfully, there are many avenues available to help women rediscover themselves during and after cancer treatment. Reconstructive surgery, permanent makeup, tattoos, wigs, hats, and scarves are just a few of the ways a woman can reclaim her femininity and self-esteem. Hair loss is one of the most obvious side effects of cancer treatment. There is some good news in that arena: Those lovely locks may well grow back! In the meantime, consider a wig. Wigs are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever before, and they are available in a variety of materials and styles. Many insurance companies will cover part, if not all, of the cost. An early visit to a stylist is a good idea. A stylist who has worked with your natural hair can get a good color and texture match. Synthetic wigs come in a multitude of colors and styles. They are affordable, low-maintenance, and look and feel like natural hair. Color selection is basically unlimited, including non-traditional colors. A monofilament wig looks very natural. Each hair in
this type of wig is hand-sewn into a monofilament mesh, making it easy to part and style. Wigs made from human hair, although more costly, allow you to closely match the color and texture of your natural hair and provide more styling versatility. Consult with a stylist to determine the best choice for you. Many salons offer complimentary consultations, allowing you to “test drive” several options. Some also participate in the American Cancer Society program where they will fit you with a hairpiece and style it to your specifications. They can also suggest styling products, discuss possible scalp issues and how to treat them, and provide instructions on caring for your wig. Hats, scarves, and turbans are wig alternatives with limitless possibilities. They’re extremely versatile and affordable. Some hats even come with built-in bangs or sewn-in hairpieces. Turbans keep your head warm, and style choices abound. They can be easily ›››

accessorized with a favorite pin or brooch. A scarf can be used as a full or partial head covering, and owning multiple scarves allows you to coordinate with different outfits. A stylist can work with you on options. It’s not uncommon to lose eyebrows or eyelashes during cancer treatment. Permanent makeup and tattooing can recreate those shapely brows and lush lashes. You can even get permanent eyeliner for a polished look, day or night. From the perspective of the person undergoing the procedure, permanent makeup application is much like tattooing. An anesthetic cream is applied to the skin, and then a needle inserts pigment into the dermis. This technique allows for a wide tint variation. A professional tattoo artist or permanent makeup artist can advise clients on color and shape choices. Another form of post-treatment tattooing concerns surgical scars. Some patients choose an artistic approach, turning their surgical scars into whimsical works of art through beautiful tattooing. Women who have had a mastectomy often feel like the very essence of their womanhood was taken along with their breast or breasts. Thankfully, there are multiple options to help alleviate this loss. Removable breast forms that include areola and nipple detail can be used with regular bras. Most are made of silicone and appear quite natural. Many women opt for breast reconstructive surgery, using saline or silicone implants or tissue transplanted from another part of the body. Three-dimensional nipple reconstruction and areola tattoos can complete the reconstruction process for a natural look. In cases of a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, reconstructive surgery to maintain symmetry can sometimes be combined with the cancer surgery treatment. This combined procedure is known as oncoplastic surgery and can be a relief to patients who don’t want to undergo additional surgery after cancer treatment. Some patients prefer to opt out of reconstructive surgery altogether after a mastectomy or double mastectomy. This is sometimes known as “living flat.” If this feels right to you, go for it! Women who have survived or are currently battling this disease are prime examples of toughness, strength, and beauty. Know that there are many professionals out there dedicated to helping you feel like yourself while you’re kicking cancer to the curb. Tick, Tock The Value of Time “Top 15 Things Money Can’t Buy: Time. Happiness. Inner Peace. Integrity. Love. Character. Manners. Health. Respect. Morals. Trust. Patience. Class. Common sense. Dignity.” —Roy T. Bennett, “The Light in the Heart” As I look around me, I begin to notice that money seems to have become the new “religion” for a lot of people. It seems like everyone is in competition to make more, to have more, to one-up the neighbors. Hmm. Why? As the quote by Mr. Bennett points out, money doesn’t have the ability to buy us the things that really matter in our lives. Out of all of the things that Mr. Bennett lists, the numberone thing that brought his message home for me was Time. Without time, there is no way that we can develop the rest of the list. It takes time to be able to relax and be Happy. If we are running around like chickens with our heads cut off, there is very little Inner Peace. If we have time, we are able to step outside of ourselves and make decisions that uphold our Integrity. Without time, we cannot Love and we are not able to nurture and build our relationships into ones that are healthy and sustainable. Without time, we cannot reflect at the end of the day on the decisions that we have made and on whether we

maintained the Character of the person that we want to be. Time…without time, we rush, we are rude, our Manners go out the window. Our Health suffers if we do not have the time to eat right, exercise, and reduce our stress level. Time encourages us to slow down, move deliberately, and treat everyone with Respect. (This often means they will reciprocate by treating us with respect.) Time allows us to create and follow the Moral Code that we want to live by. If we have the time, we can build Trust in our relationships and have Patience instead of blowing people off. It takes time to develop and learn how to use our Common Sense. (How many adolescents do you know who haven’t had the time to develop this sorely needed trait?) Last but not least: Dignity. We need time to allow ourselves to find our own paths, ones that will allow us to present ourselves with Dignity and with Class. If we find ourselves without enough time? Let’s listen to what Mr. Stephen Covey has to say about it! “Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.” —Stephen Covey Amen!

Alone? Lonely? Lonesome? What’s the Difference? The Girlz met again recently for coffee, conversation, and companionship. As the makeup of the group changes, so does the conversation. This time, we talked about being alone and the need for friends—or at least other people. Em recently retired. Her husband is gone a lot, and now she’s ruing her retirement. “I didn’t realize how much my coworkers meant to me—how much we shared,” she laments. “Now, I’m alone most of the time.” Janie, whose husband died a few months ago, describes a lot of time not taken up by her other activities. “It’s really the most difficult in the evenings,” she relates. “It’s lonely not having an adult to chat with about my day or the news or something on television. The kids and the dog just don’t cut it.” Barbara comments on how her life has changed since her divorce. “With the kids away, I find myself alone a lot. Most of my friends are part of a couple or have kids and grandkids to do things with. It’s lonesome being just me. Even when I attend the theater, take in a concert, or go to a social event and am around other people, it’s lonely.” Geri says she likes being alone. “I’m around people a lot. I treasure my alone time when I can work on a project, read, watch television, or whatever, without being interrupted. Even if it’s just for a short while, it’s time for ME.” Tanya, who is taking extended credit classes for her job,
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
comments that her high schooler comes home and heads straight for his bedroom. “I suggested we do our homework together, or at least in the same part of the house, and was reminded that he prefers the solitude of his room. He says school is noisy, even in study hall or the library. It’s quiet in his room, with no interruptions or distractions… unless he wants them there.” Meri helps at a local day care. “It’s amazing how kids will play in the same area, right next to each other but not necessarily with each other,” she comments. “They may be sharing blocks, or coloring pages, or dressing up, and still not intermingle or combine their activities. They’re alone but not alone…it’s like they play in parallel worlds.” I’ve seen adults do the same thing. Maggie does a lot of driving. “I like that time alone. I let my mind wander. I may spend time remembering the past or planning for the future. It’s time to think about stuff in general.” We came to the conclusion that people (and kids are people, too) need friends—real people friends, not just social media friends. Ours is a social society. We share memories, laughter, and tears and give hugs when they’re needed. We allow others time to themselves. We may want to be alone sometimes, but never lonely or lonesome. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Home Security Systems Find the Right System for Your Home
By Robyn V. Powell
Crime statistics over the past few years have led a growing number of Americans to invest in a home security system. A property crime occurs every 3.7 seconds, resulting in millions of dollars in damages and losses. Equipping your home or business with a security system reduces the likelihood of a break-in by 33 percent. Thanks to new wireless technologies and the increasing use of smartphone apps, achieving home security has never been easier or more affordable. Given the unprecedented number of options on the market, one thing is certain—home security is not a one-size-fits-all solution. For today’s consumers, the challenge becomes one of education, of understanding your security goals and identifying the products that will best meet those needs. Security systems have evolved to do much more than keep intruders out of your home. They let you communicate with the kids when they get home from school, monitor your home’s lighting and cooling systems, and even let you know when a package has arrived. Choosing the right equipment package, payment plan, and features for your needs depends on what you want to do with your system. How do you choose? Begin by asking yourself a few questions. What am I protecting? Do I need a nanny cam to keep an eye on the little ones or do I need a sensor to catch a leaky pipe? What is my family’s routine? What is my budget? How big is my home or office? The answers to these questions will guide you to what types of features you want,
along with the best method of installation and what size of system you need. In today’s market, there are essentially three main types of security system packages: home automation, security equipment, and environmental monitoring. Smart tech adjusts to your family’s schedule or preferences with convenient home automation features that allow you to control the system from within your home or remotely through apps on your smartphone. Adjust your home’s thermostat on your drive home from work or let the dog walker in the house while you’re on vacation, all with a simple tap on your phone. If you’re concerned about issues like intrusion, theft, or vandalism, traditional home security devices like alarms, glass break sensors, and outdoor motion detectors are useful. Doorbell cameras add another layer of security and convenience, letting you speak remotely ›››

to anyone at your door. This allows you to greet guests, shoo away solicitors, or talk to the mail carrier. An added bonus—doorbell cameras record anyone who comes to your doorstep, including package thieves! If you live in an older home and worry about home systems that could fail, consider environmental monitoring that can give you peace of mind with features like smoke detectors, leak detectors, and pipe freeze detectors. Until recently, a consumer’s only choice for home security was to hire an alarm company to install a hard-wired system. This method required a network of wires to be run through your home, along with the installation of a keypad near a door. Most traditional alarm companies have moved to wireless options, offering the latest in technologies to consumers who want a complete solution. These companies have expanded to include smart home automation products such as smart locks and app-controlled lighting and thermostats. If working with the experts is important to you, then going with a professionally installed home security system is a great option. You won’t have to lift a finger. Companies will send a trained professional to your home for a consultation. In addition to getting a custom package to meet your specific needs, you can discuss your security priorities, budget, and expectations with a real person who has years of industry experience. If you want to guarantee 24/7 protection of your home, professional alarm monitoring is the best system for you. In the event of a break-in or a fire, the monitoring company will immediately contact you to verify the situation and will dispatch police, firefighters, and an ambulance in an emergency. Unmonitored systems may sound an alarm, but your home will continue to be robbed or burn until you or a neighbor calls for help. Most security companies carry similar products but bundle them differently. To avoid over-equipping your home with unnecessary bells and whistles, keep your security priorities in mind when reviewing the various packages. At the end of the day, the goal of home security is to provide peace of mind. The very best security system for your home is the one that provides the safety and security you want without breaking your budget or being too complicated. Custom Gems A One-of-a-Kind Store By Ann Stergiou
When Tim Kautsch was a young boy, he and his brother, Kevin, collected rocks during their family vacations to Colorado and South Dakota. Boxes and boxes of rocks made their way back to the Kautsch home in Nebraska. At the time, Tim’s father was taking lapidary classes (that is, the art of cutting stones) at an Omaha store called Custom Gems. The owners of the store, Ed and Erma Pharaoh, heard about Tim’s rock collection and told him he should learn to make jewelry with his stones. Tim’s first reaction was, “No way, that’s girl stuff.” The more he learned about lapidary, though, the cooler it seemed. Eventually, he decided to join in the fun. He had no idea he was headed for a career repairing, creating, and designing jewelry. Tim started taking classes at Custom Gems in 1989, after it had moved to its current location off 84th and Frederick. Two years later, after he graduated from high school in 1991, he went full-time at Custom Gems and earned his gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America. In 2005, he took over the management of Custom Gems, and he became the owner in 2009. “Owning a business is not easy,” Tim shares. “Balancing the duties required of being a business owner can be stressful.” Fortunately, Tim has several really good people to share in these duties, and that is his top recommendation to anyone thinking of starting a business of their own: “Surround yourself with good people.” At Custom Gems, these good people include Dustin Clayton, Heather Steele, Inna Zevakina, and Tim’s brother, Kevin Kautsch. Dustin specializes in stone setting and customized pieces, Kevin primarily handles laser welding and repairs, Heather makes jewelry, and Inna takes care of bead restringing. Tim is an expert in all these areas, and he is delighted to work with so many talented people, all of whom help each other out with everything that’s necessary to keep their customers happy. Added together, this talented group brings over 70 years of collective experience to Custom Gems, and they’re all ready to create, repair, design, or polish your next special piece. People rely on Tim and his staff for many different things, like repairing damaged jewelry, creating a custom-designed piece, or reusing their own sentimental pieces to create something more modern. “People trust me with their family heirlooms,” Tim acknowledges, and he doesn’t take that responsibility lightly. His customer service philosophy is simple: “Make sure everybody’s happy, be honest, and do the best you can.” He never wants anyone to walk out of

his store not liking their purchase. “I hate having unsatisfied customers, and I will do anything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.” As you can imagine, this philosophy leads to a lot of repeat customers. A card from customer Susan Matthews reads: “I want to thank you for the beautiful ring you created for me. I’m totally impressed by the workmanship. You have yet to disappoint me. I’ve already received many oohs and ahhs.” If all of this sounds good so far, just wait until you actually visit the store. You’ll see displays of stones, rocks, gems, fossils, jewelry, and much more. These items come from all over the world, including places as far flung as Brazil, Madagascar, and Russia. The store is currently undergoing an expansion to make room for their newest designer and to create a larger, more spacious layout to display their vast array of jewelry and art. In the back of the store is a full laboratory, which houses everything they need to repair and create jewelry. All of the work at Custom Gems is done on-site. The lab boasts laser welders, rock tumblers, a repair station, a casting station, and much more. Customer Tara Collister shares, “My husband lost the emerald out of his wedding ring.” She took it back to the place it was purchased, and they couldn’t fix it. Fortunately, the team at Custom Gems was able to get the job done. “They did a phenomenal job, and it was done sooner than I expected,” she says. “I will definitely use them again.” For customers who like to make their own jewelry, Custom Gems sells everything from loose stones and gems to chains and settings, as well as all the tools and polishers a project may call for. They also carry the largest inventory of minerals and fossils in Omaha. Whether you need a repair, want a piece customdesigned, or like to make your own jewelry, you should check out Custom Gems. You won’t be disappointed. Custom Gems is located at 8487 Frederick Street. They are open Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Now that there’s a chill in the air, it’s a great time to think about ways to keep your home warm. Sure, you probably already have central heating, but what about adding a fireplace? Whether you have an existing hearth in your home or want to build new, a modern fireplace can be a great way to keep your house warm with a little flair! There are many different types of fireplaces on the market today, including traditional, enclosed, directvented or ventless built-in, and wall-mounted. You can also have an existing fireplace converted into a different style. When people think of having a fireplace in their home, a traditional open hearth fireplace is usually what comes to mind. These types of fireplaces are usually wood-burning and made of brick or stone. They have the benefit of excellent localized heat and the authentic smell and sound of burning wood. However, traditional fireplaces tend to fall short when it comes to heating large open spaces, and they can be quite expensive to install if you don’t have an existing chimney and hearth. Enclosed fireplaces, on the other hand, feature a large glass panel that traps the heat inside your house more effectively (by allowing less to escape up the chimney) than a traditional open hearth. Enclosed fireplaces, like traditional, are also wood-burning. One thing to keep in mind about any wood-burning fireplace

model is cleaning. Unlike gas, ethanol, or electric heat sources, burning wood creates natural deposits in the chimney and hearth that will require regular cleaning. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that all chimneys, fireplaces, and vents should be cleaned and checked for blockages once per year. Even with a gas fireplace, you’re not off the hook for cleaning. You should have the vents checked and cleaned regularly, especially if you use them infrequently, in case animals have decided to nest in your chimney. Your annual cleaning is also a great time for a chimney professional to identify any other underlying problems that may need repair or more in-depth cleaning. Next up is a direct-vented, built-in, gas-burning fireplace. Direct-vented models can be constructed new or installed in existing chimneys. For a cheaper and less-invasive alternative, you can have a pipe installed. The benefits of a pipe chimney over a traditional ›››

brick chimney is that it can be installed in any room of your house and doesn’t require as much change to your house’s existing structure. Direct-vented fireplaces have a traditional yellow flame, in keeping with the wood-burning aesthetic. Ventless fireplaces, on the other hand, have blue flames. Because of their cleaner-burning flames, ventless fireplaces don’t require any sort of chimney—this makes them one of the easiest types of fireplaces to install. On the downside, the lack of a chimney does raise a slight chance that some contaminants may enter your home. If you like the convenience of a gas fireplace but the aesthetic of a traditional wood-burning hearth, you can get a log set to install in your gas fireplace. This is basically a ceramic log (or stack of logs) that has the gas element installed within it, giving it that old-fashioned wood fire look. For an ultra-modern look, go with a tempered glass bed. You’ve probably seen tempered glass fireplaces at restaurants—it looks like a bed of colorful glass shards is on fire. Tempered glass shards run as low as $4 per pound and come in a variety of colors. Ethanol-burning fireplaces are the latest trend in the industry and have been gaining popularity due to their easy installation and contemporary designs. Wall-mounted fireplaces have both of those features, as well as the benefit of being able to function both as a room heater and as a work of art! As the name implies, wall-mounted fireplaces can be hung on the wall anywhere in your home. Last, but not least, fireplace conversions are a great way to spruce up an older fireplace that burns wood or gas and replace it with a more modern ethanolburning unit. With conversions, you can purchase an ethanol-burning insert to keep the current aesthetic of your existing fireplace or update the look a bit with a more contemporary-looking surround. Installing an ethanol-burning insert may not generate as much heat as a gas- or wood-burning fireplace, but they are more environmentally friendly. Whether you’re remodeling an older fireplace or starting from scratch, there are numerous options to choose from. Talk through the pros and cons of each type with a fireplace expert who can help you pick the fireplace that’s best for you and your home! Breast Cancer Awareness Month A Time to Learn and Grow
By Leslie Byrne
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is a time for friends and families to support the people in their lives who are facing breast cancer. It’s a time to celebrate the fact that a breast cancer diagnosis today— though still frightening—is often not as dire as it used to be. Breast cancer deaths have been decreasing for decades. About 30 percent of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancer. It’s the second most common cause of death from cancer in women in the United States (after lung cancer). Though it is more common in women, men can also develop breast cancer. Why have Breast Cancer Awareness Month? The increased awareness of this disease every October has opened up a public conversation about breast cancer, which continues to drive research and improve survival rates. Advancements in detection and treatment have greatly increased survival rates. The average five-year survival rate with invasive breast cancer is 90 percent. When cancer is only in one breast, the five-year survival rate jumps to 99 percent. Early detection is the best line of defense against breast cancer. The top methods for early detection include physical examinations and imaging tests. Self-exams of the breasts are still recommended. Any lumps or changes should be checked out by a doctor. A breast exam should also be part of every woman’s annual physical. Mammography has been a mainstay of cancer diagnostics for many years. In traditional mammography, films from a low-dose
x-ray are reviewed for abnormalities. With digital mammography, the images are viewed on a computer or printed on a special film. Advantages of digital mammography include faster results, fewer exposures, and less discomfort for the patient. 3-D mammography helps doctors better distinguish masses or tissues that might be cancerous. Unlike traditional mammography, where the details of the breast are viewed in one flat image, 3-D mammography shows the breast in a series of layers, allowing the radiologist to more accurately interpret the images. 3-D mammography significantly reduces false positives and more accurately detects breast cancers early. Other imaging tests for breast cancer detection may include thermography, which senses the temperature changes caused by tumors, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Tissue sampling may also be required. Once breast cancer has been confirmed, women face several treatment options. Surgical options include lumpectomy (just the tumor is removed) and mastectomy (all of the breast tissue is removed). If can-

cer is found in the lymph nodes, they may also be removed. Most women with cancer in one breast will not develop cancer in the other breast, but some women are at an increased risk because of a genetic predisposition or strong family history. These women may opt to have both breasts removed if cancer is found in one of the breasts. Chemotherapy is often a part of breast cancer treatment, and research continues to improve its effectiveness. Hormone therapy slows down or stops the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors, and new options are being investigated. The healing process doesn’t end with the removal of the tumor—most women go on to have reconstructive surgery. For earlystage breast cancers, lumpectomy (also called breast-conserving surgery) may be an option. Though this saves healthy tissue, it can result in significant asymmetry. To address this, many doctors perform oncoplastic surgery. This procedure combines the cancer surgery with the reconstructive surgery into a single surgical event. Reconstruction generally consists of implant reconstruction and autologous or “flap” reconstruction. The flap technique uses tissue from another part of the patient’s body and may also include an implant. Implants are filled with saline or a silicone gel. While most women choose to have some type of reconstruction, others do not have additional reconstructive surgery. This decision is often called “going flat” or “living flat.” A 2014 study found that about 44 percent of women who had surgery to remove a tumor did not have reconstruction. After surgery, physical therapy is recommended. PT helps ameliorate pain, improves range of motion, and builds strength. It can also treat lymphedema (the swelling that can ensue after lymph nodes are removed or damaged). A support group can help patients and loved ones handle the stresses of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. It helps to talk about your concerns with someone who shares them and to ask questions of someone who has been through similar experiences. Support groups can be one-onone or small groups of people. More and more women are surviving and thriving after a breast cancer diagnosis. Participating in local Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities supports patients and survivors, whether or not you’re one of them. The more aware we are of the battle, the more ways we’ll find to help win it! Sources for this article included: breastcancer.org, ww5.komen.org, and cancer.org. WE

An Inside Look
Spezia Exquisite Dining in the Heart of Omaha By Angella A. Arndt
As you enter Spezia, tantalizing aromas stimulate your senses. You savor the scent of the great food that the chefs have prepared for the other lucky diners. Once you’re seated, you’re ready for your own culinary journey. The sensory experience is part of dining at Spezia, a locally owned restaurant that specializes in Italian cuisine, steaks, and seafood. Brian Reilly has been with Spezia for 15 years. Growing up on a farm, he learned how to work hard at an early age. Brian was a high school athlete, which fueled his competitive spirit and his desire to do his best. While working at a local restaurant during high school, he found that he had a knack in the kitchen. After graduation, he enrolled in the culinary program at Iowa Western Community College and started working on the salad line at Spezia. Over more than a decade, Brian has worked his way up to chef and part owner of the restaurant. Brian directs his competitive spirit toward making Spezia stand out in the wide field of restaurants in Omaha. After all, he points out, “if you’re not doing it better than the next guy, why do it?” The restaurant uses a wood-fired grill, which requires a fire to be built in the morning and sustained throughout the day to maintain a consistent temperature. Although this type of grill requires more effort, it gives the food a distinctive smoky flavor that can’t be achieved through other cooking methods. Spezia uses high-quality, locally sourced beef, which is branded as Omaha 1920 natural Angus and is comparable to certified Angus beef. The meat is aged for a minimum of 21 days, which tenderizes it and enhances its flavor. Each steak is cut by hand. Cooking the aged meat on a wood-fired grill imparts a rich, deep flavor with a touch of smokiness. Spezia is also known for its seafood. Scottish salmon and scallops are flown in fresh daily. The menu includes a wide array of salads, seafood entrees, innovative pastas, oven-roasted entrees, and mouth-watering desserts. They also have a great wine selection, with lots of Italian wines. The core menu has stayed the same since day one, but specials are rotated to take advantage of seasonal items. “We have consistency and quality,” Brian says. “People know that’s what they’ll get, and that’s what keeps them coming back.” Whether they want a simple meal or an elaborate meal, he shares, “customers can make Spezia what they want it to be.” Maintaining consistency and quality are the top priorities at Spezia, and the labor side of that equation is always challenging. The restaurant employs about 55 people. Brian feels fortunate to have a core staff of people who have been with him for several years, but

he’s always looking for topnotch line cooks and servers. “I want to find people who want to be part of something great,” he asserts, so he can expand his business. He knows he’s not alone in his quest to hire and retain great employees who take care in their work and strive to do their best. Being a chef and part owner at Spezia is not something he could do on his own, Brian notes. In addition to the cooperation and dedication he gets from his team at the restaurant, he also depends on the support he gets from his family. He’s always had a drive to work hard, he says, and service has always come naturally to him, but he simply couldn’t do it without his wife. “I’m always at the restaurant, working all the time,” he acknowledges. “We have two young children, and I miss a lot. She is my cornerstone. Without her support at home, I couldn’t do it.” Brian encourages all of us to try out more restaurants that are locally owned. “When you visit Spezia, you’re supporting a small business, not a national chain,” he says. “We’ve served a lot of great meals! We try to keep it special and do everything at the highest level.” That hard work really shows on a Saturday night when more than 330 people come to visit! At Spezia, they know how to keep you coming back for more. Spezia is located at 3125 South 72nd Street, in Omaha, with easy access off of Interstate 80. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for dinner; Saturdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; and Sundays, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information or to make a reservation, please call 402-391-2950 or find them online at speziarestaurant.com. Win, Win Encouraging Employee Engagement By George Morgan
The conventional wisdom is that when companies want to improve profitability, they begin by cutting back on wages. While this may have an element of truth, the only beneficiary of this outcome is the employer, and, in the long run, it may end up actually costing the employer. For over 30 years, the Gallup organization has studied an alternative to this approach. It has spent significant amounts of time, energy, and money studying the impact that engaged employees have on the profitability of a company. An “engaged employee” is enthusiastic about his or her job and so takes positive action to further the company’s reputation and interests. Over the years, Gallup has gathered significant data that documents the difference in profitability that engaged employees have as opposed to those who are either unengaged or actively disengaged. Engaged employees tend to be healthier than their non-engaged coworkers and thus reduce the amount of sick leave taken. Engaged employees stay with their companies longer and thus reduce the costs and effort needed to replace them. Furthermore, engaged employees create greater customer loyalty. Unengaged and actively disengaged employees are not only less productive than their engaged counterparts, but they also are more likely to steal from the company, negatively influence their coworkers, miss workdays, and drive otherwise loyal customers away. Gallup estimates that unengaged and actively disengaged employees cost the U.S. economy $500 billion annually.
50
October 2019
The historical data show that, for the past three decades, employee engagement has hovered around 22 percent of the U.S. labor force. Put another way, 78 percent of the American labor force is either unengaged or actively disengaged. Reducing this number could dramatically alter the profitability of individual companies and have a significant impact on our national GDP. There are many ways that companies can go about increasing the percentage of their labor force that is actively engaged in their work. A potential starting point for increasing employee engagement is to make sure that the company’s 401(k) is operating effectively. An efficient 401(k) is one that, from a cost and operation perspective, is working well. An effective 401(k) is one where the employees are excited about the program, give credit to the company for providing it to them, and, thus, become engaged. To begin transforming an ineffective 401(k) into an effective one,
www.womensedition.com
the company should examine the ease of participation and the way it conveys information about the program to the workforce. Next, a two-pronged educational program needs to be implemented. The first component of this education unit should be aimed at increasing employee participation. Nationally, only 71 percent of all eligible employees participate in their 401(k) program, and the majority of these are at the minimum level. Part of this educational effort needs to focus on the employer match portion of the program and inform employees on the cost of turning it down. Employers may say that the broker or the mutual fund that has the investment component of the 401(k) plan occasionally comes out and talks to employees about the program. While this may be true, a recent study by the Securities and Exchange Commission pointed out that there are a lot of resources in the community that can provide more in-depth and objective education. The 401(k) program requires that the individual participant must make his or her own investment decisions, but the majority of these participants have no experience or education in this area. As a result, many participants become overwhelmed, and they end up making decisions by default. Both employers and employees must understand that the investment side of the 401(k) program results in a situation where the process lends itself to a simple investment solution. The vast majority of 401(k) plans restrict the investment choices to mutual funds. The expenses associated with actively managed funds are paid by the owners, which reduces the investment return and, over the course of several decades, can end up costing participants tens of thousands of dollars. Alternatively, passive index funds have minimal expenses and have outperformed their expensive cousins in the long run. Educating and mentoring participants in the use of these funds has the potential to increase investment performance and reduce stress. When participants feel comfortable with and are, therefore, successful with the investment solution, plan participation increases in terms of both people and dollars. Bottom line: Where workers are engaged, everybody wins. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia Why the Difference Matters
By Linda Barnes
Dementia, as a catch-all term for a decline in mental function, includes memory loss, personality changes, or loss of reasoning ability. Alzheimer’s disease is the number-one cause of dementia. Less common are vascular dementia, alcohol-related dementia, and Parkinson’s disease dementia. Other medical conditions can also cause memory problems, though they are not technically dementia. A proper diagnosis is essential because treatments differ according to the underlying cause. No cure currently exists for Alzheimer’s disease, but medications can help with some of the symptoms. Forms of dementia such as those caused by drug interaction or vitamin deficiency may be temporary and reversible. With vascular-related dementia, blood vessels in the brain have been damaged, possibly by a stroke or by high blood pressure. Addressing the risk factors can help prevent further damage. For most of us, when we think of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, we think of memory loss. However, reduced ability to communicate, lack of focus, poor reasoning and judgment, and reduced visual perception are also symptoms of dementia. Early diagnosis is valuable in obtaining treatment and support, but it’s also difficult. This is partly because most people experience occasional symptoms of memory loss as they age—for example, the inability to remember a name or having to search for the right word when speaking. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementias.
52
October 2019
This is not a part of normal aging but, rather, a progressive disease that damages and destroys nerve cells in the brain. In the absence of a cure for this variety of dementia, treatments can slow progression of symptoms and enhance quality of life. Medical professionals such as physicians, neurologists, and geriatric specialists use a variety of tests to help render a diagnosis. A neurologist will look for signs of Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or other conditions that may be causing symptoms. Brain imaging like MRI or CT may be helpful. In addition, mental testing will evaluate the patient’s memory as well as problemsolving skills and other cognitive skills. Testing for Alzheimer’s disease is often a process of eliminating other possible causes. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment options are considered. Medication may help with symptoms, especially in early stages of disease. Lifestyle changes to improve diet and exercise level can help
www.womensedition.com
preserve cognitive function, as well. Anxiety may diminish once a diagnosis is made. Plans can be made if the dementia is progressive. The whole family can benefit from available support and other resources. Non-drug interventions may be explored, as well. Some people with dementia are able to remain at home with a family member providing care. Local support groups such as those affiliated with national organizations can provide care training, helpline assistance, and emotional support for both the person with dementia and the caregivers. The caregiver for a loved one with dementia may also need respite support. This can often be in the form of adult day care. Such a facility offers a break for the caregiver and opportunities for the person with dementia to enjoy social activities in a safe environment. It may also be a good choice for caregivers who work outside the home. Additional services, such as physical and occupational therapy, medical care, and assistance with personal care, may also be offered. Look for adult day care with staff specifically trained to care for people with dementia. Ask what measures are in place to ensure safety. Is transportation available? How are emergencies handled? What kinds of nutritional and recreational programs are offered? When loved ones are no longer able to be at home, residential care may be needed. Assisted living facilities provide meals, housing, and medical assistance for people who can’t live at home for any number of reasons. Help with personal care and medications, as well as social activities and fitness programs, are typically included. A wing or floor may be dedicated to dementia care, with specially trained staff. Skilled nursing facilities provide round-the-clock care. They are licensed and regulated by state and federal laws. Memory units within these facilities are increasingly available, with trained staff who are able to deal with dementia-related behavioral issues. When choosing a facility, visits are imperative. Talk with staff and residents. Determine cost, room availability, and whether Medicare or Medicaid is accepted. Is family involvement encouraged? What is the ratio of staff to residents? Ask about safety, transportation, dining facilities, and medically trained personnel. Don’t delay if you suspect dementia in a loved one. Early diagnosis and treatment are the key to maintaining a good quality of life for everyone. Sources for this article included: aarp.org, alz.org, alzheimers.net, and nia.nih.gov. WE

Child Educational Challenges Turn Frustration into Fluency
By Maria Harding
Striving for academic success can put a lot of pressure on students, teachers, and parents. More and more emphasis is placed on test scores and student grades as measures of educational standards, college readiness, and school accreditation. When a student falls behind in one or more subject areas, what can be done to help? Above all, it’s important that students know that their well-being is our highest priority. All young learners need a network of people they can trust. If they are made to feel ashamed for a lack of understanding, they may never again reach out for assistance. All students struggle at some point in their education, and we should make sure they know that they are not alone. We can recognize that a student is struggling through a variety of cues. Certainly, if children have the self-awareness to say that they do not understand a subject or a concept being presented in school, we should pay attention and express appreciation for their trust. Teachers’ assessments are also valuable. Though we know and love our own children better than anyone else does, it’s important to remember that teachers and administrators are experts who work with countless other children of the same age. Behavioral issues might be expressions of general frustration with learning. We can watch for changes in behavior that are aggressive or disruptive, but we should also keep an eye on tendencies to be sleepy, depressed, or anxious.

Once a problem has been identified in the classroom, it’s important to examine what the causes may be for the learning difficulty. Speak with your doctor or other healthcare specialists about possible medical impediments. Potential diagnoses may include vision or hearing impairment, dyslexia, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, or ADHD. Simple and preventable factors such as inadequate sleep or lack of nutrient-rich meals may also contribute to learning difficulties. Frequent absence from class can also create chaos for students when they miss crucial introductions to new material. For this reason, try to encourage good health and hygiene habits, and schedule outside appointments for days with no school. To begin to address a learning challenge, start by communicating with the classroom teacher; many teachers are willing to provide more one-on-one time before or after school.

Get in touch with counselors or school psychologists, who are wonderful resources for referring students to support programs that are specific to their needs. Students may also benefit from supplemental instruction from a private tutoring program. All students learn differently, and private instruction might offer a fresh approach that resonates better with your student. Computer gadgetry and the latest technology are not enough and should never be substitutes for a personal guide to learning, but a tutor should not be doing the work for a student, either. Some of the best programs have the student “teach” the material back to the instructor to ensure total comprehension. Another advantage of private tutoring is the greater availability of after-school hours. Tutors are often available to chat online or meet at your home or at another convenient location. Look for programs that offer scholarships or sliding-scale fees to ensure that all students have equal access. Private tutoring programs are also a fabulous way to help students prepare for standardized testing at every level. Even current college students who want to do well on the GRE, MCAT, or similar graduate school evaluative tests can benefit from specific instruction. The instructors in these programs are familiar with the most up-todate versions of the tests, which undergo periodic restructuring and revision. Students are taught how to prepare long-term, by focusing differently on strengths versus weaknesses, and they are given tips on how to be at their best on test day. Have fun exploring other resources that may promote serenity and build a student’s confidence in the classroom. Brain balancing can reduce anxiety and promote optimal conditions for learning. This holistic, drug-free approach to learning typically focuses on three areas of development: motor and sensory processing, academic conditioning, and nutrition. The motor-sensory activities promote good muscle tone, enhanced coordination, fine motor skills, and rhythm and timing. The academic exercises focus more on the varied styles of learning, to strengthen both the fundamentals and the more subtle abilities to infer and intuit. Though the pressures on today’s students are more varied and intense than ever, the options available to them for support and assistance are correspondingly diverse. Stop and Go and Stop Again Maintaining Your Vehicle’s Brakes
By Brennan Hallock
It’s no secret that your car’s brakes are one of its most important features—they’re what stands between “go” and “stop.” To make sure that your brakes are there when you need them, make sure they get the attention they need, from both you and your mechanic. How long your brakes last depends heavily on how you drive and where you drive, so there is no clear-cut rule for when elements of the braking system will need to be replaced. If you drive aggressively or in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, your brake pads will wear out faster than if most of your driving is on a highway. It’s important to have a mechanic look over your brakes regularly. Generally speaking, you should have your brakes inspected every six months (schedule this for the same time you take the car in to have the tires rotated). Your mechanic will check the thickness of the brake pads and the condition and wear of the calipers or drum hardware. The mechanic can alert you to any problems with your brakes or potential replacements that need to be made. Brakes also have built-in warning signals for when they need attention. When your brake pads wear down to a certain point, you will hear an annoying scraping sound every time you press the brake pedal. This sound comes from built-in wear sensors that scrape against the brake disc, alerting the
driver that the pads need to be replaced. Some newer cars also have electronic sensors that turn on a dashboard warning when the brake pads reach a minimum thickness. This feature is not standard on all cars, so it is best to rely on regular inspections to determine when to change your brake pads. Another indication of brake wear is that your brake pedal will, over time, get closer to the floor of the vehicle. This is a clear indicator that your brake pads need to be replaced, but the process is often so gradual that you don’t even notice it. If your brake pedal feels “spongy” when you press it, or if it goes to the floor suddenly, your brake fluid may be leaking. Your mechanic will need to repair leaks in the braking system right away. If you know how to top off the brake fluid (under the hood), you should do so before you head out to the mechanic. If you don’t know how, it’s safest to have the car towed and

have your mechanic show you how to top off the fluid, in case you ever need to do so again. Brake pads can last anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on factors such as your style of driving, where you are driving, the type of brake pad, and the environment in which you are driving. Brake rotors are the disks that the brake calipers clamp down on to stop your tires. They are typically made of cast iron or ceramic, and they should be replaced approximately every 70,000 miles. There are some things you can do to extend the life of your brakes as well as make your driving experience smoother and safer. First of all, don’t speed. Stopping quickly from a high rate of speed is one of the top causes of premature brake pad wear. Your brakes are turning energy into heat—the more energy they have to transform, the more wear is caused. As your driver’s ed teacher always said, do not “two foot” your pedals. Tapping on the brake pedal while you still have your foot on the gas won’t do anything to stop you and will
wear out your brake pads much sooner than necessary. To reduce wear on the brake pads, coast as much as possible. Pay attention to the drivers in front of you so that you can take your foot off the gas and coast to a stop instead of pressing hard on the brake. This is especially true in crowded stopand-go driving, which causes the most wear on your brakes. Also, don’t hurry up to stop. If you see a red light or stop sign coming up, there’s no point in pressing harder on the gas only to slow back down—simply coast to a stop. As an added bonus, this also saves gas. Keep your car as light as possible (the lighter the vehicle, the less work it takes to slow it down). Lastly, have your mechanic flush your brake fluid every two years to ensure that it is free of built-up water or contaminants. It feels like we’re all on the go all the time, but the truth is that we sometimes need to stop. With a little attention, your brakes will be ready to stop you when you need it most. Holiday Entertaining It’s Your Party—Enjoy It!
By Angella A. Arndt
Holidays are a time for gathering with family and friends, celebrating traditions, and reflecting upon our blessings. They’re also a time of holiday events and parties. Whether you’re the regular hosts or are hosting your first big holiday gathering, never fear! Entertaining can sound overwhelming, but there are ways to simplify the process and have some fun. Spice up your entertaining by throwing a theme party. If you’re into fundraising for charity, how about filling a sleigh for Toys for Tots? If you love costume parties, ask guests to dress up as their favorite holiday character. If you’d like a family-friendly theme, cookie decorating and gingerbread house decorating are good ways to get everyone in on the fun. Guests can bring materials needed for the activities, and you can award prizes. The possibilities are endless with a little imagination. Inexperienced hosts may spend the evening ensuring that everyone else is having a good time at the expense of their own enjoyment. Once the party is over, they may be exhausted, but the job is far from done—it’s now time to clean up and wash dishes. More seasoned hosts know how to outsource elements of hosting so they can experience the party instead of working it. Hiring a caterer is an excellent alternative to doing it all yourself. Caterers can provide complete party planning services that include everything from location selection to decorations to entertainment, or they can supply any portion of those services. Once you’ve determined the type of event you’ll be hosting, call a few caterers to run through some questions. First of all, what is the size of your event? Not all caterers are equipped to handle a large group. Check to see if the caterer has the required business licenses, health department permits, and liability insurance. Cost is an important consideration, but you can find a caterer to fit just about any budget. Think about the size of your event, the type of event (buffet vs. sit-down dinner), what you’d like to serve, and what you’d like to achieve. Does the caterer have enough staff, such as servers and bartenders, to handle your event? Keep in mind that more services generally mean more cost. Will your food be prepared off-site and delivered? If so, ask about preparation and delivery methods. Having food cooked off-site is more cost-effective than having a chef on location. (You may want to keep this in mind when selecting your menu.) Do they have signature dishes? Is the caterer able to handle special dietary requests such as gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, or nut-free? Do you know anyone who has used the caterer? If so, ask about their experience. Ask the caterer for references. Review the catering contract to ensure you understand included services, deadlines, and extra fees. Don’t forget to ask for a tasting to make sure the quality of food meets your expectations! Holidays are especially busy times

for caterers—you would be wise to book now or soon to ensure availability. For a large group, consider renting a venue for your event. Ideas might include hotels, golf courses, banquet rooms, and restaurant party rooms. Sites such as hotels and golf courses may require that you use their on-site catering services. If you’re renting a venue in which you are allowed to hire a caterer, confirm that the caterer is familiar with the location and understands its specific needs. Party rental companies carry a wide array of products to help simplify the party planning process. Everyone is familiar with items such as tables, chairs, linens, drink dispensers, dishes, and glassware. These companies are also likely to rent centerpieces, portable bars, audiovisual equipment, games, helium tanks, lighting, and more. Most places will deliver and pick up for an additional fee, so you don’t have to run around town. Party supply stores can be a great source of inspiration for ideas. They often have themed displays. You’ll find decorations, party favors, costumes, and balloons. Flowers are a great way to add elegance to any event. Your local florist can help you work within your budget to select floral arrangements that will complement your theme and create a specific mood. If you’re planning a formal event but dread the thought of writing out invitations, you can order personalized invitations and avoid the hassle of handwriting each one. Stationery stores carry the latest trends in greeting cards and invitations. You can even order personalized napkins to add an extra sparkle to your party. Entertaining should be just as fun for you as it is for your guests. With a little planning and a little help, you’ll be able to relax, enjoy the experience, and live in the moment. For a truly tropical location with all the comforts of home, an all-inclusive resort in Cancun is worth a look. Shimmering white sand, clear water, tropical climate, and affordability make this a popular destination. Explore Mayan civilization at one of the ruins, engage in water sports, swim with dolphins, or take an ATV tour. All-inclusive resorts provide wedding planning services that typically include the venue, accommodations, and food. Once you’ve chosen the location, check in with your local travel agent. Travel agents are invaluable members of the destination wedding planning team. They have industry connections and have probably traveled to your chosen destination… they may even have arranged a destination wedding there before! An agent will help you find the perfect hotel or resort for your wedding vision. They’ll assist you with group contracts and will know about specials and perks. Travel agents are familiar with travel requirements and documents. Your guests will appreciate working with an agent who is familiar with your plans and who can help them negotiate the travel process. A destination wedding is exciting, but it takes a little extra planning. Get started at least nine to 12 months in advance to ensure availability. It’s essential to establish a budget to avoid overspending. If possible, visit the location you’ve chosen to ensure it matches your vision and can accommodate your guests. Think about the climate when selecting attire and hairstyles for your wedding party. Send out save-the-date cards at least six months in advance so guests can plan their travel, and be sure to refer them to your travel agent. Mail formal invitations three months before the wedding. Arrive a few days early to review details with the wedding planner. Schedule a trial hair and makeup appointment so you know what to expect on your wedding day. Good travel agents can do a lot to simplify the destination wedding and honeymoon planning process. You’ll benefit from their expertise and guidance. Several resorts offer wedding planning services. Laughter for a Lifetime
The Upside of Oops Never Losing Your Perspective By Sharon Knierim
As humans, we all make mistakes. Some of us seem to make more mistakes than others. Then there are people who seem to be cast members right out of the Keystone Cops, tripping over their own tongues and making huge gaffes. Is there help for these poor souls? Well, yes, there certainly is a solution, but it does involve learning to navigate our social selves. Honesty is important, of course. Willing to admit a slip of the tongue or simply forgotten something or someone is necessary. Steering through our lives without hurting the feelings of others or minimizing their lives can be a challenge, but this is a worthwhile task. Do you ever wonder if your tongue is really working with your brain? Of course, in a perfect world, our brain works in league with our tongue and hopefully will protect us from too many verbal errors. This does not always happen. When we blurt out what we’re really thinking or feeling instead of using diplomacy, there is usually enough embarrassment to go around—for everyone. Although my own husband of many years is a wonderful man, he DOES NOT enjoy social gatherings and makes every attempt to avoid them. You know what kind of social gathering we’re talking about here. For a man of few words, a 30-minute visit is plenty. Sadly, he is married to a woman who hasn’t stopped talking since age 2. When we are planning to attend a shindig or soiree, I drill him on which questions not to ask, who should not be mentioned by name, and the evergrowing list of recent births, deaths, and divorces. No wonder he’s a nervous wreck by the time we arrive. Still, we do need to keep up socially, and so he endures. His “oopses” are not as frequent as they used to be. He has learned to become a listener rather than a talker, calculating that if he remains quiet, he will make fewer mistakes, thus offending fewer people. The upside of oops for him is that he is regarded as a very kind and caring person, willing to listen to everyone’s tales. These days, he is wellliked by everyone—except my mother, who views his quiet demeanor as being aloof. Well, you can’t please everyone! I myself have had plenty of “oops” moments. As age creeps up on me, it is more difficult to sort out who is who. Often, I have been guilty of calling someone by the wrong name. This is embarrassing both for me and for my misidentified victim. People do love to hear their own name, but sometimes it is easier just to talk to someone without using their name. I do not recommend calling people “honey,” “kiddo,” or “doll face.” This is actually worse than renaming someone in the middle of a conversation. To add to the frustration, I have a nasty habit of naming people what I think they should be called.
66
October 2019
This is really asking for all kinds of trouble, and I should break myself of this unkind and offensive habit. Someday I’ll get my comeuppance, blurting out “pie face” or “Barbie doll.” In fact, I will take this opportunity to predict my downfall. Social gatherings offer the best opportunity for performing an oops. The challenge begins with issuing invitations. Who to invite? Who not to invite? This first hurdle can be painful. If you design a huge guest list and pare it down, there will be trouble. Someone will have his or her feelings hurt. If you plan to invite just a few intimate friends, you’re bound to discover someone was counting on your thoughtfulness by including them. There are often no winners here. You’ll have to do the best you can. Of course, you can always lie when the uninvited ask why they haven’t received their invitations. You can try this method if you like, but it won’t make you or your not-invited guest very happy. Tell the truth and invite this person to your next event. Most of the time, an oops like this does not have an upside, but you may be forgiven if you throw this person a surprise birthday party. Call it a mistake in judgment, a slip of the tongue, too much honesty, thoughtlessness, or simply a lapse of memory, if you like. We all create an oops once in a while. Be brave. Keep charging forward. There is an upside to many an oops, and most of us are quickly forgiven. Besides, it makes us more loveable. It’s all a matter of perspective. WE

The Green Thumb
Jumping Into Fall A Sure Cure for End-of-Summer Blahs! By Sharon Knierim
Sometimes, we find ourselves feeling sad toward the end of summer. Soon to be gone are the exciting colors and hues of summertime blossoms and the wild and wonderful constant growth of those glorious summer months. For gardeners and gardening enthusiasts, summer is the heyday of nature’s wonders. Don’t be downhearted. A sure cure for those end-of-growingseason blues is the opportunity to enjoy the more subtle shades of autumn (not to mention the refreshingly cooler weather). Nature’s color palette is different during the fall months, true, but maybe that is a good thing. After all that riotous color, we need to relax and tone down the color scheme in our gardens. Of course, if you’re someone who particularly enjoys more subtle color, this is definitely your time of year. Now are the weeks to enjoy tones of reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. While it is impossible to pass through a summer without the rampage of color, so too is it unthinkable to not enjoy the subtle palette of nature’s more calming shades. If a garden has been planted with all seasons in mind, and trees and shrubs have been placed for maximum time to “show off,” September, October, and even November can be absolutely beautiful and very satisfying. Pumpkins planted in the vegetable garden or in the compost are now impressive in their different shades of orange. Whether
harvested and displayed or left in the field, these orange-brown delights add plenty of interest to any landscape. Remember, pumpkins are relatively easy to grow and maintain. A special bonus in growing pumpkins is the vine’s ability to cover up some not-so-attractive areas in the garden. During the summer, pumpkin vines and their blossoms grow beautifully and lustily. As autumn visits us, the vines begin to wither, leaving the big orange spheres that we all enjoy. Trees can be real showstoppers when autumn arrives. We all notice that some species give us a hint of what’s going to happen. Beautiful autumn show trees have leaves that range from brilliant red and fabulous yellow to tawny shades of brown and copper. In some areas of the country, these trees provide the reason for flocks of tourists who enjoy this display covering the landscape. You can have the same beauty in your own garden by planning and planting the correct tree or trees for exceptional autumn beauty. Consult a garden expert to be sure you select the right tree

to grow and enjoy. A fellow gardener and I have had a long-standing debate regarding the Autumn Blaze Maple. This species is the most beautiful autumn show tree, but—being a maple tree, it has its drawbacks, including shallow roots and weak limbs that are susceptible to storm damage. Needless to say, the debate continues. Is it worth it to plant a stunning tree that might become problematic? That decision has to be made by each individual, but observing the beauty of those scarlet leaves during autumn is my argument. It is absolutely breathtaking! Autumn is the perfect time to plant a tree in the Midwest. A favorite plant for many fall gardeners is the chrysanthemum. We have discussed the mum here before. This plant is hardy, sturdy, and truly reliable. Many of them can withstand drought and the searing heat of summer. Not much maintenance is required, with the exception of watering and the separation of plants every few years. By separating mums and replanting clumps here and there, the number of mums can be increased significantly. The color palette for mums is unbelievable, including white, yellow, pink, gold, and purple. Be sure to keep them trimmed back until at least the Fourth of July to avoid premature bloom, and just wait for their display of pleasing colors. Mums are usually the last bloomers in the garden. Along with asters, they will provide welcome color until at least the first hard freeze. Covering them at night with a light blanket when frost or freeze warnings are issued will sustain them and keep them blooming longer. For the most part, many gardens, yards, and landscapes naturally decorate themselves for their fall showing. Mother Nature has a way of revealing her beauty without too much human manipulation. However, because we are human, we enjoy enhancing what is already available and we are full of curiosity. It is instinctive, then, that we love to plant and experiment in league with nature. Today, gardening remains a wildly popular pastime, and it’s no wonder why. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE October 2019

Meet Your Match Choose a Pet That Fits Your Lifestyle By Brie Christensen
Many people love animals and would like to have one as part of their lives. Pets are universally popular! However, some pets will fit better into your life than others. When you’re choosing a pet to enhance your life, you need to consider many factors, like your family situation, your lifestyle, allergies, and more. As a potential pet owner, the first thing to consider is how much time you have to dedicate to caring for a pet. Dogs, for example, need frequent exercise and access to the outdoors. Cats, on the other hand, can generally be left alone indoors all day. Fish and other animals that live in an aquarium require daily feeding but very little attention otherwise. If you work long hours or travel extensively, consider how much time you have to dedicate to caring for your pet on a daily basis. Of course, there are ways to work around this: Some pet owners choose to enroll their pets in daycare or hire a professional pet sitter to take over when they are unable to be there. It’s important to consider your own age and health situation when selecting an animal. Pets have varied life spans, and you want to be confident that you’ll be physically able to care for your pet throughout its lifetime. You should also take a look at your finances to ensure you have the financial stability to care for an animal for the remainder of its life. Consider expenses for food, exercise, toys, socialization, grooming, training, and health care. Different types of pets have different types of costs. For example, it can be expensive to set up an elaborate aquarium, but costs won’t go up over time. With mammals, health care costs tend to increase with age. Some breeds of dogs and cats are known for having particular health problems. Check with a veterinarian to learn more about anticipated costs and to decide whether health insurance for your pet is something you want to consider. Some pets, such as reptiles or birds, require special vet care that might not be offered at all offices. The time and financial commitments to pets aren’t the only parts to this equation—you also have to consider where and how you live. Do you have a small apartment or a large yard? Are you looking for a lap warmer to cuddle with or an energetic running buddy? Does anyone in your household have allergies to pet dander? (Keep in mind that allergies don’t necessarily mean you can’t become the pet owner you want to be. Some furry pets are hypoallergenic, like Cornish Rex cats or Yorkshire terriers.) If your household includes children, it’s a good idea to select a pet that will work well with youngsters. While some breeds of dog and cat are known to be generally kid-friendly, it’s important to remember that every animal, like every human, has its own personality and background experiences. a pet that hasn’t met each member of the household. That said, pets can be great for kids. Teach your children how to be safe around your pet and how to maintain proper hygiene. (This will also help them know what to do and how to act when they encounter other people’s pets.) Learning how to properly care for another living being helps kids develop a sense of responsibility and compassion. When it comes to feeding, exercising, and cleaning up after pets, kids can definitely share the load! If you’re thinking of getting a pet, you may already know about the many health benefits of owning an animal. Pets can be a real asset for mental health, providing companionship, decreasing feelings of loneliness and stress, and mitigating the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Pets may also provide their owners with opportunities for socialization and friendship, which also helps to combat loneliness. Some pets (dogs, in particular) provide an opportunity for increased exercise and time for outdoor activities. When you exercise regularly with your pet, you both get the benefits of the exercise! This can help pet owners with health issues like excess weight, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. There are, undoubtedly, may benefits to adopting a pet. Before taking the plunge into pet ownership, it’s important to determine what type of animal will fit best within your family’s lifestyle, both physically and financially. Once a perfect pet match is made, there’s no stopping the fun and companionship that is sure to transpire down the road. Sources for this article included: avma.org, cdc.gov, and hillspet.com. WE

Positive Perspective
Life is Great I’m Back Home
By Janet Van deWalle
“I’ve got nothing to do today but smile.” —Simon and Garfunkel Are you happy? Do you wake up with a smile on your face each morning? Do you wake up feeling light, airy, and energetic…or do you drag yourself out of bed to face another day? I admit, I’ve experienced both ends of that spectrum throughout my life. Right now, I’m pretty darned happy. Do I have a lot on my plate each day? Of course I do—we all do—but, every day, I find myself grinning with the anticipation of how much fun I get to have that day. “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” —Mahatma Gandhi For the first time in a long time, I am back doing what I love. I am at Women’s Edition full time. I am meeting with small businesses to help them reach you, our readers. It is SO gratifying! I wake up each day raring to go. I go to sleep tired, but it’s a good tired, because I know that I have made a difference in people’s lives. Small businesses need all the help that they can get, even more so now than when Women’s Edition started 33 years ago. I started Women’s Edition way “back in the day,” when I was 30 years old. This issue, October of 2019, is our 400th issue. Wow.

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” —Albert Schweitzer I feel as if my life has come full circle. I am doing what I love again. I can totally relate to the small business owners I’m meeting with. It takes a lot of courage to start your own business. “Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.” —Brian Tracy The other day, I had the pleasure of meeting one of our new advertisers. This gentleman is on his third career. He looked happy. There was a twinkle in his eye that you couldn’t miss. Erin, my Art and Editorial Director, made it a point to introduce him to me when he stopped by our office. Thank you, Erin! That brief meeting reminded me that we all still have it in us. I would encourage any of you who have thought about “doing your own thing” to take the plunge. It truly doesn’t get any better than this! “If you want to be happy, be.” —Leo Tolstoy
